VO2 is renowned for its electric transition from an insulating monoclinic (M1) phase, characterized by V–V dimerized structures, to a metallic rutile (R) phase above 340 K. This transition is accompanied by a magnetic change: the M1 phase exhibits a non-magnetic spin-singlet state, while the R phase exhibits a state with local magnetic moments. Simultaneous simulation of the structural, electric, and magnetic properties of this compound is of fundamental importance, but the M1 phase alone has posed a significant challenge to the density functional theory (DFT). In this study, we show none of the commonly used DFT functionals, including those combined with on-site Hubbard U to treat 3d electrons better, can accurately predict the V–V dimer length. The spin-restricted method tends to overestimate the strength of the V–V bonds, resulting in a small V–V bond length. Conversely, the spin-symmetry-breaking method exhibits the opposite trends. Each of these two bond-calculation methods underscores one of the two contentious mechanisms, i.e., Peierls lattice distortion or Mott localization due to electron–electron repulsion, involved in the metal–insulator transition in VO2. To elucidate the challenges encountered in DFT, we also employ an effective Hamiltonian that integrates one-dimensional magnetic sites, thereby revealing the inherent difficulties linked with the DFT computations. Topological spin/polarization structures in ferroic materials continue to draw great attention as a result of their fascinating physical behaviors and promising applications in the field of high-density nonvolatile memories as well as future energy-efficient nanoelectronic and spintronic devices. Such developments have been made, in part, based on recent advances in theoretical calculations, the synthesis of high-quality thin films, and the characterization of their emergent phenomena and exotic phases. Herein, progress over the last decade in the study of topological structures in ferroic thin films and heterostructures is explored, including the observation of topological structures and control of their structures and emergent physical phenomena through epitaxial strain, layer thickness, electric, magnetic fields, etc. First, the evolution of topological spin structures (e.g., magnetic skyrmions) and associated functionalities (e.g., topological Hall effect) in magnetic thin films and heterostructures is discussed. Then, the exotic polar topologies (e.g., domain walls, closure domains, polar vortices, bubble domains, and polar skyrmions) and their emergent physical properties in ferroelectric oxide films and heterostructures are explored. Finally, a brief overview and prospectus of how the field may evolve in the coming years is provided.

Controlling magnetization dynamics is imperative for developing ultrafast spintronics and tunable microwave devices. However, the previous research has demonstrated limited electric-field modulation of the effective magnetic damping, a parameter that governs the magnetization dynamics. Here, we propose an approach to manipulate the damping by using the large damping enhancement induced by the two-magnon scattering and a nonlocal spin relaxation process in which spin currents are resonantly transported from antiferromagnetic domains to ferromagnetic matrix in a mixed-phased metallic alloy FeRh. This damping enhancement in FeRh is sensitive to its fraction of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases, which can be dynamically tuned by electric fields through a strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling. In a heterostructure of FeRh and piezoelectric PMN-PT, we demonstrated a more than 120% modulation of the effective damping by electric fields during the antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. Our results demonstrate an efficient approach to controlling the magnetization dynamics, thus enabling low-power tunable electronics.

Spintronic elements based on spin transfer torque have emerged with potential for on-chip memory, but they suffer from large energy dissipation due to the large current densities required. In contrast, an electric-field-driven magneto-electric storage element can operate with capacitive displacement charge and potentially reach 1-10 µJ cm-2 switching operation. Here, magneto-electric switching of a magnetoresistive element is shown, operating at or below 200 mV, with a pathway to get down to 100 mV. A combination of phase detuning is utilized via isovalent La substitution and thickness scaling in multiferroic BiFeO3 to scale the switching energy density to ≈10 µJ cm-2 . This work provides a template to achieve attojoule-class nonvolatile memories.

A room temperature amorphous ferromagnetic oxide semiconductor can substantially reduce the cost and complexity associated with utilizing crystalline materials for spintronic devices. We report a new material (Fe0.66Dy0.24Tb0.1)3O7-x (FDTO), which shows semiconducting behavior with reasonable electrical conductivity (~500 mOhm-cm), an optical band-gap (2.4 eV), and a large enough magnetic moment (~200 emu/cc), all of which can be tuned by varying the oxygen content during deposition. Magnetoelectric devices were made by integrating ultrathin FDTO with multiferroic BiFeO3. A strong enhancement in the magnetic coercive field of FDTO grown on BiFeO3 validated a large exchange coupling between them. Additionally, FDTO served as an excellent top electrode for ferroelectric switching in BiFeO3 with no sign of degradation after ~1010 switching cycles. RT magneto-electric coupling was demonstrated by modulating the resistance states of spin-valve structures using electric fields.

The ability to tailor a new crystalline structure and associated functionalities with a variety of stimuli is one of the key issues in material design. Developing synthetic routes to functional materials with partially absorbed nonmetallic elements (i.e., hydrogen and nitrogen) can open up more possibilities for preparing novel families of electronically active oxide compounds. Fast and reversible uptake and release of hydrogen in epitaxial ABO3 manganite films through an adapted low-frequency inductively coupled plasma technology is introduced. Compared with traditional dopants of metallic cations, the plasma-assisted hydrogen implantations not only produce reversibly structural transformations from pristine perovskite (PV) phase to a newly found protonation-driven brownmillerite one but also regulate remarkably different electronic properties driving the material from a ferromagnetic metal to a weakly ferromagnetic insulator for a range of manganite (La1−xSrxMnO3) thin films. Moreover, a reversible perovskite-brownmillerite-perovskite transition is achieved at a relatively low temperature (T ≤ 350 °C), enabling multifunctional modulations for integrated electronic systems. The fast, low-temperature control of structural and electronic properties by the facile hydrogenation/dehydrogenation treatment substantially widens the space for exploring new possibilities of novel properties in proton-based multifunctional materials.

We have studied low-energy configurations in two-dimensional arrays consisting of Ising-type dipolar coupled nanomagnets lithographically defined onto a two-dimensional Cairo lattice, thus dubbed the dipolar Cairo lattice. Employing synchrotron-based photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM), we perform real-space imaging of moment configurations achieved after thermal annealing. These states are then characterized in terms of vertex populations, spin- and emergent magnetic charge correlations, and a topology-enforced emergent ice rule. The results reveal a strong dominance of short-range correlations and the absence of long-range order, reflecting the high degree of geometrical spin frustration present in this example of an artificial frustrated spin system.

Ferroelastic switching in ferroelectric/multiferroic oxides plays a crucial role in determining their dielectric, piezoelectric, and magnetoelectric properties. In thin films of these materials, however, substrate clamping is generally thought to limit the electric-field- or mechanical-force-driven responses to the local scale. Here, we report mechanical-force-induced large-area, non-local, collective ferroelastic domain switching in PbTiO3 epitaxial thin films by tuning the misfit-strain to be near a phase boundary wherein c/a and a1/a2 nanodomains coexist. Phenomenological models suggest that the collective, c-a-c-a ferroelastic switching arises from the small potential barrier between the degenerate domain structures, and the large anisotropy of a and c domains, which collectively generates much larger response and large-area domain propagation. Large-area, non-local response under small stimuli, unlike traditional local response to external field, provides an opportunity of unique response to local stimuli, which has potential for use in high-sensitivity pressure sensors and switches.

We report the pulsed-laser deposition of epitaxial double-perovskite Bi2FeCrO6(BFCO) films on the (001)-, (110), and (111)-oriented single-crystal SrTiO3 substrates. All of the BFCO films with various orientations show the 1/2 1/2 1/2 and 3/2 3/2 3/2 superlattice-diffraction peaks. The intensity ratios between the 1/2 1/2 1/2-superlattice and the main 111-diffraction peak can be tailored by simply adjusting the laser repetition rate and substrate temperature, reaching up to 4.4%. However, both optical absorption spectra and magnetic measurements evidence that the strong superlattice peaks are not correlated with the B-site Fe3+/Cr3+ cation ordering. Instead, the epitaxial (111)-oriented Bi2FeCrO6 films show an enhanced remanent polarization of 92 μC/cm2 at 10 K, much larger than the predicted values by density-functional theory calculations. Positive-up-negative-down (PUND) measurements with a time interval of 10 μs further support these observations. Therefore, our experimental results reveal that the strong superlattice peaks may come from A- or B-site cation shifts along the pseudo-cubic [111] direction, which further enhance the ferroelectric polarization of the BFCO thin films.

We explore the thermodynamics in two-dimensional arrays consisting of Ising-type nanomagnets lithographically arranged onto random sites and angular orientations. Introducing these basic spin-glass ingredients, we study the characteristic features of the low-energy states achieved, following thermal-annealing protocols. From direct visualization of real-time dynamics, we record relaxation timescales together with magnetic susceptibility variations over temperature, revealing trends towards short-range order as randomness is increased, but falling short of pure spin-glass behavior. Our work provides a route towards the realization of artificial Ising spin-glass systems.

Magnetic monopoles, proposed as elementary particles that act as isolated magnetic south and north poles, have long attracted research interest as magnetic analogs to electric charge. In solid-state physics, a classical analog to these elusive particles has emerged as topological excitations within pyrochlore spin ice systems. We present the first real-time imaging of emergent magnetic monopole motion in a macroscopically degenerate artificial spin ice system consisting of thermally activated Ising-type nanomagnets lithographically arranged onto a pre-etched silicon substrate. A real-space characterization of emergent magnetic monopoles within the framework of Debye-Hückel theory is performed, providing visual evidence that these topological defects act like a plasma of Coulomb-type magnetic charges. In contrast to vertex defects in a purely two-dimensional artificial square ice, magnetic monopoles are free to evolve within a divergence-free vacuum, a magnetic Coulomb phase, for which features in the form of pinch-point singularities in magnetic structure factors are observed.

Electric-field control of magnetism requires deterministic control of the magnetic order and understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics like BiFeO3 and EuTiO3. Despite this critical need, there are few studies on the strain evolution of magnetic order in BiFeO3 films. Here, in (110)-oriented BiFeO3 films, we reveal that while the polarization structure remains relatively unaffected, strain can continuously tune the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis across a wide angular space, resulting in an unexpected deviation of the classical perpendicular relationship between the antiferromagnetic axis and the polarization. Calculations suggest that this evolution arises from a competition between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy wherein the former dominates at small strains and the two are comparable at large strains. Finally, strong coupling between the BiFeO3 and the ferromagnet Co0.9Fe0.1 exists such that the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnet can be effectively controlled by engineering the orientation of the antiferromagnetic-spin axis.

The desire for low-power/voltage operation of devices is driving renewed interest in understanding scaling effects in ferroelectric thin films. As the dimensions of ferroelectrics are reduced, the properties can vary dramatically, including the robust scaling relationship between coercive field ( Ec) and thickness ( d), also referred to as the Janovec-Kay-Dunn (JKD) law, wherein Ec ∝ d-2/3. Here, we report that whereas (001)-oriented heterostructures follow JKD scaling across the thicknesses range of 20-330 nm, (111)-oriented heterostructures of the canonical tetragonal ferroelectric PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 exhibit a deviation from JKD scaling wherein a smaller scaling exponent for the evolution of Ec is observed in films of thickness ≲ 165 nm. X-ray diffraction reveals that whereas (001)-oriented heterostructures remain tetragonal for all thicknesses, (111)-oriented heterostructures exhibit a transition from tetragonal-to-monoclinic symmetry in films of thickness ≲ 165 nm as a result of the compressive strain. First-principles calculations suggest that this symmetry change contributes to the deviation from the expected scaling, as the monoclinic phase has a lower energy barrier for switching. This structural evolution also gives rise to changes in the c/ a lattice parameter ratio, wherein this ratio increases and decreases in (001)- and (111)-oriented heterostructures, respectively, as the films are made thinner. In (111)-oriented heterostructures, this reduced tetragonality drives a reduction of the remanent polarization and, therefore, a reduction of the domain-wall energy and overall energy barrier to switching, which further exacerbates the deviation from the expected scaling. Overall, this work demonstrates a route toward reducing coercive fields in ferroelectric thin films and provides a possible mechanism to understand the deviation from JKD scaling.

Complex-oxide materials tuned to be near phase boundaries via chemistry/composition, temperature, pressure, etc. are known to exhibit large susceptibilities. Here, we observe a strain-driven nanoscale phase competition in epitaxially constrained Bi0.7La0.3FeO3 thin films near the antipolar-nonpolar phase boundary and explore the evolution of the structural, dielectric, (anti)ferroelectric, and magnetic properties with strain. We find that compressive and tensile strains can stabilize an antipolar PbZrO3-like Pbam phase and a nonpolar Pnma orthorhombic phase, respectively. Heterostructures grown with little to no strain exhibit a self-assembled nanoscale mixture of the two orthorhombic phases, wherein the relative fraction of each phase can be modified with film thickness. Subsequent investigation of the dielectric and (anti)ferroelectric properties reveals an electric-field-driven phase transformation from the nonpolar phase to the antipolar phase. X-ray linear dichroism reveals that the antiferromagnetic-spin axes can be effectively modified by the strain-induced phase transition. This evolution of antiferromagnetic-spin axes can be leveraged in exchange coupling between the antiferromagnetic Bi0.7La0.3FeO3 and a ferromagnetic Co0.9Fe0.1 layer to tune the ferromagnetic easy axis of the Co0.9Fe0.1. These results demonstrate that besides chemical alloying, epitaxial strain is an alternative and effective way to modify subtle phase relations and tune physical properties in rare earth-alloyed BiFeO3. Furthermore, the observation of antiferroelectric-antiferromagnetic properties in the Pbam Bi0.7La0.3FeO3 phase could be of significant scientific interest and great potential in magnetoelectric devices because of its dual antiferroic nature.

Antiferroelectric PbZrO3 is being considered for a wide range of applications where the competition between centrosymmetric and noncentrosymmetric phases is important to the response. Here, we focus on the epitaxial growth of PbZrO3 thin films and understanding the chemistry-structure coupling in Pb1+δZrO3 (δ = 0, 0.1, 0.2). High-quality, single-phase Pb1+δZrO3 films are synthesized via pulsed-laser deposition. Although no significant lattice parameter change is observed in X-ray studies, electrical characterization reveals that while the PbZrO3 and Pb1.1ZrO3 heterostructures remain intrinsically antiferroelectric, the Pb1.2ZrO3 heterostructures exhibit a hysteresis loop indicative of ferroelectric response. Further X-ray scattering studies reveal strong quarter-order diffraction peaks in PbZrO3 and Pb1.1ZrO3 heterostructures indicative of antiferroelectricity, while no such peaks are observed for Pb1.2ZrO3 heterostructures. Density functional theory calculations suggest the large cation nonstoichiometry is accommodated by incorporation of antisite PbZr defects, which drive the Pb1.2ZrO3 heterostructures to a ferroelectric phase with R3c symmetry. In the end, stabilization of metastable phases in materials via chemical nonstoichiometry and defect engineering enables a novel route to manipulate the energy of the ground state of materials and the corresponding material properties.

A wealth of fascinating phenomena have been discovered at the BiFeO3 domain walls, examples such as domain wall conductivity, photovoltaic effects, and magnetoelectric coupling. Thus, the ability to precisely control the domain structures and accurately study their switching behaviors is critical to realize the next generation of novel devices based on domain wall functionalities. In this work, the introduction of a dielectric layer leads to the tunability of the depolarization field both in the multilayers and superlattices, which provides a novel approach to control the domain patterns of BiFeO3 films. Moreover, we are able to study the switching behavior of the first time obtained periodic 109° stripe domains with a thick bottom electrode. Besides, the precise controlling of pure 71° and 109° periodic stripe domain walls enable us to make a clear demonstration that the exchange bias in the ferromagnet/BiFeO3 system originates from 109° domain walls. Our findings provide future directions to study the room temperature electric field control of exchange bias and open a new pathway to explore the room temperature multiferroic vortices in the BiFeO3 system.

A novel approach to on-demand improvement of electronic properties in complex-oxide ferroelectrics is demonstrated whereby ion bombardment - commonly used in classic semiconductor materials - is applied to the PbTiO3 system. The result is deterministic reduction in leakage currents by 5 orders of magnitude, improved ferroelectric switching, and unprecedented insights into the nature of defects and intergap state evolution in these materials.

We explore the effect of growth conditions on the cation and anion chemistry, electrical leakage, conduction mechanisms, and ferroelectric and dielectric behavior of BiFeO3. Although it is possible to produce single-phase, coherently strained films in all cases, small variations in the pulsed-laser deposition growth process, specifically the laser repetition rate and target composition, result in films with chemistries ranging from 10% Bi-deficiency to 4% Bi-excess and films possessing Bi gradients as large a 6% across the film thickness. Corresponding variations and gradients in the O chemistry are also observed. As a result of the varying film chemistry, marked differences in surface and domain morphology are observed wherein Bi-deficiency stabilizes atomically smooth surfaces and ordered stripe domains. Subsequent investigation of the current-voltage response reveals large differences in leakage current density arising from changes in both the overall stoichiometry and gradients. In turn, the film stoichiometry drives variations in the dominant conduction mechanism including examples of Schottky, Poole-Frenkel, and modified Poole-Frenkel emission depending on the film chemistry. Finally, slightly Bi-excess films are found to exhibit the best low-frequency ferroelectric and dielectric response while increasing Bi-deficiency worsens the low-frequency ferroelectric performance and reduces the dielectric permittivity.

Ferroelectrics, with their spontaneous switchable electric polarization and strong coupling between their electrical, mechanical, thermal, and optical responses, provide functionalities crucial for a diverse range of applications. Over the past decade, there has been significant progress in epitaxial strain engineering of oxide ferroelectric thin films to control and enhance the nature of ferroelectric order, alter ferroelectric susceptibilities, and to create new modes of response which can be harnessed for various applications. This review aims to cover some of the most important discoveries in strain engineering over the past decade and highlight some of the new and emerging approaches for strain control of ferroelectrics. We discuss how these new approaches to strain engineering provide promising routes to control and decouple ferroelectric susceptibilities and create new modes of response not possible in the confines of conventional strain engineering. To conclude, we will provide an overview and prospectus of these new and interesting modalities of strain engineering helping to accelerate their widespread development and implementation in future functional devices.

Epitaxial strain can be used to tune the properties of complex oxides with perovskite structure. Beyond just lattice mismatch, the use of octahedral rotation mismatch at heterointerfaces could also provide an effective route to manipulate material properties. Here, we examine the evolution of the structural motif (i.e., lattice parameters, symmetry, and octahedral rotations) of SrRuO3 films grown on substrates engineered to have the same lattice parameters, but different octahedral rotations. SrRuO3 films grown on SrTiO3 (001) (no octahedral rotations) and GdScO3-buffered SrTiO3 (001) (with octahedral rotations) substrates are found to exhibit monoclinic and tetragonal symmetry, respectively. Electrical transport and magnetic measurements reveal that the tetragonal films exhibit higher resistivity, lower magnetic Curie temperatures, and more isotropic magnetism as compared to those with monoclinic structure. Synchrotron-based quantification of the octahedral rotation network reveals that the tilting pattern in both film variants is the same (albeit with slightly different magnitudes of in-plane rotation angles). The abnormal rotation pattern observed in tetragonal SrRuO3 indicates a possible decoupling between the internal octahedral rotation and lattice symmetry, which could provide new opportunities to engineer thin-film structure and properties.

There is growing evidence that domain walls in ferroics can possess emergent properties that are absent in the bulk. For example, 180° ferroelectric domain walls in the ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic BiFeO3 are particularly interesting because they have been predicted to possess a range of intriguing behaviors, including electronic conduction and enhanced magnetization. To date, however, ordered arrays of such domain structures have not been reported. Here, we report the observation of 180° stripe nanodomains in (110)-oriented BiFeO3 thin films grown on orthorhombic GdScO3 (010)O substrates and their impact on exchange coupling to metallic ferromagnets. Nanoscale ferroelectric 180° stripe domains with {112̅} domain walls were observed in films

The orientation-dependent equilibrium ferroelectric domain structures and dielectric properties of polydomain PbZr1-xTixO3 thin films are investigated using a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire thermodynamic model. We develop and describe three-dimensional polydomain models for (001)-, (101)-, and (111)-oriented films and explore the evolution of the structure and dielectric permittivity of the system as a function of epitaxial strain across the composition range 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 1.0. Our studies reveal that the film orientation, epitaxial strain, and composition can combine in unexpected ways to drive exotic phase stability and transformations which have intriguing implications for the properties. In particular, in (101)- and (111)-oriented films, the application of epitaxial strains along non-〈001〉-type crystallographic directions significantly reduces the stability range of the parent tetragonal phase [which is dominant in (001)-oriented films] and results in a variety of new symmetries. We also observe that the film orientation can be used to tune the relative fraction of intrinsic (i.e., within a domain) and extrinsic (i.e., from domain wall motion) contributions to the dielectric permittivity. Ultimately these studies reveal how composition, epitaxial strain, and film orientation provide for comprehensive control of the structure and properties of ferroelectrics.

Sr2Ti7O14, a new phase, is synthesized by leveraging the innate chemical and thermo-dynamic instabilities in the SrTiO3-TiO2 system and non-equilibrium growth techniques. The chemical composition, epitaxial relationships, and orientation play roles in the formation of this novel layered phase, which, in turn, possesses unusual charge ordering, anti-ferromagnetic ordering, and low, glass-like thermal conductivity.
