Jones's (2000) celebrated book has inspired a generation of work devoted to understanding the causes and consequences of outsourcing. While much of this work has focused on the outsourcing versus domestic production decision of the firm, with labor cost‐saving as the key driver for outsourcing, we further explore how preference‐based outsourcing may arise in a dynamic world equilibrium. We address this problem in a North–South model in which the outsourcing decision depends not only on labor costs but also on information about local preferences that arise with outsourcing. As the South develops, demand for manufactured goods becomes more important, so identifying specific tastes of Southern consumers matters more. As a result, preference‐based outsourcing displaces cost‐saving outsourcing. Our quantitative analysis indicates that, as both agricultural and manufacturing technologies grow over time, the dynamic world equilibrium switches from the export regime to the cost‐saving outsourcing regime, and eventually to the preference‐based outsourcing regime. Providing customised services is one of the major approaches the service industry employs to maintain its customer base. Accordingly, this research investigates whether the effects of service quality attributes on customer satisfaction differ between first-time and revisiting customers in the restaurant industry. This research adopts the five gaps model between service quality performance and customer expectations. Based on the expectations-disconfirmation theory, we analysed the DINESERV framework to compare revisiting customers with first-time customers. Our results show no significant difference in the service constructs of empathy, assurance, and reliability. However, the satisfaction of first-time customers is influenced more by the responsiveness of front-line service staff, whereas revisiting customers care more about the dining atmosphere. Our findings could serve as a guideline for restaurants to serve their customers more effectively, as well as to differentiate and fine-tune their marketing strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astrocytes are extensively infected with HIV-1 in vivo and play a significant role in the development of HIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorders. Despite their extensive infection, little is known about how astrocytes become infected, since they lack cell surface CD4 expression. In the present study, we investigated the fate of HIV-1 upon infection of astrocytes. Astrocytes were found to bind and harbor virus followed by biphasic decay, with HIV-1 detectable out to 72 hours. HIV-1 was observed to associate with CD81-lined vesicle structures. shRNA silencing of CD81 resulted in less cell-associated virus but no loss of co-localization between HIV-1 and CD81. Astrocytes supported trans-infection of HIV-1 to T-cells without de novo virus production, and the virus-containing compartment required 37°C to form, and was trypsin-resistant. The CD81 compartment observed herein, has been shown in other cell types to be a relatively protective compartment. Within astrocytes, this compartment may be actively involved in virus entry and/or spread. The ability of astrocytes to transfer virus, without de novo viral synthesis suggests they are capable of sequestering and protecting virus and thus, they could potentially facilitate viral dissemination in the CNS. Protein microparticles have received attention as drug delivery systems because of their high protein stability and prolonged release in vivo. However, most current preparation processes introduce chemical crosslinkers, which often lead to protein inactivation and limit drug efficacy in delivery systems. In this study, we employed the well-known hexahistidine (His)-tag recombinant protein technology and a metal-triggerable collagen-mimetic peptide to enhance the binding strength between the protein and metal ion and fine-tuned the protein drug release. His-tagged proteins self-assembled to form microparticles (∼2 μm) upon zinc ion treatment and sustained protein drug release was achieved in physiological saline. The results also indicated that by adjusting the peptide concentration and N- and C-terminal hexahistidine-tags, protein release could be controlled. Moreover, no protein denaturation was observed. Background: Chronic inflammation and immune activation occur in both HIV infection and normal aging and are associated with inflammatory disease. However, the degree to which HIV influences age-related innate immune changes, and the biomarkers which best reflect them, remains unclear., Methods and Results: We measured established innate immune aging biomarkers in 309 individuals including 88 virologically suppressed (VS) and 52 viremic (viral load ≤ and >50 copies per milliliter, respectively) HIV-positive individuals. Levels of soluble (ie, CXCL10, soluble CD163, neopterin) and cellular (ie, proportions of inflammatory CD16 monocytes) biomarkers of monocyte activation were increased in HIV-positive individuals and were only partially ameliorated by viral suppression. Viremic and VS HIV-positive individuals show levels of age-related monocyte activation biomarkers that are similar to uninfected controls aged 12 and 4 years older, respectively. Viremic HIV infection was associated with an accelerated rate of change of some monocyte activation markers (eg, neopterin) with age, whereas in VS individuals, subsequent age-related changes occurred at a similar rate as in controls, albeit at a higher absolute level. We further identified CXCL10 as a robust soluble biomarker of monocyte activation, highlighting the potential utility of this chemokine as a prognostic marker., Implications: These findings may partially explain the increased prevalence of inflammatory age-related diseases in HIV-positive individuals and potentially indicate the pathological mechanisms underlying these diseases, which persist despite viral suppression.
