8. International Production and Trade in the IC Industry Based on Complex Network SNA under COVID-19

Abstract

Social network analysis (SNA) is an effective method for characterizing networks from various specific perspectives. Global trade contracted sharply in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and growth is expected to be lower than the pre-pandemic trends. This study takes countries worldwide as the primary unit of analysis and uses different procedures of social network analysis (SNA), including network density, centrality, and core-periphery structure, and applies them to the field of trade in electronic integrated circuit products (ICPT). In addition to static and descriptive analysis, this study also uses of tools such as Ucinet 6.732 for visual analysis, visual analysis, and more convenient and precise display of the network structure of ICPT. The important countries play a central role in determining the overall structural features. The core-periphery structure in the network from both spatial and temporal perspectives, data on electronic integrated circuit products for the period 2015-2021 were used in SNA. This study found that the ICPT network became denser from 2015 to 2021 but declined and picked up in 2018 and 2020. Moreover, the core-peripheral structure exists in the ICPT network. The main core network countries are Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, mainland China, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and other Asian countries, including the United States and Germany.

Abstract

This study investigates the direct, mediation, and interacting effects of externally and internally focused information technology (IT) capabilities and outside-in and inside-out marketing capabilities on customer performance. The relationships are tested using survey data collected from firms in Taiwan. The structural equation modelling (SEM) results show that apart from directly affecting customer performance, externally focused IT and outside-in marketing capabilities indirectly affect customer performance through internally focused IT and inside-out marketing capabilities, respectively. Moreover, the interaction effect of externally focused IT and outside-in marketing capabilities has a significant influence on customer performance, implying that these two capabilities act as complementary resources for a firm. Abstract

We explore the internationalization of Taiwanese manufacturing firms by studying the evolutionary trajectories of their subsidiaries. Building upon the literature, we formulate and apply dimensions capability development and mandate expansion to explain the evolutionary paths of Taiwanese foreign direct investment. Subsidiaries are categorizable into groups from low to high performance: Pure Implementer, Capability Contributor, Mandate Extender and Global Innovator. Using data from Taiwanese firms' foreign expansion, we find that subsidiaries with longer host-country experience and founded by parent firms with higher geographic dispersion are more likely to expand their mandates and/or develop new capabilities, which in turn lead to better subsidiary performance. Abstract

By integrating the liability of foreignness and entry timing literature, this study examines the relationship among local condition (i.e. local density and location bound advantage), entry timing, and foreign subsidiary performance. Our analysis of 1047 foreign subsidiaries from an Asian NIE (Taiwan) in an emerging market (the People's Republic of China) indicate that local density was negatively related to foreign subsidiary performance and the location bound advantage was positively related to foreign subsidiary performance. We further show that these relationships were found to be significantly contingent on timing of subsidiary entry. Our findings highlight the importance of local conditions and entry timing in mitigating liability of foreignness and enhance foreign subsidiary performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

By integrating the international experience and liability of foreignness literature, this study explores the contingencies relating firm's international experience and managerial capability to mitigate the liability of foreignness. Empirical results from a sample of 207 Taiwanese MNCs indicated that exploitative experience and explorative experience both significantly help firms to mitigate liability of foreignness. In addition, this study also found that managerial capability positively moderates the relationship between the experience and liability of foreignness, suggesting the effect is contingent on a firm's capability to deal with the mitigating of foreignness during international expansion.
