A new perspective was put forward to alleviate the potential toxicity of herbicide (R)-imazethapyr ((R)-IM) to non-target plant wheat by active regulation between auxin and secondary metabolite 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazine-3(4H)-one (DIMBOA) in this study. (R)-IM effortlessly disrupted the balance between wheat growth and defense, which not only reduced 32.4% auxin content in wheat leaves, but also induced 40.7% DIMBOA accumulation compared to the control group. Transcriptomic results indicate that restoration of the auxin level in plants promotes the up-regulation of growth-related genes and increased accumulation of DIMBOA increases the expression of defense-related genes. Auxin and DIMBOA are in two divergent paths and alleviate herbicide stress on wheat primarily through effects on growth and defense, respectively. Additionally, as a common precursor of both auxin and DIMBOA, indole adopted a combined growth and defense strategy in response to (R)-IM toxicity, i.e., both restoring growth development and enhancing the defense system. It might be possible to find appropriate ways to regulate the plant growth-defense balance under herbicide stress by regulating auxin and DIMBOA levels in plants. Our insight into the interference mechanism of herbicides to the plant growth-defense system will facilitate the design of improved strategies for herbicide detoxification.

Nowadays, numerous studies have focused on the newly developed technologies for the thorough removal of tetracyclines (TCs). The efficient removal of trace-amount pollutants requires the development of improved materials with higher adsorption capacity and increased adsorption selectivity. Zn(II)-mediated chitosan nonwoven fabric (Zn-CSNW) adsorbent with coordination capability was explored for the effective and selective removal of TC. The adsorption of TC to Zn-CSNW could reach equilibrium in about 30 min with a maximum adsorption capacity of 195.9 mg/g. It exhibited high anti-interference performance for TC adsorption at low concentrations, with good regeneration and effective reuse. Except for citrate, organic materials similar in structure to TC or common ions in aqueous solutions did not show obvious competition for the adsorption of low concentrations of TC. Additionally, the inherent fluorescence of chitosan and the fluorescence sensitization effect of Zn2+ for TC enabled function of Zn-CSNW as an indicator of the adsorption of TC by changes in fluorescence color and intensity under UV light (365 nm). It can indicate the saturation state of the Zn-CSNW, which will bring convenience to the use of the adsorbent. The Zn(II)-mediated coordination interaction plays a vital role in both the selective recognition of TC and the fluorescence sensing of adsorption amount, demonstrating an affordable and effective strategy for the treatment of water containing low amounts of antibiotics.

Environmental risks posed by discharge of the emerging contaminant antimony (Sb) into water bodies have raised global concerns recently. The toxicity of Sb has been shown to be species-dependent, with Sb(III) demonstrating much greater toxicity than Sb(V). Here, we proposed an electrochemical filtration system to achieve rapid detoxification of Sb(III) via a non-radical pathway. The key to this technology was an electroactive carbon nanotube filter functionalized with nanoscale Ti-Ce binary oxide. Under an electric field, in situ generated H2O2 could react with the Ti-Ce binary oxide to produce hydroperoxide complexes, which enabled an efficient transformation of Sb(III) to the less toxic Sb(V) (τ 90% was achieved using lake water spiked with Sb(III) at 500 μg/L. The results showed that Ti/Ce-hydroperoxo surface complexes were the dominant species responsible for the non-radical oxidation of Sb(III) based on extensive experimental evidences and advanced characterizations. This study provides a robust and effective strategy for the detoxification of water containing Sb(III) and other similar heavy metal ions by integrating state-of-the-art advanced oxidation processes, electrochemistry and nano-filtration technology.

Disposable wipes and masks have come to be considered as underestimated sources of microfiber generation since the emergence of COVID-19. However, research into the creation of microfibers due to wiping with these non-woven products is scarce, and the potential effects of fabric properties on shedding behavior are unclear. This study investigated microfiber release from 7 wet wipes, 5 dry wipes, and 4 masks in response to the use of simulated daily wiping conditions on artificial skin. The dry wipes (77-568 p per sheet) shed more microfibers than the wet ones (21-190 p per sheet) after 2, 10, or 50 wiping cycles under a 9.8 N wiping force. In addition, an average of 56 microfibers could be released from per gram of wipe, and each square centimeter of wipe could release about 1.18 microfibers during wiping. Masks shed fewer microfibers than wipes due to the excellent shedding resistance of spunbond nonwoven fabrics and the strengthened mechanical properties granted by bonding points. Cellulose, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polypropylene (PP) were the major polymers in the microfibers shed by wipes, and the microfibers from masks were all PP. The limited regeneration of Fe

Compared to large companies, the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in China are more likely to fail in developing green supply chain management (GSCM). Capturing its failure factors could be useful for managers and policymakers to decide how green supply chains can be successfully designed and developed. Meanwhile, these factors can include complex interrelationships. Properly dealing with them can help identify the critical factors which can assist decision-makers to efficiently manage green supply chains. This study thus proposes a comprehensive framework to explore and understand failure factors of GSCM in China’s SMEs to improve the opportunities of GSCM in China. The fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE) and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) are combined and applied to identify critical failure factors through translating interrelationships in a hierarchical cause–effect model. The results indicate that collaboration and support are the most critical perspectives for GSCM, and these two perspectives also interrelated with each other and affect the perspectives of knowledge, technology and economy to varying degrees. Moreover, the critical failure factors include lack of top management support, poor guidance from authorities, difficulty in supplier selection and inadequate supplier commitment. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to check the robustness. Conceptual and managerial implications are discussed.

The metals used in textile wet processing are of significant concern for the environment and human health. However, our understanding of metals released by the Chinese textile industry and their potential risks to ecology is limited. This work quantified the concentrations of seven metals in 199 wastewater samples from 77 textile enterprises in the southeastern coastal area of China. In the water discharged after end-of-pipe treatment, the mean concentrations of Sb, Hg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, and As were 0.289, 0.009, 0.579, 0.277, 0.035, 0.016, and 0.013 mg/L, respectively. Alkali deweighting effluents, dyeing effluents, and influents into regulation tanks were observed to be “hotspots” for metal distributions. Among the seven target metals, only Sb was found to be significantly correlated with COD, NH3-N, TN, and TP. The results of one-way ANOVA suggested that the Sb mainly came from the processing of polyester fibers. Overall, the majority of discharged wastewater samples were at safe levels, according to six health indicators. Sb posed elevated risks in comparison to other elements, which necessitated further concern. The findings can help decision-makers prevent hazardous metal contamination in the textile and dyeing industry, and provide a basis for the further study of the mechanisms of metal migration in the environment.

Herein, a silicate-enhanced flow-through electro-Fenton system with a nanoconfined catalyst was rationally designed and demonstrated for the highly efficient, rapid, and selective degradation of antibiotic tetracycline. The key active component of this system is the Fe2O3 nanoparticle filled carbon nanotube (Fe2O3-in-CNT) filter. Under an electric field, this composite filter enabled in situ H2O2 generation, which was converted to reactive oxygen species accompanied by the redox cycling of Fe3+/Fe2+. The presence of the silicate electrolyte significantly boosted the H2O2 yield by preventing the O-O bond dissociation of the adsorbed OOH*. Compared with the surface coated Fe2O3 on the CNT (Fe2O3-out-CNT) filter, the Fe2O3-in-CNT filter demonstrated 1.65 times higher kL value toward the degradation of the antibiotic tetracycline. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching tests synergistically verified that the dominant radical species was the 1O2 or HO· in the confined Fe2O3-in-CNT or unconfined Fe2O3-out-CNT system, respectively. The flow-through configuration offered improved tetracycline degradation kinetics, which was 5.1 times higher (at flow rate of 1.5 mL min-1) than that of a conventional batch reactor. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry measurements and theoretical calculations suggested reduced toxicity of fragments of tetracycline formed. This study provides a novel strategy by integrating state-of-the-art material science, Fenton chemistry, and microfiltration technology for environmental remediation.

Global climate change, growing population, and environmental pollution underscore the need for a greater focus on providing advanced water treatment technologies. Although electrochemical based-processes are becoming promising solutions, they still face challenges owing to mass transport and upscaling which hinder the exploitation of this technology. Electrode design and reactor configuration are key factors for achieving operational improvements. The electroactive membrane has proven to be a breakthrough technology integrating electrochemistry and membrane separation with an enhanced mass transport by convection. In this review article, we discuss recent progress in environmental applications of electroactive membranes with particular focus on those composed of carbon nanotubes (CNT) due to their intriguing physicochemical properties. Their applications in degradation of refractory contaminants, detoxification and sequestration of toxic heavy metal ions, and membrane fouling alleviations are systematically reviewed. We then discuss the existing limitations and opportunities for future research. The development of advanced electroactive systems depends on interdisciplinary collaborations in the areas of materials, electrochemistry, membrane development, and environmental sciences.

Given the recent extensive synthesis and application of ionic liquids (ILs), finding a sensitive and visual indicator to provide a fast-initial risk assessment of IL use has become a pressing issue. In this study, we verified that the phototaxis of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a valid indicator of the environmental risk associated with chiral ILs L-(+)- and D-(-)-1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium lactate (BMIM L). Briefly, C. reinhardtii was exposed to a 4000-lx side light source for varying lengths of time. Following the allotted exposure time, the algae aggregation was photographed, and then quantitative analysis was conducted using Image-J software to obtain the corresponding relationship between IL stimulation and C. reinhardtii phototaxis. The gray areas from each treatment were measured and the percentage was calculated. After 16 h of side lighting, for control, the percentage of gray areas was - 22%, while for L-(+)- and D-(-)- BMIM L were 17% and 33%, respectively. Then, after 8 h of darkness, where D-(-)-BMIM L and the control showed the positive phototaxis, but the L-(+)-BMIM L-treated group showed virtually no change. This phenomenon is consistent with excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, atomic force microscope (AFM) results indicated distinct aggregation between D-(-)- and L-(+)-BMIM L, which caused changes in cell permeability that induced a change in ROS transfer. Furthermore, relationship between phototaxis and changes in cell ultrastructure and photosynthetic efficiency was also investigated. This work demonstrates the potential of phototaxis to serve as a sensitive, convenient, and cost effective qualitative assessment of ILs' toxic impact, with the understanding that quantitative evaluation requires further improvement.

Microplastics (MPs) contamination in rivers and lakes is of paramount environmental importance as freshwater systems transport MPs from land to ocean. However, information regarding the spatio-vertical distributions of MPs in rivers, and their associations with surrounding industrial activities, is scarce and unclear. This study investigated MPs in the Taipu River, where there is a highly developed textile industry in Yangtze River Delta, China. Results showed a widespread occurrence of MPs particles with concentrations in the range of 0.65-6.07 items/L and 0.30-3.63 items/L in surface and bottom waters. A higher abundance of MPs was observed in surface waters than in bottom waters (t = 5.423, p = 0.024). The MPs distributions varied markedly in space, with the highest abundances being found in textile manufacturing zones as a consequence of industrial release (F = 14.642, p 0.001). Transparent fibers were the major MPs compositions with 100-500 μm in size. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) accounted for 71.4% and 59.73% of the total MPs identified in surface and bottom water, respectively. These PET polymers were predominantly presented in "fibrous" shapes, further reflecting the point sources of textile wastewater. Moreover, polyvinyl acetate (PVAC), used as fabric coating and resin matrix to form nonwoven fabrics, was firstly highlighted at a watershed scale. Although risk assessments revealed a light to moderate risks of MPs in the Taipu River, textile wastewater appears to cause a high "grey water" footprint and increase the risks of MPs pollution from textile life-cycle production. This study bridged gaps between field data and policy-making for MPs control and shed insight into the cleaner production of the textile industry.

The introduction of defects into hierarchical porous metal-organic frameworks (HP-MOFs) is of vital significance to boost their adsorption performance. Herein, an advanced template-assisted strategy has been developed to fine-tune the phosphate adsorption performance of HP-MOFs by dictating the type and number of defects in HP-UiO-66(Zr). To achieve this, monocarboxylic acids of varying chain lengths have been employed as template molecules to fabricate an array of defect-rich HP-UiO-66(Zr) derivatives following removal of the template. The as-prepared HP-UiO-66(Zr) exhibits a higher sorption capacity and faster sorption rate compared to the pristine UiO-66(Zr). Particularly, the octanoic acid-modulated UiO-66(Zr) exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 186.6 mg P/g and an intraparticle diffusion rate of 6.19 mg/g·min, which are 4.8 times and 1.9 times higher than those of pristine UiO-66(Zr), respectively. The results reveal that defect sites play a critical role in boosting the phosphate uptake performance, which is further confirmed by various advanced characterizations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the important role of defects in not only providing additional sorption sites but also reducing the sorption energy between HP-UiO-66(Zr) and phosphate. In addition, the hierarchical pores in HP-UiO-66(Zr) can accelerate the phosphate diffusion toward the active sorption sites. This work presents a promising route to tailor the adsorption performance of MOF-based adsorbents via defect engineering.

In this study, we have developed a continuous-flow electrochemical system towards the rapid and selective conversion of ammonia to N2, based on a tubular substoichiometric titanium dioxide (Ti4O7) anode and a Pd–Cu co-modified Ni foam (Pd–Cu/NF) cathode, both of which are indispensable. Under the action of a suitable anode potential, the Ti4O7 anode enables the conversion of Cl− to chloride radicals (Cl˙), which could selectively react with ammonia to produce N2. The anodic byproducts, e.g. NO3−, were further reduced to N2 at the Pd–Cu/NF cathode. EPR and scavenger experiments confirmed the dominant role of Cl˙ in ammonia conversion. Complete transformation of 30 mg L−1 ammonia could be obtained over 40 min of continuous operation under optimal conditions. The proposed electrochemical system also exhibits enhanced oxidation kinetics compared to conventional batch systems. This study provides new insights into the rational design of a high-performance electrochemical system to address the challenging issue of ammonia pollution.

High chemical oxygen demand (COD) and a strong color, which primarily originates from desizing and dyeing operations, are two major removal objectives in textile wastewater treatment. In this study, crosslinking-induced precipitation via the covalent bonding between –OH groups of PVA and vinyl sulfone groups of reactive dyes is proposed to simultaneously remove poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and reactive dyes. Due to the nucleophilic addition reaction under an alkaline condition, PVA polymers can be efficiently crosslinked by dye molecules and destabilized in the presence of alkali and Na2SO4. Additionally, due to the high coagulation efficiency under the alkaline conditions, MgSO4 was used as a coagulant to facilitate the removal of the residual color after precipitation. After a two-step process, whereby coagulation was followed by crosslinking-induced precipitation, the maximum efficiencies of the removal of COD, PVA, and color attained 88.9%, 86.3%, and 99.2%, respectively, when the PVA monomer/RB5 mole ratio was 400. We hope that this technically feasible, highly efficient, and cost-effective process provides a basis for the practical application of the simultaneous treatment of desizing and dyeing wastewater.

Water contamination from ammonia has recently became a global concern. Herein, a chloride-radical-mediated electrochemical filtration system has been developed towards effective and rapid conversion of ammonia to nitrogen (N2). This continuous-flow system consists of a nanoscale tin oxide modified carbon nanotube (SnO2-CNT) anode and a Pd−Cu co-modified Ni foam (Pd−Cu/NF) cathode. The SnO2-CNT anode enables the Cl− oxidation to a chloride radical (Cl ) at a proper anode potential (e.g., 2.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl) without severe self-oxidation. The macro-porous Pd−Cu/NF cathode further reduces anodic by-products (e.g., NO3− and NO2−) to N2. EPR and scavenging tests indicate that Cl was the dominant radical specie responsible for ammonia conversion. Anode potentials, chloride concentration, flow rate and solution pH were identified as key parameters affecting the overall conversion performance. The proposed continuous-flow system showed enhanced conversion kinetics as compared to the conventional batch reactor due to the convectively enhanced mass transport. This study provides new insight for the rational design of advanced continuous-flow systems towards ammonia decontamination from water bodies.

One of the topics gaining lots of recent attention is the antimony (Sb) pollution. We have designed a dual-functional electroactive filter consisting of one-dimensional (1-D) titanate nanowires and carbon nanotubes for simultaneous oxidation and sorption of Sb(III). Applying an external limited DC voltage assist the in-situ conversion of highly toxic Sb(III) to less toxic Sb(V). The Sb(III) removal kinetics and efficiency were enhanced with flow rate and applied voltage (e.g., the Sb(III) removal efficiency increased from 87.5% at 0 V to 96.2% at 2 V). This enhancement in kinetics and efficiency are originated from the flow-through design, more exposed sorption sites, electrochemical reactivity, and limited pore size on the filter. The titanate-CNT hybrid filters perform effectively across a wide pH range of 3–11. Only negligible inhibition was observed in the presence of nitrate, chloride, and carbonate at varying concentrations. Our analyses using STEM, XPS, or AFS demonstrate that Sb were mainly adsorbed by Ti. DFT calculations suggest that the Sb(III) oxidation kinetics can be accelerated by the applied electric field. Exhausted titanate-CNT filters can be effectively regenerated by using NaOH solution. Moreover, the Sb(III)-spiked tap water generated ∼2400 bed volumes with a >90% removal efficiency. This study provides new insights for rational design of continuous-flow filters for the decontamination of Sb and other similar heavy metal ions.

Microplastics in urban rivers provide bacterial niches and serve as dispersal vectors for antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) dissemination, which may exacerbate risks in the aquatic systems. However, whether MPs in the river would also selectively enrich ARGs and the underlying mechanisms shaping the resistome on MPs remains largely unknown. In this study, we explored the occurrence of ARGs, bacterial communities, and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) on MPs and in waters from the Huangpu River in China. Microplastics were widely distributed in the river (1.78 ± 0.84 items/L), with overwhelming percentages of polyethylene terephthalate fibers. Although reduced ARG abundances were observed on MPs than in waters, MPs selectively enriched the ARGs resistant to Rifamycin and Vancomycin. A clear variation for ARG profiles was elucidated between water and MPs samples. Network analysis suggested that MPs created a unique niche for the genus Afipia to colonize, potentially contributing to the vertical dissemination of ARGs. Additionally, the co-occurrence between ARGs and MGEs revealed that the MPs favor the propagation of some plasmid-associated ARGs mediated by horizontal gene transfer. The null model-based stochasticity ratio and the neutral community model suggested that the ARG assembly on MPs was dominantly driven by stochastic process. The results further indicated that microbial communities and MGEs played significant roles in shaping ARG profiles and dynamics on MPs. Our findings provided new insights into the ecological processes of antibiotic resistome of the aquatic plastisphere.

The color removal efficiencies by coagulation of two groups of laboratory-prepared dye solutions were compared; one group comprised dyes with the same chromophores and auxochromes, and the other group consisted of dyes with different chromophores and the same or different auxochromes. Several coagulants, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), anionic polyacrylamide (APAM), aluminum sulfate (alum as Al2(SO4)3), ferric chloride (FeCl3), aluminum chloride (AlCl3), and magnesium chloride (MgCl2), were selected to cover a large range of experimental variations in order to obtain sufficient data to predict and model the color removal efficiency. The effect of coagulant dosage on the color removal efficiency was determined, and the dye removal mechanism by coagulation was further investigated using the best performing coagulants for each dye group (disperse, acid, reactive, and basic). It was shown that the best dye–coagulant combinations that achieved superior color removal efficiency for each dye group with the same structures and functional groups were disperse dye–MgCl2 at a pH of 12, acid dye–MgCl2 at a pH of 12, reactive dye–PAC at a pH of 7.5, and basic dye–APAM at a pH of 8.3, in descending order. When treated with the same coagulant, dyes with the same auxochromes and charge exhibited very similar color removal efficiency. The state of the dye molecules in water was shown to have a significant influence on the coagulation effect. The Fenton reaction has the advantages of short reaction time, low cost, no toxicity, and straightforward application and control. The Fenton reaction generates highly reactive HO•, which has been applied effectively. However, the effect of the generated Fe3+ has not been investigated widely. In this study, the Fenton reaction was used to improve the Cr(VI) adsorption and detoxification capacities of chitosan. After the Fenton modification, chitosan efficiently adsorbed Cr(VI) and transformed it into the less toxic Cr(III) in a wide pH range as a result of layer formation, which was described by a sandwich model. The adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the Fenton modified chitosan was in good agreement with the Freundlich adsorption model, and the adsorption capacity exceeded 120 mg/g. During the Fenton reaction, H2 O2 and HO• with high oxidative activity broke the hydrogen bonds in the chitosan structure, resulting in the release of free amine groups for Fe3+ to form metal-binding biopolymers. The distance between the chitosan polymers increased, and additional adsorption sites were created. HCrO4- entered the gap between the chitosan polymer and was adsorbed on the newly created adsorption sites. The sandwich adsorption model indicated that the Fenton modified chitosan provided a high concentration of active sites for Cr(VI) capture and detoxification. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Fenton reaction was used to improve the adsorption ability of chitosan. The formed Fe3+ in Fenton reaction was utilized. HO· broke the hydrogen bonds and Fe3+ ions chelated with chitosan in modification. Cr(VI) could be adsorbed and reduced efficiently by Fenton modified chitosan. The Fenton modified chitosan provided a high concentration of active sites for Cr(VI) capture and detoxification.

The ability to convert excess ammonia in water into harmless N2 is highly desirable for environmental remediation. We present a chlorine-oxygen radical (ClO)-mediated photoelectrochemical filtration system for highly efficient and complete ammonia removal from water. The customized photochemical device comprised a Ag-functionalized TiO2nanotube array mesh photoanode and a Pd-Cu co-modified nickel foam (Pd-Cu/NF) cathode. Under illumination, holes generated at the anode catalyzed the conversion of H2O and Cl- to HOand Cl, respectively. In turn, these radicals then reacted further, yielding ClO, which selectively decomposed ammonia. The cathode enabled further reduction of anodic byproducts such as NO3- to N2. The complete oxidation of all dissolved ammonia was achieved within 15 min reaction under neutral conditions, where N2 was the dominant product. The impact of key parameters was assessed, which enabled the discovery of optimal reaction conditions and the proposal of the underlying working mechanism. The flow-through configuration demonstrated a 5-fold increase of ammonia oxidation rate compared to the conventional batch reactor. The role of ClO in the oxidation of ammonia was verified with electron paramagnetic resonance and scavenger studies. This study provided greater mechanistic insights into photoelectrochemical filtration technology and demonstrated the potential of future nanotechnology for removing ammonia.

Herein, we rationally designed a dual-functional electroactive filter system for simultaneous detoxification and sequestration of Sb(III). Binder-free and nanoscale TiO2-modified carbon nanotube (CNT) filters were fabricated. Upon application of an external electrical field, in situ transformation of Sb(III) to less toxic Sb(V) can be achieved, which is further sequestered by TiO2. Sb(III) removal kinetics and capacity increase with applied voltage and flow rate. This can be explained by the synergistic effects of the filter's flow-through design, electrochemical reactivity, small pore size, and increased number of exposed sorption sites. STEM characterization confirms that Sb were mainly sequestered by TiO2. XPS, AFS, and XAFS results verify that the Sb(III) conversion process was accelerated by the electrical field. The proposed electroactive filter technology works effectively across a wide pH range. The presence of sulfate, chloride, and carbonate ions negligibly inhibited Sb(III) removal. Exhausted TiO2-CNT filters can be effectively regenerated using NaOH solution. At 2 V, 100 μg/L Sb(III)-spiked tap water generated ∼1600 bed volumes of effluent with >90% efficiency. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the adsorption energy of Sb(III) onto TiO2 increases (from -3.81 eV to -4.18 eV) and Sb(III) becomes more positively charged upon application of an electrical field.

This CFD study aims to simulate the impact of fiber distance and position on fiber-fiber interaction within a bundle. In order to display the filtration performance of fibers at different positions, a hollow fiber membrane filtration setup based on nine fibers arranged in a 3 × 3 square array was constructed. A CFD porous media model approach was employed using the liquid phase as the main phase. The numerical simulation of multiphase flow on the average velocity of each fiber is validated by the experimental results. The presence of “bundle resistance” and “permeate competition” among fibers was confirmed by the axial liquid velocity simulation. When fiber distance was less than the fiber diameter, the interaction between fibers became notable due to “permeate competition”. When fiber distance was equal to fiber diameter, the “permeate competition” effect disappeared, while the “bundle resistance” became dominant within the bundle. When the fiber distance was larger than the fiber diameter, both “permeate competition” and “bundle resistance” could be neglected. The variations of fiber flux at different positions along the fiber height also proved the distribution of axial liquid velocity and sludge density in the bundle. These results highlight the difference between fiber distance and position in the bundle that ensured the fouling deposition.

Microplastics (MPs, plastic particles < 5 mm) are an ever-increasing global issue due to their widespread occurrence in the environment and negative effects on organisms. Currently, more than 96 % of MPs studies are related to marine systems. However, the majority of marine MPs pollution has been confirmed to originate from land-based sources, evidence of MPs in the terrestrial system cannot be overlooked. In this manuscript, up-to-date knowledge regarding the sources and occurrence of MPs from the terrestrial system is comprehensively reviewed. According to the different studies both in China and abroad, microfibers derived from textile washing attributed approximately 35 % of the MPs identified in the aquatic system. Additionally, personal care and cosmetic products, tires, agricultural plastic films, artificial turfs and road paints, landfill, littering, packaging and construction industry can also release MPs to the environment. The aquatic system plays an important role in MPs transport. By using a one-way ANOVA test, polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) accounted for significantly higher percentages than other polymer compositions in surface water. Polyamide (PA) and PP accounted for the majority of polymers in soils. PP, PE, and polystyrene (PS) presented an overwhelming proportion in sediment. Atmospheric deposition presents a new vehicle for entering into the wider environment. More research is urgently required on the topic of exposure risk of atmospheric MPs via inhalation. Morphological characteristics including shapes, sizes, and colors have been discussed among waters, soils, sediments and airborne. These source-occurrence implications continuum summaries can bring us new insights that we cannot underestimate the severity of MPs from land-based sources and should pay more attention to MPs contamination in the terrestrial ecosystem.

Herein, an electrochemical carbon nanotubes (CNT) filter modified with MIL-101(Fe) has been designed for the electro-Fenton applications by serving as a functional flow-through electrode. Under an electric field, the hybrid filter enabled the in situ generation of H2O2 via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction, which promoted the production of HO by the accelerated Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling of MIL-101(Fe). It was observed that 93.2 ± 1.2% tetracycline and 69.0 ± 0.8% total organic carbon (TOC) were removed in 2 h under the optimized conditions. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and radical scavenging experiments revealed that HO predominated the tetracycline degradation. As compared to the batch reactor, the performance of the proposed system was improved by 5.6 times owing to the convection-enhanced mass transport. The plausible working mechanism and degradation pathway were also subsequently proposed. The findings reported in this study provide a promising insight for the environmental remediation by integrating nanotechnology and Fenton chemistry.

The waterlogging environment generally results in the deposition of iron plaque on plant roots, which may impact the fate of metal-based nanoparticles. Here, we investigated the influence of iron plaque on the uptake, translocation, and transformation of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in rice plants. The results show that the presence of iron plaque dramatically reduced the Cu contents in roots and shoots by 89% and 78% of those without iron plaque under 100 mg/L CuO NP treatment. Meanwhile, the Cu accumulation in plants was negatively related to the amount of iron plaque. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated lower percentage of CuO but higher proportion of Cu(I) in shoots exposed to CuO NPs with the formation of iron plaque. Furthermore, micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) combined with μ-XANES revealed that the iron plaque in the root epidermis and exodermis consisted of goethite and ferrihydrite, which hindered the uptake of CuO NPs by roots. However, a few CuO NPs were still absorbed by roots via root hairs or lateral roots, and further translocated to shoots. But eventually, more than 90% of total Cu(II) was reduced to Cu(I)-cysteine and Cu2O in leaf veins of rice plants with iron plaque.

Persulfates are recognized as promising oxidants and an alternative to Fenton reaction for water treatment. However, activation methods in hand restrict the practical application. Herein, we explore the possibility of Fe-N complexes being a catalyst for persulfate activation for the first time. The catalyst denoted as Fe-Im-SBA was synthesized from ferric chloride, imidazole, and SBA-15 at high temperature. The internal pore structure of Fe-Im-SBA was maintained well; Fe, N and C elements are evenly distributed on the catalyst. This catalyst presents an extraordinarily catalytic activity for Rh B removal by PMS activation with a removal rate of Rh B that reached up to 97.0% in the first 5 min. It also performed well in a wide pH range with complete removal of Rh B in pH ranged from 0.5 to 10, suggesting the stability of this catalyst in both acidic and alkaline conditions. It also showed high adaptability to degrade different kinds of pollutants, which could give an attractive advantage of Fe-Im-SBA for environmental implications. Through X-ray absorption spectroscopies analysis, it shows that the active sites of Fe-Im-SBA are composed of Fe-N4 sites and Fe2–N2 sites. 1O2 were proved to generate in the Fe-Im-SBA/PMS system and serve as the major ROS. Meanwhile, graphitic carbon can accelerate the transfer of electrons, which may also be the reason for its high catalytic performance.

In this work, we rationally designed a high-performance microreactor system for continuous-flow catalysis. The membrane consists of ultrasmall gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and two-dimensional graphene. The Au cores of the NCs act as catalysts, while their ligands have two functions: (1) protecting the Au cores to avoid agglomeration and (2) providing a well-defined surfactant assembly to disperse graphene in aqueous solution. Hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was employed as model reaction to evaluate catalytic activity. The catalytic membrane microreactor demonstrated excellent catalytic activity and stability, where complete 4-NP conversion was readily achieved via a single pass through the membrane. Chitosan-metal complexes have been widely studied in wastewater treatment, but there are still various factors in complex preparation which are collectively responsible for improving the adsorption capacity need to be further studied. Thus, this study investigates the factors affecting the adsorption ability of chitosan-metal complex adsorbents, including various kinds of metal centers, different metal salts and crosslinking degree. The results show that the chitosan-Fe(III) complex prepared by sulfate salts exhibited the best adsorption efficiency (100%) for various dyes in very short time duration (10min), and its maximum adsorption capacity achieved 349.22mg/g. The anion of the metal salt which was used in preparation played an important role to enhance the adsorption ability of chitosan-metal complex. SO42- ions not only had the effect of crosslinking through electrostatic interaction with amine group of chitosan polymer, but also could facilitate the chelation of metal ions with chitosan polymer during the synthesis process. Additionally, the pH sensitivity and the sensitivity of ionic environment for chitosan-metal complex were analyzed. We hope that these factors affecting the adsorption of the chitosan-metal complex can help not only in optimizing its use but also in designing new chitosan-metal based complexes.

Efficient cycling of Fe3+/Fe2+ is a key step for the Fenton reaction. In this exploration, from microalgae, we have prepared a novel Fe-N-graphene wrapped Al2O3/pentlandite composite which showed high Fenton catalytic ability through accelerating of Fe3+ reduction. The catalyst exhibits high activity, good reusability along with stability, and wide adaptation for the organics degradation under neutral pH. High TON and H2O2 utilization efficiency have also reached by this catalyst. Characterization results disclose a unique structure that the layered Fe-N-graphene structure tightly covers on Al2O3/pentlandite particles. Mechanistic evidence suggests that the accelerated Fe3+/Fe2+ redox cycle originates from the enhanced electron transfer by the synergistic effect of Fe, Ni and Al in the catalyst, and it causes the low H2O2 consumption and high •OH generation rate. Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are largely used in textile auxiliaries for the water/oil repellent finishing and have been listed as substances of very high concerns globally. Quantifying the generations and emissions of PFCs from textile and dyeing enterprises is of great significance to realizing the cleaner production management. In this study, congener- and isomer-specific PFCs were measured in regulation tank influent and final effluent from 48 textile plants in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The median ∑17 PFC concentrations in influent and effluent were 428.5 and 268.0 ng/L, respectively. Short- and medium-chain homologues accounted for three-quarters of the total PFCAs in these wastewater samples. Isomeric fingerprints showed an overwhelming occurrence of linear isomers rather than branched ones for PFOA, PFOS and PFHxS. This implied that PFCs in textile wastewater might not be exclusively from a 3M electrochemical fluorination (ECF) source. Raw materials played an important role in PFCs distributions since significantly higher levels of PFHpA, PFHxA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUnDA and PFTrDA were found in wastewater from chemical fibre manufacturing than from manufacturing of other materials. There was no significant discrepancy in PFCs removal rates between different treatments techniques. Although ecological risk assessment revealed an absent health risks of PFCs from effluent in the short term, the implement of textile cleaner production warrants concern due to the high volumes of water per unit fabric for processing. The widespread PFCs occurrence in textile wastewater highlighted the urgency of PFCs removal and disposal. We also encouraged the replacement of synthetic substances with natural materials, adoptions of technical improvements, and innovations such as life cycle analysis or cluster process management in the development of the textile industry.

Structural stability and high ionic and electronic conductivity are crucial for the performance of Li-ion batteries. To improve the electrochemical performance of Li-rich Mn-based cathode material, we have adopted a combination of bulk doping and surface coating rather than a single modification, thereby enhancing structural stability and conductivity. This combination is achieved tactfully by one-step method using surface coating on hollow material. After coating and treatment at high temperature, elements from coating layer substitute transition metal elements and distribute gradiently throughout the entire shell of cathode material, showing collective advantages of element doping and surface coating. The modified samples show enhanced rate capability and cycling stability. We discuss the relationship between battery performance and structural improvement.

Particle morphology structure design combined with surface modification has been applied to improve the electrochemical properties of lithium rich layered oxides. Hollow spherical lithium rich layered Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 oxides with different shell thickness are synthesized by co-precipitation followed by calcination. The morphology and interior structure have been investigated by SEM and cross section, and their electrochemical properties have been evaluated to identify an appropriate shell thickness. Furthermore, a Zr compound coating layer has been applied to modify the interface between corrosive electrolyte and hollow spherical particles with an appropriate shell thickness. The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows hollow spherical structure and Zr compound coating layer both can modificate the electronic and ionic transmission capacities and inhibit their deterioration during charge-discharge process at the same time. The HRTEM tests indicate that hollow spherical structure and Zr compound coating layer can dramatically suppress Mn dissolution in electrolyte and make the crystal structure more stable during the electrode process. Therefore, a surface modification combine with the hollow spherical structure (with an appropriate shell thickness) can effectively enhance these electrochemical properties of lithium ion layered oxides.

Due to the relatively lower potential health risks as well as the good affinity for fluoride anion, calcium-based minerals have been widely carried out for the adsorption of fluoride. The improvement of adsorption capacity can be accomplished by regulation of particle size, shape and structure. Thus, here we report the controllable synthesis of petal-like nanosheets of brushite by using chitosan as a regulator. The addition of chitosan polymer in calcium precursor not only could serve ideal nucleation sites but also could play a vital role in confining the calcium phosphate aggregates and thus controlling the size of the brushite flakes. When the concentration of chitosan was 0.01wt%, the as-synthesized brushite showed nanosheet-structured with the dimensions ranged from 100 to 200nm and displayed outstanding fluoride adsorption capacity of 231.5mg/g according to the fitted Langmuir model, which was comparatively higher than that of the previously reported calcium-based adsorbents. Moreover, the pH change and common co-existing anions in solution almost presented less negative effect on the F- adsorption onto petal-like brushite nanosheets. We hope that these petal-like nanosheets based on green nanotechnology can help to achieve the intention of safe drinking water.
