The Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) experiences surface melt events in summer, which could accelerate ice loss and destabilize the ice sheet in a warming world. This study links the interannual variability of RIS surface melt to the northerly wind anomaly over the Ross Sea sector, which is established in association with the quasigeostrophic barotropic Rossby wave trains from the tropical Pacific and subtropical Australia toward West Antarctica. Atmospheric general circulation model experiments suggest that these Rossby wave trains are regulated by El Niño–related sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical central–eastern Pacific and atmospheric heating anomalies over western Australia. El Niño provides an important forcing of the atmospheric circulation anomalies over the Ross Sea via inducing a Rossby wave train, and most surface melt events over the RIS happen during El Niño years. In addition, the anomalous atmospheric heating over western Australia, which is independent of El Niño, is another important forcing that triggers a Rossby wave train extending from subtropical Australia to the Ross Sea. The northerly flow toward the Ross Sea induces strong poleward moisture and heat transport, which further contributes to surface melt over the RIS. Significance Statement: During austral summer, surface melt occurs over the Ross Ice Shelf, accelerates ice loss, and poses ice-sheet destabilization risks in a warming world. The northerly wind anomaly over the Ross sector provides strong poleward heat and moisture transport and is favorable for the surface melt. This wind anomaly is influenced by two remote forcings, El Niño and heating anomaly over western Australia, through generating Rossby wave trains from the tropics and subtropical Australia. The North Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) is the strongest interannual air‐sea coupled system in the subtropical northeastern Pacific, which can significantly impact the development of El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This study examines performance of the second version of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model (CAS‐ESM2), developed primarily at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAP/CAS), in simulating the PMM, ENSO, and their relationship. It reveals that CAS‐ESM2 can well reproduce the tropical climate mean states, including sea surface temperature (SST), surface winds, and precipitation. Furthermore, the model shows a good ability in reproducing the seasonal evolutions of the PMM and ENSO. Moreover, CAS‐ESM2 effectively simulates the influence of the PMM on subsequent ENSO and the underlying physical mechanisms, including the wind‐evaporation‐SST feedback process, the trade wind charging mechanism and summer deep convection mechanism. However, some improvements are still needed, particularly in representing the periodicity of the PMM, an overestimation of the ENSO intensity and westward extension of ENSO‐related SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific. The results obtained from the CAS‐ESM2 showcase significant progress in understanding the interaction between air‐sea interaction systems over the tropics and subtropics. ENSO can trigger extreme weather and climate events worldwide, and lead to substantial economic losses. While tropical processes are acknowledged to influence ENSO, many recent studies have emphasized the important role of extratropical air‐sea variabilities in modulating the occurrence and development of ENSO events. The Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) has been identified as a key channel in transmitting the impact of extratropical forcing on ENSO. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the performance of current climate models in representing the PMM and its relationship with the ENSO. This evaluation holds significant scientific value as it can enhance our understanding of the dynamics underlying the ENSO and help improve the prediction of ENSO. The spring Pacific meridional mode (PMM) is an important precursor of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). However, recent studies reported that only about half of the spring PMM events were followed by ENSO events. This study examines the role of internal climate variability in modulating the impact of PMM on ENSO using 100-member ensemble simulations of the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM). The relationship between spring PMM and following winter ENSO shows a large spread among the 100 members. The variation of spring Aleutian low (AL) intensity is identified to be an important factor modulating the PMM–ENSO relation. The spring AL affects the PMM–ENSO relationship by modifying PMM-generated low-level zonal wind anomalies over the tropical western Pacific. The strengthening of the spring AL is accompanied by westerly wind anomalies over the midlatitude northwestern Pacific, leading to sea surface temperature (SST) cooling there via an enhancement of upward surface heat flux. This results in increased meridional SST gradient and leads to northerly wind anomalies over the subtropical northwestern Pacific, which turn to surface westerly wind anomalies after reaching the equatorial western Pacific due to the conservation of potential vorticity. Thus, the low-level westerly (easterly) wind anomalies over the tropical western Pacific associated with the positive (negative) spring PMM were strengthened (weakened), which further contributes to an enhanced (a weakened) PMM–ENSO relation. The mechanism for the modulation of the AL on the spring PMM–ENSO relationship is verified by a set of AGCM simulations. This study suggests that the condition of the spring AL should be considered when predicting ENSO on the basis of the PMM. Significance Statement: Spring Pacific meridional mode (PMM) is a predictor of ENSO, but not all spring PMM events are accompanied by the occurrence of ENSO events. This study aims to explore the influence of internal climate variability on the relationship between spring PMM and following ENSO. The underlying physical mechanisms for the impact of the Aleutian low on the relationship between spring PMM and ENSO are further examined.
