12. Reputation dependent pricing strategy: analysis based on a Chinese C2C marketplace

Abstract

Most online markets establish reputation systems to assist building trust between sellers and buyers. Sellers' reputations not only provide guidelines for buyers but may also inform sellers their optimal pricing strategy. In this research, we assumed two types of buyer: informed buyers and uninformed buyers. Informed buyers know more about the reputation about the seller but may incur a search cost. Then we developed a benchmark model and a competition model. We found that high reputation sellers and low reputation sellers adapt different pricing strategy depending on the informativeness of buyers and the competition among sellers. With a large proportion of informed buyers, high reputation sellers may charge lower price than low reputation sellers, which exists a negative price premium effect, in contrast to conclusions of some previous studies. Empirical findings were in consistence with our theoretical models. We collected data of five categories of products, televisions, laptops, cosmetics, shoes, and beverages, from Taobao, a leading C2C Chinese online market. Negative price premium effect was observed for TVs, laptops, and cosmetics; price premium effect was observed for beverages; no significant trend was observed for shoes. We infer product value and market complexity are the main factors of buyer informativeness.

28. Effect of hydrogel stiffness on nucleus pulposus cell phenotypes in vitro and its repairment of intervertebral disc in vivo

Abstract

Objective·To investigate the effect of hydrogel stiffness on nucleus pulposus cell phenotype and its function in repairing intervertebral disc degeneration in rats.Methods·Methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) hydrogels with different concentrations were constructed. The stiffness of the hydrogels was investigated by using rheological analysis and uniaxial compression test. The microstructure and morphology of the hydrogels were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nucleus pulposus cells with normal phenotype were inoculated on the surface of GelMA hydrogels. The biocompatibility of the hydrogel was evaluated by live-dead cell staining and the growth pattern of nucleus pulposus cells on hydrogels with different stiffness was observed with phalloidin staining under microscope. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to examine the nuclear localization of Yes-associated protein (YAP) and real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression levels of nucleus pulposus cell-associated genes [neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (Ncam-1), aggrecan (Acan), sex-determing region of Y chromosome (SRY)-box transcription factor 9 (Sox9)]. A rat caudal acupuncture intervertebral disc degeneration model was established. Nucleus pulposus cells cultured on different hydrogels were harvested and injected into the degenerated discs separately. Four weeks after surgery, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to analyze the water content of the intervertebral discs in each group. Histological tests were performed to examine the disc structure and proteoglycan levels.Results·The elastic modulus of the hydrogels was 1 kPa and 200 kPa when the concentration of GelMA prepolymerisation solution was at 4% and 15% respectively. SEM observation revealed that the hydrogels showed a loose and porous microstructure, and the porosity of hydrogels decreased significantly with the decrease of their stiffness. In vitro experiments demonstrated that both GelMA hydrogel mediums showed good biocompatibility and the ability to support cell proliferation. Nucleus pulposus cells cultured on the soft matrix (4%GelMA) had a lower elongation and spreading area than those cultured on the stiff matrix (15%GelMA), showing a tendency of YAP concentration in the cytoplasm. The gene expression of nucleus pulposus cells was examined and the levels of Sox9, Acan and Ncam-1 in the soft matrix hydrogel group were 23.7, 6.6 and 12.7 times of those in the control group respectively. In vivo experiments on rat disc degeneration showed that the soft hydrogel matrix group had higher disc water content and structural integrity than the stiff hydrogel matrix group.Conclusion·Compared to stiff GelMA hydrogels, hydrogels with low stiffness better maintain the growth phenotypes in the nucleus pulposus cells and have better therapeutic effect on disc degeneration in vivo.

29. Attentive Semantic Exploring for Manipulated Face Detection

Abstract

Face manipulation methods develop rapidly in recent years, whose potential risk to society accounts for the emerging of researches on detection methods. However, due to the diversity of manipulation methods and the high quality of fake images, detection methods suffer from a lack of generalization ability. To solve the problem, we find that segmenting images into semantic fragments could be effective, as discriminative defects and distortions are closely related to such fragments. Besides, to highlight discriminative regions in fragments and to measure contribution to the final prediction of each fragment is efficient for the improvement of generalization ability. Therefore, we propose a novel manipulated face detection method based on Multilevel Facial Semantic Segmentation and Cascade Attention Mechanism. To evaluate our method, we reconstruct two datasets: GGFI and FFMI, and also collect two open-source datasets. Experiments on four datasets verify the advantages of our approach against other state-of-the-arts, especially its generalization ability.

Abstract

High-Z dopants such as chlorine, bromine and silicon in carbon–hydrogen polymer (CH) targets play a crucial role during the ablation of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). These dopants can serve as diagnostic tools in experiments and mitigate hot electron preheating, but they also influence the laser ablation. In this paper, the process of high-power laser ablating doped CH targets has been studied through radiation hydrodynamic simulations. Our findings reveal that the laser absorption rate in the doped targets increase as a result of the increasing electron-ion collision frequency. This leads to the increase of the electron, ion and radiation temperatures. Furthermore, high-Z dopants contribute to a decrease in the ablation pressure, which tends to a constant. Moreover, the saturation phenomenon of the mass ablation rate has been found. For the targets with low doping ratios (e.g. 6.25%–12.5%), the mass ablation rate increases until reaching the saturation at a doping ratio of 18.75%, after which it decreases. This indicates that an appropriate doping ratio can increase the laser absorption and ablation.
