Introduction Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, causes the outbreaks of Latin America in 2015 - 2016, with the incidence of neurological complications. Sunitinib malate, an orally bioavailable malate salt of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is suggested as a broad-spectrum antiviral agent against emerging viruses like severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2. Materials and Methods This study investigated the antiviral efficacy and antiviral mechanisms of sunitinib malate against ZIKV infection using cytopathic effect reduction, virus yield, and time-of-addition assays. Results Sunitinib malate concentration-dependently reduced ZIKV-induced cytopathic effect, the expression of viral proteins, and ZIKV yield in supernatant with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 0.015 μM, and the selectivity index of greater than 100 against ZIKV infection, respectively. Sunitinib malate had multiple antiviral actions during entry and post-entry stages of ZIKV replication. Sunitinib malate treatment at entry stage significantly reduced the levels of ZIKV RNA replication with the reduction of (+) RNA to (-) RNA ratio and the production of new intracellular infectious particles in infected cells. The treatment at post-entry stage caused a concentration-dependent increase in the levels of ZIKV (+) RNA and (-) RNA in infected cells, along with enlarging the ratio of (+) RNA to (-) RNA, but caused a pointed increase in the titer of intracellular infectious particles by 0.01 and 0.1 μM, and a substantial decrease in the titer of intracellular infectious particles by 1 μM. Conclusion The study discovered the antiviral actions of sunitinib malate against ZIKV infection, demonstrating a repurposed, host-targeted approach to identify potential antiviral drugs for treating emerging and global viral diseases.

The quaternary selenide Ba4GeSb2Se11 was prepared by a high-temperature solid state reaction method. Ba4GeSb2Se11 crystallizes in an acentric orthorhombic space group Cmc21 with the lattice constants a = 9.370(11) A, b = 25.850(0) A, and c = 8.798(10) A. The compound is composed of a [SbSe3]3- trigonal pyramid, [GeSbSe5]3- dimers, V-shaped Se32-, and the adjacent Ba2+ ions. It has indirect band gap of 1.35 eV and exhibits a second harmonic generation intensity of about 0.2 times that of the benchmark compound AgGaS2 at the same particle size. Interestingly, theoretical analyses show that the central Se atom of Se32- has the largest contribution (8.1%) to d31 compared to that of other Se atoms, which may be due to its easy swing in the a-axis direction.

Two-photon entangled generation is used to produce an entangled photon source which is a key and core element concerning the technology applications of quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum precision measurement. In this work, we have deduced the formulas of dynamic susceptibility and phase-matching angle of two-photon entangled generation in nonlinear optical crystals. The formulas are employed to compute the susceptibilities and phase-matching angles of these optical processes for uniaxial and biaxial crystals. The susceptibility magnitude and phase-matching condition of two-photon entangled generation affect the performance of the source. The calculated results by these formulas are employed to study properties and estimate the performance of an entangled photon source. In this way, we discuss the phase matching among waves and working wavelength in an entangled source that affects the efficiency of satellite communication with the ground during the day and night.

Dengue virus (DENV) is one of the most geographically distributed mosquito-borne flaviviruses, like Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and Zika virus (ZIKV). Cis-3-O-p-hydroxycinnamoyl ursolic acid (HCUA), a triterpenoid compound, was purified from Elaeagnus oldhamii Maxim. This traditional medicinal plant has been used for treating rheumatoid arthritis and lung disorders as well as for its anti-inflammation and anticancer activities. This study aimed to investigate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic-inducing activities of HCUA in oral cancer cells. HCUA exhibited anti-proliferative activity in oral cancer cell lines (Ca9-22 and SAS cells), but not in normal oral fibroblasts. The inhibitory concentration of HCUA that resulted in 50% viability was 24.0 µM and 17.8 µM for Ca9-22 and SAS cells, respectively. Moreover, HCUA increased the number of cells in the sub-G1 arrest phase and apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner in both oral cancer cell lines, but not in normal oral fibroblasts. Importantly, HCUA induced p53-mediated transcriptional regulation of pro-apoptotic proteins (Bax, Bak, Bim, Noxa, and PUMA), which are associated with mitochondrial apoptosis in oral cancer cells via the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. HCUA triggered the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) that was ascertained to be involved in HCUA-induced apoptosis by the ROS inhibitors YCG063 and N-acetyl-L-cysteine. As a result, HCUA had potential antitumor activity to oral cancer cells through eliciting ROS-dependent and p53-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis. Overall, HCUA could be applicable for the development of anticancer agents against human oral cancer.

A new non-centrosymmetric (NCS) polar sulfide PbGa2GeS6 has been synthesized by a self-fluxing method at a relatively low temperature of 550 °C with desirable properties for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Its structure is built by three types of infinite chains intersecting in three dimensions, where the NCS building units are tetragonal pyramids of PbS4 and tetrahedra of MS4 (M = Ga, Ga/Ge). Powder of PbGa2GeS6 exhibits phase-matchable (PM) second-order NLO activity with strong second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of 0.5× AgGaS2 at the particle size of 150–210 μm, high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of 5× AgGaS2, and a wide transmission range in infrared (IR) region (0.47–23 μm). First-principles calculations suggest that the macroscopic SHG response is originated from the cooperation of the lone pairs on Pb2+ and MS4 (M = Ga, Ga/Ge) tetrahedra. Strong room-temperature electroluminescence at 365 nm has been demonstrated from simple Au/AlN/ n -GaN metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) light emitting diodes, which do not contain p -doped material. Current-voltage and electroluminescence data indicate that an AlN insulating layer thickness of 10 nm results in optimized diode behavior and maximum ultraviolet emission: At lower thicknesses carriers tunnel easily through the barrier, whereas at greater thicknesses the forward resistivity is excessively high. A decrease in emission intensity was observed at high injection currents due to Fowler–Nordheim tunnelling. However the device efficiency was found to improve by a factor of 10 when the AlN layer and the metal contact layer were deposited without breaking vacuum, thereby preventing any contamination or oxidation of the AlN surface. Additionally, this MIS device showed clear resonant tunnelling characteristics which are correlated with the enhanced light emission intensity.

Furoquinolone and its derivatives exhibit antimicrobial, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. The present study investigated the anti-tumor activity of synthesized intermediates of furoquinolone in human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. The biological effects of the active compound ethyl 2-anilino-4-oxo-4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate (compound 131) were examined in HL-60 cells. The following properties were analyzed: Cell survival, cell cycle profile, caspase-3 activity, Bax and Bcl-2 expression, the amount of intracellular Ca2+, the number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the mitochondrial membrane potential. Compound 131 (50% cytotoxic concentration, 23.5 µM) significantly reduced the proliferation of HL-60 cells and was revealed to induce apoptosis in HL-60 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, this was associated with the activation of caspase-3, upregulation of Bax, an increase in intracellular Ca2+ and ROS production, and a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and Bcl-2 expression levels. Compound 131, a novel 4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate, induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells via the increase of intracellular Ca2+ and ROS to alter the mitochondrial membrane potential and the protein level of Bax and Bcl-2, as well as activating caspase-3. The results of the current study indicate that compound 131 may represent a promising compound for the development of anti-leukemia therapeutics.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, occasionally causes severe central nervous system disorders in the risk zone where more than 3 billion people reside. Our prior studies demonstrated antiviral potential of 4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate compound CW-33 (ethyl 2-(3′,5′-dimethylanilino)-4-oxo-4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate) and its derivative CW-33A ((ethyl 2-(2-fluoroanilino)-4-oxo-4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate) against JEV infection ((Int. J. Mol. Sci. 2016, 17: E1386; Sci. Rep. 2018, 8: 16595). This study synthesized six new CW-33 derivatives containing chloro, or bromo groups at the C-2, C-3, or C-4 of anilino ring of CW-33, and assessed the antiviral activity and mechanisms of these chloro- and bromo-anilino substituted derivatives. CW-33K, CW-33L and CW-33M had the bromo-substituents at the C-2, C-3, or C-4 of anilino ring of CW-33, respectively, showing the higher anti-JEV activity than CW-33 and other derivatives. CW-33K (ethyl 2-(2-bromoanilino)-4-oxo-4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carboxylate) exhibited the highest antiviral efficacy and therapeutic index. The IC50 value of CW-33K was less than 5 μM for reducing JEV-induced cytopathic effect, virus infectivity and virus yield. CW-33K significantly inhibited the JEV replication at the early and late stages, suppressing viral RNA synthesis and intracellular JEV particle production. The study demonstrated that the CW-33 derivative with a bromo substitution at the C-2 anilino ring improved the antiviral activity JEV, providing the structure-antiviral activity relationship for the development of anti-JEV agents.

Summary Background Treatments for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) after failure of platinum-based chemotherapy are limited. We assessed safety and activity of nivolumab and nivolumab plus ipilimumab in patients with SCLC who progressed after one or more previous regimens. Methods The SCLC cohort of this phase 1/2 multicentre, multi-arm, open-label trial was conducted at 23 sites (academic centres and hospitals) in six countries. Eligible patients were 18 years of age or older, had limited-stage or extensive-stage SCLC, and had disease progression after at least one previous platinum-containing regimen. Patients received nivolumab (3 mg/kg bodyweight intravenously) every 2 weeks (given until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity), or nivolumab plus ipilimumab (1 mg/kg plus 1 mg/kg, 1 mg/kg plus 3 mg/kg, or 3 mg/kg plus 1 mg/kg, intravenously) every 3 weeks for four cycles, followed by nivolumab 3 mg/kg every 2 weeks. Patients were either assigned to nivolumab monotherapy or assessed in a dose-escalating safety phase for the nivolumab/ipilimumab combination beginning at nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg. Depending on tolerability, patients were then assigned to nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg or nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg. The primary endpoint was objective response by investigator assessment. All analyses included patients who were enrolled at least 90 days before database lock. This trial is ongoing; here, we report an interim analysis of the SCLC cohort. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01928394. Findings Between Nov 18, 2013, and July 28, 2015, 216 patients were enrolled and treated (98 with nivolumab 3 mg/kg, three with nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg, 61 with nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg, and 54 with nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg). At database lock on Nov 6, 2015, median follow-up for patients continuing in the study (including those who had died or discontinued treatment) was 198·5 days (IQR 163·0–464·0) for nivolumab 3 mg/kg, 302 days (IQR not calculable) for nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg, 361·0 days (273·0–470·0) for nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg, and 260·5 days (248·0–288·0) for nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg. An objective response was achieved in ten (10%) of 98 patients receiving nivolumab 3 mg/kg, one (33%) of three patients receiving nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg, 14 (23%) of 61 receiving nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg, and ten (19%) of 54 receiving nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg. Grade 3 or 4 treatment-related adverse events occurred in 13 (13%) patients in the nivolumab 3 mg/kg cohort, 18 (30%) in the nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg cohort, and ten (19%) in the nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg cohort; the most commonly reported grade 3 or 4 treatment-related adverse events were increased lipase (none vs 5 [8%] vs none) and diarrhoea (none vs 3 [5%] vs 1 [2%]). No patients in the nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg cohort had a grade 3 or 4 treatment-related adverse event. Six (6%) patients in the nivolumab 3 mg/kg group, seven (11%) in the nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg group, and four (7%) in the nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg group discontinued treatment due to treatment-related adverse events. Two patients who received nivolumab 1 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 3 mg/kg died from treatment-related adverse events (myasthenia gravis and worsening of renal failure), and one patient who received nivolumab 3 mg/kg plus ipilimumab 1 mg/kg died from treatment-related pneumonitis. Interpretation Nivolumab monotherapy and nivolumab plus ipilimumab showed antitumour activity with durable responses and manageable safety profiles in previously treated patients with SCLC. These data suggest a potential new treatment approach for a population of patients with limited treatment options and support the evaluation of nivolumab and nivolumab plus ipilimumab in phase 3 randomised controlled trials in SCLC. Aeromonas peritonitis is a rare, but serious infection, as associated with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, peritonitis in chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, and intestinal perforation. Here, we reported a case of monomicrobial non-neutrocytic bacterascites caused by Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila). The patient, a 57-year-old man who had a history of alcoholic liver disease and chronic hepatitis C-related Child- Pugh class C liver cirrhosis, was admitted to our hospital with fever, dyspnea and a localized wound pain over left ankle. Ascitic fluid analysis demonstrated that ascitic polymorphonuclear cell count was 30 cells/ mm3. Empirical antimicrobial treatment with a combination of ceftriaxone and clindamycin were administered. However, the patient died due to fatal septic shock on Day 3. His blood and ascites cultures were positive for A. hydrophila. The case report presents the diagnosis, management, and literature review of Aeromonas monomicrobial non-neutrocytic bacterascites.

The compound of Ba 2 Sb 7 O 13 (OH) was synthesized by using hydrothermal method from starting reagents of Ba(OH) 2 ·8H 2 O, Sb 2 O 3 and KCl. The crystal structure of Ba 2 Sb 7 O 13 (OH) was determined and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. Ba 2 Sb 7 O 13 (OH) represents a novel two-dimensional layered structure which is composed of Sb V O 6 and Sb III O 4 polyhedra through sharing corner oxygen atoms. Two types of Sb cations with Sb 3+ in sphenoid SbO 4 polyhedra and Sb 5+ in octahedral SbO 6 fashion are mixed in the crystal structure. First-principles electronic structure calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT), as well as the optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy measurements, indicate that the compound belongs to an indirect band semiconductor with optical band gap of 2.7 eV.

Recently, a severe respiratory illness outbreak of HCoV-NL63 has been reported in a long-term care facility. Sambucus FormosanaNakai, a species of elderberry, is a traditional medicinal herb with anti-inflammatory and antiviral potential. The study investigated the antiviral activity of Sambucus FormosanaNakai stem ethanol extract and some phenolic acid constituents against HCoV-NL63. The extract was less cytotoxic and concentration-dependently increased anti-HCoV-NL63 activities, including cytopathicity, sub-G1 fraction, virus yield (IC50 = 1.17 μg/ml), plaque formation (IC50 = 4.67 μg/ml) and virus attachment (IC50 = 15.75 μg/ml). Among the phenolic acid constituents in Sambucus FormosanaNakai extract, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and gallic acid sustained the anti-HCoV-NL63 activity that was ranked in the following order of virus yield reduction: caffeic acid (IC50 = 3.54 μM) > chlorogenic acid (IC50 = 43.45 μM) > coumaric acid (IC50 = 71.48 μM). Caffeic acid significantly inhibited the replication of HCoV-NL63 in a cell-type independent manner, and specifically blocked virus attachment (IC50 = 8.1 μM). Therefore, the results revealed that Sambucus Formosana Nakai stem ethanol extract displayed the strong anti-HCoV-NL63 potential; caffeic acid could be the vital component with anti-HCoV-NL63 activity. The finding could be helpful for developing antivirals against HCoV-NL63.

A new noncentrosymmetric (NCS) ternary sulfide, Ba8Sn4S15, was synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pca21 (29), with unit cell parameters a = 28.727(5) A, b = 8.5220(14) A, c = 25.438(4) A, Z = 8, and V = 6227.5(18) A3. The major structure of Ba8Sn4S15 formed by isolated SnS4 tetrahedra and SnS3 pyramids features the zero-dimensional (0D) characteristic and shows the coexistence of divalent Sn(II) and tetravalent Sn(IV). The optical band gap of Ba8Sn4S15 is 2.31 eV with a wide transparent region of 0.73–25 μm. Importantly, the large dipole moment and the polarity enhancement of the SnS3 pyramid unit make Ba8Sn4S15 exhibit strong second harmonic generation (SHG) nonlinear optical response, which is about 10 times larger than that of the benchmark AgGaS2 in the particle size of 25–45 μm at the laser radiation wavelength of 2.05 μm with a non phase-matchable behavior. The calculated results based on the density functional theory are employed to simulate the nonlinear optical properties of a new compound of Ba7Sn5S15(BSS). The frequency (ω=eV/ħ) dependent SHG tensor components of the BSS are calculated from 0.0 to 2.0 eV energy range. The calculated components d31(20.3 pm/V) and d33(18.8 pm/V) are close to the experimental value of of 19.5 pm/V at a wavelength of 2.10 μm. The SHG conversion efficiency and the figure of merit of BSS material are about two fold as compared with those of AgGaS2material. The charge transfers within the (Sn2S3) and (SnS4) polyhedrons lead to the most contribution to SHG response, and the polarity superposition of the [Sn2S3]2-groups will strengthen the crystal polarity and result in a large SHG response in a BSS material.

A new strontium antimonate{sup III}, Sr{sub 5}Sb{sub 22}O{sub 38}, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the P2{sub 1}/n space group of the monoclinic system with a=11.739(9) A, b=12.014(10) A, c=16.412(13) A, β=91.460(8)°, V=2314.0(3) A{sup 3}. The crystal structure is built of seven trigonal–pyramidal SbO{sub 3} and four sphenoid SbO{sub 4} polyhedra which are connected through sharing corner-oxygen atoms to form the complex three-dimensional {sub ∞}{sup 3}[Sb{sub 22}O{sub 38}]{sup 10−} anionic network with two different intersectant tunnels along the [111-bar ] and [11-bar 1-bar ] directions accommodating the electric charge balanced Sr{sup 2+} cations. In this paper, to elucidate the hydrogen bond effect on the assembly behavior, we studied the assembly structures of two carboxylic substituted thiophene derivatives on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) by scanning tunneling microscopy. Here thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (TCA) and thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (TDA) were employed. TDA molecules spontaneously adsorb on the HOPG surface and self-organize into a two-dimensional (2D) assembly with well-defined structure. Two types of domain could be observed. Each TDA molecule appears as a round circle with two small faint dots and forms hydrogen bonds with neighbours. Besides monolayer structure, a bilayer structure of TDA adlayer on HOPG was also observed in this research. Remnant TDA molecules adsorb on the monolayer of TDA and bilayer structure is formed. In contrast to TDA, no ordered structure of TCA on HOPG can be observed. TCA molecules have high propensity to form dimers through H-bond between carboxylic groups. But TCA dimer is not stable enough for either adsorption or imaging. Our result provides a new example for understanding hydrogen effect on stabilizing and controlling two-dimensional assembly structure and is helpful for surface nanofabrication and development of electric nanodevices.

Summary Background Few effective treatments exist for patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma that has progressed after platinum-based chemotherapy. We assessed the activity and safety of nivolumab in patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma whose disease progressed after previous platinum-based chemotherapy. Methods In this phase 1/2, multicentre, open-label study, we enrolled patients (age ≥18 years) with urothelial carcinoma of the renal pelvis, ureter, bladder, or urethra at 16 sites in Finland, Germany, Spain, the UK, and the USA. Patients were not selected by PD-L1 expression, but tumour PD-L1 membrane expression was assessed retrospectively. Patients received nivolumab 3 mg/kg intravenously every 2 weeks until disease progression or treatment discontinuation because of unacceptable toxicity or other protocol-defined reasons, whichever occurred later. The primary endpoint was objective response by investigator assessment. All patients who received at least one dose of the study drug were included in the analyses. We report an interim analysis of this ongoing trial. CheckMate 032 is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01928394. Findings Between June 5, 2014, and April 24, 2015, 86 patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma were enrolled in the nivolumab monotherapy group and 78 received at least one dose of treatment. At data cutoff (March 24, 2016), the minimum follow-up was 9 months (median 15·2 months, IQR 12·9–16·8). A confirmed investigator-assessed objective response was achieved in 19 (24·4%, 95% CI 15·3–35·4) of 78 patients. Grade 3–4 treatment-related adverse events occurred in 17 (22%) of 78 patients; the most common were elevated lipase (four [5%]), elevated amylase (three [4%]), and fatigue, maculopapular rash, dyspnoea, decreased lymphocyte count, and decreased neutrophil count (two [3%] each). Serious adverse events were reported in 36 (46%) of 78 patients and eight (10%) had a serious adverse event judged to be treatment related. Two (3%) of 78 patients discontinued because of treatment-related adverse events (grade 4 pneumonitis and grade 4 thrombocytopenia) and subsequently died. Interpretation Nivolumab monotherapy was associated with a substantial and durable clinical response and a manageable safety profile in previously treated patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma. A subclavian artery-esophageal fistula usually occurs on the right side of an aberrant subclavian artery. It also rarely appears in the site between a non-aberrant subclavian artery and the esophagus due to the ingestion of a foreign body. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the case of a subclavian artery-esophageal fistula is rare but often fatal. Here, we report on a 62-year-old male patient with a left subclavian arteryesophageal fistula complicated by hemorrhagic shock. He swallowed a foreign body at a birthday party. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy indicated a paper star lodged at 20 cm from the incisors, inducing a kissing esophageal ulcer around the esophageal sphincter. One month later, he suffered an unusually strong episode of hematemesis. Subsequently, a computed tomography angiography was performed and demonstrated a left subclavian artery-esophageal fistula. Finally, the fistula induced by the ingestion of a paper star was successfully treated by endovascular stent grafting.

We synthesized monodisperse Pd nanocrystals with exposed (111) and (100) facets through preferentially oriented facet growth technology. We then supported them on α-Al2O3 as catalysts for application in CO oxidative coupling to dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and find, for the first time, that the (111) facets of Pd nanocrystals are active planes for CO oxidative coupling to DMO. This conclusion is based on experiment results, reaction mechanism, and density functional theory calculation. Directed by this shape effect, a high-performance and long-lived nanocatalyst with much lower Pd load for CO oxidative coupling to DMO was successfully prepared by a new wet impregnation–solution chemical reduction method, which can well control the exposure of (111) facets and sizes of Pd nanocrystals.

Three new ternary Ba-Sn-S system compounds, acentric Ba(7)Sn(5)S(15), centric BaSn(2)S(5), and centric Ba(6)Sn(7)S(20) have been designed and synthesized by a conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction method using the evacuated silica tubes. The crystal structure of Ba(7)Sn(5)S(15) shows the coexistence of a SnS(4) tetrahedral and a Sn(2)S(3) trigonal bipyramid. Importantly, the larger dipole moment of the [Sn(2)S(3)](2-) trigonal bipyramid group and the polarity enhancement of the bipyramidal arrangements result in a strong SHG effect at 2.05 μm, which is 10 times of the SHG intensity of the benchmark AgGaS(2) with the particle size of 30-46 μm and twice as much as that with the particle size of 150-212 μm. Evidently, the acentric Ba(7)Sn(5)S(15) is a novel IR NLO crystal material with a wide mid-IR window and a strong SHG effect, which is the first reported among the Ba-Sn-S ternary system. Moreover, Ba(7)Sn(5)S(15) can achieve type-I phase-matching that can be used for practical applications. In the centric BaSn(2)S(5,) all Sn atoms are coordinated by five S atoms to form novel SnS(5) trigonal bipyramid polyhedrons. In the other centric Ba(6)Sn(7)S(20), there is the coexistence of the two coordination patterns with a SnS(5) trigonal bipyramid and SnS(4) tetrahedral polyhedrons, featuring a special crystal structure in the Ba-Sn-S system.
