1. Exploring Plain ViT Reconstruction for Multi-class Unsupervised Anomaly Detection

Abstract

This work studies a challenging and practical issue known as multi-class unsupervised anomaly detection (MUAD). This problem requires only normal images for training while simultaneously testing both normal and anomaly images across multiple classes. Existing reconstruction-based methods typically adopt pyramidal networks as encoders and decoders to obtain multi-resolution features, often involving complex sub-modules with extensive handcraft engineering. In contrast, a plain Vision Transformer (ViT) showcasing a more straightforward architecture has proven effective in multiple domains, including detection and segmentation tasks. It is simpler, more effective, and elegant. Following this spirit, we explore the use of only plain ViT features for MUAD. We first abstract a Meta-AD concept by synthesizing current reconstruction-based methods. Subsequently, we instantiate a novel ViT-based ViTAD structure, designed incrementally from both global and local perspectives. This model provide a strong baseline to facilitate future research. Additionally, this paper uncovers several intriguing findings for further investigation. Finally, we comprehensively and fairly benchmark various approaches using eight metrics. Utilizing a basic training regimen with only an MSE loss, ViTAD achieves state-of-the-art results and efficiency on MVTec AD, VisA, and Uni-Medical datasets. \Eg, achieving 85.4 mAD that surpasses UniAD by +3.0 for the MVTec AD dataset, and it requires only 1.1 hours and 2.3G GPU memory to complete model training on a single V100 that can serve as a strong baseline to facilitate the development of future research. Abstract

Reconstruction-based approaches have achieved remarkable outcomes in anomaly detection. The exceptional image reconstruction capabilities of recently popular diffusion models have sparked research efforts to utilize them for enhanced reconstruction of anomalous images. Nonetheless, these methods might face challenges related to the preservation of image categories and pixel-wise structural integrity in the more practical multi-class setting. To solve the above problems, we propose a Difusion-based Anomaly Detection (DiAD) framework for multi-class anomaly detection, which consists of a pixel-space autoencoder, a latent-space Semantic-Guided (SG) network with a connection to the stable diffusion's denoising network, and a feature-space pre-trained feature extractor. Firstly, The SG network is proposed for reconstructing anomalous regions while preserving the original image's semantic information. Secondly, we introduce Spatial-aware Feature Fusion (SFF) block to maximize reconstruction accuracy when dealing with extensively reconstructed areas. Thirdly, the input and reconstructed images are processed by a pre-trained feature extractor to generate anomaly maps based on features extracted at different scales. Experiments on MVTec-AD and VisA datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach which surpasses the state-of-the-art methods, e.g., achieving 96.8/52.6 and 97.2/99.0 (AUROC/AP) for localization and detection respectively on multi-class MVTec-AD dataset. 3. GPT-4V-AD: Exploring Grounding Potential of VQA-oriented GPT-4V for Zero-shot Anomaly Detection

Abstract

Large Multimodal Model (LMM) GPT-4V(ision) endows GPT-4 with visual grounding capabilities, making it possible to handle certain tasks through the Visual Question Answering (VQA) paradigm. This paper explores the potential of VQA-oriented GPT-4V in the recently popular visual Anomaly Detection (AD) and is the first to conduct qualitative and quantitative evaluations on the popular MVTec AD and VisA datasets. Considering that this task requires both image-/pixel-level evaluations, the proposed GPT-4V-AD framework contains three components: \textbf{\textit{1)}} Granular Region Division, \textbf{\textit{2)}} Prompt Designing, \textbf{\textit{3)}} Text2Segmentation for easy quantitative evaluation, and have made some different attempts for comparative analysis. The results show that GPT-4V can achieve certain results in the zero-shot AD task through a VQA paradigm, such as achieving image-level 77.1/88.0 and pixel-level 68.0/76.6 AU-ROCs on MVTec AD and VisA datasets, respectively. However, its performance still has a certain gap compared to the state-of-the-art zero-shot method, \eg, WinCLIP and CLIP-AD, and further researches are needed. This study provides a baseline reference for the research of VQA-oriented LMM in the zero-shot AD task, and we also post several possible future works. 4. CLIP-AD: A Language-Guided Staged Dual-Path Model for Zero-shot Anomaly Detection

Abstract

This paper considers zero-shot Anomaly Detection (AD), performing AD without reference images of the test objects. We propose a framework called CLIP-AD to leverage the zero-shot capabilities of the large vision-language model CLIP. Firstly, we reinterpret the text prompts design from a distributional perspective and propose a Representative Vector Selection (RVS) paradigm to obtain improved text features. Secondly, we note opposite predictions and irrelevant highlights in the direct computation of the anomaly maps. To address these issues, we introduce a Staged Dual-Path model (SDP) that leverages features from various levels and applies architecture and feature surgery. Lastly, delving deeply into the two phenomena, we point out that the image and text features are not aligned in the joint embedding space. Thus, we introduce a fine-tuning strategy by adding linear layers and construct an extended model SDP+, further enhancing the performance. Abundant experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, e.g., on MVTec-AD, SDP outperforms the SOTA WinCLIP by +4.2/+10.7 in segmentation metrics F1-max/PRO, while SDP+ achieves +8.3/+20.5 improvements.

6. APRIL-GAN: A Zero-/Few-Shot Anomaly Classification and Segmentation Method for CVPR 2023 VAND Workshop Challenge Tracks 1&2: 1st Place on Zero-shot AD and 4th Place on Few-shot AD

Abstract

In this technical report, we briefly introduce our solution for the Zero/Few-shot Track of the Visual Anomaly and Novelty Detection (VAND) 2023 Challenge. For industrial visual inspection, building a single model that can be rapidly adapted to numerous categories without or with only a few normal reference images is a promising research direction. This is primarily because of the vast variety of the product types. For the zero-shot track, we propose a solution based on the CLIP model by adding extra linear layers. These layers are used to map the image features to the joint embedding space, so that they can compare with the text features to generate the anomaly maps. Besides, when the reference images are available, we utilize multiple memory banks to store their features and compare them with the features of the test images during the testing phase. In this challenge, our method achieved first place in the zero-shot track, especially excelling in segmentation with an impressive F1 score improvement of 0.0489 over the second-ranked participant. Furthermore, in the few-shot track, we secured the fourth position overall, with our classification F1 score of 0.8687 ranking first among all participating teams.

7. Better 'CMOS' Produces Clearer Images: Learning Space-Variant Blur Estimation for Blind Image Super-Resolution

Abstract

Most of the existing blind image Super-Resolution (SR) methods assume that the blur kernels are space-invariant. However, the blur involved in real applications are usually space-variant due to object motion, out-of-focus, etc., resulting in severe performance drop of the advanced SR methods. To address this problem, we firstly introduce two new datasets with out-of-focus blur, i.e., NYUv2-BSR and Cityscapes-BSR, to support further researches of blind SR with space-variant blur. Based on the datasets, we design a novel Cross-MOdal fuSion network (CMOS) that estimate both blur and semantics simultaneously, which leads to improved SR results. It involves a feature Grouping Interactive Attention (GIA) module to make the two modalities interact more effectively and avoid inconsistency. GIA can also be used for the interaction of other features because of the universality of its structure. Qualitative and quantitative experiments compared with state-of-the-art methods on above datasets and real-world images demonstrate the superiority of our method, e.g., obtaining PSNR/SSIM by +1.91/+0.0048 on NYUv2-BSR than MANet., Comment: Accepted by CVPR 2023

8. Examining the Relationship between Social Class and Well-Being in Chinese Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Basic Psychological Needs

Abstract

Considerable evidence has shown that social class has a positive relationship with well-being. However, little research has examined this connection in detail, particularly as it relates to the context of adolescence. The present study builds on the framework of Self-Determination Theory, to delineate the psychological mechanism underlying this relationship in adolescents. Study 1 explored the correlation between objective social class and hedonic well-being with national adolescent data (n = 944) from the China Family Panel Studies. The results showed that objective social class was positively correlated with hedonic well-being. Study 2 more fully examined the correlation and potential mechanism of the relationship between social class and hedonic/eudaimonic well-being among 625 adolescents. The results confirmed that social class is correlated with hedonic/eudaimonic well-being and that basic psychological needs satisfaction (BPNS) fully mediates the relationships between them. These findings emphasize the role of BPNS in this relationship among adolescents.

Abstract

Industrial anomaly detection is generally addressed as an unsupervised task that aims at locating defects with only normal training samples. Recently, numerous 2D anomaly detection methods have been proposed and have achieved promising results, however, using only the 2D RGB data as input is not sufficient to identify imperceptible geometric surface anomalies. Hence, in this work, we focus on multi-modal anomaly detection. Specifically, we investigate early multi-modal approaches that attempted to utilize models pre-trained on large-scale visual datasets, i.e., ImageNet, to construct feature databases. And we empirically find that directly using these pre-trained models is not optimal, it can either fail to detect subtle defects or mistake abnormal features as normal ones. This may be attributed to the domain gap between target industrial data and source data.Towards this problem, we propose a Local-to-global Self-supervised Feature Adaptation (LSFA) method to finetune the adaptors and learn task-oriented representation toward anomaly detection.Both intra-modal adaptation and cross-modal alignment are optimized from a local-to-global perspective in LSFA to ensure the representation quality and consistency in the inference stage.Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method not only brings a significant performance boost to feature embedding based approaches, but also outperforms previous State-of-The-Art (SoTA) methods prominently on both MVTec-3D AD and Eyecandies datasets, e.g., LSFA achieves 97.1% I-AUROC on MVTec-3D, surpass previous SoTA by +3.4%.

10. Are monetary gifts negatively labeled? Material benefits and prosocial motivation evaluation.

Abstract

We examined whether people perceive prosocial actors' prosocial motivations differently when prosocial actors gain monetary gifts and goods gifts. Across five studies, 1351 participants read different prosocial scenarios that depicted prosocial actors who gained either monetary or goods gifts. Then, they evaluated the prosocial motivations of the prosocial actors. Studies 1–5 consistently found that people perceived prosocial motivations to be less authentic when prosocial actors chose to receive monetary gifts compared with goods gifts. In addition, moral disgust and moral character evaluation mediated this effect (Studies 3–4). Moreover, the negative effect of monetary gifts on people's perception of prosocial motivation further undermined their helping intention to prosocial actors (Study 5). Our research expanded the understanding of people's perception of material gifts in prosocial behavior by proposing the model of monetary benefits aggravated tainted altruism. Abstract

Volunteering benefits individuals and society but is hard to sustain, especially in emergencies. Based on the volunteer process model and self‐determination theory, this study identified the optimal number of motivations and positive experiences profiles and investigated these profiles' relationships with volunteers' sustained volunteering during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Seven hundred and eighteen volunteers completed a series of measures about motivations to volunteer (e.g., autonomous and controlled), positive experiences (e.g., satisfaction, meaningfulness and happiness) and sustained volunteering. Results indicated that meaningfulness and happiness positively predicted sustained volunteering but satisfaction did not. Furthermore, we identified four distinct groups using latent profile analysis: the highest autonomy‐best experience group (34.96%), high autonomy‐well experience group (44.84%), moderate autonomy‐general experience group (17.83%) and low autonomy‐bad experience group (2.37%). Volunteers in the highest autonomy‐best experience group showed the highest level of sustained volunteering compared to those in other groups. These findings suggest that volunteers' motivations and positive experiences play a combined role in sustained volunteering. They also have significance for fostering long‐term volunteering. Abstract

The relationships between the temporal focus of mind-wandering (i.e., past-oriented and future-oriented mind-wandering) and well-being are important issues for adolescents, which may have significant implications on their well-being and self-identity development. However, few studies tested the temporal focus of mind-wandering and its emotional consequences in adolescents. In the present study, we conducted two studies using self-reported questionnaires from large sample sets to examine the relationships between the temporal focus of mind-wandering and hedonic (pleasure attainment) and eudaimonic (meaning pursuing) well-being among Chinese adolescents. Study 1 preliminarily tested the relationships between the temporal focus of mind-wandering and hedonic well-being among adolescents (n = 1273) suggesting that both past-oriented mind-wandering (PMW) and future-oriented mind-wandering (FMW) were positively correlated with hedonic well-being. Study 2 used a new sample (n = 986) and included another aspect of well-being (i.e., eudaimonic well-being), showing that PMW and FMW were both positively correlated with hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. Moreover, self-reflection mediated the relationships between FMW and hedonic/eudaimonic well-being, whereas self-reflection did not act as a mediator in the relationships between PMW and well-being. The present findings indicated that both PMW and FMW are beneficial for Chinese adolescents' well-being, and emphasized the mediating role of self-reflection in the relationships between FMW and well-being. 40. A novel pre-synchronization control for grid connection of virtual synchronous generator

Abstract

The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) introduces rotational inertia and damping through the droop control to take part in frequency regulation of the grid. By building the VSG model, the VSG controller, including both the frequency controller and the excitation controller, are analysed and designed. The analysis shows that the large phase difference Δθ between the VSG voltage and the grid voltage at the grid-tied moment may produce large power and damage the VSG. The proposed pre-synchronization control minimizes the phase difference, which is implemented by replacing Δθ with sinΔθ to avoid any step change from Δθ. The proposed method is able to simplify control, shorten pre-synchronization tracking time, and achieve high accuracy without a phase-lock loop. The built 12 kW VSG simulation and prototype verify the theoretical analysis, the proposed control and its associated design.

41. Design of High-Power Energy Storage Bidirectional Power Conversion System

Abstract

Aiming at problems of the energy storage PCS (power conversion system) with more applications and complicated working conditions, it is difficult to cover all applications with a single control scheme. This paper analyzes and designs the energy storage PCS in the state of grid-tied and islanding operation modes. Control schemes are designed for PCS working in different applications. The output current control in synchronous rotating coordinate system is adopted during grid-tied operation. The droop control is used during stand-alone parallel operation. In order to verify the design and control, a 500 kW PCS prototype was built and tested. The experiments show that the prototype has good performance and high working stability, including output current or voltage THD, efficiency, steady state, transition between grid-tied and stand-alone mode etc. The output current control and droop control adopted by the system can meet the requirements under different working conditions.

43. The neural habituation to hedonic and eudaimonic rewards: Evidence from reward positivity.

Abstract

Rewards play an important role in people's well‐being. However, the mechanisms underlying neural habituation to hedonic rewards (attainment of pleasure) and eudaimonic rewards (attainment of meaning and self‐realization) and their implications for longitudinal changes in well‐being remain unknown. By operationalizing hedonic rewards as "winning money for oneself" and eudaimonic rewards as "winning money for a charity", 78 participants (41 women, aged from 17 to 24 years) completed a revised monetary gambling task during event‐related potential (ERP) recording. Subsequently, the participants' well‐being was measured after one year. The results showed that the reward positivity (RewP) effect readily decreased as the hedonic rewards were repeated, whereas the RewP effect in response to eudaimonic rewards was relatively sustained over time. Moreover, the declining RewP effect for repeated eudaimonic rewards was marginally positively associated with longitudinal decreases in well‐being. These findings demonstrate at the neural level that sensitivity to repeated hedonic rewards is more prone to decrease than sensitivity to repeated eudaimonic rewards, and sustained eudaimonic reward sensitivity in the short term has greater implications for changes in well‐being in the long term. Abstract

In this study, we investigated whether self‐relevant information can accelerate the processing of emotional information. Our experiment, based on a passive auditory oddball paradigm, involved recording electroencephalography while participants listened to stimuli comprising their own names (ONs) and unfamiliar names (UNs) spoken with varying emotional prosody. At 220–300 ms, mismatch negativity (MMN) was more negative for ONs and angry prosody than for UNs and neutral prosody, respectively. These results suggest that attention is involuntarily attracted by ONs and emotional prosody, and that both types of information are given priority processing, even under pre‐attentive conditions. Importantly, ONs with angry prosody induced more negative MMN than did similar UNs and ONs with neutral prosody, which indicates that the motivational significance embedded in angry prosody promotes the self‐reference effect and, thus, involves more attention resources. At 300–500 ms, ONs triggered smaller P3a than did UNs, suggesting that less cognitive resources are required to process self‐relevant information. These results suggest that self‐relevant and emotional information of preferential processing interact with each other during the pre‐attentive stage, with self‐reference enhancing the processing of emotional information. 47. Nice Guys Finish Last? The Effect of Lay Theories on Prosocial Actors’ Motivation and Future Benefits

Abstract

Lin-Healy and Small found that laypeople believed that selfless prosocial actors were less likely than their selfish counterparts to benefit from their acts—that is, “nice guys finish last” (Study 1). The purpose of the current research was to replicate and extend their results. Our first three studies asked laypeople to estimate selfless or selfish prosocial actors’ future benefits. Inconsistent with the original results, we found that both Eastern and Western laypeople believed that selfless actors were more likely to benefit than selfish actors (Studies 1 and 2), and the belief in a just world moderated this effect (Study 3). Study 4 asked participants to choose an agent among three prosocial actors with different motivations to gamble for a monetary reward. The results showed that laypeople were more likely to choose a selfless agent to make the bet. The findings indicate that laypeople believe that authentic altruistic actors obtain future benefits.
