Recurrence of low-grade appendiceal pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) with splenic invasion and parastomal hernia is exceptionally rare. We present a 47-year-old female with recurrent PMP, four years post-cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). She presented with abdominal distension, splenic invasion, and parastomal hernia. Imaging revealed extensive peritoneal and pelvic metastases, splenic lesions, and parastomal hernia. Intraoperative findings confirmed widespread pseudomyxoma, involving the spleen and diaphragm. She underwent CRS, splenectomy, tumor resection, adhesiolysis, partial colectomy, hernia repair, and diaphragmatic reconstruction, followed by intraoperative HIPEC. Despite postoperative complications, the patient recovered well with no recurrence over 20 months. This case underscores the challenges of managing recurrent PMP with splenic metastases and parastomal hernias, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and personalized therapeutic strategies.

Abstract Background Appendiceal pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a rare tumor from mucinous appendiceal origins, is treated with Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). However, tubing blockages during HIPEC treatment pose a common challenge, impeding the smooth progression of therapy. Few studies to date have explored the incidence and risk factors of tube occlusion during HIPEC in patients with appendiceal PMP, as well as its adverse impact on postoperative complications. Methods From October 2017 to June 2023, a total of 80 patients with appendiceal PMP undergoing combined CRS and HIPEC were included in this study. Tubing blockage events were strictly defined, with patients experiencing blockages during HIPEC treatment allocated to the study group, while those with unobstructed perfusion were assigned to the control group. A comparative analysis was conducted between the two groups regarding post-HIPEC health assessments and occurrence of complications. Risk factors for luminal occlusion during closed HIPEC procedures were identified through univariate and multivariate analysis of data from 303 HIPEC treatments. Results Tubing blockages occurred in 41 patients (51.3%). The study group experienced prolonged gastrointestinal decompression time (4.1 ± 3.0 vs. 2.5 ± 1.7 days, P = 0.003) and prolonged time to bowel movement (6.1 ± 2.3 vs. 5.1 ± 1.8 days, P = 0.022) compared to the control group. There was no significant difference in the incidence of complications between the two groups. The 1-year survival rate postoperatively was 97%, and the 3-year survival rate was 81%, with no association found between tubing blockage and poorer survival. Additionally, In 303 instances of HIPEC treatment among these 80 patients, tube occlusion occurred in 89 cases (89/303, 29.4%). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed age, diabetes, hypertension, and pathology as independent risk factors for tube occlusion. Conclusion Tubing blockages are a common occurrence during HIPEC treatment, leading to prolonged postoperative gastrointestinal functional recovery time. When patients are elderly and have concomitant hypertension and diabetes, along with a histological type of low-grade mucinous tumor, the risk of tube occlusion increases. However, this study did not find a significant correlation between tubing blockage and the incidence of postoperative complications or overall patient survival.

Abstract In the process of natural gas extraction, the phenomenon of liquid loading will affect the efficiency of gas well extraction and reduce the life of the well. Compared with conventional drainage gas extraction technology, the jet pump can not only reduce the bottom back pressure and ensure the stable production of gas reservoirs but also promote the final recovery rate. Since the jet pump relies on the interaction between fluid particles to transfer energy, the energy loss is large and the efficiency is low. To maximize the advantages of the gas‐driven jet pump, this study innovatively combines a static mixer with an annular jet pump. Utilizing the cyclonic effect produced by the static mixer, the original gas‐liquid axial motion is transformed into a stronger vortex motion, and the liquid droplets are changed into a liquid film that is easier to carry, which significantly improves the discharge efficiency of the jet pump. This study uses a combination of numerical simulation and experimental analysis to compare the associated effects of the new annular jet pump (NAJP) and the conventional annular jet pump (CAJP) on the liquid‐carrying performance of gas wells in terms of cyclonic effect, droplet breakage ratio, and pump efficiency. The results show that, compared with CAJP, NAJP increases the mass flow rate of the sucked fluid. The droplet breakage ratio increases by 15.4% year‐on‐year, while the critical liquid‐carrying flow rate is reduced by about 10.7%, resulting in a maximum pumping efficiency of 37%, an increase of about 30.7% year‐on‐year. At the same time, the reduction of the energy coefficient means lower energy consumption. In summary, NAJP is better than CAJP in terms of liquid‐carrying effect and efficiency.

Excessive immune activation within the lesion site can be observed after stroke onset. Such neuroinflammation within the brain parenchyma represents the innate immune response, as well as the result of the additional interactions between peripheral and resident immune cells. Accumulative studies have illustrated that the pathological process of ischemic stroke is associated with resident and peripheral immunity. The infiltration of peripheral immune cells within the brain parenchyma implicitly contributes to secondary brain injuries. Therefore, better understanding of the roles of resident and peripheral immune reactions toward ischemic insult is necessary. In this review, we summarized the interaction between peripheral and resident immunity on systemic immunity and the clinical outcomes after stroke onset and also discussed various potential immunotherapeutic strategies.

Green manure intercropping is an agronomic management practice that effectively increases soil nutrients in understory and reduces weed population. However, the influence of different green manures on soil properties and soil bacterial community in litchi orchards in the tropical regions of China remains largely unknown. Here, we examined the effect of intercropping three leguminous green manure crops in litchi orchards of Hainan Province. No intercropping was used as the control. Different green manures increased the contents of different soil nutrients. For example, Desmodium ovalifolium increased the total nitrogen content by 7.93%; Grona heterocarpos increased the ammonium nitrogen content by 558.85%; and Stylosanthes guianensis increased the available phosphorus content by 1207.34%. However, intercropping with D. ovalifoliu and S. guianensis reduced the content of available potassium by 47.29% and 58.48%, respectively. The intercropping of green manure increased the abundance of several microbial genera, including Bradyrhizobium, Serratia, and Bacillus, which are known to facilitate soil nitrogen accumulation, plant growth, and phosphorus dissolution. Compared with no intercropping, the three intercropping treatments significantly improved the contents of soil ammonium nitrogen and soil available phosphorus in the litchi orchard. Therefore, intercropping with green manure crops in litchi orchards is an effective management measure; however, the choice of the green manure crop should be based on the soil conditions of litchi orchards.

Abstract Background The mortality rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains high worldwide despite surgery and chemotherapy. Immunotherapy is a promising treatment for the rapidly expanding HCC spectrum. Therefore, it is necessary to further explore the immune-related characteristics of the tumour microenvironment (TME), which plays a vital role in tumour initiation and progression. Methods In this research, 866 immune-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by integrating the DEGs of samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-HCC dataset and the immune-related genes from databases (InnateDB; ImmPort). Afterwards, 144 candidate prognostic genes were defined through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Results Seven immune-related prognostic DEGs were identified using the L1-penalized least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox proportional hazards (PH) model, and the ImmuneRiskScore model was constructed on this basis. The prognostic index of the ImmuneRiskScore model was then validated in the relevant dataset. Patients were divided into high- and low-risk groups according to the ImmuneRiskScore. Differences in the immune cell infiltration of patients with different ImmuneRiskScore values were clarified, and the correlation of immune cell infiltration with immunotherapy biomarkers was further explored. Conclusion The ImmuneRiskScore of HCC could be a prognostic marker and can reflect the immune characteristics of the TME. Furthermore, it provides a potential biomarker for predicting the response to immunotherapy in HCC patients.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to compare the difference of clinical efficacy between conventional intraperitoneal chemotherapy and HIPEC, so as to explore the clinical application value and advantages of HIPEC. Design A retrospective analysis was conducted on 80 patients with malignant ascites admitted to our hospital from June 2017 to June 2019. The general clinical data and qualitative data of the treatment results of 80 patients with malignant ascites were processed by SPSS19.0 using χ 2 test, and quantitative data were processed by t test. P < 0.05, statistical data can be considered statistically significant. Results 1. There was no significant change in vital signs and temperature in the observation group during the treatment, and the difference was not statistically significant. 2. The short-term total effective rate of patients in the observation group was 91.11%, and the short-term total effective rate of the patients in the control group was 40%. 3. There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups of patients. Conclusion Intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy combined with intravenous chemotherapy can significantly control malignant ascites and has small adverse reactions, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that results in a chronic and inflammatory disorder. Dynamic balance of helper T cells (Th) 1 and 17 and regulatory T cells (Treg) is broken in RA. Since there is no cure for RA at present, it is necessary to find a truly effective and convenient treatment. Several studies have intended to induce ergotopic regulation to treat autoimmune diseases. This study was undertaken to find potential ergotope peptides and investigate their effects in treating the animal model of RA and their underlying regulatory mechanisms. First, we selected functional ergotope peptides from 25 overlapping peptides derived from the interleukin 2 receptor (IL-2R) α chain, and then used these peptides to treat collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). We showed ergotope peptides as immunomodulatory factors with great benefits at the clinical and pathologic levels. This effect was associated with inhibition of type II collagen (CII)-specific proliferation and autoantibody production as well as induction of antiergotypic immune response, downregulation of both Th1 and Th17 cells and their related components, and emergence of Treg cells that had suppressive action on autoreactive T cells. We also proved that cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4) and IL-10 are two important mediators that are critical to Treg suppressive function. Inhibition of Th1 and Th17 in established CIA could be attributed to ergotope-induced Treg cells. Our findings reveal that ergotope peptides induce regulatory immune responses and restore immune tolerance, suggesting that treatment with ergotope peptides may be a novel approach to therapy for RA patients and has good application prospects, with cheap, effective, convenient, wide-spectrum features.

The aim of this study is to determine whether the regulatory role of T cell vaccination (TCV) is through inhibition of Th1/Th17/Tfh and production of autoantibodies on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). First, CIA mice were treated with TCV. After disease onset, the incidence and severity of change in joint histopathology were evaluated. Mice in the TCV-treated group showed less disease severity and less infiltration of inflammatory cells in the joint sections. TCV decreased the frequencies of Th1/Th17/Tfh cells and related cytokines. Reduction of IL-21 may be associated with both Tfh and Th17, which further influence B cell and T cell responses. In addition, inhibition of Th1/Th17/Tfh frequencies led to the reduced expression of T-bet, RORα, RORγt, and Bcl6. Lastly, the proliferation of type-II-collagen-(CII-) specific T cells and the production of anti-CII antibodies were inhibited in the TCV-treated group. The results provide novel evidence that the therapeutic effects of TCV on CIA are associated with the inhibition of Th1/Th17/Tfh frequencies and autoantibodies production.

Spinal cord injuries impose a notably economic burden on society, mainly because of the severe after-effects they cause. Despite the ongoing development of various therapies for spinal cord injuries, their effectiveness remains unsatisfactory. However, a deeper understanding of metabolism has opened up a new therapeutic opportunity in the form of metabolic reprogramming. In this review, we explore the metabolic changes that occur during spinal cord injuries, their consequences, and the therapeutic tools available for metabolic reprogramming. Normal spinal cord metabolism is characterized by independent cellular metabolism and intercellular metabolic coupling. However, spinal cord injury results in metabolic disorders that include disturbances in glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and mitochondrial dysfunction. These metabolic disturbances lead to corresponding pathological changes, including the failure of axonal regeneration, the accumulation of scarring, and the activation of microglia. To rescue spinal cord injury at the metabolic level, potential metabolic reprogramming approaches have emerged, including replenishing metabolic substrates, reconstituting metabolic couplings, and targeting mitochondrial therapies to alter cell fate. The available evidence suggests that metabolic reprogramming holds great promise as a next-generation approach for the treatment of spinal cord injury. To further advance the metabolic treatment of the spinal cord injury, future efforts should focus on a deeper understanding of neurometabolism, the development of more advanced metabolomics technologies, and the design of highly effective metabolic interventions.

Leaves are the main organ for photosynthesis and organic synthesis in cotton. Leaf shape has important effects on photosynthetic efficiency and canopy formation, thereby affecting cotton yield. Previous studies have shown that LMI1 (LATE MERISTEM IDENTITY1) is the main gene regulating leaf shape. In this study, the LMI1 gene was inserted into the 35S promoter expression vector, and cotton plants overexpressing LMI1 (OE) were obtained through genetic transformation. Statistical analysis of the biological traits of the T1 and T2 populations showed that compared to the wild type (WT), OE plants had significantly larger leaves, thicker stems and significantly greater dry weight. Furthermore, plant sections of the main vein and petiole showed that the numbers of cells in those tissues of OE plants were significantly greater. In addition, RNA-seq analysis revealed the differential expression of genes related to gibberellin synthesis and NAC gene family (genes containing the NAC domain) between the OE and WT plants, suggesting that LMI1 is involved in secondary wall formation and cell proliferation, which promotes stem thickening. Moreover, Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed enrichment in the terms of calcium ion binding, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed enrichment in the terms of fatty acid degradation, phosphatidylinositol signal transduction system, and cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) signal pathway. These results suggested that LMI1 OE plants are responsive to gibberellin hormone signals, and have altered messenger signals (cAMP, Ca2+) which amplify this function, to promote stronger aboveground vegetative growth. This study found the LMI1 greatly increased the vegetative growth in cotton, which is the basic requirement for higher yield.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has emerged as a pressing concern among college students, with cumulative ecological risk identified as a crucial yet enigmatic contributor. To unravel its underlying mechanisms, we devised and validated a model that delves into the mediating roles of performance and learning goal orientations, as well as the moderating influence of psychological resilience. Our investigation encompassed 2011 Chinese college students spanning from freshmen to seniors, aged 16 to 25, utilizing comprehensive scales to assess various constructs. The findings revealed that both performance and learning goal orientations serve as pivotal mediators in the relationship between cumulative ecological risk and PSU. Furthermore, psychological resilience was found to moderate not only the direct link between cumulative ecological risk and PSU but also the indirect pathway through learning goal orientation. These insights underscore the practical significance of fostering healthy achievement goals and enhancing psychological resilience among college students, thereby mitigating the prevalence of PSU.

As the first barrier for food against pollution, food packaging plays a crucial role in food production, which greatly impacts both the quality and safety of food. Recently, the increasing use of conventional plastic packaging has posed a significant threat to the environment. Meanwhile, cases of foodborne poisoning caused by microbial contamination emerge endlessly. On this background, biodegradable antimicrobial film prepared with natural biological materials has a broad application in future food packaging materials. This article reviews the research progress of biodegradable and antimicrobial films based on biological materials (polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids) and their application in food packaging. And introduces the application of different antimicrobial agents (Synthetic and natural antimicrobial agents) in antimicrobial films. Moreover, discusses the effect of the addition of antibacterial agents on the properties of packing and the antibacterial activities of films. Finally, the shortcomings of food packaging-related fields are discussed. The development of biodegradable antimicrobial food packaging films in the future is prospected.

IntroductionThe biosynthesis of secondary metabolites like anthocyanins is often governed by metabolic gene clusters (MGCs) in the plant ancestral genome. However, the existence of gene clusters specifically regulating anthocyanin accumulation in certain organs is not well understood.Methods and resultsIn this study, we identify MGCs linked to the coloration of cotton reproductive organs, such as petals, spots, and fibers. Through genetic analysis and map-based cloning, we pinpointed key genes on chromosome A07, such as PCC/GhTT19, which is involved in anthocyanin transport, and GbBM and GhTT2-3A, which are associated with the regulation of anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin biosynthesis. Our results demonstrate the coordinated control of anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin pathways, highlighting the evolutionary significance of MGCs in plant adaptation. The conservation of these clusters in cotton chromosome A07 across species underscores their importance in reproductive development and color variation. Our study sheds light on the complex biosynthesis and transport mechanisms for plant pigments, emphasizing the role of transcription factors and transport proteins in pigment accumulation.DiscussionThis research offers insights into the genetic basis of color variation in cotton reproductive organs and the potential of MGCs to enhance our comprehension of plant secondary metabolism.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play a critical regulatory role in degenerative diseases; however, their functions and therapeutic applications in intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) have not been explored. Here, we identified that a novel circATXN1 highly accumulates in aging nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) accountable for IVDD. CircATXN1 accelerates cellular senescence, disrupts extracellular matrix organization, and inhibits mitochondrial respiration. Mechanistically, circATXN1, regulated by heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2B1-mediated splicing circularization, promotes progerin translocation from the cell nucleus to the cytoplasm and inhibits the expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R). To demonstrate the therapeutic potential of circATXN1, siRNA targeting the backsplice junction of circATNX1 was screened and delivered by tetrahedral framework nucleic acids (tFNAs) due to their unique compositional and tetrahedral structural features. Our siRNA delivery system demonstrates superior abilities to transfect aging cells, clear intracellular ROS, and enhanced biological safety. Using siRNA–tFNAs to silence circATXN1, aging NPCs exhibit reduced mislocalization of progerin in the cytoplasm and up-regulation of IGF-1R, thereby demonstrating a rejuvenated cellular phenotype and improved mitochondrial function. In vivo, administering an aging cell-adapted siRNA nucleic acid framework delivery system to progerin pathologically expressed premature aging mice (zmpste24−/−) can ameliorate the cellular matrix in the nucleus pulposus tissue, effectively delaying IVDD. This study not only identified circATXN1 functioning as a cell senescence promoter in IVDD for the first time, but also successfully demonstrated its therapeutic potential via a tFNA-based siRNA delivery strategy.

Abstract Background Anthocyanins, a class of specialized metabolites that are ubiquitous among plant species, have attracted a great deal of attention from plant biologists due to their chemical diversity. They confer purple, pink, and blue colors that attract pollinators, protect plants from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) to facilitate plant survival during abiotic stress. In a previous study, we identified Beauty Mark (BM) in Gossypium barbadense as an activator of the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway; this gene also directly led to the formation of a pollinator-attracting purple spot. Results Here, we found that a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (C/T) within the BM coding sequence was responsible for variations in this trait. Transient expression assays of BM from G. barbadense and G. hirsutum in Nicotiana benthamiana using luciferase reporter gene also suggested that SNPs in the coding sequence could be responsible for the absent beauty mark phenotype observed in G. hirsutum. We next demonstrated that the beauty mark and UV floral patterns are associated phenotypes and that UV exposure resulted in increased ROS generation in floral tissues; BM thus contributed to ROS scavenging in G. barbadense and wild cotton plants with flowers containing the beauty mark. Furthermore, a nucleotide diversity analysis and Tajima’s D Test suggested that there have been strong selective sweeps in the GhBM locus during G. hirsutum domestication. Conclusions Taken together, these results suggest that cotton species differ in their approaches to absorbing or reflecting UV light and thus exhibit variations in floral anthocyanin biosynthesis to scavenge reactive ROS; furthermore, these traits are related to the geographic distribution of cotton species.

Abstract Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes blood‐spinal cord barrier (BSCB) disruption, leading to secondary damage, such as hemorrhagic infiltration, inflammatory response, and neuronal cell death. It is of great significance to rebuild the BSCB at the early stage of SCI to alleviate the secondary injury for better prognosis. Yet, current research involved in the reconstruction of BSCB is insufficient. Accordingly, we provide a thermosensitive hydrogel‐based G protein‐coupled receptor 124 (GPR124) delivery strategy for rebuilding BSCB. Herein, we firstly found that the expression of GPR124 decreased post‐SCI and demonstrated that treatment with recombinant GPR124 could partially alleviate the disruption of BSCB post‐SCI by restoring tight junctions (TJs) and promoting migration and tube formation of endothelial cells. Interestingly, GPR124 could also boost the energy metabolism of endothelial cells. However, the absence of physicochemical stability restricted the wide usage of GPR124. Hence, we fabricated a thermosensitive heparin‐poloxamer (HP) hydrogel that demonstrated sustained GPR124 production and maintained the bioactivity of GPR124 (HP@124) for rebuilding the BSCB and eventually enhancing functional motor recovery post‐SCI. HP@124 hydrogel can encapsulate GPR124 at the lesion site by injection, providing prolonged release, preserving wounded tissues, and filling injured tissue cavities. Consequently, it induces synergistically efficient integrated regulation by blocking BSCB rupture, decreasing fibrotic scar formation, minimizing inflammatory response, boosting remyelination, and regenerating axons. Mechanistically, giving GPR124 activates energy metabolism via elevating the expression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase 2 (PCK2), and eventually restores the poor state of endothelial cells. This research demonstrated that early intervention by combining GPR124 with bioactive multifunctional hydrogel may have tremendous promise for restoring locomotor recovery in patients with central nervous system disorders, in addition to a translational approach for the medical therapy of SCI.

The current effective method for treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI) is to reconstruct the biological microenvironment by filling the injured cavity area and increasing neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) to repair SCI. However, the method is characterized by several challenges including irregular wounds, and mechanical and electrical mismatch of the material-tissue interface. In the current study, a unique and facile agarose/gelatin/polypyrrole (Aga/Gel/PPy, AGP3) hydrogel with similar conductivity and modulus as the spinal cord was developed by altering the concentration of Aga and PPy. The gelation occurred through non-covalent interactions, and the physically crosslinked features made the AGP3 hydrogels injectable. In vitro cultures showed that AGP3 hydrogel exhibited excellent biocompatibility, and promoted differentiation of NSCs toward neurons whereas it inhibited over-proliferation of astrocytes. The in vivo implanted AGP3 hydrogel completely covered the tissue defects and reduced injured cavity areas. In vivo studies further showed that the AGP3 hydrogel provided a biocompatible microenvironment for promoting endogenous neurogenesis rather than glial fibrosis formation, resulting in significant functional recovery. RNA sequencing analysis further indicated that AGP3 hydrogel significantly modulated expression of neurogenesis-related genes through intracellular Ca2+ signaling cascades. Overall, this supramolecular strategy produces AGP3 hydrogel that can be used as favorable biomaterials for SCI repair by filling the cavity and imitating the physiological properties of the spinal cord.

PurposeDepression disorder is the most commonly diagnosed type of mental illness among youths. Although a plethora of evidence suggests a positive relationship between exercise and lower levels of depression in youths, the findings regarding the variation in magnitude of this relationship are inconclusive with respect to the preventive and therapeutic effects of different types of exercise. This network meta-analysis aimed to determine the best type of exercise for the treatment and prevention of depression in youths.MethodsA comprehensive search of databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsychINFO, ProQuest, Wanfang, and CNKI, was conducted to identify relevant research on exercise interventions for depression in youth populations. The risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated using Cochrane Review Manager 5.4 according to the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 Methodological Quality Evaluation Criteria. The network meta-analysis was performed using STATA 15.1 to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) of all concerned outcomes. The node-splitting method was used to test the local inconsistency of the network meta-analysis. Funnel plots were used to evaluate the potential impact of bias in this study.ResultUtilizing data extracted from 58 studies (10 countries, 4,887 participants), we found that for depressed youths, exercise is significantly better than usual care in reducing anxiety (SMD = −0.98, 95% CI [-1.50, −0.45]). For non-depressed youths, exercise is significantly better than usual care in reducing anxiety (SMD = −0.47, 95% CI [ −0.66, −0.29]). In the treatment of depression, resistance exercise (SMD = −1.30, 95% CI [ −1.96, −0.64]), aerobic exercise (SMD = −0.83, 95% CI [-1.10 −0.72]), mixed exercise (SMD = −0.67, 95% CI [−0.99, −0.35]), and mind-body exercise (SMD = −0.61, 95% CI [−0.84, −0.38]) all showed significant efficacy over usual care. For the prevention of depression, resistance exercise (SMD = −1.18, 95% CI [-1.65, −0.71]), aerobic exercise (SMD = −0.72, 95% CI [−0.98, −0.47]), mind-body exercise (SMD = −0.59, 95% CI [-0.93, −0.26]), and mixed exercise (SMD = −1.06, 95% CI [−1.37 to −0.75]) were all significantly effective compared to usual care. According to the test of the surface under the cumulative ranking score (SUCRA), the ranking of exercises for the treatment of depression in depressed youths is as follows: resistance exercise (94.9%) > aerobic exercise (75.1%) > mixed exercise (43.8%) > mind-body exercise (36.2%) > usual care (0%). For the prevention of depression in non-depressed youths, resistance exercise (90.3%) > mixed exercise (81.6%) > aerobic exercise (45.5%) > mind-body exercise (32.6%) > usual care (0%). Resistance exercise thus had the best comprehensive effect on both the treatment and prevention of depression in youths (clusterank value = 1914.04). Subgroup analyses show that a frequency of 3–4 times per week, a duration of 30–60 min, and a length of more than 6 weeks were found to be the most effective interventions for depression (P > 0.001).ConclusionThis study provides compelling evidence that exercise is a viable intervention for improving depression and anxiety in young individuals. In addition, the study emphasizes the importance of selecting the appropriate type of exercise to optimize treatment and prevention. Specifically, the results suggest that resistance exercise, performed 3–4 times per week, with sessions lasting 30–60 min and a length of more than 6 weeks, yields optimal results for the treatment and prevention of depression in young individuals. These findings have significant implications for clinical practice, particularly given the challenges associated with implementing effective interventions and the economic burden of treating and preventing depression in young people. However, it is worth noting that additional head-to-head studies are necessary to confirm these findings and strengthen the evidence base. Abstract Background Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is one of the most important economic crops worldwide, and its production plays an important role in the economy of many countries. Genetically modified herbicide-tolerant (GMHT) crops, which were developed to minimize the losses caused by weeds, have gradually become the most widely adopted genetically modified crops in the world due to their economic and environmental benefits. However, the potential ecological and environmental risks of GMHT crops have attracted extensive attention and controversy. Arthropod communities form a prominent part of the biodiversity of agroecosystems and are important indicators of environmental health. Elucidating the effects of GMHT crops on the diversity of arthropod communities is necessary to ensure the safety of GMHT crops. Result In this 2-year study, we investigated the potential impact of GMHT crops on arthropod communities. The GMHT cotton variety GGK2 with glyphosate tolerance and its near-isogenic non-GMHT variety K312 were used for the experimental groups. The Shannon diversity index (H), Simpson diversity index (D), Pielou evenness index (J), and principal co-ordinates analysis (PCoA) of the Bray–Curtis distance were used to evaluate the population dynamics and biodiversity of arthropods in cotton fields. No significant differences were found between GGK2 and K312 in their total abundance of arthropod communities, and biodiversity indexes on most sampling dates. The arthropod composition in the GGK2 and K312 plots was similar. Sampling dates had a significant effect on biodiversity indexes, whereas no clear tendencies related to cotton variety or cotton variety × sampling dates interaction were recorded. In addition, PCoA revealed high similarity between the arthropod communities in the plots of the GMHT cotton variety GGK2 and its near-isogenic variety K312. Conclusion There was no obvious difference in abundance, diversity indexes of arthropod communities between GMHT cotton variety GGK2 and its near-isogenic variety K312 under the small-scale planting regime.

BackgroundInternet addiction (IA) has a significant negative impact on students. The condition of students with IA can be improved by exercise, which has been identified as an effective intervention strategy. However, the relative effectiveness of different exercise types and the most effective ones remains unknown. This study presents a network meta-analysis to compare six exercise types (team sport, double sport, single sport, team + double sport, team + single sport, and team + double + single sport) based on their effectiveness in reducing Internet addiction and maintaining mental health.MethodsSystematic searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wan Fang, CQVIP, Web of Science, CBM, EBSCO, APA PsycNet, and Scopus, and all relevant studies from the beginning to 15 July 2022 were included on. According to the Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 Methodological Quality Evaluation Criteria, the listed studies' bias risk was assessed, while the network meta-analysis was performed using STATA 16.0.ResultsA total of 39 randomized controlled trials that met all inclusion criteria including 2,408 students with IA were examined. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with the control group, exercising significantly improved loneliness, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal sensitivity (p < 0.05). Specifically, the network meta-analysis discovered that the single sport, team sport, double sport, team + double sport, and team + double + single sport had significant effects on improving Internet addiction as compared to the respective control group (p < 0.05); the single sport, team sport, and double sport tend to be effective compared with controls in improving mental health (p < 0.05). Compared with the other five types of sports, the double sport was ranked first and showed the greatest potential to be the best choice (cluster ranking value = 3699.73) in improving Internet addiction (SUCRA = 85.5) and mental health (SUCRA = 93.1).ConclusionExercise could be suggested as the best alternative when treating IA in students, based on the extensive positive effects of exercise on IA, anxiety, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, loneliness, and mental health in IA students. Double sport may be the best type of exercise for Internet-addicted students. Cell-based regenerative therapy utilizes the differentiation potential of stem cells to rejuvenate tissues. But the dynamic fate of stem cells is calling for precise control to optimize their therapeutic efficiency. Stem cell fate is regulated by specific conditions called “microenvironments.” Among the various factors in the microenvironment, the cell-surface glycan acts as a mediator of cell-matrix and cell-cell interactions and manipulates the behavior of cells. Herein, metabolic glycoengineering (MGE) is an easy but powerful technology for remodeling the structure of glycan. By presenting unnatural glycans on the surface, MGE provides us an opportunity to reshape the microenvironment and evoke desired cellular responses. In this review, we firstly focused on the determining role of glycans on cellular activity; then, we introduced how MGE influences glycosylation and subsequently affects cell fate; at last, we outlined the application of MGE in regenerative therapy, especially in the musculoskeletal system, and the future direction of MGE is discussed.

Cell transplantation has been proved the promising therapeutic effects on intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). However, the increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the degenerated region will impede the efficiency of human adipose-derived stem cells (human ADSCs) transplantation therapy. It inhibits human ADSCs proliferation, and increases human ADSCs apoptosis. Herein, we firstly devised a novel amphiphilic copolymer PEG-PAPO, which could self-assemble into a nanosized micelle and load lipophilic kartogenin (KGN), as a single complex (PAKM). It was an injectable esterase-responsive micelle, and showed controlled release ability of KGN and apocynin (APO). Oxidative stimulation promoted the esterase activity in human ADSCs, which accelerate degradation of esterase-responsive micelle. Compared its monomer, the PAKM micelle possessed better bioactivities, which were attributed to their synergistic effect. It enhanced the viability, autophagic activation (P62, LC3 II), ECM-related transcription factor (SOX9), and ECM (Collagen II, Aggrecan) maintenance in human ADSCs. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the injection of PAKM with human ADSCs yielded higher disc height and water content in rats. Therefore, PAKM micelles perform promoting cell survival and differentiation effects, and may be a potential therapeutic agent for IVDD.
