Abstract

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates generates tremendous research endeavors, but the ground state of their parent compounds is still under debate. Here, we report experimental evidences for the dominant role of Kondo scattering in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films. A resistivity minimum associated with logarithmic temperature dependence in both longitudinal and Hall resistivities are observed in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 samples before the superconducting transition. A linear scaling behavior $\sigma_{xy}^{AHE}\sim\sigma_{xx}$ between anomalous Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}^{AHE}$ and conductivity $\sigma_{xx}$ is revealed, verifying the dominant Kondo scattering at low temperature. The effect of weak (anti-)localization is found to be secondary. Our experiments can help clarifying the basic physics in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 infinite-layer thin films.

Abstract

The spatially-resolved relaxation characteristics of photoinduced quasiparticles (QPs) in CuO$sub 2$ planes of underdoped YBCO are disclosed by polarized fs time-resolved spectroscopy. The relaxation time (tau) along b axis diverges at Tc, and appears to be governed by a temperature-dependent gap Delta(T) at T < Tc. Furthermore, for T > Tc, a monotonic increase of tau with decreasing T along the b axis and ab diagonal was observed and can be attributed to a temperature-independent gap Delta$sub p$. The results lend support to recombination dominant scenario of QP dynamics. Abstract

The polarized femtosecond spectroscopies obtained from well characterized (100) and (110) YBa2Cu3O7-\delta thin films are reported. This bulk-sensitive spectroscopy, combining with the well-textured samples, serves as an effective probe to quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in different crystalline orientations. The significant anisotropy in both the magnitude of the photoinduced transient reflectivity change and the characteristic relaxation time indicates that the nature of the relaxation channel is intrinsically different in various axes and planes. By the orientation-dependent analysis, d-wave symmetry of the bulk-superconducting gap in cuprate superconductors emerges naturally., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. We have investigated the accuracy of the 1s-vacancy fluorescence data base of Kaastra & Mewe (1993, A&AS, 97, 443) resulting from the initial atomic physics calculations and the subsequent scaling along isoelectronic sequences. In particular, we have focused on the relatively simple Be-like and F-like 1s-vacancy sequences. We find that the earlier atomic physics calculations for the oscillator strengths and autoionization rates of singly-charged B II and Ne II are in sufficient agreement with our present calculations. However, the substantial charge dependence of these quantities along each isoelectronic sequence, the incorrect configuration averaging used for B II, and the neglect of spin-orbit effects (which become important at high-Z) all cast doubt on the reliability of the Kaastra & Mewe data for application to plasma modeling., Comment: 19 pages with 6 figures, AAS TeX, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We have measured the resonance strengths and energies for dielectronic recombination (DR) of Fe XX forming Fe XIX via N=2 --> N'=2 (Delta_N=0) core excitations. We have also calculated the DR resonance strengths and energies using AUTOSTRUCTURE, HULLAC, MCDF, and R-matrix methods, four different state-of-the-art theoretical techniques. On average the theoretical resonance strengths agree to within <~10% with experiment. However, the 1 sigma standard deviation for the ratios of the theoretical-to-experimental resonance strengths is >~30% which is significantly larger than the estimated relative experimental uncertainty of <~10%. This suggests that similar errors exist in the calculated level populations and line emission spectrum of the recombined ion. We confirm that theoretical methods based on inverse-photoionization calculations (e.g., undamped R-matrix methods) will severely overestimate the strength of the DR process unless they include the effects of radiation damping. We also find that the coupling between the DR and radiative recombination (RR) channels is small. We have used our experimental and theoretical results to produce Maxwellian-averaged rate coefficients for Delta_N=0 DR of Fe XX. For kT>~1 eV, which includes the predicted formation temperatures for Fe XX in an optically thin, low-density photoionized plasma with cosmic abundances, our experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement. We have also used our R-matrix results, topped off using AUTOSTRUCTURE for RR into J>=25 levels, to calculate the rate coefficient for RR of Fe XX. Abstract

In photoionized gases with cosmic abundances, dielectronic recombination (DR) proceeds primarily via nlj --> nl'j' core excitations (Dn=0 DR). We have measured the resonance strengths and energies for Fe XVIII to Fe XVII and Fe XIX to Fe XVIII Dn=0 DR. Using our measurements, we have calculated the Fe XVIII and Fe XIX Dn=0 DR DR rate coefficients. Significant discrepancies exist between our inferred rates and those of published calculations. These calculations overestimate the DR rates by factors of ~2 or underestimate it by factors of ~2 to orders of magnitude, but none are in good agreement with our results. Almost all published DR rates for modeling cosmic plasmas are computed using the same theoretical techniques as the above-mentioned calculations. Hence, our measurements call into question all theoretical Dn=0 DR rates used for ionization balance calculations of cosmic plasmas. At temperatures where the Fe XVIII and Fe XIX fractional abundances are predicted to peak in photoionized gases of cosmic abundances, the theoretical rates underestimate the Fe XVIII DR rate by a factor of ~2 and overestimate the Fe XIX DR rate by a factor of ~1.6. We have carried out new multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock and multiconfiguration Breit-Pauli calculations which agree with our measured resonance strengths and rate coefficients to within typically better than <~30%. We provide a fit to our inferred rate coefficients for use in plasma modeling. Using our DR measurements, we infer a factor of ~2 error in the Fe XX through Fe XXIV Dn=0 DR rates. We investigate the effects of this estimated error for the well-known thermal instability of photoionized gas. Abstract

Hybrid laser-arc welding (HLAW) offers significant advantages over other techniques when it come to welding Mg alloys. This work shows that the weld quality of Mg alloy plates depends on the control of the laser-arc heat source as interactions between the laser beam and the arc dominate the laser-arc heat source state. Enhancing interactions between the laser beam and the welding arc take place based on mass and energy exchange between laser-induced plasma and the arc. The connection of the two plasmas changes the discharge state of the welding arc and, thus, makes the most efficient use of heat source energy. This leads to significantly improved welding depth of the HLAW heat source. Laser-arc distance is the key factor dominating the interactions between the two plasmas and we demonstrated that with accurate control of the distance, an enhanced hybrid heat source was be obtained. Abstract

Rate control is an important issue in video streaming applications for both wired and wireless networks. A widely accepted rate control method in wired networks is equation based rate control [1], in which the TCP friendly rate is determined as a function of packet loss rate, round trip time and packet size. This approach, also known as TCP friendly rate control (TFRC), assumes that packet loss in wired networks is primarily due to congestion, and as such is not applicable to wireless networks in which the bulk of packet loss is due to error at the physical layer. In this paper, we propose multiple TFRC connections as an end-to-end rate control solution for wireless video streaming. We show that this approach not only avoids modifications to the network infrastructure or network protocol, but also results in full utilization of the wireless channel. NS-2 simulations, actual experiments over 1 x RTT CDMA wireless data network, and and video streaming simulations using traces from the actual experiments, are carried out to validate, and characterize the performance of our proposed approach.

17. The mixing of liquids by a bubble plume

Abstract

When bubbles are continuously released from a localised source at the bottom of a liquid layer, a bubble plume is produced. As the bubble plume rises due to its buoyancy, it entrains surrounding liquid, which is carried upward with the stream of bubbles. This dissertation investigates the effects of bubble size and density variation in the liquid on bubble plume behaviour and mixing pattern produced in the surrounding environment. The research was divided primarily into two areas. Firstly, the motion of a plume of low-Reynolds number bubbles in a stratified system consisting of two homogeneous layers of different densities was investigated. The liquid environment was of finite lateral extent. A theoretical model for the flow of the bubble plume and the surrounding liquid was developed. The theoretical predictions obtained were compared with new experimental results using plumes of small bubbles generated via electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride and with previous experimental results (McDougall, 1978; Baines and Leitch, 1992). Secondly, a comparative study on the behaviour of a plume of large-Reynolds number bubbles in a stratified environment was carried out. The effect of the bubble size on plume structure and flow pattern was investigated. It was found that the wake transport led to an increase in the density at higher levels in the tank. This was at variance with the mixing induced by a plume of low-Reynolds number bubbles, which did not possess wakes but were more efficient at destratifying the lower regions of the tank (Chen and Cardoso, 2000). Coupling the radial density gradients and the continuous exchange of liquid between the plume and the surrounding environment, a dispersive effect on the density profile in the environment was observed. The experimental results showed that the extents of advection and dispersion in the environment depend on the size of individual bubbles and the degree of stratification in the environment. The theoretical model developed in this work was used to investigate the viability of using bubble plumes to induce mixing in reservoirs of liquefied petroleum gas.

18. Rate control for streaming video over wireless

Abstract

Rate control is an important issue in video streaming applications for both wired and wireless networks. Abstract

Hedgehog (Hh) signaling plays a major role in multiple aspects of embryonic development. A key issue in Hh signaling is to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which a Hh protein morphogen gradient is formed despite its membrane association. In this study, we used a combination of genetic, cellular, and biochemical approaches to address the role of lipid modifications in long-range vertebrate Hh signaling. Our molecular analysis of knockout mice deficient in Skn, the murine homolog of the Drosophila ski gene, which catalyzes Hh palmitoylation, and gene-targeted mice producing a nonpalmitoylated form of Shh indicates that Hh palmitoylation is essential for its activity as well as the generation of a protein gradient in the developing embryos. Furthermore, our biochemical data show that Hh lipid modifications are required for producing a soluble multimeric protein complex, which constitutes the major active component for Hh signaling. These results suggest that soluble Hh multimeric complex travels in the morphogenetic field to activate Hh signaling in distant Hh-responsive cells.

25. Developing a Corpus-Based Paraphrase Tool to Improve EFL Learners' Writing Skills

Abstract

Paraphrasing, or restating information using different words, is critical to successful writing. However, EFL learners have difficulty in making paraphrases to meet their writing demands, and there has been little research on developing automatic reference tools to assist these learners' paraphrasing skills for better writing quality. In this study, we developed PREFER, an online corpus-based paraphrasing assistance system. Allowing multi-word input and returning promptly with a list of paraphrases in English and Chinese, along with usage patterns and example sentences, "PREFER" provides substantial support for EFL learners to vary their expressions during writing. An assessment study of the effectiveness of "PREFER" was conducted with 55 Chinese-speaking EFL college freshmen in an Asian country. The results indicated that "PREFER" offered the most benefits to students' writing performance (with an after-use improvement of 38.2%), compared with an online dictionary and an online thesaurus (-31.6% and -6.2%, respectively). Further investigation revealed that the less proficient, more motivated, and more conservative students showed more significant progress in the paraphrasing task with the help of "PREFER." In the meantime, nearly 90% of the students expressed satisfaction with the paraphrases generated by "PREFER," and its functions, and another 75% of them acknowledged that "PREFER" benefits their writing task.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Adult stem cell senescence and exhaustion are important drivers of organismal age. Restored stem cell self-renewal has revealed novel therapeutic targets for decreasing the incidence of age-associated diseases (AADs) and prolonging the human health span. Transient ectopic expression of the reprogramming factors Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-Myc (collectively known as OSKM) in somatic cells can induce partial cellular reprogramming and effectively ameliorate their age-associated hallmarks. However, how this form of rejuvenation is applied to senescent stem cells remains unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Integrin-α6highCD71high epidermal stem cells (ESCs) with low self-renewal ability were sorted by flow cytometry and then treated by the interrupted reprogramming induced by transient expression of OSKM. The ability of secondary clones’ generation and self-proliferation in vitro, as well as stem cell marker p63, were detected to determine their self-renewal ability. Besides, gene and protein of epidermal cell markers were detected to determine whether their cell identities were retained. Finally, DNA methylation age (eAge) and DNA dehydroxymethylase/methyltransferase were analyzed to explore the alternation of their global DNA methylation pattern during this rejuvenation. RESULTS: The partial reprogramming restored the youthful self-renewal and proliferation in senescent ESCs, including larger secondary clone generation, higher expression of stem cell marker p63 and proliferation marker Ki67, and faster proliferation speed, in each case without abolishing epithelial cellular identity. Moreover, the rejuvenation of adult stem cells could be maintained for 2 weeks after reprogramming factor withdrawal, which was more stable than that of differentiated somatic cells. Additionally, we found that partial reprogramming counteracted the acceleration of eAge in senescent epidermal stem cells and DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) may play a crucial role in this process. In this article, a course on high-frequency wireless communications systems is presented. With the 145-MHz baseband subsystem available from a prerequisite course, the present course emphasizes the design and implementation of the 2.45-GHz front-end subsystem as well as system integration issues. In this curriculum, the 2.45-GHz front-end subsystem includes only the antenna and the low-noise amplifier. Laboratory sessions are an essential part of the course. Successive completion of the laboratories automatically leads students to having a "working" 2.45-GHz wireless communications system. This course is beneficial to students who will pursue a career in wireless communication technology and related fields. (Contains 4 tables and 10 figures.)

Abstract

Previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of stroke - the second leading cause of death worldwide - were conducted predominantly in populations of European ancestry1,2. Here, in cross-ancestry GWAS meta-analyses of 110,182 patients who have had a stroke (five ancestries, 33% non-European) and 1,503,898 control individuals, we identify association signals for stroke and its subtypes at 89 (61 new) independent loci: 60 in primary inverse-variance-weighted analyses and 29 in secondary meta-regression and multitrait analyses. On the basis of internal cross-ancestry validation and an independent follow-up in 89,084 additional cases of stroke (30% non-European) and 1,013,843 control individuals, 87% of the primary stroke risk loci and 60% of the secondary stroke risk loci were replicated (P < 0.05). Effect sizes were highly correlated across ancestries. Cross-ancestry fine-mapping, in silico mutagenesis analysis3, and transcriptome-wide and proteome-wide association analyses revealed putative causal genes (such as SH3PXD2A and FURIN) and variants (such as at GRK5 and NOS3). Using a three-pronged approach4, we provide genetic evidence for putative drug effects, highlighting F11, KLKB1, PROC, GP1BA, LAMC2 and VCAM1 as possible targets, with drugs already under investigation for stroke for F11 and PROC. A polygenic score integrating cross-ancestry and ancestry-specific stroke GWASs with vascular-risk factor GWASs (integrative polygenic scores) strongly predicted ischaemic stroke in populations of European, East Asian and African ancestry5. Stroke genetic risk scores were predictive of ischaemic stroke independent of clinical risk factors in 52,600 clinical-trial participants with cardiometabolic disease. Our results provide insights to inform biology, reveal potential drug targets and derive genetic risk prediction tools across ancestries.
