Abstracts: Rationale: Diesel engine exhaust (DEE) is associated with the development and exacerbation of asthma. Studies have shown that DEE can aggravate allergen-induced eosinophilic inflammation in lung. However, it remains not clear that whether DEE alone could initiate non-allergic eosinophilic inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) through innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) pathway. Objective: This study aims to investigate the airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness and its relationship with ILC after DEE exposure. Method: Non-sensitized BALB/c mice were exposed in the chamber of diesel exhaust or filtered air for 2, 4, and 6 weeks (4 h/day, 6 days/week). Anti-CD4 mAb or anti-Thy1.2 mAb was administered by intraperitoneal injection to inhibit CD4+T or ILCs respectively. AHR、airway inflammation and ILCs were assessed. Result: DEE exposure induced significantly elevated level of neutrophils, eosinophils, collagen content at 4, 6 weeks. Importantly, the airway AHR was only significant in the 4weeks-DEE exposure group. No difference of the functional proportions of Th2 cells was found between exposure group and control group. The proportions of IL-5+ILC2, IL-17+ILC significantly increased in 2, 4weeks-DEE exposure group. After depletion of CD4+T cells, both the proportion of IL-5+ILC2 and IL-17A ILCs was higher in the 4weeks-DEE exposure group which induced AHR, neutrophilic and eosinophilic inflammation accompanied by the IL-5, IL-17A levels. Conclusion: Diesel engine exhaust alone can imitate asthmatic characteristics in mice model. Lung-resident ILCs are one of the major effectors cells responsible for a mixed Th2/Th17 response and AHR.

Background: Cough hypersensitivity is an important part of the neurophysiology of cough, which presents with increased cough response to a lower level of stimuli or triggers. Classification of stimuli might bring about additional insight into the underlying mechanisms and management. Objectives: This study investigated the profile of cough triggers in chronic cough patients and their relationship with capsaicin cough sensitivity. Design: This was a cross-sectional observational study. Methods: We enrolled patients with different causes of chronic cough from 2006 to 2021. Cough triggers were defined as cough response to chemical triggers, mechanical triggers, meal triggers, or thermal trigger. Cough sensitivity to capsaicin was evaluated by the capsaicin challenge test, which was expressed as the lowest concentration of capsaicin inducing 5 or more coughing (C5). Results: Among 1211 patients with chronic cough, 1107 (91.4%) patients reported at least one cough trigger. Chemical triggers (66.9%) were the most common cough triggers, followed by thermal exposure (50.6%), mechanical triggers (48.2%), and meal triggers (21.2%). There was no difference in the proportion of chemical triggers among different etiologies. Patients with refractory chronic cough reported the highest prevalence of cough triggers (97.1%). A higher number of meal triggers (34.9%) was associated with gastroesophageal reflux-related cough, and meal triggers and mechanical triggers were more common in refractory chronic cough. Among 254 patients who completed capsaicin challenge test, both the number of total triggers and the number of chemical triggers had a significant but mild correlation with capsaicin cough sensitivity. Conclusion: Cough hypersensitivity as reflected by a variety of cough triggers is a common feature in chronic cough patients, but different etiologies present specific profiles of cough triggers, which could not be evaluated comprehensively by capsaicin cough sensitivity.

In order to grasp the dynamic characteristics of the gear transmission system of high-speed trains under the torque excitation of the driving end and the load end, the pure torsional vibration model of the gear transmission system of high-speed trains is established. The analytical solution of the system under the torque excitation of the driving end and the load end is obtained by using the incremental harmonic balance method (IHBM). The rationality of IHBM is verified by comparing with the numerical solution of the system. By drawing the frequency response curve of the system, the influence of the change of the main parameters in the torque excitation of the driving end and the load end on the dynamic characteristics of the system is analyzed. The results show that there are several high-order super harmonic resonance regions, amplitude jumps, one or more multi-valued solution regions and other nonlinear characteristics in the system under the parameter changes of the driving end and the load end torque excitation. The research results have a unique reference value for in-depth analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the gear transmission system of high-speed trains under the torque excitation of the driving end and the load end.

Abstract Background Aspergillus tracheobronchitis (ATB) is confined as a condition of chronic superficial infection of tracheobronchial tree. Its diagnosis is difficult due to atypical manifestations and low detective rate of Aspergillus thus far. Case presentation: Herein, we presented a 45-year-old male patient with a sole chronic productive cough for five years referred to our cough specialist clinic. Chest high-resolution computed tomography showed multiple lung cysts predominantly located in the subpleural lesions and near the mediastinum. Neither bacteria nor fungi were identified by sputum culture. However, metagenomic next-generation sequencing in sputum detected Aspergillus fumigatus DNA. The genetic testing of whole blood suggested the germline mutation of the tumor suppressor gene folliculin, supporting a diagnosis of Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome. His productive cough symptom significantly improved after receiving itraconazole treatment for 2 months. After discontinuation of antifungal treatment, there was no relapse for four months follow-up. A diagnosis of ATB with BHD syndrome was eventually established in this patient. Conclusion ATB should be considered in any patient with prolonged unexplained productive cough. Next-generation sequencing technologies may be useful to identify ATB which is uncommon and easily ignored in clinical practice.

Abstract Background Whether cysteinyl-leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) have a similar antitussive effect to inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β2-agonist (ICS/LABA), and that LTRA plus ICS/LABA is superior to LTRAs alone or ICS/LABA alone in treating cough variant asthma (CVA) remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy of montelukast alone, budesonide/formoterol alone and the combination of both in the treatment of CVA. Methods Ninety-nine CVA patients were assigned randomly in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive montelukast (M group: 10 mg, once daily), budesonide/formoterol (BF group: 160/4.5 μg, one puff, twice daily), or montelukast plus budesonide/formoterol (MBF group) for 8 weeks. The primary outcomes were changes in the cough visual analogue scale (VAS) score, daytime cough symptom score (CSS) and night-time CSS, and the secondary outcomes comprised changes in cough reflex sensitivity (CRS), the percentage of sputum eosinophils (sputum Eos%) and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). CRS was presented with the lowest concentration of capsaicin that induced at least 5 coughs (C5). The repeated measure was used in data analysis. Results The median cough VAS score (median from 6.0 to 2.0 in the M group, 5.0 to 1.0 in the BF group and 6.0 to 1.0 in the MBF group, all p 0.05). The BF and MBF groups also showed significant decreases in FeNO after 8 weeks treatment (p = 0.001 and p = 0.008, respectively), while no significant change was found in the M group (p = 0.457). There are few data regarding adult protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB). This study aimed to delineate the clinical features of PBB and evaluate their potential diagnostic value in adults. We recruited 55 adult patients with PBB and selected randomly 220 patients with non-PBB as control. A diagnosis of PBB was considered if patients had a cough lasting ≥3 weeks, no abnormalities of chest computed tomography, positive bacterial culture in sputum and/or response well to oral moxifloxacin for 1–4 weeks. The clinical manifestations and laboratory investigations were compared between PBB patients and non-PBB patients. Of the 55 patients with PBB, approximately three-fifths (34, 61.8%) were females with a median age of 46.0 years, which were similar to that of patients with non-PBB. We observed a shorter cough duration in PBB than non-PBB (median 3.0 versus 24.0 months, p < 0.001). Compared to non-PBB patients, PBB patients had higher incidences of productive cough, yellow phlegm and a sensation of mucus in the throat (SMIT) (all p < 0.001). Sputum neutrophils and lymphocytes were markedly elevated in PBB patients than non-PBB patients (both p = 0.004). Bacterial pathogens were detected in eight (28.6%) of 28 cases with PBB. The multivariate analyses showed yellow phlegm, productive cough, SMIT, increased sputum lymphocytes (≥2.3%) and cough duration ≤8.5 months with moderate sensitivity (50.9–81.8%) and moderate-high specificity (60.5–94.4%) for determining PBB. In summary, adults with PBB are characterized by productive cough, yellow phlegm, SMIT and neutrophilic airway inflammation. These cough features and increased sputum lymphocytes may be useful to indicate PBB.

Summary: Background: The long-term prognosis of COVID-19 survivors remains poorly understood. It is evidenced that the lung is the main damaged organ in COVID-19 survivors, most notably in impairment of pulmonary diffusion function. Hence, we conducted a meta-analysis of the potential risk factors for impaired diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) in convalescent COVID-19 patients. Methods: We performed a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Ovid databases for relevant studies from inception until January 7, 2022, limited to papers involving human subjects. Studies were reviewed for methodological quality. Fix-effects and random-effects models were used to pool results. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2. The publication bias was assessed using the Egger's test. PROSPERO registration: CRD42021265377. Findings: A total of eighteen qualified articles were identified and included in the systematic review, and twelve studies were included in the meta-analysis. Our results showed that female (OR: 4.011; 95% CI: 2.928–5.495), altered chest computerized tomography (CT) (OR: 3.002; 95% CI: 1.319–6.835), age (OR: 1.018; 95% CI: 1.007–1.030), higher D-dimer levels (OR: 1.012; 95% CI: 1.001–1.023) and urea nitrogen (OR: 1.004;95% CI: 1.002–1.007) were identified as risk factors for impaired DLCO. Interpretation: Pulmonary diffusion capacity was the most common impaired lung function in recovered patients with COVID-19. Several risk factors, such as female, altered chest CT, older age, higher D-dimer levels and urea nitrogen are associated with impairment of DLCO. Raising awareness and implementing interventions for possible modifiable risk factors may be valuable for pulmonary rehabilitation. ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the potential of in situ airway differentiation of eosinophil progenitors (EoPs) and hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) in sputum and peripheral blood from patients with non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (NAEB), eosinophilic asthma (EA), and healthy controls (HC).MethodsUsing flow cytometry, we enumerated sputum and blood HPCs and EoPs in patients with NAEB (n=15), EA (n=15), and HC (n=14) at baseline. Bottlebrush statistical copolymers (BSCPs) with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polystyrene (PS) side chains grafted to a polynorbornene (PNB) backbone were synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The impact of the glassy PS side chains on the crystallization of the PEO side chains as a function of the backbone length, grafting densities, and fraction of the PS and PEO side chains is described. The bottlebrush architecture, where the side chains are anchored to the backbone, inherently constrains the mobility of PEO. Compared with the bulk crystallization temperature of PEO, the higher glass transition temperature of PS places further constraints on PEO crystallization. The limited mobility of PEO leads to cold crystallization behavior during heating. Reduced grafting densities, in turn, reduce side-chain crowding, leading to less extended pendant structures. The degree of crystallinity of PEO was found to decrease at lower grafting densities to a point where crystallization was not observed. The average distance between bottlebrush backbones increased linearly with the backbone length, suggesting that the backbone forms a distinct mesodomain. For BSCPs with asymmetric volume fractions of PS and PEO side chains, the degree of crystallinity of PEO increases with a change from cold crystallization to normal nucleation and growth during cooling, as a result of reduced constraints on PEO mobility by the glassy PS side chains.

Background: Since December 2019, when it first occurred in Wuhan, China, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly worldwide via human-to-human transmission. We aimed to describe the epidemiological and demographic features of COVID-19 outside Wuhan. Methods: A single-center case series of 136 consecutive (from January 16 to February 17, 2020) patients with confirmed COVID-19 hospitalized in The First People's Hospital of Jingzhou, China, was retrospectively analyzed. Outcomes were followed up until February 19, 2020. Results: Of the 136 patients (median age, 49 years; interquartile range [IQR], 33–63 years; range, 0.3–83 years), 91 (67%) had been to Wuhan or contacted persons from Wuhan. Forty-five (33.1%) were familial clusters. The median incubation period was 6 days (IQR: 4–11 days). All children had an exact exposure history, family members with COVID-19, and “Mild/Moderate” symptoms at admission. Among the 64 elderly patients, 14 (21.9%) had no exposure history, and 43 (67.2%) had a chronic illness. All 11 (8.1%) “Severe/very severe” illness at onset cases and 5 (3.7%) fatal cases were elderly patients. The duration from symptom onset to admission was positively correlated with the duration from symptom onset to endpoint. Overall, patients with a longer incubation period had more severe outcomes. Conclusion: As high-risk susceptible groups, strong protection should be implemented for children and the elderly. Universal screening should be performed for people with a clear exposure history, even lacking apparent symptoms. Given the rapid progression of COVID-19, people should be admitted quickly following symptom onset.

Summary: Chronic cough is a common refractory symptom of various respiratory diseases. However, the neural mechanisms that modulate the cough sensitivity and mediate chronic cough remain elusive. Here, we report that GABAergic neurons in the lateral/ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (l/vlPAG) suppress cough processing via a descending pathway. We found that l/vlPAG neurons are activated by coughing-like behaviors and that tussive agent-evoked coughing-like behaviors are impaired after activation of l/vlPAG neurons. In addition, we showed that l/vlPAG neurons form inhibitory synapses with the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) neurons. The synaptic strength of these inhibitory projections is weaker in cough hypersensitivity model mice than in naïve mice. Important, activation of l/vlPAG GABAergic neurons projecting to the NTS decreases coughing-like behaviors. In contrast, suppressing these neurons enhances cough sensitivity. These results support the notion that l/vlPAG GABAergic neurons play important roles in cough hypersensitivity and chronic cough through disinhibition of cough processing at the medullary level.

Accurate estimation of the thermal conductivity of porous materials is crucial for the modeling of heat transfer and energy consumption calculation in energy, aerospace, biomedicine and chemical engineering, etc. The series-parallel model is a simple and direct method and is usually used in the prediction of the effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of porous materials. In this work, the weighted coefficients of the series and parallel section were obtained based on the tortuosity of the porous materials. Then, the physical model of the ETC of the porous materials was established. Furthermore, the ETC of the porous materials was developed using the fractal model to calculate the pore cross-sectional area of the porous materials. Finally, quantitative analysis of the characteristic parameters, e.g., porosity, tortuosity, tortuous fractal dimension and pore diameter distribution, of the ETC of the porous materials was conducted. The results show that the proposed model can provide an accurate prediction of the ETC of porous materials.

Background: A novel variant of SARS-CoV-2, the Delta variant of concern (VOC, also known as lineage B.1.617.2), is fast becoming the dominant strain globally. We reported the epidemiological, viral, and clinical characteristics of hospitalized patients infected with the Delta VOC during the local outbreak in Guangzhou, China. Methods: We extracted the epidemiological and clinical information pertaining to the 159 cases infected with the Delta VOC across seven transmission generations between May 21 and June 18, 2021. The whole chain of the Delta VOC transmission was described. Kinetics of viral load and clinical characteristics were compared with a cohort of wild-type infection in 2020 admitted to the Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital. Findings: There were four transmission generations within the first ten days. The Delta VOC yielded a significantly shorter incubation period (4.0 vs. 6.0 days), higher viral load (20.6 vs. 34.0, cycle threshold of the ORF1a/b gene), and a longer duration of viral shedding in pharyngeal swab samples (14.0 vs. 8.0 days) compared with the wild-type strain. In cases with critical illness, the proportion of patients over the age of 60 was higher in the Delta VOC group than in the wild-type strain (100.0% vs. 69.2%, p = 0.03). The Delta VOC had a higher risk than wild-type infection in deterioration to critical status (hazards ratio 2.98 [95%CI 1.29-6.86]; p = 0.01). Interpretation: Infection with the Delta VOC is characterized by markedly increased transmissibility, viral loads and risk of disease progression compared with the wild-type strain, calling for more intensive prevention and control measures to contain future outbreaks. Amphiphilic bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs), having a hydrophilic bottlebrush polymer (BP) linked covalently to a hydrophobic BP, were found to segregate to liquid-liquid interfaces to minimize the free energy of the system. The key parameter influencing the outcome of the experiments is the ratio between the degree of polymerization of the backbone (NBB) and that of the side-chain brushes (NSC). Specifically, a spherical, star-like configuration results when NBB < NSC, while a cylindrical, bottlebrush-like shape is preferred when NBB > NSC. Dynamic interfacial tension (γ) and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) measurements show that the BBCP configuration influences the areal density and in-plane diffusion at the fluid interface. The characteristic relaxation times associated with BBCP adsorption (τA) and reorganization (τR) were determined by fitting time-dependent interfacial tension measurements to a sum of two exponential relaxation functions. Both τA and τR initially increased with NBB up to 92 repeat units, due to the larger hydrodynamic radius in solution and slower in-plane diffusivity, attributed to a shorter cross-sectional diameter of the side-chains near the block junction. This trend reversed at NBB = 190, with shorter τA and τR attributed to increased segregation strength and exposure of the bare water/toluene interface due to tilting and/or wiggling of the backbone chains, respectively. The adsorption energy barrier decreased with higher NBB, due to a reduced BBCP packing density at the fluid interface. This study provides fundamental insights into macromolecular assembly at fluid interfaces, as it pertains to unique bottlebrush block architectures.

Star block copolymers (s-BCPs) have potential applications as novel surfactants or amphiphiles for emulsification, compatibilization, chemical transformations, and separations. s-BCPs have chain architectures where three or more linear diblock copolymer arms comprised of two chemically distinct linear polymers, e.g., solvophobic and solvophilic chains, are covalently joined at one point. The chemical composition of each of the subunit polymer chains comprising the arms, their molecular weights, and the number of arms can be varied to tailor the surface and interfacial activity of these architecturally unique molecules. This makes identification of the optimal s-BCP design nontrivial as the total number of plausible s-BCP architectures is experimentally or computationally intractable. In this work, we use molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with a reinforcement learning-based Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) to identify s-BCP designs that minimize the interfacial tension between polar and nonpolar solvents. We first validate the MCTS approach for the design of small- and medium-sized s-BCPs and then use it to efficiently identify sequences of copolymer blocks for large-sized s-BCPs. The structural origins of interfacial tension in these systems are also identified by using the configurations obtained from MD simulations. Chemical insights into the arrangement of copolymer blocks that promote lower interfacial tension were mined using machine learning (ML) techniques. Overall, this work provides an efficient approach to solve design problems via fusion of simulations and ML and provides important groundwork for future experimental investigation of s-BCPs for various applications.

BACKGROUND: Carlin-type gold deposits have attracted much attention because of the influence of As on the analysis and recovery of gold. It is necessary to develop the specific reference materials (RM) to support application research.OBJECTIVE: Study samples were collected from the super large Carlin-type gold deposit in the Yangshan gold mine, discovered in recent years. Four kinds of reference materials GBW07854-GBW07857 for Carlin-type gold ore were developed according to country-level standard technical specification.METHODS: A total of 20 laboratories simultaneously determined element values. The main gold analysis methods included Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and Fire Assay. Wet analysis uses gradient roasting-activated carbon adsorption of gold to separate arsenic and other interference components. Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Spectrophotometry were mainly used to analyze arsenic. Citation analysis relative deviation permissible limit to define within-group outliers makes up for the incompleteness of the Dixon and Grubbs methods to eliminate outliers.RESULTS: The homogeneity test index F < F0.05(29, 30)=1.84, indicated that there were no significant differences between the groups and within the group. No statistically significant changes were observed in 5 analyses during 22 months. The certified values of gold and arsenic in this series of certified reference materials (CRMs) were superior to those of the same level country-level gold ore RM and foreign arsenic-bearing polymetallic ore RM.CONCLUSIONS: This series of CRMs can be used as standards for the analysis and study of gold and arsenic in Carlin-type gold deposits.

The phase behavior of block copolymers (BCPs) at the water-oil interface is influenced by the segmental interaction parameter ( χ${\chi }$ ) and chain architecture. We synthesized a series of star block copolymers (s-BCPs) having polystyrene (PS) as core and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) as corona. The interaction parameters of block-block ( χ${\chi }$ PS-P2VP ) and block-solvent ( χ${\chi }$ P2VP-solvent ) were varied by adjusting the pH of the aqueous solution. Lowering pH increased the fraction of quaternized-P2VP (Q-P2VP) with enhanced hydrophilicity. By transferring the equilibrated interfacial assemblies, morphologies ranging from bicontinuous films at pH of 7 and 3.1 to nanoporous and nanotubular structure at pH of 0.65 were observed. The nanoporous films formed hexagonally packed pores in s-BCP matrix, while nanotubes comprised Q-P2VP as corona and PS as core. Control over pore size, d-spacing between pores, and nanotube diameters was achieved by varying polymer concentration, molecular weight, volume fraction and arm number of s-BCPs. Large-scale nanoporous films were obtained by freeze-drying emulsions. Remarkably, the morphologies of linear BCPs were inverted, forming hexagonal-packed rigid spherical micelles with Q-P2VP as core and PS as corona in multilayer. This work provides insights of phase behaviors of BCP at fluids interface and offer a facile approach to prepare nanoporous film with well-controlled pore structure.

Bottlebrush random copolymers (BRCPs), consisting of a random distribution of two homopolymer chains along a backbone, can segregate to the interface between two immiscible homopolymers. BRCPs undergo a reconfiguration, where each block segregates to one of the homopolymer phases, adopting a Janus-type structure, reducing the interfacial tension and promoting adhesion between the two homopolymers, thereby serving as a Janus bottlebrush copolymer (JBCP) compatibilizer. We synthesized a series of JBCPs by copolymerizing deuterated or hydrogenated polystyrene (DPS/PS) and poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) macromonomers using ruthenium benzylidene-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Subsequent acid-catalyzed hydrolysis converted the PtBA brushes to poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The JBCPs were then placed at the interface between DPS/PS homopolymers and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) homopolymers, where the degree of polymerization of the backbone (NBB) and the grafting density (GD) of the JBCPs were varied. Neutron reflectivity (NR) was used to determine the interfacial width and segmental density distributions (including PS homopolymer, PS block, PAA block and P2VP homopolymer) across the polymer-polymer interface. Our findings indicate that the star-like JBCP with NBB = 6 produces the largest interfacial broadening. Increasing NBB to 100 (rod-like shape) and 250 (worm-like shape) reduced the interfacial broadening due to a decrease in the interactions between blocks and homopolymers by stretching of blocks. Decreasing the GD from 100% to 80% at NBB = 100 caused an increase the interfacial width, yet further decreasing the GD to 50% and 20% reduced the interfacial width, as 80% of GD may efficiently increase the flexibility of blocks and promote interactions between homopolymers, while maintaining relatively high number of blocks attached to one molecule. The interfacial conformation of JBCPs was further translated into compatibilization efficiency. Thin film morphology studies showed that only the lower NBB values (NBB = 6 and NBB = 24) and the 80% GD of NBB = 100 had bicontinuous morphologies, due to a sufficient binding energy that arrested phase separation, supported by mechanical testing using asymmetric double cantilever beam (ADCB) tests. These provide fundamental insights into the assembly behavior of JBCPs compatibilizers at homopolymer interfaces, opening strategies for the design of new BCP compatibilizers.

By combining the unique characteristics of molecular bottlebrushes (MBBs) and the properties of stimuli-responsive polymers, we show that MBBs with randomly grafted poly(n-butyl acrylate) and pH-responsive poly(2-(N,N-diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) side chains are efficient and robust pH-responsive emulsifiers. Water-in-toluene emulsions were formed at pH 4.0 and disrupted by increasing the pH to 10.0. The emulsion generation and disruption was reversible over the ten cycles investigated, and the bottlebrushes remained intact. The exceptional emulsion stability stemmed from the high interfacial binding energy of MBBs, imparted by their large molecular size and Janus architecture at the interface, as evidenced by the interfacial jamming and wrinkling of the assemblies upon reducing the interfacial area. At pH 10.0, PDEAEMA became water-insoluble, and the MBBs desorbed from the interface, causing de-emulsification. Consequently, we have shown that the judicious design of MBBs can generate properties of particle emulsifiers from their large size, while the responsiveness of the MBBs enables more potential applications.

Data are fundamental to Learning Analytics (LA) research and practice. However, the ethical use of data, particularly in terms of respecting learners' privacy rights, is a potential barrier that could hinder the widespread adoption of LA in the education industry. Despite the policies and guidelines of privacy protection being available worldwide, this does not guarantee successful implementation in practice. It is necessary to develop practical approaches that would allow for the translation of the existing guidelines into practice. In this study, we examine an initial set of privacy-preserving mechanisms on a large-scale education dataset. The data utility is evaluated before and after privacy-preserving mechanisms are applied by fitting into commonly used LA models, providing an evaluation of the utility loss. We further explore the balance between preserving data privacy and maintaining data utility in LA. The results prove the compatibility between preserving learners' privacy and LA, providing a benchmark of utility loss to practitioners and researchers in the education sector. Our study reminds an imminent concern of data privacy and advocates that privacy preserving can and should be an integral part of the design of any LA technique.

Learning analytics (LA), like much of machine learning, assumes the training and test datasets come from the same distribution. Therefore, LA models built on past observations are (implicitly) expected to work well for future observations. However, this assumption does not always hold in practice because the dataset may drift. Recently, algorithmic fairness has gained significant attention. Nevertheless, algorithmic fairness research has paid little attention to dataset drift. Majority of the existing fairness algorithms are "statically" designed. Put another way, LA models tuned to be "fair" on past data are expected to still be "fair" when dealing with current/future data. However, it is counter-intuitive to deploy a statically fair algorithm to a nonstationary world. There is, therefore, a need to assess the impact of dataset drift on the unfairness of LA models. For this reason, we investigate the relationship between dataset drift and unfairness of LA models. Specifically, we first measure the degree of drift in the features (i.e., covariates) and target label of our dataset. After that, we train predictive models on the dataset and evaluate the relationship between the dataset drift and the unfairness of the predictive models. Our findings suggest a directly proportional relationship between dataset drift and unfairness. Further, we find covariate drift to have the most impact on unfairness of models as compared to target drift, and there are no guarantees that a once fair model would consistently remain fair. Our findings imply that "robustness" of fair LA models to dataset drift is necessary before deployment.

Star block copolymers (s-BCPs), comprised of multiple linear diblock copolymers joined at a central point, are shown to segregate to the interface between two immiscible homopolymers that are identical to the blocks of the s-BCPs. The s-BCPs undergo a configurational transition at the interface, with different blocks of copolymers being embedded in their respective homopolymers, thereby bridging the interface and promoting adhesion. A series of 4-arm s-BCPs were synthesized with hydrogenated or deuterated polystyrene (PS/dPS) as the core block and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) as the corona block, which was directly placed at the interface between the two homopolymers. Neutron reflectivity (NR) was used to determine the concentration profiles of the PS homopolymer, s-BCP core blocks, and P2VP total segments under equilibrium. The investigation varies the molecular weight (MW) and the total number of s-BCPs at the interface. Self-consistent-field theory (SCFT) was also employed to calculate the concentration profiles of the components at the interface, which were in excellent agreement with experimental results. The NR showed that the interfacial width between the homopolymers increased with the increasing number of s-BCPs at the interface up to a saturation limit. Beyond this limit, additional s-BCPs were released into the corona-miscible phase as unimolecular micelles. For a comparable interlayer thickness of s-BCPs at the interface, lower MW s-BCPs generated a broader interface. SCFT analysis suggested that, at the same packing density, the arms of the low MW s-BCPs align more parallel to the interface, while the arms of high MW s-BCPs adopt a more normal orientation, like their linear BCP counterparts. Furthermore, it was also observed that the core blocks, constrained by the junction points, were oriented more parallel and closer to the interface than the corona blocks. The phase behavior of the polymer blends revealed that s-BCP additives can efficiently reduce the domain size, with the low MW yielding smaller domain sizes due to the greater reduction in the interfacial energy and the high MW arresting phase separation due to their higher binding energy and a jamming of the interfacial assemblies. Asymmetric double cantilever beam (ADCB) tests demonstrated that s-BCPs promoted adhesion more efficiently than their linear BCP counterparts due to stronger binding energy per molecule, suggesting a more efficient compatibilizer for polymer upcycling. The results from these studies provide fundamental insights into the assembly of s-BCPs at homopolymer interfaces, the reduction of domain size, and promotion of adhesion, providing a strategy for the use of s-BCPs as stealth surfactants and universal compatibilizers.

Bottlebrush polymer surfactants (BPSs), formed by the interfacial interactions between bottlebrush polymers (BPs) with poly(acrylic acid) side chains dissolved in an aqueous phase and amine-functionalized ligands dissolved in the oil phase, assemble and bind strongly to the fluid-fluid interface. The ratio between NBB (backbone degree of polymerization) and NSC (side chain degree of polymerization) defines the initial assembly kinetics, interface packing efficiency, and stress relaxation. The equilibrium interfacial tension (γ) increases when NBB < NSC, but decreases when NBB ≫ NSC, correlating to a pronounced change in the effective shape of the BPs from being spherical to worm-like structures. The apparent surface coverage (ASC), i.e., the interfacial packing efficiency, decreases as NBB increases. The dripping-to-jetting transition of an injected polymer solution, as well as fluorescence recovery after photobleaching experiments, revealed faster initial assembly kinetics for BPs with higher NBB. Euler buckling of BPS assemblies with different NBB values was used to characterize the stress relaxation behavior and bending modulus. The stress relaxation behavior was directly related to the ASC, reflecting the strong influence of macromolecular shape on packing efficiency. The bending modulus of BPSs decreases for NBB < NSC, but increased when NBB ≫ NSC, showing the effect of molecular architecture and multisite anchoring. All-liquid printed constructs with lower NBB BPs yielded more stable structured liquids, underscoring the importance of macromolecular packing efficiency at fluid interfaces. Overall, this work elucidates fundamental relationships between nanoscopic structures and macroscopic properties associated with various bottlebrush polymer architectures, which translate to the stabilization of all-fluidic printed constructs.

For ecological economic evaluation based on the unified biophysical matrix this research illustrates an updated emergy synthesis in terms of embodied cosmic exergy instead of embodied solar energy, which successes the foundation of systems ecological theory but changes the starting point for the estimation from simply the sun to the cosmos. According to the modified definition implicating explicit scarcity and strict additivity based on the fundamental thermodynamics laws, the updated emergy approach overcomes the confusable and intractable deficiencies of traditional one and shows firmer theoretical basis as well as better applicability. As a case study for the regional socio-economic ecosystem, a cosmic emergy based ecological economic evaluation of the Beijing urban ecosystem during the period 1978-2004 is presented. The local and external resources supporting the concerned ecosystem are accounted and analyzed in a common unit, i.e., cosmic Joule, according to which a series of indicators are applied to reveal its evolutional characteristics through five aspects as emergy structure, emergy intensity, emergy welfare, environmental impacts, and degree of exploitation and economic efficiency. During the analyzed period, the major emergy source sustaining the operation of the ecosystem had changed from the renewable resources exploited locally to the nonrenewable resources purchased from outside. Emergy intensity for the Beijing urban ecosystem kept rising owing to the continuous investment of resources, which not only improved the living standard but also intensified the environmental pressure. Moreover, the increase of exploitation degree was accompanied with the decline of economic efficiency, while the rising emergy investment ratio implicates that Beijing was at the risks of resources shortage and high dependence on external resources
