Stress distributions and the corresponding fracture patterns and evolutions in the microstructures strongly influence the load-carrying capabilities of composite structures. This work introduces an enhanced phase-field fracture model incorporating interface decohesion to simulate fracture propagation and interactions at material interfaces and within the constituents of composite microstructures. The proposed method employs an interface-modified reproducing kernel (IM-RK) approximation for handling cross-interface discontinuities constructed from image voxels and guided by Support Vector Machine (SVM) ma-terial classification. The numerical models are directly generated from X-ray microtomography image voxels, guided by SVM using voxel color code information. Additionally, a strain energy-based phase field variable is introduced, eliminating the need to solve coupled field problems. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated in modeling crack growth both along interfaces and across matrix and inclusion domains and in predicting the corresponding structural-scale mechanical behavior in composite structures. While shape optimization using isogeometric shells exhibits appealing features by integrating design geometries and analysis models, challenges arise when addressing computer-aided design (CAD) geometries comprised of multiple non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) patches, which are common in practice. The intractability stems from surface intersections within these CAD models. In this paper, we develop an approach for shape optimization of non-matching isogeometric shells incorporating intersection movement. Separately parametrized NURBS surfaces are modeled using Kirchhoff--Love shell theory and coupled using a penalty-based formulation. The optimization scheme allows shell patches to move without preserving relative location with other members during the shape optimization. This flexibility is achieved through an implicit state function, and analytical sensitivities are derived for the relative movement of shell patches. The introduction of differentiable intersections expands the design space and overcomes challenges associated with large mesh distortion, particularly when optimal shapes involve significant movement of patch intersections in physical space. Throughout optimization iterations, all members within the shell structures maintain the NURBS geometry representation, enabling efficient integration of analysis and design models. The optimization approach leverages the multilevel design concept by selecting a refined model for accurate analysis from a coarse design model while maintaining the same geometry. Experimental observations suggest that the force output of the skeletal muscle tissue can be correlated to the intra-muscular pressure generated by the muscle belly. However, pressure often proves difficult to measure through in-vivo tests. Simulations on the other hand, offer a tool to model muscle contractions and analyze the relationship between muscle force generation and deformations as well as pressure outputs, enabling us to gain insight into correlations among experimentally measurable quantities such as principal and volumetric strains, and the force output. In this work, a correlation study is performed using Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients on the force output of the skeletal muscle, the principal and volumetric strains experienced by the muscle and the pressure developed within the muscle belly as the muscle tissue undergoes isometric contractions due to varying activation profiles. The study reveals strong correlations between force output and the strains at all locations of the belly, irrespective of the type of activation profile used. This observation enables estimation on the contribution of various muscle groups to the total force by the experimentally measurable principal and volumetric strains in the muscle belly. It is also observed that pressure does not correlate well with force output due to stress relaxation near the boundary of muscle belly.

In deep geological repositories for high level nuclear waste with close canister spacings, bentonite buffers can experience temperatures higher than 100 {\deg}C. In this range of extreme temperatures, phenomenological constitutive laws face limitations in capturing the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior of the bentonite, since the pre-defined functional constitutive laws often lack generality and flexibility to capture a wide range of complex coupling phenomena as well as the effects of stress state and path dependency. In this work, a deep neural network (DNN)-based soil-water retention curve (SWRC) of bentonite is introduced and integrated into a Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM) for conducting THM simulations of the bentonite buffer. The DNN-SWRC model incorporates temperature as an additional input variable, allowing it to learn the relationship between suction and degree of saturation under the general non-isothermal condition, which is difficult to represent using a phenomenological SWRC. For effective modeling of the tank-scale test, new axisymmetric Reproducing Kernel basis functions enriched with singular Dirichlet enforcement representing heater placement and an effective convective heat transfer coefficient representing thin-layer composite tank construction are developed. This work presents a multi-resolution physics-informed recurrent neural network (MR PI-RNN), for simultaneous prediction of musculoskeletal (MSK) motion and parameter identification of the MSK systems. The MSK application was selected as the model problem due to its challenging nature in mapping the high-frequency surface electromyography (sEMG) signals to the low-frequency body joint motion controlled by the MSK and muscle contraction dynamics. The proposed method utilizes the fast wavelet transform to decompose the mixed frequency input sEMG and output joint motion signals into nested multi-resolution signals. The prediction model is subsequently trained on coarser-scale input-output signals using a gated recurrent unit (GRU), and then the trained parameters are transferred to the next level of training with finer-scale signals. These training processes are repeated recursively under a transfer-learning fashion until the full-scale training (i.e., with unfiltered signals) is achieved, while satisfying the underlying dynamic equilibrium. Numerical examples on recorded subject data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in generating a physics-informed forward-dynamics surrogate, which yields higher accuracy in motion predictions of elbow flexion-extension of an MSK system compared to the case with single-scale training. This work presents an approach for automating the discretization and approximation procedures in constructing digital representations of composites from Micro-CT images featuring intricate microstructures. The proposed method is guided by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification, offering an effective approach for discretizing microstructural images. An SVM soft margin training process is introduced as a classification of heterogeneous material points, and image segmentation is accomplished by identifying support vectors through a local regularized optimization problem. In addition, an Interface-Modified Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (IM-RKPM) is proposed for appropriate approximations of weak discontinuities across material interfaces. The proposed method modifies the smooth kernel functions with a regularized heavy-side function concerning the material interfaces to alleviate Gibb's oscillations. This IM-RKPM is formulated without introducing duplicated degrees of freedom associated with the interface nodes commonly needed in the conventional treatments of weak discontinuities in the meshfree methods. Moreover, IM-RKPM can be implemented with various domain integration techniques, such as Stabilized Conforming Nodal Integration (SCNI). We present the results of the neutron star X-ray binary system Cen X-3 performed by $Insight$-HXMT with two observations during 2017 and 2018. During these two observations, the source reached a X-ray luminosity of $\sim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ from 2 -- 105 keV. The analysis of the broadband X-ray spectrum reports the presence of two cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs) with the fundamental line at $\sim$ 28 keV and the harmonic line at $\sim 47 $ keV. The multiple lines exist by fittings with different continuum models, like the absorbed NPEX model and a power-law with high energy exponential cutoff model. This is the first time that both fundamental and harmonic lines are detected in Cen X-3. We also show evidence of two cyclotron lines in the phase-resolved spectrum of Cen X-3. The CRSF and continuum spectral parameters show evolution with the pulse profile, and the two line centroid energy ratio does not change significantly and locates in a narrow value range of $1.6-1.7$ over the pulse phase. We present a quasi-conforming embedded reproducing kernel particle method (QCE-RKPM) for modeling heterogeneous materials that makes use of techniques not available to mesh-based methods such as the finite element method (FEM) and avoids many of the drawbacks in current embedded and immersed formulations which are based on meshed methods. The different material domains are discretized independently thus avoiding time-consuming, conformal meshing. In this approach, the superposition of foreground (inclusion) and background (matrix) domain integration smoothing cells are corrected by a quasi-conforming quadtree subdivision on the background integration smoothing cells. Due to the non-conforming nature of the background integration smoothing cells near the material interfaces, a variationally consistent (VC) correction for domain integration is introduced to restore integration constraints and thus optimal convergence rates at a minor computational cost. Additional interface integration smoothing cells with area (volume) correction, while non-conforming, can be easily introduced to further enhance the accuracy and stability of the Galerkin solution using VC integration on non-conforming cells. To properly approximate the weak discontinuity across the material interface by a penalty-free Nitsche's method with enhanced coercivity, the interface nodes on the surface of the foreground discretization are also shared with the background discretization. As such, there are no tunable parameters, such as those involved in the penalty type method, to enforce interface compatibility in this approach. The advantage of this meshfree formulation is that it avoids many of the instabilities in mesh-based immersed and embedded methods. In this article, we introduce the interval optimization problems (IOPs) on Hadamard manifolds as well as study the relationship between them and the interval variational inequalities. To achieve the theoretical results, we build up some new concepts about $gH$-directional derivative and $gH$-G\^ateaux differentiability of interval valued functions and their properties on the Hadamard manifolds. Integrating multiple properties in a single system is crucial for the continuous developments in electronic devices. However, some physical properties are mutually exclusive in nature. Here, we report the coexistence of two seemingly mutually exclusive properties-polarity and two-dimensional conductivity-in ferroelectric Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ thin films at the LaAlO$_3$/Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ interface at room temperature. The polarity of a ~3.2 nm Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ thin film is preserved with a two-dimensional mobile carrier density of ~0.05 electron per unit cell. We show that the electronic reconstruction resulting from the competition between the built-in electric field of LaAlO$_3$ and the polarization of Ba$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.8}$TiO$_3$ is responsible for this unusual two-dimensional conducting polar phase. Laser decoherence limits the stability of optical clocks by broadening the observable resonance linewidths and adding noise during the dead time between clock probes. Correlation spectroscopy avoids these limitations by measuring correlated atomic transitions between two ensembles, which provides a frequency difference measurement independent of laser noise. Here, we apply this technique to perform stability measurements between two independent clocks based on the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{}^3P_0$ transition in $^{27}$Al$^+$. By stabilizing the dominant sources of differential phase noise between the two clocks, we observe coherence between them during synchronous Ramsey interrogations as long as 8 s at a frequency of $1.12\times10^{15}$ Hz. The observed contrast in the correlation spectroscopy signal is consistent with the 20.6 s $^3P_0$ state lifetime and supports a measurement instability of $(1.8\pm0.5)\times 10^{-16}/\sqrt{\tau/\textrm{s}}$ for averaging periods longer than the probe duration when deadtime is negligible., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures + supplemental material 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Trapped ions are a promising candidate for large scale quantum computation. Several systems have been built in both academic and industrial settings to implement modestly-sized quantum algorithms. Efficient cooling of the motional degrees of freedom is a key requirement for high-fidelity quantum operations using trapped ions. Here, we present a technique whereby individual ions are used to cool individual motional modes in parallel, reducing the time required to bring an ion chain to its motional ground state. We demonstrate this technique experimentally and develop a model to understand the efficiency of our parallel sideband cooling technique compared to more traditional methods. This technique is applicable to any system using resolved sideband cooling of co-trapped atomic species and only requires individual addressing of the trapped particles., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Electronic correlation is believed to play an important role in exotic phenomena such as insulator-metal transition, colossal magneto resistance and high temperature superconductivity in correlated electron systems. Recently, it has been shown that electronic correlation may also be responsible for the formation of unconventional plasmons. Herewith, using a combination of angle-dependent spectroscopic ellipsometry, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Hall measurements all as a function of temperature supported by first-principles calculations, the existence of low-loss high-energy correlated plasmons accompanied by spectral weight transfer, a fingerprint of electronic correlation, in topological insulator (Bi$_{0.8}$Sb$_{0.2}$)$_2$Se$_3$ is revealed. Upon cooling, the density of free charge carriers in the surface states decreases whereas those in the bulk states increase, and that the newly-discovered correlated plasmons are key to explaining this phenomenon. Our result shows the importance of electronic correlation in determining new correlated plasmons and opens a new path in engineering plasmonic-based topologically-insulating devices.

The field of quantum computing has grown from concept to demonstration devices over the past 20 years. Universal quantum computing offers efficiency in approaching problems of scientific and commercial interest, such as factoring large numbers, searching databases, simulating intractable models from quantum physics, and optimizing complex cost functions. Here, we present an 11-qubit fully-connected, programmable quantum computer in a trapped ion system composed of 13 $^{171}$Yb$^{+}$ ions. We demonstrate average single-qubit gate fidelities of 99.5$\%$, average two-qubit-gate fidelities of 97.5$\%$, and state preparation and measurement errors of 0.7$\%$. To illustrate the capabilities of this universal platform and provide a basis for comparison with similarly-sized devices, we compile the Bernstein-Vazirani (BV) and Hidden Shift (HS) algorithms into our native gates and execute them on the hardware with average success rates of 78$\%$ and 35$\%$, respectively. These algorithms serve as excellent benchmarks for any type of quantum hardware, and show that our system outperforms all other currently available hardware., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We have measured the quadratic Zeeman coefficient for the ${^{1}S_{0} \leftrightarrow {^{3}P_{0}}}$ optical clock transition in $^{27}$Al$^{+}$, $C_{2}=-71.944(24)$~MHz/T$^{2}$, and the unperturbed hyperfine splitting of the $^{25}$Mg$^{+}$ $^{2}S_{1/2}$ ground electronic state, $\Delta W / h = 1~788~762~752.85(13)$~Hz, with improved uncertainties. Both constants are relevant to the evaluation of the $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ quantum-logic clock systematic uncertainty. The measurement of $C_{2}$ is in agreement with a previous measurement and a new calculation at the $1~\sigma$ level. The measurement of $\Delta W$ is in good agreement with a recent measurement and differs from a previously published result by approximately $2\sigma$. With the improved value for $\Delta W$, we deduce an improved value for the nuclear-to-electronic g-factor ratio $g_{I}/g_{J} = 9.299 ~308 ~313(60) \times 10^{-5}$ and the nuclear g-factor for the $^{25}$Mg nucleus $g_{I} = 1.861 ~957 ~82(28) \times 10^{-4}$. Using the values of $C_{2}$ and $\Delta W$ presented here, we derive a quadratic Zeeman shift of the $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ quantum-logic clock of $\Delta \nu / \nu = -(9241.8 \pm 3.7) \times 10^{-19}$, for a bias magnetic field of $B \approx 0.12$~mT., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, updated

We describe a framework for calculating the frequency shift and uncertainty of trapped-ion optical atomic clocks caused by background-gas collisions, and apply this framework to an $^{27}$Al$^+$ clock to enable a total fractional systematic uncertainty below $10^{-18}$. For this clock, with 38(19) nPa of room temperature H$_2$ background gas, we find that collisional heating generates a non-thermal distribution of motional states with a mean time-dilation shift of order $10^{-16}$ at the end of a 150 ms probe, which is not detected by sideband thermometry energy measurements. However, the contribution of collisional heating to the spectroscopy signal is highly suppressed and we calculate the BGC shift to be $-0.6(2.4)\times 10^{-19}$, where the shift is due to collisional heating time-dilation and the uncertainty is dominated by the worst case $\pm \pi/2$ bound used for collisional phase shift of the $^{27}$Al$^+$ superposition state. We describe an optical atomic clock based on quantum-logic spectroscopy of the $^1$S$_0$ $\leftrightarrow$ $^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ with a systematic uncertainty of ${9.4 \times 10^{-19}}$ and a frequency stability of ${1.2\times10^{-15}/\sqrt{\tau}}$. A $^{25}$Mg$^{+}$ ion is simultaneously trapped with the $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ ion and used for sympathetic cooling and state readout. Improvements in a new trap have led to reduced secular motion heating, compared to previous $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ clocks, enabling clock operation with ion secular motion near the three-dimensional ground state. Operating the clock with a lower trap drive frequency has reduced excess micromotion compared to previous $^{27}$Al$^{+}$ clocks. Both of these improvements have led to a reduced time-dilation shift uncertainty. We report on Raman sideband cooling of ${^{25}\text{Mg}^+}$ to sympathetically cool the secular modes of motion in a $^{25}\text{Mg}^+$-$^{27}\!\text{Al}^+$ two-ion pair to near the three-dimensional (3D) ground state. The evolution of the Fock-state distribution during the cooling process is studied using a rate-equation simulation, and various heating sources that limit the efficiency of 3D sideband cooling in our system are discussed. We characterize the residual energy and heating rates of all of the secular modes of motion and estimate a secular motion time-dilation shift of ${-(1.9 \pm 0.1)\times 10^{-18}}$ for an ${^{27}\text{Al}^+}$ clock at a typical clock probe duration of $150$ ms. The observation of magnetic interaction at the interface between nonmagnetic oxides has attracted much attention in recent years. In this report, we show that the Kondo-like scattering at the SrTiO3-based conducting interface is enhanced by increasing the lattice mismatch and growth oxygen pressure PO2. For the 26-unit-cell LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interface with lattice mismatch being 3.0%, the Kondo-like scattering is observed when PO2 is beyond 1 mTorr. By contrast, when the lattice mismatch is reduced to 1.0% at the (La0.3Sr0.7)(Al0.65Ta0.35)O3/SrTiO3 (LSAT/STO) interface, the metallic state is always preserved up to PO2 of 100 mTorr. The data from Hall measurement and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy reveal that the larger amount of localized Ti3+ ions are formed at the LAO/STO interface compared to LSAT/STO. Those localized Ti3+ ions with unpaired electrons can be spin-polarized to scatter mobile electrons, responsible for the Kondo-like scattering observed at the LAO/STO interface., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

We report very large bandgap enhancement in SrTiO3 (STO) films (fabricated by pulsed laser deposition below 800 {\deg}C), which can be up to 20% greater than the bulk value, depending on the deposition temperature. The origin is comprehensively investigated and finally attributed to Sr/Ti antisite point defects, supported by density functional theory calculations. More importantly, the bandgap enhancement can be utilized to tailor the electronic and magnetic phases of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in STO-based interface systems. For example, the oxygen-vacancy-induced 2DEG (2DEG-V) at the interface between amorphous LaAlO3 and STO films is more localized and the ferromagnetic order in the STO-film-based 2DEG-V can be clearly seen from low-temperature magnetotransport measurements. This opens an attractive path to tailor electronic, magnetic and optical properties of STO-based oxide interface systems under intensive focus in the oxide electronics community. The relative importance of atomic defects and electron transfer in explaining conductivity at the crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface has been a topic of debate. Metallic interfaces with similar electronic properties produced by amorphous oxide overlayers on SrTiO3 have called in question the original polarization catastrophe model. We resolve the issue by a comprehensive comparison of (100)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates with crystalline and amorphous overlayers of LaAlO3 of different thicknesses prepared under different oxygen pressures. For both types of overlayers, there is a critical thickness for the appearance of conductivity, but its value is always 4 unit cells (around 1.6 nm) for the oxygen-annealed crystalline case, whereas in the amorphous case, the critical thickness could be varied in the range 0.5 to 6 nm according to the deposition conditions. Subsequent ion milling of the overlayer restores the insulating state for the oxygen-annealed crystalline heterostructures but not for the amorphous ones. Oxygen post-annealing removes the oxygen vacancies, and the interfaces become insulating in the amorphous case. However, the interfaces with a crystalline overlayer remain conducting with reduced carrier density. These results demonstrate that oxygen vacancies are the dominant source of mobile carriers when the LaAlO3 overlayer is amorphous, while both oxygen vacancies and polarization catastrophe contribute to the interface conductivity in unannealed crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, and the polarization catastrophe alone accounts for the conductivity in oxygen-annealed crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. Furthermore, we find that the crystallinity of the LaAlO3 layer is crucial for the polarization catastrophe mechanism in the case of crystalline LaAlO3 overlayers., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We perform first principles calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy in the five L10 FePt samples studied experimentally by Ding et al. [J. App. Phys. 97, 10H303 (2005)]. The effect of temperature-induced spin fluctuations is estimated by scaling the MAE down according to previous Langevin dynamics simulations. Including chemical disorder as given in experiment, the experimental correlation between MAE and lattice mismatch is qualitatively well reproduced. Moreover we determine the chemical order parameters that reproduce exactly the experimental MAE of each sample. It is shown that, in the liquid-filled hollow core of a single-mode photonic crystal fiber, a micron-sized particle can be held stably against a fluidic counter-flow using radiation pressure, and moved to and fro (over 10s of cm) by ramping the laser power up and down. The results represent a major advance over previous work on particle transport in optically multimode liquid-filled fibers, in which the fluctuating transverse field pattern renders the radiation and trapping forces unpredictable. The counter-flowing liquid can be loaded with sequences of chemicals in precisely controlled concentrations and doses, making possible studies of single particles, vesicles or cells.

In this paper, a wavelet-based iterative learning control (WILC) scheme with Fuzzy PD feedback is presented for a pneumatic control system with nonsmooth nonlinearities and uncertain parameters. The wavelet transform is employed to extract the learnable dynamics from measured output signal before it can be used to update the control profile. The wavelet transform is adopted to decompose the original signal into many low-resolution signals that contain the learnable and unlearnable parts. The desired control profile is then compared with the learnable part of the transformed signal. Thus, the effects from unlearnable dynamics on the controlled system can be attenuated by a Fuzzy PD feedback controller. As for the rules of Fuzzy PD controller in the feedback loop, a genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to search for the inference rules of optimization. A proportional-valve controlled pneumatic cylinder actuator system is used as the control target for simulation. This paper deals with the vibration analysis of an asymmetric composite beam composed of glass a piezoelectric material. The Bernoulli's beam theory is adopted for mechanical deformations, and the electric potential field of the piezoelectric material is assumed such that the divergence-free requirement of the electrical displacements is satisfied. We demonstrate a quantitative broadband fiber sensor, based on evanescent field sensing in the cladding holes of an air-suspended solid-core photonic crystal fiber. We discuss the fabrication process, together with the structural- and optical characterization of a range of different fibers. Measured mode profiles are in good agreement with finite element method calculations made without free parameters. The fraction of the light in the hollow cladding can be tuned via the core diameter of the fiber. Dispersion measurements are in excellent agreement with theory and demonstrate tuning of the zero dispersion wavelength via the core diameter. Optimum design parameters for absorption sensors are discussed using a general parameter diagram. From our analysis, we estimate that a sensitivity increase of three orders of magnitude is feasible compared to standard cuvette measurements. Our study applies to both liquid and gas fiber sensors. We demonstrate the applicability of our results to liquid chemical sensing by measuring the broad absorption peak of an aqueous nickel chloride solution. We find striking agreement with the reference spectrum measured in a standard cuvette, even though the sample volume has decreased by three orders of magnitude. Our results demonstrate that air-suspended solid-core PCFs can be used in quantitative broadband chemical sensing measurements.

In a first of a series of studies of the H-alpha + [NII] emission from nearby spiral galaxies, we present measurements of H-alpha + [NII] emission from HII regions in M81. Our method uses large-field-CCD images and long-slit spectra, and is part of the ongoing Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut Sky Survey. The CCD images are taken with the NAOC 0.6/0.9m f/3 Schmidt telescope at the Xinglong Observing Station, using a multicolor filter set. Spectra of 10 of the brightest HII regions are obtained using the NAOC 2.16m telescope with a Tek 1024 X 1024 CCD. The continua of the spectra are calibrated by flux-calibrated images taken from the Schmidt observations. We determine the continuum component of our H-alpha + [NII] image via interpolation from the more accurately-measured backgrounds (M81 starlight) obtained from the two neighboring (in wavelength) BATC filter images. We use the calibrated fluxes of H-alpha + [NII] emission from the spectra to normalize this interpolated, continuum-subtracted H-alpha + [NII] image. We estimate the zero point uncertainty of the measured H-alpha + [NII] emission flux to be $\sim$ 8%. A catalogue of H-alpha + [NII] fluxes for 456 HII regions is provided, with those fluxes are on a more consistent linear scale than previously available. The logarithmically-binned H-alpha + [NII] luminosity function of HII regions is found to have slope $\alpha$ = -0.70, consistent with previous results (which allowed $\alpha=-0.5 \sim -0.8$). From the overall H-alpha + [NII] luminosity of the HII regions, the star formation rate of M81 is found to be $\sim 0.68 M_{\odot} {\rm yr}^{-1}$, modulo uncertainty with extinction corrections., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

In this paper, we present a multi-color photometric study of the nearby spiral galaxy M81, using images obtained with the Beijing Astronomical Observatory 60/90 cm Schmidt Telescope in 13 intermediate-band filters from 3800 to 10000{\AA}. The observations cover the whole area of M81 with a total integration of 51 hours from February 1995 to February 1997. This provides a multi-color map of M81 in pixels of $1\arcsec.7 \times 1\arcsec.7$. Using theoretical stellar population synthesis models, we demonstrate that some BATC colors and color indices can be used to disentangle the age and metallicity effect. We compare in detail the observed properties of M81 with the predictions from population synthesis models and quantify the relative chemical abundance, age and reddening distributions for different components of M81. We find that the metallicity of M81 is about $Z=0.03$ with no significant difference over the whole galaxy. In contrast, an age gradient is found between stellar populations of the central regions and of the bulge and disk regions of M81: the stellar population in its central regions is older than 8 Gyr while the disk stars are considerably younger, $\sim 2$ Gyr. We also give the reddening distribution in M81. We obtained very deep exposures of NGC 5907 with a Schmidt telescope, large-format CCD, and intermediate-band filters centered at 6660A and 8020A. These two filters, part of a 15-filter set, are custom-designed to avoid the brightest (and most variable) night sky lines, with the result that our images go deeper, with lower sky noise, than those taken with broad-band filters. Our errors of observation reach 1 mag/arcsec^2 at 29.00 mag/arcsec-2 in the 6660A image (= 28.7 in R-band), and 27.4 mag/arcsec^ in the 8020A image (same zero point as I-band). Fainter than R = 27 mag arcsec^, the surface brightness around NGC 5907 is strongly asymmetric, being mostly brighter the NW side of the galaxy midplane. This asymmetry rules out a halo for the origin of the faint surface brightness we see. Rather, this asymmetry is likely an artifact due to a combination of light from a faint ring around this galaxy (as described in Shang et al. 1998, ApJL 504, 23) and residual surface brightness at faint levels from stars that our star-masking procedure cannot completely eliminate. Good agreement with the surface photometry of NGC 5907 by Morrison et al. and other workers lead us to conclude that their data are similarly affected at faint levels by ring light and residual effects from their star masking procedures. Inspection of the images published by Morrison et al. and Sackett et al. confirm this to be the case. We report on a global CCD time-series photometric campaign to decode the pulsations of the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC1501. The star is hot and hydrogen-deficient, similar to the pre-white-dwarf PG 1159 stars. NGC1501 shows pulsational brightness variations of a few percent with periods ranging from 19 to 87 minutes. The variations are very complex, suggesting a pulsation spectrum that requires a long unbroken time series to resolve. Our CCD photometry of the star covers a two-week period in 1991 November, and used a global network of observatories. We obtained nearly continuous coverage over an interval of one week in the middle of the run. We have identified 10 pulsation periods, ranging from 5235 s down to 1154 s. We find strong evidence that the modes are indeed nonradial g-modes. The ratios of the frequencies of the largest-amplitude modes agree with those expected for modes that are trapped by a density discontinuity in the outer layers. We offer a model for the pulsation spectrum that includes a common period spacing of 22.3 s and a rotation period of 1.17 days; the period spacing allows us to assign a seismological mass of 0.55+/-0.03 Msun., Comment: 12 pages, AASTEX, 7 tables, 6 EPS figures, to appear in AJ, 12/96 Corrected version repairs table formatting and adds missing Table 7
