In the search for rational design strategies for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, linking the catalyst structure to activity and stability is key. However, highly active catalysts such as IrOx and RuOx undergo structural changes under OER conditions, and hence, structure-activity-stability relationships need to take into account the operando structure of the catalyst. Under the highly anodic conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), electrocatalysts are often converted into an active form. Here, we studied this activation for amorphous and crystalline ruthenium oxide using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electrochemical scanning electron microscopy (EC-SEM). We tracked the evolution of surface oxygen species in ruthenium oxides while in parallel mapping the oxidation state of the Ru atoms to draw a complete picture of the oxidation events that lead to the OER active structure. Our data show that a large fraction of the OH groups in the oxide are deprotonated under OER conditions, leading to a highly oxidized active material. The oxidation is centered not only on the Ru atoms but also on the oxygen lattice. This oxygen lattice activation is particularly strong for amorphous RuOx. We propose that this property is key for the high activity and low stability observed for amorphous ruthenium oxide.

Advanced in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterization ofelectrochemically co-electrodeposited bi-element copper alloy electrodesshows that zinc yields the formation of a stable cationic Cu species during theelectroreduction of CO2 at high cathodic polarization. In contrast, theformation/stabilization of cationic Cu species in copper oxides, or doping Cuwith another element, like Ni, is not possible. It is found that the pure andmixed Cu:Zn electrodes behave similarly in term of electrocatalytic selectivityto multi-carbon products. At higher Zn concentrations the electrode behaveslike the pure Zn catalyst, which indicates that the Cu cationic species do nothave a significant influence on the selectivity to multi-carbon products. It isfound that in the non-monotonically distribution of products is dominated interm of surface energy in which copper prefers the surface. Otherwise, thiswork highlights the importance of in situ characterization to uncover themechanisms mediating the catalytic reactions in contrast to ex situ or postmortem analysis, which can be a source of misinterpretation.

Afatinib is an irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is utilized for the treatment of patients with advanced lung cancer that harbors EGFR mutations. No studies have evaluated the clinical efficacy of LCT in patients treated with first-line afatinib. In this study, we retrospectively enrolled patients with advanced lung adenocarcinomas harboring susceptible EGFR mutations who were diagnosed and treated with first-line afatinib in three hospitals. A total of 254 patients were enrolled, including 30 (12%) patients who received LCT (15 patients received definitive radiotherapy for the primary lung mass and 15 patients received curative surgery). Patients who received LCT had a significantly longer PFS than those who did not (median PFS: 32.8 vs. 14.5 months, p = 0.0008). Patients who received LCT had significantly longer OS than those who did not (median OS: 67.1 vs. 34.5 months, p = 0.0011). Multivariable analysis showed LCT was an independent prognostic factor for improved PFS (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 0.44 [0.26–0.73], p = 0.0016) and OS (aHR [95% CI]: 0.26 [0.12–0.54], p = 0.0004). The analyses using propensity score-weighting showed consistent results. We conclude that LCT may improve clinical outcomes, in terms of PFS and OS, in patients with advanced EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinomas who are treated with first-line afatinib.

Electrochemical reduction in aqueous graphene oxide (GO) dispersion has emerged as an alternative route to producing a reduced GO (rGO) membrane on Au mesh. Under scanning electron microscopy, an interesting pattern formed by distinct differences was discovered from the deoxidization evolution. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy shows the chemical composition coordination mixing of C–OH, C–O–C, HO–C O, and C O bonds at nanoscale resolution. The electrochemical reduction of C–OH, new bonding of C–O–C, and structure recovery of C C were obtained from GO transformation into the rGO membrane. In Kelvin probe force microscopy, the same pattern of rGO was also observed for the diversity of work functions ranging from 5.55 to 5.70 eV compared with the uniform distribution of GO of 5.78 eV. Density functional theory calculations predicted that the work function variation originated from the dependence of O atom number and functional group species. A high (low) diversity in work function values was ascribed to the C–O–C (HO–C O) bond even with increasing oxygen numbers, accounting for the peak variation. Controlling the work function holds great significance for photovoltaic behavior and band alignment in photoelectric devices. Thus, growing large-area rGO membranes offers a new route to obtaining membranes for applications requiring transparent materials.

Non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts with superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity to platinum (Pt) are highly desirable but their fabrications are challenging and thus impeding their applications in metal-air batteries and fuel cells. Here, we report a facile molten salt assisted two-step pyrolysis strategy to construct carbon nanosheets matrix with uniformly dispersed Fe3N/Fe nanoparticles and abundant nitrogen-coordinated Fe single atom moieties (Fe@FeSA-N-C). Thermal exfoliation and etching effect of molten salt contribute to the formation of carbon nanosheets with high porosity, large surface area and abundant uniformly immobilized active sites. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) image, X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate the generation of Fe (mainly Fe3N/Fe) and FeSA-N-C moieties, which account for the catalytic activity for ORR. Further study on modulating the crystal structure and composition of Fe3N/Fe nanoparticles reveals that proper chemical environment of Fe in Fe3N/Fe notably optimizes the ORR activity. Consequently, the presence of abundant FeSA-N-C moieties, and potential synergies of Fe3N/Fe nanoparticles and carbon shells, markedly promote the reaction kinetics. The as-developed Fe@FeSA-N-C-900 electrocatalyst displays superior ORR performance with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.83 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a diffusion limited current density of 5.6 mA cm−2. In addition, a rechargeable Zn-air battery device assembled by the Fe@FeSA-N-C-900 possesses remarkably stable performance with a small voltage gap without obvious voltage loss after 500 h of operation. The facile synthesis strategy for the high-performance composites represents another viable avenue to stable and low-cost electrocatalysts for ORR catalysis.

Brain metastasis in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations is a factor of poor prognosis. We conducted a retrospective study to determine the optimal treatment strategy for EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients with brain metastasis receiving or not receiving intracranial intervention. A total of 186 patients treated with an EGFR TKI were enrolled in the study, and 79 (42%) received intracranial intervention. Patients who received intracranial intervention and those who did not had a similar treatment response rate (RR), progression-free survival (PFS) (median PFS: 11.0 vs. 10.0 months, p = 0.4842), and overall survival (OS) (median OS: 23.0 vs. 23.2 months, p = 0.2484). Patients treated with gefitinib, erlotinib, afatinib, or osimertinib had a similar RR (63%, 76%, 81%, or 100%, respectively, p = 0.1390), but they had significantly different PFS (median PFS: 7.5, 10.0, 14.8 months, or not reached, respectively, p = 0.0081). In addition, OS tended to be different between different EGFR TKI treatments (median OS of 19.2, 23.7, or 33.0 months for gefitinib, erlotinib, or afatinib treatments, respectively, p = 0.0834). Afatinib and osimertinib both demonstrated significantly longer PFS than gefitinib in a Cox regression model. Graded prognostic assessment (GPA) versions 2017 and 2022 stratified patients with different OS; patients with higher GPA index scores had significantly longer OS (p = 0.0368 and 0.0407 for version 2017 and 2022, respectively).

Simple Summary Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer with limited therapeutic options. Pemetrexed plus platinum is a standard first-line therapy, but options for second-line therapy in patients with relapsed mesothelioma remain controversial. Several drugs were recently introduced to treat relapsed MPM. We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and network meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of these drugs according to published randomized controlled trials. Nivolumab alone or nivolumab plus ipilimumab provided significantly longer overall survival (OS), and treatment with nivolumab plus ipilimumab was associated with the best OS based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). The network meta-analysis revealed that tremelimumab, vorinostat, chemotherapy (CTX), asparagine–glycine–arginine–human tumor necrosis factor plus CTX, nivolumab alone, and nivolumab plus ipilimumab all produced significant progression-free survival (PFS) benefits compared with placebo, with nivolumab plus ipilimumab ranked first for PFS according to SUCRA. Abstract Patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) have very poor prognoses, and pemetrexed plus platinum is the standard first-line therapy. However, the second-line therapy for relapsed MPM remains controversial. A comprehensive search was performed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating various second-line regimens in patients with relapsed MPM. Indirect comparisons of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were performed using network meta-analysis. Surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values were used to rank the included treatments according to each outcome. Nivolumab alone or nivolumab plus ipilimumab provided significantly longer OS than placebo (hazard ratio (HR): 0.72, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.55–0.94 for nivolumab alone; HR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.31–0.92 for nivolumab plus ipilimumab). The best SUCRA ranking for OS was identified for nivolumab plus ipilimumab (SUCRA: 90.8%). Tremelimumab, vorinostat, nivolumab alone, chemotherapy (CTX), asparagine–glycine–arginine–human tumor necrosis factor plus CTX, and nivolumab plus ipilimumab all produced noticeable PFS benefits compared with placebo. Nivolumab plus ipilimumab had the best PFS ranking (SUCRA: 92.3%). Second-line treatment with nivolumab plus ipilimumab provided the OS and PFS outcomes for patients with relapsed MPM.

Background Painful paronychia and pseudopyogenic granuloma (PG) are common adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with the use of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Multiple local management approaches have been tested with unsatisfactory results. We have introduced an occlusion therapy technique through which available topical drugs for longer than 2 years. Methods Based on the cancer registry and case management system of our hospital, from July 2019 to July 2020, we retrospectively enrolled patients with NSCLC who were treated with EGFR-TKIs and received applications of 0.5% timolol ophthalmic solution (TIMOPTOL XE 0.5%®) combined with a neomycin/tyrothricin ointment ( Biomycin®) using the occlusion method to treat paronychia or PG. Results A total of 22 patients were enrolled, with a mean age of 66.5 years, most of whom were women (72.7%). Periungual lesion-related pain was reported by all patients, and periungual bleeding and PG were reported in 14% (3/22) and 64% (14/22) of patients, respectively. After the occlusion therapy application of timolol ophthalmic solution combined with neomycin/tyrothricin ointment twice daily, the overall response rate was 83.3%, including complete response in 18% (4/22) of cases and partial response in 68% (15/22) of cases. Conclusion We presented an occlusion method using available topical beta-blockers and antibiotic ointment for EGFR-TKI-induced paronychia and PG in Taiwan. The result is favorable. Further randomized control trial is urgent to validate our findings

Photoelectron spectroscopy offers detailed information about the electronic structure and chemical composition of surfaces, owing to the short distance that the photoelectrons can escape from a dense medium. Unfortunately, photoelectron based spectroscopies are not directly compatible with the liquids required to investigate electrochemical processes, especially in the soft X-ray regime. To overcome this issue, different approaches based on photoelectron spectroscopy have been developed in our group over the last few years. The performance and the degree of information provided by these approaches are compared with those of the well established bulk sensitive spectroscopic approach of total fluorescence yield detection, where the surface information gained from this approach is enhanced using samples with large surface to bulk ratios. The operation of these approaches is exemplified and compared using the oxygen evolution reaction on IrO

Revealing the active nature of oxide derived copper (OD-Cu) is of key importance to understand its remarkable catalytic performance during the cathodic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce valuable hydrocarbons. Using advanced spectroscopy, electron microscopy and electro active surface area characterization techniques, the electronic structure and the changes in the morphology/roughness of thermally oxidized copper thin films were revealed during CO2RR. For this purpose we developed an in situ cell for X-ray spectroscopy able to be operated accurately in the presence of gases or liquids to unite the role of the initial thermal oxide-phase and its active phase during the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. It was found that the Cu(I) species formed during the thermal treatment are readily reduced to Cu0 during the CO2RR, whereas Cu(II) species are hardly reduced. In addition, Cu(II) oxide electrode dissolution was found to yield a porous/void structure, where the lack of electrical connection between isolated islands prohibits the CO2RR. Therefore, the active/stable phase for CO2RR is metallic copper, independent of its initial phase, with a significant change in its morphology upon its reduction yielding the formation of a rougher surface with higher number of under coordinated sites. Thus, the initial thermal oxidation of copper in air controls the reaction activity/selectivity due to the changes induced in electrode surface morphology/roughness and the presence of more under coordinated sites during the CO2RR.

The variation in the morphology and electronic structure of copper during the electroreduction of CO2 into valuable hydrocarbons and alcohols was revealed by combining in situ surface- and bulk-sensitive X-ray spectroscopies with electrochemical scanning electron microscopy. These experiments proved that the electrified interface surface and near-surface are dominated by reduced copper. The selectivity to the formation of the key C–C bond is enhanced at higher cathodic potentials as a consequence of increased copper metallicity. In addition, the reduction of the copper oxide electrode and oxygen loss in the lattice reconstructs the electrode to yield a rougher surface with more uncoordinated sites, which controls the dissociation barrier of water and CO2. Thus, according to these results, copper oxide species can only be stabilized kinetically under CO2 reduction reaction conditions.

We found that all the approaches, if properly applied, provide similar information about surface oxygen speciation. However, using resonant photoemission spectroscopy, we were able to prove that speciation is more involved and complex than previously thought during the oxygen evolution reaction on IrOx based electrocatalysts. We found that the electrified solid–liquid interface is composed of different oxygen species, where the terminal oxygen atoms on iridium are the active species, yielding the formation of peroxo species and, finally, dioxygen as the reaction product. Thus, the oxygen–oxygen bond formation is dominated by peroxo species formation along the reaction pathway. Furthermore, the methodologies discussed here open up opportunities to investigate electrified solid–liquid interfaces in a multitude of electrochemical processes with unprecedented speciation capabilities, which are not accessible by one-dimensional X-ray spectroscopies.

Various anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitors (ALKIs) have been approved for first-line use in treating anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). To date, no head-to-head comparison of these newer generation ALKIs has been made, and different efficacies of ALKIs may present across ethnicity. This study aims to compare newer generation ALKIs for treatment efficacy in Asian groups using network meta-analysis. Phase II/III trials that enrolled treatment-naïve Asian ALK-rearranged NSCLC patients treated by ALKIs were included. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall response rate (ORR) of each trial were extracted as indicators of drug efficacy. Surfaces under cumulative ranking curves (SUCRAs) were calculated as a numeric presentation of the overall ranking associated with each agent. After a systematic literature review, six phase III clinical trials were included. Our results showed that newer generation ALKIs, such as alectinib, brigatinib, ensartinib, and lorlatinib, all demonstrated superior efficacy to crizotinib. Among those, ensartinib exhibited the best overall SUCRA value and ranked first among all agents. According to our network meta-analysis, ensartinib may currently be the most effective first-line treatment for Asian patients with ALK-positive NSCLC. However, this conclusion needs further validation by a larger scale of clinical trials or posthoc analysis of Asian populations. Moreover, in our comparison, low-dose alectinib (300 mg twice daily) exhibited an efficacy profile similar to a higher dose regimen in Asian populations.

Recently, a novel rechargeable Al ion battery (AIB) with high performance has been developed. Owing to its low cost, high-rate capability, excellent cyclability, and non-flammability, AIB provides a safe alternative to many commercial batteries used in the energy storage system. To improve its performance, identifying molecular structure and arrangement of chloroaluminate anion (AlCl4−) intercalated in the graphite layer remains a great challenge. In this work, operando analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy were performed to investigate the intercalation of AlCl4− anion and related molecular arrangement in the graphite layers. The intercalated stage and intercalant gallery height of graphite cathode electrode during AIB battery operation were observed to be stage 3 and 9.22 A, respectively. Furthermore, the spectral evolution from ex-situ XAS at the Al and Cl K-edge was associated with closely packed intercalation of AlCl4− molecules. With density functional theory (DFT) calculation, three simulated models of intercalated AlCl4− molecules in the graphite layer were revealed successfully, which explained possible molecular structures at different charging states. This analytical methodology paves the way for better understanding the structural transformation of molecular ions de-/intercalation in graphite layers.

Simple Summary The prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is poor as more than half of the patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage. The outcomes have greatly improved in the recent two decades due to the introduction of target therapy. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement is the second most common driver mutation found in lung cancer, and several ALK inhibitors have shown excellent efficacy. However, head-to-head randomized controlled trials of these agents are lacking. We conducted this systematic review and network meta-analysis to indirectly compare the currently available ALK inhibitors. In summary, lorlatinib had the highest probability of the best progression-free survival in first-line treatment of ALK-positive NSCLC, followed by low-dose (300 mg twice daily) alectinib, high-dose (600 mg twice daily) alectinib, brigatinib, ensartinib, and ceritinib. Lorlatinib was associated with the best objective response rate and the highest probability of grade 3–5 adverse effects. Low-dose alectinib had the best safety profile. Abstract Several anaplastic lymphoma kinase inhibitors (ALKIs) have demonstrated excellent efficacy on overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response rate (ORR), and also better adverse effect (AE) profiles compared to cytotoxic chemotherapy in advanced stage anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in phase III randomized clinical trials (RCTs). We conducted this systematic review and network meta-analysis to provide a ranking of ALKIs for treatment-naïve ALK-positive patients in terms of PFS, ORR, and AEs. In addition, a sub-group analysis of treatment benefits in patients with baseline brain metastasis was also conducted. Contrast-based analysis was performed for multiple treatment comparisons with the restricted maximum likelihood approach. Treatment rank was estimated using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA), as well as the probability of being the best (Prbest) reference. All next-generation ALKIs were superior to crizotinib in PFS but lorlatinib and brigatinib had increased AEs. The probability of lorlatinib being ranked first among all treatment arms was highest (SUCRA = 93.3%, Prbest = 71.8%), although there were no significant differences in pairwise comparisons with high- (600 mg twice daily) and low- (300 mg twice daily) dose alectinib. In subgroup analysis of patients with baseline brain metastasis, low-dose alectinib had the best PFS (SUCRA = 87.3%, Prbest = 74.9%). Lorlatinib was associated with the best ranking for ORR (SUCRA = 90.3%, Prbest = 71.3%), although there were no significant differences in pairwise comparisons with the other ALKIs. In addition, low-dose alectinib had the best safety performance (SUCRA = 99.4%, Prbest = 97.9%). Lorlatinib and low-dose alectinib had the best PFS and ORR in the overall population and baseline brain metastasis subgroup, respectively. Low-dose alectinib had the lowest AE risk among the available ALKIs. Further head-to-head large-scale phase III RCTs are needed to verify our conclusions.

In situ x-ray spectroscopies offer a powerful way to understand the electronic structure of the electrode–electrolyte interface under operating conditions. However, most x-ray techniques require vacuum, making it necessary to design spectro-electrochemical cells with a delicate interface to the wet electrochemical environment. The design of the cell often dictates what measurements can be done and which electrochemical processes can be studied. Hence, it is important to pick the right spectro-electrochemical cell for the process of interest. To facilitate this choice, and to highlight the challenges in cell design, we critically review four recent, successful cell designs. Using several case studies, we investigate the opportunities and limitations that arise in practical experiments.

Peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase NIMA-interacting 1 (Pin1) specifically binds and isomerizes the phosphorylated serine/threonine-proline (pSer/Thr-Pro) motif, which leads to changes in protein conformation and function. Pin1 is widely overexpressed in cancers and plays an important role in tumorigenesis. Mounting evidence has revealed that targeting Pin1 is a potential therapeutic approach for various cancers by inhibiting cell proliferation, reducing metastasis, and maintaining genome stability. In this review, we summarize the underlying mechanisms of Pin1-mediated upregulation of oncogenes and downregulation of tumor suppressors in cancer development. Furthermore, we also discuss the multiple roles of Pin1 in cancer hallmarks and examine Pin1 as a desirable pharmaceutical target for cancer therapy. We also summarize the recent progress of Pin1-targeted small-molecule compounds for anticancer activity.

This study simulated the after-burned zirconium cladding oxidation in air at temperatures between 500 and 800 °C. The weight changes of Zircaloy-4 cladding with hydrogen contents of 100–1000 ppm continuously measured through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) during oxidation tests at different temperatures in an air atmosphere. The TGA results indicate a transition of oxidation kinetics from a parabolic rate law to a linear rate law for as-received and hydrided Zircaloy-4 cladding. The hydrogen concentration of Zircaloy-4 had a marked effect on its pre-transition oxidation in air between 500 and 800 °C. For all samples, the linear oxidation (post transition stage) at 650 °C, which is the critical oxidation temperature, displays a similar trend. In addition, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron micros-copy examinations indicated the presence of a few and numerous discontinuous micro-cracks in the oxide layer in the pre-transition and post-transition stages, respectively.

Iridium and its oxides/hydroxides are the best candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction under harsh acidic conditions owing to the low overpotential and the high corrosion resistance observed for Ir-based anodes. Herein, by means of cutting edge operando surface and bulk sensitive X-ray spectroscopy techniques, specifically designed electrode nano-fabrication and ab initio DFT calculations, we were able to reveal the electronic structure of the active IrOx centers (i.e. oxidation state) during electrocatalytic oxidation of water in the surface and bulk of high-performance Ir-based catalysts. We found the oxygen evolution reaction is controlled by the formation of empty Ir 5d states in the surface ascribed to the formation of formally IrV species leading to the appearance of electron-deficient oxygen species bound to single iridium atoms (µ1-O and µ1-OH) that are responsible for water activation and oxidation, due to the bound oxygen’s transformation into an oxyl susceptible to nucleophilic attack water. Oxygen bound to three iridium centers (µ3-O) remains the dominant species in the bulk but do not participate directly in the electrocatalytic reaction, suggesting bulk oxidation is limited. In addition a high coverage of a µ1-OO (peroxo) species during the OER is excluded. Moreover, we provide the first photoelectron spectroscopic evidence in bulk electrolyte that the higher surface to bulk ratio in thinner electrodes enhances the material usage involving the precipitation of a significant part of the electrode surface and near-surface active species.

Understanding the role of the oxidation state of the Cu surface and surface-adsorbed intermediate species in electrochemical CO2 reduction is crucial for the development of selective CO2-to-fuel electrocatalysts. In this study, the electrochemical CO2 reduction mechanism over the Cu catalysts with various oxidation states was studied by using in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), in situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (Cu L-edge), and online gas chromatography measurements. The atop-adsorbed CO (COatop) intermediate is obtained on the electrodeposited Cu surface which primarily has the oxidation state of Cu(I). COatop is further reduced, followed by the formation of C1 product such as CH4. The residual bridge-adsorbed CO (CObridge) is formed on the as-prepared Cu surface with Cu(0) which inhibits hydrocarbon formation. In contrast, the CV-treated Cu electrode prepared by oxidizing the as-prepared Cu surface contains different amounts of Cu(I) and Cu(0) states. The major theme of this work is that in situ SEIRAS results show the coexistence of COatop and CObridge as the reaction intermediates during CO2 reduction and that the selectivity of CO2-to-ethylene conversion is further enhanced in the CV-treated Cu electrode. The Cu catalysts modulated by the electrochemical method exhibit different oxidation states and reaction intermediates as well as electrocatalytic properties.

Understanding the role of the oxidation state of the Cu surface and surface-adsorbed intermediate species in electrochemical CO

Focal adhesion kinase (FAK), a non-receptor tyrosine kinase, is overexpressed and activated in many cancer types. FAK regulates diverse cellular processes, including growth factor signaling, cell cycle progression, cell survival, cell motility, angiogenesis, and the establishment of immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments through kinase-dependent and kinase-independent scaffolding functions in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Mounting evidence has indicated that targeting FAK, either alone or in combination with other agents, may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for various cancers. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms underlying FAK-mediated signaling networks during tumor development. We also summarize the recent progress of FAK-targeted small-molecule compounds for anticancer activity from preclinical and clinical evidence.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide, despite many advances being made in recent decades. Changes in the tumor microenvironment, including dysregulated immunity, may contribute to carcinogenesis and cancer progression. The cysteinyl leukotriene (CysLT) pathway is involved in several signal pathways, having various functions in different tissues. We summarized major findings of studies about the roles of the CysLT pathway in cancer. Many in vitro studies suggested the roles of CysLTs in cell survival/proliferation via CysLT1 receptor (CysLT1R). CysLT1R antagonism decreased cell vitality and induced cell death in several types of cancer cells, such as colorectal, urological, breast, lung and neurological malignancies. CysLTs were also associated with multidrug resistance of cancer, and CysLT1R antagonism might reverse chemoresistance. Some animal studies demonstrated the beneficial effects of CysLT1R antagonist in inhibiting tumorigenesis and progression of some cancer types, particularly colorectal cancer and lung cancer. The expression of CysLT1R was shown in various cancer tissues, particularly colorectal cancer and urological malignancies, and higher expression was associated with a poorer prognosis. The chemo-preventive effects of CysLT1R antagonists were demonstrated in two large retrospective cohort studies. In summary, the roles of the CysLT pathway in cancer have been delineated, whereas further studies are still warranted.

The identification of lattice multiphases in TiO2 nanocrystals is studied by high resolution transmission electron microscope and electron diffraction patterns. Based on the spectroscopic analysis using soft x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering, it is believed that the oxygen vacancies at the interface exhibit structural distortion of the TiO68− cluster around the defect site as for the multiphase lattice. We elucidate that the extra 3d electrons nearby induce the inelastic scattering features with the excitation energy dependence owing to different energy relaxation processes, a characteristic of the electron-phonon coupling or the nature of the electron-hole pair at the intermediate state. The manifold dd excitations driven by the strong interaction between Ti-3d and O-2p electrons are noticeably rich, coexisting on both Ti and O sites. This sophisticated experiment can advance the perspective of nanocomposite TiO2 for various interactions of surface Ti3+ in applications of future devices.

The development of reliable and safe high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries is hindered by the structural instability of cathode materials during cycling, arising as a result of detrimental phase transformations occurring at high operating voltages alongside the loss of active materials induced by transition metal dissolution. Originating from the fundamental structure/function relation of battery materials, the authors purposefully perform crystallographic-site-specific structural engineering on electrode material structure, using the high-voltage LiNi0.5 Mn1.5 O4 (LNMO) cathode as a representative, which directly addresses the root source of structural instability of the Fd 3¯ m structure. By employing Sb as a dopant to modify the specific issue-involved 16c and 16d sites simultaneously, the authors successfully transform the detrimental two-phase reaction occurring at high-voltage into a preferential solid-solution reaction and significantly suppress the loss of Mn from the LNMO structure. The modified LNMO material delivers an impressive 99% of its theoretical specific capacity at 1 C, and maintains 87.6% and 72.4% of initial capacity after 1500 and 3000 cycles, respectively. The issue-tracing site-specific structural tailoring demonstrated for this material will facilitate the rapid development of high-energy-density materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The detection and monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) plays a vital role in the environmental, healthcare, farming, and industrial sectors. However, the development of NO2 gas sensors with simultaneously high sensitivity, reversibility, low detection limit, and excellent selectivity remains challenging. In this work, an ultrasensitive NO2 gas sensor with superb selectivity and reversibility is demonstrated based on α-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3). Nanoribbons of α-MoO3 are synthesized via vapor phase transport (VPT) and systematically characterized using a combination of advanced characterization probes. At an optimal operating temperature of 125 °C, the α-MoO3-based sensor shows a very high sensitivity toward NO2 with a detection limit as low as 24 ppb, while also exhibiting excellent selectivity and reversibility. Such impressive performance originates from the layered nature of the α-MoO3 nanoribbons as well as the hierarchical assembly of the nanoribbons as the sensing layer. The study demonstrates a facile sensing platform based on α-MoO3 for ultrasensitive and selective NO2 gas sensing.

The electrodeposition nature of copper on a gold electrode in a 4.8 pH CuSO4 solution was inquired using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, and thermal desorption spectroscopy techniques. Our results point out that the electrodeposition of copper prompts the formation of stable oxi-hydroxide species with a formal oxidation state Cu+ without the evidence of metallic copper formation (Cu0). Moreover, the subsequent anodic polarization of Cu2Oaq yields the formation of CuO, in the formal oxidation state Cu2+, which is dissolved at higher anodic potential. It was found that the dissolution process needs less charge than that required for the electrodeposition indicating a nonreversible process most likely due to concomitant water splitting and formation of protons during the electrodeposition.

Recent advances in synchrotron based x-ray spectroscopy enable materials scientists to emanate fingerprints on important materials properties, e.g., electronic, optical, structural, and magnetic properties, in real-time and under nearly real-world conditions. This characterization in combination with optimized materials synthesis routes and tailored morphological properties could contribute greatly to the advances in solid-state electronics and renewable energy technologies. In connection to this, such perspective reflects the current materials research in the space of emerging energy technologies, namely photocatalysis, with a focus on transition metal oxides, mainly on the Fe2O3- and TiO2-based materials.

An abscopal effect refers to distant tumor regression after localized irradiation. The mechanism is thought to be via local radiotherapy triggering the immune system which then attacks distant tumor sites. Only several cases of solid tumors with an abscopal effect have been reported in the past few decades, and whether an abscopal effect can cross the blood-brain barrier is still unknown. Herein, we present a female patient who was admitted due to unsteady gait and dyspnea. Chest X-ray (CXR) and chest CT showed a huge lung mass with left lung collapse and multiple liver masses. Brain MRI also showed multiple brain metastases. A bronchoscopic biopsy proved metastatic adenocarcinoma from colorectal cancer based on immunohistochemical staining. She therefore received 30 Gy (10 fractions) for the brain metastases; however, she refused to receive any systemic therapy for her lung mass and asked for hospice care. She was therefore transferred to a nursing home and was lost to follow-up. She returned 2 months later due to right pneumonia with fever and productive cough. Surprisingly, her left lung mass had markedly regressed even though she had not received any additional systemic anticancer therapy. This may be the first case of an abscopal effect after receiving whole brain irradiation for brain metastases.

The ruthenium carbon catalysts presented herein are able to activate both CO2 and H-2, exhibiting exceptional high activity for CO2 hydrogenation at low temperatures (160-200 degrees C) with 100% selectivity to methane, surpassing by far the most active Ru catalysts reported up to now. On the basis of catalytic studies and isotopic (CO)-C-13/(CO2)-C-12/H-2 experiments, the active sites responsible for this unprecedented activity can be associated with surface ruthenium carbide (RuC) species, which enable CO2 activation and transformation to methane via a direct CO2 hydrogenation mechanism. Black phosphorus (BP) is a desirable anode material for alkali metal ion storage owing to its high electronic/ionic conductivity and theoretical capacity. In-depth understanding of the redox reactions between BP and the alkali metal ions is key to reveal the potential and limitations of BP, and thus to guide the design of BP-based composites for high-performance alkali metal ion batteries. Comparative studies of the electrochemical reactions of Li+ , Na+ , and K+ with BP were performed. Ex situ X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculation reveal the lowest utilization of BP for K+ storage than for Na+ and Li+ , which is ascribed to the highest formation energy and the lowest ion diffusion coefficient of the final potassiation product K3 P, compared with Li3 P and Na3 P. As a result, restricting the formation of K3 P by limiting the discharge voltage achieves a gravimetric capacity of 1300 mAh g-1 which retains at 600 mAh g-1 after 50 cycles at 0.25 A g-1 .

In recent times, few-layer black phosphorus (BP) has attracted tremendous attention as a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries due to its particular two-dimensional structure, good electron conductivity, and high theoretical capacity. The main disadvantages of BP-based materials are the lower practical specific capacity of the BP-based composite than expectation because of the low P atom utilization and the structural fracture due to the large volume expansion that occurs during sodiation/desodiation cycles. In this work, we report a ternary composite comprising BP, graphite, and polyaniline (BP-G/PANI) with a BP mass content of ∼65 wt %. The ternary composite provides an optimized ion pathway (electrolyte → PANI → BP-G → BP), which reduces the charge transfer resistance of the electrode. Also, further ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the presence of graphite in the BP-G composite allows a deep sodiation of BP and also leads to a higher sodiation/desodiation reversibility. In addition, the uniformly coated PANI also restricts the huge volume expansion of the BP electrode through discharge/charge processes, which promise the stable cycling performance of BP-G/PANI. Thus, our composite shows a high reversible gravimetric capacity of 1530 mAh gcompo.-1 at 0.25 A g-1 and a capacity retention of 520 mAh gcompo.-1 after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 4 A g-1.
