Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) play key roles in a broad range of biological processes. Numerous strategies have been proposed for predicting PPIs, and among them, graph-based methods have demonstrated promising outcomes owing to the inherent graph structure of PPI networks. This paper reviews various graph-based methodologies, and discusses their applications in PPI prediction. We classify these approaches into two primary groups based on their model structures. The first category employs Graph Neural Networks (GNN) or Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN), while the second category utilizes Graph Attention Networks (GAT), Graph Auto-Encoders and Graph-BERT. We highlight the distinctive methodologies of each approach in managing the graph-structured data inherent in PPI networks and anticipate future research directions in this domain.

Federated learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning approach that protects user data privacy by training models locally on clients and aggregating them on a parameter server. While effective at preserving privacy, FL systems face limitations such as single points of failure, lack of incentives, and inadequate security. To address these challenges, blockchain technology is integrated into FL systems to provide stronger security, fairness, and scalability. However, blockchain-empowered FL (BC-FL) systems introduce additional demands on network, computing, and storage resources. This survey provides a comprehensive review of recent research on BC-FL systems, analyzing the benefits and challenges associated with blockchain integration. We explore why blockchain is applicable to FL, how it can be implemented, and the challenges and existing solutions for its integration. Inferring the types of API elements in incomplete code snippets (e.g., those on Q&A forums) is a prepositive step required to work with the code snippets. Existing type inference methods can be mainly categorized as constraint-based or statistically-based. The former imposes higher requirements on code syntax and often suffers from low recall due to the syntactic limitation of code snippets. The latter relies on the statistical regularities learned from a training corpus and does not take full advantage of the type constraints in code snippets, which may lead to low precision. In this paper, we propose an iterative type inference framework for Java, called iJTyper, by integrating the strengths of both constraint- and statistically-based methods. For a code snippet, iJTyper first applies a constraint-based method and augments the code context with the inferred types of API elements. iJTyper then applies a statistically-based method to the augmented code snippet. The predicted candidate types of API elements are further used to improve the constraint-based method by reducing its pre-built knowledge base. iJTyper iteratively executes both methods and performs code context augmentation and knowledge base reduction until a termination condition is satisfied. Finally, the final inference results are obtained by combining the results of both methods. We evaluated iJTyper on two open-source datasets. Results show that 1) iJTyper achieves high average precision/recall of 97.31% and 92.52% on both datasets; 2) iJTyper significantly improves the recall of two state-of-the-art baselines, SnR and MLMTyper, by at least 7.31% and 27.44%, respectively; and 3) iJTyper improves the average precision/recall of the popular language model, ChatGPT, by 3.25% and 0.51% on both datasets.

A comprehensive understand of the intrinsic piezoelectric anisotropy stemming from diverse chemical and physical factors is a key step for the rational design of highly anisotropic materials. We performed high-throughput calculations on tetragonal ABO3 perovskites to investigate the piezoelectricity and the interplay between lattice, displacement, polarization and elasticity. Among the 123 types of perovskites, the structural tetragonality is naturally divided into two categories: normal tetragonal (c/a ratio < 1.1) and super-tetragonal (c/a ratio > 1.17), exhibiting distinct ferroelectric, elastic, and piezoelectric properties. Charge analysis revealed the mechanisms underlying polarization saturation and piezoelectricity suppression in the super-tetragonal region, which also produces an inherent contradiction between high d33 and large piezoelectric anisotropy ratio |d33/d31|. The polarization axis and elastic softness direction jointly determine the maximum longitudinal piezoelectric response d33 direction. The validity and deficiencies of the widely utilized |d33/d31| ratio for representing piezoelectric anisotropy were reevaluated.

This work studies the parameter identification problem of a generalized non-cooperative game, where each player's cost function is influenced by an observable signal and some unknown parameters. We consider the scenario where equilibrium of the game at some observable signals can be observed with noises, whereas our goal is to identify the unknown parameters with the observed data. Assuming that the observable signals and the corresponding noise-corrupted equilibriums are acquired sequentially, we construct this parameter identification problem as online optimization and introduce a novel online parameter identification algorithm. To be specific, we construct a regularized loss function that balances conservativeness and correctiveness, where the conservativeness term ensures that the new estimates do not deviate significantly from the current estimates, while the correctiveness term is captured by the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. We then prove that when the players' cost functions are linear with respect to the unknown parameters and the learning rate of the online parameter identification algorithm satisfies \mu_k \propto 1/\sqrt{k}, along with other assumptions, the regret bound of the proposed algorithm is O(\sqrt{K}). Finally, we conduct numerical simulations on a Nash-Cournot problem to demonstrate that the performance of the online identification algorithm is comparable to that of the offline setting., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Multimodal sensors provide complementary information to develop accurate machine-learning methods for human activity recognition (HAR), but introduce significantly higher computational load, which reduces efficiency. This paper proposes an efficient multimodal neural architecture for HAR using an RGB camera and inertial measurement units (IMUs) called Multimodal Temporal Segment Attention Network (MMTSA). MMTSA first transforms IMU sensor data into a temporal and structure-preserving gray-scale image using the Gramian Angular Field (GAF), representing the inherent properties of human activities. MMTSA then applies a multimodal sparse sampling method to reduce data redundancy. Lastly, MMTSA adopts an inter-segment attention module for efficient multimodal fusion. Using three well-established public datasets, we evaluated MMTSA's effectiveness and efficiency in HAR. Results show that our method achieves superior performance improvements 11.13% of cross-subject F1-score on the MMAct dataset than the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. The ablation study and analysis suggest that MMTSA's effectiveness in fusing multimodal data for accurate HAR. The efficiency evaluation on an edge device showed that MMTSA achieved significantly better accuracy, lower computational load, and lower inference latency than SOTA methods.
