This paper considers the component system with stair-type consecutive minimal cuts. The system consists of n components and the set of minimal cuts can be linearly ordered. The proposed system generalizes the typical consecutive-k-out-of-n: F systems. By using integer linear programming, this paper shows that such a system can be converted into the consecutive-k-out-of-n: F systems with the insertion of artificial "broken-down" components. Then the system reliability can be obtained by the product form of component reliability matrices and the limit behavior of system could be easily analyzed. Additionally, we show that the integer constraints of the linear programming can be relaxed due to the total unimodularity. Thus, a general linear programming can be used to solve the problem. Numerical examples show the simple and effective new approach.

13. Effect of preconditioning exercise on biceps brachii myotendinous junction displacement during elbow flexor eccentric exercise

- Abstract
The present study tested the hypothesis that 30 low-intensity (10%) eccentric contractions (10%EC) or two maximal voluntary isometric contractions at a long muscle length (2MVIC) that were performed at two days before maximal eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors consisting of five sets of six maximal eccentric contractions (MaxEC) would reduce increases in biceps brachii distal myotendinous junction displacement (MTJd) over the eccentric contractions during MaxEC. Sedentary young men were randomly placed (n = 12/group) to a control group that performed two bouts of MaxEC (CONT-1st, CONT-2nd) separated by two weeks, or one of two preconditioning groups that performed 10%EC or 2MVIC at 20° elbow flexion at two days prior to MaxEC. All exercises were performed by the non-dominant arm. MTJd of each contraction was assessed by B-mode ultrasound, and its changes over sets were compared among the groups. The average MTJd from the start to the end of six eccentric contractions in the first set was similar among the groups (6.4 ± 0.7 mm). Frequency-selective bolometers (FSBs) are a new type of detector for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths that are transparent to all but a narrow range of frequencies as set by characteristics of the absorber itself. Therefore stacks of FSBs tuned to different frequencies provide a low-loss compact method for utilizing a large fraction of the light collected by a telescope. Tests of prototype FSBs indicate that the absorption spectra are well predicted by models, that peak absolute absorption efficiencies of the order of 50% are attainable, and that their out-of-band transmission is high. An assembly test chip (ATC), consisting of varieties of test structures, had been utilized to monitor the package integrity of SOJ lead-on-chip (LOC) packages after various reliability tests. Two different types of epoxy molding compounds, namely biphenyl and EOCN epoxies, were chosen to investigate their effects on package's reliability. After the reliability tests, silicon chip crack was observed in three test samples due to the existence of a large chip backside chipping ([approximately equal to]120 [[micro]meter]). Qualitative study about this failure mechanism was carried out by a finite element analysis and it was found that, due to the higher flexural modulus and CTE of the biphenyl epoxy, the thermally induced stresses developed in the chip encapsulated by this epoxy during reliability tests were more likely to cause the crack propagation in the silicon chip than those induced by using EOCN type epoxy.

Studies have failed to uncover a definite link between migraine headaches and allergic disorders, including asthma. However, this may be a result of deficiencies in study design and sample size. Drug effects provide circumstantial evidence for such a link. Xanthines, including caffeine and theophylline, and calcium-channel blockers are used in the treatment of both migraine and asthma, providing evidence for the existence of a common mechanism. Also, treatment of one disease can bring on the other. For example, adrenergic beta blockers given to prevent migraine can ''unmask'' an asthmatic condition, while on the other hand, bronchodilators (some of which are beta blockers) may cause headache and nausea. In order to test whether a relationship between migraine and asthma indeed exists, pregnant women who had either asthma or migraine were studied, and the children were followed-up until age seven. A total of 2,510 mother-child pairs, including a control group, were included in the study. White women experienced more migraines than black women, although in both groups headaches were more common in women over 20 years of age. The children of women with asthma or allergies had a higher incidence of bronchial asthma, and boys had a higher rate than girls. Women with migraine who also smoked were at increased risk for asthma, as were their children. In this study, women with migraine were also more likely to be smokers. Thus, the association between migraine and asthma in the mother and asthma in the child may be due at least partly to the effects of ''side stream'' smoke, which has been shown in other studies to cause bronchial problems in children. There are also reports of a genetic link between migraine and some types of asthma, because both are associated with specific human leukocyte antigens (HLAs), markers for genetic predispositions. The authors believe that their finding of a high incidence of asthma in the children of others who suffer from migraine argues for a genetic link between the two conditions. The evaluation of two bilayer configurations of silver/aluminum and gold/molybdenum is presented. The examination, which includes details about preparation, testing and the encountered problems, was conducted to study the possibility of using the superconducting materials as highly sensitive thermometers. It is possible to tailor transition temperatures via the selection of materials, their composite material thickness and the comparative ratios in cases of composite materials.

Purpose: To determine the diagnostic capability of spectral domain optical coherence tomography peripapillary retinal volume (RV) measurements. Materials and Methods: A total of 156 patients, 89 primary open-angle glaucoma and 67 normal subjects, were recruited. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography peripapillary RV was calculated for 4 quadrants using 3 annuli of varying scan circle diameters: outer circumpapillary annuli of circular grids 1, 2, and 3 (OCA1, OCA2, OCA3). Area under the receiver operating characteristic curves and pairwise comparisons of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed to determine which quadrants were best for diagnosing primary open-angle glaucoma. The pairwise comparisons of the best ROC curves for RV and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) were performed. The artifact rates were analyzed. Purpose: To compare the diagnostic capability of 3-dimensional (3D) neuroretinal rim parameters with existing 2-dimensional (2D) neuroretinal and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness rim parameters using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) volume scans. Materials and Methods: Design: Institutional prospective pilot study. Study population: 65 subjects (35 open-angle glaucoma patients, 30 normal patients). Observation procedures: One eye of each subject was included. SD-OCT was used to obtain 2D RNFL thickness values and 5 neuroretinal rim parameters [ie, 3D minimum distance band (MDB) thickness, 3D Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width (BMO-MRW), 3D rim volume, 2D rim area, and 2D rim thickness]. Main outcome measures: Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values, sensitivity, and specificity. Results: Comparing all 3D with all 2D parameters, 3D rim parameters (MDB, BMO-MRW, rim volume) generally had higher area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values (range, 0.770 to 0.946) compared with 2D parameters (RNFL thickness, rim area, rim thickness; range, 0.678 to 0.911). For global region analyses, all 3D rim parameters (BMO-MRW, rim volume, MDB) were equal to or better than 2D parameters (RNFL thickness, rim area, rim thickness; P-values from 0.023 to 1.0). Among the three 3D rim parameters (MDB, BMO-MRW, and rim volume), there were no significant differences in diagnostic capability (false discovery rate >0.05 at 95% specificity). Conclusions: 3D neuroretinal rim parameters (MDB, BMO-MRW, and rim volume) demonstrated better diagnostic capability for primary and secondary open-angle glaucomas compared with 2D neuroretinal parameters (rim area, rim thickness). Compared with 2D RNFL thickness, 3D neuroretinal rim parameters have the same or better diagnostic capability. © 2017 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved.
