8. Social isolation: a key to explain a migrant worker cigarette smoking.

Abstract

Migrant workers in China are experiencing social isolation caused by institutional and non-institutional barriers. This paper explores the relationship between social isolation and migrants' smoking behavior as well as gender differences in smoking. Migrants' social isolation is systematically measured from the structural and qualitative perspective. Using the survey data of 2,188 rural-to-urban migrants in China in 2016, the prevalence of smoking among migrants is 38.21%, with 51.70% for males and 4.06% for females. Migrants with social isolation, such as migration instability, lack of ties with family and fellow migrants, and life dissatisfaction in migrant cities, are more likely to smoke and the impacts vary by gender. The income and price elasticities of cigarette demand show that male migrant smokers are more sensitive to income and price changes than female migrant smokers. Boosting rural migrants' integration into the local community will reduce smoking prevalence, improving the overall health of the society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The theory that man is an integral part of nature, as advocated by Xun Zi an ancient Chinese philosopher, indicates that man and nature are dialectically united. As an integral part of nature, man must survive in certain natural environments. However, at different stages, the environment’s population carrying capacity has a certain equilibrium value. Violation of this value will result in the degradation of environmental quality and/or people’s living conditions. When energy and other resources flow into the economic system, the input-output ratio is an incentive index to measure economic development. After this, they flow back into nature in the form of pollutants. The emission of major pollutants is a binding index to assess economic growth and an index to evaluate the environment’s self-purification capacity.

Abstract

Chemical coprecipitation was used to produce ultrafine yttria-stabilized zirconia powders. The effect of wet-milling on the properties of the powders derived from different processing conditions was investigated. It was shown that the agglomerates in the as-calcined powders were mainly crushed into smaller agglomerates during wet-milling while the aggregate and primary particle sizes were less affected. Wet-milling might be an efficient way to increase the specific surface area of hard agglomerated powders but had little influence on that of soft agglomerated powders. The as-calcined powders were composed of about 95% tetragonal phase, the balance being monoclinic phase. After wet-milling in alcohol for 4 h, some 50% of the tetragonal phase was transformed into monoclinic phase, which resulted in a decrease of the crystal size from 22 nm in as-calcined powders to 17 nm in wet-milled powders. It was also shown that wet-milling might be useful for the improvement of the compactability of as-calcined powders and the sinterability of hard agglomerated powders. For those soft agglomerated powders, it was proved to be unnecessary for wet-milling to be used to improve the powder sinterability.

Abstract

It is show n that 1ms per line scanning speed is possible using conv entional passiv e matrix driv ers. In additio n, there is no optical delay in the switching process. Abstract

The electrochemical behaviour of cathodic Ni reduction was studied by measuring polarisation curves. The effects of total Ni, NH4Cl, NaCl and H3BO3 concentrations in the electrolyte, as well as pH value and temperature, were investigated systematically and the results analysed. Abstract

Thermodynamic studies have indicated that the rise of activity of Cl- in chloride solution could increase the solubility of the sodium jarosite and the iron ions could be decreased in the form of jarosite. High Na2+ concentrations were favourable for jarosite formation and the optimum pH range was 1-3. Results of the kinetics study showed that the apparent activation energy for sodium jarosite formation in chloride solution was 94.66 kJ/mol, indicating that the jarosite precipitation reaction is chemically controlled. Abstract

The phase equilibria of the Mg(NO3)2-MgSO4-H2O system at 343 K and 308 K, and the Mg(NO3)2-MgSO4-C2H5OH-H2O system at 298 K have been studied. According to the phase diagrams obtained, the separation of Mg(NO3)2 from MgSO4 is discussed. The results indicate that evaporation and alcohol crystallisation are both effective in separating pure magnesium sulphate from magnesium nitrate. Futhermore, alcohol crystallisation results in savings on energy. Abstract

OMA1 is an ATP-independent zinc metalloprotease essential for maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and plays a vital role in tumorigenesis. Depending on the type of cancer, a decrease in OMA1 expression has been linked to a varying prognosis for patients. The role of OMA1 in human osteosarcoma (OS), one of the most prevalent malignant bone tumors, remains elusive. Here, we observed elevated OMA1 expression in OS tumor tissues from four patients with advanced OS. Knockout of OMA1 in OS cells significantly reduces OS tumor weight and size, and lung metastatic nodules in BALB/c nude mice. Immunohistochemistry analysis showed a significant decrease in Ki67 and an increase in Cleaved-caspase 3 in OMA1 knockout tumor samples. Mechanistically, we found that OMA1 deficiency increases the levels of PINK1 and Parkin and consequently induces excessive mitophagy, leading to increased apoptosis and reduced cell proliferation and invasion in OS cells. Specifically, OMA1 deficiency reduces the amount of cytosolic p53 and p53-associated cytosolic Parkin but increases mitochondrial p53, which may lead to enhanced apoptosis. Regarding the effect on cell proliferation and invasion, loss of OMA1 reduces mitochondrial ROS levels and increases cytosolic glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) levels, thereby increasing interaction between GSK3β and β-catenin and then reducing cytosolic and nuclear β-catenin. This contributes to reduced cell proliferation and migration in OMA1-deficient cells. Moreover, we found that ciclopirox (CPX), an antifungal drug, induces OMA1 self-cleavage and L-OMA1 degradation in cultured OS cells. CPX also reduces tumor development of control OS cells but not OMA1-deficient OS cells in mice. These findings strongly support the important role of OMA1 in OS tumorigenesis and suggest that OMA1 may be a valuable prognostic marker and a promising therapeutic target for OS., (© 2024. Abstract

Malignant tumors of the hematologic system have a high degree of malignancy and high mortality rates. Chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy has become an important option for patients with relapsed/refractory tumors, showing astonishing therapeutic effects and thus, it has brought new hope to the treatment of malignant tumors of the hematologic system. Despite the significant therapeutic effects of CAR-T, its toxic reactions, such as Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) and Immune Effector Cell-Associated Neurotoxicity Syndrome (ICANS), cannot be ignored since they can cause damage to multiple systems, including the cardiovascular system. We summarize biomarkers related to prediction, diagnosis, therapeutic efficacy, and prognosis, further exploring potential monitoring indicators for toxicity prevention.
