Specifically, the time-varying parameter vector autoregressive and autoregressive distributed lag models were employed to investigate the association between age distribution and nurse staffing policy effectiveness.Results: The time-varying impulse responses of the unplanned 14-day readmission rate after discharge to changes in nurse staffing levels indicate a positive association between patient-to-nurse ratios and unplanned 14-day readmission rates across various types of hospitals. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of hospitals’ nurse staffing policy is observed to diminish with population aging, particularly evident in medical centers and regional hospitals.Conclusion: Policymakers should establish lower mandated patient-to-nurse ratios, grounded in practical nurse workforce planning, to address the needs of an aging society and enhance inpatient care quality through improved nurse staffing in hospitals.Keywords: demographic structural change, nurse staffing, inpatient care quality, time-varying parameter vector autoregressive model, autoregressive distributed lags model

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the asymmetric relationship between physician mental health disorders and healthcare quality during the pandemic outbreak in Taiwan.Methods: Daily data for care quality indicators and physician mental health disorders were collected from the National Insurance Research Database in Taiwan, and the quantile-on-quantile regression model was applied to proceed with our analyses.Results: Our results indicated that the overall aggregate effects of each quantile of physician mental health disorders on the cumulative quantiles of healthcare quality are negative (positive) for the 14-day readmission rate (preventable hospitalization rate and non-urgent ED-visit rate). Positively (negatively) cumulative effects of each quantile of physician mental health disorders were detected in the middle (low and high) quantiles of the preventable hospitalization rate. The cumulative effects of each quantile of physician mental health disorders on the high (low and middle) quantiles of the 14-day readmission rate are negative (positive), but the cumulative effects on various quantiles of the non-urgent ED-visit rate exhibit the opposite pattern.Conclusion: The observed variation in the relationship between physician mental health disorders and different quantiles of healthcare quality suggests the need for tailored strategic interventions based on distinct levels of healthcare quality when addressing the higher risk of physician mental health disorders during the pandemic outbreak conditions.Keywords: physician mental disorders, readmission rate, preventable hospitalization, non-urgent emergency department visits, social distancing, quantile on quantile

The significance of this study is to address the concern regarding the low quality of ambulatory care due to the lack of a compulsory referral system under Taiwan’s National Health Insurance system.Methods: We applied the dynamic connectedness network analysis to estimate the total connectedness index of the referral behavior network, which was separated into the horizontal and vertical referral behavior components in order to measure the interdependences of horizontal and vertical referral behaviors across hospitals and local clinics, respectively.Results: Our results suggest that the interdependences of referral behaviors increase the quality of ambulatory care. The harmful effect on the quality of ambulatory care from the interdependences of horizontal referral behaviors within the local clinics sector is more significant than that from the interdependences of horizontal referral behaviors within the hospital sector, and the negative effect on the overall and chronic composite measures of avoidable hospital admissions from the interdependences of vertical behaviors associated with local clinics is more substantial than that from the interdependences of vertical behaviors within the hospital sector.Conclusion: These results not only highlight the significance of care collaboration between local clinics and hospitals to restrain avoidable hospital admissions of chronic diseases for a better overall quality of ambulatory care, but they also suggest that the surveillance system established for the quality of ambulatory care under the global budget payment scheme for the local clinics sector should target ambulatory care for patients with acute conditions.Keywords: connectedness network analysis, connectedness index, referral behavior, referral policy, National Health Insurance

4. Effect of Pharmacological and Neurostimulation Interventions for Cognitive Domains in Patients with Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

introduction: the priority of interventions to alleviate cognitive deficits in patients with bipolar disorder (bd) are inconclusive. we systematically evaluate the efficacy of pharmacological or neurostimulation interventions for cognitive function in bd through a network meta-analysis. methods: the pubmed, psycinfo, embase, and cochrane library databases were searched from database inception to september 30, 2021. following prisma guidelines, all eligible studies were randomized controlled trials of adult bipolar patients that provided detailed cognitive outcomes. studies were excluded if participants limited to comorbid substance use disorder or the intervention was a psychotherapy. network meta-analysis comparing different interventions was conducted for 8 cognitive domains. partially ordered set with hasse diagram was used to resolve conflicting rankings between outcomes. the study was preregistered on prospero database (crd42020152044). results: total 21 rcts including 42 tests for assessing intervention effects on cognition were retrieved. adjunctive erythropoietin (smd = 0.61, 95% ci = 0.00-1.23), withania somnifera (smd = 0.58, 95% ci = 0.03-1.13), and galantamine (smd = 1.22, 95% ci = 0.10-2.35) was more beneficial for attention, working memory, and verbal learning in euthymic bd patients than treatment as usual, respectively. hasse diagram suggested ranking of choice when multiple domains were combined. conclusions: considerable variability in measurements of cognitive domains in bd was observed, and no intervention resulted in superior benefits across all domains. we suggested interventions priority can be tailored according to individual patients’ cognitive deficits. as current findings from relatively small and heterogeneous dataset, future trials with consensus should be applied for building further evidence., Infectious and parasitic diseases, RC109-216

The natural history of tufted angioma is slow, progressive growth for several years, and tends to remain stable thereafter, resulting in disfiguring appearance. The main choice of treatment for tufted angioma is complete surgical excision, but local recurrence is frequent. Here, we report a 33-year-old woman with a four-year history of a steadily increasing pink to violaceous plaque on her right arm accompanied by spontaneous, progressive pain over the last seven months. Histology revealed multiple separated lobules of spindle cells throughout the dermis and subcutaneous tissue to the deep margin, with numerous mitoses but no cellular atypia, the small capillary-sized vessels scattered within the lobules, which were consistent with tufted angioma. To our satisfaction, her pain disappeared and the whole plaque was significantly improved after a four-month course of external application with imiquimod 5% cream.Keywords: tufted angioma, imiquimod, alternative therapy

However, the impact of air quality on the risk of TB in Taiwan is still poorly understood.Objective: To develop a probabilistic integrated population-level risk assessment approach for evaluating the contribution of ambient air pollution exposure to the risk of TB development among different regions of Taiwan.Materials and methods: A Bayesian-based probabilistic risk assessment model was implemented to link exposure concentrations of various air pollutants quantified in a probabilistic manner with the population-based exposure-response models developed by using an epidemiological investigation.Results: The increment of the risk of TB occurred in a region with a higher level of air pollution, indicating a strong relationship between ambient air pollution exposures and TB incidences. Carbon monoxide (CO) exposure showed the highest population attributable fraction (PAF), followed by nitrogen oxides (NOX) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposures. In a region with higher ambient air pollution, it is most likely (80% risk probability) that the contributions of CO exposure to development of TB were 1.6–12.2% (range of median PAFs), whereas NOX and NO2 exposures contributed 1.2–9.8% to developing TB.Conclusion: Our findings provide strong empirical support for the hypothesis and observations from the literature that poor air quality is highly likely to link aetiologically to the risk of TB. Therefore, substantial reductions in CO, NOX, and NO2 exposures are predicted to have health benefits to susceptible and latently infected individuals that provide complementary mitigation efforts in reducing the burden of TB. Considering that people continue to be exposed to both TB bacilli and ambient air pollutants, our approach can be applied for different countries/regions to identify which air pollutants contribute to a higher risk of TB in order to develop potential mitigation programs.Keywords: tuberculosis, ambient air pollution, exposure-response function, probabilistic risk assessment, population attributable fraction

And in recent years, the emergence of resistant bacilli and inadequate disease control and prevention has led to a significant rise in the global TB epidemic. It is known that the cause of TB is Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. But it is not clear why some infected patients are active while others are latent.Methods: We analyzed the blood gene expression profiles of 69 latent TB patients and 54 active pulmonary TB patients from GEO (Transcript Expression Omnibus) database.Results: By applying minimal redundancy maximal relevance and incremental feature selection, we identified 24 signature genes which can predict the TB activation. The support vector machine predictor based on these 24 genes had a sensitivity of 0.907, specificity of 0.913, and accuracy of 0.911, respectively. Although they need to be validated in a large independent dataset, the biological analysis of these 24 genes showed great promise.Conclusion: We found that cytokine production was a key process during TB activation and genes like CYBB, TSPO, CD36, and STAT1 worth further investigation. Understanding the effect of control effort is crucial to inform future control strategies. Objectives: We developed a framework to measure season-based health burden risk from 2001 to 2014. We reconstructed various intervention coverage to assess the attributable effect of dengue infection control efforts. Materials and methods: A dengue–mosquito–human transmission dynamic was used to quantify the vector–host interactions and to estimate the disease epidemics. We used disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) to assess health burden risk. A temperature-basic reproduction number (R0)–DALYs relationship was constructed to examine the potential impacts of temperature on health burden. Finally, a health burden risk model linked a control measure model to evaluate the effect of dengue control interventions. Results: We showed that R0 and DALYs peaked at 25°C with estimates of 2.37 and 1387, respectively. Results indicated that most dengue cases occurred in fall with estimated DALYs of 323 (267–379, 95% CI) at 50% risk probability. We found that repellent spray had by far the largest control effect with an effectiveness of ~71% in all seasons. Pesticide spray and container clean-up have both made important contributions to reducing prevalence/incidence. Repellent, pesticide spray, container clean-up together with Wolbachia infection suppress dengue outbreak by ~90%. Conclusion: Our presented modeling framework provides a useful tool to measure dengue health burden risk and to quantify the effect of dengue control on dengue infection prevalence and disease incidence in the southern region of Taiwan. Secondary pneumococcal pneumonia associated with influenza infection is more likely to increase respiratory morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess exacerbated inflammatory effects posed by secondary pneumococcal pneumonia, given prior influenza infection. Materials and methods: A well-derived mathematical within-host dynamic model of coinfection with influenza A virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) integrated with dose–response relationships composed of previously published mouse experimental data and clinical studies was implemented to study potentially exacerbated inflammatory responses in pneumonia based on a probabilistic approach. Results: We found that TNFα is likely to be the most sensitive biomarker reflecting inflammatory response during coinfection among three explored cytokines. We showed that the worst inflammatory effects would occur at day 7 SP coinfection, with risk probability of 50% (likely) to develop severe inflammatory responses. Our model also showed that the day of secondary SP infection had much more impact on the severity of inflammatory responses in pneumonia compared to the effects caused by initial virus titers and bacteria loads. However, the fate and behavior of ZnO NPs in living organisms are not well described. The purpose of this study was to develop a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model to describe the dynamic interactions of 65ZnO NPs in mice. We estimated key physicochemical parameters of partition coefficients and excretion or elimination rates, based on our previously published data quantifying the biodistributions of 10 nm and 71 nm 65ZnO NPs and zinc nitrate (65Zn(NO3)2) in various mice tissues. The time-dependent partition coefficients and excretion or elimination rates were used to construct our physiologically based pharmacokinetic model. In general, tissue partition coefficients of 65ZnO NPs were greater than those of 65Zn(NO3)2, particularly the lung partition coefficient of 10 nm 65ZnO NPs. Sensitivity analysis revealed that 71 nm 65ZnO NPs and 65Zn(NO3)2 were sensitive to excretion and elimination rates in the liver and gastrointestinal tract. Although the partition coefficient of the brain was relative low, it increased time-dependently for 65ZnO NPs and 65Zn(NO3)2. The simulation of 65Zn(NO3)2 was well fitted with the experimental data. However, replacing partition coefficients of 65ZnO NPs with those of 65Zn(NO3)2 after day 7 greatly improved the fitness of simulation, suggesting that ZnO NPs might decompose to zinc ion after day 7. In this study, we successfully established a potentially predictive dynamic model for slowly decomposed NPs. More caution is suggested for exposure to 65ZnO NPs

Abstract

Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages combine the programming convenience of shared memory with the locality and performance control of message passing. One such language, Unified Parallel C (UPC) is an extension of ISO C defined by a consortium that boasts multiple proprietary and open source compilers. Another PGAS language, Titanium, is a dialect of JavaTM designed for high performance scientific computation. In this paper we describe some of the highlights of two related projects, the Titanium project centered at U.C. Berkeley and the UPC project centered at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Both compilers use a source-to-source strategy that trans-lates the parallel languages to C with calls to a communication layer called GASNet. The result is portable high-performance compilers that run on a large variety of shared and distributed memory multiprocessors. Both projects combine compiler, runtime, and application efforts to demonstrate some of the performance and productivity advantages to these languages.Copyright 2007 ACM.

Abstract

Overlapping communication with computation is an important optimization on current cluster architectures; its importance is likely to increase as the doubling of processing power far outpaces any improvements in communication latency. PGAS languages offer unique opportunities for communication overlap, because their one-sided communication model enables low overhead data transfer. Recent results have shown the value of hiding latency by manually applying language-level nonblocking data transfer routines, but this process can be both tedious and error-prone. In this paper, we present a runtime framework that automatically schedules the data transfers to achieve overlap. The optimization framework is entirely transparent to the user, and aggressively reorders and aggregates both remote puts and gets. We preserve correctness via runtime conflict checks and temporary buffers, using several techniques to lower the overhead. Experimental results on application benchmarks suggest that our framework can be very effective at hiding communication latency on clusters, improving performance over the blocking code by an average of 16% for some of the NAS Parallel Benchmarks, 48% for GUPS, and over 25% for a multi-block fluid dynamics solver. While the system is not yet as effective as aggressive manual optimization, it increases programmers’ productivity by freeing them from the details of communication management. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Abstract

The Cray X1 was recently introduced as the first in a new line of parallel systems to combine high-bandwidth vector processing with an MPP system architecture. Alongside capabilities such as automatic fine-grained data parallelism through the use of vector instructions, the X1 offers hardware support for a transparent global-address space (GAS), which makes it an interesting target for GAS languages. In this paper, we describe our experience with developing a portable, open-source and. high performance compiler for Unified Parallel C (UPC), a SPMD global-address space language extension of ISO C. As part of our implementation effort, we evaluate the X1’s hardware support for GAS languages and provide empirical performance characterizations in the context of leveraging features such as vectorization and global pointers for the Berkeley UPC compiler. We discuss several difficulties encountered in the Cray C compiler which are likely to present challenges for many users, especially implementors of libraries and source-to-source translators. Finally, we analyze the performance of our compiler on some benchmark programs and show that, while there are some limitations of the current compilation approach, the Berkeley UPC compiler uses the X1 network more effectively than MPI or SHMEM, and generates serial code whose vectorizability is comparable to the original C code.

Abstract

Unified Parallel C (UPC) is a parallel language that uses a Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) model of parallelism within a global address space. The global address space is used to simplify programming, especially on applications with irregular data structures that lead to fine-grained sharing between threads. Recent results have shown that the performance of UPC using a commercial compiler is comparable to that of MPI [7]. In this paper we describe a portable open source compiler for UPC. Our goal is to achieve a similar performance while enabling easy porting of the compiler and runtime, and also provide a framework that allows for extensive optimizations. We identify some of the challenges in compiling UPC and use a combination of micro-benchmarks and application kernels to show that our compiler has low overhead for basic operations on shared data and is competitive, and sometimes faster than, the commercial HP compiler. We also investigate several communication optimizations, and show significant benefits by hand-optimizing the generated code.

Abstract

Neutrophils constitute abundant cellular components in human gastric cancer (GC) tissues, but their protumorigenic subset in pathogenesis of GC progression is unclear. Here, it is found that patients with GC show significantly higher neutrophil infiltration in tumors that is regulated by CXCL12-CXCR4 chemotaxis. These tumor-infiltrating neutrophils express high level immunosuppressive molecules FasL and PD-L2, and this FasL+PD-L2+ neutrophil subset with a unique phenotype constitutes at least 20% of all neutrophils in advanced GC and predicts poor patient survival. Tumor induces neutrophils to express FasL and PD-L2 proteins with similar phenotype to those in GC tumors in both time-dependent and dose-dependent manners. Mechanistically, Th17 cell-derived IL-17A and tumor cell-derived G-CSF can significantly induce neutrophil FasL and PD-L2 expression via activating ERK-NF-κB and JAK-STAT3 signaling pathway, respectively. Importantly, upon over-expressing FasL and PD-L2, neutrophils acquire immunosuppressive functions on tumor-specific CD8+ T-cells and promote the growth and progression of human GC tumors in vitro and in vivo, which can be reversed by blocking FasL and PD-L2 on these neutrophils. Thus, the work identifies a novel protumorigenic FasL+PD-L2+ neutrophil subset in GC and provides new insights for human cancer immunosuppression and anti-cancer therapies targeting these pathogenic cells.

Using the CLEO detector, we present a measurement of the mass of the charged charmed strange baryon Ξ+c and its neutral counterpart the Ξ0c. The Ξ+c is observed through its decay to Ξ-π+π+, and its mass is measured to be (2467±3±4) MeV. The isospin mass splitting of the Ξc system is found to be M(Ξ+c)-M(Ξ0c)=(-5±4±1)MeV. © 1989.

Abstract

Expectation propagation is a general approach to fast approximate inference for graphical models. The existing literature treats models separately when it comes to deriving and coding expectation propagation inference algorithms. This comes at the cost of similar, long-winded algebraic steps being repeated and slowing down algorithmic development. We demonstrate how factor graph fragmentization can overcome this impediment. This involves adoption of the message passing on a factor graph approach to expectation propagation and identification of factor graph sub-graphs, which we call fragments, that are common to wide classes of models. Key fragments and their corresponding messages are catalogued which means that their algebra does not need to be repeated. This allows compartmentalization of coding and efficient software development.

Methods: We included 9331 women from the After Breast Cancer Pooling Project who provided data on social networks within approximately two years following diagnosis. A social network index was derived from information about the presence of a spouse or intimate partner, religious ties, community participation, friendship ties, and numbers of living relatives. Diversity was assessed as variety of ties, independent of size. We used logistic regression to evaluate associations with outcomes and evaluated whether effect estimates differed using meta-analytic techniques. Results: Associations were similar across cohorts though analyses of smoking and alcohol included US cohorts only because of low prevalence of these behaviors in the Shanghai cohort. Abstract

It is assumed that total and visceral adiposity increase cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among breast cancer survivors; yet, these associations have not been studied, and could differ from non-cancer populations due to the modifying effects of cancer treatment. METHODS: We studied 2,630 Stage I–III breast cancer patients without pre-existing CVD diagnosed at Kaiser Permanente (2006–2013). We quantified body composition from computed tomography scans taken at breast cancer diagnosis. The main exposures were total and visceral adiposity indices (cm2/m2), examined in tertiles. From ICD codes, we identified non-fatal stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD), and heart failure, and a composite outcome including CVD death (CVD). We estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusting for age, smoking, tumor (stage, grade, and ER/PR and HER2 status) and treatment (chemotherapy and/or radiation) factors, skeletal muscle index (SMI), and body mass index (BMI) residuals. Abstract

A simple Ge-on-glass metal-oxide-semiconductor solar cell has been demonstrated by wafer bonding and smart-cut. Since single crystalline Ge is directly bonded on glass, the crystalline substrate is not necessary. The metal-oxide-semiconductor structure can be easily fabricated without n and p dopant diffusion or implantation. The reason for low efficiency is discussed, and then the optimized structures are designed by simulation. An outstanding enhancement on efficiency can be achieved with the Si/Ge/Si structure. The best performance can be achieved by optimization of the position of the Ge layer, the thickness of the Ge layer, and the number of the Ge layers. The efficiency of the thin film Si/Ge/Si solar cell with single layer of 30-nm-thick Ge outside the depletion region reaches 15.9%, as compared to the control Si sample of 11.8%. Based on the simulation and technologies, high efficiency thin film solar cells can be demonstrated in the future.

Abstract

Many causal mutations of intellectual disability have been found in genes involved in epigenetic regulations. Replication-independent deposition of the histone H3.3 variant by the HIRA complex is a prominent nucleosome replacement mechanism affecting gene transcription, especially in postmitotic neurons. However, how HIRA-mediated H3.3 deposition is regulated in these cells remains unclear. Here, we report that dBRWD3, the Drosophila ortholog of the intellectual disability gene BRWD3, regulates gene expression through H3.3, HIRA, and its associated chaperone Yemanuclein (YEM), the fly ortholog of mammalian Ubinuclein1. In dBRWD3 mutants, increased H3.3 levels disrupt gene expression, dendritic morphogenesis, and sensory organ differentiation. Inactivation of yem or H3.3 remarkably suppresses the global transcriptome changes and various developmental defects caused by dBRWD3 mutations. Our work thus establishes a previously unknown negative regulation of H3.3 and advances our understanding of BRWD3-dependent intellectual disability.

Abstract

Summary Background An uncommon histiocytosis primarily involving the lymph nodes, Rosai–Dorfman disease (RDD, originally called sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy) involves extranodal sites in 43% of cases; cutaneous RDD (C-RDD) is a rare form of RDD limited to the skin. The clinicopathological diagnosis of C-RDD may sometimes be difficult, with different clinical profiles from those of its nodal counterpart, and occasionally misleading histological pictures. There have been few multipatient studies of C-RDD and documentation of its histological spectrum is rare. Objectives To identify the clinical and histopathological profiles, associated features, and the chronological changes of this rare histiocytosis. Methods From 1991 to 2002, patients diagnosed as having C-RDD were collected in four academic hospitals. Clinical presentations, treatments, and courses of each case were documented. In total, 21 biopsy specimens obtained from these patients were re-evaluated and scored microscopically with attention to the uncommon patterns and chronological evolution both clinically and histologically. Results We examined six patients with C-RDD, three men and three women. The mean age at the first visit was 43·7 years. The clinical presentations were mostly papules, nodules and plaques, varying with the duration and depth of lesions. Although the anatomical distribution was wide, the face was most commonly involved. Evolutional changes were identified clinically, as the lesions typically began with papules or plaques and grew to form nodules with satellite lesions and resolved with fibrotic plaques before complete remission. No patient had lymphadenopathy or extracutaneous lesions during follow-up (mean 50·5 months). At the end of follow-up, the lesions in four patients had completely resolved irrespective of treatment; two patients had persistent lesions. The histopathological pattern of the main infiltrate, the components of cells and the stromal responses showed dynamic changes according to the duration of lesions. The characteristic Rosai–Dorfman cells (RD cells) were found in association with a nodular or diffuse infiltrate in 15 lesions (71%). Four lesions (19%) demonstrated a patchy/interstitial pattern. One lesion (5%) assumed the pattern of a suppurative granuloma. RD cells were less readily found in these atypical patterns. Conspicuous proliferation of histiocytes associated with RD cells was found in three lesions, including xanthoma, localized Langerhans cell histiocytosis and xanthogranuloma. Along with lymphocytes, plasma cells were present in all lesions, often in large numbers with occasional binucleated or trinucleated cells. Variably found in the lesions were neutrophils (nine lesions, 43%) and eosinophils (13 lesions, 62%). The former occasionally formed microabscesses, while the latter were often few in number. Vascular proliferation was a relatively constant feature (90%). Fibrosis was found in 10 lesions (48%). Conclusions Our study further confirms that C-RDD is a distinct entity with different age and possibly race distributions from RDD. Compared with its nodal counterpart, C-RDD demonstrates a wider histopathological spectrum with different clinicopathological phases depending on duration of the lesions. Awareness of these features is helpful in making a correct diagnosis. The associations of C-RDD with other histiocytoses may have important implications for the pathogenesis of this rare histiocytosis.

36. A Prospective Study of Smoking and Risk of Breast Cancer in Young Adult Women

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between smoking and invasive breast cancers characterized by their estrogen receptor status in a large prospective study of mainly premenopausal women. Method: 112,844 women aged 25–42 years in 1989 were followed 10 years; questionnaire information on medical illnesses and risk factors was collected biennially and information on diet was collected in 1991 and 1995. During this period of follow-up (1,077,536 person-years), 1009 incident breast cancer cases were documented. Results: In the multivariate-adjusted models, smoking status was not significantly related to overall breast cancer risk: compared with never smokers, the relative risks (RRs) were 1.18 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–1.36] for past smokers and 1.12 (95% CI 0.92–1.37) for current smokers. Increasing duration of smoking before the first pregnancy was associated with a greater risk of breast cancer, although little increase was seen in the highest category: compared with never smokers, RRs were 1.42 (95% CI 1.10–1.83) for 15–19 years of smoking and 1.10 (95% CI 0.80–1.52) for ≥20 years of smoking (P for trend = 0.01). Smoking was related most strongly to the risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers. For women who had smoked for ≥20 years, the RR of estrogen receptor-positive cancer was 1.37 (95% CI 1.07–1.74) and the RR of estrogen receptor-negative cancer was 1.04 (95% CI 0.71–1.53). For smoking before age 15, the RRs were 1.49 (95% CI 1.03–2.17) for estrogen receptor-positive cancer and 1.19 (95% CI 0.69–2.08) for estrogen receptor-negative cancer. Conclusion: Our results suggest that longer duration of smoking may be related to the risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer but possibly less so for estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer.

Abstract

In prostate cancer, Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) depletion occurs frequently, suggesting a role as suppressor tumor. KLF4 is a transcription factor associated with androgen receptor (AR) expression; however, its cellular functions and signaling regulation mechanism remain largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrated that activated AR binds to the KLF4 promoter and enhances KLF4 expression, which reciprocally targets the AR promoter, thus sustaining KLF4 activity. Ectopic KLF4 expression in androgen-independent prostate cancer cells induced AR expression and decreased cell proliferation, invasion and bone metastasis. We previously showed that increased microRNA (miR)-1 expression is associated with reduced bone metastasis of prostate cancer cells. Here we observed that KLF4 targets the primary miR-1-2 stem-loop promoter and stimulates miR-1 expression. In clinical prostate cancer specimens, KLF4 levels were positively correlated with miR-1 and AR levels. These data suggest that the loss of KLF4 expression is one mechanistic link between aggressive prostate cancer progression and low canonical AR output through miR-1 inactivation.

Abstract

Therapeutic upregulation of macroautophagy in cancer cells provides an alternative mechanism forcell death. Prolactin (PRL) and its receptor (PRLR) are considered attractive therapeutic targets because of their roles as growth factors in tumor growth and progression. We utilized G129R, an antagonist peptide of PRL, to block activity of the tumoral PRL/PRLR axis, which resulted in inhibition of tumor growth in orthotopic models of human ovarian cancer. Prolonged treatment with G129R induced the accumulation of redundant autolysosomes in 3D cancer spheroids, leading to a type II programmed cell death. This inducible autophagy was a noncanonical beclin-1-independent pathway and was sustained by an astrocytic phosphoprotein (PEA-15) and protein kinase C zeta interactome. Lower levels of tumoral PRL/PRLR inclinical samples were associated with longer patient survival. Our findings provide an understanding of the mechanisms of tumor growth inhibition through targeting PRL/PRLR and may have clinical implications. © 2014 The Authors.

Abstract

A more precise determination of the B0-B0BAR mixing parameter in Z0 decays based on a fourfold increase in statistics has been made using the 1990 and 1991 L3 data. The analysis of the dilepton events, muons and electrons, gives: chi(B) = 0. 121 +/- 0.017 (stat) +/- 0.006 (sys). Using the value of chi(d) measured at the UPSILON(4S) we derive the following limit for chi(s): chi(S) > 0.16 (90% CL).

Abstract

The L3 detector at LEP has been used to determine the number of light neutrino families by measuring the cross section of single photon even in e+e- collisions at energies near the Z0 resonance. We have observed 61 single photon candidates with more than 1.5 GeV of deposited energy in the barrel electromagnetic calorimeter, for a total integrated luminosity of 3.0 pb-1. From a likelihood fit to the single photon cross sections, we determine N(nu) = 3.24 +/- 0.46 (statistical) +/- 0.22 (systematic).

Abstract

Media temporalities of the elderly : evolutions in stability This article shows the context of analysis and the first results of a research on media temporalities of the elderly. Several works have finely analysed the diversity of the media practices and studied meanings of media uses. I wish to continue these analyses by insisting on the evolutionary and dynamic aspect of the practices and temporalities of users having expanded, enhanced, so called "interactive" radio and especially television programming. A priori, the elderly, upon retirement, have a "full-time free time". Their media practices seem strongly influenced by their first experiments ; the appropriation of the various peripheral accessories which gradually came with the media, to the latest digital ones, seems to reinforce their habits of watching television. Their representations and relations with times and media are very far away from the image of television like omnipresent media or "devourer of time". Rather, their media practices are to be understood like a temporality of the occupation, according to the expression of Gerard Derèze, characterized by interest and utility. A particular glance at the users who do not carry out a systematic selection of the programs, accepting the unforeseen, highlights an approach of media and time that allow "useful encounter" which I would qualify in a first stage by : "chance and encounter" and "random and the following". The few points presented here make me assume that the global relation of the autonomous elderly persons to the media can evolve when confronted to their new temporal framework and the new program offer, whereas their representations and use of the media remain quite stable.

Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have found evidence for L=1 charmed mesons in e+e- annihilations. We observe a D**0 state at mass 2461±3±1 MeV/c2 and width 20-12-10+9+9 MeV/c2 decaying to D+-. We also see an enhancement in the m(D*+-)-m(D*+) mass-difference spectrum and by examining D*+ decay-angle dependence, we see structure consistent with two states decaying to D*+-. We observe a lower-mass state, at mass (2428±3±2) MeV/c2 and width (23-6-4+8+10) MeV/c2, assuming that the higher-mass component is from the decay D**0(2461)D*+-. We present arguments for the spin-parity assignments of these states. We also report observation of candidate L=1 cs» state decaying to D*+Ks0. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have searched for neutrinoless decays into three charged particles. Evidence of such decays would demonstrate nonconservation of lepton flavor and, in some cases, lepton number. We see no signal for any such neutrinoless decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions. © 1990 The American Physical Society.
