This study investigates the strong photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray excited optical luminescence observed in nitrogen-functionalized 2D graphene nanoflakes (GNFs:N), which arise from the significantly enhanced density of states in the region of {\pi} states and the gap between {\pi} and {\pi}* states. The increase in the number of the sp2 clusters in the form of pyridine-like N-C, graphite-N-like, and the C=O bonding and the resonant energy transfer from the N and O atoms to the sp2 clusters were found to be responsible for the blue shift and the enhancement of the main PL emission feature. The enhanced PL is strongly related to the induced changes of the electronic structures and bonding properties, which were revealed by the X-ray absorption near-edge structure, X-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonance inelastic X-ray scattering. The study demonstrates that PL emission can be tailored through appropriate tuning of the nitrogen and oxygen contents in GNFs and pave the way for new optoelectronic devices., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures (including toc figure)

This article presents a new optical measurement method employing a HSI (Hue, Saturation and Intensity) colour model to form trapezoidal structured patterns for morphology reconstruction of a measured object at a high speed. Profilometry on objects having non-monochromatic surfaces is considered as one of the remaining most challenges faced by the currently existing structured-light projection methods since the surface reflectivity to red, green and blue light may vary significantly. To address this, an innovative colour calibration method for hue component is developed to determine the accurate reflectivity response of the measured surface. The trapezoidal colour pattern is calibrated to compensate the hue-shifted quantity induced by the reflective characteristics of the object's surface. The developed method can reconstruct precise 3-D surface models from objects by acquiring a single-shot image, which can achieve high-speed profilometry and avoid in-situ potential measurement disturbances such as environmental vibration. To verify the feasibility of the developed methodology, some experiments were conducted to confirm that the measurement accuracy can be controlled within 2.5% of the overall measurement range and the repeatability of 3.0% within +/- 3*sigma can be achieved.

Crystalline Si substrates are studied for pressure induced phase transformation under indentation at room temperature using Berkovich tip. Raman scattering study is used for the identification of the transformed phases. Raman line as well as area mapping are used for locating the phases in the indented region. Calculation of pressure contours in the indented region is used for understanding the phase distribution. We report here a comprehensive study of all the phases of Si, reported so far, leading to possible understanding of material properties useful for possible electromechanical applications. As a major finding, distribution of amorphous phase in the indented region deviates from the conventional wisdom of being in the central region alone. Raman spectroscopic investigations are carried out on one-dimensional nanostructures of InN,such as nanowires and nanobelts synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. In addition to the optical phonons allowed by symmetry; A1, E1 and E2(high) modes, two additional Raman peaks are observed around 528 cm-1 and 560 cm-1 for these nanostructures. Calculations for the frequencies of surface optical (SO) phonon modes in InN nanostructures yield values close to those of the new Raman modes. The mechanism of recrystallization in epitaxial (1000) GaN film, introduced by indentation technique, is probed by lattice dynamic studies using Raman spectroscopy. The recrystallized region is identified by Micro-Raman area mapping. Pop-in bursts in loading lines indicate nucleation of dislocations and climb of dislocations. These processes set in plastic motion of lattice atoms under stress field at the center of indentation for the initiation of recrystallization process. A planar defect migration mechanism is evolved. A pivotal role of vacancy migration is pointed out, for the first time, as the rate limiting factor for the dislocation dynamics initiating the recrystallization process in GaN., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures including Supplements, Accecepted in J. We report recrystallization of epitaxial (epi-) GaN(0001) film under indentation.Hardness value is measured close to 10 GPa, using a Berkovich indenter. Pop-in burst in the loading line indicates nucleation of dislocations setting in plastic motion of lattice atoms under stress field for the recrystallization process. Micro-Raman studies are used to identify the recrystallization process. Raman area mapping indicates the crystallized region. Phonon mode corresponding to E2(high) close to 570 cm-1 in the as-grown epi-GaN is redshifted to stress free value close to 567 cm-1 in the indented region. Evolution of A1(TO) and E1(TO) phonon modes are also reported to signify the recrystallization process., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Strong deformation potential (DP) dominated Raman spectra are reported for quantum confined cubic ZnS nanoclusters under off-resonance conditions allowed only in quantum dots. A flurry of zone boundary phonons is demonstrated in the scattering process. Transverse optic (TO) mode in the multi-phonon process shows only even order overtones suggesting the dominance of a two-phonon process (having large DP value in ZnS) and its integral multiples. Two-phonon TO modes corresponding to A1 and B2 symmetries are also demonstrated under off-resonance conditions which are allowed only in quantum dots., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, Submitted in Journal

InN phase is grown in crystalline InP(100) substrates by 50 keV N+ implantation at an elevated temperature of 400 deg C followed by annealing at 525 deg C in N2 ambient. Crystallographic structural and Raman scattering studies are performed for the characterization of grown phases. Temperature- and power-dependent photoluminescence studies show direct band-to-band transition peak ~1.06 eV at temperatures <=150K. Implantations at an elevated temperature with a low ion beam current and subsequent low temperature annealing step are found responsible for the growth of high-quality InN phase., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Journal

Both hexagonal wurtzite and cubic zinc blend GaN phases were synthesized in GaAs by 50 keV N+ implantation at 400 deg C and subsequent annealing at 900 deg C for 15 min in N2 ambient. Crystallographic structural and Raman scattering studies revealed that GaN phases were grown for fluence above 2x1017 cm-2. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence study showed sharp direct band-to-band transition peak ~3.32 eV at temperature <= 200K. The intermediate bandgap value, with respect to ~3.4 eV for hexagonal and ~3.27 eV for cubic phases of GaN is an indicative for the formation of mixed hexagonal and cubic phases., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figuresn Journal

UV Raman scattering studies show longitudinal optical (LO) mode up to 4th order in wurtzite GaN nanowire system. Frohlich interaction of electron with the long range electrostatic field of ionic bonded GaN gives rise to enhancement in LO phonon modes. Good crystalline quality, as indicated by the crystallographic as well as luminescence studies, is thought to be responsible for this significant observation. Calculated size dependence, incorporating size corrected dielectric constants, of electron-phonon interaction energy agrees well with measured values and also predict stronger interaction energy than that of the bulk for diameter below ~3 nm., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, Journal

Ferromagnetic ordering is reported in the post-annealed samples of Co doped n-GaN formed by Co+ implantation. A maximum Curie temperature ~ 250K is recorded for the sample with 8 atomic percent Co. Particle induced x-ray emission-channeling study confirmed the substitutional Co in Ga lattice site. Local atomic arrangement around magnetic impurities is also analyzed using Raman study. We consider a directed percolation process on an ${\cal M}$ x ${\cal N}$ rectangular lattice whose vertical edges are directed upward with an occupation probability y and horizontal edges directed toward the right with occupation probabilities x and 1 in alternate rows. We deduce a closed-form expression for the percolation probability P(x,y), the probability that one or more directed paths connect the lower-left and upper-right corner sites of the lattice. It is shown that P(x,y) is critical in the aspect ratio $a = {\cal M}/{\cal N}$ at a value $a_c =[1-y^2-x(1-y)^2]/2y^2$ where P(x,y) is discontinuous, and the critical exponent of the correlation length for $a < a_c$ is $\nu=2$., Comment: Figures now included, one reference added

In situ high-pressure energy dispersive x-ray diffraction experiments on polycrystalline powder TiN with NaCl-type structure have been conducted with the pressure up to 30.1 GPa by using the diamond anvil cell instrument with synchrotron radiation at room tempearture. The experimental results suggested that an isostructural phase transition might exist at about 7 GPa as revealed by the discontinuity of V/V0 with pressure., Comment: submitted

We explicitly evaluate the free energy of the random cluster model at its critical point for 0 < q < 4 using an exact result due to Baxter, Temperley and Ashley. It is found that the resulting expression assumes a form which depends on whether $\pi/2\cos^{-1}[\sqrt(q)/2]$ is a rational number, and if it is a rational number whether the denominator is an odd integer. Our consideration leads to new summation identities and, for q = 2, a closed-form evaluation of the integral [1/(4\pi^2)] \int_0^{2\pi}dx \int_0^{2\pi}dy ln[A + B + C - A cos x - B cos y - C cos(x + y)] = -\ln(2S) + (2/\pi)[Ti_2(AS) + Ti_2(BS) + Ti_2(CS)], where A, B, C >=0 and S = 1/\sqrt{AB+BC+CA}., Comment: 15 pages

Photoluminescence study using the 325 nm He-Cd excitation is reported for the Au nanoclusters embedded in SiO2 matrix. Au clusters are grown by ion beam mixing with 100 KeV Ar+ irradiation on Au [40 nm]/SiO2 at various fluences and subsequent annealing at high temperature. The blue bands above ~3 eV match closely with reported values for colloidal Au nanoclusters and supported Au nanoislands. Radiative recombination of sp electrons above Fermi level to occupied d-band holes are assigned for observed luminescence peaks. Peaks at 3.1 eV and 3.4 eV are correlated to energy gaps at the X- and L-symmetry points, respectively, with possible involvement of relaxation mechanism. The blue shift of peak positions at 3.4 eV with decreasing cluster size is reported to be due to the compressive strain in small clusters. A first principle calculation based on density functional theory using the full potential linear augmented plane wave plus local orbitals (FP-LAPW+LO) formalism with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange correlation energy is used to estimate the band gaps at the X- and L-symmetry points by calculating the band structures and joint density of states (JDOS) for different strain values in order to explain the blueshift of ~0.1 eV with decreasing cluster size around L-symmetry point., Comment: 13 pages, 7 Figures Only in PDF format; To be published in J. of Chem. Optical photoluminescence studies are performed in self-ion (Ga+)-implanted nominally doped n-GaN nanowires. A 50-keV Ga+ focused ion beam (FIB) in the fluence range of 1x1014 -2x10^16 ions cm^-2 is used for the irradiation process. A blueshift is observed for the yellow luminescence (YL) band with increasing fluence. Donor-acceptor pair (DAP) model with emission involving shallow donor introduced by point-defect clusters related to nitrogen vacancies and probable deep acceptor created by gallium interstitial clusters is made responsible for the shift. Magnetodynamics in epitaxial Fe1-xCox films on GaAs (100) are studied using time-resolved ferromagnetic resonance, in which the free precession of the magnetization after an impulsive excitation is measured using the polar Kerr effect. The sample is rotated with respect to the static and pulsed field directions, providing a complete mapping of the free energy surface and characteristic relaxation times. The magnetic response can be simulated with a simple coherent rotation model except in the immediate vicinity of switching fields. Bulk and surface anisotropies are identified, and unusual dynamics associated with the coexistence of cubic and uniaxial anisotropies are observed., Comment: PDF - 4 figures

New initiatives to begin Lunar and Martian human surface operations within the next few decades are illustrative of the resurgence of interest in human space exploration. However, as with all exploration, there are risks. The previous manned missions to the Moon highlight a major hazard for future human exploration of the Moon and beyond: surface dust. Not only did the dust cause mechanical and structural integrity issues with the suits, the dust 'storm' generated upon reentrance into the crew cabin caused "lunar hay fever" and "almost blindness.". It was further reported that the allergic response to the dust worsened with each exposure. Due to the prevalence of these high exposures, the Human Research Roadmap developed by NASA identifies the Risk of Adverse Health and Performance Effects of Celestial Dust Exposure as an area of concern.

One of NASA's major concerns with extended human space exploration is the inadvertent and repeated exposure to unknown dust. This highly interdisciplinary study evaluates both the geochemical reactivity (e.g. iron solubility and acellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation) and the relative toxicity (e.g. in vitro and in vivo pulmonary inflammation) of six meteorite samples representing either basalt or regolith breccia on the surface of the Moon, Mars, and Asteroid 4Vesta. Terrestrial mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) is also used for comparison. The MORB demonstrated higher geochemical reactivity than most of the meteorite samples but caused the lowest acute pulmonary inflammation (API). Notably, the two martian meteorites generated some of the highest API but only the basaltic sample is significantly reactive geochemically. Furthermore, while there is a correlation between a meteorite's soluble iron content and its ability to generate acellular ROS, there is no direct correlation between a particle's ability to generate ROS acellularly and its ability to generate API. However, assorted in vivo API markers did demonstrate strong positive correlations with increasing bulk Fenton metal content. In summary, this comprehensive dataset allows for not only the toxicological evaluation of astromaterials but also clarifies important correlations between geochemistry and health.

Due to the prevalence of these high exposures, the Human Research Roadmap developed by NASA identifies the Risk of Adverse Health and Performance Effects of Celestial Dust Exposure as an area of concern [5]. Extended human exploration will further increase the probability of inadvertent and repeated exposures to celestial dusts. Going forward, hazard assessments of celestial dusts will be determined through sample return efforts prior to astronaut deployment. Studies on the lunar highland regolith indicate that the dust is not only respirable but also reactive [2, 6-9], and previous studies concluded that it is moderately toxic; generating a greater response than titanium oxide but a lower response than quartz [6]. The presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the surface of the dust has been implicated. However, there is actually little data related to physicochemical characteristics of particulates and pulmonary toxicity, especially as it relates to celestial dust exposure. As a direct response to this deficit, the present study evaluates the role of a particulate's innate geochemical features (e.g., bulk chemistry, internal composition, morphology, size, and reactivity) in generating adverse toxicological responses in vitro and in vivo. This highly interdisciplinary study evaluates the relative toxicity of six meteorite samples representing either basalt or regolith breccia on the surfaces of the Moon, Mars, and Asteroid 4Vesta (Table 1); three potential candidates for future human exploration or colonization.
