Abstract

A unique process of chemical oxidation polymerization of aniline using manganese dioxide (MnO2) as the oxidizing agent in an aqueous medium is described. The reaction between aniline and MnO2 follows a mechanism by which the organic monomer is oxidized while the metal oxide undergoes reductive dissolution. The effects of the amount of oxidizing agent and aniline, pH and temperature of the reactive system, type of acid on the yield and conductivity of polyaniline are discussed. The resulting polyaniline was characterized by IR and UV-Vis spectrometry. Polyaniline with a conductivity of 12.5 S/cm was obtained using 0.033 mol of aniline oxidized by 0.023 mol MnO2 in the presence of 100 mL of 2.7 mol/L HCl at 25degreesC for 4 h.

Abstract

This article documents the addition of 396 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Anthocidaris crassispina, Aphis glycines, Argyrosomus regius, Astrocaryum sciophilum, Dasypus novemcinctus, Delomys sublineatus, Dermatemys mawii, Fundulus heteroclitus, Homalaspis plana, Jumellea rossii, Khaya senegalensis, Mugil cephalus, Neoceratitis cyanescens, Phalacrocorax aristotelis, Phytophthora infestans, Piper cordulatum, Pterocarpus indicus, Rana dalmatina, Rosa pulverulenta, Saxifraga oppositifolia, Scomber colias, Semecarpus kathalekanensis, Stichopus monotuberculatus, Striga hermonthica, Tarentola boettgeri and Thermophis baileyi. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Aphis gossypii, Sooretamys angouya, Euryoryzomys russatus, Fundulus notatus, Fundulus olivaceus, Fundulus catenatus, Fundulus majalis, Jumellea fragrans, Jumellea triquetra Jumellea recta, Jumellea stenophylla, Liza richardsonii, Piper marginatum, Piper aequale, Piper darienensis, Piper dilatatum, Rana temporaria, Rana iberica, Rana pyrenaica, Semecarpus anacardium, Semecarpus auriculata, Semecarpus travancorica, Spondias acuminata, Holigarna grahamii, Holigarna beddomii, Mangifera indica, Anacardium occidentale, Tarentola delalandii, Tarentola caboverdianus and Thermophis zhaoermii.

Abstract

In the water-sealed cyclone a catheter-type tube within a water-sealed compartment is attached to the underflow exit; air is thereby prevented from entering and the flow within the hydrocyclone is two-phase rather than three-phase. The transition zone from upward (inside) to downward (outside) flow and the axial velocity profile are altered; these improve the grading accuracy. The applied pressure in the water-sealed box generates a pressure field that allows pressure grading of the underflow, the light particles being forced to the upper end of the tube and discharged with the overflow. Abstract

Computer simulations of Cherenkov glow from spent nuclear fuel were carried out. Spent nuclear fuel in storage ponds are verified with the help of the Cherenkov viewing device (CVD) and the Digital Cherenkov viewing device (DCVD). The instruments image the Cherenkov glow generated by gamma ray emissions from spent fuel into the water. An attempt to build a realistic digital model of the DCVD image containing partial-length, missing, and substituted rods was made to see if the effects of the deviations from normal can be predicted. It was concluded that partial-length or missing rods in the model was in good agreement with measured data, but replaced rods in the model showed a weaker attenuation of the Cherenkov glow than the observed DCVD images.

Abstract

Chromium-substituted aluminophosphates were synthesized and characterized. Chromium-aluminophosphoates (CrAPO-5 and CrAPO-11) catalyze the oxidn. of ethylbenzene, p-ethyltoluene, n-propylbenzene, n-butylbenzene, diphenylmethane, p-ethylanisole, and primary, secondary benzylic alcs. to the corresponding ketones or acids with TBHP at 80-100 DegC. The main parameters affecting reaction rates are competitive adsorption and diffusion. The activity of used CrAPO-5 is completely recovered by recalcination at 500 DegC. Oxidn. of 4-methoxybenzyl alc. gave 4-methoxybenzoic acid (100% conversion of reactant; 87% selectivity toward product).
