Abstract

Screech tones are known to bolster the mixing and spread rate of non-swirling supersonic jets. A study was conducted to investigate the screech tone and mode switching characteristics of supersonic swirling jets. The study, which along with the results are thoroughly discussed, appears to be the first of its kind to experimentally establish the impact of swirl in supersonic jets on pressure field, shock structure and onset of flow recirculation.

Abstract

Generating a sufficient degree of swirl in underexpanded jets coming from a convergent nozzle is capable of eliminating the quasiperiodic shock cells that are essential components in the production of screech tone noise. Imparting swirl to a supersonic jet removes the presence of the fourth and fifth shock shells that cause the screech tone noise. The study also proved that flow recirculation alone is not capable of eliminating the quasiperiodic shock shell structure.
