4. Ferrite: A Judgmental Embedding of Session Types in Rust

Abstract

This paper introduces Ferrite, a shallow embedding of session types in Rust. In contrast to existing session type libraries and embeddings for mainstream languages, Ferrite not only supports linear session types but also shared session types. Shared session types allow sharing (aliasing) of channels while preserving session fidelity (preservation) using type modalities for acquiring and releasing sessions. Ferrite adopts a propositions as types approach and encodes typing derivations as Rust functions, with the proof of successful type-checking manifesting as a Rust program. We provide an evaluation of Ferrite using Servo as a practical example, and demonstrate how safe communication can be achieved in the canvas component using Ferrite.

Abstract

Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales have garnered the greatest popular and scholarly attention despite the interdependence of works across the broad range of his artistic production. We read Andersen's fairy tales in concert with his travel writing to highlight the intertextual aspects that cross these seemingly distinct genres. We leverage recent advances in large language models (LLM) and network theory to generate representations that facilitate user exploration of these intertextual interdependencies across genres and across time. In the first part of our study, we use BERTopic and an LLM model fine‐tuned for nineteenth‐century Danish literary language to present independent and combined topic models of the two corpuses. This approach supports multi‐scalar analysis of intertextual elements within and across these corpuses, thereby implementing a method for macroscopic reading. In the second part of the study, we develop a series of networked representations of the dependencies between fairy tales, where these dependencies are generated on the basis of the shared intertextual topic space of the fairy tales and the travel writing. 30. The effectiveness of visualising plaque on cardiac computed tomography in modifying risk factors for cardiovascular disease: A systematic review.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of disease burden worldwide, with a significant proportion of cases and deaths attributable to modifiable risk factors. Recent interest has emerged in using cardiac computed tomography (CT) imaging as a tool to enhance motivation and drive positive behavioural changes. However, the impact of providing visual feedback of plaque from CT on risk factor control and individual health behaviours remains understudied. This study aimed to assess the effects of visual feedback from cardiac CT imaging on health-related behaviours and risk factor control. A systematic search of electronic databases was conducted, yielding nine studies (five randomised controlled trials and four observational studies) for analysis. The results varied, but based on the limited low-quality data, CT imaging appears to have short-term favourable effects on cholesterol levels and systolic blood pressure reductions, and positive dietary behavioural changes. Further research is warranted to better understand the long-term impact of cardiac CT imaging on health behaviours and risk factor modification. This systematic review explores the impact of visual feedback from cardiac computed tomography (CT) imaging on health behaviours, risk factor modification, and cardiovascular risk scores. The review, based on nine diverse studies, suggests that CT imaging has short-term favourable effects on cholesterol levels, systolic blood pressure reduction, and positive dietary changes. The genotypes were determined by the detection of single nucleotide polymorphism. To explore the interaction between omentin-1 gene polymorphism and obesity and age, the body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 and the age of 55 years old were preset as the cut-off value of stratified analysis. Furthermore, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the levels of omentin-1, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 in peripheral blood and synovial fluid and the contents of IL-1β, IL-6, metalloproteinase (MMP)-13 and collagen (COL)-II in the supernatant of knee joint cartilage tissue.Results: The Val109Asp polymorphism of the omentin-1 gene showed no obvious correlation with KOA. Compared with Asp/Asp genotype carriers with BMI < 25 kg/m2 and age < 55 years old, Val109 allele carriers with BMI≥ 25 kg/m2 and age ≥ 55 years old had obviously increased risk of KOA (adjusted OR = 1.416, p = 0.042; adjusted OR = 1.735, p = 0.038, respectively). In the KOA group, only the omentin-1 levels were significantly lower in the plasma and synovial fluid of Ala/Ala genotype carriers than in those of Asp/Asp genotype carriers. Meanwhile, the proportion of patients with moderate–severe K-L Classification, the levels of IL-1β, IL-6 in synovial fluid and the expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and MMP-13 in cartilage tissue significantly increased (p < 0.05). By contrast, the expression level of COL-II in cartilage tissue significantly decreased (p < 0.05).Conclusions: The Val109Asp polymorphism of the omentin-1 gene may not be the primary pathogenic factor of KOA in Chinese.
