Materials that are capable of extracting gold from complex sources, especially electronic waste (e-waste) with high efficiency are needed for gold resource sustainability and effective e-waste recycling. However, it remains challenging to achieve high extraction capacity to trace amount of gold, and precise selectivity to gold over a wide range of complex co-existing elements. Here we report a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) material that has an ultrahigh extraction capacity for trace amounts of gold (1,850 mg/g and 1,180 mg/g to 10 ppm and 1 ppm gold). The excellent gold extraction behavior is accounted to the graphene areas and oxidized regions of rGO. The graphene areas spontaneously reduce gold ions to metallic gold, and the oxidized regions provide a good dispersibility so that efficient adsorption and reduction of gold ions by the graphene area can be realized. The rGO is also highly selective to gold ions. By controlling the protonation process of the functional groups on the oxidized regions of rGO, it shows an exclusive gold extraction without adsorption of 14 co-existing elements seen in e-waste. These discoveries are further exploited in highly efficient, continuous gold recycling from e-waste with good scalability and economic viability, as exemplified by extracting gold from e-waste using a rGO membrane based flow-through process.

The use of highly active and robust catalysts is crucial for producing green hydrogen by water electrolysis as we strive to achieve global carbon neutrality. Noble metals like platinum are currently used in industry for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but suffer from scarcity, high price and unsatisfied performance and stability at large current density, restricting their large scale implementations. Here we report the synthesis of a new type of monolithic catalyst (MC) consisting of a metal disulfide (e.g., TaS2) catalyst vertically bonded to a conductive substrate of the same metal by strong covalent bonds. These features give the MC a mechanically robust and electrically near zero resistance interface, leading to an outstanding HER performance including rapid charge transfer and excellent durability, together with a low overpotential of 398 mV to achieve a current density of 2,000 mA cm-2 as required by industry. The Ta TaS2 MC has a negligible performance decay after 200 h operation at large current densities. Optical device is a key component in our lives and organic liquid crystals are nowadays widely used to reduce human imprint. However, this technology still suffers from relatively high costs, toxicity and other environmental impacts, and cannot fully meet the demand of future sustainable society. Here we describe an alternative approach to colour-tuneable optical devices, which is based on sustainable inorganic liquid crystals derived from two-dimensional mineral materials abundant in nature. The prototypical two-dimensional mineral of vermiculite is massively produced by a green method, possessing size-to-thickness ratios of >103, in-plane magnetisation of >10 emu g-1, and an optical bandgap of >3 eV. These characteristics endow two-dimensional vermiculite with sensitive magneto-birefringence response, which is several orders of magnitude larger than organic counterparts, as well as capability of broad-spectrum modulation. Water electrolysis is promising for industrial hydrogen production to achieve a sustainable and green hydrogen economy, but the high cost of the technology limits its market share. Developing efficient yet economic electrocatalysts is crucial to decrease the cost of electricity and electrolytic cell. Meanwhile, electrolysis in seawater electrolyte can further reduce feedstock cost. Here we synthesize a type of electrocatalyst where trace precious metals are strongly anchored on corrosion-resistive matrix. As an example, the produced Pt/Ni-Mo electrocatalyst only needs an overpotential of 113 mV to reach an ultrahigh current density of 2000 mA cm-2 in saline-alkaline electrolyte, standing as the best performance so far. It shows high activity and long durability in various electrolytes and under harsh conditions, including strong alkaline and simulated seawater electrolytes, and under elevated temperatures up to 80 degree Celsius). Two-dimensional (2D) materials have many promising applications, but their scalable production remains challenging. Herein, we develop a glue-assisted grinding exfoliation (GAGE) method in which the adhesive polymer acts as a glue to massively produce 2D materials with large lateral sizes, high quality, and high yield. Density functional theory simulation shows that the exfoliation mechanism involves the competition between the binding energy of selected polymers and the 2D materials which is larger than the exfoliation energy of the layered materials. Taking h-BN as an example, the GAGE produces 2D h-BN with an average lateral size of 2.18 {\mu}m and thickness of 3.91 nm. The method is also extended to produce various other 2D materials, including graphene, MoS2, Bi2O2Se, vermiculite, and montmorillonite. Two representative applications of thus-produced 2D materials have been demonstrated, including h-BN/polymer composites for insulating thermal conduction and MoS2 electrocatalysts for large-current-density hydrogen evolution, indicating the great potential of massively produced 2D materials., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

Collective behavior widely exists in nature, ranging from the macroscopic cloud of swallows to the microscopic cloud of colloidal particles. The behavior of an individual inside the collective is distinctive from its behavior alone, as it follows its neighbors. The introduction of such collective behavior in two-dimensional (2D) materials may offer new possibilities to achieve desired but unattained properties. Here, we report a highly sensitive magneto-optic effect and transmissive magneto-coloration via introducing collective behavior into magnetic 2D material dispersions. The increase of ionic strength in the dispersion enhances the collective behavior of colloidal particles, giving rise to a magneto-optic Cotton-Mouton coefficient up to 2700 T-2m-1 which is the highest value obtained so far, being three orders of magnitude larger than other known transparent media. We also reveal linearly dependence of magneto-coloration on the concentration and hydration radius of ions. Such linear dependence and the extremely large Cotton-Mouton coefficient cooperatively allow fabrication of giant magneto-birefringent devices for color-centered visual sensing., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

The non-Markov processes widely exist in thermodymanic processes, while it usually requires packing of many transistors and memories with great system complexity in traditional device architecture to minic such functions. Two-dimensional (2D) material-based resistive random access memory (RRAM) devices show potential for next-generation computing systems with much-reduced complexity. Here, we achieve the non-Markov chain in an individual RRAM device based on 2D mica with a vertical metal/mica/metal structure. We find that the internal potassium ions (K+) in 2D mica gradually move along the direction of the applied electric field, making the initially insulating mica conductive. The accumulation of K+ is tuned by electrical field, and the 2D-mica RRAM possesses both unipolar and bipolar memory windows, high on/off ratio, decent stability and repeatability.Importantly, the non-Markov chain algorithm is established for the first time in a single RRAM, in which the movement of K+ is dependent on the stimulated voltage as well as their past states. One-dimensional (1D) materials have attracted significant research interest due to their unique quantum confinement effects and edge-related properties. Atomically thin 1D nanoribbon is particularly interesting because it is a valuable platform with physical limits of both thickness and width. Here, we develop a catalyst-free growth method and achieves the growth of Bi2O2Se nanostructures with tunable dimensionality. Significantly, Bi2O2Se nanoribbons with thickness down to 0.65 nm, corresponding to monolayer, are successfully grown for the first time. Electrical and optoelectronic measurements show that Bi2O2Se nanoribbons possess decent performance in terms of mobility, on/off ratio, and photoresponsivity, suggesting their promising for devices. Doping is an effective way to modify the electronic property of two-dimensional (2D) materials and endow them with new functionalities. However, wide-range control of the substitutional doping concentration with large scale uniformity remains challenging in 2D materials. Here we report in-situ chemical vapor deposition growth of vanadium (V) doped monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with widely tunable doping concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 13.1 at%. The key to regulate the doping concentration lies in the use of appropriate V precursors with different doping abilities, which also generate a large-scale uniform doping effect. Artificial synaptic transistors were fabricated by using the heavily doped MoS2 as the channel material for the first time. Synaptic potentiation, depression and repetitive learning processes are mimicked by the gate-tunable channel conductance change in such transistors with abundant V atoms to trap/detrap electrons. Two-dimensional (2D) materials family with its many members and different properties has recently drawn great attention. Thanks to their atomic thickness and smooth surface, 2D materials can be constructed into heterostructures or homostructures in the fashion of out-of-plane perpendicular stacking or in-plane lateral stitching, resulting in unexpected physical and chemical properties and applications in many areas. In particular, 2D metal-semiconductor heterostructures or homostructures (MSHSs) which integrate 2D metals and 2D semiconductors, have shown great promise in future integrated electronics and energy-related applications. In this review, MSHSs with different structures and dimensionalities are first introduced, followed by several ways to prepare them. Their applications in electronics and optoelectronics, energy storage and conversion, and their use as platforms to exploit new physics are then discussed. CONSPECTUS: Two-dimensional (2D) compound materials are promising materials for use in electronics, optoelectronics, flexible devices, etc. because they are ultrathin and cover a wide range of properties. Among all methods to prepare 2D materials, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is promising because it produces materials with a high quality and reasonable cost. So far, much efforts have been made to produce 2D compound materials with large domain size, controllable number of layers, fast-growth rate, and high quality features, etc. However, due to the complicated growth mechanism like sublimation and diffusion processes of multiple precursors, maintaining the controllability, repeatability, and high quality of CVD grown 2D binary and ternary materials is still a big challenge, which prevents their widespread use. Here, taking 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as examples, we review current progress and highlight some promising growth strategies for the growth of 2D compound materials. The key technology issues which affect the CVD process, including non-metal precursor, metal precursor, substrate engineering, temperature, and gas flow, are discussed. Also, methods in improving the quality of CVD-grown 2D materials and current understanding on their growth mechanism are highlighted. Finally, challenges and opportunities in this field are proposed. Modulating electronic structure of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is important for many applications and doping is an effective way towards this goal, yet is challenging to control. Here we report the in-situ substitutional doping of niobium (Nb) into TMDCs with tunable concentrations during chemical vapour deposition. Taking monolayer WS2 as an example, doping Nb into its lattice leads to bandgap changes in the range 1.98 eV to 1.65 eV. Noteworthy, electrical transport measurements and density functional theory calculations show that the 4d electron orbitals of the Nb dopants contribute to the density of states of Nb-doped WS2 around the Fermi level, resulting in an n to p-type conversion. Nb-doping also reduces the energy barrier of hydrogen absorption in WS2, leading to an improved electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Motivated by the fact that septuple-atomic-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ can be structurally viewed as the combination of double-atomic-layer MnTe intercalating into quintuple-atomic-layer Bi$_2$Te$_3$, we present a general approach of constructing twelve septuple-atomic-layer $\alpha_i$- and $\beta_i$-$MA_2Z_4$ monolayer family (\emph{i} = 1 to 6) by intercalating MoS$_2$-type $MZ$$_2$ monolayer into InSe-type A$_2$Z$_2$ monolayer. Besides reproducing the experimentally synthesized $\alpha_1$-MoSi$_2$N$_4$, $\alpha_1$-WSi$_2$N$_4$ and $\beta_5$-MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ monolayer materials, another 66 thermodynamically and dynamically stable $MA_2Z_4$ were predicted, which span a wide range of properties upon the number of valence electrons (VEC). $MA_2Z_4$ with the rules of 32 or 34 VEC are mostly semiconductors with direct or indirect band gap and, however, with 33 VEC are generally metal, half-metal ferromagnetism, or spin-gapless semiconductor upon whether or not an unpaired electron is spin polarized. The high-throughput scalable production of cheap, efficient and durable electrocatalysts that work well at high current densities demanded by industry is a great challenge for the large-scale implementation of electrochemical technologies. Here we report the production of a 2D MoS2-based ink-type electrocatalyst by a scalable top-down exfoliation technique followed by a simple heat treatment. The catalyst shows a high current density of 1000 mA cm^-2 at an overpotential of 454 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) without the need of iR correction, as well as good stability over 24 hours. Using the same method, we have, for the first time, produced a cheap MoS2 mineral-based catalyst and found that it had an excellent performance for high-current-density HER. Noteworthy, production rate of this MoS2-based catalyst is one to two orders of magnitude higher than those previously reported. In addition, the price of the MoS2 mineral is five orders of magnitude lower than commercial Pt catalysts, making the MoS2 mineral-based catalyst cheap, and the ink-type catalyst dispersions can be easily integrated with other technologies for large-scale catalyst electrode preparation. These advantages indicate the huge potentials of this method and mineral-based cheap and abundant natural resources as catalysts in the electrochemical technologies., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures
