We report the nonlinear optical localization in an embedded waveguide array fabricated in chalcogenide glass. The array, which consists of seven waveguides with circularly symmetric cross sections, is realized by ultrafast laser writing. Light propagation in the chalcogenide waveguide array is studied with near infrared laser pulses centered at 1040 nm. The peak intensity required for nonlinear localization for the 1-cm long waveguide array was 35.1 GW/cm 2, using 10-nJ pulses with 300-fs pulse width, which is 70 times lower than that reported in fused silica waveguide arrays and with over 7 times shorter interaction distance. Results reported in this paper demonstrated that ultrafast laser writing is a viable tool to produce 3D all-optical switching waveguide circuits in chalcogenide glass. © 2014 Author(s).

This Letter reports a nonlinear directional waveguide coupler written by ultrafast laser in gallium lanthanum sulfide chalcogenide glass. The nonlinear waveguide device is tested with laser pulses input in two orthogonal polarizations, and all optical switching at 1040 nm between the two coupled waveguides is observed at a peak fluence of 16 GW?cm2. The spectra and autocorrelation measurement from the waveguide outputs show dominant nonlinear effects and negligible dispersion for light propagation in both channels. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

Bragg waveguides are fundamental components in photonic integrated circuits and are particularly interesting for mid-IR applications in high index, highly nonlinear materials. In this work, we present Bragg waveguides fabricated in bulk chalcogenide glass using an ultrafast laser. Waveguides with near circularly symmetric cross sections and low propagation loss are obtained through spatial and temporal beam shaping. Using a single-pass technique, the waveguide and Bragg structure are formed at the same time. First through sixth order gratings with strengths of up to 25 dB are realized, and performance is evaluated based on the modulation duty cycle of the writing beam. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

This paper presents an effective integration scheme of nanostructured SnO2 with the fiber optic platform for chemical sensing applications based on evanescent optical interactions. By using a triblock copolymer as a structure directing agent as the means of nano-structuring, the refractive index of SnO2 is reduced from >2.0 to 1.46, in accordance with effective medium theory for optimal on-fiber integration. Hightemperature stable fiber Bragg gratings inscribed in D-shaped fibers were used to perform real-time characterization of optical absorption and refractive index modulation of metal oxides in response to NH3 from the room temperature to 500°C. Measurement results reveals that the redox reaction of the nanostructured metal oxides exposed to a reactive gas NH3 induces much stronger changes in optical absorption as opposed to changes in the refractive index. Results presented in this paper provide important guidance for fiber optic chemical sensing designs based on metal oxide nanomaterials. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

This Letter presents an all-optical high-temperature flow sensor based on hot-wire anemometry. High-attenuation fibers (HAFs) were used as the heating elements. High-temperature-stable regenerated fiber Bragg gratings were inscribed in HAFs and in standard telecom fibers as temperature sensors. Using in-fiber light as both the heating power source and the interrogation light source, regenerative fiber Bragg grating sensors were used to gauge the heat transfer from an optically powered heating element induced by the gas flow. Reliable gas flow measurements were demonstrated between 0.066 m/s and 0.66 m/s from the room temperature to 800°C. This Letter presents a compact, low-cost, and multiflexible approach to measure gas flow for high-temperature harsh environments. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

An ultrafast thulium-doped fiber laser with large net normal dispersion has been developed to produce dissipative soliton and noise-like outputs at 1.9 μm. The mode-locked operation was enabled by using single-wall carbon nanotubes as saturable absorber for all-fiber configuration. Dissipative soliton in normal dispersion produced by the fiber laser oscillator was centered at 1947 nm with 4.1-nm FWHM bandwidth and 0.45 nJ/pulse. The output dissipative soliton pulses were compressed to 2.3 ps outside the laser cavity. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

An all-fiber passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber ring oscillator is constructed using optically deposited few layer graphene micro-sheets as the saturable absorber (SA). The mode-lock operation was achieved by 130-mW pump power at 1.5-μm. The fiber oscillator produces 2.1-ps soliton pulse output with 80-pJ per pulse energy. The 3-dB bandwidth of the laser output was measured as 2.2-nm. The RF signal-to-noise ratio of 50-dB and sub 20-Hz 3-dB bandwidth of the laser output confirms the stable laser operation with low time jittering. This paper shows that graphene can be an effective saturable absorber for the development of mid-IR fiber mode-locked laser. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

This Letter presents distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber lasers for high-temperature operation at 750°C. Thermally regenerated fiber gratings were used as the feedback elements to construct an erbium-doped DBR fiber laser. The output power of the fiber laser can reach 1 mW at all operating temperatures. The output power fluctuation tested at 750°C was 1.06% over a period of 7 hours. The thermal regeneration grating fabrication process opens new possibilities to design and to implement fiber laser sensors for extreme environments. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

We report a high-temperature-resistant distributed Bragg reflector fiber laser using thermally regenerated gratings. The laser was characterized and tested to be capable of long-term lasing in high temperature environment up to 750°C. © OSA 2013.

We present spatially resolved Rayleigh scattering measurements in different polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers for high-temperature pressure sensing. The pressure-induced birefringence in the fiber cores is interrogated using polarization-resolved frequency-swept interferometry. The pressure responses of a PM photonic crystal fiber and a twin-air-hole PM fiber are investigated for a pressure range of 0 to 13.8 MPa (0-2000 psi) at room temperature and at temperatures as high as 800 °C. The proposed sensing system provides, for the first time to our knowledge, a truly distributed pressure-sensing solution for high-temperature applications. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

Spatially and spectrally resolved near-field images of the transverse mode patterns of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are obtained by confocal microscopy with optical spectrum analyzer. A non-circular internal effective index profile of the VCSEL is inferred from the observed wavelength splitting of the degenerated modes. Using the mode intensity patterns associated with their spectral information, an elliptical parabolic profile superposed to a step-like refractive index profile is extracted by fitting the internal structural parameters of VCSEL. Wavelength splitting of the degenerated ${\rm LG} 01 modes is calculated from the fitting results, and is found to be in reasonable accord with our experiment results. © 2012 IEEE.

This letter reports a fully distributed hydrogen sensing technique using Rayleigh backscattering in palladium (Pd) and copper (Cu) coated optical fiber. The local in-fiber strain changes due to Pd hydrogen absorptions are interrogated spatially resolved optical frequency domain reflectrometry measurements of the Rayleigh signals. Electrical power is used to induce heating in the Pd coating, which accelerates both the hydrogen response and the sensor recycling. This technique promises an inexpensive and truly distributed fiber solution for continuous hydrogen leak detection with centimeter spatial resolution at room and low temperatures. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

An optical hot-wire flow sensing grid is presented using a single piece of self-heated optical fiber to perform distributed flow measurement. The flow-induced temperature loss profiles along the fiber are interrogated by the in-fiber Rayleigh backscattering, and spatially resolved in millimeter resolution using optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). The flow rate, position, and flow direction are retrieved simultaneously. Both electrical and optical on-fiber heating were demonstrated to suit different flow sensing applications. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

This Letter reports on the fabrication of low-loss waveguides in gallium-lanthanum-sulfide chalcogenide glasses using an ultrafast laser. Spatial beam shaping and temporal pulse width tuning were used to optimize the guided mode profiles and optical loss of laser-written waveguides. Highly symmetric single-mode waveguides guiding at 1560 nm with a loss of 0.65 dB/cm were fabricated using 1.5 ps laser pulses. This Letter suggests a pathway to produce high quality optical waveguides in substrates with strong nonlinearity using the ultrafast laser direct writing technique. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We present a silicon based single optical element that is able to automatically generate desired laser beam polarizations and intensities for the holographic fabrication of woodpile-type photonic crystal templates. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold based reflective optics element is fabricated for the generation of five-beam interferences where four beams are arranged four-fold symmetrically around a central beam. Silicon chips in the inner surfaces of the mold are used to reflect the circularly or elliptically polarized beam into four side beams that are linearly polarized with electric fields normal to the incident plane, and reduce their laser intensities. Photonic crystal templates are holographically fabricated in a photosensitive polymer through this silicon-on-PDMS based single optical element and single beam based configuration. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We present a continuous liquid level sensing system for both room temperature and cryogenic fluids with millimeter spatial resolution. Change of in-fiber Rayleigh backscattering signal from the distinct thermal response of the heated sensing fiber in liquid and in air were interrogated and spatially resolved using the optical frequency domain reflectometry. Both electrical and optical heating techniques were investigated for cryogenic liquid applications at 4 K, 77 K, and the room temperature. The successful combination of self-heated fiber and wavelength-swept Rayleigh scattering interferometry provides, for the first time to our best knowledge, a truly distributed fuel gauge with high spatial resolution for cryogenic fuel storage, transportation, and management on ground and in space. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

Experimental results on tritium effusion, along with the tritium depth profiles, from hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and crystalline silicon (c-Si) tritiated in tritium (T2) gas at various temperatures and pressures are presented. The results indicate that tritium incorporation is a function of the material microstructure of the as-grown films, rather than the tritium exposure condition. The highest tritium concentration obtained is for a-Si:H deposited at a substrate temperature of 200°C. The tritium content is about 20 at. % on average with a penetration depth of about 50 nm. In contrast, tritium occluded in the c-Si is about 4 at. % with penetration depth of about 10 nm. The tritium concentration observed in a-Si:H and c-Si is much higher than the reported results for the post-hydrogenation process. β irradiation appears to catalyze the tritiation process and enhance tritium dissolution in the silicon matrix. The combination of tritium decay and β-induced ionizations results in formation of reactive species of tritium (tritium atoms, radicals, and ions) that readily adsorb on silicon. The electron bombardment of the silicon surface and subsurface renders it chemically active thereby promoting surface adsorption and subsurface diffusion of tritium, thus leading to tritium occlusion in the silicon matrix. Gaussian deconvolution of tritium effusion spectra yields two peaks for a-Si:H films tritiated at high temperature (250°C), one low temperature (LT) peak which is attributed to tritiated clusters and higher order tritides, and another high temperature peak which is attributed to monotritides. Activation energy of 2.6-4.0 eV for the LT peak was found. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

We report a combined holographic and nanoimprinting lithography technique to produce three-dimensional woodpile photonic crystal templates through only one single exposure. The interference lithography process uses an integratable diffractive optical element for large throughout 3D pattern manufacturing. The diffractive optical element consists of two layers of phase grating separated by an intermediate layer, fabricated by repeated nanoimprinting lithography, followed by an SU8 photoresist bonding technique. Grating periods, relative orientation, diffraction angle, and efficiency, as well as layer to layer phase delay, are well designed during manufacturing. By thermally optimizing the thickness of the intermediate layer, this paper demonstrates the fabrication of interconnected 3D photonic structures with arbitrary symmetry through a single laser exposure. The two-layer phase mask approach enables a CMOS-compatible monolithic integration of 3D photonic structures with other integrated optical elements and waveguides. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Through the use of a multi-layer phase mask to produce five-beam interference, three-dimensional photonic crystals can be formed through single exposure to a photoresist. In these holographically formed structures, the interconnectivity is controlled by the relative phase difference among contributing beams. Photonic band gaps are calculated and the simulation shows a maximum bandgap of 18% of the middle gap frequency when the phase difference is optimized. A three-layer phase mask is fabricated by placing a spacer layer between two orthogonally-orientated gratings. The phase difference is controlled by thermal-tuning of the spacer thickness. Photonic crystal templates are holographically fabricated in a photosensitive polymer using the phase mask.

This paper presents the wavelength dependence of two-photon polymerization in SU-8 between 720-780 nm. The study is performed by microstructuring SU-8 through a single-shot exposure of SU-8 to 140 fs tunable laser pulses with 80 MHz repetition rate, or by laser direct writing. Two-photon absorption is closely related to one-photon absorption in pristine SU-8. By careful design of the neighboring micro-structures, or by varying wet-processing parameters during development, undistorted and unbended 3D micro-structures have been fabricated through direct laser writing. © 2011 Author(s).

We present an array of aluminum-coated fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in high-attenuation fibers capable of measuring the liquid level in a cryogenic environment. The sensors are heated by the optical energy propagating in fiber core that is absorbed in high-attenuation fibers. Thermal responses of Bragg gratings to liquid nitrogen level at 77 K were observed. Precise control over the light absorption and heated FBG temperatures of individual level sensors using high-attenuation fibers enables multipoint liquid nitrogen level sensing using a single fiber and a single fiber feedthrough. © 2006 IEEE.

This Letter presents simulation and experimental results that explore bending insensitivity of fiber Bragg gratings in suspended-core optical fibers. The implementation of thin silica bridge in the fibers enhances index contrast of the fiber core and reduces bending-induced strain transfer to the fiber core. This fiber design lead to a reduction of over 7 times in strain-induced fiber Bragg grating resonant peak shifts in the suspended-core fiber compared with that in standard telecommunication fiber, and an 0:14dB bending loss at a bending radius of 6:35mm. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

A tapered fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometer sensor is presented to simultaneously measure liquid level and temperature. The transmission spectra shift with the change in immersed liquid level and environmental temperature. The liquid level difference of 190mm can be measured with millimetre resolution in 90mm-long linear range. The temperature response is discriminated from level response by simultaneously monitoring different interference orders at 1520 and 1620nm. Level sensitivities of -0.017 and -0.021nm/mm, and temperature sensitivities of 0.074 and 0.081nm/°C are achieved, respectively. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

This Letter presents simulation and experimental results of orientation-dependent transverse stress fiber sensors using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in four-hole suspended-core fibers. Resonant peak shifts and splitting of FBGs were studied as functions of the applied transverse load and fiber orientation. Both simulation and experimental results revealed that the response of FBGs in suspended-core fibers is sensitive to both the orientation and magnitude of an applied transverse stress. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

We present thermally regenerated fiber Bragg gratings in air-hole microstructured fibers for high-temperature, hydrostatic pressure measurements. High-temperature stable gratings were regenerated during an 800 °C annealing process from hydrogen-loaded Type I seed gratings. The wavelength shifts and separation of grating peaks were studied as functions of external hydrostatic pressure from 15 to 2400 psi, and temperature from 24 °C to 800 °C. This Letter demonstrates a multiplexible pressure and temperature sensor technology for high-temperature environments using a single optical fiber feedthrough. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

Reflective metal-lined capillary waveguides are useful for laser-power delivery or for collecting scattered light in sensing applications. We theoretically examine the multimode propagation of polarized light in largediameter, metallized, capillary waveguides using a new perturbation technique valid for all waveguide modes. This modeling permits prediction of the collection efficiency of Raman or fluorescent light produced in the waveguide at all angles. These theoretical results are supported by measuring the intensity and angular distribution of collected scattered gas-Raman Stokes power. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

We present a new design of an all-fiber sensor system to enhance the low-temperature sensing performance of cryogenic fuel. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are inscribed in high attenuation fibers (HAFs), which absorb in-fiber light to raise the local sensor temperature in a cryogenic environment. The heated sensor displays improved sensitivity and response time to measure multiple parameters. Two sensing applications are described in this paper. First, a HAF-FBG sensor coated with palladium is used to detect hydrogen concentration well below the 4% explosion limit at 173 K. Second, an array of three aluminum-coated sensors is capable of measuring the liquid level at 77 K. In addition, through the selection of the length and attenuation coefficient of HAF, numerous FBG sensors can be multiplexed on a single fiber for multipoint sensing using a single fiber feedthrough. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We report on the thermal stability of both structural and optical micromodifications created by ultrafast laser written filaments in sapphire crystals. By using the Cr3+ traces as optical probes, we have concluded that the filaments are constituted by both reversible and nonreversible defects with very different spatial locations. The strain field measured from the analysis of R lines has been found to be erased at the same time when the reversible centers are recombined (∼1100 °C). This fact seems to indicate that these defects act as pinning centers for the induced stress. Furthermore, we have found that the waveguide generated in the proximity of the filament disappear for annealing temperatures above 1100 °C. This clearly supports the assumption that waveguiding is produced by the strain stress induced refractive index increment based on the dominant electronic polarizability enhancement. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We present fiber Bragg grating pressure sensors in air-hole microstructured fibers for high-temperature operation above 800°C. An ultrafast laser was used to inscribe Type II grating in two-hole optical fibers. The fiber Bragg grating resonance wavelength shift and peak splits were studied as a function of external hydrostatic pressure from 15 psi to 2000 psi. The grating pressure sensor shows stable and reproducible operation above 800°C. We demonstrate a multiplexible pressure sensor technology for a high-temperature environment using a single fiber and a single-fiber feedthrough. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

We present the design of an air hole microstructured photonic crystal fiber for pressure sensing applications. The air-hole photonic crystal lattices were designed to produce a large intrinsic birefringence of 1.16x10-3. The impact of the surrounding air holes for pressure sensing to the propagation mode profiles and indices were studied and improved, which ensures single mode propagation in the fiber core defined by the photonic crystal lattice. An air hole matrix and a practical chemical etching process during the fiber perform preparation stage is proposed to produce an optical fiber with a birefringence-pressure coefficient of 43.89×10-6MPa-1 or a fiber Bragg grating pressure responsivity of 44.15 pm/MPa, which is a 17 times improvement over previous photonic crystal fiber designs. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

This paper reports on the observation of tritium-powered beta-luminescence (BL) in ZnO nanowires (NWs). The ZnO NWs, prepared using standard vapour-liquid-solid growth, were exposed to tritium betas emanating from a tritium gas source over a range of pressures and from a scandium tritide source. BL spectra were measured at room temperature, showing increasing signal strength with increasing tritium pressure and thus beta energy flux. Complementary photoluminescence studies with and without hydrogen impregnation indicate the quenching effect of hydrogen in ZnO NWs and thus reduced emission. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Large-area three-dimensional Penrose-type photonic quasicrystals are fabricated through a holographic lithography method using a lab-made diffractive optical element and a single laser exposure. The diffractive optical element consists of five polymer gratings symmetrically orientated around a central opening. The fabricated Penrose-type photonic quasicrystal shows ten-fold rotational symmetry. The Laue diffraction pattern from the photonic quasi-crystal is observed to be similar to that of the traditional alloy quasi-crystal. A golden ratio of 1.618 is also observed for the radii of diffraction rings, which has not been observed before in artificial photonic quasicrystals. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

This paper presents the capability of direct laser writing of complex defect structures in holographically formed three-dimensional photonic crystals in dipentaerythritol penta/hexaacrylate (DPHPA) monomers mixed with photoinitiators. The three-dimensional photonic crystal template was fabricated through prism-based holographic lithography. Defect structures are fabricated through the two-photon polymerization excited by a femtosecond laser. The strengths of two optical lithographic techniques are combined with holographic lithography providing a rapid and large area microfabrication and two-photon lithography providing flexibility in fabrication of defect structures. The optical fabrication process is simplified in the negative tone DPHPA without prebake and postexposure bake as is required of SU-8 while maintaining a capability for constructing photonic structures with small features. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We present a liquid level sensing system for cryogenic fluids based on an array of aluminum-coated fiber Bragg gratings written in high-attenuation fibers (HAFs) interrogated by frequency-shifted interferometry (FSI). The sensors are heated up optically through the absorption of light at the core of the HAF sections. The distinct thermal response of sensors in the liquid from that in the gas provides an unambiguous means to detect the liquid level. FSI allows the sensors to have overlapped spectral response, and, therefore, has the potential of accommodating a larger number of sensors in the array. The measurement of liquid nitrogen level using this system was experimentally demonstrated. The successful combination of aluminum-coated HAF Bragg grating sensors and the FSI technique promises a viable solution for liquid level sensor networks at cryogenic temperatures. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

We report on the fabrication of buried cannel waveguides in Sapphire crystals by 250-kHz high repetition rate ultrafast laser inscription with 385 nm pulses. The propagation properties of the waveguides were studied as a function of the writing conditions. The micro-fluorescence analysis of the R lines generated by trace Cr3+ dopant in Sapphire is used to elucidate the micro-structural modifications induced in the crystal network. It is revealed that waveguide has been formed due to local dilatation of the Sapphire network generated in the surroundings of the focal volume. The refractive index increment due to the dilatation induced electronic polarizability enhancement has been estimated to be of the order of Δn ≈10-4. © 2009 Optical Society of America.

This paper demonstrates an approach for laser holographic patterning of three-dimensional photonic lattice structures using a single diffractive optical element. The diffractive optical element is fabricated by recording gratings in a photosensitive polymer using a two-beam interference method and has four diffraction gratings oriented with four-fold symmetry around a central opening. Four first-order diffracted beams from the gratings and one non-diffracted central beam overlap and form a threedimensional interference pattern. The phase of one side beam is delayed by inserting a thin piece of microscope glass slide into the beam. By rotating the glass slide, thus tuning the phase of the side beam, the five beam interference pattern changes from face-center tetragonal symmetry into diamond-like lattice symmetry with an optimal bandgap. Three-dimensional photonic crystal templates are produced in a photoresist and show the phase tuning effect for bandgap optimization. Furthermore, by integrating an amplitude mask in the central opening, line defects are produced within the photonic crystal template. This paper presents the first experimental demonstration on the holographic fabrication approach of three-dimensional photonic crystal templates with functional defects by a single laser exposure using a single optical element. ©2009 Optical Society of America.

A palladium-coated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in high attenuation fiber (HAF) capable of measuring hydrogen concentration at -150 °C, well below the 4% explosion limit, is presented. The low-temperature performance of the sensor was improved by heating the gratings as much as 300 K above the ambient temperature with highly attenuated infrared laser light. The sensitivity and response time of the FBG hydrogen sensor were studied as functions of fiber temperature. Through the selection of length and the loss per meter of the HAF, the self-heating scheme demonstrated here enables numerous FBG hydrogen sensors to be multiplexed in a single fiber for multipoint hydrogen sensing using a single fiber feedthrough. © 2009 IEEE.

Three-dimensional diodes fabricated by electrochemical etching are exposed to tritium gas at pressures from 0.05 to 33 atm at room temperature to examine its power scaling performance. It is shown that the three-dimensional microporous structure overcomes the self-absorption limited saturation of beta flux at high tritium pressures. These results are contrasted against the three-dimensional device powered in one instance by tritium absorbed in the near surface region of the three-dimensional microporous network, and in another by a planar scandium tritide foil. These findings suggest that direct tritium occlusion in the near surface of three-dimensional diode can improve the specific power production. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

The microstructural changes associated with the formation of lithium tantalate waveguides after high repetition rate ultrafast laser inscription has been investigated by confocal micro-Raman experiments. While the laser beam focal volume is characterized by significant lattice damage, no reduction of Raman mode strength has been observed at the guiding region, suggesting the preservation of the nonlinear optical coefficient in the waveguide. A general blueshift of the Raman modes has been observed at the guiding region, suggesting lattice compression as the dominant mechanism of waveguide formation. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

Accurate, real-time measurement of the dilute constituents of a gaseous mixture poses a significant challenge usually relegated to mass spectrometry. Here, spontaneous Raman backscattering is used to detect low pressure molecular gases. Rapid detection of gases in the ∼100 parts in 106 (ppm) range is described. Improved sensitivity is brought about by use of a hollow-core, photonic bandgap fiber gas cell in the back-scattering configuration to increase collection efficiency and an image-plane aperture to greatly reduce silica-Raman background noise. Spatial and spectral properties of the silica noise were examined with a two-dimensional CCD detector array. © 2009 Optical Society of America.

A smoke and particle ionization detector using tritiated amorphous silicon film as the radiation source is demonstrated. The ion chamber design includes both bipolar and unipolar region; the unipolar region is defined as the volume space extending beyond the range of ionizing particles. Attachment of ions to particulate matter in the unipolar region considerably reduces the mobility of the carriers, thus forming a space charge cloud accompanied by a reduction in the electrical field strength, thereby enhancing the particulate detection responsivity. Tritium βs have a maximum range of about 6 mm in air, which makes the detector compact. Owing to the potential of increased specific activity, it results in a gamma-free detector with improved sensitivity. The results show that this gamma-free detector is several-fold to forty-fold more responsive than traditional ionization detectors using Am-241. In addition, this ion chamber can function as a dual detector having both photoelectric and ionization detector responsivities.

We report the fabrication of waveguides in lithium tantalate using a 250 kHz high-repetition rate ultrafast laser at 771 nm and the characterization of the resulting laser induced structure with second harmonic microscopy. Waveguides operating at the 1.5 μm telecommunication wavelength were formed above and below the focal volume using pulse energies ranging from 100 to 1.6 J and translation speeds from 100 μms to 5 mms. The second harmonic microscopy reveals no degradation of the electro-optic coefficient in the guiding region above the focal volume. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Results for the effusion and outgassing of tritium from tritiated hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H:T) films are presented. The samples were grown by dc-saddle field glow discharge at various substrate temperatures between 150 and 300 °C. The tracer property of radioactive tritium is used to detect tritium release. Tritium effusion measurements are performed in a nonvacuum ion chamber and are found to yield similar results as reported for standard high vacuum technique. The results suggest for decreasing substrate temperature the growth of material with an increasing concentration of voids. These data are corroborated by analysis of infrared absorption data in terms of microstructure parameters. For material of low substrate temperature (and high void concentration) tritium outgassing in air at room temperature was studied, and it was found that after 600 h about 0.2% of the total hydrogen (hydrogen+tritium) content is released. Two rate limiting processes are identified. The first process, fast tritium outgassing with a time constant of 15 h, seems to be related to surface desorption of tritiated water (HTO) with a free energy of desorption of 1.04 eV. The second process, slow tritium outgassing with a time constant of 200-300 h, appears to be limited by oxygen diffusivity in a growing oxide layer. This material of lowest H stability would lose half of the hydrogen after 60 years. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper, we report a new design and fabrication of an integrated two-layer phase mask for five-beam holographic fabrication of three-dimensional photonic crystal templates. The phase mask consists of two layers of orthogonally oriented gratings produced in a polymer. The vertical spatial separation between two layers produces a phase shift among diffractive laser beams, which enables the holographic fabrication of interconnected three-dimensional photonic structures. A three-dimensional photonic crystal template was fabricated using the two-layer phase mask and was consistent with simulations based on the five beam interference. The reported method simplifies the fabrication of photonic crystals and is amendable for massive production and chip-scale integration of three-dimensional photonic structures. © 2008 Optical Society of American.

A tritium exposure apparatus has been designed and built for the purposes of generating a high-pressure tritium atmosphere at 523 K. The loading system consists of a uranium tritide storage bed, an intermediate tritium transfer chamber filled with 5A molecular sieve, and the sample exposure chamber. The loading system resides in a sealed glovebox with a nitrogen atmosphere that is continually purged through a Glovebox Clean-up System. The tritium used in each loading experiment is approximately 6000 Ci (22 TBq). The process entails transferring the tritium inventory from the uranium storage bed to the cryogenically cooled (77 K) molecular sieve chamber. The molecular sieve at liquid nitrogen temperature is capable of adsorbing tritium to densities of 290 Ci/gram at one atmosphere. At 523 K a maximum tritium pressure of 21 MPa is achieved. The loading apparatus is used to develop high-density radioactive isotope fuel for self-powered microelectronic and micromechanical devices. This paper presents the design specifics of the tritium exposure apparatus, the steps taken in generating the high-temperature, high-pressure tritium atmosphere and the performance characteristics of the apparatus. Additionally, the handling practices and equipment utilized to conduct the tests safely are presented.

Spontaneous gas-phase Raman scattering using a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) for both the gas cell and the Stokes light collector is reported. It was predicted that the HC-PBF configuration would yield several hundred times signal enhancement in Stokes power over a traditional free-space configuration because of increased interaction lengths and large collection angles. Predictions were verified by using nitrogen Stokes signals. The utility of this system was demonstrated by measuring the Raman signals as functions of concentration for major species in natural gas. This allowed photomultiplier-based measurements of natural gas species in relatively short integration times, measurements that were previously difficult with other systems. © 2008 Optical Society of America.

This paper reports the experimental approaches to the fabrication of two-layer integrated phase masks and the fabrication of photonic crystal templates using the phase mask based on holographic lithography technique. The photonic crystal template is formed by exposing photoresist mixtures to five-beam interference patterns generated through the phase mask. The fabricated phase mask consists of two layers of orthogonally oriented gratings produced in a liquid crystal and photoresist mixture. A polymerization-induced phase separation preserves the grating structure during the exposure. The vertical spatial separation between two layers of gratings produces a phase difference among diffracted laser beams, which enables the holographic fabrication of diamondlike photonic crystal structures. The fabricated photonic crystal structure is consistent with simulations based on the five-beam interference. The two-layer phase mask opens up an opportunity of direct printing photonic structures. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.
