Abstract: This White Paper presents an overview of the current status and future perspective of QCD research, based on the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the 2022 Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting. We present the progress made in the last decade toward a deep understanding of both the fundamental structure of the sub-atomic matter of nucleon and nucleus in cold QCD, and the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions. We identify key questions of QCD research and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions in the near future, hence defining priorities of our research over the coming decades.

Abstract: We develop an in-situ index of refraction profile using the transit time of radio signals broadcast from an englacial transmitter to 2-5 km distant radio-frequency receivers, deployed at depths up to 200 m. Maxwell's equations generally admit two ray propagation solutions from a given transmitter, corresponding to a direct path (D) and a refracted path (R); the measured D vs. R (dt(D,R)) timing differences provide constraints on the index of refraction profile near South Pole, where the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) neutrino observatory is located. We constrain the refractive index profile by simulating D and R ray paths via ray tracing and comparing those to measured dt(D,R) signals. Using previous ice density data as a proxy for n(z), we demonstrate that our data strongly favors a glaciologically-motivated three-phase densification model rather than a single exponential scale height model. Simulations show that the single exponential model overestimates ARA neutrino sensitivity compared to the three-phase model.

3. Prediction of Fishbone Linear Instability in Tokamaks with Machine Learning Methods

Abstract: A machine learning based surrogate model for fishbone linear instability in tokamaks is constructed. Hybrid simulations with the kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code M3D-K is used to generate the database of fishbone linear instability, through scanning the four key parameters which are thought to determine the fishbone physics. The four key parameters include (1) central total beta of both thermal plasma and fast ions, (2) the fast ion pressure fraction, (3) central value of safety factor $q$ and (4) the radius of $q=1$ surface. Four machine learning methods including linear regression, support vector machines (SVM) with linear kernel, SVM with nonlinear kernel and multi-layer perceptron are used to predict the fishbone instability, growth rate and real frequency, mode structure respectively. Among the four methods, SVM with nonlinear kernel performs very well to predict the linear instability with accuracy $\approx$95%, growth rate and real frequency with $R^2\approx$98%, mode structure with $R^2\approx$98%., Comment: 28 pages,19 figures

5. Generating scalable graph states in an atom-nanophotonic interface

Abstract: Scalable graph states are essential for measurement-based quantum computation and many entanglement-assisted applications in quantum technologies. Generation of these multipartite entangled states requires a controllable and efficient quantum device with delicate design of generation protocol. Here we propose to prepare high-fidelity and scalable graph states in one and two dimensions, which can be tailored in an atom-nanophotonic cavity via state carving technique. We propose a systematic protocol to carve out unwanted state components, which facilitates scalable graph states generations via adiabatic transport of a definite number of atoms in optical tweezers. An analysis of state fidelity is also presented, and the state preparation probability can be optimized via multiqubit state carvings and sequential single-photon probes. Our results showcase the capability of an atom-nanophotonic interface for creating graph states and pave the way toward novel problem-specific applications using scalable high-dimensional graph states with stationary qubits., Comment: 5 figures with supplemental material

6. Atomic excitation delocalization at the clean to disordered interface in a chirally-coupled atomic array

Abstract: In one-dimensional quantum emitter systems, the dynamics of atomic excitations are influenced by the collective coupling between emitters through photon-mediated dipole-dipole interactions. By introducing positional disorders in a portion of the atomic array, we investigate the delocalization phenomena at the interface between disordered zone and clean zone. The excitation is initialized as symmetric Dicke states in the disordered zone, and several measures are used to quantify the excitation localization. We first use population imbalance and half-chain entropy to investigate the excitation dynamics under time evolutions, and further investigate the crossover of excitation localization to delocalization via the gap ratio from the eigenspectrum in the reciprocal coupling case. In particular, we study the participation ratio of the whole chain and the photon loss ratio between both ends of the atomic chain, which can be used to quantify the delocalization crossover in the non-reciprocal coupling cases. Furthermore, by increasing the overall size or the ratio of the disordered zone under a fixed number of the whole chain, we observe that excitation localization occurs at a smaller disorder strength in the former case, while in the latter, a facilitation of the delocalization appears when a significant ratio of clean zone to disordered zone is applied. Our results can reveal the competition between the clean zone and the disordered zone sizes on localization phenomenon, give insights to non-equilibrium dynamics in the emitter-waveguide interface, and provide potential applications in quantum information processing.

Abstract: The Askaryan Radio Array Station 1 (A1), the first among five autonomous stations deployed for the ARA experiment at the South Pole, is a unique ultra-high energy neutrino (UHEN) detector based on the Askaryan effect that uses Antarctic ice as the detector medium. Its 16 radio antennas (distributed across 4 strings, each with 2 Vertically Polarized (VPol), 2 Horizontally Polarized (HPol) receivers), and 2 strings of transmitting antennas (calibration pulsers, CPs), each with 1 VPol and 1 HPol channel, are deployed at depths less than 100 m within the shallow firn zone of the 2.8 km thick South Pole (SP) ice. We apply different methods to calibrate its Ice Ray Sampler second generation (IRS2) chip for timing offset and ADC-to-Voltage conversion factors using a known continuous wave input signal to the digitizer, and achieve a precision of sub-nanoseconds. We achieve better calibration for odd, compared to even samples, and also find that the HPols under-perform relative to the VPol channels. Our timing calibrated data is subsequently used to calibrate the ADC-to-Voltage conversion as well as precise antenna locations, as a precursor to vertex reconstruction. The calibrated data will then be analyzed for UHEN signals in the final step of data compression. The ability of A1 to scan the firn region of SP ice sheet will contribute greatly towards a 5-station analysis and will inform the design of the planned IceCube Gen-2 radio array., Comment: 10 pages

8. High-fidelity Rydberg controlled-Z gates with optimal pulses

Abstract: High-fidelity control-$Z$ ($C_Z$) gates are essential and mandatory to build a large-scale quantum computer. In neutral atoms, the strong dipole-dipole interactions between their Rydberg states make them one of the pioneering platforms to implement $C_Z$ gates. Here we numerically investigate the time-optimal pulses to generate a high-fidelity Rydberg $C_{Z}$ gate in a three-level ladder-type atomic system. By tuning the temporal shapes of Gaussian or segmented pulses, the populations on the intermediate excited states are shown to be suppressed within the symmetric gate operation protocol, which leads to a $C_{Z}$ gate with a high Bell fidelity up to $99.92\%$. These optimized pulses are robust to thermal fluctuations and the excitation field variations. Our results promise a high-fidelity and fast gate operation under amenable and controllable experimental parameters, which goes beyond the adiabatic operation regime under a finite Blockade strength., Comment: 6 figures

Abstract: This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. 11. Plaquette valence bond state in spin-1/2 J1-J2 XY model on square lattice

Abstract: We studied the ground state phase diagram of spin-1/2 J1-J2 XY model on the square lattice with first- J1 and second-neighbor J2 antiferromagnetic interactions using both iDMRG and DMRG approaches. We show that a plaquette valence bond phase is realized in an intermediate region 0.50 <= J2/J1 <= 0.54 between a N\'eel magnetic ordered phase at J2/J1 < 0.50 and a stripy magnetic ordered phase at J2/J1 >= 0.54. The plaquette valence bond phase is characterized by finite dimer orders in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Abstract: This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusionsfrom the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 atMIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long RangePlanning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. Themeeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physicssince the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths toobtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research overthe coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physicsopportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) andlonger term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with thefacilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discoverypotential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. ThisWhite Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail theRecommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the TownMeeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progressand accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, byan overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and inrelation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview ofthe physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devotedto the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion.This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCDresearch.

Abstract: Biomarker detection is the key to identifying health risks. However, designing sensitive biosensors in a single-use mode for disease diagnosis remains a major challenge. Here, we report sub-monolayer biolasers with remarkable repeatability for ultrasensitive and disposable biomarker detection. The biolaser sensors are designed by employing the telecom optical fibers as distributed optical microcavities and pushing the gain molecules down to the sub-monolayer level. We observe a status transition from the monolayer biolaser to the sub-monolayer biolaser by tuning the specific conjugation. By reducing the fluorophores down to the threshold density (~ 3.2 x 10-13 mol/cm2), we demonstrate an ultimate sensitivity of sub-monolayer biolaser with six orders of magnitude enhancement compared with the monolayer biolasers. We further achieved ultrasensitive immunoassay for Parkinson's disease biomarker, alpha-synuclein, with a lower limit of detection of 0.32 pM in serum. This biosensor with massive fabrication capability at ultralow cost provides a general method for the ultrasensitive disposable biodetection of disease biomarkers., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: We present the analysis of two-particle angular correlations using coordinate systems defined with the conventional beam axis and the event thrust axis, and propose the latter to be a useful representation for the correlation structure interpretation in the $e^+ e^-$ collision system. The $e^+ e^-$ collisions to hadronic final states at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$ GeV and $10.58$ GeV are recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. In this paper, results on the first dataset are supplementary to the previous Belle publication arXiv:2201.01694 while the latter one is the first two-particle correlation measurement at a collision energy on the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and sensitive to its decay products. Measurements are reported as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. Finally, a qualitative understanding of the correlation structure is discussed using a combination of Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data., Comment: Submitted to JHEP. 32 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: In the pursuit of the measurement of the still-elusive ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino flux at energies of order EeV, detectors using the in-ice Askaryan radio technique have increasingly targeted lower trigger thresholds. This has led to improved trigger-level sensitivity to UHE neutrinos. Working with data collected by the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA), we search for neutrino candidates at the lowest threshold achieved to date, leading to improved analysis-level sensitivities. A neutrino search on a data set with 208.7~days of livetime from the reduced-threshold fifth ARA station is performed, achieving a 68\% analysis efficiency over all energies on a simulated mixed-composition neutrino flux with an expected background of $0.10_{-0.04}^{+0.06}$ events passing the analysis. We observe one event passing our analysis and proceed to set a neutrino flux limit using a Feldman-Cousins construction. We show that the improved trigger-level sensitivity can be carried through an analysis, motivating the Phased Array triggering technique for use in future radio-detection experiments. We also include a projection using all available data from this detector. Finally, we find that future analyses will benefit from studies of events near the surface to fully understand the background expected for a large-scale detector., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high-multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. In this study, the $89.5~{\text{fb}}^{-1}$ of hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured in the full relative azimuthal angle ($\Delta \phi$) and three units of pseudorapidity ($\Delta \eta$), defined by either the electron beam axis or the event-shape thrust axis, and are studied as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. The measurement in the thrust axis analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant anisotropic collective behavior is observed with either coordinate analyses. Near-side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and are expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low-energy regime., Comment: Submitted to Phys. 18. Resonant Dipole-Dipole Interactions in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Abstract: Resonant dipole-dipole interaction (RDDI) is ubiquitous in light-matter interacting systems and is responsible for many fascinating properties of collective radiations. Here we theoretically investigate the role of RDDI in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The resonant dipole-dipole interactions manifest in the cooperative spontaneous emission of the probe light transition, which give rise a broadened linewidth and associated collective frequency shift. This cooperative linewidth originates from the nonlocal and long-range RDDI, which can be determined by the atomic density, optical depth, and macroscopic length scales of the atomic ensemble. We present that EIT spectroscopy essentially demonstrates all-order multiple scattering of RDDI. Furthermore, we find that EIT transparency window becomes narrower as the cooperative linewidth increases, which essentially reduces the storage efficiency of slow light as EIT-based quantum memory application., Comment: 4 figures

Abstract: A study of initial-state gluon radiation (ISR) in hadron collisions is presented using Drell-Yan (DY) events produced in proton-antiproton collisions by the Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This paper adopts a novel approach which uses the mean value of the Z/$\gamma^*$ transverse momentum $$ in DY events as a powerful observable to characterize the effect of ISR. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CDF Run II detector, $$ is measured as a function of the Z/$\gamma^*$ invariant mass. It is found that these two observables have a dependence, $ = -8 + 2.2 \ln m_{DY}^2$ [GeV/c], where $m_{DY}$ is the value of the Z/$\gamma^*$ mass measured in units of GeV/$c^2$. This linear dependence is observed for the first time in this analysis. It may be exploited to model the effect of ISR and constrain its impact in other processes., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino ($e\nu$) pairs are produced predominantly in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow W(\rightarrow e\nu) + X$. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the $u$- to $d$-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001--2011 and corresponding to 9.1~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Abstract: We report on the first measurement of the direct $CP$-violating asymmetry ($\mathcal{A}$) in the charmless decay $B^0 \to K^0\pi^0$ at Belle II and an updated measurement of its branching fraction ($\mathcal{B}$). We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $62.8$ $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We reconstruct and select about $50$ $B^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0$ candidates, and we measure $\mathcal{A}_{{K^0\pi^0}} = -0.40_{-0.44}^{+0.46} (\text{stat}) \pm 0.04 (\text{syst})$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^0 \pi^0) = [8.5_{-1.6}^{+1.7} (\text{stat}) \pm 1.2 (\text{syst})] \times 10^{-6}$. This is the first measurement of $CP$ violation in $B^0 \to K^0\pi^0$ decays reported by Belle II. Abstract: We recall evidence that long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have binary progenitors and give new examples. Binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe) consist of a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{\rm core}$) and a neutron star (NS) companion. For binary periods $\sim 5$ min, the CO$_{\rm core}$ collapse originates the subclass BdHN I characterized by: 1) an energetic supernova (the "SN-rise"); 2) a black hole (BH), born from the NS collapse by SN matter accretion, leading to a GeV emission with luminosity $L_{\rm GeV} = A_{\rm GeV}\,t^{-\alpha_{\rm GeV}}$, observed only in some cases; 3) a new NS ($\nu$NS), born from the SN, originating the X-ray afterglow with $L_X = A_{\rm X}\,t^{-\alpha_{\rm X}}$, observed in all BdHN I. We record $378$ sources and present for four prototypes GRBs 130427A, 160509A, 180720B and 190114C: 1) spectra, luminosities, SN-rise duration; 2) $A_X$, $\alpha_X=1.48\pm 0.32$, and 3) the $\nu$NS spin time-evolution. We infer a) $A_{\rm GeV}$, $\alpha_{\rm GeV}=1.19 \pm 0.04$; b) the BdHN I morphology from time-resolved spectral analysis, three-dimensional simulations, and the GeV emission presence/absence in $54$ sources within the Fermi-LAT boresight angle. For $25$ sources, we give the integrated and time-varying GeV emission, $29$ sources have no GeV emission detected and show X/gamma-ray flares previously inferred as observed along the binary plane. The $25/54$ ratio implies the GeV radiation is emitted within a cone of half-opening angle $\approx 60^{\circ}$ from the normal to the orbital plane. We deduce BH masses $2.3$-$8.9~M_\odot$ and spin $0.27$-$0.87$ by explaining the GeV emission from the BH energy extraction, while their time evolution validates the BH mass-energy formula., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS on March 5, 2021; in press

Abstract: The proposed IceCube-Gen2 (ICG2) seeks to instrument ~500 sq. km of Antarctic ice near the geographic South Pole with radio antennas, in order to observe the highest energy (E>1 EeV) neutrinos in the Universe. To this end, ICG2 will use the impulsive radio-frequency (RF) signal produced by neutrino interactions in polar ice caps. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously separated from background; to date, signal identification strategies primarily reject thermal noise and anthropogenic backgrounds. Here, we consider the possibility that fake neutrino signals may also be naturally generated via the 'triboelectric effect'. This broadly includes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, generating a potential difference {\Delta}V. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a {\Delta}V, with subsequent discharge. Discharges over nanosecond-timescales can then lead to RF emissions at characteristic MHz-GHz frequencies. We find that such backgrounds are evident in the several neutrino experiments considered, and are generally characterized by: a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental signal trigger threshold and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100-200 MHz), c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

Abstract: We report on first measurements of branching fractions~($\mathcal{B}$) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~($\mathcal{A}$) in charmless $B$ decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance and corresponding to $34.6$\,fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The $\Delta E$ distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in $M_{\rm bc}$, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. Abstract: The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. 29. Observation of two-level critical state in the superconducting FeTe thin films

Abstract: FeTe, a non-superconducting parent compound in the iron-chalcogenide family, becomes superconducting after annealing in oxygen. Under the presence of magnetism, spin-orbit coupling, inhomogeneity and lattice distortion, the nature of its superconductivity is not well understood. Here, we combined mutual inductance technique with magneto transport to study the magnetization and superconductivity of FeTe thin films. We found that the films with the highest Tc showed non-saturating superfluid density and a strong magnetic hysteresis distinct from that in a homogeneous superconductor. Such hysteresis can be well explained by a two-level critical state model and suggested the importance of granularity to superconductivity in this compound.

30. Subradiance dynamics in a singly-excited chiral-coupled atomic chain

Abstract: We theoretically investigate the subradiance dynamics in a nonreciprocal chiral-coupled atomic chain, in which infinite-range dipole-dipole interaction emerges in the dissipation. We find that super- and subradiance are both present in the dissipation process following single photon excitation, and the decay dynamics shows burst emissions from uniform initial excitations, which reflects the influence of atomic ordering on the propagation of light-induced atom-atom correlations. By tuning the nonreciprocal couplings in the chiral-coupled atomic system, we show that the subradiance dynamics can be greatly modified. We further study the effect of atomic local disorder, and find occurrence of plateaus on the decay curve dependent on the defect locations, as well as persistent localized excitations induced by disorders. We also discuss the effect of imperfections of systems on the subradiance dynamics. Abstract: We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard-model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the $\phi$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to $5.4~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for hypothetical $\phi$ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/$c^2$. Abstract: We propose that the "inner engine" of a type I binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) is composed of a Kerr black hole (BH) in a non-stationary state, embedded in a uniform magnetic field $B_0$ aligned with the BH rotation axis, and surrounded by an ionized plasma of extremely low density of $10^{-14}$~g~cm$^{-3}$. Using GRB 130427A as a prototype we show that this "inner engine" acts in a sequence of "elementary impulses". Electrons are accelerated to ultra-relativistic energy near the BH horizon and, propagating along the polar axis, $\theta =0$, they can reach energies of $\sim 10^{18}$ eV, and partially contribute to ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). When propagating with ${\theta \neq 0}$ through the magnetic field $B_0$ they give origin by synchrotron emission to GeV and TeV radiation. The mass of BH, $M=2.3 M_\odot$, its spin, $\alpha = 0.47$, and the value of magnetic field $B_0= 3.48 \times 10^{10}$ G, are determined self-consistently in order to fulfill the energetic and the transparency requirement. The repetition time of each elementary impulse of energy ${\cal E} \sim 10^{37}$ erg, is $\sim 10^{-14}$ s at the beginning of the process, then slowly increasing with time evolution. In principle, this "\textit{inner engine}" can operate in a GRB for thousands of years. Abstract: We motivate how the most recent progress in the understanding the nature of the GeV radiation in most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe), has led to the solution of a forty years unsolved problem in relativistic astrophysics: how to extract the rotational energy from a Kerr black hole for powering synchrotron emission and ultra high-energy cosmic rays. The "inner engine" is identified in the proper use of a classical solution introduced by Wald in 1974 duly extended to the most extreme conditions found around the newborn black hole in a BdHN. The energy extraction process occurs in a sequence impulsive processes each accelerating protons to $10^{21}$ eV in a timescale of $10^{-6}$ s and in presence of an external magnetic field of $10^{14}$ G. Specific example is given for a black hole of initial angular momentum $J=0.3\,M^2$ and mass $M\approx 3\,M_\odot$ leading to the GeV radiation of $10^{49}$ erg$\cdot$s$^{-1}$. Abstract: This paper presents a study of the production of a single $W$ boson in association with one or more jets in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, using the entire data set collected in 2001-2011 by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $9.0$ fb$^{-1}$. The $W$ boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the $W(\rightarrow \mu\nu)+$jets cross section to the $W(\rightarrow e\nu)+$jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of $e$-$\mu$ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity ($W+\geqslant N$ jets with $N=1,\,2,\,3, \textrm{or }4$) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: The Collider Detector at Fermilab collected a unique sample of jets originating from bottom-quark fragmentation ($b$-jets) by selecting online proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collisions with a vertex displaced from the $p\bar{p}$ interaction point, consistent with the decay of a bottom-quark hadron. This data set, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$, is used to measure the $Z$-boson production cross section times branching ratio into $b\bar{b}$. The number of $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ events is determined by fitting the dijet-mass distribution while constraining the dominant $b$-jet background, originating from QCD multijet events, with data. The result, $\sigma(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z) \times \mathcal{B}(Z \rightarrow b\bar{b})= 1.11\pm 0.08(\text{stat}) \pm 0.14(\text{syst})~\text{nb}$, is the most precise measurement of this process, and is consistent with the standard-model prediction. The data set is also used to search for Higgs-boson production. No significant signal is expected in our data and the first upper limit on the cross section for the inclusive $p\bar p \rightarrow H\rightarrow b\bar b$ process at $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV is set, corresponding to 33 times the expected standard-model cross section, or $\sigma = 40.6$ pb, at the 95\% confidence level.

Abstract: X-ray Flashes (XRFs), binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe) are long GRB subclasses with progenitor a CO$_{\rm core}$, undergoing a supernova (SN) explosion and hypercritically accreting in a tight binary system onto a companion neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH). In XRFs the NS does not reach by accretion the critical mass and no BH is formed. In BdHNe I, with shorter binary periods, the NS gravitationally collapses and leads to a new born BH. In BdHNe II the accretion on an already formed BH leads to a more massive BH. We assume that the GeV emission observed by \textit{Fermi}-LAT originates from the rotational energy of the BH. Consequently, we verify that, as expected, in XRFs no GeV emission is observed. In $16$ BdHNe I and $5$ BdHNe II, within the boresight angle of LAT, the integrated GeV emission allows to estimate the initial mass and spin of the BH. In the remaining $27$ sources in the plane of the binary system no GeV emission occurs, hampered by the presence of the HN ejecta. From the ratio, $21/48$, we infer a new asymmetric morphology for the BdHNe reminiscent of the one observed in active galactic nuclei (AGN): the GeV emission occurs within a cone of half-opening angle $\approx 60^{\circ}$ from the normal to the orbital plane of the binary progenitor. The transparency condition requires a Lorentz factor $\Gamma \sim 1500$ on the source of GeV emission. The GeV luminosity in the rest-frame of the source follows a universal power-law with index of $-1.20 \pm 0.04$, allowing to estimate the spin-down rate of the BH, Comment: 17 pages

Abstract: It has recently become clear that in both short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) it coexists a sequence of different events, each characterized by specific physical processes and corresponding values of the Lorentz gamma factors. The ultra-relativistic prompt emission (UPE) phase, with Lorentz factor $\Gamma\leq10^4$, is followed by a mildly relativistic plateau-afterglow phase with $\Gamma\lesssim2$. The GeV radiation, with $\Gamma\lesssim50$, coexists with the above two phases. It is shown that: a) the GeV radiation originates at the onset of the formation of a black hole (BH), b) its luminosity follows specific power-law dependence when measured in the rest frame of the source with a decay index $\gamma=-1.29\pm0.06$ in the case of the short GRBs, and $\gamma=-1.20\pm0.04$ in the case of the long GRBs, c) these energetics requirements are used to derive the mass and spin of the BH originating this extended GeV emission. We present these conceptual results for the case of short GRBs in this article and give the extended analysis for long GRBs in a companion article. A direct astrophysical application of these results is that the merger of binary neutron stars leading to BH formation emits GeV radiation: the GeV emission is a necessary and sufficient condition to indicate the creation of a BH in S-GRBs., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Abstract: The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is a five-year optical imaging campaign with the goal of understanding the origin of cosmic acceleration. DES performs a 5000 square degree survey of the southern sky in five optical bands (g,r,i,z,Y) to a depth of ~24th magnitude. Contemporaneously, DES performs a deep, time-domain survey in four optical bands (g,r,i,z) over 27 square degrees. DES exposures are processed nightly with an evolving data reduction pipeline and evaluated for image quality to determine if they need to be retaken. Difference imaging and transient source detection are also performed in the time domain component nightly. On a bi-annual basis, DES exposures are reprocessed with a refined pipeline and coadded to maximize imaging depth. Here we describe the DES image processing pipeline in support of DES science, as a reference for users of archival DES data, and as a guide for future astronomical surveys.

42. Cooperative light scattering from helical-phase-imprinted atomic rings

Abstract: We theoretically investigate the light scattering of the super- and subradiant states which can be prepared by the excitation of a single photon which carries an orbital angular momentum (OAM).\ With this helical phase imprinted on the stacked ring of atomic arrays, the subradiant modes show directional side scattering in the far-field, allowing for light collimation and quantum storage of light with OAM.\ For the excitations with linear polarizations, we find a discrete $C_4$ rotational symmetry in scattering for the number of atoms $N$ $=$ $4n $ with integers $n$, while for circular polarizations with arbitrary $N$, the azimuthal and $C_N$ symmetries emerge for the super- and subradiant modes respectively.\ When the radial and azimuthal polarizations are considered, a mode shift can happen in the scattering pattern.\ The forward scattering of the superradiant modes can be enhanced as we stack up the rings along the excitation direction, and for the subradiant modes, we find the narrowing effects on the scattering in the azimuthal and the polar angles when more concentric rings are added in the radial direction.\ By designing the atomic spatial distributions and excitation polarizations, helical-phase-imprinted subradiant states can tailor and modify the radiation properties, which is detectable in the directional super- and subradiant emissions and is potentially useful in quantum information manipulations., Comment: 8 figures

Abstract: We analyze GRB 151027A within the binary-driven hypernova (BdHN) approach, with progenitor a carbon-oxygen core on the verge of a supernova (SN) explosion and a binary companion neutron star (NS). The hypercritical accretion of the SN ejecta onto the NS leads to its gravitational collapse into a black hole (BH), to the emission of the GRB and to a copious $e^+e^-$ plasma. The impact of this $e^+e^-$ plasma on the SN ejecta explains {the} early soft X-ray flare observed in long GRBs. We here apply this approach to the UPE and to the hard X-ray flares. We use GRB 151027A as a prototype. From the time-integrated and the time-resolved analysis we identify a double component in the UPE and confirm its ultra-relativistic nature. We confirm the mildly-relativistic nature of the soft X-ray flare, of the hard X-ray flare and of the ETE. We show that the ETE identifies the transition from a SN to the HN. We then address the theoretical justification of these observations by integrating the hydrodynamical propagation equations of the $e^+ e^-$ into the SN ejecta, the latter independently obtained from 3D smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics simulations. We conclude that the UPE, the hard X-ray flare and the soft X-ray flare do not form a causally connected sequence: Within our model they are the manifestation of \textbf{the same} physical process of the BH formation as seen through different viewing angles, implied by the morphology and the $\sim 300$~s rotation period of the HN ejecta., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Abstract: We analyze the early X-ray flares in the GRB "flare-plateau-afterglow" (FPA) phase observed by Swift-XRT. The FPA occurs only in one of the seven GRB subclasses: the binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe). This subclass consists of long GRBs with a carbon-oxygen core and a neutron star (NS) binary companion as progenitors. The hypercritical accretion of the supernova (SN) ejecta onto the NS can lead to the gravitational collapse of the NS into a black hole. Consequently, one can observe a GRB emission with isotropic energy $E_{iso}\gtrsim10^{52}$~erg, as well as the associated GeV emission and the FPA phase. Previous work had shown that gamma-ray spikes in the prompt emission occur at $\sim 10^{15}$--$10^{17}$~cm with Lorentz gamma factor $\Gamma\sim10^{2}$--$10^{3}$. Using a novel data analysis we show that the time of occurrence, duration, luminosity and total energy of the X-ray flares correlate with $E_{iso}$. A crucial feature is the observation of thermal emission in the X-ray flares that we show occurs at radii $\sim10^{12}$~cm with $\Gamma\lesssim 4$. These model independent observations cannot be explained by the "fireball" model, which postulates synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation from a single ultra relativistic jetted emission extending from the prompt to the late afterglow and GeV emission phases. We show that in BdHNe a collision between the GRB and the SN ejecta occurs at $\simeq10^{10}$~cm reaching transparency at $\sim10^{12}$~cm with $\Gamma\lesssim4$. The agreement between the thermal emission observations and these theoretically derived values validates our model and opens the possibility of testing each BdHN episode with the corresponding Lorentz gamma factor., Comment: 57 pages, 40 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ

Abstract: A measurement of the inclusive production cross section of isolated prompt photons in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$=1.96TeV is presented. The results are obtained using the full Run II data sample collected with the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.5fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured as a function of photon transverse energy, $E_T^{\gamma}$, in the range 30$ < E_T^{\gamma} <$500GeV and in the pseudorapidity region $|\eta^{\gamma}|<$1.0. The results are compared with predictions from parton-shower Monte Carlo models at leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. 48. Effects of hydrogen isotope species on ITG microturbulence in LHD.

Abstract: The linear and nonlinear effects of hydrogen isotope species on ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability in the Large Helical Device (LHD) stellarator are studied using radially global gyrokinetic simulation. We found that the coupling range of linear toroidal harmonics depends on the ion mass of the hydrogen isotope. The growth rates of ITG mode are almost the same for H, D, and T plasmas, indicating a gyro-Bohm scaling of ion-mass dependence. The nonlinear electrostatic simulations show that the zonal flow breaks the radially elongated eigenmode structures and reduces the size of the turbulence eddies, which suppresses the turbulence and the ion heat transport in the LHD. The turbulence amplitude without the zonal flow is almost the same for H, D, and T plasmas, while it decreases with increasing ion mass of the hydrogen isotope when the zonal flow is present. The reduction of the turbulent transport with larger ion mass is mostly due to the enhancement of zonal flows by larger ion mass. The ion heat conductivity deviates from the gyro-Bohm scaling for both cases with and without the zonal flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This article presents a study on the synthesis and character of a new organic-inorganic hybrid [4FBzTPP]2[CuBr4] (1) ([4FBzTPP]+ is 4-fluorobenzyltriphenylphosphinium) by XRD, SEM, FTIR and UV-Vis. The XRD analysis showed that the hybrid 1 belongs to the triclinic space group P21 with b = 8.8600(10) Å, c = 16.4867(17) Å, α = 16.639(2)°, β = 96.342(4)°, V = 2415.6(5) Å3, and Z = 2. The hybrid consists of two [4FBzTPP]+ cations and one [CuBr4]2– anion, and the [CuBr4]2– exhibits a twisted tetrahedral coordination geometry with the average bond length between Cu–Br is 2.393 Å. The 3D network structure of 1 is formed by electrostatic terms and other intermolecular interactions. The hybrid material undergoes a direct optical transition and has energy gap values of 1.66 eV and 2.18 eV, indicating its potential as a semiconductor material for optical research.
