The trend of sustainable development has been followed more globally nowadays. There is an urgent need for ecological friendly construction materials in China since the use of concrete produces pollution and leads to inefficient use of energy. Bamboo can effectively address the sustainability trends due to: lightweight construction, little adverse impact on the environment, and anti-seismic properties. However, bamboo products utilization has been very limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility to further utilize bamboo products in the construction industry in China. A review of engineered bamboo products utilization in China, and oversees was conducted. Based on this, a survey focusing on the current situation and suitability of bamboo products was carried out to study their feasibility, and preliminary testing on bonding shear strength for different configurations are presented. The results are promising, in particular the relatively low clamping pressure of 0.6 MPa seems to be sufficient for bonding, and it is clear that engineered bamboo products have a great potential in China. However, further more comprehensive studies on the performance of the laminated bamboo are needed.

In this article, heat conduction in one-dimensional functionally graded media is investigated based on the dual-phase-lag theory to consider the microstructural interactions in the fast transient process of heat conduction. All material properties of the media are assumed to vary continuously according to a power-law formulation with arbitrary non-homogeneity indices except the phase lags which are taken constant for simplicity. The one-dimensional heat conduction equations based on the dual-phase-lag theory are derived in a unified form which can be used for Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates. A semi-analytical solution for temperature and heat flux is presented using the Laplace transform to eliminate the time dependency of the problem. The results in the time domain are then given by employing a numerical Laplace inversion technique. The semi-analytical solution procedure leads to exact expressions for the thermal wave speed in one-dimensional functionally graded media with different geometries based on the dual-phase-lag and hyperbolic heat conduction theories. The transient temperature distributions have been found for various types of dynamic thermal loading. The numerical results are shown to reveal the effects of phase lags, non-homogeneity indices, and thermal boundary conditions on the thermal responses for different temporal disturbances. The oral implant surgery robot could achieved basic "surgical operation intelligence"; however, "decision-making artificial intelligence" has not yet been achieved. The author previously discussed the specific concept of decision-making artificial intelligence. During our exploration of decision-making artificial intelligence, our team further integrated the clinical diagnosis and treatment process of oral implantation, along with the data characteristics of decision indicators and the distribution characteristics of demographic information. As a result, we identified five key scientific and technological issues in the process of decision-making artificial intelligence, namely the construction of a specialized annotation database for oral implantation, the prediction of quantitative indicators, the application of three-dimensional imaging, the solution of data imbalance within indicators, and the joint output of multi-property and multimodal indicators in clinical pathways. This paper will review artificial intelligence research in oral implantology and our team's research progress, elaborating on the aforementioned challenges in intelligentization. It aims to provide references for addressing the mentioned scientific issues and guiding future research directions in the construction of decision-making artificial intelligence in oral medicine.

Objective: The impact of comprehensive risk factor control on heart failure (HF) risk and HF-free survival time in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) was evaluated in this study., Research Design and Methods: This prospective study included 11,949 individuals diagnosed with T2D, matched with 47,796 non-T2D control study participants from the UK Biobank cohort. The degree of comprehensive risk factor control was assessed on the basis of the major cardiovascular risk factors, including blood pressure, BMI, LDL cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c, renal function, smoking, diet, and physical activity. Cox proportional hazards models were used to measure the associations between the degree of risk factor control and HF risk. Irwin's restricted mean was used to evaluate HF-free survival time., Results: During a median follow-up of 12.3 years, 702 individuals (5.87%) with T2D and 1,402 matched control participants (2.93%) developed HF. Each additional risk factor controlled was associated with an average 19% lower risk of HF. Optimal control of at least six risk factors was associated with a 67% lower HF risk (hazard ratio [HR] 0.33; 95% CI 0.20, 0.54). BMI was the primary attributable risk factor for HF. Notably, the excess risk of HF associated with T2D could be attenuated to levels comparable to those of non-T2D control participants when individuals had a high degree of risk factor control (HR 0.66; 95% CI 0.40, 1.07), and they exhibited a longer HF-free survival time., Conclusions: Comprehensive management of risk factors is inversely associated with HF risk, and optimal risk factor control may prolong HF-free survival time among individuals with T2D., (© 2024 by the American Diabetes Association.)

Zinc finger protein 180 (ZNF180) is a multifunctional protein that interacts with nucleic acids and regulates various cellular processes; however, the function of ZNF180 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The present study investigated the role and function of ZNF180 in CRC, and aimed to reveal the underlying molecular mechanism. The results revealed that ZNF180 was downregulated in CRC tissues and was associated with a good prognosis in patients with CRC. Additionally, the expression of ZNF180 was downregulated by methylation in CRC. In vivo and in vitro experiments revealed that ZNF180 overexpression was functionally associated with the inhibition of cell proliferation and the induction of apoptosis. Mechanistically, chromatin immunoprecipitation‑PCR and luciferase assays demonstrated that ZNF180 markedly regulated the transcriptional activity of methyltransferase 14, N6‑adenosine‑methyltransferase non‑catalytic subunit (METTL14) by directly binding to and activating its promoter region. Simultaneous overexpression of ZNF180 and knockdown of METTL14 indicated that the reduction of METTL14 could suppress the effects of ZNF180 on the induction of apoptosis. Clinically, the present study observed a significant positive correlation between ZNF180 and METTL14 expression levels, and low expression of ZNF180 and METTL14 predicted a poor prognosis in CRC. Overall, these findings revealed a novel mechanism by which the ZNF180/METTL14 axis may modulate apoptosis and cell proliferation in CRC. This evidence suggests that this axis may serve as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in patients with CRC.

Due to energy shortages and the greenhouse effect, the efficient use of energy through phase-change materials (PCMs) is gaining increased attention. In this study, magnetic phase-change microcapsules (Mag-mc) were prepared by suspension polymerization. The shell layer of the microcapsules was formed by copolymerizing methyl methacrylate and triethoxyethylene silane, with the latter enhancing the compatibility of the shell layer with the magnetic additive. Ferric ferrous oxide modified by oleic acid (Fe 3 O 4 ( m )) was added as the magnetic additive. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) testing revealed that the content of phase-change materials in microcapsules without and with ferric ferrous oxide were 79.77% and 96.63%, respectively, demonstrating that the addition of Fe 3 O 4 ( m ) improved the encapsulation efficiency and enhanced the energy storage ability of the microcapsules. Laser particle size analysis showed that the overall average particle sizes for the microcapsules without and with ferric ferrous oxide were 3.48 μm and 2.09 μm, respectively, indicating that the incorporation of magnetic materials reduced the size and distribution of the microcapsules. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of the microcapsules was enhanced by the addition of Fe 3 O 4 ( m ). Moreover, the infrared emissivity of the microcapsule-containing film decreased from 0.77 to 0.72 with the addition of Fe 3 O 4 ( m ) to the shell of microcapsules.

With the acceleration of population aging, disability in older adults is a growing public health problem; however, little is known about the role of specific leisure-time activities in affecting disability. This study prospectively examined the association of leisure-time activities with disability among the Chinese oldest old. A total of 14 039 adults aged 80 years or older (median age of 89.8 years) were enrolled from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 1998 to 2014. Disability was defined as the presence of concurrent impairment in activities of daily living and physical performance. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the associations between leisure-time activities and disability. During a mean of 4.2 years (2.7 years) of follow-up, 4487 participants developed disability. Compared with participants who never engaged in leisure-time activities, participants who engaged in almost daily activities, including gardening, keeping domestic animals or pets, playing cards or mahjong, reading books or newspapers, and watching TV or listening to the radio had a lower risk of disability, with HRs of 0.78 (0.69-0.88), 0.64 (0.58-0.70), 0.74 (0.63-0.86), 0.74 (0.65-0.84), and 0.84 (0.77-0.90), respectively. Moreover, the risk of disability gradually decreased with participation in an increasing number of those leisure-time activities (P for trend <0.001). Frequent engagement in leisure-time activities was associated with a lower risk of disability among the Chinese oldest old. Perlidae stands as the most diverse family within Plecoptera, with evidence suggesting possible adaptation to warmer aquatic environments. Tracheal gills are hypothesized to have played a pivotal role in this radiation process. This study presents the description of a fossilized stonefly larva with gills, preserved as a fresh exuvia in mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber from northern Myanmar. The larva was classified within the family Perlidae based on distinctive morphological traits, including toothed lacinia and sharp-cusped mandibles, slender palps, glossae shorter than rounded paraglossae, and highly branched gills on the sides and ventral surface of thoracic segments. Additionally, the presence of a transverse, sparse, and irregular setal row on the occiput further indicates classification within the subfamily Acroneuriinae. Metabolic responses to cellular stress are pivotal in cell ferroptosis, with mitophagy serving as a crucial mechanism in both metabolic processes and ferroptosis. This study aims to elucidate the effects of high glucose on cardiomyocytes (CMs) and cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) regarding ferroptosis and to uncover the underlying mechanisms involved. We examined alterations in glycolysis, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and mitophagy, which are essential for metabolic adaptations and ferroptosis. High glucose exposure induced ferroptosis specifically in CMs, while CFs exhibited resistance to ferroptosis, increased glycolytic activity, and no change in OXPHOS. Moreover, high glucose treatment enhanced mitophagy and upregulated mitochondrial ferritin (FTMT). Notably, the combination of FTMT and the autophagy-related protein nuclear receptor coactivator 4 (NCOA4) increased under high glucose conditions. Silencing FTMT significantly impeded mitophagy and eliminated ferroptosis resistance in CFs cultured under high glucose conditions. The transcription factor forkhead box A1 (FOXA1) was upregulated in CFs upon high glucose exposure, playing a crucial role in the increased expression of FTMT. Within the 5'-flanking sequence of the FTMT mRNA, approximately -500 nt from the transcription initiation site, three putative FOXA1 binding sites were identified. High glucose augmented the binding affinity between FOXA1 and these sequences, thereby promoting FTMT transcription. Background: Dietary diversity has been suggested as a potential preventive measure against frailty in older adults, but the effect of changes in dietary diversity on frailty is unclear. This study was conducted to examine the association between the dietary diversity score (DDS) and frailty among older Chinese adults., Methods: A total of 12,457 adults aged 65 years or older were enrolled from three consecutive and nonoverlapping cohorts from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (the 2002 cohort, the 2005 cohort, and the 2008 cohort). DDS was calculated based on nine predefined food groups, and DDS changes were assessed by comparing scores at baseline and the first follow-up survey. We used 39 self-reported health items to assess frailty. Cox proportional hazard models were performed to examine the association between DDS change patterns and frailty., Results: Participants with low-to-low DDS had the highest frailty incidence (111.1/1000 person-years), while high-to-high DDS had the lowest (41.1/1000 person-years). Compared to the high-to-high group of overall DDS pattern, participants in other DDS change patterns had a higher risk of frailty (HRs ranged from 1.25 to 2.15). Similar associations were observed for plant-based and animal-based DDS. Compared to stable DDS changes, participants with an extreme decline in DDS had an increased risk of frailty, with HRs of 1.38 (1.24, 1.53), 1.31 (1.19, 1.44), and 1.29 (1.16, 1.43) for overall, plant-based, and animal-based DDS, respectively., Conclusions: Maintaining a lower DDS or having a large reduction in DDS was associated with a higher risk of frailty among Chinese older adults. Tunchang pigs, mainly distributed throughout Hainan Province of China, are well-known for their superior meat quality, crude feed tolerance, and adaptability to high temperatures and humidity. Runs of homozygosity (ROH) can provide valuable information about the inbreeding coefficient in individuals and selection signals that may reveal candidate genes associated with key functional traits. Runs of heterozygosity (ROHet) are commonly associated with balance selection, which can help us understand the adaptive evolutionary history of domestic animals. In this study, we investigated ROHs and ROHets in 88 Tunchang pigs. We also compared the estimates of inbreeding coefficients in individuals calculated based on four methods. In summary, we detected a total of 16 ROH islands in our study, and 100 genes were found within ROH regions. These genes were correlated with economically important traits such as reproduction (e.g., SERPIND1, HIRA), meat quality (e.g., PI4KA, TBX1), immunity (e.g., ESS2, RANBP1), adaption to heat stress (TXNRD2 and DGCR8), and crude food tolerance (TRPM6). Moreover, we discovered 18 ROHet islands harbouring genes associated with reproduction (e.g., ARHGEF12, BMPR2), immune system (e.g., BRD4, DNMT3B). Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia with high morbidity and mortality implications. Several studies have described a paradoxical inverse relationship between serum cholesterol and the risk of AF, but it remains unknown whether remnant cholesterol (RC) is associated with AF incidence., Objective: This study aims to prospectively investigate the association between RC and AF., Methods: A total of 392,783 participants free of AF at baseline from the UK Biobank were included for the analysis. Cox proportional hazards model, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analyses were used to evaluate the independent association between RC levels and the risk of new-onset AF. Furthermore, we performed a discordance analysis by using the median cutoff points of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and RC., Results: After a median follow-up of 12.8 years (interquartile range 12.0-13.6 years), a total of 23,558 participants experienced incident AF. Compared with the highest RC level, the lower RC level was associated with an increased risk of AF incidence (quartile 1 vs quartile 4: hazard ratio 1.396; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.343-1.452). The results remained robust across a series of sensitivity analyses. In the discordance analyses, a significantly higher risk of AF was observed in participants with discordant low RC/high LDL-C levels than in those with concordant high RC/LDL-C levels. Background: Ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) has been associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk and mortality, but its association with cardiac arrhythmias was still unsettled. In this prospective cohort study, we investigated the relationship between CVH and subsequent arrhythmias risk, including atrial fibrillation (AF)/flutter, ventricular arrhythmias, and bradyarrhythmias., Methods: Data from 287,264 participants initially free of arrhythmias in the UK Biobank were included in the analysis. Cox regression models were used to examine the relationship between CVH levels calculated by the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) metrics, with cardiac arrhythmias risk., Results: During a median follow-up period of 12.8 years, 16,802 incident AF, 2186 incident ventricular arrhythmias, and 4128 incident bradyarrhythmias were identified. After adjustment for confounding factors, participants with high initial CVH levels had significantly lower risks for AF (hazard ratio [HR], 0.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.59-0.68), ventricular arrhythmias (HR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.40-0.59), and bradyarrhythmias (HR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.55-0.74) compared with those with low CVH levels. Furthermore, each standard deviation (SD) increase in LE8 scores was associated with a 15% lower risk of AF, 21% for ventricular arrhythmias, and 13% for bradyarrhythmias, respectively. In addition, a significant interaction was observed between CVH levels and the genetic risk of AF (P for interaction, 0.021). The reverse correlation seemed to be more noticeable in individuals with a lower genetic susceptibility to AF., Conclusions: We concluded that higher levels of CVH, estimated by the LE8 metrics, were associated with significantly reduced risks of AF, ventricular arrhythmias, and bradyarrhythmias., (Copyright © 2024 Canadian Cardiovascular Society. Nanostructured iron disulfide (FeS 2 ) was uniformly deposited on regenerated cellulose (RC) and oxidized carbon nanotube (CNT)-based composite films using a simple chemical bath deposition method to form RC/CNT/FeS 2 composite films. The RC/CNT composite film served as an ideal substrate for the homogeneous deposition of FeS 2 microspheres due to its unique porous architecture, large specific surface area, and high conductivity. Polypyrrole (PPy), a conductive polymer, was coated on the RC/CNT/FeS 2 composite to improve its conductivity and cycling stability. Due to the synergistic effect of FeS 2 with high redox activity and PPy with high stability and conductivity, the RC/CNT/FeS 2 /PPy composite electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. The RC/CNT/0.3FeS 2 /PPy-60 composite electrode tested with Na 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolyte could achieve an excellent areal capacitance of 6543.8 mF cm -2 at a current density of 1 mA cm -2 . The electrode retained 91.1% of its original capacitance after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the ion transfer channels with a pore diameter of 5-30 μm were formed in the RC/CNT/0.3FeS 2 /PPy-60 film after a 10,000 cycle test. A symmetrical supercapacitor device composed of two identical pieces of RC/CNT/0.3FeS 2 /PPy-60 composite electrodes provided a high areal capacitance of 1280 mF cm -2 , a maximum energy density of 329 μWh cm -2 , a maximum power density of 24.9 mW cm -2 , and 86.2% of capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 40 mA cm -2 when tested at a wide voltage window of 1.4 V. Background and Aims: The associations between dietary vitamin C (VC), vitamin E (VE) intake and aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) remain unclear. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the associations between dietary VC and VE with the incident risk of AAD., Methods and Results: A total of 139 477 participants of UK Biobank cohort were included in the analysis. Dietary VC and VE consumptions were acquired through a 24-h recall questionnaire. Cox proportional regression models were used to examine the associations between VC, VE intake and the risk of AAD. Incident AAD was ascertained through hospital inpatient records and death registers. During a median follow-up of 12.5 years, 962 incident AAD events were documented. Both dietary VC [adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 0.77; 95 % confidence intervals (CI), 0.63-0.93; P-trend = 0.008] and VE (adjusted HR, 0.70; 95 % CI, 0.57-0.87; P-trend = 0.002) were inversely associated with incident AAD when comparing the participants in the highest quartile with those in the lowest. In subgroup analyses, the associations were more pronounced in participants who were over 60 years old, participants with smoking history, hypertension or hyperlipidemia, who were under the high risk of AAD., Conclusion: Higher dietary VC and VE intakes are associated with reduced risk of AAD. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) damages liver cells through abnormal immune responses. Mitochondrial metabolism is necessary for effector functions of white blood cells (WBCs). The aim was to investigate the altered counts and mitochondrial mass (MM) of WBCs by two novel indicators of mitochondrial mass, MM and percentage of low mitochondrial membrane potential, MMP low %, due to chronic HBV infection. The counts of lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes in the HBV infection group were in decline, especially for lymphocyte (p = 0.034) and monocyte counts (p = 0.003). The degraded MM (p = 0.003) and MMP low % (p = 0.002) of lymphocytes and MM (p = 0.005) of monocytes suggested mitochondrial dysfunction of WBCs. HBV DNA within WBCs showed an extensive effect on mitochondria metabolic potential of lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes indicated by MM; hepatitis B e antigen was associated with instant mitochondrial energy supply indicated by MMP low % of neutrophils; hepatitis B surface antigen, antiviral therapy by nucleos(t)ide analogues and prolonged infection were also vital factors contributing to WBC alterations. Moreover, degraded neutrophils and monocytes could be used to monitor immune responses reflecting chronic liver fibrosis and inflammatory damage. In conclusion, MM combined with cell counts of WBCs could profoundly reflect WBC alterations for monitoring chronic HBV infection. Mirizzi syndrome is a serious complication of gallstone disease. It is caused by the impacted stones in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct. One of the features of Mirizzi syndrome is severe inflammation or dense fibrosis at the Calot's triangle. In our clinical practice, bile duct, branches of right hepatic artery and right portal vein clinging to gallbladder infundibulum are often observed due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum. The intraoperative damage of branches of right hepatic artery occurs more easily than that of bile duct, all of which are hidden pitfalls for surgeons. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are the preferable tools for the diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome. Anterograde cholecystectomy in Mirizzi syndrome is easy to damage branches of right hepatic artery and bile duct due to gallbladder infundibulum adhered to right hepatic hilum. Subtotal cholecystectomy is an easy, safe and definitive approach to Mirizzi syndrome. When combined with the application of ERCP, a laparoscopic management of Mirizzi syndrome by well-trained surgeons is feasible and safe. The objective of this review was to highlight its existing problems: (1) low preoperative diagnostic rate, (2) easy to damage bile duct and branches of right hepatic artery, and (3) high concomitant gallbladder carcinoma. The primary outcomes were incident arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/Af), ventricular arrhythmia, and bradyarrhythmia. Cox regression analysis was conducted on the basis of 491,117 participants free of cardiac arrhythmias from the UK Biobank. The 2-sample mendelian randomization (MR) and 1-sample MR were used to ensure a causal effect of genetically predicted daytime napping on the risk of arrhythmias., Results: During a median follow-up of 11.91 years, 28,801 incident AF/Af cases, 4132 incident ventricular arrhythmias, and 11,616 incident bradyarrhythmias were documented. Compared with never/rarely napping, usually napping was significantly associated with higher risks of AF/Af (hazard ratio, 1.141; 95% CI, 1.083-1.203) and bradyarrhythmia (hazard ratio, 1.138; 95% CI, 1.049-1.235) but not ventricular arrhythmia after adjustment for various covariates. Background: The potential influence of tinnitus on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality has yet to be explored. We aim to examine the correlations between tinnitus and the risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality., Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study utilising data from the UK Biobank. The presence of tinnitus was evaluated through a questionnaire. The primary outcome was defined as a composition of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and mortality from CVD, as well as all-cause mortality. Cox proportional hazard models were employed to examine the associations between tinnitus and both the primary outcome and its individual components. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate the robustness of the primary analysis., Results: A total of 140,146 participants were included in the study. The presence of tinnitus was found to be associated with a higher incident rate of the primary outcome (HR = 1.057, 95%CI: 1.017-1.099, p  = 0.005), MI (HR = 1.139, 95%CI: 1.061-1.222, p  < 0.001) and all-cause mortality (HR = 1.053, 95%CI: 1.003-1.105, p  = 0.038) after adjusting for confounders. However, there was no significant association between tinnitus and stroke or mortality from CVD. Subgroup analysis revealed that the association between tinnitus and the primary outcome was significant in females, participants with abnormal BMI, and those without hearing difficulty, depression or anxiety. Sensitivity analyses yielded consistent results., Conclusion: The findings from this study contribute to the existing body of evidence suggesting an association between tinnitus and an increased risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.

Remnant cholesterol (RC) has been associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but its relationship with hypertension remains unclear. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the association between RC and subsequent hypertension risk. Data from the UK Biobank, comprising 295,062 participants initially free of hypertension, were analyzed. Cox proportional hazards regression assessed the association between RC quartiles and hypertension risk. Discordance analysis evaluated the risk of hypertension in discordant/concordant groups of RC and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) using the difference in percentile units (>10 units). Restricted cubic spline curves were used to model the relationship between RC and hypertension risk. The mean ± SD age of participants was 55.1 ± 8.1 years, with 40.6% being men and 94.7% White. During a median follow-up of 12.8 years, 39,038 participants developed hypertension. Comparing extreme quartiles of RC, the hazard ratio (HR) for incident hypertension was 1.20 (95% CI: 1.17-1.24). After adjusting for traditional risk factors, each 1 mmol/L increase in RC levels was associated with a 27% higher risk of incident hypertension (HR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.23-1.31). The discordant group with high RC/low LDL-C exhibited a higher risk of incident hypertension compared to the concordant group (HR: 1.06; 95% CI: 1.03-1.09). Spline curves further demonstrated a positive association between RC and the risk of incident hypertension. We concluded that elevated RC emerged as an independent risk factor of incident hypertension, extending beyond traditional risk factors. Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a highly malignant biliary tract cancer with poor prognosis. Previous studies have implicated the gut microbiota in CCA, but evidence for causal mechanisms is lacking., Aim: To investigate the causal relationship between gut microbiota and CCA risk., Methods: We performed a two-sample mendelian randomization study to evaluate potential causal associations between gut microbiota and CCA risk using genome-wide association study summary statistics for 196 gut microbial taxa and CCA. Genetic variants were used as instrumental variables. Multiple sensitivity analyses assessed result robustness., Results: Fifteen gut microbial taxa showed significant causal associations with CCA risk. Higher genetically predicted abundance of genus Eubacteriumnodatum group , genus Ruminococcustorques group , genus Coprococcus , genus Dorea , and phylum Actinobacteria were associated with reduced risk of gallbladder cancer and extrahepatic CCA. Increased intrahepatic CCA risk was associated with higher abundance of family Veillonellaceae , genus Alistipes , order Enterobacteriales , and phylum Firmicutes. Protective effects against CCA were suggested for genus Collinsella , genus Eisenbergiella , genus Anaerostipes , genus Paraprevotella , genus Parasutterella , and phylum Verrucomicrobia. Sensitivity analyses indicated these findings were reliable without pleiotropy., Conclusion: This pioneering study provides novel evidence that specific gut microbiota may play causal roles in CCA risk. Ambient air pollution is a major global health concern. Yet, no study has thoroughly assessed its link to respiratory mortality. Our research evaluated the combined and individual effects of air pollutants on respiratory mortality risks based on the UK Biobank. A total of 366,478 participants were studied. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the respiratory mortality risk from combined long-term exposure to five pollutants, summarized as a weighted air pollution score. During a median of 13.6 years of follow-up, 6113 deaths due to respiratory diseases were recorded. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of respiratory diseases were 2.64 (2.05-3.39), 1.62 (1.23-2.12), 2.06 (1.73-2.45), 1.20 (1.16-1.25), and 1.07 (1.05-1.08) per 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 , PM 2.5-10 , PM 10 , NO 2 , and NO x , respectively. The air pollution score showed a dose-response association with an elevated respiratory mortality risk. The highest versus lowest quartile air pollution score was linked to a 44% increase in respiratory mortality risk (HR 1.44, 95% CI: 1.33-1.57), with consistent findings in subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Background and Aims: The cachexia index (CXI) is a novel biomarker for estimating cancer cachexia. The cachexia index based on hand-grip strength (H-CXI) has been recently developed as a simple proxy for CXI. The present study aims to compare both the H-CXI and CXI for the prediction of cancer cachexia and postoperative outcomes in patients who underwent radical colectomy for colorectal cancer., Methods: Patients who underwent radical operations for colorectal cancer were included in this study. Cancer cachexia was diagnosed according to the international consensus outlined by Fearon et al. The cachexia index (CXI) was calculated as [skeletal muscle index (SMI) × serum albumin/neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR)]. The H-CXI was calculated as [hand-grip strength (HGS)/height 2  × serum albumin/NLR]. The SMI was measured based on the preoperative CT images at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) level. HGS was measured before surgery., Results: From July 2014 to May 2021, a total of 1,411 patients were included in the present study, of whom 361 (25.6%) were identified as having cancer cachexia. Patients with cachexia had a lower CXI ( p  < 0.001) and lower H-CXI ( p  < 0.001) than those without cachexia. A low CXI but not low H-CXI independently predicted cancer cachexia in the multivariate analysis (OR 1.448, p  = 0.024). Both a low CXI (HR 1.476, p  < 0.001 for OS; HR 1.611, p  < 0.001 for DFS) and low H-CXI (HR 1.369, p  = 0.007 for OS; HR 1.642, p  < 0.001 for DFS) were independent predictors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) after adjusting for the same covariates. A low H-CXI but not low CXI was an independent risk factor for postoperative complications (OR 1.337, p  = 0.044). No significant association was found between cancer cachexia and postoperative complications., Conclusion: The CXI and H-CXI exhibited better prognostic value than cancer cachexia for the prediction of postoperative outcomes in patients who underwent radical colectomy for colorectal cancer. The H-CXI was a superior index over the CXI in predicting short-term clinical outcomes, whereas the CXI demonstrated a closer correlation with Fearon's criteria for cancer cachexia. The precise mechanisms underlying the inhibitory effects of SIRT3, a mitochondrial sirtuin protein, on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development, as well as its impact on mitochondrial respiration, remain poorly understood. We assessed sirtuins 3 (SIRT3) levels in HCC tissues and Huh7 cells cultured under hypoxic condition. We investigated the effects of SIRT3 on cell proliferation, glycolytic metabolism, mitochondrial respiration, mitophagy, and mitochondrial biogenesis in Huh7 cells. Besides, we explored the potential mechanisms regulating SIRT3 expression in hypoxically cultured Huh7 cells. Gradual reduction in SIRT3 expressions were observed in both adjacent tumor tissues and tumor tissues. Similarly, SIRT3 expressions were diminished in Huh7 cells cultured under hypoxic condition. Forced expression of SIRT3 attenuated the growth of hypoxically cultured Huh7 cells. SIRT3 overexpression led to a decrease in extracellular acidification rate while increasing oxygen consumption rate. SIRT3 downregulated the levels of hexokinase 2 and pyruvate kinase M2. Moreover, SIRT3 enhanced mitophagy signaling, as indicated by mtKeima, and upregulated key proteins involved in various mitophagic pathways while reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species levels. Furthermore, SIRT3 increased proxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1α levels and the amount of mitochondrial DNA in Huh7 cells. Notably, β-catenin expressions were elevated in Huh7 cells cultured under hypoxic condition. Antagonists and agonists of β-catenin respectively upregulated and downregulated SIRT3 expressions in hypoxically cultured Huh7 cells. The modulationsof glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration represent the primary mechanism through which SIRT3, suppressed by β-catenin, inhibits HCC cell proliferation.

Background: The association of changes in waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) with subsequent risk of multimorbidity remains unclear among older Chinese adults. Therefore, we aimed to assess this association by utilizing data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS)., Methods: Our study was based on the 2011/2012 wave of the CLHLS whose follow-up surveys were conducted in 2014 and 2017/2018. A total of 2900 participants aged 65 and above at baseline were enrolled. WC, WHtR, and WWI were calculated from measured height, weight, and waist circumference. Multimorbidity refers to the coexistence of two or more of 18 chronic diseases. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) to evaluate the effect of three-year changes in WC, WHtR, and WWI on the risk of multimorbidity., Results: During a mean follow-up time of 4.2 (2.0) years, 906 multimorbidity cases were identified. Compared to participants in the persistently low WC group, those in the WC gain group and the persistently high WC group had a higher multimorbidity risk with adjusted HRs (95%CI) of 1.23 (1.01-1.50) and 1.34(1.14-1.58), respectively. Participants in the WHtR gain group and the persistently high WHtR group also had higher risks of multimorbidity with HRs (95%CI) of 1.35 (1.08-1.67) and 1.27 (1.05-1.53), respectively, relative to the persistently low WHtR group. Compared to the persistently low WWI group, those in the WWI loss group had a lower risk of multimorbidity with HRs (95%CI) of 0.80 (0.66-0.98). For every standard deviation increase in WC, WHtR, and WWI over three years, the risk of multimorbidity was higher by 12% (95%CI: 1.05-1.19), 13% (95%CI: 1.06-1.20), and 12% (95%CI: 1.05-1.20), respectively., Conclusions: Associations of changes in WC, WHtR and WWI with multimorbidity are significant among older Chinese adults. The giant ladybug Megalocaria dilatata (Fabricius) is a potential biocontrol agent and a valuable model for coccinellid genomics and evolutionary biology. However, the lack of a reference genome for M. dilatata has impeded further explorations into its evolution and constrained its use in pest management. Here, we assembled and annotated a high-quality, chromosome-level genome of M. dilatata. The resulting assembly spans 772.3 Mb, with a scaffold N50 of 72.48 Mb and a GC content of 34.23%. The Hi-C data aided in anchoring the assembly onto 10 chromosomes ranging from 43.35 to 108.16 Mb. We identified 493.33 Mb of repeat sequences, accounting for 63.88% of the assembled genome. Our gene prediction identified 25,346 genes, with 81.89% annotated in public protein databases. The genome data will provide a valuable resource for studying the biology and evolution of Coccinellidae, aiding in pest control strategies and advancing research in the field., (© 2024. Conventional photoresponsive materials have low photon utilization due to irregular distribution of photoactive groups, which severely limits the related real applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can modulate the regular arrangement of functional groups to improve the electron transport paths and enhance the photon utilization, which provides strong support for the development of photoactive materials with excellent performance. In this work, one effective strategy for constructing a photoactive MOF had been developed via the utilization of Cd 2+ and pyrazinoquinoxaline tetracarboxylic acid. The structural advantages of the Cd-MOF, such as a porous structure, abundant subject-object interaction sites, and a stable framework, ensure the prerequisite for various applications, while the better synergistic effect of Cd 3 clusters and the pyrazinoquinoxaline derivative ensures efficient electron transfer efficiency. Therefore, by virtue of these structural advantages, the Cd-MOF can achieve fluorescence quenching detection for a variety of substrates, such as Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2- , MnO 4 - , nitrofuran antibiotics, and TNP explosives, while fluorescence enhancement detection can be achieved for halogen ions, Cs + , Pb 2+ , and NO 2 - . In addition, the Cd-MOF can be used as a photocatalyst to successfully achieve the photocatalytic conversion of benzylamine to N-benzylbenzimidate under mild conditions. Thus, the Cd-MOF as a whole shows the possibility of application as a diverse fluorescence detection and photocatalyst and also illustrates the feasibility of preparing high-performance photoactive materials using the pyrazinoquinoxaline derivative.

Objective: To investigate the impact of lifestyle, apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene, and their interaction on the risk for cognitive frailty in the elderly population in China. Methods: The study participants were from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. The information about their lifestyles were collected by questionnaire survey, and a weighted lifestyle score was constructed based on β coefficients associated with specific lifestyles to assess the combined lifestyle. ApoE genotypes were assessed by rs429358 and rs7412 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Cognitive frailty was assessed based on cognitive function and physical frailty. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the association of lifestyle and ApoE gene with the risk for cognitive frailty and evaluate the multiplicative and additive interactions between lifestyle and ApoE gene. Results: A total of 5 676 elderly persons, with median age [ M ( Q 1 , Q 3 )] of 76 (68, 85) years, were included, in whom 615 had cognitive frailty. The analysis by Cox proportional hazards regression model indicated that moderate and high levels of dietary diversity could reduce the risk for cognitive frailty by 18% [hazard ratio ( HR )=0.82, 95% CI : 0.68-1.00] and 28% ( HR =0.72, 95% CI : 0.57-0.91), respectively; moderate and high levels of physical activity could reduce the risk by 31% ( HR =0.69, 95% CI : 0.56-0.85) and 23% ( HR =0.77, 95% CI : 0.64-0.93), respectively. Healthy lifestyle was associated with a 40% reduced risk for cognitive frailty ( HR =0.60, 95% CI : 0.46-0.78). ApoE ε4 allele was associated with a 26% increased risk for cognitive frailty ( HR= 1.26, 95% CI : 1.02-1.56). No multiplicative or additive interactions were found between lifestyle and ApoE gene. Conclusions: Dietary diversity and regular physical activity have protective effects against cognitive frailty in elderly population. Healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk for cognitive frailty in elderly population regardless of ApoE ε4 allele carriage status.

Objective: To investigate whether sarcopenia could predict postoperative outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer with Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM)-defined malnutrition., Methods: Clinical data of patients who underwent radical resection for colorectal cancer were prospectively collected. Sarcopenia was diagnosed by the combination of low handgrip strength and low muscle quantity or quality as measured by abdominal computed tomography (CT) images. Logistic regression analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were performed to identify independent predictors for postoperative complications and survival, respectively., Results: A total of 310 patients with colorectal cancer with GLIM-defined malnutrition were included, of which 145 (46.77%) were identified with sarcopenia. Malnutritional patients with sarcopenia had significantly higher incidences of total complications (34.5% versus 15.8%), severe complications (9.7% versus 1.8%), longer lengths of postoperative hospital stay (median, 14 days versus 12 days), and more costs (median, 56,257 RMB versus 49,024 RMB) than those without sarcopenia. Sarcopenia was an independent predictive factor for postoperative complications (OR 2.531, 95% CI 1.451-4.415), overall survival (HR 1.519, 95% CI 1.026-2.248), and disease-free survival (HR 1.847, 95% CI 1.324-2.576). Patients with severe sarcopenia had a higher incidence of severe complications but not total complications or survival than those with not-severe sarcopenia. Moreover, the predictive value of sarcopenia for postoperative complications was attributed to muscle strength and quality but not muscle quantity., Conclusion: Sarcopenia predicts postoperative complications and survival in patients with colorectal cancer with GLIM-defined malnutrition. Objectives: To investigate whether the integration of high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) to routine clinical examinations could improve diagnostic performance and management decision for pigmented skin tumors., Methods: Three general practitioners trained previously and a dermatologist independently assessed pigmented skin tumors and rendered management decision based on clinical examinations alone or clinical examinations integrating HFUS., Results: After integrating HFUS, the diagnostic area under the curve (AUC) (0.658-0.693 versus 0.848, all P < .05) and specificity (46.6-58.6% versus 89.7%, all P < .05) for pigmented skin malignancies were improved for general practitioners, meanwhile unnecessary biopsy rate reduced (42.9-53.6% versus 10.7%, P < .001). To the dermatologist, the diagnostic AUC (0.822 versus 0.949, P < .001), sensitivity (81.7% versus 96.7%, P = .012) and specificity (0.828 versus 0.931, P = .031) improved significantly, meanwhile both missed biopsy rate (14.5% versus 4.8%, P = .031) and unnecessary biopsy rate (19.6% versus 7.1%, P = .016) decreased. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are recognized by the World Health Organization as a useful disinfectant against microbes. The synergistic effect of zwitterionic polymers with QACs as antimicrobial agents rather than QACs alone is yet to be investigated. A potential strategy is the use of covalent bonding to halt the release of minute antibacterials and a hierarchy of functional layers to detain and annihilate microbes. The strategy was tested on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface on which quaternized poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (qDMA+) and sulfobetaine (SBMA) were hierarchically functionalized. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed the quaternization of DMA to qDMA+, grafting of qDMA + on PDMS (PDMS-qDMA+), and grafting of the SBMA overlayer on PDMS-qDMA+ (PDMS-qDMA+-SB). Contact angle measurement showed that PDMS-qDMA + exhibited the lowest contact angle (26.2 ± 2.9°) compared with the hydrophobic PDMS (115.2 ± 1.6°), but that of PDMSqDMA+-SB increased to 56.3 ± 1.3°. The Escherichia coli survival count revealed that PDMS-qDMA+ and PDMS-qDMA+-SB exhibited significantly greater bactericidal ability than PDMS. Confocal laser scanning microscopy revealed fewer dead bacteria on PDMS-qDMA+-SB than on PDMS-qDMA+. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that E. coli was disintegrated on the functionalized surface via dual-end cell lysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of this type of process. A good integration of dental implants and the surrounding soft tissue is essential to ensure the long-term effect of implant. In this review, we summarized the research progress of peri-implant soft tissue integration of dental titanium implants, with emphasis on the modification of the gingival interface of implants based on immune microenvironment regulation. This method influences the immune response around the implant by promoting the surface properties of implants, so as to enhance the peri-implant soft tissue integration. The purpose of this review is to provide reference for the related research and clinical application in the field of dental implantation.

Both air pollution and physical inactivity contribute to the increased risk of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the detrimental effects of air pollution exposure could be augmented by an elevated intake of air pollutants during exercise. In the present study, we analyzed 367,978 participants who were CKD-free at baseline (2006-2010) based on the UK Biobank. Air pollutants included fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and nitrogen oxides (NO X ). Physical activity (PA) was obtained by the self-reported questionnaire. Using Cox proportional hazards models, hazard ratios (HRs) for incident CKD related to air pollution, PA, and incident CKD were evaluated. During a median of 12.4 years of follow-up, 14,191 incident CKD events were documented. High PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , and NO X increased CKD risks by 11 %, 15 %, 14 %, and 12 %, respectively, while moderate and high PA reduced CKD risks by 18 % and 22 %, respectively. Participants with high PA and low air pollution exposure had 29 %, 31 %, 30 %, and 30 % risks of incident CKD than those with low PA and high air pollution exposure for the four air pollutants, with multivariable-adjusted HRs of 0.71 (95 % confidence intervals [CI]: 0.65-0.76) for PM 2.5 , 0.69 (95 % CI: 0.64-0.75) for PM 10 , 0.70 (95 % CI: 0.64-0.75) for NO 2 , and 0.70 (95 % CI: 0.64-0.75) for NO X . No clear interactions were observed between each air pollutant exposure and PA (all P for interaction > 0.05). The findings that reducing air pollution exposure and increasing PA were both independently correlated with a diminished risk of incident CKD suggest that PA could be targeted to prevent CKD generally regardless of air pollution levels. Two-dimensional metal-organic layer (MOL) nanosheets, as nonhomogeneous catalysts, show better optical activity in the field of photocatalysis due to their unique structural advantages. Current research focuses on how to modify the structure of 2D nanosheets by means of crystal engineering to modulate the intralayer electron transfer pathway and systematically investigate the impacts of size effect and electron transfer pathway on the energy utilization efficiency of crystalline materials. In the present work, a triple lophine-derived ligand was designed and prepared, which exhibits a large π-conjugation system and multiple D-A (D: donor, A: acceptor) electron transfer pathways. 2D MOL constructed with Cd ions can be exfoliated by physical sonication to obtain double-walled 2D MOL nanosheets. Compared with the bulk crystalline material, the 2D nanosheets exhibit better photovoltaic properties. Benefiting from the excellent structural advantages, 2D MOL nanosheets could be used as photocatalysts for a variety of aerobic oxidation reactions under mild conditions (10 W white LED, room temperature), such as the trifluoromethylation of coumarins, the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives from aromatic diamines and aromatic aldehydes, and the preparation of 2,4,6-triarylpyridine derivatives, all with high conversion rates and selectivity (yield typically greater than 88%). The related results illustrate that the introduction of the photoactive triple-lophine unit into 2D MOL nanosheets can effectively modulate the electron transport mode and enhance energy utilization, which provides a new research idea for the development of nonhomogeneous photocatalysts aimed at the applications of visible light-driven organic conversion.

The structural integrity and esthetic appeal of concrete can be compromised by concrete cracks. Promise has been shown by microbe-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) as a solution for concrete cracking, with a focus on urease-producing microorganisms in research. Bacillus cereus was isolated from soil and employed for this purpose in this study due to its high urease activity. The strain exhibited strong tolerance for alkaline media and high salt levels, which grew at a pH of 13 and 4% salt concentration. The repair of concrete cracks with this strain was evaluated by assessing the effects of four different thickeners at varying concentrations. The most effective results were achieved with 10 g/L of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na). The data showed that over 90% repair of cracks was achieved by this system with an initial water penetration time of 30 s. The study also assessed the quantity and sizes of crystals generated during the bacterial mineralization process over time to improve our understanding of the process. Introduction: Early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains challenging. It has been suggested that abnormal brain iron metabolism leads to excessive iron accumulation in PD, although the mechanism of iron deposition is not yet fully understood. Ferritin and transferrin receptor (TfR) are involved in iron metabolism, and the exosome pathway is one mechanism by which ferritin is transported and regulated. While the blood of healthy animals contains a plentiful supply of TfR-positive exosomes, no studies have examined ferritin and TfR in plasma neural-derived exosomes., Methods: Plasma exosomes were obtained from 43 patients with PD and 34 healthy controls. Neural-derived exosomes were isolated with anti-human L1CAM antibody immunoabsorption. Transmission electron microscopy and western blotting were used to identify the exosomes. ELISAs were used to quantify ferritin and TfR levels in plasma neural-derived exosomes of patients with PD and controls. Receivers operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to map the diagnostic accuracy of ferritin and TfR. Independent predictors of the disease were identified using logistic regression models., Results: Neural-derived exosomes exhibited the typical exosomal morphology and expressed the specific exosome marker CD63. Ferritin and TfR levels in plasma neural-derived exosomes were significantly higher in patients with PD than controls (406.46 ± 241.86 vs. 245.62 ± 165.47 ng/μg, P = 0.001 and 1728.94 ± 766.71 vs. 1153.92 ± 539.30 ng/μg, P < 0.001, respectively). There were significant positive correlations between ferritin and TfR levels in plasma neural-derived exosomes in control group, PD group and all the individuals (rs = 0.744, 0.700, and 0.752, respectively). The level of TfR was independently associated with the disease (adjusted odds ratio 1.002; 95% CI 1.000-1.003). ROC performances of ferritin, TfR, and their combination were moderate (0.730, 0.812, and 0.808, respectively). Background: Hepatic arterioportal fistulas (APFs) are common in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Moreover, correlated with poor prognosis, APFs often complicate anti-tumor treatments, including transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)., Aim: To compare the efficacy of ethanol-soaked gelatin sponges (ESG) and microspheres in the management of APFs and their impact on the prognosis of HCC., Methods: Data from patients diagnosed with HCC or hepatic APFs between June 2016 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Furthermore, APFs were embolized with ESG (group E) or microspheres (group M) during TACE. The primary outcomes were disease control rate (DCR) and objective response rate (ORR). The secondary outcomes included immediate and first follow-up APF improvement, overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS)., Results: Altogether, 91 participants were enrolled in the study, comprising 46 in group E and 45 in group M. The DCR was 93.5% and 91.1% in groups E and M, respectively ( P = 0.714). The ORRs were 91.3% and 66.7% in groups E and M, respectively ( P = 0.004). The APFs improved immediately after the procedure in 43 (93.5%) patients in group E and 40 (88.9%) patients in group M ( P = 0.485). After 2 mo, APF improvement was achieved in 37 (80.4%) and 33 (73.3%) participants in groups E and M, respectively ( P = 0.421). The OS was 26.2 ± 1.4 and 20.6 ± 1.1 mo in groups E and M, respectively ( P = 0.004), whereas the PFS was 16.6 ± 1.0 and 13.8 ± 0.7 mo in groups E and M, respectively ( P = 0.012)., Conclusion: Compared with microspheres, ESG embolization demonstrated a higher ORR and longer OS and PFS in patients of HCC with hepatic APFs., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: The authors declare no competing interests., (©The Author(s) 2023. Aim: To examine the associations between serum albumin and the incidences of diabetes and diabetic microvascular complications in participants of the UK Biobank cohort., Methods: There were 398,146 participants without diabetes and 30,952 patients with diabetes from the UK Biobank cohort included in this study. Multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the association of albumin with the incidences of diabetes and diabetic microvascular complications. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to determine the genetic relationships between serum albumin and diabetes., Results: After a median 12.90 years follow-up, 14,710 participants developed incident diabetes (58.83 ± 7.52 years, 56.10% male). After multivariate adjustment, serum albumin was inversely associated with incident diabetes: hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval] per 10 g/l increase 0.88 [0.82;0.94]. MR analyses suggested a potential genetic influence of serum albumin on diabetes in both the UK Biobank and the FinnGen consortium: odds ratios (ORs) [95% confidence interval per 1 g/l increase 0.99 [0.98;1.00] and 0.78 [0.67;0.92], respectively. In patients with diabetes, higher serum albumin levels were significantly associated with lower risk for diabetic microvascular complications. Specifically, per 10 g/l increase in serum albumin, the HRs for diabetic nephropathy, ophthalmopathy, and neuropathy were 0.42 [0.30;0.58], 0.61 [0.52;0.72], and 0.67 [0.51;0.88], respectively., Conclusion: In this large prospective study, serum levels of albumin were inversely associated with the incidences of diabetes and diabetic microvascular complications. Background: It is unknown whether high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) can evaluate invisible subcutaneous lesions. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of HFUS in invisible subcutaneous lesions., Method: Patients with invisible subcutaneous lesions were prospectively recruited from two centres. Before undergoing biopsy or surgery, each lesion was independently evaluated by two clinicians. One provides a clinical diagnosis by only clinical examination and the other provides an integrated diagnosis by combining clinical examination and HFUS information. Diagnoses were classified as correct, wrong, and indeterminate. A total of 391 lesions from 355 patients were enrolled, including 225 epidermoid cysts, 77 lipomas, 25 pilomatrixomas, 21 haemangiomas, 19 dermatofibromas, 11 dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), 7 neurofibromas, and 6 leiomyomas. Using pathological results as the gold standard, diagnostic performance was compared., Results: The number of correct diagnoses increased from 185 (47.3%) by clinical examination alone to 316 (80.8%) after the addition of HFUS (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the indeterminate diagnosis rate decreased from 143 (36.6%) to 10 (2.6%). Using HFUS, the accuracy improved significantly for epidermoid cysts (59.6% vs. 86.7%), lipomas (50.6% vs. 94.8%), pilomatrixomas (0% vs. 48.0%), haemangiomas (23.8% vs. 57.1%), and DFSPs (0% vs. 81.8%) (all p < 0.05). However, HFUS did not significantly improve the diagnostic accuracy of dermatofibromas (15.8% vs. 21.1%, p > 0.999), neurofibromas (42.9% vs. 71.4%, p = 0.625), or leiomyomas (16.7% vs. 100%, p = 0.063)., Conclusion: Combining HFUS and clinical examination can generally improve the diagnostic accuracy and decrease the indeterminacy of invisible subcutaneous lesions, especially epidermoid cysts, lipomas, pilomatrixomas, haemangiomas, and DFSPs. Objectives: This study was aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound (US) in differentiating trichilemmal cysts (TCs) from epidermoid cysts (ECs)., Methods: Based on clinical and ultrasound features, a prediction model was established and validated. 164 cysts in the pilot cohort and another 69 in the validation cohort diagnosed with TCs or ECs histopathologically were evaluated. The same radiologist performed all ultrasound examinations., Results: For clinic features, TCs tended to occur in females compared with ECs (66.7 vs 28.5%; P < .001). In addition, TCs were prone to occur in the hairy area compared with ECs (77.8 vs 13.1%; P < .001). For ultrasound features, the internal hyperechogenicity and cystic change were more likely to appear in TCs in comparison with ECs (92.6 vs 25.5%; P < .001; 70.4 vs 23.4%; P < .001, respectively). Upon the features mentioned above, a prediction model was established with the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.936 and 0.864 in the pilot and validation cohorts, respectively., Conclusions: US is promising for differentiating TCs from ECs and is valuable for their clinical management., (© 2023 American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.)
