[Objective] In order to study the effects of geosynclinal ventilation on the temperature of tall bungalow warehouse. [Methods] The numerical simulation software COMSOL was used to conduct numerical simulation of temperature field under mechanical ventilation for 96 h for tall bungalow warehouse with size of 60 m×24 m and loading height of 6 m. By establishing the mass conservation equation, momentum conservation equation and energy conservation equation, the variation of temperature field in the warehouse under different ventilation modes was analyzed, and the numerical simulation of different unit ventilation conditions was extended. [Results] After mechanical ventilation for 36 h, most of the grain pile below the grain line in the warehouse had dropped to 15 ℃, and after mechanical ventilation for 96 h, the temperature of the grain pile had dropped to below 15 ℃, the grain layer temperature at the distance of 1~6 m from the bottom of the warehouse all dropped below 15.2 ℃. By changing the unit ventilation rate [q=3 m3/(h·t) to q=8 m3/(h·t)], the cooling rate of the grain pile became faster. [Conclusion] The temperature of the grain pile decreases gradually from the bottom of the bin and spreads in an arc shape under the geosynclinal ventilation condition. The grain layer 1 m and 2 m away from the bottom of the warehouse is affected by the fluctuation of external environment temperature, and the temperature gradually decreased in the fluctuation. With the increase of the distance between the grain layer and the bottom of the warehouse, the temperature fluctuation gradually disappears. The temperature change of grain pile in the bin appears a certain lag, and the cooling rate of grain layer temperature decreases with the increasing distance from the bottom of the bin, and the increase of the unit ventilation rate makes the grain pile get better cooling effect.

Objective·To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and malignant tumors based on the Shanghai community elderly cohort.Methods·The study subjects were selected from the Shanghai community elderly cohort established from February to August 2019, with a total of 17 948 people. The study subjects were divided into 4 groups according to self-reported presence or absence of tumors and/or cardiovascular diseases during the baseline survey: tumor-free and non-cardiovascular disease group, single cardiovascular disease group, single tumor group and tumor cardiovascular disease co-occurrence group. The differences among the four groups of subjects were collected and compared in terms of demographic characteristics and physiological indicators, daily living habits (smoking, drinking tea, drinking coffee, drinking carbonated drink, drinking alcohol, sedentary time, physical activity level and sleep quality), past medical history, psychological status (depression and anxiety) and dietary compliance.Results·Among the study subjects, 60.1% of tumor patients were complicated with cardiovascular diseases. With the increasing moisture content of oil and gas in the main block and the further development of unconventional oil and gas resources，the amount of wastewater associated with oil and gas exploitation is increasing. Due to the continuous evolution of oil and gas extraction technology，wastewater quality exhibits characteristics of high oil content and strong emulsification stability，high suspended solids content and reduced suspended solids density. The removal of emulsified oil，dispersed oil and light suspended solids has become a key step in the treatment of oily wastewater. In this paper，the principles and influencing factors of coagulation and air flotation for oil removal were summarized. The research status of coagulation and air flotation systems were reviewed，including research progress on the generation of air flotation bubbles，the structure of air flotation tanks，and the coupling process of air flotation. On this basis，combining the swirl field with the eddy current field，and strengthening the degumming and coalescence separation efficiency of the composite functional pharmaceutical system in the eddy current field was proposed. The development and application of the coagulation air flotation reaction system integrating oxidation，degumming，flocculation，air flotation and separation would be the development trend of oil and gas field wastewater treatment in the future.

Abstract Background Core stability exercise (CSE) is a globally acknowledged intervention for managing chronic low back pain. However, the sustained adherence of patients with chronic low back pain to CSE can be challenging, mainly due to the absence of supervision and guidance from physical therapists during home-based exercise sessions. Consequently, exercise compliance tends to decline, resulting in suboptimal long-term effectiveness of the intervention. In this trial, our primary aim is to evaluate the potential therapeutic equivalence between home-based rehabilitation training employing key point identification technology and exercise guidance administered in a hospital setting. Methods In this trial, we will randomly assign 104 adults with chronic low back pain (CLBP) to either an intervention or control group, with 52 participants in each group. Both interventions will consist of three weekly 0.5-h sessions of core stability exercise (CSE). The intervention group will engage in home rehabilitation training utilizing key identification technology for movement, while the control group will perform supervised exercises in a hospital setting. Outcome assessments will be conducted at 4 weeks and 16 weeks after randomization. The primary outcome measure will be the change in pain intensity based on numeric rating scale (NRS scores) from baseline to 4 weeks. Secondary outcomes will include changes in physical function (measured by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI)) and lumbar spine mobility as well as activity participation and treatment satisfaction. Discussion If home-based rehabilitation method is demonstrated to be non-inferior or even superior to traditional face-to-face exercise guidance, it could significantly advance the adoption of digital medical care and contribute to improving the overall health of the population. Background Insufficient physical activity is one of the most important public health problems in the 21st century and studies have found an association between physical activity and mortality. The effect of physical activity on mortality risk has attracted much attention in recent years, but few studies have reported the relationship between physical activity and all-cause mortality risk in different populations. Objective To explore the relationship between physical activity and all-cause mortality risk in middle-aged and older adults (45 years old and above) in China. Methods Based on the data of China Health and Retirement Tracking Survey (CHARLS) from 2011 to 2018, a total of 2 799 middle-aged and older adults from the 2011 baseline population of the CHARLS were selected as the research subjects on September 10, 2022, their baseline data such as demographic variables, lifestyle variables, and number of chronic diseases were collected, and physical activity level was evaluated based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) as low level physical activity〔600 metabolic equivalent (MET) /week) 〕, moderate level of physical activity (600-3 000 MET/week), high level of physical activity (3 000 MET/week). The follow-up period was from 2011 to 2018, and data from 2013, 2015 and 2018 were selected for follow-up, with all-cause death as the endpoint event, and the subjects were divided into the survival group (n=2 424) and all-cause death group (n=375) according to their survival status. Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to analyze the relationship between physical activity level and all-cause mortality risk in middle-aged and older adults, sensitivity analysis and stratification analysis were also performed. Results During the 7-year follow-up, 375 cases of all-cause death occurred among 2 799 middle-aged and older adults with the incidence of all-cause death of 13.40%. Objective To study the effectiveness of human magnetic induction analyzer in screening gastric diseases. Methods Totally 112 patients with gastroduodenal diseases admitted to the inpatient department from March 2023 to May 2023 were examined using a human magnetic induction analyzer. After explanation and written consent, the detection effect was evaluated based on the clinical diagnostic results of gastroscopy and/or pathological tissue. Results The detection rates of various gastric diseases by the human magnetic induction analyzer were 88.89% for gastritis, 66.67% for gastric ulcer, 60% for duodenal inflammatory response, and 66.67% for duodenal ulcer respectively. The sensitivity of the human magnetic induction analyzer detection was 88.89%, the specificity was 100.0% and the compliance rate was 88.99%. Conclusions The human magnetic induction analyzer has the advantages of easy and time saving, non-invasive with high safety, sensitivity and consistency. It can be widely used for the preliminary screening of gastroduodenal diseases.

Objective To investigate the effect of multifunction lower limb function training device in patients undergoing lower extremity orthopedic surgery. Methods Totally 122 patients undergoing lower extremity orthopedic surgery were randomly divided into the study group(n=62) and control group (n=60). The control group received routine postoperative function training guided by verbal guidance and demonstration, and the multifunction lower limb function training device was used for postoperative function training in the study group. The incidence of deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremity (DVT), degree of patient satisfaction, qualified rate of function training and incidences of other lower limb complications were compared between groups. Results The incidence of DVT in the study group was lower than that in the control group (P＜0. 05). The qualified rate of function training in the study group were higher than that in the control group (P＜0. 05). Conclusion The self-designed multifunction lower limb function training device can promote effective lower-limb training for patients undergoing lower extremity orthopedic surgery and reduce the risk of DVT after surgery. miRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules which serve as promising biomarkers due to their important roles in the development and progression of various cancer types. The detection of miRNAs is of vital importance to the early-stage diagnostics and prognostics of multiple diseases. However, traditional detection strategies have faced some challenges owing to the intrinsic characteristics of miRNAs including small size, short sequence length, low concentration level and high sequence homology in complex real samples. To overcome these challenges, we proposed a MXene-enhanced plasmonic biosensor for real-time and label-free detection of miRNA. By utilizing MXene nanomaterial which possesses unique characteristics including large surface area and strong carrier confinement abilities, we tuned the absorption of our plasmonic sensing substrate to reach a “zero-reflection” state and induced an extremely sharp phase change at the resonance angle. Combined with the sensing mechanism based on phase-induced lateral displacement measurement, this MXene-enhanced plasmonic biosensor can achieve a much superior sensing performance compared to traditional SPR devices. Based on this biosensing scheme, the ultrasensitive detection of target miRNA with a detection limit down to 10 fM has been successfully demonstrated. More importantly, single-base mismatched miRNA can be easily distinguished from the target miRNA according to the sensing signal. Furthermore, our plasmonic biosensor is capable of detecting miRNA in complex media such as 100 % human serum samples without compromising the detection sensitivity. This MXene-enhanced plasmonic sensing scheme has the ability of detecting miRNAs with extremely low concentration levels in complex surrounding media without the need of introducing extra labels or amplification tags, which holds great potential in various biological applications and clinical diagnostics.

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is an important tool for understanding disease pathophysiology, including airway diseases. Currently, the majority of scRNA-seq studies in airway diseases have used invasive methods (airway biopsy, surgical resection), which carry inherent risks and thus present a major limitation to scRNA-seq investigation of airway pathobiology. Bronchial brushing, where the airway mucosa is sampled using a cytological brush, is a viable, less invasive method of obtaining airway cells for scRNA-seq. Here we describe the development of a rapid and minimal handling protocol for preparing single-cell suspensions from bronchial brush specimens for scRNA-seq. Our optimized protocol maximizes cell recovery and cell quality and facilitates large-scale profiling of the airway transcriptome at single-cell resolution.

PurposeA retrospective cohort study was performed to determine the effect of nerve block on the incidence of postoperative mortality in patients with hip replacement.MethodsAccording to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, patients who were undergoing hip replacement for the first time under general or intraspinal anesthesia, classified as ASA class I–IV, and aged ≥65 years were selected. We collected the general data, past medical history, preoperative laboratory test results, perioperative fluid intake and outflow data, perioperative anesthesia and related drug data, postoperative laboratory results, and correlation time index. Patients with preoperative combined nerve block were included in the N group, and those without combined nerve block were included in the NN group. The patients were followed up via telephone call to assess survival outcomes at 3 years after surgery. Propensity score matching and uni- and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the influence of nerve block and other related factors on postoperative mortality.ResultsA total of 743 patients were included in this study, including 262 in the N group and 481 in the NN group. Two hundred five patients in both groups remained after propensity score matching. Main result: Preoperative nerve block was associated with reduced mortality three years after surgery.ConclusionNerve block reduces the incidence of 3-year postoperative mortality, and composite nerve block with general anesthesia and neuraxial anesthesia is worthy of promotion.

Background Stroke is a cardiovascular disease that seriously endangers human health, which is characterized by high prevalence, disability and mortality rates. Peony bark is the dried root bark of peony in the buttercup family, which has the effect of clearing heat and cooling blood, activating blood circulation and resolving blood stasis. Paeonol (PAE) is the main active ingredient of peony bark, has been confirmed to have neuroprotective effect under hypoglycemia and hypoxia conditions. Objective To observe the effect and neurobiological mechanism of gastric administration of paeonol solution on improving behavioral dysfunction caused by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) , a kind of stroke, in a mouse model. Methods The study was conducted from December 2019 to December 2021. Twenty SPF male C57BL/6 mice were randomized into SHAM group (n=10) and model group (MCAO group, n=10) . The MCAO model was formed by intraluminal suture method. After 24 hours of modeling, the neurological function of each group was evaluated by Longa Score. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging was used to monitor the changes of cerebral blood flow after MCAO. TTC staining was used in the pathological examination of cerebral infarction in MCAO mice. For investigating the protective effect of PAE on behavioural dysfunction of MCAO mice, 50 SPF male C57BL/6 mice were randomly grouped into SHAM group (n=10) , model+corn oil group (n=20) , and model+PAE group (n=20) . After the verification of model stability at 24 hours following the modeling, the model+PAE group received intragastric administration of PAE and corn oil solution in a concentration of 100 mg·kg-1· d-1, and the other two groups were gavaged with equal amounts of corn oil. Then on the 28th day after of modelling, survival curve was plotted to assess the survival status of mice in the three groups; the neurological recovery of mice was determined using the Longa Score; the area of cerebral infarction was examined by Nissl staining. The behavioural changes in motor sensory function were tested at five time points: the day before modeling, and 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after modelling. For exploring the mechanism of PAE improving behavioural dysfunction in MCAO mice, 30 SPF male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into SHAM group (n=6) , model+corn oil group (n=12) and model+PAE group (n=12) . After verifying the model stability at 24 hours following the modeling, the model+PAE group received intragastric administration of PAE and corn oil solution in a concentration of 100 mg·kg-1· d-1, and the other two groups were gavaged with an equal amount of corn oil. The expression of interleukin 1β (IL-1β) protein in the striatum of mouse brain was measured by Western blotting on the second day after modelling to investigate whether PAE could reduce the inflammatory response in the brain during the acute period. The expression of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the penumbra was measured by immunofluorescence on the 14th day after modelling. Results The 28-day survival rate was 66.47% for the model+corn oil group, and 81.43% for model+PAE group. Objective To explore the effectiveness of free-examination system for clinical trial subjects in hospital clinical trials. Methods Based on the hospital information system, a free-examination system for clinical trial subjects was designed and implemented, and the effects were compared before and after the application of the system. Results After the application of the free-examination system for clinical trial subjects, the number of protocol violations related to examinations and the average time of financial settlement reduced, so the work efficiency and satisfaction of all parties involved in clinical trials were improved compared with those before application. Conclusion For the participants in this clinical trial, the free-examination system is easy to operate and can improve management level and work efficiency of the clinical trial.

Copper can be toxic at very high intracellular concentrations and can inhibit prostate cancer (PCa) progression. Recently, a study reported the mechanism of cuproptosis and the potentially associated genes. However, the function of these cuproptosis-related genes in PCa remains unknown. Based on the RNA sequence and clinical data from public databases, we analyzed the clinical value of cuproptosis-related genes in PCa. DLD, DLAT, PDHA1, and CDKN2A were expressed differently between normal and PCa tissues. The FDX1, LIAS, DLAT, GLS, and CDKN2A genes can affect PCa progression, while PDHA1 and CDKN2A influence the patients’ disease-free survival (DFS) status. The expression of LIAS, LIPT1, DLAT, and PDHB did not alter upon the incidence of PCa in Chinese patients. A constructed regression model showed that FDX1, PDHA1, MTF1, and CDKN2A can be risk factors leading to PCa in both Western and Chinese patients with PCa. The lasso regression model reflected that these genes can affect the patients’ DFS status. Additionally, the cuproptosis-related genes were associated with immune cell infiltration. We also verified the high expression of PDHA1 and CDKN2A, in clinical samples. In conclusion, we identified a novel cuproptosis-related gene signature for predicting the development of PCa.

Objective To evaluate the application of febrile patient triage system in emergency pre-examination and triage of COVID-19 patients. Methods In this study, 132 febrile patients treated at hospital from March 2019 to March 2022 were selected for a retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups: 66 patients in the control group received routine triage management, while another 66 patients in the study group were managed by using a fever triage system. The triage management was evaluated and compared between two groups. Results Ten patients were triaged to receiving high-risk management in the fever clinic, and one suspected COVID-19 case was detected. After screening, there was no confirmed COVID-19 case, missed diagnosis or nosocomial infection occurred, and the diagnostic accuracy was 100. 00%. Food safety problems caused by excessive metals have potential health hazards related to people’s heath. The development of rapid detection technology for heavy metals in food is an effective means to prevent food with excessive heavy metals from entering the market. However, the accuracy and stability of the rapid detection of heavy metals in food is difficult to be guaranteed due to the low limit of the target element and the interference of sample matrix after pretreatment. Adsorption materials could have good accumulation on heavy metals, and are effective to remove the matrix of food, which provides technical support for the realization of rapid detection of heavy metals in food. Based on the analysis and summary of the current research on the application of adsorption materials for detecting heavy metals in food, the advantages and disadvantages of adsorption materials including absorbability and limit of detection were discussed, and the development trend in the future was also prospected.

Background: DNA methylation may be a link between HIV, aging, and the increased risk of lung comorbidities. We investigated whether bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells of people living with HIV (PLWH) demonstrate epigenetic disruptions and advanced epigenetic aging. Methods: BAL cell DNA methylation from 25 PLWH and 16 HIV-uninfected individuals were tested for differential methylation of Alu and LINE-1 sites, markers of aging. We used a weighted gene correlation network analysis to identify HIV- and age-associated co-methylation networks. We tested the effect of HIV on DNA methylation using a robust linear model (false discovery rate < 0.10). Results: The BAL cells of PLWH were marked by global hypomethylation in both Alu and LINE-1 elements. Six co-methylated CpG networks were identified that were significantly associated with age; of these, the red module was significantly differentially methylated in PLWH and enriched pathways (e.g., Ras signaling and T-cell receptors). We identified 6428 CpG sites associated with HIV. Conclusions: We have shown here for the first time that alterations in the DNA methylation of BAL cells in the lung with HIV show a pattern of advanced aging. This study strongly supports that HIV may contribute to an increased the risk of lung comorbidities through the epigenetics of aging.

For the public and stakeholders, it is necessary to demonstrate airworthiness safety of AI-based avionics system in acceptable means of compliance, so as to solve problems of trustworthiness, uncertainty and explainabili-ty of civil aircraft avionics system caused by introducing artificial intelligence/machine learning technology. First of all, the classification and application status of AI-based avionics system are analyzed, and the applicability of exist-ing guidelines and standards are expounded. Then, based on the review of the current research progress, the imple-mentation process and technical details of the certification framework for AI-based avionics system are summarized.Finally, the requirements and implementation methods of the compliance verification of AI-based avionics system in each stage of the whole life cycle are put forward, and the impact of compliance verification on the existing air-worthiness system is evaluated. The study provides the reference for the design and certification of civil aircraft AIbased avionics system.

Currently, the research on the slip instability of rock mass structural planes has not considered the unloading effect during heading. There is relatively little research on the anisotropic structural planes of coal and rock. In order to explore the conditions and influencing factors that trigger the slip of anisotropic structural planes of coal and rock, a mechanical model of anisotropic structural planes is established. A criterion for unlocking slip of anisotropic structural planes under unloading is theoretically derived. A smooth structural plane numerical model is established using universal distinct element code (UDEC) to verify the accuracy of theoretical analysis of the triggering conditions for unlocking the slip of anisotropic structural planes. The influencing factors of unlocking slip of anisotropic structural planes are analyzed. The research results indicate that unlocking slip of anisotropic structural planes of coal and rock is related to the inclination angle of structural planes, internal friction angle, and the ratio of horizontal stress to axial stress. When the horizontal stress is equal to the axial stress, the anisotropic structural plane is always in a locked state without slipping. Increase of axial pressure and horizontal pressure and decrease of internal friction angle will increase the difficulty of unlocking slip on anisotropic structural planes. For downward unlocking slip, when the inclination angle of the structural plane is less than \begin{document}$45^\circ + \dfrac{{{\varphi _{\rm{f}}}}}{2}$\end{document} (\begin{document}$\varphi _{\rm{f}} $\end{document} is internal friction action), its increase will increase the difficulty of unlocking slip. When it is more than \begin{document}$45^\circ + \dfrac{{{\varphi _{\rm{f}}}}}{2}$\end{document}, its increase will reduce the difficulty of unlocking slip. For upward unlocking slip, when the inclination angle of the structural plane is less than \begin{document}$45^\circ - \dfrac{{{\varphi _{\rm{f}}}}}{2}$\end{document} , its increase will increase the difficulty of unlocking slip. When it is more than \begin{document}$45^\circ - \dfrac{{{\varphi _{\rm{f}}}}}{2}$\end{document}, its increase will reduce the difficulty of unlocking slip. For the locked state of structural plane, when the inclination angle of the structural plane is no more than 30°, if the axial stress is greater than the compressive strength, the brittle failure will occur in coal rock combination.

Abstract Background People living with HIV (PLWH) are at increased risk of developing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) independent of cigarette smoking. We hypothesized that dysbiosis in PLWH is associated with epigenetic and transcriptomic disruptions in the airway epithelium. Methods Airway epithelial brushings were collected from 18 COPD + HIV + , 16 COPD − HIV + , 22 COPD + HIV − and 20 COPD – HIV − subjects. The microbiome, methylome, and transcriptome were profiled using 16S sequencing, Illumina Infinium Methylation EPIC chip, and RNA sequencing, respectively. Multi ‘omic integration was performed using Data Integration Analysis for Biomarker discovery using Latent cOmponents. A correlation > 0.7 was used to identify key interactions between the ’omes. Results The COPD + HIV −, COPD −HIV + , and COPD + HIV + groups had reduced Shannon Diversity (p = 0.004, p = 0.023, and p = 5.5e−06, respectively) compared to individuals with neither COPD nor HIV, with the COPD + HIV + group demonstrating the most reduced diversity. Microbial communities were significantly different between the four groups (p = 0.001). Multi ‘omic integration identified correlations between Bacteroidetes Prevotella, genes FUZ, FASTKD3, and ACVR1B, and epigenetic features CpG-FUZ and CpG-PHLDB3. Conclusion PLWH with COPD manifest decreased diversity and altered microbial communities in their airway epithelial microbiome. The reduction in Prevotella in this group was linked with epigenetic and transcriptomic disruptions in host genes including FUZ, FASTKD3, and ACVR1B.

In order to explore the removal effect and degradation mechanism of the reactive black 5 dye in the aerobic granular sludge system. a constant working volume sequential batch reactor (SBR) was set up to cultivate aerobic granular sludge under alternative anaerobic and aerobic operating condition to treat synthetic azo dye wastewater. The removal efficiency of COD, NH4+-N and PO43--P and the removal load of reactive black 5 were measured in the SBR system, and the mechanism of azo dyes was further explored by high through-put sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that the SBR system had a good effect in removing pollutants, the removal rates of COD, NH4+-N and PO43--P reached 90%, 95% and above 95% at the end of culture period, and the removal of azo dye maintained around 0.005 kg·(kg·d)-1. The azo double bond of the reactive black 5 dye mainly broke at the anaerobic stage, and the intermediates containing benzene and naphthalene rings were degraded at the aerobic stage. High-throughput sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that azo dye increased the nitrogen load of the SBR system, thus increasing the abundance of nitrifying bacteria and the bacteria which had the function of denitrifying or degrading aromatic substances genera such as Paracoccus, Azoarcus and Thauera.

Congenital alopecia/hypotrichosis is a rare group of monogenic genetic hair disorders characterized by congenital limited or diffuse hair loss and scarcity, without any effective treatment. Genetic testing to identify the causative gene mutation is the gold standard for confirming the diagnosis of this group of disorders. Because of the heterogeneity in clinical features and genetic pattern of this group of diseases, it is very easy to misdiagnose and mistreat them as diffuse baldness or androgenic alopecia and other acquired alopecia, so clinicians should improve their understanding of this group of diseases. With the continuous development of molecular biology techniques in recent years, a variety of causative genes for congenital alopecia/hypotrichosis have been identified so far, and the pathogenesis of some of these genes and their corresponding subtypes have been clarified. In this paper, we reviewed the clinical manifestations and genetic research progress of non-syndromic congenital alopecia/ hypotrichosis, in order to facilitate clinicians' comprehensive understanding of these rare hair diseases and improve clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Understanding and controlling phase separation in nonequilibrium colloidal systems are of both fundamental and applied importance. In this article, we investigate the spatiotemporal control of phase separation in chemically active immotile colloids. We show that a population of silver colloids can spontaneously phase separate into dense clusters in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) due to phoretic attraction. The characteristic length of the formed pattern was quantified and monitored over time, revealing a growth and coarsening phase with different growth kinetics. By tuning the trigger frequency of light, the lengths and growth kinetics of the clusters formed by silver colloids in H2O2 can be controlled. In addition, structured light was used to precisely control the shape, size, and contour of the phase-separated patterns. This study provides insight into the microscopic details of the phase separation of chemically active colloids induced by phoretic attraction, and presents a generic strategy for controlling the spatiotemporal evolution of the resulting mesoscopic patterns.

The Nile Nyabarongo, which is Rwanda's largest river, is facing stress from both human activities and climate change. These factors have a substantial contribution to the water processes, making it difficult to effectively manage water resources. To address this issue, it is important to find out the most accurate techniques for simulating hydrological processes. This study aimed to calibrate the SWAT model employing various algorithms such as GLUE, ParaSol, and SUFI-2 for the simulation of hydrology in the basin of the Nile Nyabarongo River. Different data sources, such as DEM, Landsat images, soil data, and daily meteorological data, were utilized to input information into the SWAT modeling process. To divide the basin area effectively, 25 sub-basins were created, with due consideration of soil characteristics and the diverse land cover. The outcomes point out that SUFI-2 outperformed the other algorithms for SWAT calibration, requiring fewer computing model runs and producing the best results. ParaSol established residing the least effective algorithm. After calibration with SUFI-2, the most sensitive parameters for modeling were revealed to be (1) the Effective Channel Hydraulic Conductivity (CH K2) measuring how well water can flow through a channel, with higher values indicating better conductivity, (2) Manning's n value (CH N2) representing the roughness or resistance to flow within the channel, with smaller values suggesting a smoother channel, (3) Surface Runoff Lag Time (SURLAG) quantifying the delay between rainfall and the occurrence of surface runoff, with shorter values indicating faster runoff response, (4) the Universal Soil-Loss Equation (USLE P) estimating the amount of soil loss. The average evapotranspiration within the basin was calculated to be 559.5 mma-1. These calibration results are important for decision-making and updating policies related to water balance management in the basin.

With the continuous emergence of various advanced packaging technologies such as copper interconnection and 3-D packaging technology, it is essential to efficiently and accurately investigate the thermal analysis of high-performance, high-power and complicated electronic devices to better design heat dissipation structures. However, multiscale transient thermal analysis of complex electronic devices by existing numerical methods is still a challenge. In this work, the 3-D domain decomposition method (DDM) with the adaptive time step for the transient thermal analysis of integrated circuits (ICs) is proposed to tackle this problem. By flexible multiscale mesh generation and automatically time step changes based on posteriori errors, the new method significantly improves computational efficiency. Some illustrative numerical examples are presented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method by considering 3-D transient heat transfer with thermal conduction, natural convection and radiation boundaries.

RationaleIn the healthy lung, the pseudostratified conducting airway epithelium is anchored to the reticular basement membrane (RBM) via hemidesmosome junction complexes formed between basal cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM). The RBM within the healthy lung is composed of the ECM proteins laminin and collagen-IV. In patients with asthma, the RBM is remodeled with collagen-I, -III and fibronectin deposition. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of RBM ECM proteins on basal airway epithelial cell attachment, spreading and barrier formation using real-time electrical cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS).MethodsECIS 8-well arrays were coated with 50 μg/mL of fibronectin, collagen-I, collagen-III, collagen-IV, or laminin and compared to bovine serum albumin (BSA) or uncoated controls. The airway epithelial cell line (1HAEo-) was seeded 40, 50, 60, and 70 k cells/well and continuously monitored over 70 h to assess cell attachment, spreading and barrier formation using high (64 k Hz) and low (500 Hz) frequency resistance and capacitance. Data were analyzed using a one-phase decay model from which half-life (time cells cover half of the electrode area) and rate-constant (cell-spreading rate/h) were determined and a generalized additive mixed effect model (GAMM) was used to assess ECM proteins over the entire experiment.ResultsHigh-frequency (64 kHz) capacitance measures demonstrated the half-life for 1HAEo-cells to attach was fastest when grown on fibronectin (6.5 h), followed by collagen-I (7.2 h) and collagen-III (8.1 h), compared to collagen-IV (11.3 h), then laminin (13.2 h) compared to BSA (12.4 h) and uncoated (13.9 h) controls. High-frequency (64 kHz) resistance measures demonstrated that the rate of 1HAEo- cell spreading was significantly faster on fibronectin and collagen-I compared to collagen-III, collagen-IV, laminin, BSA and the uncoated control. Low-frequency (500 Hz) resistance measures demonstrated that 1HAEo-cells formed a functional barrier fastest when grown on fibronectin and collagen-I, compared to the other ECM conditions. Lastly, the distance of 1HAEo-cells from the ECM substrates was the smallest when grown on fibronectin reflecting high cell-matrix adhesion.ConclusionAirway epithelial cells attach, spread and form a barrier fastest on fibronectin, and collagen-I and these reticular basement membrane ECM proteins may play a protective role in preserving the epithelial barrier during airway remodeling in asthma.

Objective To explore the application effect of BOPPPS combined with dynamic scenarios simulation in ICU nursing teaching. Methods Totally 57 nursing students who practiced their internship in ICU ward of a grade-A hospital from July, 2021 to February, 2022 were selected as the research objects. In the clinical teaching of ICU, 27 students in the control group adopted conventional teaching method, and 30 students in the experimental group adopted BOPPPS combined with dynamic scenarios simulation teaching method. The two groups were compared in terms of assessment results, independent learning ability and critical thinking level. Results The examination results of the test group were better than that of the control group, with a significant difference(P＜0. 05). The experimental group had higher evaluation on the teaching effect of BOPPPS combined with dynamic scenario simulation. After teaching, the planning and implementation, self-management and total score of independent learning ability in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group, with statistical significance (P＜0. 05). There was statistically significant difference in the total score of critical thinking in experimental group before and after teaching (P＜0. 05). Conclusion BOPPPS combined with dynamic scenarios simulation can improve students' independent learning ability, cultivate students' critical thinking, and achieve good teaching effect. In this paper, reduction-oxidation between Se and iron-based materials(pure iron and 304L stainless steel) was carried out in glove box under ambient temperature and low-oxygen. Using ion chromatography to analyse the concentration changes of sodium selenate solution and sodium selenite solution in which iron-based materials were immersed. The iron-based material samples before and after the reaction were analysed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS) and Raman spectrometry. The results show that the oxidation-reduction reaction rate of SeO2-4/SeO2-3 and pure iron is significantly faster than that of SeO2-4/SeO2-3 and 304L stainless steel; the reaction rate of ironbased materials and SeO2-3 is higher than that of iron-based materials and SeO2-4.

ObjectiveTo assess the effects of countermeasures against coronavirus disease 2019 （COVID-19） in Shanghai from March to May 2022 in comparison with epidemiological trend of COVID-19 in New York City.MethodsDaily confirmed cases， asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carriers， and daily deaths were obtained in the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention （CDC） of the United States. Descriptive study was conducted by using these data.ResultsFrom March 1 to May 17， the number of daily asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections in Shanghai was up to 58 times as large as that of daily confirmed cases； however， the number of daily confirmed cases in Shanghai was generally less than that in New York in the same time period. In this study, the interaction force between surfactant solution droplets and coal is measured by the mechanical testing device of piezoelectric ceramic double crystal cantilever beam, and the difficulty degree of the droplets wetting coal is characterized. The effects of the concentration of surfactant solution and the type of surfactant on the interaction force were studied. The results showed that in the solution of surfactant fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether(9) (AE09) with the concentration of 5×10-5 mol/L, 8×10-5 mol/L and 1.5×10-4 mol/L, the solution with the concentration of 1.5×10-4 mol/L had the lowest maximum repulsive force and the shortest time to reach the maximum repulsive force, so its wetting ability was the strongest. In the solution of three homologous series of nonionic surfactants of polyoxyethylenated fatty alcs(AE07, AE09 and AE012) with the concentration of 1.5×10-4 mol/L, the maximum repulsive force of AE09 solution was the least, and the time to reach the maximum repulsive force was also the shortest, indicating that it had the strongest wetting ability.

Spermatogenic dysfunction is one of the major secondary complications of diabetes; however, the underlying mechanisms remain ill-defined, and there is no available drug or strategy for the radical treatment of diabetic spermatogenic dysfunction. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the protective effects of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) on testicular spermatogenic function in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. The results show that oral administration of NMN significantly increases the body and testis weight and the number of sperms. Moreover, the abnormal sperm count and the rate of sperm malformation are significantly decreased compared with the saline-treated diabetic mice. Histological analysis reveals that NMN treatment significantly increases the area and diameter of seminiferous tubules, accompanied by an increased number of spermatogenic cells and sperms. Immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR results show that NMN increases Bcl-2 expression and decreases Bax expression in the testis. NMN also increases the protein expression of Vimentin and the mRNA expressions of WT1 and GATA4. In addition, qRT-PCR, western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry results also show that NMN increases the expressions of glycolysis-related rate-limiting enzymes including HK2, PKM2, and LDHA. In summary, this study demonstrates the protective effects of NMN on the testis in an STZ-induced diabetic mice model. NMN exerts its protective effects via reducing spermatogenic cell apoptosis by regulating glycolysis of Sertoli cells in diabetic mice. This study provides an experimental basis for the future clinical application of NMN in diabetes-induced spermatogenic dysfunction.

The concentration of CO2 in the global atmosphere, which is increasingly annually with continued industrial development, affects both the global climate and the ecological environment. To control the concentration of atmospheric CO2, various methods of carbon capture and sequestration have been proposed and continue to be developed. Among them, CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers has potential for effective high-capacity carbon storage. This work reviews both the research status of structural, residual, solubility, and mineral CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers, and the research progress associated with the integrity of cement sheaths and caprocks. The findings indicate that structural sequestration research must comprehensively consider the influence of various factors, and that the capacity of structural sequestration must be evaluated based on the actual geological conditions of the saline aquifer, caprock properties, and CO2 injection rate. The heterogeneity of the caprock and dynamic changes of CO2 concentration are not considered in current simulations of the effect of chemical interaction between CO2-rich brine and the caprock. Residual sequestration and solubility sequestration are mutually interactive; therefore, exploration of the residual sequestration mechanism must consider the impact of solubility sequestration. Models for simulation of CO2 solubility sequestration in an entire saline aquifer should be developed to reservoir scale and must consider reservoir heterogeneity.

ObjectiveThis study investigates the extent of resection, duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative complications in patients with high-grade glioma who received surgery with or without sodium fluorescein guidance.MethodsA single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on 112 patients who visited our department and underwent surgery between July 2017 and June 2022, with 61 in the fluorescein group and 51 in the non-fluorescein group. Baseline characteristics, intraoperative blood loss, surgery duration, resection extent, and postoperative complications were documented.ResultsThe duration of surgery was significantly shorter in the fluorescein group than in the non-fluorescein group (P = 0.022), especially in patients with tumors in the occipital lobes (P = 0.013). More critically, the gross total resection (GTR) rate was significantly higher in the fluorescein group than in the non-fluorescein group (45.9% vs. 19.6%, P = 0.003). The postoperative residual tumor volume (PRTV) was also significantly lower in the fluorescein group than in the non-fluorescein group (0.40 [0.12-7.11] cm3 vs. 4.76 [0.44-11.00] cm3, P = 0.020). Particularly in patients with tumors located in the temporal and occipital lobes (temporal, GTR 47.1% vs. 8.3%, P = 0.026; PRTV 0.23 [0.12-8.97] cm3 vs. 8.35 [4.05-20.59] cm3, P = 0.027; occipital, GTR 75.0% vs. 0.0%, P = 0.005; PRTV 0.15 [0.13-1.50] cm3 vs. 6.58 [3.70-18.79] cm3, P = 0.005). However, the two groups had no significant difference in intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.407) or postoperative complications (P = 0.481).ConclusionsFluorescein-guided resection of high-grade gliomas using a special operating microscope is a feasible, safe, and convenient technique that significantly improves GTR rates and reduces postoperative residual tumor volume when compared to conventional white light surgery without fluorescein guidance. This technique is particularly advantageous for patients with tumors located in non-verbal, sensory, motor, and cognitive areas such as the temporal and occipital lobes, and does not increase the incidence of postoperative complications.

According to the characteristics and differences of manganese oxides in the catalytic treatment of dye wastewater, the catalytic capability and its influencing factors of δ-MnO2 and Mn3O4 two manganese oxides on the catalyzation of methylene blue wastewater were comparatively investigated, the adsorption characteristics of the catalysts and the effect of tert-butyl alcohol on the catalytic efficiency were explored, and the XRD, SEM, BET and FTIR methods were used to study the structural characteristics of the oxides to further reveal the mechanism of the difference in the catalytic performance of the two manganese oxides. The results show that both δ-MnO2 and Mn3O4 can improve the efficiency of the catalytic ozonation system significantly, and δ-MnO2 has higher catalytic activity, the removal rates of chroma and CODcr are 99.77% and 71.43%, respectively, and when pH=11, the dosage of catalyst is 2.4 g/L, and the mass concentration of ozone is 9.5 mg/L, the removal performance of δ-MnO2 is the best. Both of the oxides can promote the production of ·OH, but δ-MnO2 has larger specific surface area, more amount of surface hydroxyl groups and better adsorption performance, which has better catalytic effect than Mn3O4.

Objective To explore the effect of short-term semi-immersion teaching and training based on the learning pyramid model to improve the capacity building of to find early gastric cancer by digestive endoscope physicians. Methods Thirty digestive refresher doctors were randomly selected from our center for 4-week semi-immersion training. The capacity of the trainees to recognize early gastric cancer was tested before and after 4 weeks of training, and the accuracy of the test was compared. Results The accuracy of the test before training, after theoretical lesson and after 4 weeks of training were 44.58%±16.39%, 48.54%±16.95% and 68.75%±12.06% respectively. The test accuracy after theory lesson plus 4 weeks of training was higher than that before training and after only theoretical lesson (P＜0.001).The test accuracy after theoretical lesson was higher than that before the training(P＜0.05). When grouping by the number of cases in previous gastroscopy, no matter before training or after theoretical lesson, the test accuracy with experience in testing was higher than group with less experience. However, the test accuracy of the two groups almost reached a same level after 4 weeks of training(P＜0.01). With the extension of training time, the test accuracy gradually increased (P＜0.001). There was an interaction between grouping and training time (P＜0.001).In the correlation analysis, the number of cases of the previous gastroscopy performance was positively correlated with the test accuracy before training and after theoretical lesson (r=0.668,＜0.001,r=0.581, P＜0.01). Conclusions Semi-immersion training guided by the learning pyramid model can effectively improve the capacity of digestive endoscope physicians to recognize early gastric cancer.

Objective To observe the effect of sleep therapy instrument in the treatment of sleep disorders in the elderly. Methods Totally 120 elderly patients with insomnia were divided into control group and observation group, with 60 patients in each group. The control group was given routine mind-body therapies, including psychological implications, relaxation therapy, exercise therapy, etc. On this basis, the observation group used Beethoven sleep therapy instrument for adjuvant treatment. Comprehensive Assessment of elderly patients with sleep disorders, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Scale (PSQI ), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) , Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) were used for comprehensive evaluation. Results The PSQI score, SAS score, GDS-15 score decreased in both two groups after intervention, and PSQI score, SAS score, GDS-15 score in the observation group were lower than those in the control group, with significant difference (P＜0. 01). Conclusion Based on the routine physical and psychological therapy, application of sleep therapy instrument is more effective in the treatment of sleep disorders in the elderly. (目的 探讨睡眠治疗仪辅助治疗老年睡眠障碍的效果。方法 选取2019年1月—2020年1月医院收治的老年睡眠障碍患者120例, 分为对照组和观察组, 各60人。对照组给予常规身心疗法干预, 包括心理暗示、放松治疗、运动治疗等, 观察组在对照组基础上采用贝多芬睡眠治疗仪进行辅助治疗。对老年睡眠障碍患者进行老年综合评估, 采用匹兹堡睡眠质量指数量表(PSQI)、焦虑自评量表(SAS)和老年抑郁量表(GDS-15)进行综合评估。结果 治疗后, 2组PSQI评分、SAS评分、GDS-15评分均较干预前下降, 且观察组PSQI评分、SAS评分、GDS-15评分低于对照组, 差异有统计学意义(P＜0. 01)。结论 在常规干预的基础上, 应用睡眠治疗仪能有效改善老年睡眠障碍患者睡眠质量。)

The large-distance penetration capability of an annular-shaped charge under multipoint synchronous initiation was experimentally investigated. For different annular charge structures and different multipoint initiation settings, incident angle, collision type of detonation waves, and overpressure on the shaped charge’s liner at adjacent initiation points were analyzed using the detonation wave propagation theory. Furthermore, the shaped charge’s penetration capability at a standoff distance of 1–15 m from a 20 mm thick 45# steel plate (the target) was determined through penetration experiments. It was found that the annular cutter formed by the 500 mm diameter annular shaped charge (charge width: 100 mm) completely penetrated the target for a large distance, namely a distance of 150 times the charge width. The ratio of the width of the ring gap penetrated by the annular cutter to the liner’s initial radial width was about 1.07; this indicated that the annular cutter’s width was equivalent to the liner’s radial width for the above flight distance, which in turn implied that the annular cutter had superior circular degree. The annular cutter formed in the case of Mach reflection had better circular degree, integrity, and penetration capability than that formed by regular reflection.

Background and purpose: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of digestive system. The incidence of colorectal cancer has increased significantly in China in recent years. Various clinical and pathological indicators are helpful for the diagnosis, clinical staging and prognostic evaluation of colorectal cancer. This study aimed to observe the correlation between the expression of mismatch repair protein and serum tumor markers and Ki-67 proliferation index in colorectal cancer, and to analyze the prognostic value of mismatch repair protein, serum tumor markers and Ki-67 proliferation index. Methods: Data of 234 patients with colorectal cancer were collected after surgery in Huadong Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University from July 2014 to June 2018, and the preoperative serum levels of tumor markers (CEA, CA19-9, CA72-4, CA12-5), Ki-67 proliferation index and mismatch repair protein expression rate in surgical specimens were analyzed, in order to find the relationship between these clinicopathological features and prognosis of colorectal cancer. Results: Among 234 postoperative specimens of colorectal cancer patients, a total of 29 cases (12.4%) had defective expression of mismatch repair protein (dMMR), and 205 cases (87.6%) had normal expression of mismatch repair protein (pMMR). In this paper, the dust inhibition effect of fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether(AEO9), sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and dodecyl trimethylamine bromide(DTAB) on respirable dust from Jincheng anthracite was studied. The dynamic surface tension of the surfactant solution and the dynamic contact angle on the surface of anthracite were measured by hanging drop method and pedicle drop method at CMC concentration; the adsorption strength of the surfactant and anthracite, the stability of the micelle and the diffusion coefficient of the single molecule in water were studied by molecular dynamics simulation. Experimental results show that AEO9 solution has the best dust reduction effect on coal dust, followed by SDS and DTAB the worst. Abstract Purpose This study aimed to investigate the impact of a deep learning (DL)-based denoising method on the image quality and lesion detectability of 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) images. Methods Fifty-two oncological patients undergoing an 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging with an acquisition of 180 s per bed position were retrospectively included. The list-mode data were rebinned into four datasets: 100% (reference), 75%, 50%, and 33.3% of the total counts, and then reconstructed by OSEM algorithm and post-processed with the DL and Gaussian filter (GS). The image quality was assessed using a 5-point Likert scale, and FDG-avid lesions were counted to measure lesion detectability. Standardized uptake values (SUVs) in livers and lesions, liver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and target-to-background ratio (TBR) values were compared between the methods. Subgroup analyses compared TBRs after categorizing lesions based on parameters like lesion diameter, uptake or patient habitus. Results The DL method showed superior performance regarding image noise and inferior performance regarding lesion contrast in the qualitative assessment. More than 96.8% of the lesions were successfully identified in DL images. Excellent agreements on SUV in livers and lesions were found. The DL method significantly improved the liver SNR for count reduction down to 33.3% (p 10 mm or lesions in BMIs of > 25. For the 50% dataset, there was no significant difference between DL and reference images for TBR of lesion with > 15 mm or higher uptake than liver. Conclusions The developed DL method improved both liver SNR and lesion TBR indicating better image quality and lesion conspicuousness compared to GS method. Compared with the reference, it showed non-inferior image quality with reduced counts by 25–50% under various conditions.

Due to low runtime overhead and simple implementation of DM (Deadline Monotonic) scheduling, it is widely used in real-time systems. Aiming at the schedulability test problem of the sporadic task DM scheduling under uniprocessor, a density upper bound of 0.693 is analyzed, which can determine the schedulability of a task set in linear time. The theoretical analysis process is carried out in three steps. Firstly, the case is considered where the task set contains only two tasks and the deadline ratio between the tasks is less than 2. Secondly, the case is considered where the task set contains multiple tasks and the deadline ratio between any two tasks is still less than 2. Finally, the case is considered where the task set contains multiple tasks and the deadline ratio between tasks is an arbitrary value. The experimental results show that the upper bound of density is higher than related methods and the run time overhead is much lower than that of other available exact schedulability tests. The time complexity is $O(1)$ when a task is dynamically added to a task set, while that of other methods increases rapidly along with the number of tasks. In addition, we combined this upper bound and other tests to further propose an exact schedulability test, which effectively reduces the running time overhead by 30.8% compared with the state-of-the-art schedulability test. Due to the high efficiency of our schedulability test, an online schedulability test can be implemented in open real-time systems.

Assisted oocyte activation (AOA) has been proposed as an effective technique to overcome the problem of impaired fertilization after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) but the safety of AOA remains a concern. We aimed to investigate if AOA induces imprinting effects on embryos. We used 13 cleavage embryos, nine blastocysts, and eight placentas from 15 patients. The subjects were divided into six groups by tissue type and with or without AOA. The methylation levels of imprinted genes (H19, paternally expressed gene [PEG3] and small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide N [SNRPN]) were tested by pyrosequencing. We observed different methylation levels among cleavage embryos. The variability was much more remarkable between cleavage embryos than blastocysts and placenta tissues. The methylation levels were especially higher in SNRPN and lower in the H19 gene in AOA embryos than those without AOA. No significant difference was found either among blastocysts or among placenta tissues regardless of AOA. The methylation levels of the three genes in blastocysts were very similar to those in the placenta. Compared to conventional ICSI, AOA changed imprinting methylation rates at H19 and SNRPN in cleavage embryos but not in the blastocyst stage and placenta. We recommend that blastocyst transfer should be considered for patients undergoing AOA during in vitro fertilization.

Over the past few decades, the growth of population and the development of the economy have had a significant impact on the way land is used and covered (LULC) in the Nile Nyabarongo River basin. However, there is limited knowledge about the patterns of land use and the mechanisms that drive changes in these patterns because of human activities. Therefore, it is crucial to examine how land use and cover are shifting in this area, identify the factors responsible for these changes, and forecast future patterns. This study sought (1) to evaluate the changes in LULC from 1990 to 2020 and (2) to predict future fluctuations until 2060. By analyzing the LULC data for the years 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, this study simulated the future LULC patterns of the area for the next 30 years using the LULC transition matrix and the Markov chain model. The study classified the LULC into five categories: forestland, grassland, cropland, settlement, and water. The results revealed that there will be significant changes in the LULC of the study area from 2030 to 2060. The forest area is projected to decrease by 801.7 km, 771.6 km, and 508.2 km, while the cropland area will expand by 6307.2 km, 6249.2 km, and 6420.6 km during this period. The grassland area will experience a small increase of 761.1 km, 802.4 km, and 859.1 km, and the settlement area will also grow by 355.2 km, 407.4 km, and 453.2 km. In contrast, the water area will decrease by 55.9 km, 50.5 km, and 40 km. The ongoing pattern of LULCC is expected to persist over the next three decades, with an increase in cropland area and grassland. This study’s findings can provide valuable insights for land use planners and water resource managers in developing fair land use and water resource management policies for the entire region, enabling them to make well-informed decisions.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an age-related condition that has been associated with early telomere attrition; the clinical implications of telomere shortening in COPD are not well known. In this study we aimed to determine the relationship of the epigenetic regulation of telomeric length in peripheral blood with the risk of exacerbations and hospitalization in patients with COPD. Methods Blood DNA methylation profiles were obtained from 292 patients with COPD enrolled in the placebo arm of the Macrolide Azithromycin to Prevent Rapid Worsening of Symptoms Associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (MACRO) Study and who were followed for 1-year. We calculated telomere length based on DNA methylation markers (DNAmTL) and related this biomarker to the risk of exacerbation and hospitalization and health status (St. George Respiratory Questionnaire [SGRQ]) score over time using a Cox proportional hazards model. We also used linear models to investigate the associations of DNAmTL with the rates of exacerbation and hospitalization (adjusted for chronological age, lung function, race, sex, smoking, body mass index and cell composition). Results Participants with short DNAmTL demonstrated increased risk of exacerbation (P = 0.02) and hospitalization (P = 0.03) compared to those with longer DNAmTL. DNAmTL age acceleration was associated with higher rates of exacerbation (P = 1.35 × 10 –04 ) and hospitalization (P = 5.21 × 10 –03 ) and poor health status (lower SGRQ scores) independent of chronological age (P = 0.03). Conclusion Telomeric age based on blood DNA methylation is associated with COPD exacerbation and hospitalization and thus a promising biomarker for poor outcomes in COPD.

Abstract Emphysema is a common phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although resection of emphysematous tissue can improve lung mechanics, it is invasive and fraught with adverse effects. Meanwhile, radiofrequency (RF) treatment is an extracorporeal method that leads to tissue destruction and remodeling, resulting in “volume reduction” and overall improvement in lung compliance of emphysematous lungs. Whether these changes lead to improved exercise tolerance is unknown. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of RF treatment to improve the exercise capacity of mice with emphysema. Fifty-two mice (7 weeks of age) were used in this experiment. A bilateral emphysema model was created by intratracheally instilling porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) (1.5U/100 g body weight). RF treatment (0.5 W/ g body weight) was administered extracorporeally 14 days later and mice were sacrificed after another 21 days. The exercise capacity of mice was measured using a treadmill. Treadmill runs were performed just before PPE instillation (baseline), before RF treatment and before sacrifice. Following sacrifice, lung compliance and mean linear intercept (Lm) were measured and fibrosis was assessed using a modified Ashcroft score. There were 3 experimental groups: controls (instilled with saline, n = 12), emphysema (instilled with porcine pancreatic elastase, PPE, n = 11) and emphysema + treatment (instilled with PPE and given RF, n = 9). At endpoint, the maximum velocity of the emphysema + treatment group was significantly higher than that of the emphysema group, indicating improved exercise tolerance (86.29% of baseline vs 61.69% of baseline, p = 0.01). Histological analysis revealed a significant reduction in emphysema as denoted by Lm between the two groups (median 29.60 µm vs 35.68 µm, p = 0.03). The emphysema + treatment group also demonstrated a higher prevalence of lung fibrosis (≧Grade 3) compared with the emphysema group (11.7% vs 5.4%, p
