We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven election-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase. We observe a significant shift in the oscillation phase of the even-order harmonics from the spectral interferogram. We reveal that such a modulation feature is linked to the geometric phase acquired in the nonperturbative dynamics of TSSs. Furthermore, we show that the overwhelming Berry phase effect can significantly deform the quantum paths of electron-hole pairs, thus enhancing the ability to harness electron spin using lightwaves in quantum materials with strong spin-orbit interactions., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we investigate resource allocation problem in the context of multiple virtual reality (VR) video flows sharing a certain link, considering specific deadline of each video frame and the impact of different frames on video quality. Firstly, we establish a queuing delay bound estimation model, enabling link node to proactively discard frames that will exceed the deadline. Secondly, we model the importance of different frames based on viewport feature of VR video and encoding method. Accordingly, the frames of each flow are sorted. Then we formulate a problem of minimizing long-term quality loss caused by frame dropping subject to per-flow quality guarantee and bandwidth constraints. Since the frequency of frame dropping and network fluctuation are not on the same time scale, we propose a two-timescale resource allocation scheme. On the long timescale, a queuing theory based resource allocation method is proposed to satisfy quality requirement, utilizing frame queuing delay bound to obtain minimum resource demand for each flow. On the short timescale, in order to quickly fine-tune allocation results to cope with the unstable network state, we propose a low-complexity heuristic algorithm, scheduling available resources based on the importance of frames in each flow. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can efficiently improve quality and fairness of VR video flows under various network conditions.

The dynamic expansion architecture is becoming popular in class incremental learning, mainly due to its advantages in alleviating catastrophic forgetting. However, task confusion is not well assessed within this framework, e.g., the discrepancy between classes of different tasks is not well learned (i.e., inter-task confusion, ITC), and certain priority is still given to the latest class batch (i.e., old-new confusion, ONC). We empirically validate the side effects of the two types of confusion. Meanwhile, a novel solution called Task Correlated Incremental Learning (TCIL) is proposed to encourage discriminative and fair feature utilization across tasks. TCIL performs a multi-level knowledge distillation to propagate knowledge learned from old tasks to the new one. It establishes information flow paths at both feature and logit levels, enabling the learning to be aware of old classes. Besides, attention mechanism and classifier re-scoring are applied to generate more fair classification scores. We conduct extensive experiments on CIFAR100 and ImageNet100 datasets. The results demonstrate that TCIL consistently achieves state-of-the-art accuracy. Identifying and calibrating quantitative dynamical models for physical quantum systems is important for a variety of applications. Here we present a closed-loop Bayesian learning algorithm for estimating multiple unknown parameters in a dynamical model, using optimised experimental "probe" controls and measurement. The estimation algorithm is based on a Bayesian particle filter, and is designed to autonomously choose informationally-optimised probe experiments with which to compare to model predictions. We demonstrate the performance of the algorithm in both simulated calibration tasks and in an experimental single-qubit ion-trap system. Experimentally, we find that with 60x fewer samples, we exceed the precision of conventional calibration methods, delivering an approximately 93x improvement in efficiency (as quantified by the reduction of measurements required to achieve a target residual uncertainty and multiplied by the increase in accuracy). In simulated and experimental demonstrations, we see that successively longer pulses are selected as the posterior uncertainty iteratively decreases, leading to an exponential improvement in the accuracy of model parameters with the number of experimental queries., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

The combination of machine learning and quantum computing has emerged as a promising approach for addressing previously untenable problems. Reservoir computing is an efficient learning paradigm that utilizes nonlinear dynamical systems for temporal information processing, i.e., processing of input sequences to produce output sequences. Here we propose quantum reservoir computing that harnesses complex dissipative quantum dynamics. Our class of quantum reservoirs is universal, in that any nonlinear fading memory map can be approximated arbitrarily closely and uniformly over all inputs by a quantum reservoir from this class. We describe a subclass of the universal class that is readily implementable using quantum gates native to current noisy gate-model quantum computers. Proof-of-principle experiments on remotely accessed cloud-based superconducting quantum computers demonstrate that small and noisy quantum reservoirs can tackle high-order nonlinear temporal tasks. Our theoretical and experimental results pave the path for attractive temporal processing applications of near-term gate-model quantum computers of increasing fidelity but without quantum error correction, signifying the potential of these devices for wider applications including neural modeling, speech recognition and natural language processing, going beyond static classification and regression tasks., Comment: 9 pages main text, 14 pages appendices, 13 figures. Manipulating quantum computing hardware in the presence of imperfect devices and control systems is a central challenge in realizing useful quantum computers. Susceptibility to noise limits the performance and capabilities of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices, as well as any future quantum computing technologies. Fortunately quantum control enables efficient execution of quantum logic operations and algorithms with built-in robustness to errors, without the need for complex logical encoding. In this manuscript we introduce software tools for the application and integration of quantum control in quantum computing research, serving the needs of hardware R&D teams, algorithm developers, and end users. We provide an overview of a set of python-based classical software tools for creating and deploying optimized quantum control solutions at various layers of the quantum computing software stack. We describe a software architecture leveraging both high-performance distributed cloud computation and local custom integration into hardware systems, and explain how key functionality is integrable with other software packages and quantum programming languages. Our presentation includes a detailed mathematical overview of central product features including a flexible optimization toolkit, filter functions for analyzing noise susceptibility in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and new approaches to noise and hardware characterization. Pseudocode is presented in order to elucidate common programming workflows for these tasks, and performance benchmarking is reported for numerically intensive tasks, highlighting the benefits of the selected cloud-compute architecture. Finally, we present a series of case studies demonstrating the application of quantum control solutions using these tools in real experimental settings for both trapped-ion and superconducting quantum computer hardware., Comment: 56 pages, 17 figures

In this paper, a comprehensive software-defined networking (SDN) based transmission protocol (SDTP) is presented for fifth generation (5G) communication networks, where an SDN controller gathers network state information from the physical network to improve data transmission efficiency between end hosts, with in-path packet retransmission. In the SDTP, we first develop a new two-way handshake mechanism for connection establishment between a pair of end host. With the aid of SDN control module, signaling exchanges for establishing E2E connections are migrated to the control plane to improve resource utilization in the data plane. A new SDTP packet header format is designed to support efficient data transmission with in-path packet caching and packet retransmission. Based on the new data packet format, a novel in-path receiver-based packet loss detection and caching-based packet retransmission scheme is proposed to achieve in-path fast recovery of lost packets. In this paper, we develop a theory of learning nonlinear input-output maps with fading memory by dissipative quantum systems, as a quantum counterpart of the theory of approximating such maps using classical dynamical systems. The theory identifies the properties required for a class of dissipative quantum systems to be {\em universal}, in that any input-output map with fading memory can be approximated arbitrarily closely by an element of this class. We then introduce an example class of dissipative quantum systems that is provably universal. Numerical experiments illustrate that with a small number of qubits, this class can achieve comparable performance to classical learning schemes with a large number of tunable parameters. Further numerical analysis suggests that the exponentially increasing Hilbert space presents a potential resource for dissipative quantum systems to surpass classical learning schemes for input-output maps., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. As interest in quantum computing grows, there is a pressing need for standardized API's so that algorithm designers, circuit designers, and physicists can be provided a common reference frame for designing, executing, and optimizing experiments. There is also a need for a language specification that goes beyond gates and allows users to specify the time dynamics of a quantum experiment and recover the time dynamics of the output. In this document we provide a specification for a common interface to backends (simulators and experiments) and a standarized data structure (Qobj --- quantum object) for sending experiments to those backends via Qiskit. Embedded with advanced sensors, cameras and processors, the emerging automated driving vehicles are capable of sensing the environment and conducting automobile operation, paving the way to modern intelligent transportation systems (ITS) with high safety and efficiency. On the other hand, vehicular communication networks (VCNs) connect vehicles, infrastructures, clouds, and all other devices with communication modules, whereby vehicles can obtain local and global information to make intelligent operation decisions. Although the sensing-based automated driving technologies and VCNs have been investigated independently, their interactions and mutual benefits are still underdeveloped. In this article, we argue that VCNs have attractive potentials to enhance the on-board sensing-based automated vehicles from different perspectives, such as driving safety, transportation efficiency, as well as customer experiences. A case study is conducted to demonstrate that the traffic jam can be relieved at intersections with automated driving vehicles coordinated with each other through VCNs. Vehicular communications networks (VANETs) enable information exchange among vehicles, other end devices and public networks, which plays a key role in road safety/infotainment, intelligent transportation system, and self-driving system. As the vehicular connectivity soars, and new on-road mobile applications and technologies emerge, VANETs are generating an ever-increasing amount of data, requiring fast and reliable transmissions through VANETs. On the other hand, a variety of VANETs related data can be analyzed and utilized to improve the performance of VANETs. In this article, we first review the VANETs technologies to efficiently and reliably transmit the big data. Then, the methods employing big data for studying VANETs characteristics and improving VANETs performance are discussed.
