Global mountain ecosystems have garnered significant attention due to their rich biodiversity and crucial ecological functions; however, there is a dearth of research on the variations in soil active organic carbon across altitudinal gradients and their impacts on microbial communities. In this study, soil samples at an altitude of 3,800 m to 4,400 m were collected from Sejira Mountain in the southeast Tibet, and soil active organic carbon components, soil microbial community diversity, composition and structure distribution and their relationships were systematically analyzed. The results revealed a non-linear relationship between the elevation and the contents of soil organic carbon (SOC) and easily oxidized organic carbon (ROC), with an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease, reaching their peak at an altitude of 4,200 m. The Shannon diversity of bacteria exhibited a significant decrease with increasing altitude, whereas no significant change was observed in the diversity of fungi. The bacterial community primarily comprised Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteriota. Among them, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria exhibited a negative correlation with increasing altitude, whereas Actinobacteriota demonstrated a positive correlation with elevation. The fungal communities primarily consisted of Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Mortierellomycota, with Ascomycota prevailing at lower altitudes and Basidiomycota dominating at higher altitudes. The diversity and composition of bacterial communities were primarily influenced by altitude, SOC, ROC, and POC (particulate organic carbon). Soil carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and available phosphorus (AP) emerged as key factors influencing fungal community diversity, while POC played a pivotal role in shaping the composition and structure of the fungal community. In conclusion, we believe that soil active organic carbon components had a greater impact on the bacterial community in the primary forest ecosystem in southeast Tibet with the elevation gradient increasing, which provided a theoretical basis for further understanding of the relationship between the microbial community and soil carbon cycle in the plateau mountain ecosystem under the background of climate change.

To explore the adaptation strategies of the aboveground and underground functional traits of alpine plants along an altitudinal gradient, a typical stand of primitive dark coniferous forests (Abies georgei var. smithii.) in southeastern Tibet was taken as the research object in the present study. PCA and correlation analyses were carried out for different organ functional traits (19 key indicators in total), then RDA analysis was done in conjunction with 12 environmental factors. The variation characteristics of the functional traits of leaves, current-year twigs, trunks and fine roots in 6 continuous altitude gradients and the relationships between functional traits and environmental factors were explored. The results showed that soil organic carbon (SOC) may exert a positive effect on the construction of plant defense tissue via changes in functional traits, altitude (Alt) represents the primary influencing factor of wood density (WD) variation, particulate organic carbon (POC) content mainly affected fine root dry matter (RDWC) content and specific root length (SRL), and total potassium (TK) content was the main factor that affected fine root tissue density (RTD). Leaves, current-year twigs, and fine roots exhibited high production or nutrient acquisition capacity at an altitude of 4,000m and showed strong defense and relatively stable water and nutrient transport capacity. In conclusion, the ecological strategy of Abies georgei var. smithii. in Sejila Mountain was more conservative, and the optimal survival area of Abies georgei var. smithii. was located at 4, 000m on the shady slope of Sejila Mountain. It is of paramount significance for exploring the essence of terrestrial ecosystems and their functional processes in extremely high-altitude environments.

ObjectiveIn order to assess selenium (Se) flux through the soil-plant-human chain in Tibet plateau and explore the reason why local Tibetan adult residents from large scale agricultural production areas in Tibet lacked daily Se intake.MethodsA total of 210 intact highland barley plants and their corresponding cultivated topsoil samples were collected in fields of 14 agricultural counties along Yalung Zangpo River and quantitative dietary data were collected from a cross-sectional survey using a cultural-specific food frequency questionnaire that contained all local Tibetan foods in 2020.ResultsThe mean value of The estimated daily Se dietary intake by each participant was 17.1 ± 1.9 μg/day/adult, the Se concentration in topsoil and highland barley grain were 0.128 ± 0.015 mg/kg and 0.017 ± 0.003 mg/kg, respectively. Although highland barley was the first contributor of dietary Se in local adult residents (34.2%), the dietary Se intake provided by highland barley only about 10% of the EAR value (50 μg/day/adult) currently. A significantly positive relationship was determined between soil total Se content (STSe), available Se content (SASe) and highland barley grain Se content (GSe). The amount of Se in food system depends on a number of soil properties (TOC, pH, clay content, Fe/Mn/Al oxides), climate variables (MAP, MAT) and terrain factor (altitude).ConclusionTo sum up, it can be inferred that the insufficient dietary Se intake of Tibetan adult population living along Yalung Zangbo River is mainly caused by the low Se content in highland barley grain, which was result from the low Se content in cultivated soil. In order to enable adult participants in the present study to achieve recommended dietary Se-intake levels, agronomic fortification with selenised fertilizers applied to highland barley could be a great solution. It is necessary to combine the influencing factors, and comprehensively consider the spatial variation of local soil properties, climatic and topographic conditions, and planting systems.

Functional trait-based plant ecology is often used to study plant survival strategies and growth processes. In this work, the variation regularity of functional traits and their correlations were studied in Abies georgei var. smithii seedlings of different seedling ages found along the altitude gradient (3,800–4,400 m) in Sejila Mountain, Southeast Tibet. The following functional traits of seedlings in five age classes were determined: above-ground functional traits∼leaf thickness (T), leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), and leaf dry matter content (LDMC); below-ground functional traits∼specific stem length (SSL), specific root length (SRL), specific root surface area (SRA), root tissue density (RTD), and root dry matter content (RDMC). Results showed that (1) except for LDMC, most of the functional traits of the seedlings at different altitudes showed a regular change trend over time. The changes in traits caused by seedling age had significant effects on other traits (p < 0.05). Altitude only had significant effects on T, LA, SLA, SRA, RTD, and RDMC (p < 0.05). (2) The correlation between the above- and below-ground traits was more significant in 5-6-year-old seedlings than in other age classes (p < 0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that LA and SLA were the dominant traits of fir seedlings in five age categories Pearson correlation analysis indicated a correlation between RTD and above-ground traits, thus validating the correlation between the above- and below-ground traits of seedlings of Abies georgei var. smithii of different ages. (3) Available potassium, total potassium, and total organic carbon (TOC) had the greatest influence on the traits of 5-6-year-old seedlings. This study revealed that the functional traits of Abies georgei var. smithii seedlings at different altitudesdynamically change with seedling age. The findings help in understanding the growth strategies of seedlings during early development. Future research on the combination of soil factors and seedling traits will provide a theoretical basis for artificial cultivation and protection of native vegetation.

Clarifying the adaptation mechanism of alpine plants to climate or habitat under the alpine environmental gradient on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is substantially important to understand the their geography in alpine regions and their responses to future climate change. The spatial distribution characteristics of functional traits in leaves and current-year twigs of Quercus aquifolioides on five consecutive altitudinal gradients in Southeastern Tibet were analyzed. The relationship between the functional traits and habitat factors (topographic and soil factors) was explored. Key results: the functional traits of leaves and current-year twigs of Quercus aquifolioides in Southeastern Tibet showed significant linear variations along the altitudinal gradients (p < 0.001). Quercus aquifolioides at low altitudes tended to have shorter current-year twigs and less leaves with larger LA (leaf area) and higher RWC (relative water content) than those at high altitudes. Strong trade-off and coordination relationship were found between the functional traits of leaves and those of current-year twigs, respectively. SL (slope) and TN (total nitrogen) contributed the most to leaf functional traits (p < 0.05); AL (altitude) was the main determinant of functional traits in current-year twigs of Quercus aquifolioides in southeast Tibet. In conclusion, our observation demonstrate that the ecological adaptation strategy of Quercus aquifolioides was formed through the trade-off mechanism among various functional traits, the variation of hydrothermal conditions and soil environmental factors caused by altitude in the alpine region lead to differences in functional traits of Quercus aquifolioides along an altitudinal gradient in southeast Tibet.

Carbon metabolism in higher plants is a basic physiological metabolism, and carbon allocation and conversion require the activity of various enzymes in metabolic processes that alter the content and overall composition of sugars in the sink organ. However, it is not known how various enzymes affect carbon metabolism when tomato plants are subjected to water stress or treated with potassium. Although the process of carbon metabolism is very complex, we used the carbon conversion rate to compare and analyze the enzyme activities related to sugar metabolism and find out which carbon conversion rate are the most important. Results showed that water stress and potassium increased carbon import flux in the fruit, which was beneficial to carbon accumulation. Water deficit increased the activity of sucrose synthase (SuSy) and starch phosphorylase (SP) and decreased the activity of sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and adenosine diphosphate glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase) in the source. Water stress increased the activity of acid invertase (AI), SuSy and SP but decreased the activity of AGPase in the sink. Potassium modified the balance of enzymes active in sugar and starch metabolism by increasing the activity of AI, SuSy, SPS and SP and significantly decreasing the activity of AGPase, resulting in increase of hexose. Canonical correlational analysis revealed that the carbon conversion rate was mainly affected by the relative rate of conversion of sucrose to fructose and glucose [p1(t)] and glucose to starch [p5m(t)]. SuSy and AGPase had the greatest effect on enzyme activity in the fruit; respectively regulated p1(t) and p5m(t).

Background: To describe the decomposition characteristics of the litters of Abies georgei var. Smithii forest in Tibet under three different habitat conditions (inside forest, outside forest and forest edge), using filed litterbag method and lab analyses. Methods: The effects of soil nutrient conditions on the decomposition characteristics of litters are analyzed. Results: The difference in habitat conditions exerts significant impact on both litter decomposition rate and nutrient release rate. The soil nutrient factor that dominates litter decomposition differs in different habitat conditions, the biogeochemical cycle between litter and soil organism shares close linking and complex interaction pattern, accompanied with prominent habitat effect. Decomposition rates are generally in a sequence of inside forest >outside forest > forest edge. The coefficient of variation (CV) of monthly decomposition rates are as follows: inside forest (34.83%) < forest edge (57.35%) < outside forest (72.09%). Both C and K present a direct release mode, except for the transient accumulation of C inside forest (net accumulation rate is 7.61%). In contrast, N and P exhibit an enrichment-release pattern. The simulated result of Olson model also indicates that the time needed for decomposition differs under different habitat conditions. The difference in soil nutrients under three habitat conditions is also significant, soil nutrient factors that are highly correlated with litter decomposition rate are TOC, N, SMBC, SMBN contents and w(C): w(N) ratio. Conclusions: TOC content of soil shows maximum correlation with litter decomposition rate (outside forest and forest edge), followed by w(C): w(P) ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
