Crystal symmetry plays an important role in the Hall effects. Unconventional spin Hall effect (USHE), characterized by Dresselhaus and out-of-plane spins, has been observed in materials with low crystal symmetry. Recently, antisymmetric planar Hall effect (APHE) was discovered in rutile RuO$_2$ and IrO$_2$ (101) thin films, which also exhibit low crystal symmetry. However, the correlation between USHE and APHE remains largely unexplored. In this study, we report the observation of both USHE and APHE in IrO$_2$ (111) films, using spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) and harmonic Hall measurements, respectively. Notably, the unconventional spin torque efficiency from Dresselhaus spin was more than double that of a previous report. Additionally, the temperature dependence of APHE suggests that it arises from the Lorentz force, constrained by crystal symmetry. Symmetry analysis confirms the coexistence of USHE and APHE in IrO$_2$ (111), paving the way for a deeper understanding of Hall effects and related physical phenomena.

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) can be used to efficiently manipulate the magnetic state of magnetic materials, which is an essential element for memory and logic applications. Due to symmetry constraints, only in-plane spins can be injected into the ferromagnet from the underlying SOT layer for conventional SOT materials such as heavy metals and topological materials. Through the use of materials with low symmetries, or other symmetry breaking approaches, unconventional spin currents with out-of-plane polarization has been demonstrated and enabled field-free deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetization. Despite this progress, the SOT efficiency of these materials has typically remained low. Here, we report a giant SOT efficiency of 0.85 in sputtered Ni4W/CoFeB heterostructure at room temperature, as evaluated by second harmonic Hall measurements. In addition, due to the low crystal symmetry of Ni4W, unconventional out-of-plane and Dresselhaus-like spin components were observed. Macro-spin simulation suggests our spin Hall tensor to provide about an order of magnitude improvement in the magnetization switching efficiency, thus broadening the path towards energy efficient spintronic devices using low-symmetry materials.

Multimodal foundation models, such as Gemini and ChatGPT, have revolutionized human-machine interactions by seamlessly integrating various forms of data. Developing a universal spoken language model that comprehends a wide range of natural language instructions is critical for bridging communication gaps and facilitating more intuitive interactions. However, the absence of a comprehensive evaluation benchmark poses a significant challenge. We present Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2, an open and evolving benchmark for the comprehensive evaluation of instruction-based universal speech models. Building upon the first generation, this second version incorporates 125 new tasks contributed collaboratively by the global research community, expanding the benchmark to a total of 180 tasks, making it the largest benchmark for speech and audio evaluation. While the first generation of Dynamic-SUPERB was limited to classification tasks, Dynamic-SUPERB Phase-2 broadens its evaluation capabilities by introducing a wide array of novel and diverse tasks, including regression and sequence generation, across speech, music, and environmental audio. Evaluation results indicate that none of the models performed well universally. SALMONN-13B excelled in English ASR, while WavLLM demonstrated high accuracy in emotion recognition, but current models still require further innovations to handle a broader range of tasks. We will soon open-source all task data and the evaluation pipeline.

We systematically investigate local phonon hopping in the radial direction of a linear trapped-ion string. We measure the decay of hopping as a function of key trap parameters and analyze the results in terms of the decay time and the number of oscillations. We attribute the loss of coherence to nonlinear coupling between different modes. Despite quantitative differences, the overall trends in our numerical simulations are similar to those of the experimental results. This work establishes a method for evaluating phonon hopping coherence and provides insight into the underlying decoherence mechanisms.

Many nations are promoting the green transition in the energy sector to attain neutral carbon emissions by 2050. Smart Grid 2.0 (SG2) is expected to explore data-driven analytics and enhance communication technologies to improve the efficiency and sustainability of distributed renewable energy systems. These features are beyond smart metering and electric surplus distribution in conventional smart grids. Given the high dependence on communication networks to connect distributed microgrids in SG2, potential cascading failures of connectivity can cause disruption to data synchronization to the remote control systems. This paper reviews security threats and defense tactics for three stakeholders: power grid operators, communication network providers, and consumers. Through the survey, we found that SG2's stakeholders are particularly vulnerable to substation attacks/vandalism, malware/ransomware threats, blockchain vulnerabilities and supply chain breakdowns. Furthermore, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into autonomous energy management in distributed energy resources of SG2 creates new challenges. Accordingly, adversarial samples and false data injection on electricity reading and measurement sensors at power plants can fool AI-powered control functions and cause messy error-checking operations in energy storage, wrong energy estimation in electric vehicle charging, and even fraudulent transactions in peer-to-peer energy trading models. Scalable blockchain-based models, physical unclonable function, interoperable security protocols, and trustworthy AI models designed for managing distributed microgrids in SG2 are typical promising protection models for future research., Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables, accepted to appear in IEEE COMST

Social contact surveys are an important tool to assess infection risks within populations, and the effect of non-pharmaceutical interventions on social behaviour during disease outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. Numerous longitudinal social contact surveys were conducted during the COVID-19 era, however data analysis is plagued by reporting fatigue, a phenomenon whereby the average number of social contacts reported declines with the number of repeat participations and as participants' engagement decreases over time. Using data from the German COVIMOD Study between April 2020 to December 2021, we demonstrate that reporting fatigue varied considerably by sociodemographic factors and was consistently strongest among parents reporting children contacts (parental proxy reporting), students, middle-aged individuals, those in full-time employment and those self-employed. We find further that, when using data from first-time participants as gold standard, statistical models incorporating a simple logistic function to control for reporting fatigue were associated with substantially improved estimation accuracy relative to models with no reporting fatigue adjustments, and that no cap on the number of repeat participations was required. These results indicate that existing longitudinal contact survey data can be meaningfully interpreted under an easy-to-implement statistical approach adressing reporting fatigue confounding, and that longitudinal designs including repeat participants are a viable option for future social contact survey designs.

Red quasars, often associated with potent [OIII] outflows on both galactic and circumgalactic scales, may play a pivotal role in galactic evolution and black hole feedback. In this work, we explore the [FeII] emission in one such quasar at redshift z = 0.4352, F2M J110648.32+480712.3, using the integral field unit (IFU) mode of the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Our observations reveal clumpy [FeII] gas located to the south of the quasar. By comparing the kinematics of [FeII] and [OIII], we find that the clumpy [FeII] gas in the southeast and southwest aligns with the outflow, exhibiting similar median velocities up to v_50 ~ 1200 km/s and high velocity widths W_80 > 1000 km/s. In contrast, the [FeII] gas to the south shows kinematics inconsistent with the outflow, with W_80 ~ 500 km/s, significantly smaller than the [OIII] at the same location, suggesting that the [FeII] may be confined within the host galaxy. Utilizing standard emission-line diagnostic ratios, we map the ionization sources of the gas. According to the MAPPINGS III shock models for [FeII]/Pabeta, the regions to the southwest and southeast of the quasar are primarily photoionized. Conversely, the [FeII] emission to the south is likely excited by shocks generated by the back-pressure of the outflow on the galaxy disk, a direct signature of the impact of the quasar on its host.

Model checking is an automatic formal verification technique that is widely used in hardware verification. The state-of-the-art complete model-checking techniques, based on IC3/PDR and its general variant CAR, are based on computing symbolically sets of under - and over-approximating state sets (called frames) with multiple calls to a SAT solver. The performance of those techniques is sensitive to the order of the assumptions with which the SAT solver is invoked, because it affects the unsatisfiable cores - which the solver emits when the formula is unsatisfiable - that crucially affect the search process. This observation was previously published in [15], where two partial assumption ordering strategies, intersection and rotation were suggested (partial in the sense that they determine the order of only a subset of the literals). In this paper we extend and improve these strategies based on an analysis of the reason for their effectiveness. We prove that intersection is effective because of what we call locality of the cores, and our improved strategy is based on this observation. We conclude our paper with an extensive empirical evaluation of the various ordering techniques. One of our strategies, Hybrid-CAR, which switches between strategies at runtime, not only outperforms other, fixed ordering strategies, but also outperforms other state-of-the-art bug-finding algorithms such as ABC-BMC.

We establish an exact mapping between identical particles in one dimension with arbitrary exchange statistics, including bosons, anyons and fermions, provided they share the same scattering length. This boson-anyon-fermion mapping facilitates the construction of anyons from a linear superposition of spatially symmetric and anti-symmetric states. We demonstrate this in a spin-1/2 Fermi gas with coexistent s- and p-wave interactions, where both types of bound states can be supported by manipulating spin channels. A suitable symmetry-breaking field then hybridizes these states to form anyonic molecules. The condensation of these molecules in a many-body system leads to anyonic superfluidity, characterized by fractional statistics upon spin exchange within a Cooper pair. These anyonic states can be detected through asymmetric momentum distributions with a chiral $k^{-3}$ tail for each spin at high momentum. The spontaneous conversion of muonium to antimuonium is one of the interesting charged lepton flavor violation phenomena, offering a sensitive probe of potential new physics and serving as a tool to constrain the parameter space beyond the Standard Model. Utilizing a high-intensity muon beam, a Michel electron magnetic spectrometer and a positron transport solenoid together with a positron detection system, MACE aims to discover or constrain this rare process at the conversion probability beyond the level of $10^{-13}$. We present a new method for the verification of quantum circuits based on a novel symbolic representation of sets of quantum states using level-synchronized tree automata (LSTAs). LSTAs extend classical tree automata by labeling each transition with a set of choices, which are then used to synchronize subtrees of an accepted tree. Compared to the traditional tree automata, LSTAs have an incomparable expressive power while maintaining important properties, such as closure under union and intersection, and decidable language emptiness and inclusion. We have developed an efficient and fully automated symbolic verification algorithm for quantum circuits based on LSTAs. The complexity of supported gate operations is at most quadratic, dramatically improving the exponential worst-case complexity of an earlier tree automata-based approach. Furthermore, we show that LSTAs are a promising model for parameterized verification, i.e., verifying the correctness of families of circuits with the same structure for any number of qubits involved, which principally lies beyond the capabilities of previous automated approaches. We implemented this method as a C++ tool and compared it with three symbolic quantum circuit verifiers and two simulators on several benchmark examples. The results show that our approach can solve problems with sizes orders of magnitude larger than the state of the art.

We study the following distance realization problem. Given a quasi-metric $D$ on a set $T$ of terminals, does there exist a directed Okamura-Seymour graph that realizes $D$ as the (directed) shortest-path distance metric on $T$? We show that, if we are further given the circular ordering of terminals lying on the boundary, then Monge property is a sufficient and necessary condition. This generalizes previous results for undirected Okamura-Seymour instances. With the circular ordering, we give a greedy algorithm for constructing a directed Okamura-Seymour instance that realizes the input quasi-metric. The algorithm takes the dual perspective concerning flows and routings, and is based on a new way of analyzing graph structures, by viewing graphs as \emph{paths and their intersections}. We believe this new understanding is of independent interest and will prove useful in other problems in graph theory and graph algorithms. We also design an efficient algorithm for finding such a circular ordering that makes $D$ satisfy Monge property, if one exists. Combined with our result above, this gives an efficient algorithm for the distance realization problem.

We investigate the production of axion-like particles (ALPs) in stellar cores, where they interact with electromagnetic fields and electrons, with typical masses between $\mathcal O(0.1)$ and $\mathcal O(10)$ keV. These low-energy ALPs are gravitationally trapped in the orbits of stars and subsequently decay into two photons that we detect as monochromatic X-ray lines. We propose to search for these gravitationally trapped ALPs in the Alpha Centauri binary system, our closest stellar neighbor, using sensitive X-ray detectors like Chandra and eROSITA. Our search for ALP decay signals in the energy range of 0.2 keV to 10 keV yielded null results, thus establishing the most stringent limits on ALP interactions to date. Specifically, if ALPs are mainly produced by Compton or bremsstrahlung processes (ALP-electron coupling $g_{aee}$ being significant), we have improved the limits on the ALP-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ by two to three orders of magnitude, in ALP mass range between 0.2 keV to 5 keV, compared to previous measurements, including those from GW170817, SN 2023ixf, and other sources., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Cellular membrane dynamics play an important role in a variety of physiological processes. However, due to the stringent light-coupling conditions required for exciting evanescent waves, label-free mapping of cellular membrane dynamics on curved substrates remains challenging. Here, we report surface-emitting resonator interference microscopy (SERIM), which employs the evanescent wave naturally present in the near-field region of a whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator to probe the subcellular membrane dynamics. The WGM resonator provides strong optical feedback for enhancing the light-mattering interaction and also provides a biomimetic curvature interface to investigate the membrane dynamics. The interaction of the evanescent wave with the cell membrane caused significant scattering, forming a highly sensitive interference pattern. We found that the time-resolved interference patterns can be utilized to extract subcellular membrane dynamics with a diffractive limited spatial resolution. We further employed the SERIM to investigate the spatial heterogeneity of membrane dynamics during migration, and also stimulus responses to temperature and drugs. In striking contrast to the conventional label-free methods, the easy excitation of the evanescent wave makes SERIM a versatile label-free strategy for studying cellular behavior on a curved surface. Our work holds promise for sensitive detection of subtle biochemical and biophysical information during cell-substrate interaction.

Quasar feedback may play a key role in the evolution of massive galaxies. The dust-reddened quasar, F2M110648.35$+$480712 at $z = 0.4352$ is one of the few cases at its redshift that exhibits powerful quasar feedback through bipolar outflows. Our new observation with the integral field unit mode of Near-infrared Spectrograph onboard JWST opens a new window to examine this spectacular outflow through Pa$\alpha$ emission line with $\sim$3$\times$ better spatial resolution than previous work. The morphology and kinematics of the Pa$\alpha$ nebula confirm the existence of a bipolar outflow extending on a scale of $\sim$17$\times$14 kpc and with a velocity reaching $\sim$1100 km s$^{-1}$. The higher spatial resolution of our new observation leads to more reliable measurements of outflow kinematics. Considering only the spatially resolved outflow and assuming an electron density of 100 cm$^{-2}$, the mass, momentum and kinetic energy outflow rates are $\sim$50-210 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, $\sim$0.3-1.7$\times$10$^{36}$ dynes ($\sim$14-78\% of the quasar photon momentum flux) and $\sim$0.16-1.27$\times$10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($\sim$0.02-0.20\% of the quasar bolometric luminosity), respectively. The local instantaneous outflow rates generally decrease radially. We infer that the quasar is powerful enough to drive the outflow, while stellar processes cannot be overlooked as a contributing energy source. The mass outflow rate is $\sim$0.4-1.5 times the star formation rate, and the ratio of kinetic energy outflow rate to the quasar bolometric luminosity is comparable to the minimum value required for negative quasar feedback in simulations. Efficient and systematic numerical methods for robust control design are crucial in quantum systems due to inevitable uncertainties or disturbances. We propose a novel approach that models uncertainties as random variables and quantifies robustness using the expectation of infidelity. By reformulating the robustness measure as a weighted tensor product quadrature, we employ the Smolyak sparse grid algorithm to develop a parametric robust quantum control scheme. This scheme significantly reduces computational cost while improving accuracy. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our Smolyak algorithm assisted gradient-based methods including smGOAT and smGRAPE in robust control problems regarding state transfer and quantum gate realization, with ultrahigh fidelity and strong robustness achieved. Our results contribute to improving the reliability and security of quantum computing and communication systems in the presence of real-world imperfections.

The coexistence of high-temperature intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering, large magnetic anisotropy, along with novel mechanical properties such as ferroelasticity and flexibility, in experimental feasible two-dimensional (2D) crystals is greatly appealing for nanoscale spintronics. However, the progress in identifying such materials is limited. Here, by first-principles calculations, we report the findings of an extraordinary combination of the above qualities for the first time in a new 2D exfoliated FeSi nanosheet in the P4/nmm space group. Due to the strong anion-mediated superexchange interaction, the monolayer FeSi (ML-FeSi) exhibits a Curie temperature Tc as high as 830 K, surpassing the current experimental record (344 K for ML-Cr3Te4). Furthermore, including FeSi, such isostructural lattices all demonstrate exceptional softness, as evidenced by their ultra-low in-plane stiffness. Remarkably, the transition metal atom and square-shaped crystal form work together to give this family of ML materials unique properties that can transition from Ising-like 2D ferromagnets in FeSi, MnP, MnAs, CrP, FeI, and VAs to 2D-XY ones in CrAs, VP, and multiferroic MnGe and TiTe. We consider realizable contextual bandits with general function approximation, investigating how small reward variance can lead to better-than-minimax regret bounds. Unlike in minimax bounds, we show that the eluder dimension $d_\text{elu}$$-$a complexity measure of the function class$-$plays a crucial role in variance-dependent bounds. We consider two types of adversary: (1) Weak adversary: The adversary sets the reward variance before observing the learner's action. In this setting, we prove that a regret of $\Omega(\sqrt{\min\{A,d_\text{elu}\}\Lambda}+d_\text{elu})$ is unavoidable when $d_{\text{elu}}\leq\sqrt{AT}$, where $A$ is the number of actions, $T$ is the total number of rounds, and $\Lambda$ is the total variance over $T$ rounds. For the $A\leq d_\text{elu}$ regime, we derive a nearly matching upper bound $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{A\Lambda}+d_\text{elu})$ for the special case where the variance is revealed at the beginning of each round. (2) Strong adversary: The adversary sets the reward variance after observing the learner's action. We show that a regret of $\Omega(\sqrt{d_\text{elu}\Lambda}+d_\text{elu})$ is unavoidable when $\sqrt{d_\text{elu}\Lambda}+d_\text{elu}\leq\sqrt{AT}$. In this setting, we provide an upper bound of order $\tilde{O}(d_\text{elu}\sqrt{\Lambda}+d_\text{elu})$. Furthermore, we examine the setting where the function class additionally provides distributional information of the reward, as studied by Wang et al. (2024). We demonstrate that the regret bound $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{d_\text{elu}\Lambda}+d_\text{elu})$ established in their work is unimprovable when $\sqrt{d_{\text{elu}}\Lambda}+d_\text{elu}\leq\sqrt{AT}$. Recent advances in knowledge distillation (KD) have enabled smaller student models to approach the performance of larger teacher models. However, popular methods such as supervised KD and on-policy KD, are adversely impacted by the knowledge gaps between teacher-student in practical scenarios. Supervised KD suffers from a distribution mismatch between training with a static dataset and inference over final student-generated outputs. Conversely, on-policy KD, which uses student-generated samples for training, can suffer from low-quality training examples with which teacher models are not familiar, resulting in inaccurate teacher feedback. To address these limitations, we introduce Speculative Knowledge Distillation (SKD), a novel approach that leverages cooperation between student and teacher models to generate high-quality training data on-the-fly while aligning with the student's inference-time distribution. In SKD, the student proposes tokens, and the teacher replaces poorly ranked ones based on its own distribution, transferring high-quality knowledge adaptively. We evaluate SKD on various text generation tasks, including translation, summarization, math, and instruction following, and show that SKD consistently outperforms existing KD methods across different domains, data sizes, and model initialization strategies.

In this paper, we present a computational algorithm for constructing all boundaries and defects of topological generalized Pauli stabilizer codes in two spatial dimensions. Utilizing the operator algebra formalism, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the topological data-such as anyon types, fusion rules, topological spins, and braiding statistics-of (2+1)D bulk stabilizer codes and (1+1)D boundary anomalous subsystem codes. To make the operator algebra computationally accessible, we adapt Laurent polynomials and convert the tasks into matrix operations, e.g., the Hermite normal form for obtaining boundary anyons and the Smith normal form for determining fusion rules. This approach enables computers to automatically generate all possible gapped boundaries and defects for topological Pauli stabilizer codes through boundary anyon condensation and topological order completion. This streamlines the analysis of surface codes and associated logical operations for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Our algorithm applies to $Z_d$ qudits, including both prime and nonprime $d$, thus enabling the exploration of topological quantum codes beyond toric codes. We have applied the algorithm and explicitly demonstrated the lattice constructions of 2 boundaries and 6 defects in the $Z_2$ toric code, 3 boundaries and 22 defects in the $Z_4$ toric code, 1 boundary and 2 defects in the double semion code, 1 boundary and 22 defects in the six-semion code, 6 boundaries and 270 defects in the color code, and 6 defects in the anomalous three-fermion code. In addition, we investigate the boundaries of two specific bivariate bicycle codes within a family of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We demonstrate that their topological orders are equivalent to 8 and 10 copies of $Z_2$ toric codes, with anyons restricted to move by 12 and 1023 lattice sites in the square lattice, respectively., Comment: 36+16 pages, 41 figures

We propose Model Swarms, a collaborative search algorithm to adapt LLMs via swarm intelligence, the collective behavior guiding individual systems. Specifically, Model Swarms starts with a pool of LLM experts and a utility function. Guided by the best-found checkpoints across models, diverse LLM experts collaboratively move in the weight space and optimize a utility function representing model adaptation objectives. Compared to existing model composition approaches, Model Swarms offers tuning-free model adaptation, works in low-data regimes with as few as 200 examples, and does not require assumptions about specific experts in the swarm or how they should be composed. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Model Swarms could flexibly adapt LLM experts to a single task, multi-task domains, reward models, as well as diverse human interests, improving over 12 model composition baselines by up to 21.0% across tasks and contexts. Further analysis reveals that LLM experts discover previously unseen capabilities in initial checkpoints and that Model Swarms enable the weak-to-strong transition of experts through the collaborative search process.

Quantum-centric supercomputing presents a compelling framework for large-scale hybrid quantum-classical tasks. Although quantum machine learning (QML) offers theoretical benefits in various applications, challenges such as large-size data encoding in the input stage and the reliance on quantum resources in the inference stage limit its practicality for tasks like fine-tuning large language models (LLMs). Quantum parameter generation, a novel approach of QML, addresses these limitations by using quantum neural networks (QNNs) to generate classical model weights (parameters) exclusively during training, thereby decoupling inference from quantum hardware. In this work, we introduce Quantum Parameter Adaptation (QPA) in the framework of quantum parameter generation, which integrates QNNs with a classical multi-layer perceptron mapping model to generate parameters for fine-tuning methods. Using Gemma-2 and GPT-2 as case studies, QPA demonstrates significant parameter reduction for parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods, such as Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), while maintaining comparable or improved performance in text generation tasks. Specifically, QPA reduces the number of parameters to $52.06\%$ of the original LoRA for GPT-2 with a slight performance gain of $0.75\%$, and to $16.84\%$ for Gemma-2, with a marginal performance improvement of $0.07\%$. These results highlight QPA's ability to achieve efficient parameter reduction without sacrificing performance in the quantum parameter generation framework. This work showcases the potential of quantum-enhanced parameter reduction, offering a scalable quantum-classical solution for fine-tuning LLMs while preserving the feasibility of inference on classical hardware., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

The rise of deepfake technologies has posed significant challenges to privacy, security, and information integrity, particularly in audio and multimedia content. This paper introduces a Quantum-Trained Convolutional Neural Network (QT-CNN) framework designed to enhance the detection of deepfake audio, leveraging the computational power of quantum machine learning (QML). The QT-CNN employs a hybrid quantum-classical approach, integrating Quantum Neural Networks (QNNs) with classical neural architectures to optimize training efficiency while reducing the number of trainable parameters. Our method incorporates a novel quantum-to-classical parameter mapping that effectively utilizes quantum states to enhance the expressive power of the model, achieving up to 70% parameter reduction compared to classical models without compromising accuracy. Data pre-processing involved extracting essential audio features, label encoding, feature scaling, and constructing sequential datasets for robust model evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate that the QT-CNN achieves comparable performance to traditional CNNs, maintaining high accuracy during training and testing phases across varying configurations of QNN blocks. The QT framework's ability to reduce computational overhead while maintaining performance underscores its potential for real-world applications in deepfake detection and other resource-constrained scenarios. This work highlights the practical benefits of integrating quantum computing into artificial intelligence, offering a scalable and efficient approach to advancing deepfake detection technologies.

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

In linear bandits, how can a learner effectively learn when facing corrupted rewards? While significant work has explored this question, a holistic understanding across different adversarial models and corruption measures is lacking, as is a full characterization of the minimax regret bounds. In this work, we compare two types of corruptions commonly considered: strong corruption, where the corruption level depends on the action chosen by the learner, and weak corruption, where the corruption level does not depend on the action chosen by the learner. We provide a unified framework to analyze these corruptions. For stochastic linear bandits, we fully characterize the gap between the minimax regret under strong and weak corruptions. We also initiate the study of corrupted adversarial linear bandits, obtaining upper and lower bounds with matching dependencies on the corruption level. Next, we reveal a connection between corruption-robust learning and learning with gap-dependent mis-specification, a setting first studied by Liu et al. (2023a), where the misspecification level of an action or policy is proportional to its suboptimality. We present a general reduction that enables any corruption-robust algorithm to handle gap-dependent misspecification. This allows us to recover the results of Liu et al. (2023a) in a black-box manner and significantly generalize them to settings like linear MDPs, yielding the first results for gap-dependent misspecification in reinforcement learning. However, this general reduction does not attain the optimal rate for gap-dependent misspecification. Motivated by this, we develop a specialized algorithm that achieves optimal bounds for gap-dependent misspecification in linear bandits, thus answering an open question posed by Liu et al. We explore the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraint on heavy neutrino that is a mixture of gauge singlet fermion and active neutrinos in the Standard Model. We work in the minimal model with only two parameters, the heavy neutrino mass $m_4$ and the mixing parameter $|U_{a4}|^2$, where $a=e$, $\mu$, or $\tau$ stands for the active neutrino flavor. We show that both the early universe production mechanism and decay products of the heavy neutrino are determined by $m_4$ and $|U_{a4}|^2$, with little room for further assumptions. This predictivity allows us to present a portrait of the entire BBN excluded parameter space. Our analysis includes various effects including temporary matter domination, energy injections in the form of pions, photons and light neutrinos. In the post-fifth generation (5G) era, escalating user quality of service (QoS) strains terrestrial network capacity, especially in urban areas with dynamic traffic distributions. This paper introduces a novel cooperative unmanned aerial vehicle relay-based deployment (CUD) framework in satellite air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN). The CUD strategy deploys an unmanned aerial vehicle-based relay (UAVr) in an amplify-andforward (AF) mode to enhance user QoS when terrestrial base stations fall short of network capacity. By combining low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and UAVr signals using cooperative diversity, the CUD framework enhances the signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the user. Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) impact dementia care substantially, affecting both patients and caregivers. Effective management and early detection of BPSD are crucial to reduce the stress and burden on caregivers and healthcare systems. Despite the advancements in machine learning for dementia prediction, there is a considerable gap in utilizing these methods for BPSD prediction. This study aims to fill this gap by presenting a novel personalized framework for BPSD prediction, utilizing physiological signals from smart wearable devices. Our personalized fine-grained BPSD prediction method accurately predicts BPSD occurrences by extracting individual behavioral patterns, while the generalized models identify diverse patterns and differentiate between various BPSD symptoms. Detailed comparisons between the proposed personalized method and conventional generalized methods reveals substantial improvements across all performance metrics, including a 16.0% increase in AUC. These results demonstrate the potential of our proposed method in advancing dementia care by enabling proactive interventions and improving patient outcomes in real-world scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that leverages physiological signals from smart wearable devices to predict BPSD, marking a significant stride in dementia care research.

Machine-learned surrogate models to accelerate lengthy computer simulations are becoming increasingly important as engineers look to streamline the product design cycle. In many cases, these approaches offer the ability to predict relevant quantities throughout a geometry, but place constraints on the form of the input data. In a world of diverse data types, a preferred approach would not restrict the input to a particular structure. In this paper, we propose Topology-Agnostic Graph U-Net (TAG U-Net), a graph convolutional network that can be trained to input any mesh or graph structure and output a prediction of a target scalar field at each node. The model constructs coarsened versions of each input graph and performs a set of convolution and pooling operations to predict the node-wise outputs on the original graph. By training on a diverse set of shapes, the model can make strong predictions, even for shapes unlike those seen during training. A 3-D additive manufacturing dataset is presented, containing Laser Powder Bed Fusion simulation results for thousands of parts. The model is demonstrated on this dataset, and it performs well, predicting both 2-D and 3-D scalar fields with a median R-squared > 0.85 on test geometries. We have developed a high-performance Chinese Chess AI that operates without reliance on search algorithms. This AI has demonstrated the capability to compete at a level commensurate with the top 0.1\% of human players. By eliminating the search process typically associated with such systems, this AI achieves a Queries Per Second (QPS) rate that exceeds those of systems based on the Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm by over a thousandfold and surpasses those based on the AlphaBeta pruning algorithm by more than a hundredfold. The AI training system consists of two parts: supervised learning and reinforcement learning. Supervised learning provides an initial human-like Chinese chess AI, while reinforcement learning, based on supervised learning, elevates the strength of the entire AI to a new level. Based on this training system, we carried out enough ablation experiments and discovered that 1. The same parameter amount of Transformer architecture has a higher performance than CNN on Chinese chess; 2. Possible moves of both sides as features can greatly improve the training process; 3. Selective opponent pool, compared to pure self-play training, results in a faster improvement curve and a higher strength limit. 4. Recent advancements in language models (LMs) have notably enhanced their ability to reason with tabular data, primarily through program-aided mechanisms that manipulate and analyze tables. However, these methods often require the entire table as input, leading to scalability challenges due to the positional bias or context length constraints. In response to these challenges, we introduce TableRAG, a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework specifically designed for LM-based table understanding. TableRAG leverages query expansion combined with schema and cell retrieval to pinpoint crucial information before providing it to the LMs. This enables more efficient data encoding and precise retrieval, significantly reducing prompt lengths and mitigating information loss. We have developed two new million-token benchmarks from the Arcade and BIRD-SQL datasets to thoroughly evaluate TableRAG's effectiveness at scale. Electric guitar tone modeling typically focuses on the non-linear transformation from clean to amplifier-rendered audio. Traditional methods rely on one-to-one mappings, incorporating device parameters into neural models to replicate specific amplifiers. However, these methods are limited by the need for specific training data. In this paper, we adapt a model based on the previous work, which leverages a tone embedding encoder and a feature wise linear modulation (FiLM) condition method. In this work, we altered conditioning method using a hypernetwork-based gated convolutional network (GCN) to generate audio that blends clean input with the tone characteristics of reference audio. By extending the training data to cover a wider variety of amplifier tones, our model is able to capture a broader range of tones. Additionally, we developed a real-time plugin to demonstrate the system's practical application, allowing users to experience its performance interactively. Spins in strongly frustrated systems are of intense interest due to the emergence of intriguing quantum states including superconductivity and quantum spin liquid. Herein we report the discovery of cascade of phase transitions and large magnetic anisotropy in the averievite CsClCu5P2O10 single crystals. Under zero field, CsClCu5P2O10 undergoes a first-order structural transition at around 225 K from high temperature centrosymmetric P-3m1 to low temperature noncentrosymmetric P321, followed by an AFM transition at 13.6 K, another structural transition centering at ~3 K, and another AFM transition at ~2.18 K. Based upon magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data with magnetic fields perpendicular to the ab plane, a phase diagram, consisting of a paramagnetic state, two AFM states and four field-induced states including two magnetization plateaus, has been constructed. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm, uniINF, for the Heavy-Tailed Multi-Armed Bandits (HTMAB) problem, demonstrating robustness and adaptability in both stochastic and adversarial environments. Unlike the stochastic MAB setting where loss distributions are stationary with time, our study extends to the adversarial setup, where losses are generated from heavy-tailed distributions that depend on both arms and time. Our novel algorithm `uniINF` enjoys the so-called Best-of-Both-Worlds (BoBW) property, performing optimally in both stochastic and adversarial environments without knowing the exact environment type. Moreover, our algorithm also possesses a Parameter-Free feature, i.e., it operates without the need of knowing the heavy-tail parameters $(\sigma, \alpha)$ a-priori. To be precise, uniINF ensures nearly-optimal regret in both stochastic and adversarial environments, matching the corresponding lower bounds when $(\sigma, \alpha)$ is known (up to logarithmic factors). To our knowledge, uniINF is the first parameter-free algorithm to achieve the BoBW property for the heavy-tailed MAB problem. Technically, we develop innovative techniques to achieve BoBW guarantees for Parameter-Free HTMABs, including a refined analysis for the dynamics of log-barrier, an auto-balancing learning rate scheduling scheme, an adaptive skipping-clipping loss tuning technique, and a stopping-time analysis for logarithmic regret.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable breakthroughs. However, the huge number of parameters in LLMs require significant amount of memory storage in inference, which prevents their practical deployment in many applications. To reduce memory storage of LLMs, singular value decomposition (SVD) provides a promising solution to approximate weight matrices for compressing LLMs. In this paper, we take a step further to explore parameter sharing across different layers with SVD to achieve more effective compression for LLMs. Specifically, weight matrices in different layers are decomposed and represented as a linear combination of a set of shared basis vectors and unique coefficients. The types of weight matrices and the layer selection for basis sharing are examined when compressing LLMs to maintain the performance. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that Basis Sharing outperforms state-of-the-art SVD-based compression approaches and parameter sharing techniques, especially under large compression ratios. Our team developed a riding ballbot (called PURE) that is dynamically stable, omnidirectional, and driven by lean-to-steer control. A hands-free admittance control scheme (HACS) was previously integrated to allow riders with different torso functions to control the robot's movements via torso leaning and twisting. Such an interface requires motor coordination skills and could result in collisions with obstacles due to low proficiency. Hence, a shared controller (SC) that limits the speed of PURE could be helpful to ensure the safety of riders. However, the self-balancing dynamics of PURE could result in a weak control authority of its motion, in which the torso motion of the rider could easily result in poor tracking of the command speed dictated by the shared controller. Thus, we proposed an interactive hands-free admittance control scheme (iHACS), which added two modules to HACS to improve the speed-tracking performance of PURE: control gain personalization module and interaction compensation module. Human riding tests of simple tasks, idle-keeping and speed-limiting, were conducted to compare the performance of HACS and iHACS. Two manual wheelchair users and two able-bodied individuals participated in this study. They were instructed to use "adversarial" torso motions that would tax the SC's ability to keep the ballbot idling or below a set speed. In the idle-keeping tasks, iHACS demonstrated minimal translational motion and low command speed tracking RMSE, even with significant torso lean angles. During the speed-limiting task with command speed saturated at 0.5 m/s, the system achieved an average maximum speed of 1.1 m/s with iHACS, compared with that of over 1.9 m/s with HACS. These results suggest that iHACS can enhance PURE's control authority over the rider, which enables PURE to provide physical interactions back to the rider and results in a collaborative rider-robot synergy.

This study introduces the development of hands-free control schemes for a riding ballbot, designed to allow riders including manual wheelchair users to control its movement through torso leaning and twisting. The hardware platform, Personal Unique Rolling Experience (PURE), utilizes a ballbot drivetrain, a dynamically stable mobile robot that uses a ball as its wheel to provide omnidirectional maneuverability. To accommodate users with varying torso motion functions, the hanads-free control scheme should be adjustable based on the rider's torso function and personal preferences. Therefore, concepts of (a) impedance control and (b) admittance control were integrated into the control scheme. A duo-agent optimization framework was utilized to assess the efficiency of this rider-ballbot system for a safety-critical task: braking from 1.4 m/s. The candidate control schemes were further implemented in the physical robot hardware and validated with two experienced users, demonstrating the efficiency and robustness of the hands-free admittance control scheme (HACS). This interface, which utilized physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) as the input, resulted in lower braking effort and shorter braking distance and time. Subsequently, 12 novice participants (six able-bodied users and six manual wheelchair users) with different levels of torso motion capability were then recruited to benchmark the braking performance with HACS. The indoor navigation capability of PURE was further demonstrated with these participants in courses simulating narrow hallways, tight turns, and navigation through static and dynamic obstacles. By exploiting pHRI, the proposed admittance-style control scheme provided effective control of the ballbot via torso motions. This interface enables PURE to provide a personal unique rolling experience to manual wheelchair users for safe and agile indoor navigation.

Van der Waals (Vdw) heterostructures constructed from TMDCs provide an ideal platform for exploring various quasiparticle behaviors, with trion-composed of neutral exciton and charged carrier-being a notable example. There are typically three methods to generate trion: electrical doping, chemical doping, and direct optical doping. The first two methods generate static trion, while the last gives rise to transient trion. Here, we present an indirect optical doping approach to generate transient trion via ultrafast charge transfer (CT) and achieve control over the trion-to-exciton ratio by adjusting CT in Gr/MoS2 heterostructure. Furthermore, we demonstrated that dynamics of the transient trion generated with this method, which shows slightly longer lifetime than that of exciton accounted for the Coulomb interactions between trion and charged defect. Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

Dual Active Galactic Nuclei (dual AGNs), a phase in some galaxy mergers during which both central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are active, are expected to be a key observable stage leading up to SMBH mergers. Constraining the population of dual AGNs in both the nearby and high-z universe has proven to be elusive until very recently. We present a multi-wavelength follow-up campaign to confirm the nature of a sample of 20 candidate dual AGNs at cosmic noon (z~2) from the VODKA sample. Through a combination of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Very Large Array (VLA) imaging, we refute the possibility of gravitational lensing in all but one target. We find evidence of dual AGNs in four systems, while seven exhibit single AGN in galaxy pairs, either through strong radio emission or ancillary emission line data. The remaining systems are either confirmed as quasar-star superpositions (six) or non-lensed pairs (two) that require further investigations to establish AGN activity. Among the systems with radio detections, we find a variety of radio spectral slopes and UV/optical colors suggesting that our sample contains a range of AGN properties, from obscured radio-quiet objects to those with powerful synchrotron-emitting jets. This study presents one of the largest dedicated multi-wavelength follow-up campaigns to date searching for dual AGNs at high redshift. The advent of large integral field spectroscopic surveys has found that elliptical galaxies (EGs) can be classified into two classes: the fast rotators (whose kinematics are dominated by rotation) and the slow rotators (which exhibit slow or no rotation pattern). It is often suggested that while the slow rotators typically have boxy isophotal shapes, have a high $\alpha$-to-iron abundance ratio, and are quite massive, the fast rotators often exhibit the opposite properties (that is, having disky isophotes, lower $\alpha$-to-iron ratio, and of typical masses). Whether the EGs consist of two distinct populations (i.e., a dichotomy exists), remains an unsolved issue. To examine the existence of the dichotomy, we used a sample of 1,895 EGs from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, and measured robustly the stellar kinematics, isophotal shapes, and [Mg/Fe] ratio. We confirmed the previous finding that the bulk of the EGs are disky (65%) and fast rotators (67%), but found no evidence supporting a dichotomy, based on a principal component analysis. The different classes (boxy/disky and slow/fast rotators) of EGs occupy slightly different loci in the principal component space. We present Gemini/GMOS and HST/STIS optical spectra for 27 dual quasar candidates selected based on their variability-induced astrometric noise or double detections in Gaia (the VODKA project). From this follow-up, we spectroscopically identify 10 star superpositions and 8 dual/lensed quasars. Among the remaining targets, 2 are likely dual/lensed quasars based on additional radio imaging, while the rest are quasars with unknown companions. Notably, WISE J1649+0812 is a newly confirmed dual quasar with a projected separation of 5 kpc at $z=1.39$ and a significant velocity offset of 183$\pm$76 km/s, highlighting the utility of narrow emission lines in identifying genuine dual quasars. Without prior photometric or spectroscopic selection, we find the star contamination rate to be 37-63%, while the dual/lensed quasar fraction is $\gtrsim$ 30% in the follow-up VODKA sample. However, when combined with existing unresolved spectra and spatially-resolved two-band color cuts, the dual/lensed quasar fraction can be increased to $\gtrsim$ 67%. High signal-to-noise ratio spectra ($\gtrsim$ 20 per spectral element) with adequate spectral resolution ($R \gtrsim$ 1000) are essential for identifying faint absorption lines in foreground stars and detecting dual quasars through velocity offsets., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, submitted to ApJ, comments are welcome

GRB 230812B, detected by the Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) constellation mission, is an exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a duration of only 3 seconds. Sitting near the traditional boundary ($\sim$ 2 s) between long and short GRBs, GRB 230812B is notably associated with a supernova (SN), indicating a massive star progenitor. This makes it a rare example of a short-duration GRB resulting from stellar collapse. Our analysis, using a time-evolving synchrotron model, suggests that the burst has an emission radius of approximately $10^{14.5}$~cm. We propose that the short duration of GRB 230812B is due to the combined effects of the central engine's activity time and the time required for the jet to break through the stellar envelope. Our findings provide another case that challenges the conventional view that short-duration GRBs originate exclusively from compact object mergers, demonstrating that a broader range of durations exists for GRBs arising from the collapse of massive stars., Comment: 10 pages, 3 tables, 11 figures

Sequential models like recurrent neural networks and transformers have become standard for probabilistic multivariate time series forecasting across various domains. Despite their strengths, they struggle with capturing high-dimensional distributions and cross-feature dependencies. Recent work explores generative approaches using diffusion or flow-based models, extending to time series imputation and forecasting. However, scalability remains a challenge. This work proposes a novel method combining recurrent neural networks' efficiency with diffusion models' probabilistic modeling, based on stochastic interpolants and conditional generation with control features, offering insights for future developments in this dynamic field.

We present the high-precision result for the zero-jettiness soft function at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) in perturbative QCD. At this perturbative order, the soft function is the last missing ingredient required for the computation of a hadronic colour singlet production or a colour singlet decay into two jets using the zero-jettiness variable as the slicing parameter. Furthermore, the knowledge of the N3LO soft function enables the re-summed description of the thrust distribution in the process $e^+ e^- \to \textrm{hadrons}$ through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, which is important for the extraction of the strong coupling constant using this shape variable. On the methodological side, the complexity of the zero-jettiness variable forced us to develop a new semi-analytic method for phase-space integration in the presence of constraints parameterized through Heaviside functions which, hopefully, will be useful for further development of the $N$-jettiness slicing scheme., Comment: 6 pages, attached results in computer readable form

We leverage best response dynamics to solve monotone variational inequalities on compact and convex sets. Specialization of the method to variational inequalities in game theory recovers convergence results to Nash equilibria when agents select the best response to the current distribution of strategies. We apply the method to generalize population games with additional convex constraints. Furthermore, we explore the robustness of the method by introducing various types of time-varying disturbances.

This paper introduces CompressedMediQ, a novel hybrid quantum-classical machine learning pipeline specifically developed to address the computational challenges associated with high-dimensional multi-class neuroimaging data analysis. Standard neuroimaging datasets, such as large-scale MRI data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and Neuroimaging in Frontotemporal Dementia (NIFD), present significant hurdles due to their vast size and complexity. CompressedMediQ integrates classical high-performance computing (HPC) nodes for advanced MRI pre-processing and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-PCA-based feature extraction and reduction, addressing the limited-qubit availability for quantum data encoding in the NISQ (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum) era. This is followed by Quantum Support Vector Machine (QSVM) classification. By utilizing quantum kernel methods, the pipeline optimizes feature mapping and classification, enhancing data separability and outperforming traditional neuroimaging analysis techniques. Experimental results highlight the pipeline's superior accuracy in dementia staging, validating the practical use of quantum machine learning in clinical diagnostics. Despite the limitations of NISQ devices, this proof-of-concept demonstrates the transformative potential of quantum-enhanced learning, paving the way for scalable and precise diagnostic tools in healthcare and signal processing.

Establishing a fully functional quantum internet relies on the efficient allocation of multipartite entangled states, which enables advanced quantum communication protocols, secure multipartite quantum key distribution, and distributed quantum computing. In this work, we propose local operations and classical communication (LOCC) protocols for allocating generalized $N$-qubit W states within a centralized hub architecture, where the central hub node preshares Bell states with each end node. We develop a detailed analysis of the optimality of the resources required for our proposed W-state allocation protocol and the previously proposed GHZ-state protocol. Our results show that these protocols deterministically and exactly distribute states using only $N$ qubits of quantum memory within the central system, with communication costs of $2N - 2$ and $N$ classical bits for the W and GHZ states, respectively. These resource-efficient LOCC protocols are further proven to be optimal within the centralized hub architecture, outperforming conventional teleportation protocols for entanglement distribution in both memory and communication costs. Our results provide a more resource-efficient method for allocating essential multipartite entangled states in quantum networks, paving the way for the realization of a quantum internet with enhanced efficiency.

We construct the first-order perturbative Taub-NUT black hole solutions in Einstein gravity extended with a cubic curvature invariant. The corrected thermodynamic quantities are then obtained by the standard method and the first law and Smarr relation are satisfied. We also study the perturbative correction to thermodynamics using the Reall-Santos (RS) method and verify that the method is still applicable even though the metrics are no longer asymptotic to Minkowski spacetime. This study introduces a shared-control approach for collision avoidance in a self-balancing riding ballbot, called PURE, marked by its dynamic stability, omnidirectional movement, and hands-free interface. Integrated with a sensor array and a novel Passive Artificial Potential Field (PAPF) method, PURE provides intuitive navigation with deceleration assistance and haptic/audio feedback, effectively mitigating collision risks. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional APF methods, such as control oscillations and unnecessary speed reduction in challenging scenarios. A human-robot interaction experiment, with 20 manual wheelchair users and able-bodied individuals, was conducted to evaluate the performance of indoor navigation and obstacle avoidance with the proposed shared-control algorithm. Results indicated that shared-control significantly reduced collisions and cognitive load without affecting travel speed, offering intuitive and safe operation.
