Abstract

We report on experimental determination of the strain and bandgap of InAsP in epitaxially grown InAsP-InP core-shell nanowires. The core-shell nanowires are grown via metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The as-grown nanowires are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, micro-photoluminescence ($\mu$PL) spectroscopy and micro-Raman ($\mu$-Raman) spectroscopy measurements. We observe that the core-shell nanowires are of wurtzite (WZ) crystal phase and are coherently strained, with the core and the shell having the same number of atomic planes in each nanowire. We determine the predominantly uniaxial strains formed in the core-shell nanowires along the nanowire growth axis and demonstrate that the strains can be described using an analytical expression. The bandgap energies in the strained WZ InAsP core materials are extracted from the $\mu$PL measurements of individual core-shell nanowires. Abstract

This work investigates exciton localization and dynamics in semiconductor GaNAsP nanowires (NWs) with varying nitrogen concentrations. Through detailed time-resolved photoluminescence studies, we identify a nitrogen composition-dependent difference in exciton transfer between localized states formed due to alloy disorder. With [N] = 0.1%, the localized states exhibit cluster-like, non-interacting behavior, whereas at [N] = 1.1%, a continuous band of localized states is observed. Additionally, the phosphorous incorporation in the NWs appears to enhance the exciton spatial confinement compared to behaviors observed in phosphorous-free GaNAs NWs, emphasizing the role of the alloy composition in the nature of exciton localization. Temperature is highlighted as a significant factor affecting exciton mobility, enabling efficient transfer between the localized states at higher temperatures. This, in turn, influences exciton lifetimes. Our findings, therefore, shed light on the nature of exciton dynamics in GaNAsP NWs, enriching our understanding of these materials and paving the way for their applications in optoelectronics. Abstract

Transition metal (TM) ions incorporated into a host from a wide bandgap semiconductor are recognized as a promising system for quantum technologies with enormous potential. In this work, we report on a TM color center in β-Ga2O3 with physical properties attractive for quantum information applications. The center is found to emit at 1.316 μm and exhibits weak coupling to phonons, with optically addressable higher-lying excited states, beneficial for single-photon emission within the telecom range (O-band). Using magneto-photoluminescence (PL) complemented by time-resolved PL measurements, we identify the monitored emission to be internal 1E→3A2 spin-forbidden transitions of a 3d8 TM ion with a spin-triplet ground state—a possible candidate for a spin qubit. We tentatively attribute this color center to a complex involving a sixfold coordinated Cu3+ ion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of stroke - the second leading cause of death worldwide - were conducted predominantly in populations of European ancestry1,2. Here, in cross-ancestry GWAS meta-analyses of 110,182 patients who have had a stroke (five ancestries, 33% non-European) and 1,503,898 control individuals, we identify association signals for stroke and its subtypes at 89 (61 new) independent loci: 60 in primary inverse-variance-weighted analyses and 29 in secondary meta-regression and multitrait analyses. On the basis of internal cross-ancestry validation and an independent follow-up in 89,084 additional cases of stroke (30% non-European) and 1,013,843 control individuals, 87% of the primary stroke risk loci and 60% of the secondary stroke risk loci were replicated (P < 0.05). Effect sizes were highly correlated across ancestries. Cross-ancestry fine-mapping, in silico mutagenesis analysis3, and transcriptome-wide and proteome-wide association analyses revealed putative causal genes (such as SH3PXD2A and FURIN) and variants (such as at GRK5 and NOS3). Using a three-pronged approach4, we provide genetic evidence for putative drug effects, highlighting F11, KLKB1, PROC, GP1BA, LAMC2 and VCAM1 as possible targets, with drugs already under investigation for stroke for F11 and PROC. A polygenic score integrating cross-ancestry and ancestry-specific stroke GWASs with vascular-risk factor GWASs (integrative polygenic scores) strongly predicted ischaemic stroke in populations of European, East Asian and African ancestry5. Stroke genetic risk scores were predictive of ischaemic stroke independent of clinical risk factors in 52,600 clinical-trial participants with cardiometabolic disease. Our results provide insights to inform biology, reveal potential drug targets and derive genetic risk prediction tools across ancestries.

Abstract

Autosomal genetic analyses of blood lipids have yielded key insights for coronary heart disease (CHD). However, X chromosome genetic variation is understudied for blood lipids in large sample sizes. We now analyze genetic and blood lipid data in a high-coverage whole X chromosome sequencing study of 65,322 multi-ancestry participants and perform replication among 456,893 European participants. Common alleles on chromosome Xq23 are strongly associated with reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides (min P = 8.5 × 10−72), with similar effects for males and females. Chromosome Xq23 lipid-lowering alleles are associated with reduced odds for CHD among 42,545 cases and 591,247 controls (P = 1.7 × 10−4), and reduced odds for diabetes mellitus type 2 among 54,095 cases and 573,885 controls (P = 1.4 × 10−5). Although we observe an association with increased BMI, waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI is reduced, bioimpedance analyses indicate increased gluteofemoral fat, and abdominal MRI analyses indicate reduced visceral adiposity. Co-localization analyses strongly correlate increased CHRDL1 gene expression, particularly in adipose tissue, with reduced concentrations of blood lipids.

Abstract

We report the largest and most ancestrally diverse genetic study of type 1 diabetes (T1D) to date (61,427 participants), yielding 152 regions associated to false discovery rate < 0.01, including 36 regions associated to genome-wide significance for the first time. Credible sets of disease-associated variants are specifically enriched in immune cell accessible chromatin, particularly in CD4+ effector T cells. Colocalization with chromatin accessibility quantitative trait loci (QTL) in CD4+ T cells identified five regions where differences in T1D risk and chromatin accessibility are potentially driven by the same causal variant. Allele-specific chromatin accessibility further refined the set of putative causal variants with functional relevance in CD4+ T cells and integration of whole blood expression QTLs identified candidate T1D genes, providing high-yield targets for mechanistic follow-up. We highlight rs72938038 in BACH2 as a candidate causal T1D variant, where the T1D risk allele leads to decreased enhancer accessibility and BACH2 expression in T cells. Finally, we prioritise potential drug targets by integrating genetic evidence, functional genomic maps, and immune protein-protein interactions, identifying 12 genes implicated in T1D that have been targeted in clinical trials for autoimmune diseases. These findings provide an expanded genomic landscape for T1D, including proposed genetic regulatory mechanisms of T1D-associated variants and genetic support for therapeutic targets for immune intervention.

Abstract

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three Earth-orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5 , { m km}$. The satellites will form an equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4} , { m Hz}$ and $1 , { m Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe and exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new-generation $17 , { m cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which was launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser-ranging station equipped with a $1.2 , { m m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite was launched on 20 December 2019 - the first-round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Abstract

Thyroid hormone has pleiotropic regulatory effects on growth, development, and metabolism. It also regulates cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. In the present study, differentially expressed genes (DEG) and their related pathways involved in TH regulation during gestation were identified in the placenta tissues of high thyroid-induced mice by RNA sequencing. The levels of TSH, FT3, and FT4 in blood showed an increasing tendency in the high thyroid-induced mice with intragastric administration of 0.250 or 0.500 μg•μL-1 L-T4, respectively. Compared to CG9d mice, one DEG and 10 DEGs were identified in the LG9d and HG9d groups, respectively. There were 32 DEGs identified between the LG9d and HG9d, 22 of which were up-regulated DEGs and 10 were down-regulated. Several GO annotations and signaling pathways were associated with embryonic development and TH synthesis and metabolism, including the Wnt signaling pathway and the TH signaling pathway. The expressions of nine randomly selected DEGs were re-quantified by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and showed a consistent tendency with the results of RNA-sequencing, which suggests that reliable data are obtained in the transcriptome assay. Abstract

Patients with multiple myeloma are generally older and vary in fitness levels, which may influence the clinical benefit of treatment. Patients from the large, phase 3 FIRST trial in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) were retrospectively investigated to determine outcomes based on frailty using scores for age, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS), instead of the EQ-5D quality-of-life questionnaire, as previously reported. ECOG PS (n = 1618) was investigated in frailty groups: frail (49%) and nonfrail (51%). Frail patients experienced worse progression-free and overall survival vs nonfrail patients. Prognostic assessment was improved when combining frailty and International Staging System stage (I/II vs III). Frail patients had a higher risk of developing grade 3/4 treatment-emergent adverse events. Treatment effects observed in the FIRST trial were confirmed per frailty group and per frailty and ISS group. The use of this ECOG PS–containing frailty scale as a predictive measure of clinical outcomes in patients with transplant-ineligible NDMM is supported by data from the FIRST trial. This score, based on age, CCI, and ECOG PS, can be easily replicated and may help design future myeloma studies in frail or nonfrail elderly patients. © 2019, The Author(s).

Abstract

Doping of organic semiconductors is a powerful tool to optimize the performance of various organic (opto)electronic and bioelectronic devices. Despite recent advances, the low thermal stability of the electronic properties of doped polymers still represents a significant obstacle to implementing these materials into practical applications. Hence, the development of conducting doped polymers with excellent long-term stability at elevated temperatures is highly desirable. Here, we report on the sequential doping of the ladder-type polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) with a benzimidazole-based dopant (i.e., N-DMBI). By combining electrical, UV-vis/infrared, X-ray diffraction, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements, we quantitatively characterized the conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, spin density, and microstructure of the sequentially doped polymer films as a function of the thermal annealing temperature. Importantly, we observed that the electrical conductivity of N-DMBI-doped BBL remains unchanged even after 20 h of heating at 190 °C. This finding is remarkable and of particular interest for organic thermoelectrics.

Abstract

Dominant coral-associated Endozoicomonas bacteria species are hypothesized to play a role in the coral sulfur cycle by metabolizing dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) into dimethylsulfide (DMS); however, no sequenced genome to date harbors genes for this process. In this study, we assembled high-quality (>95% complete) draft genomes of strains of the recently added species Endozoicomonas acroporae (Acr-14T, Acr-1, and Acr-5) isolated from the coral Acropora sp. and performed a comparative genomic analysis on the genus Endozoicomonas. We identified DMSP CoA-transferase/lyase-a dddD gene homolog in all sequenced genomes of E. acroporae strains-and functionally characterized bacteria capable of metabolizing DMSP into DMS via the DddD cleavage pathway using RT-qPCR and gas chromatography (GC). Furthermore, we demonstrated that E. acroporae strains can use DMSP as a carbon source and have genes arranged in an operon-like manner to link DMSP metabolism to the central carbon cycle. This study confirms the role of Endozoicomonas in the coral sulfur cycle.

Abstract

Estimates from Mendelian randomization studies of unrelated individuals can be biased due to uncontrolled confounding from familial effects. Here we describe methods for within-family Mendelian randomization analyses and use simulation studies to show that family-based analyses can reduce such biases. We illustrate empirically how familial effects can affect estimates using data from 61,008 siblings from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study and UK Biobank and replicated our findings using 222,368 siblings from 23andMe. Both Mendelian randomization estimates using unrelated individuals and within family methods reproduced established effects of lower BMI reducing risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. However, while Mendelian randomization estimates from samples of unrelated individuals suggested that taller height and lower BMI increase educational attainment, these effects were strongly attenuated in within-family Mendelian randomization analyses. Our findings indicate the necessity of controlling for population structure and familial effects in Mendelian randomization studies.

Abstract

Spintronics holds great potential for next-generation high-speed and low-power consumption information technology. Recently, lead halide perovskites (LHPs), which have gained great success in optoelectronics, also show interesting magnetic properties. However, the spin-related properties in LHPs originate from the spin-orbit coupling of Pb, limiting further development of these materials in spintronics. Here, we demonstrate a new generation of halide perovskites, by alloying magnetic elements into optoelectronic double perovskites, which provide rich chemical and structural diversities to host different magnetic elements. In our iron-alloyed double perovskite, Cs2Ag(Bi:Fe)Br6, Fe3+ replaces Bi3+ and forms FeBr6 clusters that homogenously distribute throughout the double perovskite crystals. We observe a strong temperature-dependent magnetic response at temperatures below 30 K, which is tentatively attributed to a weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic response from localized regions. We anticipate that this work will stimulate future efforts in exploring this simple yet efficient approach to develop new spintronic materials based on lead-free double perovskites.

Abstract

Matched energy level alignment is a key requirement for efficient organic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaics, and field-effect transistors. The effect of thermal stress/annealing on energy level alignment and related properties of the devices are less discussed compared to the extensively explored effect on morphology and corresponding device performance. Here all polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) are employed to study thermal annealing effects on energy level alignment and the corresponding effect on the device properties of the all-PSCs. It is found that optimized energy level alignment can be achieved by thermal annealing. An interface dipole layer at the donor/acceptor interface is introduced by energy level realignment that assists charge generation by reducing geminate recombination so that the voltage loss is dramatically reduced, improving the performance of the all-PSCs.

Abstract

We show by electron spin resonance (ESR) and Raman spectroscopies that the crystal phase transition of the lead-free double-perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 has a profound symmetry-breaking effect on the high spin states of, for example, a transition-metal ion Fe3+ and the vibrational modes. It lifts their degeneracy when the crystal undergoes the cubic-tetragonal phase transition, splitting the six-fold degenerate S = 5/2 state of Fe3+ to three Kramer doublets and the enharmonic breathing mode Tg of the MBr6 octahedra (M = Ag, Bi, Fe) into Eg + Ag. The magnitudes of both spin and Raman line splitting are shown to directly correlate with the strength of the tetragonal strain field. This work, in turn, demonstrates the power of the ESR and Raman spectroscopies in probing structural phase transitions and in providing in-depth information on the interplay between the structural, spin, and vibrational properties of lead-free double perovskites, a newly emerging and promising class of materials for low-cost and high-efficiency photovoltaics and optoelectronics.
