In order to explore the effect of heat shock treatment (HT) on the storage quality of fresh-cut lily bulbs, changes in the quality characteristics of lily bulb slices (Lilium davidii var. unicolor Cotton) exposed to heat shock treatment (hot water at 55 ℃, 2 min) were examined during storage at 4 ℃. The results demonstrated that HT effectively maintained the color of fresh-cut lily bulbs during storage and preserved the cell wall structure. The activities of peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) were suppressed by HT. Meanwhile, the accumulation of total phenolics (TP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) and the increase of relative electric conductivity (REC) were delayed, which led to reduced mass loss, decay rate, and browning degree. Comparison with the control group, the activities of POD, PPO and PAL in the HT group decreased by 95.26%, 21.74% and 41.65%, respectively. The decay rate, browning degree, MDA content, REC and TP content in the HT group were 10.56%, 1.55, 0.13 μmol/g, 19.71% and 3.51 mg/g, respectively, which were all significantly lower than those in the control group (P 0.05). Furthermore, plasma membrane dissolution did not appear in the HT group until the 40th day, which was 30 days later than the control group. Therefore, HT effectively delayed the quality deterioration of fresh-cut lily bulbs during storage and prolonged the storage time.

This study used a cross-lagged design to examine the longitudinal relations between teacher-child conflict and children's problem behavior during the preschool years based on a stratified sample of 515 Chinese preschool children. Children's problem behavior was reported by parents, and teachers rated their levels of conflict with children. Results showed that children's externalizing problems and hyperactivity/inattention had unidirectional effects on teacher-child conflict during some of the time points, supporting the child-driven model. However, teacher-child conflict had unidirectional effects on children's bullying problems, supporting the relationship-driven model. No transactional associations were found between children's behavioral problems and teacher-child conflict. The findings suggest that the nature of the relations between teacher-child conflict and children's problem behavior depends on the specific types of behavior under consideration. To promote Chinese preschool children's social-emotional functioning, teacher preparation and professional development programs should provide teachers with strategies to build quality relationships with children and manage children's problem behavior effectively. Impact Statement: (1) Preschool children's externalizing problems and hyperactivity/inattention had unidirectional effects on teacher-child conflict in a Chinese context; (2) Teacher-child conflict had unidirectional effects on children's bullying problems; and (3) The relations between teacher-child conflict and children's problem behavior vary depending on the specific types of behavior under consideration.

Captive and free-living wildlife serve as significant hosts for Giardia duodenalis. Asiatic black bears, valued for their economic and medicinal importance, are extensively farmed in China and also prevalent in zoos. However, studies on G. duodenalis in these animals in China are limited. Here, 218 feces samples of Asiatic black bears were collected: 36 from a zoo in Heilongjiang Province, and 182 from a farm in Fujian Province. Nested PCR of the SSU rRNA gene, followed by sequencing, was employed to determine the frequency and assemblage distribution of G. duodenalis. Positive samples underwent further analysis through multilocus genotyping (MLG) by amplifying the genes for glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), β-giardin (bg), and triosephosphate isomerase (tpi). Of the 218 samples, G. duodenalis was detected in 22 cases at the SSU rRNA gene locus, including three from Heilongjiang and 19 from Fujian. Three assemblages were identified: A (n = 1), B (n = 16), and E (n = 2) in Fujian; and B (n = 3) in Heilongjiang. Out of the 22 positive samples, 20, 19, and 9 were effectively amplified and sequenced across the tpi, gdh, and bg loci, respectively. Seven samples were genotyped successfully at all three loci, identifying MLG-B1 (n = 1), MLG-B2 (n = 1), and MLG-B3 (n = 1), MLG-B4 (n = 1), MLG-B5 (n = 2), and MLG-B6 (n = 1) as the six assemblage B MLGs. This study marks the first documentation of G. duodenalis in Asiatic black bears in captivity in Fujian and Heilongjiang. The identification of zoonotic assemblages A and B, along with E, underscores potential public health concerns.

Objective: Using Optical coherence tomography (OCT), we evaluated the association between peripapillary retinal nerve fiber, macular thickness, macular ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer, and drug resistance. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, we recruited people diagnosed with epilepsy and healthy controls. People with epilepsy were further stratified as drug‐resistant or non‐drug‐resistant based on their response to anti‐seizure medications. OCT measurements were conducted, and findings in right eye were analyzed. Results: Fifty‐one drug‐resistant participants, 37 non‐drug‐resistant, and 45 controls were enrolled. The average peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer, and macular thickness were thinner in the epilepsy groups than in controls. The drug‐resistant group had significantly lower average ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer thickness (p = 0.004) and a higher proportion of abnormal/borderline GC/IPL thickness (p = 5.40E‐04) than the non‐drug‐resistant group. Nevertheless, no significant differences were seen between the average thickness of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber and macular thickness. The temporal sectors of these three parameters were also significantly thinner in the drug‐resistant group than in the non‐drug‐resistant. In a multivariate regression model, drug resistance was an independent predictor of reduced ganglion cell‐inner plexiform thickness (Odds ratios OR = 10.25, 95% CI 2.82 to 37.28). Increased seizure frequency (r = −0.23, p = 0.039) and a higher number of anti‐seizure medications ever used (r = −0.27, p = 0.013) were negatively associated with ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer thickness. Significance: Individuals with drug‐resistant epilepsy had a consistent reduction in average ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer thickness and the temporal sector of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer and macular thickness. This suggests that ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer thickness could potentially serve as an indicator of the burden of drug resistance, as it correlated with reduced thickness in individuals having more frequent seizures and greater exposure to ASMs. Plain Language Summary: In our study, we used a special tool called OCT to measure how thick the retina is in people with epilepsy and in healthy control. We found that the retina was consistently thinner in all areas for those with epilepsy compared to healthy control. Particularly, a specific layer called the ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer was a lot thinner in the group that didn't respond to medications, and this thinning was related to how often seizures occurred and how much medications were taken. Popular songs, which flourished in late Ming China, were often selected and juxtaposed with play excerpts in multi-register qu anthologies. Their pages were divided into two or three horizontal panels (i.e., registers), each filled with different content and genres, a practice that cultivated innovative modes of editing, printing, and reading. The association of popular songs with the broader dramatic tradition is highlighted not only through their shared tune titles and anthological space, but also via textual circulation and performative discourse. Popular songs represented theatrical plotlines or figures through multiple forms and perspectives, shedding new light on the original plays. Their varied interpretations often corresponded with changing social realities and ethical values that can also be observed in historical records and prescriptive writings throughout the Ming dynasty. Popular songs recapitulating dramatic scenes are often arranged into groups. Their wide circulation in different qu anthologies called for creative editorial strategies such as applying unified structures that belonged to a longestablished oral tradition. Framing devices included, but were not limited to, organizing a group of songs on a fixed chronological topic, such as the "five watches of the night" or the changing position of the moon outside the gauze window over the night. The group of songs, focusing on different dramatic moments and being framed within a unified framework, formed an independent song sequence that transmitted theatrical knowledge and evoked association and discourse among songs sharing similar concerns. The final type of popular song discussed in this article concerns the performers of the plays, most of whom were also singers of popular songs. The tune of Shuahai'er often likened courtesans from different regions to heroines of various plays, exemplifying diverse regional dramatic tastes. The mix of ornate dramatic language with vernacular and even vulgar dictions created an effect of improvised performance in private settings that evoked the aesthetical experience of enjoying theatrical performances and elicited intimate interaction with female performers. The interplay between songs and dramas creates a world of knowledge, entertainment, and connoisseurship that transcends the boundaries of literary composition and oral improvisation, originals and reproductions, as well as performativity and genuineness. Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are ubiquitous cofactors essential to various cellular processes, including mitochondrial respiration, DNA repair, and iron homeostasis. A steadily increasing number of disorders are being associated with disrupted biogenesis of Fe-S clusters. Here, we conducted whole-exome sequencing of patients with optic atrophy and other neurological signs of mitochondriopathy and identified 17 individuals from 13 unrelated families with recessive mutations in FDXR, encoding the mitochondrial membrane-associated flavoprotein ferrodoxin reductase required for electron transport from NADPH to cytochrome P450. In vitro enzymatic assays in patient fibroblast cells showed deficient ferredoxin NADP reductase activity and mitochondrial dysfunction evidenced by low oxygen consumption rates (OCRs), complex activities, ATP production and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS). Such defects were rescued by overexpression of wild-type FDXR. Moreover, we found that mice carrying a spontaneous mutation allelic to the most common mutation found in patients displayed progressive gait abnormalities and vision loss, in addition to biochemical defects consistent with the major clinical features of the disease. Taken together, these data provide the first demonstration that germline, hypomorphic mutations in FDXR cause a novel mitochondriopathy and optic atrophy in humans.
