Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common in postmenopausal women. These symptoms are often linked to decreased estrogen levels following menopause. This study investigated the relationship between estrogen levels, alterations in bladder tissue structure, bladder function, and the incidence of urinary frequency. An age-appropriate bilateral ovariectomized mouse model (OVX) was developed to simulate conditions of estrogen deficiency. Mice were divided into three groups: a sham-operated control group, OVX, and an estradiol-treated group. The assessments included estrogen level measurement, urination frequency, cystometry, histological analysis, immunofluorescence staining, and real-time quantitative PCR. Additionally, we quantified the expression of the mechanosensitive channel proteins Piezo1 and TRPV4 in mouse bladder tissues. Lower estrogen levels were linked to increased voiding episodes and structural changes in mouse bladder tissues, notably a significant increase in Collagen III fiber deposition. There was a detectable negative relationship between estrogen levels and the expression of Piezo1 and TRPV4, mechanosensitive proteins in mouse bladder tissues, which may influence voiding frequency and nocturia. Estrogen treatment could improve bladder function, decrease urination frequency, and reduce collagen deposition in the bladder tissues. This study explored the connection between estrogen levels and urinary frequency, potentially setting the stage for novel methods to address frequent urination symptoms in postmenopausal women. Background: The small bowel (SB) represents the most important dose-limiting structure in pelvic radiotherapy (RT). However, we observed that the majority of rectal cancer patients who received preoperative pelvic intensity modulated RT (IMRT) developed acute tenesmus without watery diarrhea. The objective of this study is to determine if the RT dose to SB affects the acute lower gastrointestinal toxicity (ALGIT) in rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant concurrent chemotherapy-IMRT. We will also evaluate if patient and tumor factors affect the ALGIT.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 63 rectal cancer patients that consecutively received preoperative IMRT (45 Gy for pelvis and 50 Gy for gross tumor in 25 fractions) with concurrent chemotherapy (oxaliplatin 130 mg/m(2) on day 1 and capecitabine 825 mg/m(2), twice per day from day 1 to day 14, week 1 and 4) between May 2012 and May 2013. The ALGIT was assessed with Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 3. The patients were stratified into two groups (with and without grade ≥2 ALGIT). The effect of SB volume receiving 5 to 40 Gy (V5 to V40) at a 5 Gy interval dose level on grade ≥2 ALGIT was evaluated. The volume of small bowel is defined as the volume of the small bowel loop. Other factors evaluated include patient's age and gender, tumor size and location and preexisting number of daily bowel movements.Results: Overall, grade ≥2 ALGIT occurred in 57 % (36/63) patients. There was no significant difference between the two groups of patients (with and without grade ≥2 ALGIT) in SB V5 to V40, patient's age and gender, tumor location and preexisting number of daily bowel movements. There was a significant difference between the two groups of patients in tumor volume (with grade ≥2 ALGIT: 115.5 ± 85.5 cm(3) versus without grade ≥2 ALGIT: 58.5 ± 25.2 cm(3), p = 0.0001). Multivariate analysis revealed no association between the dose SB received (V5 to V40) and the grade ≥2 ALGIT after adjusting for the tumor volume.Conclusions: With IMRT technique used in rectal cancer patients undergoing preoperative chemo-radiotherapy, the acute lower GI toxicity is not associated with small bowel V5 to V40; instead it is associated with rectal tumor size. Background: Nephrolithiasis seriously affects people's health with increasing prevalence and high recurrence rates. However, there is still a lack of effective interventions for the clinical prevention of kidney stones. Hyperoxaluria-induced renal tubular epithelial cell (TEC) injury is a known key factor in kidney stone formation. Thus, developing new drugs to inhibit the hyperoxaluria-induced TEC injury may be the best way., Methods: We synthesized the Se@SiO 2 nanocomposites as described in Zhu's study. The size and morphology of the Se@SiO 2 nanocomposites were captured by transmission electron microscopy. Cell viability was measured by a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The mice were randomly divided into the following four groups: (I) the control group (n=6); (II) the Se@SiO 2 group (n=6); (III) the glyoxylic acid monohydrate (GAM) group; and (IV) the GAM + Se@SiO 2 group (n=6). The concentration of Se in the mice was quantified using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy., Results: The CCK-8 assays showed that Se@SiO 2 nanocomposites had almost no obvious cytotoxicity on the Transformed C3H Mouse Kidney-1 (TCMK-1) cell. The mice kidney Se concentration levels in the Se@SiO 2 groups (Se@SiO 2 6.905±0.074 mg/kg; GAM + Se@SiO 2 7.673±2.85 mg/kg) (n=6) were significantly higher than those in the control group (Control 0.727±0.072 mg/kg; GAM 0.747±0.074 mg/kg) (n=6). Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of frenulum protection technique of the disposable circumcision suture device (DCSD) in adult males., Materials and Methods: Atotal of 53 adult males were diagnosed with redundant prepuce and underwent circumcision with DCSD using frenulum protection technique. The main preoperative and postoperative measure of the length of penile frenulum was evaluated. Other data such as edema rate, intraoperative blood loss, operation time, postoperative pain, staple falling off time, incision infection rate, and evaluation of satisfaction rate with penis appearance were documented in the study., Results: There was no significant difference in preoperative and postoperative frenulum length for each patient. The mean length of the penile frenulum before and after surgery was 2.25 ± 0.36 cm and 2.23 ± 0.39 cm, respectively (p = .31). The rate of frenulum length preservation was 100%. All the patients had no excessive resection of the frenulum and no serious complication happened after surgery. The satisfaction rate of postoperative penis appearance from patients' evaluation was 98.1% (52/53)., Conclusion: The frenulum protection technique was simple and operable, which could help the operator to accurately identify the most distal position of the frenulum and retain a sufficient length of frenulum during DCSD circumcision.
