Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ranks the first in incidence and mortality among malignant tumors in China. Molecular targeted therapies such as gefitinib, an oral inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase, have shown significant benefits in patients with advanced NSCLC. However, most patients have unsatisfactory outcomes due to the development of drug resistance, and there is an urgent need to better understand the pathways involved in the resistance mechanisms. In this study, we found that HMGB1 is highly expressed in drug-resistant cells and confers to gefitinib resistance in NSCLC cells via activating autophagy process. Gefitinib upregulates HMGB1 expression in time-dependent and dose-dependent manners in human NSCLC cells. RNA interference-mediated knockdown of HMGB1 reduces PC9GR cell viability, induces apoptosis, and partially restores gefitinib sensitivity. Mechanistic analyses indicate that elevated HMGB1 expression contributes to gefitinib resistance by inducing autophagy. Thus, our results suggest that HMGB1 is an autophagy regulator and plays a key role in gefitinib resistance of NSCLC.

We experimentally demonstrate the coherent random laser emission by combining CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots with hollow optical fiber. Through the localized surface plasmon resonance induced by Ag nanoparticles (NPs), well-distinguished discrete spikes are observed from the Ag modified hollow fiber loaded with CdSe/ZnS QDs solution. In addition, coherent random laser action with low threshold is also realized in the hollow optical fiber filled with high packing-density CdSe/ZnS QDs even if the Ag NPs is not introduced. The self-assembled clusters of CdSe/ZnS QDs serve as the optical gain media as well as the strong scattering centers. The angle measurement experiments show that the directional emission of random laser can be adjusted by using different pumping manners. This facile, inexpensive, low pump threshold random laser could be widely used in photonic devices and display imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bulletin board system (BBS) significantly changed the production and transmission of knowledge in China's information technology (IT). Launched in 1991, Chinese FidoNet (CFido) provided a virtual space for hobbyists to explore technology-for-fun and aggregated many future Chinese digital entrepreneurs, enabling them to experiment with business models and pursue open-source software with Chinese characters. CFido's short history (1991–1998) also encapsulates the fast-changing dynamic between knowledge and its social context. CFido participants first perceived the BBS as a utopian "pure land" where grassroots intellectuals could develop software and digital technologies, free from outside interests and interventions. Yet the beginning of government control of cyberspace, the boom of the IT industry and e-commerce, and the transition from the dial-up BBS to the Internet led the CFidoers to diverging positions about amateurs and ultimately brought CFido to an end. Tandem catalysis, capable of decoupling individual steps, provides a feasible way to build a high-efficiency CO2 electroconversion system for multicarbons (C2+). The construction of electrocatalytic materials is one of focusing issues. Herein, we fabricated a single atom involved multivalent oxide-derived Cu composite material and found it inclined to reconstruct into oxygen-deficient multiphase Cu based species hybridized with monatomic Ni on N doped C matrix. In this prototype, rapid CO generation and C–C coupling are successively achieved on NiN4 sites and surface amorphized Cu species with defects, resembling a micro-production line. In this way, the in situ formed tandem catalyst exhibited a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ∼ 78% for C2+ products along with satisfactory durability over 50 h. Particularly, the reconstruction-induced amorphous layer with abundant asymmetric sites should be favorable to improve the ethanol selectivity (FE: 63%), which is about 10 times higher than that of the non-tandem Cu-based contrast material. The random laser from sheared dye-doped polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (DDPDLC) is investigated. As the emission intensity weakens, the threshold of random laser from DDPDLC increases from 2.0 mJ/pulse to 4.0 mJ/pulse, and the degree of polarization (DOP) increases from 0.1 to 0.78, obviously when the shear distance increases from 0 mm to 4 mm. As the liquid crystal droplets are gradually oriented in the shear direction caused by alignment direction of polymer chain and anisotropy of droplet shape, the scattering intensity perpendicular to the shear direction gradually decreases and that parallel to the shear direction gradually increases. The anisotropic absorption of the laser dye also plays a certain role as the shear distance is 0 mm. The controllable intensity and polarization degree of random laser have a huge potential for sensing applications.
