Smads, part of signaling cascades that represent downstream pathways of the TGF-β super family proteins, are pleiotropic cytokines with important role in mediating cell proliferation, homeostasis, differentiation, apoptosis and immune response. However, the specific functions of Smads remain unknown in crustaceans. In the present study, the drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic protein gene 1 (Smad1) was firstly identified and characterized from the Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus clarkii. The obtained cDNA sequence of pcSmad1was 2, 503 bp long with a 1, 488 bp open reading fame, which encoded a putative protein of 496 amino acids. Furthermore, pcSmad1 responded to both Aeromonas hydrophila and WSSV challenge, suggesting the involvement of pcSmad1 in innate immune responses. Knockdown of pcSmad1 in vivo dramatically increased the expressions of NF-κB signaling genes and anti-lipopolysaccharide factor genes. Additionally, overexpression of pcSmad1 in HEK293T cells could markedly activate NF-κB signaling. Taken together, these results indicated that pcSmad1 played an immune-regulatory role in crayfish's innate immunity, which may provide a better understanding of TGF-β superfamily members in crustacean.

FGFRs involved multiple physiological processes, such as endocrine homeostasis, wound repair, and cellular behaviors including proliferation, differentiation and survival. In the present study, the homologs of fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) were identified and characterized from the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii for the first time. The full-length cDNAs of pcFGFR4 were 2878 bp with 2451 bp open reading frame (ORF), respectively. The deduced pcFGFR4 protein contained an immunoglobulin, two immunoglobulin C-2 Type, a transmembrane region and a catalytic domain. Real-time PCR analysis showed that pcFGFR4 were highly expressed in muscle and hemocyte. Moreover, the expression levels of pcFGFR4 in the hepatopancreas and hemocyte were positively stimulated after challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila and WSSV, implying the involvement of pcFGFR4 against bacterial and viral infections in innate immune responses. While pcFGFR4 were silenced in vivo, the expression levels of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) genes (pcALF1-5,8 and pcCrustin1-2) and NF-κB signaling components (pcDrosal and pcRelish) were significantly reduced. Additionally, NF-κB signaling could be markedly activated by overexpression of pcFGFR4 in HEK293T cells. Finally, our results indicated that pcFGFR4 regulated crayfish's innate immunity by modulating NF-κB signaling. These findings may provide new insights into pcFGFR4-mediated signaling cascades in crustaceans and provide a better understanding of crustacean innate immune system.

Interleukin-1 receptor associated kinases (IRAK) is the most important downstream kinases of TLRs/IL-1R signaling pathway for signal transduction and activation of inflammatory response against pathogen infections. However, the molecular identification and function characterization of IRAK2 homologs in lower vertebrate remains obscure. In this study, three IRAK2 genes (AdIRAK2a, AdIRAKb and AdIRAK2c) and their respective transcripts were identified from the Chinese giant salamander Andrias davidianus. This is the first evidence that three different IRAK2 genes exist in an ancient amphibian species, which has never been reported in other vertebrates. The complete open reading frames (ORFs) of AdIRAK2a, AdIRAK2b and AdIRAK2c were 2112 bp, 1917 bp and 816 bp encoding deduced proteins of 703 amino acids (aa), 628 aa and 271 aa, respectively. All three AdIRAK2 proteins contained two predicted conserved functional domains, including a death domain (DD) and a serine/threonine protein kinases domain (KD). Phylogenetic analysis showed that the three AdIRAK2s clustered together with other known IRAK2 of vertebrates. The three AdIRAK2s were ubiquitously expressed in all tested tissues with a similar tissues distribution pattern. After challenge of Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila), Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus), giant salamander iridovirus (GSIV, belonging to the genus Ranavirus in the family Iridoviridae) and polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)), the expression levels of all AdIRAK2s in blood were significantly altered, however, they exhibited distinct response patterns. Moreover, the results of over-expression and RNAi of AdIRAK2s implied the involvement of AdIRAK2s in triggering NF-κB-mediated signaling pathways and inflammatory responses. This study might provide a better understanding of the presence and immune regulation function of IRAK2 in amphibians and even in vertebrates.

Air exposure stress may result in oxidative damage and ultimately disease or death in crustaceans. Using the Procambarus clarkia, one of the main commercial aquaculture species in China, as a study model, the molecular mechanism including histopathological changes, antioxidant capacity and immunity response under the air exposure stress were firstly evaluated. Results showed that the surfaces of gill were wrinkled while the morphologies of the nuclei and mitochondria in the hepatopancreas were altered after 48 h of air exposure stress, and the damage of mitochondria was more serious after additional bacterial infection. Moreover, the activity of antioxidant enzymes increased at first and then decreased along with increasement of air exposure time. The concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) in hepatopancreas was significantly increased under the air exposure stress, while the bacterial infection further aggravated such oxidative damage. The transcriptome analysis exhibited that the stress- and immunity-related genes in hepatopancreas altered when response to the air exposure stress. This study could help uncover the mechanisms of aerial exposure stress responses in Procambarus clarkii.

This brief presents a control design for a walking-assistant robot in a complex indoor environment, such that it can assist a walking-impaired person to walk and avoid unexpected obstacles. In this design, the robot motion is a resultant of autonomous navigation and compliant motion control. The compliance motion controller allows the robot to possess passive behavior following the motion intent of the user, while the autonomous guidance gives safe navigation of the robot without colliding with any obstacles. A shared-control approach is suggested to combine the passive compliant behavior and safe guidance of the robot. When a user exerts force to the robot, the mobile platform responds to adjust the speed in compliance with the user movement. On the other hand, the autonomous navigation controller is designed to provide collision-free guidance. Using the developed shared controller, outputs of the compliance motion controller and autonomous navigation controller are fused to generate appropriate motion for the robot. In this manner, passive behavior allows the walking-assistant robot to adapt to a user’s motion intent and move in compliance with user. Meanwhile, the active guidance adjusts the linear velocity and the direction of the robot in real time in response to the environmental data received from the on-board laser scanner. The developed algorithms have been implemented on a self-constructed walking-assistant robot. Experimental results validate the proposed design and demonstrate that the robot can actively avoid unexpected obstacles while move passively following the user to the destination.

This study uses analyst recommendations and three ambiguity proxies, namely ambiguity in fundamentals, ambiguity in information and market ambiguity, to examine market reaction to recommendation changes in the Taiwanese stock market. The authors find that analysts’ recommendation changes have positive effects on subsequent buy-and-hold abnormal returns when market ambiguity is moderate. When ambiguity in fundamentals is low, recommendation changes have a positive influence on smaller firms. The effect of ambiguity in information on stock returns is associated with market ambiguity; market ambiguity is negatively associated with abnormal returns for firms with moderate ambiguity in fundamentals. Investors in a small firm rely more on analyst recommendations.

Decoding high code rate Turbo codes by their reciprocal dual trellis has been shown to be potentially beneficial in implementation due to the simpler trellis structures. However, reciprocal dual trellis decoders' complexity grows significantly when the code rate is less than 1/2. Further, designing a multicode rate reciprocal dual trellis decoder is even more challenging if periodical puncturing patterns is not always available. In this paper, a radix-4 hybrid-trellis LTE-A turbo decoder with a controller switching between the conventional trellis and the reciprocal dual trellis is presented. To accommodate all the rates defined in LTE-A, a zero patching scheme is proposed to create the periodical puncturing patterns required by the reciprocal dual trellis decoding. The implementation of the proposed decoder supports all the code rates, from 1/3 to 0.95, and all the 188 block lengths. Fabricated in TSMC TN28HPM process, the post-layout simulations show the proposed decoder could achieve 333Mbps at 6 iterations under 263MHz operating frequency. The core area is 1.08 mm2, and the decoder draws 295.57 mW of power with energy efficiency of 0.148(nJ/bit/iter).

Runner system plays a very important role in injection molding process. A quality runner design is helpful in improving product qualities and saving material. However, traditional cold runner systems have certain inherent issues. Moreover, poor product cosmetics are commonly seen with the use of traditional cold runners. As a result, hot runner technology has been widely applied. On the other hand, It has been one of the green molding solutions for material/energy saving and clean environments. But the mechanism behind the hot runner system is too complicated to be fully understood. There exist some critical issues currently. As a result, the simulation technolgy is highly needed to examine hot runner designs before the real manufacturing. Through simulation analyses, designers and manufafctuers are able to catch the potential issues on their hot runner systems and revise their designs. Hot runner simulation technology helps with the investigations into the behavior in hot runner system. In this paper, a true 3D numerical method is proposed and applied to investigate the temperature behavior in a real hot runner system for PC material. The experiment is conducted and the simulating result is compared with that from the experiment for the validation purpose.

A proper surface treatment, such as O2 plasma, helps to improve particle removal efficiency (PRE) because of the formation of hydrogen bonding between particles, water and the mask surface after treatment. The effectiveness of surface treatments cannot be determined only by the static wettability after processes. More key indexes should be considered. In this paper, we report our findings on the relationship between surface treatments on photomasks and the resulting wettability. In addition, added defects after the treatment and the cleaning process were inspected with a 193- nm KLA inspector on 193-nm immersion and EUV photomasks, which consist of SiO 2 , MoSi, Cr, Ta-based absorber and Ru. Based on our work, three indexes can be built for determining the effectiveness of surface treatments. The first is to check whether the surface becomes super-hydrophilic after treatment. The second is to determine the efficiency of surface treatments on enhancing wettability. The last is to quantify the added watermark count after the surface treatment and the cleaning process. With a proper surface treatment, watermarks can be greatly eased. These three indexes can quickly determine possible effective methods for treating the surfaces of different materials.

The Poincare plot of RR intervals (RRI) is obtained by plotting RRIn+1 against RRIn. The Pearson correlation coefficient (ρRRI), slope (SRRI), Y-intercept (YRRI), standard deviation of instantaneous beat-to-beat RRI variability (SD1RR), and standard deviation of continuous long-term RRI variability (SD2RR) can be defined to characterize the plot. Similarly, the Poincare plot of autocorrelation function (ACF) of RRI can be obtained by plotting ACFk+1 against ACFk. The corresponding Pearson correlation coefficient (ρACF), slope (SACF), Y-intercept (YACF), SD1ACF, and SD2ACF can be defined similarly to characterize the plot. By comparing the indices of Poincare plots of RRI and ACF between patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and patients with patent coronary artery (PCA), we found that the ρACF and SACF were significantly larger, whereas the RMSSDACF/SDACF and SD1ACF/SD2ACF were significantly smaller in AMI patients. The ρACF and SACF correlated significantly and negatively with normalized high-frequency power (nHFP), and significantly and positively with normalized very low-frequency power (nVLFP) of heart rate variability in both groups of patients. On the contrary, the RMSSDACF/SDACF and SD1ACF/SD2ACF correlated significantly and positively with nHFP, and significantly and negatively with nVLFP and low-/high-frequency power ratio (LHR) in both groups of patients. We concluded that the ρACF, SACF, RMSSDACF/SDACF, and SD1ACF/SD2ACF, among many other indices of ACF Poincare plot, can be used to differentiate between patients with AMI and patients with PCA, and that the increase in ρACF and SACF and the decrease in RMSSDACF/SDACF and SD1ACF/SD2ACF suggest an increased sympathetic and decreased vagal modulations in both groups of patients.

A hot gas is used for heating the cavity surface of a mold. Different mold gap sizes were designed. The mold surface temperature was heated to above the glass transition temperature of the plastic material, and the mold then closed for melt filling. The cavity surface can be heated to 130°C to assist the melt filling of the microfeatures. Results show that hot gas heating can improve the filling process and achieve 91% of the high aspect ratio microgrooves (about 640.38 μm of the maximum of 700 μm). The mold gap size strongly affects the heating speed and heating uniformity. Without surface preheating, the center rib is the highest. When the heating target temperature is 90°C or 100°C, the three microribs have a good uniformity of height. However, when the target temperature exceeds 100°C, the left side rib is higher than the other ribs.

This paper presents a multiple code-rate turbo decoder using the reciprocal dual trellis to improve the hardware efficiency. For a convolutional code with code rate k/(k+1), its corresponding reciprocal dual code with rate 1/(k+1) has smaller codeword space than the original code while k > 1, leading to a simplified trellis of the high code-rate code. The proposed decoder architecture can decode code rate k/(k+1) constituent convolutional codes for k=1, 2, 4, 8, and 16. Moreover, two parallel soft-in/soft-out (SISO) decoders are exploited in our turbo decoder by using the quadratic permutation polynomial (QPP) interleaver to improve the decoding speed. After fabricated in 1P9M CMOS 40 nm process, the proposed decoder with 1.27 mm2 core area can achieve 535 Mbps throughput at 8/9 code rate, and the energy efficiency is 0.068 nJ/bit/iteration at 0.9 V.

The current ways to determine construction material quantities: calculating manually or using evaluation computer software, are time consuming and lack of accuracy. This study proposes an automatic calculation system to compute construction material quantities using a three dimensional architecture model based on CAD image files. The proposed system reduces the errors produced by manual input, increases the accuracy of calculated quantities, and reduces the calculation time. A comparison of the manually calculated quantities and those calculated by the proposed system confirms the accuracy of the proposed system.

To increase channel efficiency for high throughput systems, the high code-rate schemes are usually required. However, conventional turbo decoders in high code-rate usually apply high radix trellis structure, and the complexity of the trellis increases exponentially according to the code-rate. In this paper, the reciprocal dual trellis is applied to reduce the trellis complexity and a multiple code-rate turbo decoder is proposed. A sign magnitude representation is also introduced to lower the hardware complexity. The puncturing methodology is applied to WCDMA system as a case study of high code-rate turbo codes, and the investigated code-rates are 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, and 4/5. The simulation results are also shown in this paper. Fabricated with CMOS 90nm process, the proposed decoder containing 370K logic gates and 58kb storage units can achieve 101Mb/s with 80mW at code-rate 4/5.

This paper presents a novel compliant motion controller design for an omni-directional mobile robot. In this design, an external force observer is developed based on measuring motor current and speed without using an expensive force/torque sensor. The mobile robot has a handrail to assist the elderly to walk safely and stably. In this application, adaptive motion compliance is required in accordance with the applied force of the user. Practical experimental results show that the compliance of the walking helper can be adjusted by setting dynamic coefficients of the overall dynamical system. It was demonstrated that the external force observer successfully detected the pushing as well as pulling force of a user on the handrail. The velocity of the omni-directional walking helper is adjusted according to the inferred motion intent.
