Disorder, which is ubiquitous in nature, has been extensively explored in photonics for understanding the fundamental principles of light diffusion and localization, as well as for applications in functional resonators and random lasers. Recently, the investigation of disorder in topological photonics has led to the realization of topological Anderson insulators characterized by an unexpected disorder-induced phase transition. However, the observed photonic topological Anderson insulators so far are limited to the time-reversal symmetry breaking systems. Here, we propose and realize a photonic quantum spin Hall topological Anderson insulator without breaking time-reversal symmetry. The disorder-induced topological phase transition is comprehensively confirmed through the theoretical effective Dirac Hamiltonian, numerical analysis of bulk transmission, and experimental examination of bulk and edge transmissions. We present the convincing evidence for the unidirectional propagation and robust transport of helical edge modes, which are the key features of nontrivial time-reversal invariant topological Anderson insulators. Furthermore, we demonstrate disorder-induced beam steering, highlighting the potential of disorder as a new degree of freedom to manipulate light propagation in magnetic-free systems. Our work not only paves the way for observing unique topological photonic phases but also suggests potential device applications through the utilization of disorder.

The introduction of synthetic dimensions in topological photonic systems enriches the exploration of topological phase of light in higher-dimensional space beyond three-dimensional real-space. Recently, the gapless corner modes of topological photonic crystals under translational deformation have been proposed, but their experimental observation is still absent. Here, we observe the gapless corner modes in a photonic crystal slab under translational deformation. The corner mode exhibits a frequency dependence that can be tuned through the translation of the slab. Importantly, we find that the existence of gapless corner modes is independent of the specific corner configuration. The gapless corner modes are experimentally imaged via the near-field scanning measurement, and validated numerically by full-wave simulations. Our work contributes to the advancement of topological photonics and provides valuable insights into the exploration of gapless corner modes in synthetic dimensions.

In a periodic system with parity-time (PT) symmetry, spontaneous breaking of PT symmetry occurs when non-Hermiticity exceeds a critical value, thereby dividing the Bloch bands into PT-exact phase and PT-broken phase in two momentum regimes.From another perspective, PT-broken momentum regime can be deemed as a momentum gap if we consider Bloch k as eigenvalue of the problem instead.The topological aspects of such a type of momentum gap (PT-broken regime) remain unexplored. Here, we study the topological properties of momentum bandgap in one-dimensional (1D) PT-symmetric photonic crystals (PCs).k*p analysis shows that reversing the system's non-Hermiticity would lead to a topological phase transition, which is manifested as a local geometric phase along the momentum band.As a consequence of such geometric phase, a temporal boundary state (TBS) exists in the middle of momentum gap. Its robustness against perturbations and disorders is numerically verified by temporal simulations.

In non-Hermitian systems, the defective band degeneracies, so-called exceptional points (EPs), can form robust exceptional lines (ELs) in 3D momentum space in the absence of any symmetries. Here, we show that a natural orientation can be assigned to every EL according to the eigenenergy braiding around it, and prove the source-free principle of ELs as a corollary of the generalized Fermion doubling theorem for EPs on an arbitrary closed oriented surface, which indicates that if several ELs flow into a junction, the same number of outflow ELs from the junction must exist. Based on this principle, we discover three different mechanisms that can stabilize the junction of ELs and therefore guarantee the formation of various types of exceptional chains (ECs) under the protection of mirror, mirror-adjoint, or ${C}_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetries. Furthermore, we analyze the thresholdless perturbations to a Hermitian nodal line and map out all possible EC configurations that can be evolved. By strategically designing the structure and materials, we further exhibit that these exotic ECs can be readily observed in non-Hermitian photonic crystals. Topological states, first known as quantum Hall effect or Chern insulating crystal, have been generalized to many classical wave systems where potential applications such as robust waveguiding, quantum computing and high-performance lasers are expected. However, a crystal can be either topologically trivial or nontrivial, depending on its detailed configuration, and one needs to carefully design the structure and calculate its topological invariant before the actual applications. Here, we theoretically study and experimentally demonstrate the second Chern crystal in a four-dimensional space by introducing two extra synthetic translation dimensions. Due to the inherently nontrivial topology of the synthetic translation space, this abstract four-dimensional crystal is guaranteed to be topologically nontrivial regardless of the detailed configuration. The dimensional hierarchy of gapless boundary modes can be deduced by dimension reduction. Remarkably, one-dimensional gapless dislocation modes are observed and their robustness is confirmed in our experiments. Three-dimensional (3D) artificial metacrystals host rich topological phases, such as Weyl points, nodal rings and 3D photonic topological insulators. These topological states enable a wide range of applications, including 3D robust waveguide, one-way fiber and negative refraction of surface wave. However, these carefully designed metacrystals are usually very complex, hindering their extension to nanoscale photonic systems. Here, we theoretically proposed and experimentally realized an ideal nodal ring in visible region using a simple 1D photonic crystal. The pi Berry phase around the ring is manifested by a 2pi reflection phase's winding and the resultant drumhead surface states. By breaking the inversion symmetry, the nodal ring can be gapped and the pi-Berry phase would diffuse into a toroidal shaped Berry flux, resulting in photonic ridge states (the 3D extension of quantum valley Hall states). In periodic systems, nodal lines are loops in the three-dimensional momentum space where two bands are degenerate with each other. Nodal lines exhibit rich topological features as they can take various configurations such as rings, links, chains and knots. These line nodes are usually protected by mirror or PT symmetry. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel type of photonic straight nodal lines in a D2d meta-crystal which are protected by roto-inversion time (roto-PT) symmetry. The nodal lines are located at the central axis and hinges of the Brillouin zone. They appear as quadrupole sources of Berry curvature flux and allow for the precise control of the quadrupole strength. Interestingly, there exist topological surface states at all three cutting surfaces, as guaranteed by the pi-quantized Zak phases along all three directions. As frequency changes, the surface state equi-frequency contours evolve from closed to open contours, and become straight lines at a critical transition frequency, at which diffraction-less surface wave propagation are demonstrated, paving way towards development of super-imaging photonic devices.

Valley photonic crystal is one type of photonic topological insulator, whose realization only needs P-symmetry breaking. The domain wall between two valley-contrasting photonic crystals support robust edge states which can wrap around sharp corners without backscattering. Using the robust edge states, one can achieve the pulse transmission. Here, using time-domain measurement in the microwave regime, we show distortionless pulse transmission in a sharply bended waveguide. An Omega-shaped waveguide with four 120-degree bends is constructed with the domain wall between two valley photonic crystal slabs. Experimental results show the progress of Gaussian pulse transmission without distortion, and the full width at half maximum of the output signal was changed slightly in the Omega-shaped waveguide. By measuring steady state electric field distribution, we also confirmed the confined edge states without out-of-plane radiation which benefits from the dispersion below the light line. Exceptional points are degeneracies in non-Hermitian systems. A two-state system with parity-time (PT) symmetry usually has only one exceptional point beyond which the eigenmodes are PT-symmetry broken. The so-called symmetry recovery, i.e., eigenmodes become PT-symmetric again, typically occurs in multi-state systems. Here we show that a two-state ferromagnetic waveguide system can have an exceptional point and a subsequent symmetry recovery due to the presence of accidental degeneracy points when the system is lossless. By introducing a parameter space where both exceptional points reside, we designed a system in which the trajectory in the parameter space can be controlled in situ using an adiabatically tunable external field, allowing us to explore the topological and chiral character of the system by encircling zero, one or two exceptional points. We performed microwave experiments to demonstrate the presence of the exceptional point, symmetry recovery, and the effects arising from their dynamical encircling., Comment: 43 pages, 23 figures

We propose and investigate a new type of metamaterial structure composing of several interpenetrating wire meshes. Calculated band structures show that they exhibit index ellipsoids locating at nonzero k-point in long wavelength limit. We can comprehend these quasistatic modes by Poison's equation and find these modes do not rely on the detailed geometry of the wires but the connectivities of the wires. We can engineer the locations of index ellipsoid by designing the connectivities of the wire meshes.

We show that Weyl points with topological charges 1 and 2 can be found in very simple chiral woodpile photonic crystals, which can be fabricated using current techniques down to the nano-scale. The sign of the topological charges can be tuned by changing the material parameters of the crystal, keeping the structure and the symmetry unchanged. The underlying physics can be understood using a tight binding model, which shows that the sign of the charge depends on the hopping range. Gapless surface states and their back-scattering immune properties are also demonstrated in these systems.

We designed and fabricated a time-reversal invariant Weyl photonic crystal that possesses single Weyl nodes with topological charge of 1 and double Weyl nodes with a higher topological charge of 2. Using numerical simulations and microwave experiment, nontrivial band gaps with nonzero Chern numbers for a fixed kz was demonstrated. The robustness of the surface state between the Weyl photonic crystal and PEC against kz-conserving scattering was experimentally observed.

Inspired by the discovery of quantum hall effect and topological insulator, topological properties of classical waves start to draw worldwide attention. Topological non-trivial bands characterized by non-zero Chern numbers are realized with external magnetic field induced time reversal symmetry breaking or dynamic modulation. Due to the absence of Faraday-like effect, the breaking of time reversal symmetry in an acoustic system is commonly realized with moving background fluids, and hence drastically increases the engineering complexity. Here we show that we can realize effective inversion symmetry breaking and effective gauge field in a reduced two-dimensional system by structurally engineering interlayer couplings, achieving an acoustic analog of the topological Haldane model. We then find and demonstrate unidirectional backscattering immune edge states. We proposed a group-theory method to calculate topological invariant in bi-isotropic photonic crystals invariant under crystallographic point group symmetries. Spin Chern number has been evaluated by the eigenvalues of rotation operators at high symmetry k-points after the pseudo-spin polarized fields are retrieved. Topological characters of photonic edge states and photonic band gaps can be well predicted by total spin Chern number. Nontrivial phase transition is found in large magnetoelectric coupling due to the jump of total spin Chern number. Light transport is also issued at the {\epsilon}/{\mu} mismatching boundary between air and the bi-isotropic photonic crystal. This finding presents the relationship between group symmetry and photonic topological systems, which enables the design of photonic nontrivial states in a rational manner., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Achieving robust transport has attracted much attention in both electronic and photonic systems. Time-reversal invariant photonic crystal can be employed to realize backscattering-immune chiral state, but the chiral bandgap is topologically trivial. Here, we designed and fabricated a metacrystal comprising non-resonant meta-atoms sandwiched between two metallic plates and the system exhibits topological phase transition as established by group classification. The nontrivial bandgap was confirmed by experimentally measured transmission spectra, calculated nonzero spin Chern number and Z2 index. Gapless spin-filtered edge states were demonstrated experimentally by measuring the magnitude and phase of the fields. A strategy is proposed to realize robust transport in time reversal invariant photonic system. Using numerical simulation and microwave experiment, we demonstrate that a chiral guided mode in the channel of a three-dimensional dielectric woodpile photonic crystal is immune to the scattering of a square patch of metal or dielectric inserted to block the channel.
