Block copolymer electrolytes have been shown to increase the cycle life of rechargeable batteries that utilize high capacity lithium anodes. Most block copolymer electrolyte studies have been centered on polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (SEO) mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt and are limited to salt concentrations in the vicinity of r[Li]/[EO] = 0.1, where [Li] and [EO] are the concentration of lithium and ethylene oxide moieties, respectively, as the conductivity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) homopolymer electrolytes is maximized at this concentration. In this work, we study the morphology and conductivity of electrolytes derived from a high molecular weight SEO block copolymer over the wide LiTFSI concentration range of 0 ≤ r ≤ 0.550. For electrolytes with r ≥ 0.125, the crystallization of PEO-LiTFSI complexes with stoichiometric ratios of 6:1, 3:1, or 2:1 (EO:Li) is shown to correlate with morphology as determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM): some samples that are semicrystalline at room temperature exhibit regions of periodic lamellar ordering, whereas those that do not crystallize have aperiodic packed-ellipsoid morphologies. SAXS profiles below and above the melting temperatures of the crystals are identical, indicating that the crystals are confined within the block copolymer domains. The conductivities of SEO/LiTFSI mixtures with r = 0.275, r = 0.300, and r = 0.350 are within experimental error of PEO/LiTFSI at the same salt concentrations, in spite of the presence of insulating polystyrene (PS) domains in the SEO/LiTFSI samples. We attribute this to enhanced segmental dynamics of the PEO chains in the SEO electrolytes, based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements of glass transition temperatures. The dependence of ionic conductivity on salt concentration in the SEO/LiTFSI electrolytes at temperatures above the melting temperature of the crystalline complexes shows three local maxima that correlate with the formation of crystalline complexes when r ≥ 0.125. These maxima arise due to a combination of the enhanced segmental dynamics and changes in morphology observed by SAXS and STEM.

Perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) are commercially available non-flammable short chain polymeric liquids. End-functionalized PFPE chains solvate lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt and these mixtures can be used as electrolytes for lithium (Li) batteries. Here we synthesize and characterize a new class of solid PFPE electrolytes. The electrolytes are made by either thermal or UV crosslinking PFPE chains with urethane methacrylate end-groups. For the synthesis of thermally crosslinked electrolytes, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with organic acrylopropyl groups was used as crosslinker agent, while for UV cured electrolytes a photoinitiatior was used. We present thermal, morphological, and electrical data of the solid electrolytes. We compare these properties with those of the two parent liquids (PFPE with urethane methacrylate end-groups and POSS with acrylopropyl groups) mixed with LiTFSI. The solubility limit of LiTFSI in the PFPE-based solids is higher than that in the liquids. The conductivity data are analyzed using the Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher equation. The concentration of effective charge carriers is a strong function of the nature of the solvent (solid versus liquid) whereas the activation energy is neither a strong function of the nature of the solvent nor salt concentration.

Crystallization within block copolymers is a subject of considerable interest; however, little is understood about how the presence of an ion-containing block, such as poly[(styrene-4-sulfonyltrifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (P[(STFSI)]), influences the crystallization behavior of single-ion conducting block copolymers derived from poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly[(styrene-4-sulfonyltrifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (PEO-P[(STFSI)]). In this study, we report on the crystallization behavior of PEO in a matched-set library of lithiated (PEO-P[(STFSI)Li]) and magnesiated (PEO-P[(STFSI)2Mg]) single-ion conducting block copolymers that are disordered in the melt. Structural and thermal analysis of semicrystalline samples prepared by quenching amorphous melts reveals that total PEO crystallinity is independent of cation identity. Furthermore, crystallization induces the formation of lamellar nanostructures regardless of the counterion present. However, the quality of the PEO crystallites and concomitant nanostructures appears to be strongly influenced by counterion identity; magnesiated samples demonstrate more disorder at both the crystalline and nanostructural level. By monitoring PEO crystallization with in situ small and wide-angle X-ray scattering, we show that PEO crystallizes from a homogeneous melt within PEO-P[(STFSI)Li] but is hindered by the presence of disordered concentration fluctuations within the magnesiated samples. Thus, counterion identity influences PEO crystallization by controlling the miscibility of the polymer blocks within the crystallizing melt.

We report on the synthesis and characterization of a series of microphase-separated, single-ion-conducting block copolymer electrolytes. Salty nanoparticles comprising silsesquioxane cores with covalently bound polystyrenesulfonyllithium (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (PSLiTFSI) chains were synthesized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization. Hybrid electrolytes were obtained by mixing the salty nanoparticles into a microphase-separated polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (SEO) block copolymer. Miscibility of PSLiTFSI and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) results in localization of the nanoparticles in the PEO-rich microphase. The morphology of hybrid electrolytes was determined by scanning transmission electron microscopy. We explore the relationship between the morphology and ionic conductivity of the hybrid. The transference number of the electrolyte with the highest ionic conductivity was measured by dc polarization to confirm the single-ion-conducting character of the electrolyte. Discharge curves obtained from lithium metal-hybrid electrolyte-FePO4 batteries are compared to the data obtained from the batteries with a conventional block copolymer electrolyte.

A method is presented to relate local morphology and ionic conductivity in a solid, lamellar block copolymer electrolyte for lithium batteries, by simulating conductivity through transmission electron micrographs. The electrolyte consists of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide salt (SEO/LiTFSI), where the polystyrene phase is structural phase and the poly(ethylene oxide)/LiTFSI phase is ionically conductive. The electric potential distribution is simulated in binarized micrographs by solving the Laplace equation with constant potential boundary conditions. A morphology factor, f, is reported for each image by calculating the effective conductivity relative to a homogenous conductor. Images from two samples are examined, one annealed with large lamellar grains and one unannealed with small grains. The average value of f is 0.45 ± 0.04 for the annealed sample, and 0.37 ± 0.03 for the unannealed sample, both close to the value predicted by effective medium theory, 1/2. Simulated conductivities are compared to published experimental conductivities. The value of fUnannealed/fAnnealed is 0.82 for simulations and 6.2 for experiments. Simulation results correspond well to predictions by effective medium theory but do not explain the experimental measurements. Observation of nanoscale morphology over length scales greater than the size of the micrographs (∼1 μm) may be required to explain the experimental results. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. In lithium batteries, a porous separator filled with an electrolyte is placed in between the electrodes. Properties of the separator such as porosity and wettability strongly influence the conductivity of the electrolyte-separator composite. This study focuses on three commercial separators: a single layer polypropylene (Celgard 2500), a trilayer polypropylene-polyethylene-polypropylene (PP-PE-PP), and a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Electron microscopy was used to characterize the pore structure, and these experiments reveal large differences in pore morphology. The separators were soaked in both carbonate- and perfluoropolyether-based electrolytes. The conductivity of the neat electrolytes (σ0) varied from 6.46 × 10-6 to 1.76 × 10-2 S cm-1. The porosity and wettability of the separator affect the electrolyte uptake that in turn affect the conductivity of electrolyte-separator composites. The conductivity of the electrolyte-separator composites (σ) was found to follow a master equation, σ = 0.51·σ0·φc3.2±0.2, where φc is the volume fraction of the electrolyte in each separator.

We have measured the muon flux and production rate of muon-induced neutrons at a depth of 611 m water equivalent. Our apparatus comprises three layers of crossed plastic scintillator hodoscopes for tracking the incident cosmic-ray muons and 760 L of a gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator for producing and detecting neutrons. The vertical muon intensity was measured to be Iμ=(5.7±0.6)×10-6 cm-2 s-1 sr-1. The yield of muon-induced neutrons in the liquid scintillator was determined to be Yn=(1.19±0.08(stat)±0.21(syst))×10-4 neutrons/(μ·g·cm-2). A fit to the recently measured neutron yields at different depths gave a mean muon energy dependence of 0.76±0.03 for liquid-scintillator targets.

We explore the relationship between the morphology and ionic conductivity of block copolymer electrolytes over a wide range of salt concentrations for the system polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO, SEO) mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt (LiTFSI). Two SEO polymers were studied, SEO(16-16) and SEO(4.9-5.5), over the salt concentration range r = 0.03-0.55. The numbers x and y in SEO(x-y) are the molecular weights of the blocks in kg mol-1, and the r value is the molar ratio of salt to ethylene oxide moieties. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to characterize morphology and grain size at 120 °C, differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the crystallinity and the glass transition temperature of the PEO-rich microphase, and ac impedance spectroscopy was used to measure ionic conductivity as a function of temperature. The most surprising observation of our study is that ionic conductivity in the concentration regime 0.11 ≤ r ≤ 0.21 increases in SEO electrolytes but decreases in PEO electrolytes. The maximum in ionic conductivity with salt concentration occurs at about twice the salt concentration in SEO (r = 0.21) as in PEO (r = 0.11). We propose that these observations are due to the effect of salt concentration on the grain structure in SEO electrolytes.

The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of ν¯e oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world's most precise measurement of sin22θ13 and the effective mass splitting Δmee2. The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world's most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes, the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors' baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.

We demonstrate that the water uptake and conductivity of proton-conducting block copolymer electrolyte membranes can be controlled systematically by the introduction of pores in the conducting domains. We start with a membrane comprising a mixture of homopolymer polystyrene (hPS) and a polystyrene-b-polyethylene-b-polystyrene (SES) copolymer. Rinsing the membranes in tetrahydrofuran and methanol results in the dissolution of hPS, leaving behind a porous membrane. The polystyrene domains in the porous SES membranes are then sulfonated to give a porous membrane with hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. The porosity is controlled by controlling Φv, the volume fraction of hPS in the blended membrane. The morphology of the membranes before and after sulfonation was studied by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), electron tomography, and resonance soft X-ray scattering (RSoXS). The porous structures before and after sulfonation are qualitatively different. Water uptake of the sulfonated membranes increased with increasing Φv. Proton conductivity is a nonmonotonic function of Φv with a maximum at Φv = 0.1. The introduction of microscopic pores in the conducting domain provides an additional handle for tuning water uptake and ion transport in proton-conducting membranes. (Graph Presented).

We address two major challenges facing commercialization of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation: product inhibition and low productivity. We studied a polystyrene-b-polydimethylsiloxane-b-polystyrene (SDS) triblock copolymer membrane for selective removal of butanol from aqueous solutions by pervaporation. The SDS membrane exhibited higher permeabilities than a commercially available cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane. Both types of pervaporation membrane were also used for in situ product removal of ABE biofuels in Clostridium acetobutylicum fermentations operated in a semi-continuous mode. Membrane performance and its effect on the fermentation process were assessed by measuring flux, OD600 and concentrations of different components in the fermenter as a function of time. Volumetric ABE productivity increased from 0.45g/(Lh) in simple batch fermentation to 0.66g/(Lh) in the case of pervaporative-fermentation with the PDMS membrane. A further increase in productivity to 0.94g/(Lh) was obtained in the case of pervaporative-fermentation with the SDS membrane. Overall, total ABE production improved by a factor of three, viable fermentation time increased by a factor of two, and cell density increased by a factor of 2.5 upon applying SDS membrane pervaporation, relative to the batch process.

The Daya Bay experiment consists of functionally identical antineutrino detectors immersed in pools of ultrapure water in three well-separated underground experimental halls near two nuclear reactor complexes. These pools serve both as shields against natural, low-energy radiation, and as water Cherenkov detectors that efficiently detect cosmic muons using arrays of photomultiplier tubes. Each pool is covered by a plane of resistive plate chambers as an additional means of detecting muons. Design, construction, operation, and performance of these muon detectors are described.

Hybrid nanostructured materials comprising block copolymers, nanoparticles, and lithium salts have the potential to serve as electrolytes in non- flammable rechargeable lithium batteries. Here we show that the addition of functionalized nanoparticles, at an optimized concentration, into lamellar block copolymer electrolytes, results in an increase in ionic conductivity. This is due to the occurrence of a lamellar-to-bicontinuous phase transition, driven by the addition of nanoparticles. The magnitude of the increase in conductivity is consistent with a simple model that accounts for the morphology of the conducting channels. The conductivity of the optimized hybrid electrolyte is only 6% lower than that of an idealized nanostructured electrolyte with perfectly connected conducting pathways and no dead ends. Poly[(styrene)-block-((2-acryloxy)ethyltributylphosphonium bromide)] diblock copolymers (STBP) were synthesized in two steps. First, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization was used to synthesize the diblock copolymer precursors poly[(styrene)-block-(bromoethyl acrylate)] (SBEA), followed by functionalization with tributylphosphine. Copolymers with overall molecular weights ranging from 31 to 87 kg/mol were synthesized. The volume fraction of the ion-containing monomers in the copolymers was fixed at about 0.57. Self-assembly of these copolymers into ordered morphologies with tunable domain sizes was demonstrated by small-angle X-ray scattering. The effect of morphology on water uptake and bromide ion conductivity was explored in samples equilibrated in liquid water. The use of the pendant tributylphosphonium cations, which have some hydrophobic character, results in low water uptake and high anionic conductivity. The conductivity increases with increasing domain size while water uptake is unaffected by domain size.

A systematic study of the dependence of ionic conductivity on the grain size of a lamellar block copolymer electrolyte was performed. A freeze-dried mixture of poly(styrene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) and lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide salt was heated in steps from 29 to 116 °C and then cooled back to 29 °C with an annealing time ranging from 30 to 60 min at each temperature. Grain structure and ionic conductivity during these steps were quantified by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering and ac impedance spectroscopy, respectively. Conductivity depends both on grain structure and temperature. A normalization scheme to decouple the dependence of conductivity on temperature and grain structure is described. Ionic conductivity at a given temperature was found to decrease by a factor of 5.2 ± 0.9 as the SAXS measure of grain size increased from 13 to 88 nm. The fact that in the system studied, large, well-formed lamellar grains are less conducting than poorly defined, small grains suggests a new approach for optimizing the transport properties of block copolymer electrolytes. A significant limitation of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries arises because most of the ionic current is carried by the anion, the ion that does not participate in energy-producing reactions. Single-ion-conducting block copolymer electrolytes, wherein all of the current is carried by the lithium cations, have the potential to dramatically improve battery performance. The relationship between ionic conductivity and morphology of single-ion-conducting poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrenesulfonyllithium(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (PEO-PSLiTFSI) diblock copolymers was studied by small-angle X-ray scattering and ac impedance spectroscopy. At low temperatures, an ordered lamellar phase is obtained, and the "mobile" lithium ions are trapped in the form of ionic clusters in the glassy polystyrene-rich microphase. An increase in temperature results in a thermodynamic transition to a disordered phase. Above this transition temperature, the lithium ions are released from the clusters, and ionic conductivity increases by several orders of magnitude. This morphology-conductivity relationship is very different from all previously published data on published electrolytes. The ability to design electrolytes wherein most of the current is carried by the lithium ions, to sequester them in nonconducting domains and release them when necessary, has the potential to enable new strategies for controlling the charge-discharge characteristics of rechargeable lithium batteries. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos (ν¯(e)) from six 2.9  GW(th) reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41 589 (203 809 and 92 912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude sin(2)2θ(13)=0.090(-0.009)(+0.008) and the first direct measurement of the ν¯(e) mass-squared difference |Δm(ee)2|=(2.59(-0.20)(+0.19))×10(-3)  eV2 is obtained using the observed ν¯(e) rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of |Δm(ee)2| is consistent with |Δm(μμ)2| measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment was designed to achieve a sensitivity on the value of sin22θ13 to better than 0.01 at 90% CL. The experiment consists of eight antineutrino detectors installed underground at different baselines from six nuclear reactors. With data collected with six antineutrino detectors for 55 days, Daya Bay announced the discovery of a non-zero value for sin22θ13 with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations in March 2012. The most recent analysis with 139 days of data acquired in a six-detector configuration yields sin22θ13=0.089±0.010(stat.)±0.005(syst.), which is the most precise measurement of sin22θ13 to date. © 2013.

The Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to make a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ13, and recently made the definitive discovery of its non-zero value. It utilizes a set of eight, functionally identical antineutrino detectors to measure the reactor flux and spectrum at baselines of ∼ 300-2000 m from the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plants. The Daya Bay antineutrino detectors were built in an above-ground facility and deployed side-by-side at three underground experimental sites near and far from the nuclear reactors. This configuration allows the experiment to make a precision measurement of reactor antineutrino disappearance over km-long baselines and reduces relative systematic uncertainties between detectors and nuclear reactors. We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ13 from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for sin22θ13 with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GW th were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is 0.944±0.007(stat.)±0.003(syst.). Previous investigations have shown that curcumin is used for the treatment of inflammatory conditions and cancer, suggesting that curcumin may prevent RP and sensitize cancer cells to irradiation. However, the clinical advancement of curcumin is limited by its poor water solubility and low bioavailability after oral administration. Here, a water-soluble liposomal curcumin system was developed to investigate its prevention and sensitizing effects by an intravenous administration manner in mice models. The results showed that liposomal curcumin inhibited nuclear factor-κB pathway and downregulated inflammatory factors including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and transforming growth factor-β induced by thoracic irradiation. Furthermore, the combined treatment with liposomal curcumin and radiotherapy increased intratumoral apoptosis and microvessel responses to irradiation in vivo. The significantly enhanced inhibition of tumor growth also was observed in a murine lung carcinoma (LL/2) model. There were no obvious toxicities observed in mice. The current results indicate that liposomal curcumin can effectively mitigate RP, reduce the fibrosis of lung, and sensitize LL/2 cells to irradiation. This study also suggests that the systemic administration of liposomal curcumin is safe and deserves to be investigated for further clinical application.Keywords: liposomes, curcumin, lung cancer

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers. Survivin is strongly immunogenic in a fraction of colorectal cancer patients. The present study was designed to determine whether full-length mouse Survivin dominant-negative mutant SurvivinT34A has the antitumor activity in a murine colon carcinoma model. The complex of cationic liposome (DOTAP/Chol) to plasmid pORF9-mSurvivin T34A was administered intravenously in a mouse subcutaneous (S. C.) CT 26 tumor model. Apoptotic cells and anti-angiogenesis were evaluated by fluorescent in situ TUNEL assay and by immunohistochemistry with an antibody reactive to CD31, respectively. A 4 h 51Cr release assay was performed to determine Survivin-specific cytotoxicity. The adoptive transfer of CD8+ or CD4+ T-lymphocytes assay was to further explore the roles of immune cell subsets. We demonstrated the complex of cationic liposome (DOTAP/Chol) to plasmid pORF9--mSurvivin T34A when administered intravenously induced an efficient antitumor activity in a S. C. CT26 tumor model in mice. The main mechanism is involved in three aspects: triggering the apoptosis of tumor cells, inhibiting angiogenesis, and inducing Survivin-specific immune response. Our observations may have potential implications for the further exploration of the treatment of human colorectal cancer by intravenous delivery of dominant-negative mutant Survivin T34A. It is well established that the presence of soluble amyloid-beta protein (Abeta) correlates with the severity of dementia in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several lines of evidence indicate that cyclic AMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) and protein kinase A (PKA) are involved in soluble Abeta-trigged disruption of synaptic plasticity in early AD. Previously we demonstrated the beneficial effects of ginsenoside Rg1 on Abeta-induced neuronal insult. Therefore, in the present study, we examined the effects of long-term consumption of Rg1 on the cerebral Abeta content and PKA/CREB signaling molecules, as well as cognitive performance in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8). Notably, a significant dose-dependent reduction of soluble Abeta(1-40) was shown in the hippocampus of SAMP8 mice after administration with ginsenoside Rg1 for 3 months. Furthermore, Rg1 treatment resulted in a significant decrease of hippocampal PKA RIIalpha level (isoform IIalpha of the regulatory subunit of PKA). In contrast, phospho-CREB and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels were dramatically increased in the hippocampus of SAMP8 treated with Rg1. Additionally, administration of ginsenoside Rg1 consequently improved learning and memory outcomes in SAMP8 mice. These data suggest that long-term consumption of ginsenoside Rg1 may delay cognitive decline, associated with significant effects on Abeta generation, PKA/CREB activity, as well as BDNF content in the brain. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of halitosis in the Chinese population and to assess the relationships between halitosis and oral health, social and behavioural factors. METHODS: The correlation between the incidence of oral malodor and oral health was surveyed in a sample of 2000 individuals (1000 males and 1000 females) aged 15-64 years residing in urban and rural areas. Malodor was measured with both organoleptic measurements and with a portable sulphide monitor. Assessment of oral health included decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT), periodontal status, dental plaque, and tongue coating. Behavioural and social factors related with oral health or halitosis were also investigated. RESULTS: The prevalence of halitosis was 27.5% according to the organoleptic score. The level of volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) in mouth air was significantly lower in males and in some of the age groups after lunch. Age and location of residence (rural or urban areas) did not influence the VSCs concentration in mouth air. The amount of tongue coating played the most important role in increasing VSCs concentration in mouth air, followed by periodontal status and plaque index values. DMFT, social, and behavioural factors did not contribute to halitosis. Bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) are important for development, tissue cell replenishment, and wound healing in physiological and pathological conditions. BMSCs were found to preferably reach sites undergoing the process of cell proliferation, such as wound and tumor, suggesting that BMSCs may be used as a vehicle for gene therapy of tumor.~Background~Background~Mouse BMSCs were loaded with recombinant adenoviruses which express soluble Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor-1 (sFlt-1). The anti-angiogenesis of sFlt-1 in BMSCs was determined using endothelial cells proliferation inhibition assay and alginate encapsulation assay. The anti-tumor effects of BMSCs expressing sFlt-1 through tail-vein infusion were evaluated in two mouse tumor metastases models.~Methods~Methods~BMSCs genetically modified with Adv-GFP-sFlt-1 could effectively express and secret sFlt-1. The knowledge that zinc is essential for growth and neuropsychologic performance and a report of zinc-responsive stunting in Chinese children prompted this project. This article summarizes findings from a 10-wk, double-blind, controlled trial of zinc repletion in 740 urban, 6-9-y-old first graders from low-income families in Chongqing, Qingdao, and Shanghai, People's Republic of China. Treatments were 20 mg Zn alone (Z), 20 mg Zn with micronutrients (ZM), and micronutrients alone (M). The M mixture was based on National Research Council guidelines. Nutrients that might interfere with zinc retention were excluded or given in lower amounts. Main outcomes were changes in neuropsychologic performance and knee height. Hemoglobin, serum ferritin, plasma and hair zinc, and whole blood and hair lead were also measured. Anemia was not common, and serum ferritin concentrations were usually within the range of normal. Mean baseline plasma zinc concentrations were marginal in children from Chongqing and Qingdao and normal in children from Shanghai. After treatment with ZM or M plasma zinc increased. Hair zinc tended to decrease after all treatments. Mean baseline whole blood lead concentrations were slightly below the limit considered excessive for children by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Neuropsychologic performance and growth were most improved after treatment with ZM. These findings were consistent with the presence of zinc and other micronutrient deficiencies. The residual water and amphiphilic compounds such as phospholipids in bulk oil can form reverse micelles, which affect oxidative stability. In this study, the Antarctic krill oil (AKO) samples with different water contents were subjected to accelerated storage. During storage, AKO exhibited oxidative changes, manifested as increased POV, TBARS values, and volatile compound levels but decreased PUFA percentages. Meanwhile, AKO underwent hydrolysis, evidenced by decreased PC, PE, and TG contents but increased FFA contents. Moreover, the degree of lipid oxidation and hydrolysis is dose-dependent with water added. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy imaging and micelle size distribution measurement proved the presence of reverse micelle, and their size and interfacial area improved with increased water contents. Correlation analysis suggested that lipid oxidation and hydrolysis positively correlated with the size and interfacial area of reverse micelle. C-terminal kinesin motor KIFC1 is increasingly concerned with an essential role in germ cell development. During the spermatogenesis of mice, rats, and crustaceans, KIFC1 functions in regulating meiotic chromosome separation, acrosome vesicle transportation, and nuclear morphology maintenance. The expression pattern of KIFC1 is conservatively concentrated at the acrosome and nucleus of haploid sperm cells. However, whether KIFC1 has similar functions in non-human primates remains unknown. In this study, we constructed the testis-specific cDNA library and cloned different transcripts of KIFC1 based on the genomic sequence. New variants of KIFC1 were identified, and showed different functional domains from the predicted isoforms. The spatio-temporal expression of KIFC1 proteins in seminiferous tubules of rhesus monkeys showed an obvious nuclear localization, specifically expressed in the spermatocytes and early haploid spermatids. The transcripts of KIFC1 also exhibited considerable expression in the nucleus of rhesus LLC-MK2 cells. Besides, we demonstrated that KIFC1 located at the acrosome and microtubule flagella of the mature sperm, and KIFC1 inhibition resulted in sperm tail deformation as well as increased the instability of head-to-tail connection. To explore the effects of the components in the raw materials and by-products of co-pyrolysis on the physicochemical properties of biochar, rice husk （RH, which has a high percentage of lignin and a low content of N） and sawdust （SD, which has a high percentage of both cellulose and N） were used as typical raw materials to prepare co-pyrolysis biochar. The benzene vapor adsorption performance of the obtained biochar was then tested on a fixed-bed device. At the same time, the by-product components generated during pyrolysis were analyzed using thermogravimetric （TG）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. Several characteristic methods such as X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR）, and Raman spectroscopy were used for the structural analysis of biochar. The effect mechanism of the by-products of co-pyrolysis on the structure of biochar and the adsorption efficiency of biochar for benzene vapor was discussed. The results showed that the crystal structures of the prepared samples were not significantly different. The specific surface area of SD with a high cellulose content was 1.6 times higher than that of RH with a high lignin content after pyrolysis. The oleic acid in the raw material had a synergistic effect with the intermediate product, ammonia, from the decomposition of N-containing amino acids during co-pyrolysis. The by-product oleic amide was generated and aggregated to block the pores. The specific surface areas of RC 1 was 134.28 m 2 ·g -1 . The benzene vapor adsorption capacity of co-pyrolysis biochar （RC n ） was worse than that of pyrolysis biochar （RC and SC） and mixing pyrolysis biochar （RC- m SC）. Furthermore, the generation of oleic acid amides decreased with an increase in the amount of sawdust during pyrolysis. Thus, the adsorption capacity and specific surface area of RC 4 increased to 238.78 mg·g -1 and 367.37 m 2 ·g -1 , respectively. The fitting k value from the Yoon Nelson kinetic equation of RC n was 0.060-0.084 min -1 , which was higher than the value of 0.039 min -1 of SC. Thus, the co-pyrolysis improved the adsorption rate. In summary, the by-products of co-pyrolysis had an inhibitory effect on the benzene vapor adsorption capacity of the biochar. As the sawdust ratio increased, the inhibitory effect decreased. Furthermore, the adsorption process was fitted to a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, which mainly consisted of physical adsorption. The regeneration efficiency of RC 3 exceeded 85% after five cycles, indicating its potential for industrial applications. The results revealed the key factor in the benzene adsorption performance of co-pyrolysis biochar from the composition of raw materials and by-products and provided a reference for the reduction, resource utilization, and harmless utilization of biomass.

Background and Study Aims: Hirschsprung disease (HD) is a complex developmental disease that resulted from impaired proliferation and migration of neural crest cells. Despite the genetic causation of enteric nervous system have been found to be responsible for part of HD cases, the genetic aetiology of most HD patients still needs to be explored., Patients and Methods: Whole-genome sequencing and subsequent Sanger sequencing validation analysis were performed in 13 HD children and their unaffected parents. Autophagy assays were performed to validate the functions of the identified locus., Results: After the initial quality checking (SNP quality score ≥ 40, coverage ≥ 10X) of the raw data, we identified 3182 single nucleotide variants (SNVs). We subsequently compared these SNVs against the public databases and got a total of 15 suspicious genes shared among these patients. Subsequent Sanger sequencing and bioinformatics analyses revealed that amino acid-altering de novo mutation c.1648C > T(p.L550F) in ALK was responsible for HD. For validation, we sequenced all 29 exons ofALKin 76 additional sporadic HD cases and 200 healthy children and identified this variant in five of the HD cases. Objective: Electroacupuncture has been shown to play a neuroprotective role following ischemic stroke, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Ferroptosis has been shown to play a key role in the injury process. In the present study, we wanted to explore whether electroacupuncture could inhibit ferroptosis by promoting nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) nuclear translocation., Methods: The ischemic stroke model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) in adult rats. These rats have been randomly divided into the EA + MCAO/R group, the MCAO/R group, the EA + MCAO/R + Brusatol group (the inhibitor of Nrf2), and the EA + MCAO/R + DMSO group, and the Sham group. The EA + MCAO/R group, EA + MCAO/R + Brusatol group, and the EA + MCAO/R + DMSO group received EA intervention 24 h after modeling for 7 consecutive days. The behavioral function was evaluated by Neurologic severity score (NSS), Garcia score, Foot-fault Test, and Rotarod Test. The infarct volume was detected by TTC staining, and the neuronal damage was observed by Nissl staining. The levels of Fe 2+ , reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured by ELISA. The immunofluorescence and Western blotting were used to detect the expression of Total Nrf2, p-Nrf2, Nuclear Nrf2, and Cytoplasmic Nrf2, and the essential ferroptosis proteins, including glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11) and ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1). The mitochondria were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM)., Results: Electroacupuncture improved neurological deficits in rats model of MCAO/R, decreased the brain infarct volume, alleviated neuronal damage, inhibited the Fe 2+ , ROS, and MDA accumulation, increased SOD levels, increased the expression of GPX4, SLC7A11 and FTH1, and rescued injured mitochondria. Especially, we found that the electroacupuncture up-regulated the expression of Nrf2, and promoted phosphorylation of Nrf2 and nuclear translocation, However, Nrf2 inhibitor Brusatol reversed the neuroprotective effect of electroacupuncture., Conclusion: Electroacupuncture can alleviate cerebral I/R injury-induced ferroptosis by promoting Nrf2 nuclear translocation. Objective: Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of respiratory cytology specimens is a critical technique for accurate and timely diagnosis of lung cancer. However, in China, limited familiarity with the Diff-Quik staining method and a shortage of trained cytopathologists hamper utilization of ROSE. Therefore, developing an improved deep learning model to assist clinicians in promptly and accurately evaluating Diff-Quik stained cytology samples during ROSE has important clinical value., Methods: Retrospectively, 116 digital images of Diff-Quik stained cytology samples were obtained from whole slide scans. These included 6 diagnostic categories - carcinoid, normal cells, adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, non-small cell carcinoma, and small cell carcinoma. All malignant diagnoses were confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The test image set was presented to 3 cytopathologists from different hospitals with varying levels of experience, as well as an artificial intelligence system, as single-choice questions., Results: The diagnostic accuracy of the cytopathologists correlated with their years of practice and hospital setting. The AI model demonstrated proficiency comparable to the humans. Importantly, all combinations of AI assistance and human cytopathologist increased diagnostic efficiency to varying degrees., Conclusions: This deep learning model shows promising capability as an aid for on-site diagnosis of respiratory cytology samples. Remineralization is a common strategy for the repair of early demineralized tooth enamels, but the harsh dynamic oral environment often hampers its efficacy. Rapid remineralization is expected to address this challenge, however, the stabilizers of remineralization materials often resist their transformation required for repair. Here, by dissolving the ions of calcium and phosphate in glycerol-dominant solvents, we obtain the calcium phosphate clusters (1-2 nm), which are stabilized by glycerol (with high viscosity and affinity to clusters), but can perform a fast enamel repair via the water-triggered transformation in both static and dynamic environments. Upon the in vitro and in vivo (female Sprague-Dawley rats) studies, the clusters swiftly enter the nano-/micro-sized enamel defect sites, then form a compact hydroxyapatite repair layer within a short time (30 min, much faster than the conventional materials), and significantly recovers mechanical properties. Purpose: To investigate the protective effect and mechanism of enhanced expression of endogenous macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) on cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury., Methods: A recombinant double-stranded adeno-associated virus serotype 9 with MIF or green fluorescent protein (GFP) genes (dsAAV9-MIF/GFP) was transduced into mice and neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs). The models of cardiac 60 min ischemia and 24 h reperfusion and 12 h hypoxia/12 h reoxygenation (H/R) were established in mice and NRVMs, respectively. Infarct size, cardiac remodeling, and related signaling pathways were assessed., Results: The dsAAV9 vector demonstrated strong transduction efficacy and cardiac affinity. Cardiac overexpression of MIF led to a 35.3% reduction in infarct size and improved cardiac function following I/R injury. In the dsAAV9-MIF group, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway was activated, and autophagy was enhanced during the ischemic period. During reperfusion, the extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) signaling pathway was upregulated, leading to reduced cardiac apoptosis. In vitro, transfection with MIF in NRVMs also upregulated AMPK and ERK1/2 signaling during hypoxia and reoxygenation, respectively. Furthermore, MIF overexpression significantly improved autophagy and mitochondrial function, evidenced by an increased LC3-II/I ratio and enhanced mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), with these effects reversed by the AMPK inhibitor compound C. Additionally, MIF overexpression led to a 60% reduction in the apoptosis rate of cardiomyocytes subjected to H/R and decreased the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, partially through the ERK1/2 signaling pathway., Conclusion: Enhanced endogenous MIF expression via the dsAAV9 vector provides significant cardioprotection against I/R injury by activating the AMPK and ERK1/2 signaling pathways. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the application of online multi-internal standard calibration (M.ISC) in determining iodine concentrations through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Notably, M.ISC streamlines the calibration process by requiring only a single standard solution, thereby enhancing sample throughput and minimizing liquid waste. In addition, unlike conventional internal standard (IS) methods, M.ISC omits the need for time-consuming species identification by utilizing multiple IS species simultaneously to minimize signal biases. The effectiveness of M.ISC was validated through the analysis of six standard reference samples, with the results of LOD and LOQ also being calculated by the error propagation approach. The traditional chemical analytical methods (TCAM), external standard calibration (EC) and single IS methods were also evaluated as comparative purpose. Background: The invasion of viruses and fungi can cause pathological changes in the normal growth of plants and is an important factor in causing plant infectious diseases. These pathogenic microorganisms can also secrete toxic metabolites, affecting crop quality and posing a threat to human health. In this work, we selected the natural product rutaecarpine as the lead compound to achieve the total synthesis and structural derivation. The antiphytoviral activities of these compounds were systematically studied using tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as the tested strain, and the structure-activity relationships were summarized., Result: The anti TMV activities of compounds 5a, 5n, 6b, and 7c are significantly higher than that of commercial antiviral agent ningnanmycin. We chose 5n for further antiviral mechanism research, and the results showed that it can directly act on viral particles. The molecular docking results further confirmed the interaction of compound 5n and coat protein (CP). These compounds also exhibited broad-spectrum fungicidal activities against eight plant pathogens. Especially compounds 5j and 5p have significant anti-fungal activities (EC 50 : 5j, 1.76 μg mL -1 ; 5p, 1.59 μg mL -1 ) and can be further studied as leads for plant-based anti-fungal agents., Conclusion: The natural product rutaecarpine and its derivatives were synthesized, and evaluated for their anti-TMV and fungicidal activities. Background: It remains unknown whether the tumor stage at initial diagnosis and adjuvant treatments had any impacts on the long-term survival outcomes of patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) achieving pathologic complete response (pCR) following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT)., Methods: Clinical stage II-III patients with TNBC who achieved pCR after NACT were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program (SEER cohort) and the National Clinical Research Center for Cancer (Tianjin) in China (TMUCIH cohort). Survival analyses were conducted based on tumor stages and the types of adjuvant treatment received by the patients. The outcomes of interest were overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS)., Results: The TMUCIH cohort comprised 178 patients with a median follow-up of 55.5 months. Two and 3 patients experienced BCSS and OS events, respectively. The SEER cohort included 1218 patients with a median follow-up of 65.5 months, where 53 and 78 patients experienced BCSS and OS events, respectively. Patients diagnosed with stage III disease had significantly higher hazards of death compared to stage II disease (OS: hazard ratio [HR], 3.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.84-6.07; P < .001; BCSS: HR, 2.86; 95% CI, 1.38-5.92; P < .001). Adjuvant systemic and radiation therapy did not confer additional benefits to OS and BCSS., Conclusion: Tumor stage at initial diagnosis remains an independent predictor of long-term survival outcomes in patients with TNBC achieving pCR after NACT. To investigate differences in the clinical features of patients with sporotrichosis and cutaneous Mycobacterium marinum infection, and develop a prediction model for the initial identification. A total of 121 patients were selected based on the results from etiological culture. Logistic regression analyses were employed to identify the most valuable variables. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the following were finally considered independent predictors (OR = 3.650∼14.024, P<0.05) of cutaneous M. marinum infection: age<60 years (P = 0.031); female (P = 0.001); only the extremities involved (P = 0.031); clear triggers (P = 0.022); and presence of swelling (P = 0.024). A nomogram was developed based on these factors, and the area under the curve was 0.860. The model presented is based on clinical features and can help identify patients with sporotrichosis and cutaneous M. marinum infection. Background: A previous phase 2 trial showed promising outcomes for patients with HER2-positive early-stage breast cancer using neoadjuvant de-escalation chemotherapy with paclitaxel, trastuzumab, and pertuzumab. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of weekly nab-paclitaxel compared with the standard regimen of docetaxel plus carboplatin, both with trastuzumab and pertuzumab, as neoadjuvant therapies for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer., Methods: HELEN-006 was a multicentre, randomised, phase 3 trial done at six hospitals in China. We enrolled patients aged 18-70 years with untreated, histologically confirmed stage II-III invasive HER2-positive breast cancer and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1. Using an interactive response system, patients were randomly assigned (1:1) under a permuted block randomisation scheme (block size of four), stratified by tumour stage, nodal status, and hormone receptor status. Patients received either intravenous nab-paclitaxel (125 mg/m 2 on days 1, 8, and 15) for six 3-week cycles, or intravenous docetaxel (75 mg/m 2 on day 1) plus intravenous carboplatin (area under the concentration-time curve 6 mg/mL per min on day 1) for six 3-week cycles. Both groups also received concurrent intravenous trastuzumab, with an initial loading dose of 8 mg/kg and a maintenance dose of 6 mg/kg on day 1, as well as intravenous pertuzumab with a loading dose of 840 mg and a maintenance dose of 420 mg on day 1. This report is the final analysis of the primary endpoint, pathological complete response (ypT0/is ypN0), analysed in all patients who started treatment (modified intention to treat). The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04547907, and follow-up of the adjuvant phase is ongoing., Findings: Between Sept 20, 2020, and March 1, 2023, 789 patients were screened for eligibility, 689 of whom were randomly assigned (343 to the nab-paclitaxel group and 346 to the docetaxel plus carboplatin group). All 689 patients were Asian women. 669 patients received at least one dose of the study treatment and were included in the full analysis set (332 in the nab-paclitaxel group and 337 in the docetaxel plus carboplatin group). Median age of the patients was 50 years (IQR 43-55). Median follow-up time was 26 months (IQR 19-32). 220 (66·3% [95% CI 61·2-71·4]) patients in the nab-paclitaxel group had a pathological complete response, compared with 194 (57·6% [52·3-62·9]) in the docetaxel plus carboplatin group (combined odds ratio 1·54 [95% CI 1·10-2·14]; stratified p=0·011). 100 (30%) patients in the nab-paclitaxel group and 128 (38%) in the docetaxel plus carboplatin group had grade 3-4 adverse events. The most common grade 3-4 adverse events were nausea (22 [7%] in the nab-paclitaxel group vs 76 [23%] in the docetaxel plus carboplatin group), diarrhoea (25 [8%] vs 55 [16%]), and neuropathy (43 [13%] vs eight [2%]). Serious drug-related adverse events were reported in three (1%) patients in the nab-paclitaxel group and five (2%) in the docetaxel plus carboplatin group. Neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery is a common clinical strategy for operable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and the mainstream neoadjuvant therapies include chemoimmunotherapy, targeted therapy, and chemotherapy. However, there is a lack of studies to report the difference in benefits between these treatment modalities in the same institution. Therefore, this study aimed to depict the short-term efficacy of radiology and pathology achieved by different therapies and their impact on long-term survival as well as the underlying clinical significance. A total of 243 NSCLC patients who underwent different neoadjuvant therapies were eligible for inclusion. Demographic, radiological, and pathological features of patients were recorded. The event-free survival (EFS) outcome was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. The objective response rates (ORR) of primary tumor in the chemoimmunotherapy, targeted therapy, and chemotherapy cohorts were 48.95 %, 57.58 %, and 34.09 % respectively, major pathological response (MPR) rates were 58.74 %, 15.15 %, and 20.83 % (P<.0001), and pathological complete response (pCR) rates were 41.26 %, 0 %, and 11.11 % (P<.0001). For consistency between imaging and pathological evaluation, Cohen's Kappa were 0.275, 0.233, and 0.330. The EFS of MPR group was significantly longer than that of non-MPR group in the chemoimmunotherapy and chemotherapy cohorts (P=.0077**&.0343*, HR=0.3287&0.3715), but this improvement was not observed in the targeted therapy cohort. Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy often underestimates pathological efficacy in imaging but shows consistent long-term outcomes. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy with moderate overall effectiveness has a significant correlation between short-term benefits and reduced recurrence.
