This study aimed to investigate the association between eating behaviors and hand grip strength in Chinese adults.Materials and Methods: We designed and conducted a cross-sectional study of 2009 Chinese individuals aged 25– 65 years in 2017. Eating behaviors, including breakfast consumption, snacking after dinner, and eating rate, were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Hand grip strength was assessed using a digital grip dynamometer. Age, sex, BMI, physical activity, educational level, occupation, living status, sleep duration, smoking and drinking status, hypertension, diabetes, and depressive symptoms were used as confounding factors.Results: After final adjustments for confounding factors, grip strength was measured as 35.2 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 34.7– 35.8), 36.0 (95% CI: 35.6– 36.4), and 36.9 (95% CI: 36.6– 37.3) for those who skipped, occasionally ate, and regularly ate breakfast, respectively (p for trend < 0.001). Those who always, sometimes, and seldom snacked after dinner (p for trend < 0.001) reported the following grip strength: 34.7 (95% CI: 34.0– 35.3), 36.2 (95% CI: 35.8– 36.6), and 36.9 (95% CI: 36.6– 37.2), respectively. Significant associations were not found between eating rate and grip strength.Conclusion: This study showed that higher frequency of breakfast consumption and lower frequency of snacking after dinner were associated with higher grip strength in Chinese adults. Therefore, eating behaviors may be involved in muscle function.Keywords: breakfast consumption, eating rate, snacking after dinner, grip strength, adult population

Objectives: Poor sleep quality and short sleep duration are associated with an increased risk for muscle mass reduction. Thus, they may also influence muscle strength. This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep quality and duration, and muscle strength in university students. Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 10,125 university students aged 16-30 years. Handgrip strength was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Sleep quality and duration were measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: After adjusting for confounding factors, a positive association between sleep quality and muscle strength was observed in both male and female students. Surface tension and viscosity act as important roles on the fluid flow in microchannel channels. In order to understand the influencing mechanism, three dimensional numerical simulations as well as experimental investigations were carried out on the slug formation and transfer in a rectangle T-junction microchannel. The simulation showed that the increasing Capillary number ( Ca ) resulted in the decreasing slug volume. Due to the existence of film thickness and corner flow, the characteristic length of slug was not the same trend completely. The results also showed that the pressure of junction point fluctuated periodically in the process of slug formation, which can reflect the slug formation period and the effect of the various conditions on pressure change. Two other pressure monitoring points were located in vertical channel and main channel and they monitored the pressure of two phase flow respectively. The increasing surface tension resulted in an increasing of total pressure, the interface pressure drop of two phases and the period of slug formation. The frequency of slug formation and two phases total pressure increased with the viscosity of continuous phase.

The application of microfluidic technology to manipulate cells or biological particles is becoming one of the rapidly growing areas, and various microarray trapping devices have recently been designed for high throughput single-cell analysis and manipulation. In this paper, we design a double-slit microfluidic chip for hydrodynamic cell trapping at the single-cell level, which maintains a high capture ability. The geometric effects on flow behaviour are investigated in detail for optimizing chip architecture, including the flow velocity, the fluid pressure, and the equivalent stress of cells. Based on the geometrical parameters optimized, the double-slit chip enhances the capture of HeLa cells and the drug experiment verifies the feasibility of the drug delivery.

Depositing amorphous silicon doped with different elements on flexible substrates offers a large potential for the roll-to-roll processes lowering the manufacturing cost of solar cells. Unique magnetron sputtering method was adopted to deposit B-doped amorphous silicon thin film on flexible PET substrate instead of solid substrate materials like glass, metal and silicon. Effects of different substrates were investigated, as well as the processing parameters including sputtering power and working pressure. The structure and performance of the samples were characterized with SEM, XRD, surface profile meter and UV-spectrophotometer. The comparison between PET and glass shows that the alternative of PET substrate significantly improved the deposition rate. Optimal results were obtained as pressure of 0.2 Pa and RF power of 120 W, which showed the lowest transmittance as well as a minimum optical band gap, both are of great significance to photovoltaic conversion. Theoretical justification and experimental data including the feasible magnetron sputtering way, PET flexible substrate and optimized process parameters to the mass production of cheap and high performance heterojunction thin film solar cells were achieved.

Microdroplet dosing to cell on a chip could meet the demand of narrow diffusion distance, controllable pulse dosing and less impact to cells. In this work, we studied the diffusion process of microdroplet cell pulse dosing in the three-layer sandwich structure of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)/PCTE (polycarbonate) microporous membrane/PDMS chip. The mathematical model is established to solve the diffusion process and the process of rhodamine transfer to micro-traps is simulated. The rhodamine mass fraction distribution, pressure field and velocity field around the microdroplet and cell surfaces are analyzed for further study of interdiffusion and convective diffusion effect. The cell pulse dosing time and drug delivery efficiency could be controlled by adjusting microdroplet and culture solution velocity without impairing cells at micro-traps. Furthermore, the accuracy and controllability of the cell dosing pulse time and maximum drug mass fraction on cell surfaces are achieved and the drug effect on cells could be analyzed more precisely especially for neuron cell dosing.
