Abstract

The mammalian multicopper ferroxidases (MCFs) ceruloplasmin (CP), hephaestin (HEPH) and zyklopen (ZP) comprise a family of conserved enzymes that are essential for body iron homeostasis. Each of these enzymes contains six biosynthetically incorporated copper atoms which act as intermediate electron acceptors, and the oxidation of iron is associated with the four electron reduction of dioxygen to generate two water molecules. CP occurs in both a secreted and GPI-linked (membrane-bound) form, while HEPH and ZP each contain a single C-terminal transmembrane domain. These enzymes function to ensure the efficient oxidation of iron so that it can be effectively released from tissues via the iron export protein ferroportin and subsequently bound to the iron carrier protein transferrin in the blood. CP is particularly important in facilitating iron release from the liver and central nervous system, HEPH is the major MCF in the small intestine and is critical for dietary iron absorption, and ZP is important for normal hair development. CP and HEPH (and possibly ZP) function in multiple tissues. These proteins also play other (non-iron-related) physiological roles, but many of these are ill-defined. In addition to disrupting iron homeostasis, MCF dysfunction perturbs neurological and immune function, alters cancer susceptibility, and causes hair loss, but, despite their importance, how MCFs co-ordinately maintain body iron homeostasis and perform other functions remains incompletely understood.

Abstract

This study examines the state of policing resources in rural areas of central China and investigates how police officers conduct criminal investigations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 police officers who had experience in criminal investigations in rural areas. The study found that police officers have developed a well-established model of criminal investigation that is effective in responding to minor crimes such as theft, drink driving, and fighting. However, there may be compliance issues with the criminal investigation skills of police officers. Additionally, rural areas lack policing resources compared to urban areas and do not have access to necessary police information resources. The results of this study suggest that rural policing in areas where resources are scarce should focus on improving the compliance of criminal investigation skills among police officers and increasing the allocation of police resources to rural areas. Policymakers and practitioners can benefit from the insights provided by this study when addressing the challenges faced by rural policing in China and other countries with similar circumstances.

Abstract

The community-based chronic disease containment in China is still in its infancy, and there is a lack of a complete system for practical implementation with tertiary and secondary or primary hospitals collaboratively involved. We systematically summarized the development of chronic disease management in China, then analyzed the essentials of three major foreign chronic disease management models (chronic care model, innovative care for chronic conditions framework, and chronic disease self-management program) and chronic disease management experiences of Finland, the U.S., Australia, Japan with a focus on management ideas, systematic structures, and operable approaches. With these foreign models and experiences as a reference, we developed a general practice plus compact regional medical consortium-based chronic disease management model used in Lishui Town with complexity science and analysis for resource integration, against the backdrop of promoting the development of the compact county medical consortium and contracted family doctor services. We expect that our study could provide new ideas for the research on chronic disease containment in China's primary care.

Abstract

Fear of childbirth not only brings negative psychological experiences to expectant fathers and affect their ability to prepare for parenthood but can even affect children's emotional and cognitive development. It is essential to identify men with a more severe fear of birth and its related risk factors for the better transition of fathers' role. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of fear of childbirth among Chinese expectant fathers, identify its contributing factors and explore the association among fear of childbirth, resilience and dyadic coping. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the obstetric department of two tertiary hospitals in Wuhan, China. The socio-demographic questionnaire, the father's version of the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire version A (W-DEQ A), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10 (CD-RISC), and the Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI) were used to explore the correlation of fear of childbirth, resilience and dyadic coping of participants. Ultimately, a total of 1176 expectant fathers were included in this study. The prevalence of fear of childbirth was 32.1%. Gestational weeks of pregnant women, monthly income, adverse birth experience, gravidity and parity of pregnant women were considered risk factors for the expectant fathers with fear of childbirth. Furthermore, there was a weak negative correlation between fear of childbirth and resilience and dyadic coping. In conclusion, the prevalence of fear of childbirth in expectant fathers in China was high. Adequate identification of factors influencing the fear of childbirth among expectant fathers is necessary to reduce the fear of childbirth and to develop appropriate interventions in preparing fathers for their new parenting role [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

There is an unmet clinical need for effective anticoagulant therapies for the management of thromboembolic diseases that are not associated with a relevant risk of bleeding. Asundexian (BAY 2433334) is an oral, direct, small‐molecule inhibitor of activated factor XI (FXIa). Phase I data from healthy Caucasian male participants indicated predictable pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) profiles and no clinically relevant bleeding‐related adverse events (AEs). Reported here are data from two phase I, randomized, placebo‐controlled, single‐ and multiple‐dose escalation studies of asundexian conducted in 60 healthy men: 24 Japanese and 36 Chinese. Baseline characteristics were comparable between the treatment groups. All treatment‐emergent AEs were mild, with no serious AEs or AEs of special interest reported. Systemic exposure to asundexian increased dose proportionally after single or multiple dosing, with relatively low accumulation following multiple once‐daily dosing in both Chinese and Japanese volunteers. Asundexian induced dose‐dependent prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time and inhibition of FXIa activity, with no effects on prothrombin time or FXI concentration in Japanese participants. There were no clinically relevant interethnic differences in PK profile across the Japanese, Chinese, and Caucasian (data from the previous phase I study) participants and no clinically relevant difference in PD response between Japanese and Caucasian participants. Abstract

Objectives: Currently, there remains debate regarding the optimal anesthesia approach for patients undergoing intra-arterial therapy for acute ischemic stroke. Therefore, we conducted a comparative analysis to assess the effects of general anesthesia versus non general anesthesia on patient outcomes. Methods: The research methodology entailed comprehensive searches of prominent databases such as the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, covering the period from January 1, 2010, to March 1, 2024. Data synthesis employed techniques like risk ratio or standardized mean difference, along with 95% confidence intervals. The study protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024523079). Results: A total of 27 trials and 12,875 patients were included in this study. The findings indicated that opting for non-general anesthesia significantly decreased the risk of in-hospital mortality (RR, 1.98; 95% CI: 1.50 to 2.61; p<0.00001; I2 = 20%), as well as mortality within three months post-procedure (RR, 1.24; 95% CI: 1.15 to 1.34; p<0.00001; I2 = 26%), while also leading to a shorter hospitalization duration (SMD, 0.24; 95% CI: 0.15 to 0.33; p<0.00001; I2 = 44%). Conclusion: Ischemic stroke patients who undergo intra-arterial treatment without general anesthesia have a lower risk of postoperative adverse events and less short-term neurological damage. In routine and non-emergency situations, non-general anesthetic options may be more suitable for intra-arterial treatment, offering greater benefits to patients. Abstract

The extensive consumption of chicken has resulted in the emergence of a significant environmental issue in the form of chicken feather waste. As such, there is an urgent need for the development of green treatment and recycling methods for chicken feathers. Chicken feathers can serve as a type of heteroatomic doping carbon source, making them an excellent candidate for the electrode materials used in electrochemical energy devices. Furthermore, their unique structures and functional groups make them highly promising for use as adsorbents, electronics, and building materials. In this paper, we provide a summary and review of recent progress made in the use of chicken feathers for energy and environmental applications. Based on the theoretical knowledge and practical applications presented in this review, promising green recycling processes of chicken feathers can be developed.
