Abstract

This Open Access book introduces readers to the regional geology of Hanggai, Xianxia and Chuancun, the area between China's northern Zhejiang Province and southern Anhui Province and explores the strata, magmatic rocks and tectonic structures in 1:50,000 scale geological maps. Based on studies of multiple stratigraphic divisions, the standard stratigraphic section of the upper Ordovician Hirnantian in the lower Yangtze region is established, revealing for the first time numerous “Burgess Shale-type” sponge fossils in Hirnantian strata and identifying 10 grapholite fossil belts and various fossil categories, including chitin, trilobites, gastropods, brachiopods, and cephalopods. Moreover, the book identifies for the first time Late Ordovician volcanic events in northern Zhejiang province. The work represents a major contribution to research on Paleozoic strata in the Lower Yangtze region, and sheds new light on understanding the Hirnantian glacial event and biological extinction event in South China by providing a high-precision time scale. In addition, the book opens an important avenue for future research on sponge evolution after the Cambrian life explosion. As such, it offers a unique and valuable asset for researchers and graduate students alike.

Abstract

Chillag has showed that there is a single generalization showing that the sums of ordinary character tables, Brauer character, and projective indecomposable characters are positive integers. We show that Chillag's construction also applies to Isaacs' $\pi$-partial characters. We show that if an extra condition is assumed, then we can obtain upper and lower bounds on the Chillag's table sums. We will demonstrate that this condition holds for Brauer characters, $\pi$-partial characters, and projective indecomposable characters, and so we obtain upper and lower bounds for the table sums in those cases. 17. Variations in Quinolinic Acid Levels in Tuberculosis Patients with Diabetes Comorbidity: A Pilot Prospective Cohort Study.

Abstract

We aimed to investigate dysregulated metabolic pathways and identify diagnostic and therapeutic targets in patients with tuberculosis-diabetes (TB-DM). Methods: In our prospective cohort study, plasma samples were collected from healthy individuals, diabetic (DM) patients, untreated TB-only (TB-0)/TB-DM patients (TB-DM-0), and cured TB (TB-6)/TB-DM patients (TB-DM-6) to measure the levels of amino acids, fatty acids, and other metabolites in plasma using high-throughput targeted quantification methods. Results: Significantly different biological processes and biomarkers were identified in DM, TB-DM-0, and TB-DM-6 patients. Moreover, quinolinic acid (QA) showed excellent predictive accuracy for distinguishing between DM patients and TB-DM-0 patients, with an AUC of 1 (95% CI 1– 1). When differentiating between TB-DM-0 patients and TB-DM-6 patients, the AUC was 0.9297 (95% CI 0.8460– 1). Compared to those in DM patients, the QA levels were significantly elevated in TB-DM-0 patients and decreased significantly after antituberculosis treatment. We simultaneously compared healthy controls and untreated tuberculosis patients and detected an increase in the level of QA in the plasma of tuberculosis patients, which decreased following treatment. Conclusion: These findings improve the current understanding of tuberculosis treatment in patients with diabetes. Abstract

With the ongoing mutation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) leading to various variants, there is an urgent need for new diagnostic methods for SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. The existing nucleic acid test and antigen test suffer from long assay time and low sensitivity, respectively. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS)‐based nasal swabs analysis have been demonstrated as a promising technique in SARS‐CoV‐2 infection screening. However, the applicability of the technique in the different variants of SARS‐CoV‐2 is uncertain. Given the prevalence of the Omicron variant since 2022, we developed a MALDI‐TOF‐based diagnosis method with nasal swab samples to detect the infection by this variant. We collected 325 SARS‐CoV‐2‐positive and 221 SARS‐CoV‐2‐negative nasal swab samples, and the molecular mass fingerprints were acquired from the samples by MALDI‐TOF MS. Using a random forest machine learning classification model to analyze the molecular mass fingerprints MALDI‐TOF mass spectra, the accuracy of 97%, false negative rate of 0%, and false positive rate of 7.6% were achieved for the diagnosis of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Combining the MALDI‐TOF analysis with top‐down proteomics, we identified four potential protein biomarkers, that is, humanin‐like 4, thymosin beta‐10, thymosin beta‐4 and statherin, in the nasal swab for the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019. It was further found that the four protein biomarkers can also differentiate the SARS‐CoV‐2 original strains infection and Omicron strains infection. These results suggest that the MALDI‐TOF MS‐based nasal swab analysis holds effective diagnostic capabilities of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, and shows promising potential for global application and extension to other infectious diseases.
