Neutral atom array has emerged as a promising platform for quantum computation owing to its high-fidelity two-qubit gate, arbitrary connectivity and overwhelming scalability. Nevertheless, fault-tolerant quantum computing on the neutral atom platform requires consideration of the types of errors that neutral atoms are prone to. One typical and major error is leakage error from Rydberg state when implementing multi-qubit gate. Such leakage error is harmful by propagating multiple pauli errors in quantum circuit. Researchers have proposed erasure conversion protocol, which utilizes fast leakage detection to convert leakage error to benign erasure error. This method has a favorable error distance d, but is limited to certain atom species. Here, we propose a new method to deal with such leakage error in measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC), to which we refer as "Leakage Tracking". We remove the demand for mid-circuit leakage detection but infer the probabilities and locations of pauli errors through gate sequence and final leakage detection. We show that this method has an error distance de = d and reaches a high threshold 1.7% per CZ gate for pure leakage error and perfect final leakage detection. In presence of atom loss and other pauli errors, we show the advantage in error distance over erasure conversion when the ratio of leakage error is close to one., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

In 1927, during the fifth Solvay Conference, Einstein and Bohr described a double-slit interferometer with a "movable slit" that can detect the momentum recoil of one photon. Here, we report a faithful realization of the Einstein-Bohr interferometer using a single atom in an optical tweezer, cooled to the motional ground state in three dimensions. The single atom has an intrinsic momentum uncertainty comparable to a single photon, which serves as a movable slit obeying the minimum Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The atom's momentum wavefunction is dynamically tunable by the tweezer laser power, which enables observation of an interferometric visibility reduction at a shallower trap, demonstrating the quantum nature of this interferometer. Quantum Computational Superiority boasts rapid computation and high energy efficiency. Despite recent advances in classical algorithms aimed at refuting the milestone claim of Google's sycamore, challenges remain in generating uncorrelated samples of random quantum circuits. In this paper, we present a groundbreaking large-scale system technology that leverages optimization on global, node, and device levels to achieve unprecedented scalability for tensor networks. This enables the handling of large-scale tensor networks with memory capacities reaching tens of terabytes, surpassing memory space constraints on a single node. Our techniques enable accommodating large-scale tensor networks with up to tens of terabytes of memory, reaching up to 2304 GPUs with a peak computing power of 561 PFLOPS half-precision. Notably, we have achieved a time-to-solution of 14.22 seconds with energy consumption of 2.39 kWh which achieved fidelity of 0.002 and our most remarkable result is a time-to-solution of 17.18 seconds, with energy consumption of only 0.29 kWh which achieved a XEB of 0.002 after post-processing, outperforming Google's quantum processor Sycamore in both speed and energy efficiency, which recorded 600 seconds and 4.3 kWh, respectively.

Random quantum circuit sampling serves as a benchmark to demonstrate quantum computational advantage. Recent progress in classical algorithms, especially those based on tensor network methods, has significantly reduced the classical simulation time and challenged the claim of the first-generation quantum advantage experiments. However, in terms of generating uncorrelated samples, time-to-solution, and energy consumption, previous classical simulation experiments still underperform the \textit{Sycamore} processor. Here we report an energy-efficient classical simulation algorithm, using 1432 GPUs to simulate quantum random circuit sampling which generates uncorrelated samples with higher linear cross entropy score and is 7 times faster than \textit{Sycamore} 53 qubits experiment. We propose a post-processing algorithm to reduce the overall complexity, and integrated state-of-the-art high-performance general-purpose GPU to achieve two orders of lower energy consumption compared to previous works. Our work provides the first unambiguous experimental evidence to refute \textit{Sycamore}'s claim of quantum advantage, and redefines the boundary of quantum computational advantage using random circuit sampling., Comment: This work was completed on August 2023. In this work, we give a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for solving electronic structure problems of molecules using only linear quantum optical systems. The variational ansatz we proposed is a hybrid of non-interacting Boson dynamics and classical computational chemistry methods, specifically, the Hartree-Fock method and the Configuration Interaction method. The Boson part is built by a linear optical interferometer which is easier to realize compared with the well-known Unitary Coupled Cluster (UCC) ansatz composed of quantum gates in conventional VQE and the classical part is merely classical processing acting on the Hamiltonian. We called such ansatzes Boson Sampling-Classic (BS-C). The appearance of permanents in the Boson part has its physical intuition to provide different kinds of resources from commonly used single-, double-, and higher-excitations in classical methods and the UCC ansatz to exploring chemical quantum states. Such resources can help enhance the accuracy of methods used in the classical parts. We give a scalable hybrid homodyne and photon number measurement procedure for evaluating the energy value which has intrinsic abilities to mitigate photon loss errors and discuss the extra measurement cost induced by the no Pauli exclusion principle for Bosons with its solutions. To demonstrate our proposal, we run numerical experiments on several molecules and obtain their potential energy curves reaching chemical accuracy., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, known for their robust topological order and the emergence of non-Abelian anyons, have captured significant interest due to the appealing applications in fault-tolerant quantum computing. Bottom-up approach on an engineered quantum platform will provide opportunities to operate FQH states without external magnetic field and enhance local and coherent manipulation of these exotic states. Here we demonstrate a lattice version of photon FQH state using a programmable on-chip platform based on photon blockade and engineering gauge fields on a novel two-dimensional circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. We first observe the effective photon Lorentz force and butterfly spectrum in the artificial gauge field, a prerequisite for FQH states. After adiabatic assembly of Laughlin FQH wavefunction of 1/2 filling factor from localized photons, we observe strong density correlation and chiral topological flow among the FQH photons. We then verify the unique features of FQH states in response to external fields, including the incompressibility of generating quasiparticles and the smoking-gun signature of fractional quantum Hall conductivity. Our work represents a significant advance in the bottom-up creation and manipulation of novel strongly correlated topological quantum matter composed of photons and opens up possibilities for fault-tolerant quantum information devices., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

In this work, we give a polynomial-time quantum algorithm for solving the ground states of a class of classically hard Hamiltonians. The mechanism of the exponential speedup that appeared in our algorithm comes from dissipation in open quantum systems. To utilize the dissipation, we introduce a new idea of treating vectorized density matrices as pure states, which we call the vectorization picture. By doing so, the Lindblad master equation (LME) becomes a Schr\"odinger equation with non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The steady state of the LME, therefore, corresponds to the ground states of a special class of Hamiltonians. The runtime of the LME has no dependence on the overlap between the initial state and the ground state. For the input part, given a Hamiltonian, under plausible assumptions, we give a polynomial-time classical procedure to judge and solve whether there exists LME with the desired steady state. For the output part, we propose a novel measurement strategy to extract information about the ground state from the original steady density matrix. We show that the Hamiltonians that can be efficiently solved by our algorithms contain classically hard instances assuming $\text{P}\neq \text{BQP}$. Photon loss is the biggest enemy for scalable photonic quantum information processing. This problem can be tackled by using quantum error correction, provided that the overall photon loss is below a threshold of 1/3. However, all reported on-demand and indistinguishable single-photon sources still fall short of this threshold. Here, by using tailor shaped laser pulse excitation on a high-quantum efficiency single quantum dot deterministically coupled to a tunable open microcavity, we demonstrate a high-performance source with a single-photon purity of 0.9795(6), photon indistinguishability of 0.986(16), and an overall system efficiency of 0.717(20), simultaneously. This source for the first time reaches the efficiency threshold for scalable photonic quantum computing. With this source, we further demonstrate 1.87(13) dB intensity squeezing, and consecutive 40-photon events with 1.67 mHz count rate.

We report new Gaussian boson sampling experiments with pseudo-photon-number-resolving detection, which register up to 255 photon-click events. We consider partial photon distinguishability and develop a more complete model for the characterization of the noisy Gaussian boson sampling. In the quantum computational advantage regime, we use Bayesian tests and correlation function analysis to validate the samples against all current classical mockups. Estimating with the best classical algorithms to date, generating a single ideal sample from the same distribution on the supercomputer Frontier would take ~ 600 years using exact methods, whereas our quantum computer, Jiuzhang 3.0, takes only 1.27 us to produce a sample. Nonlocality arising in networks composed of several independent sources gives rise to phenomena radically different from that in standard Bell scenarios. Over the years, the phenomenon of network nonlocality in the entanglement-swapping scenario has been well investigated and demonstrated. However, it is known that violations of the so-called bilocality inequality used in previous experimental demonstrations cannot be used to certify the non-classicality of their sources. This has put forward a stronger concept for nonlocality in networks, called full network nonlocality. Here, we experimentally observe full network nonlocal correlations in a network where the source-independence, locality, and measurement-independence loopholes are closed. This is ensured by employing two independent sources, rapid setting generation, and space-like separations of relevant events. Quantum metrology employs quantum resources to enhance the measurement sensitivity beyond that can be achieved classically. While multi-photon entangled NOON states can in principle beat the shot-noise limit and reach the Heisenberg limit, high NOON states are difficult to prepare and fragile to photon loss which hinders it from reaching unconditional quantum metrological advantages. Here, we combine the idea of unconventional nonlinear interferometers and stimulated emission of squeezed light, previously developed for photonic quantum computer Jiuzhang, to propose and realize a new scheme that achieves a scalable, unconditional, and robust quantum metrological advantage. We observe a 5.8(1)-fold enhancement above the shot-noise limit in the Fisher information extracted per photon, without discounting for photon loss and imperfections, which outperforms ideal 5-NOON states. The Heisenberg-limited scaling, the robustness to external photon loss, and the ease-to-use of our method make it applicable in practical quantum metrology at low photon flux regime., Comment: To be published, with an independent and simultaneous submission on arXiv:2111.09756

Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) is not only a feasible protocol for demonstrating quantum computational advantage, but also mathematically associated with certain graph-related and quantum chemistry problems. In particular, it is proposed that the generated samples from the GBS could be harnessed to enhance the classical stochastic algorithms in searching some graph features. Here, we use Jiuzhang, a noisy intermediate-scale quantum computer, to solve graph problems. The samples are generated from a 144-mode fully-connected photonic processor, with photon-click up to 80 in the quantum computational advantage regime. We investigate the open question of whether the GBS enhancement over the classical stochastic algorithms persists -- and how it scales -- with an increasing system size on noisy quantum devices in the computationally interesting regime. We experimentally observe the presence of GBS enhancement with large photon-click number and a robustness of the enhancement under certain noise. Our work is a step toward testing real-world problems using the existing noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers, and hopes to stimulate the development of more efficient classical and quantum-inspired algorithms.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of many-body systems is challenging for classical computing, providing opportunities for demonstrating practical quantum computational advantage with analogue quantum simulators. It is proposed to be classically intractable to sample driven thermalized many-body states of Bose-Hubbard systems, and further extract multi-point correlations for characterizing quantum phases. Here, leveraging dedicated precise manipulations and number-resolved detection through a quantum gas microscope, we implement and sample a 32-site driven Hubbard chain in the thermalized phase. Multi-point correlations of up to 14th-order extracted from experimental samples offer clear distinctions between the thermalized and many-body-localized phases. In terms of estimated computational powers, the quantum simulator is comparable to the fastest supercomputer with currently known best algorithms. Nonlocality captures one of the counterintuitive features of nature that defies classical intuition. Recent investigations reveal that our physical world's nonlocality is at least tripartite; i.e., genuinely tripartite nonlocal correlations in nature cannot be reproduced by any causal theory involving bipartite nonclassical resources and unlimited shared randomness. Here, by allowing the fair sampling assumption and postselection, we experimentally demonstrate such genuine tripartite nonlocality in a network under strict locality constraints that are ensured by spacelike separating all relevant events and employing fast quantum random number generators and high-speed polarization measurements. In particular, for a photonic quantum triangular network we observe a locality-loophole-free violation of the Bell-type inequality by 7.57 standard deviations for a postselected tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state of fidelity $(93.13 \pm 0.24)\%$, which convincingly disproves the possibility of simulating genuine tripartite nonlocality by bipartite nonlocal resources with globally shared randomness., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Physicists describe nature using mathematics as the natural language, and for quantum mechanics, it prefers to use complex numbers. However, whether complex numbers are really necessary for the theory has been debated ever since its birth. Recently, it has been shown that a three-party correlation created in entanglement swapping scenarios comprising independent states and measurements cannot be reproduced using only real numbers. Previous experiments have conceptually supported the predication, yet not satisfying the independent state preparations and measurements simultaneously. Here, we implement such a test with two truly independent sources delivering entangled photons to three parties under strict locality conditions. By employing fast quantum random number generators and high-speed polarization measurements, we space-like separate all relevant events to ensure independent state preparations and measurements, and close locality loopholes simultaneously. Recent breakthroughs have opened the possibility to intermediate-scale quantum computing with tens to hundreds of qubits, and shown the potential for solving classical challenging problems, such as in chemistry and condensed matter physics. However, the extremely high accuracy needed to surpass classical computers poses a critical demand to the circuit depth, which is severely limited by the non-negligible gate infidelity, currently around 0.1-1%. Here, by incorporating a virtual Heisenberg circuit, which acts effectively on the measurement observables, to a real shallow Schr\"odinger circuit, which is implemented realistically on the quantum hardware, we propose a paradigm of Schr\"odinger-Heisenberg variational quantum algorithms to resolve this problem. We choose a Clifford virtual circuit, whose effect on the Hamiltonian can be efficiently and classically implemented according to the Gottesman-Knill theorem. Yet, it greatly enlarges the state expressivity, realizing much larger unitary t-designs. Our method enables accurate quantum simulation and computation that otherwise is only achievable with much deeper and more accurate circuits conventionally. This has been verified in our numerical experiments for a better approximation of random states and a higher-fidelity solution to the ground state energy of the XXZ model. To ensure a long-term quantum computational advantage, the quantum hardware should be upgraded to withstand the competition of continuously improved classical algorithms and hardwares. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting quantum computing systems \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1, which has 66 qubits in a two-dimensional array in a tunable coupler architecture. The readout fidelity of \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 is considerably improved to an average of 97.74\%. The more powerful quantum processor enables us to achieve larger-scale random quantum circuit sampling, with a system scale of up to 60 qubits and 24 cycles. The achieved sampling task is about 6 orders of magnitude more difficult than that of Sycamore [Nature \textbf{574}, 505 (2019)] in the classic simulation, and 3 orders of magnitude more difficult than the sampling task on \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.0 [arXiv:2106.14734 (2021)]. The time consumption of classically simulating random circuit sampling experiment using state-of-the-art classical algorithm and supercomputer is extended to tens of thousands of years (about $4.8\times 10^4$ years), while \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 only takes about 4.2 hours, thereby significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.

The increasingly complex quantum electronic circuits with a number of coupled quantum degrees of freedom will become intractable to be simulated on classical computers, and requires quantum computers for an efficient simulation. In turn, it will be a central concept in quantum-aided design for next-generation quantum processors. Here, we demonstrate variational quantum eigensolvers to simulate superconducting quantum circuits with varying parameters covering a plasmon-transition regime, which reveals an advanced post-transmon qubit, "plasmonium". We fabricate this new qubit and demonstrate that it exhibits not only high single- and two-qubit gate fidelities (99.85(1)% and 99.58(3)%, respectively), but also a shrinking (by 60%) physical size and larger (by 50%) anharmonicity than the transmon, which can bring a number of advantages for scaling up multi-qubit devices. We propose a new method to directly measure a general multi-particle quantum wave function, a single matrix element in a multi-particle density matrix, by quantum teleportation. The density matrix element is embedded in a virtual logical qubit and is nondestructively teleported to a single physical qubit for readout. We experimentally implement this method to directly measure the wavefunction of a photonic mixed quantum state beyond a single photon using a single observable for the first time. Our method also provides an exponential advantage over the standard quantum state tomography in measurement complexity to fully characterize a sparse multi-particle quantum state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The tantalizing promise of quantum computational speedup in solving certain problems has been strongly supported by recent experimental evidence from a high-fidelity 53-qubit superconducting processor1 and Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) with up to 76 detected photons. Analogous to the increasingly sophisticated Bell tests that continued to refute local hidden variable theories, quantum computational advantage tests are expected to provide increasingly compelling experimental evidence against the Extended Church-Turing thesis. In this direction, continued competition between upgraded quantum hardware and improved classical simulations is required. Here, we report a new GBS experiment that produces up to 113 detection events out of a 144-mode photonic circuit. We develop a new high-brightness and scalable quantum light source, exploring the idea of stimulated squeezed photons, which has simultaneously near-unity purity and efficiency. This GBS is programmable by tuning the phase of the input squeezed states. We demonstrate a new method to efficiently validate the samples by inferring from computationally friendly subsystems, which rules out hypotheses including distinguishable photons and thermal states. We show that our noisy GBS experiment passes the nonclassicality test using an inequality, and we reveal non-trivial genuine high-order correlation in the GBS samples, which are evidence of robustness against possible classical simulation schemes. The photonic quantum computer, Jiuzhang 2.0, yields a Hilbert space dimension up to $10^{43}$, and a sampling rate $10^{24}$ faster than using brute-force simulation on supercomputers., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. Scaling up to a large number of qubits with high-precision control is essential in the demonstrations of quantum computational advantage to exponentially outpace the classical hardware and algorithmic improvements. Here, we develop a two-dimensional programmable superconducting quantum processor, \textit{Zuchongzhi}, which is composed of 66 functional qubits in a tunable coupling architecture. To characterize the performance of the whole system, we perform random quantum circuits sampling for benchmarking, up to a system size of 56 qubits and 20 cycles. The computational cost of the classical simulation of this task is estimated to be 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than the previous work on 53-qubit Sycamore processor [Nature \textbf{574}, 505 (2019)]. We estimate that the sampling task finished by \textit{Zuchongzhi} in about 1.2 hours will take the most powerful supercomputer at least 8 years. Our work establishes an unambiguous quantum computational advantage that is infeasible for classical computation in a reasonable amount of time. The high-precision and programmable quantum computing platform opens a new door to explore novel many-body phenomena and implement complex quantum algorithms.

We experimentally demonstrate that when three single photons transmit through two polarization channels, in a well-defined pre- and postselected ensemble, there are no two photons in the same polarization channel by weak-strength measurement, a counter-intuitive quantum counting effect called quantum pigeonhole paradox. We further show that this effect breaks down in second-order measurement. These results indicate the existence of quantum pigeonhole paradox and its operating regime., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Standard quantum theory was formulated with complex-valued Schrodinger equations, wave functions, operators, and Hilbert spaces. Previous work attempted to simulate quantum systems using only real numbers by exploiting an enlarged Hilbert space. A fundamental question arises: are complex numbers really necessary in the standard formalism of quantum theory? To answer this question, a quantum game has been developed to distinguish standard quantum theory from its real-number analog by revealing a contradiction in the maximum game scores between a high-fidelity multi-qubit quantum experiment and players using only real-number quantum theory. Here, using superconducting qubits, we faithfully experimentally implement the quantum game based on entanglement swapping with a state-of-the-art fidelity of 0.952(1), which beats the real-number bound of 7.66 by 43 standard deviations. Quantum walks are the quantum mechanical analogue of classical random walks and an extremely powerful tool in quantum simulations, quantum search algorithms, and even for universal quantum computing. In our work, we have designed and fabricated an 8x8 two-dimensional square superconducting qubit array composed of 62 functional qubits. We used this device to demonstrate high fidelity single and two particle quantum walks. Furthermore, with the high programmability of the quantum processor, we implemented a Mach-Zehnder interferometer where the quantum walker coherently traverses in two paths before interfering and exiting. By tuning the disorders on the evolution paths, we observed interference fringes with single and double walkers. Gaussian boson sampling exploits squeezed states to provide a highly efficient way to demonstrate quantum computational advantage. We perform experiments with 50 input single-mode squeezed states with high indistinguishability and squeezing parameters, which are fed into a 100-mode ultralow-loss interferometer with full connectivity and random transformation, and sampled using 100 high-efficiency single-photon detectors. The whole optical set-up is phase-locked to maintain a high coherence between the superposition of all photon number states. We observe up to 76 output photon-clicks, which yield an output state space dimension of $10^{30}$ and a sampling rate that is $10^{14}$ faster than using the state-of-the-art simulation strategy and supercomputers. Quantum no-cloning, the impossibility of perfectly cloning an arbitrary unknown quantum state, is one of the most fundamental limitations due to the laws of quantum mechanics, which underpin the physical security of quantum key distribution. Quantum physics does allow, however, approximate cloning with either imperfect state fidelity and/or probabilistic success. Whereas approximate quantum cloning of single-particle states has been tested previously, experimental cloning of quantum entanglement -- a highly non-classical correlation -- remained unexplored. Based on a multiphoton linear optics platform, we demonstrate quantum cloning of two photon entangled states for the first time. Remarkably our results show that one maximally entangled photon pair can be broadcast into two entangled pairs, both with state fidelities above 50\%. Quantum error correction is an essential tool for reliably performing tasks for processing quantum information on a large scale. However, integration into quantum circuits to achieve these tasks is problematic when one realizes that non-transverse operations, which are essential for universal quantum computation, lead to the spread of errors. Quantum gate teleportation has been proposed as an elegant solution for this. Here, one replaces these fragile, non-transverse inline gates with the generation of specific, highly entangled offline resource states that can be teleported into the circuit to implement the non-transverse gate. As the first important step, we create a maximally entangled state between a physical and an error-correctable logical qubit and use it as a teleportation resource. We then demonstrate the teleportation of quantum information encoded on the physical qubit into the error-corrected logical qubit with fidelities up to 0.786. Intensity squeezing, i.e., photon number fluctuations below the shot noise limit, is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that the intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. Yet, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fibre-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar system. We detect pulsed single-photon streams with 22.6% system efficiency, which show subshot-noise intensity fluctuation with an intensity squeezing of 0.59 dB. We estimate a corrected squeezing of 3.29 dB at the first lens. The observed intensity squeezing provides the last piece of the fundamental picture of resonance fluorescence; which can be used as a new standard for optical radiation and in scalable quantum metrology with indistinguishable single photons., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Quantum computing experiments are moving into a new realm of increasing size and complexity, with the short-term goal of demonstrating an advantage over classical computers. Boson sampling is a promising platform for such a goal, however, the number of involved single photons was up to five so far, limiting these small-scale implementations to a proof-of-principle stage. Here, we develop solid-state sources of highly efficient, pure and indistinguishable single photons, and 3D integration of ultra-low-loss optical circuits. We perform an experiment with 20 single photons fed into a 60-mode interferometer, and, in its output, sample over Hilbert spaces with a size of $10^{14}$ $-$over ten orders of magnitude larger than all previous experiments. An optimal single-photon source should deterministically deliver one and only one photon at a time, with no trade-off between the source's efficiency and the photon indistinguishability. However, all reported solid-state sources of indistinguishable single photons had to rely on polarization filtering which reduced the efficiency by 50%, which fundamentally limited the scaling of photonic quantum technologies. Here, we overcome this final long-standing challenge by coherently driving quantum dots deterministically coupled to polarization-selective Purcell microcavities--two examples are narrowband, elliptical micropillars and broadband, elliptical Bragg gratings. A polarization-orthogonal excitation-collection scheme is designed to minimize the polarization-filtering loss under resonant excitation. We demonstrate a polarized single-photon efficiency of 0.60+/-0.02 (0.56+/-0.02), a single-photon purity of 0.975+/-0.005 (0.991+/-0.003), and an indistinguishability of 0.975+/-0.006 (0.951+/-0.005) for the micropillar (Bragg grating) device. Adiabatic quantum computing enables the preparation of many-body ground states. This is key for applications in chemistry, materials science, and beyond. Realisation poses major experimental challenges: Direct analog implementation requires complex Hamiltonian engineering, while the digitised version needs deep quantum gate circuits. To bypass these obstacles, we suggest an adiabatic variational hybrid algorithm, which employs short quantum circuits and provides a systematic quantum adiabatic optimisation of the circuit parameters. The quantum adiabatic theorem promises not only the ground state but also that the excited eigenstates can be found. We report the first experimental demonstration that many-body eigenstates can be efficiently prepared by an adiabatic variational algorithm assisted with a multi-qubit superconducting coprocessor. We track the real-time evolution of the ground and exited states of transverse-field Ising spins with a fidelity up that can reach about 99%., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Efficient excitation of a single two-level system usually requires that the driving field is at the same frequency as the atomic transition. However, the scattered laser light in solid-state implementations can dominate over the single photons, imposing an outstanding challenge to perfect single-photon sources. Here, we propose a background-free method using a phase-locked dichromatic electromagnetic field with no spectral overlap with the optical transition for a coherent control of a two-level system, and we demonstrate this method experimentally with a single quantum dot embedded in a micropillar. Single photons generated by pi excitation show a purity of 0.988(1) and indistinguishability of 0.962(6). Further, the phase-coherent nature of the two-color excitation is captured by the resonance-fluorescence intensity dependence on the relative phase between the two pulses. We show that low-depth random quantum circuits can be efficiently simulated by a quantum teleportation-inspired algorithm. By using logical qubits to redirect and teleport the quantum information in quantum circuits, the original circuits can be renormalized to new circuits with a smaller number of logical qubits. We demonstrate the algorithm to simulate several random quantum circuits, including 1D-chain 1000-qubit 42-depth, 2D-grid 125*8-qubit 42-depth and 2D-Bristlecone 72-qubit 32-depth circuits. We report the preparation and verification of a genuine 12-qubit entanglement in a superconducting processor. The processor that we designed and fabricated has qubits lying on a 1D chain with relaxation times ranging from 29.6 to 54.6 $\mu$s. The fidelity of the 12-qubit entanglement was measured to be above $0.5544\pm0.0025$, exceeding the genuine multipartite entanglement threshold by 21 statistical standard deviations. Our entangling circuit to generate linear cluster states is depth-invariant in the number of qubits and uses single- and double-qubit gates instead of collective interactions. Our results are a substantial step towards large-scale random circuit sampling and scalable measurement-based quantum computing.

The key challenge to scalable optical quantum computing, boson sampling, and quantum metrology is sources of single photons with near-unity system efficiency and simultaneously near-perfect indistinguishability in all degrees of freedom (including spectral, temporal, spatial, and polarization). However, previous high-indistinguishability solid-state single-photon sources had to rely on polarization filtering that reduced the system efficiency by at least 50%. Here, we overcome this challenge by developing a new single-photon source based on a coherently driven quantum dot embedded in an elliptical micropillar. The asymmetric cavity lifts the polarization degeneracy into two orthogonal linearly polarized modes with a suitable energy separation. We design an excitation-collection scheme that allows the creation and collection of single photons with an indistinguishability of 0.976(1) and a degree of polarization of 91%. Our method provides a solution of combining near-unity system efficiency and indistinguishability compatible with background-free resonant excitation, and opens the way to truly optimal single-photon sources for scalable photonic quantum technologies., Comment: submitted for publication on 8 August 2018

Quantum-to-classical transition is a fundamental open question in physics frontier. Quantum decoherence theory points out that the inevitable interaction with environment is a sink carrying away quantum coherence, which is responsible for the suppression of quantum superposition in open quantum system. Recently, quantum Darwinism theory further extends the role of environment, serving as communication channel, to explain the classical objectivity emerging in quantum measurement process. Here, we used a six-photon quantum simulator to investigate classical and quantum information proliferation in quantum Darwinism process. In the simulation, many environmental photons are scattered from an observed quantum system and they are collected and used to infer the system's state. We observed redundancy of system's classical information and suppression of quantum correlation in the fragments of environmental photons. Boson sampling is a well-defined task that is strongly believed to be intractable for classical computers, but can be efficiently solved by a specific quantum simulator. However, an outstanding problem for large-scale experimental boson sampling is the scalability. Here we report an experiment on boson sampling with photon loss, and demonstrate that boson sampling with a few photons lost can increase the sampling rate. Our experiment uses a quantum-dot-micropillar single-photon source demultiplexed into up to seven input ports of a 16*16 mode ultra-low-loss photonic circuit, and we detect three-, four- and five-fold coincidence counts. We implement and validate lossy boson sampling with one and two photons lost, and obtain sampling rates of 187 kHz, 13.6 kHz, and 0.78 kHz for five-, six- and seven-photon boson sampling with two photons lost, which is 9.4, 13.9, and 18.0 times faster than the standard boson sampling, respectively. A central theme in quantum information science is to coherently control an increasing number of quantum particles as well as their internal and external degrees of freedom (DoFs), meanwhile maintaining a high level of coherence. The ability to create and verify multiparticle entanglement with individual control and measurement of each qubit serves as an important benchmark for quantum technologies. To this end, genuine multipartite entanglement have been reported up to 14 trapped ions, 10 photons, and 10 superconducting qubits. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an 18-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement by simultaneous exploiting three different DoFs of six photons, including their paths, polarization, and orbital angular momentum (OAM). We develop high-stability interferometers for reversible quantum logic operations between the photon's different DoFs with precision and efficiencies close to unity, enabling simultaneous readout of 262,144 outcome combinations of the 18-qubit state. A state fidelity of 0.708(16) is measured, confirming the genuine entanglement of all the 18 qubits., Comment: submitted

Processing of digital images is continuously gaining in volume and relevance, with concomitant demands on data storage, transmission and processing power. Encoding the image information in quantum-mechanical systems instead of classical ones and replacing classical with quantum information processing may alleviate some of these challenges. By encoding and processing the image information in quantum-mechanical systems, we here demonstrate the framework of quantum image processing, where a pure quantum state encodes the image information: we encode the pixel values in the probability amplitudes and the pixel positions in the computational basis states. Our quantum image representation reduces the required number of qubits compared to existing implementations, and we present image processing algorithms that provide exponential speed-up over their classical counterparts. For the commonly used task of detecting the edge of an image, we propose and implement a quantum algorithm that completes the task with only one single-qubit operation, independent of the size of the image. Superconducting quantum circuits are promising candidate for building scalable quantum computers. Here, we use a four-qubit superconducting quantum processor to solve a two-dimensional system of linear equations based on a quantum algorithm proposed by Harrow, Hassidim, and Lloyd [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 150502 (2009)], which promises an exponential speedup over classical algorithms under certain circumstances. We benchmark the solver with quantum inputs and outputs, and characterize it by non-trace-preserving quantum process tomography, which yields a process fidelity of $0.837\pm0.006$. Our results highlight the potential of superconducting quantum circuits for applications in solving large-scale linear systems, a ubiquitous task in science and engineering.
