4. Electronic and optical properties of b-AsP quantum dots and quantum rings under the electric and magnetic fields

In this work, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of the b-AsP quantum dots(QDs) and quantum rings(QRs) with different edge types in the presence of an in-plane electric field and a perpendicular magnetic field utilizing the tight-binding method. Our calculations show that the electronic and optical properties of edge states largely depend on the edge types. By adjusting the intensity of the electric field or magnetic field, the probability density can be effectively tuned. In particular, under an in-plane electric field, novel edge states emerge in rhombus QDs and QRs with {\delta} atoms, and transitions happen between these novel edge states and bulk states in the conduction band region, which is illustrated by distinct and evenly separated peaks in the optical absorption spectra. This work might exploit a potential system to implement quantum state transfer among two-dimensional material quantum dots., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

5. Integrated Metasurface-based Wavelengths Division Demultiplexers

We present a design approach for realizing on-chip wavelength division demultiplexing (WDD) schemes by integrating all-dielectric metasurfaces of TiO2 nanorod arrays into a SiN waveguide. The designed metasurface locally modifies the effective refractive index of the SiN waveguide, creating an effective WDD that selectively passes a certain band of wavelengths into a specific output port. A set of representative 2-channel and 3-channel WDDs schemes were demonstrated for input TE00/TM00 modes and operating in different bands, showing the flexibility of our design approach. The proposed WDD schemes are compatible with visible to infrared wavelengths, photolithography-based fabrication, high efficiency with maximum transmission of 91%, and a small footprint at a few microns. Our design method paves the way for realizing several on-chip integrated devices for applications in optical data processing and biological sensing., Comment: The submitted manuscript includes 16 pages and 6 figures

6. Ultrafast photothermoelectric effect in Dirac semimetallic Cd3As2 revealed by terahertz emission

The thermoelectric effects of topological semimetals have attracted tremendous research interest because many topological semimetals are excellent thermoelectric materials and thermoelectricity serves as one of their most important potential applications. In this work, we reveal the transient photothermoelectric response of Dirac semimetallic Cd3As2, namely the photo-Seebeck effect and photo-Nernst effect, by studying the terahertz (THz) emission from the transient photocurrent induced by these effects. Our excitation polarization and power dependence confirm that the observed THz emission is due to photothermoelectric effect instead of other nonlinear optical effect. Furthermore, when a weak magnetic field (~0.4 T) is applied, the response clearly indicates an order of magnitude enhancement on transient photothermoelectric current generation compared to the photo-Seebeck effect. Such enhancement supports an ambipolar transport nature of the photo-Nernst current generation in Cd3As2. These results highlight the enhancement of thermoelectric performance can be achieved in topological Dirac semimetals based on the Nernst effect, and our transient studies pave the way for thermoelectric devices applicable for high field circumstance when nonequilibrium state matters. The large THz emission due to highly efficient photothermoelectric conversion is comparable to conventional semiconductors through optical rectification and photo-Dember effect.

7. Direct Light Orbital Angular Momentum Detection in Mid-Infrared based on Type-II Weyl Semimetal TaIrTe4

The capability of direct photocurrent detection of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has recently been realized with topological Weyl semimetal, but limited to near infrared wavelength range. The extension of direct OAM detection to midinfrared, a wavelength range that plays important role in a vast range of applications, such as autonomous driving, night vision and motion detection, is challenging and has not yet been realized. This is because most studies of photocurrent responses are not sensitive to the phase information and the photo response is usually very poor in the mid-infrared. In this study, we designed a photodetector based on Type-II Weyl semimetal tantalum iridium tellurides with designed electrode geometries for direct detection of the topological charge of OAM through orbital photogalvanic effect. Our results indicate helical phase gradient of light can be distinguished by a current winding around the optical beam axis with a magnitude proportional to its quantized OAM mode number. The topological enhanced response at mid-infrared of TaIrTe4 further help overcome the low responsivity issues and finally render the direct orbital angular momentum detection capability in mid-infrared. Our study enables on-chip integrated OAM detection, and thus OAM sensitive focal plane arrays in mid-infrared. Such capability triggers new route to explore applications of light carrying OAM, especially that it can crucially promote the performance of many mid-infrared imaging related applications, such as intricate target recognition and night vision.

9. Electric field induced injection and shift currents in zigzag graphene nanoribbons

We theoretically investigate the one-color injection currents and shift currents in zigzag graphene nanoribbons with applying a static electric field across the ribbon, which breaks the inversion symmetry to generate nonzero second order optical responses by dipole interaction. These two types of currents can be separately excited by specific light polarization, circularly polarized lights for injection currents and linearly polarized lights for shift currents. Based on a tight binding model formed by carbon 2p$_z$ orbitals, we numerically calculate the spectra of injection coefficients and shift conductivities, as well as their dependence on the static field strength and ribbon width. The spectra show many peaks associated with the optical transition between different subbands, and the positions and amplitudes of these peaks can be effectively controlled by the static electric field. By constructing a simple two band model, the static electric fields are found to modify the edge states in a nonperturbative way, and their associated optical transitions dominate the current generation at low photon energies. For typical parameters, such as a static field 10$^6$ V/m and light intensity 0.1 GW/cm$^2$, the magnitude of the injection and shift currents for a ribbon with width 5 nm can be as large as the order of 1 $\mu$A. Our results provide a physical basis for realizing passive optoelectronic devices based on graphene nanoribbons.

10. Chiral Phonon Activated Spin Seebeck Effect

Efficient generation of spin polarization is the central focus of spintronics. In magnetic materials, spin currents can arise from heat currents by the conventional spin Seebeck effect. Recently, chiral phonons with definite handedness and angular momenta have also produced profound impacts on multiple research fields. In this paper, starting with nonequilibrium distribution of chiral phonons under temperature gradient, we find a new spin selectivity effect - chiral phonon activated spin Seebeck (CPASS) effect, in chiral materials without magnetic order nor spin-orbit coupling. With both phonon-drag and band transport contributions, the CPASS coefficients are computed based on the Boltzmann transport theory. The spin accumulations by the CPASS effect quadratically increase with temperature gradient, and vary with the chemical potential modulation, thus enabling highly efficient and tunable spin generation. The CPASS effect provides a promising explanation on the chiral-induced spin selectivity effect and opportunities for designing advanced spintronic devices based on nonmagnetic chiral materials., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

13. Doping Induced Second Harmonic Generation in Centrosymmetric Graphene from Quadrupole Response

For centrosymmetric materials such as monolayer graphene, no optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is generally expected because it is forbidden under the electric-dipole approximation. Yet we observed a strong, doping induced SHG from graphene, with its highest strength comparable to the electric-dipole allowed SHG in non-centrosymmetric 2D materials. This novel SHG has the nature of an electric-quadrupole response, arising from the effective breaking of inversion symmetry by optical dressing with an in-plane photon wave vector. More remarkably, the SHG is widely tuned by carrier doping or chemical potential, being sharply enhanced at Fermi edge resonances, but vanishing at the charge neutral point that manifests the electron-hole symmetry of massless Dirac Fermions. The striking behavior in graphene, which should also arise in graphene-like Dirac materials, expands the scope of nonlinear optics, and holds the promise of novel optoelectronic and photonic applications., Comment: to appear in PRL

Materials with massless Dirac fermions can possess exceptionally strong and widely tunable optical nonlinearities. Experiments on graphene monolayer have indeed found very large third-order nonlinear responses, but the reported variation of the nonlinear optical coefficient by orders of magnitude is not yet understood. A large part of the difficulty is the lack of information on how doping or chemical potential affects the different nonlinear optical processes. Here we report the first experimental study, in corroboration with theory, on third harmonic generation (THG) and four-wave mixing (FWM) in graphene that has its chemical potential tuned by ion-gel gating. THG was seen to have enhanced by ~30 times when pristine graphene was heavily doped, while difference-frequency FWM appeared just the opposite. The latter was found to have a strong divergence toward degenerate FWM in undoped graphene, leading to a giant third-order nonlinearity. These truly amazing characteristics of graphene come from the possibility to gate-control the chemical potential, which selectively switches on and off one- and multi-photon resonant transitions that coherently contribute to the optical nonlinearity, and therefore can be utilized to develop graphene-based nonlinear optoelectronic devices., Comment: submitted for publication on August 14th, 2017

We experimentally demonstrate a negative Kerr nonlinearity for quasi-undoped graphene. Hereto, we introduce the method of chirped-pulse-pumped self-phase modulation and apply it to graphene-covered silicon waveguides at telecom wavelengths. The extracted Kerr-nonlinear index for graphene equals n2,gr = -10^(-13) m^2/W. Whereas the sign of n2,gr turns out to be negative in contrast to what has been assumed so far, its magnitude is in correspondence with that observed in earlier experiments. Graphene's negative Kerr nonlinearity strongly impacts how graphene should be exploited for enhancing the nonlinear response of photonic (integrated) devices exhibiting a positive nonlinearity. It also opens up the possibility of using graphene to annihilate unwanted nonlinear effects in such devices, to develop unexplored approaches for establishing Kerr processes, and to extend the scope of the "periodic poling" method often used for second-order nonlinearities towards third-order Kerr processes. Because of the generic nature of the chirped-pulse-pumped self-phase modulation method, it will allow fully characterizing the Kerr nonlinearity of essentially any novel (2D) material.

18. Super-regular femtosecond laser nanolithography based on dual-interface plasmons coupling

Advances in femtosecond laser-material interaction facilitate the extension of maskless optical processing to the high efficiency and deep-subwavelength scale. Here, a hybrid plasmon lithography technique has been demonstrated by irradiating near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses onto the Si material coated with thin Cr films in a vacuum chamber, and superior nanograting structures are found to deeply penetrate through the thin Cr film into the underlying Si substrate. In stark contrast to the common ripple structures formed on the Si surface, the Cr-layer mediated Si nanograting structures not only exhibit the spatially super-regular arrangements with a deep-subwavelength period of 355 nm but also present the nonsinusoidal sharp-edged groove geometry with a large depth-to-width aspect ratio of 2.1. Theoretical analyses and calculations reveal that the anomalous structure characterizations are physically ascribed to the excitation of dual-interface coupled plasmons in the thin metal layer, which possess the squeezed spatial wavelength and the periodic columnar intensity distributions. Moreover, the further deepening of periodic nanostructures into the Si substrate is also elucidated by the simulation of electric field enhancements at the bottom of shallow grooves under irradiation of subsequent laser pulses. In combination with a wet etching process, the Si nanograting structures can be modified into the smooth and narrow-mouthed V-profiles, whose optical measurements show a near omnidirectional antireflection especially in the visible range of 565–750 nm, which is expected for the design of advanced photonic devices.

19. Unusual photocarrier and coherent phonon dynamics behaviors of layered PdSe2 unveiled by ultrafast spectroscopy of the edge surface.

Layered materials exhibit different electronic and phonon properties along in-plane and out-of-plane directions; existing studies focus on their in-plane behaviors, and the influence of such anisotropies on the dynamics of photocarriers and phonons is unknown. Here, we fabricate layered PdSe
2 crystals with flat edge surfaces and compare the time-resolved ultrafast spectroscopies on their basal and edge surfaces. Pronounced differences in the transient reflection spectroscopies reveal the inconsistent photocarrier and phonon dynamics behaviors on the two surfaces: the slow hot carrier relaxation process is accelerated and the thermoelasticity-induced longitudinal coherent acoustic phonon oscillation completely vanishes on the edge surface, as compared with the basal surface. Theoretical analysis reveals that the inconsistent hot carrier dynamics originate from the anisotropic properties of low-energy phonons in PdSe2 , and the absence of phonon oscillation on the edge surface results from the wavevector-limited sensitivity of acoustic B1u mode. Moreover, polarization-dependent spectroscopies indicate the diverse optical anisotropies beyond the in-plane of PdSe2 . The thermoelectric effects of topological semimetals have attracted tremendous research interest because many topological semimetals are excellent thermoelectric materials and thermoelectricity serves as one of their most important potential applications. In this work, we reveal the transient photothermoelectric response of Dirac semimetallic Cd
3 As2 , namely the photo-Seebeck effect and photo-Nernst effect, by studying the terahertz (THz) emission from the transient photocurrent induced by these effects. Our excitation polarization and power dependence confirm that the observed THz emission is due to photothermoelectric effect instead of other nonlinear optical effect. Furthermore, when a weak magnetic field (~0.4 T) is applied, the response clearly indicates an order of magnitude enhancement on transient photothermoelectric current generation compared to the photo-Seebeck effect. Such enhancement supports an ambipolar transport nature of the photo-Nernst current generation in Cd3 As2 . These results highlight the enhancement of thermoelectric performance can be achieved in topological Dirac semimetals based on the Nernst effect, and our transient studies pave the way for thermoelectric devices applicable for high field circumstance when nonequilibrium state matters. The large THz emission due to highly efficient photothermoelectric conversion is comparable to conventional semiconductors through optical rectification and photo-Dember effect. Many topological semimetals are excellent thermoelectric materials, but previous studies were limited to steady-state properties. Here, the authors observe a transient thermoelectric response in Cd3 As2 by detecting the resulting THz emission, with an enhanced response when a small magnetic field is applied.
