With the growing prevalence of neuromorphic computing algorithms, there is a growing need for electronic synaptic devices. In this study, using Li4+ x Ti5O12 (LTO) as the resistive switching layer, C as the lithium ions storage layer, and Li1+ x Al x Ti2− x (PO4)3 (LATP) as ions transmission layer, a synaptic device is designed with the structure of Pt/C/LATP/LTO/PtSi to imitate the lithium-ion battery. Variation of the thickness of the LATP layer in the LTO device is explored to show the impact on the device's synaptic performance. With a LATP thickness of 100 nm, the LTO synaptic device exhibits a high potentiation/depression cyclic stability of over 50 cycles, improved potentiation/depression linearity and smoothness. The synaptic potentiation/depression is ascribed to migration of lithium ions from the LTO layer. A conductance relaxation characteristic of the device is explained by battery self-discharge phenomenon. The battery effect in the LTO device also led to generation of electromotive force. Background: Systemic inflammation stands as a pivotal factor tightly interwoven with the progression of COVID‐19. This study endeavors to elucidate the significance of three key inflammatory molecules, that is, heparin‐binding protein (HBP), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), and C‐reactive protein (CRP), in assessing the severity and prognostic implications of COVID‐19. Methods: The demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were retrospectively collected from a cohort of 214 adult patients diagnosed with COVID‐19. Patients were divided into two groups: nonsevere (n = 93; 43.5%) and severe (n = 121; 56.5%). Additionally, based on their organ function, patients were categorized into nonorgan failure (n = 137) and organ failure (n = 77) groups. The levels of inflammation‐related cytokines were then compared among these defined groups. Results: The severe group was characterized by a higher proportion of males, older age, and longer hospital stays compared to nonsevere cases. Additionally, severe cases exhibited a higher prevalence of underlying diseases and organ failure. Statistical analysis revealed significantly elevated levels of HBP, IL‐6, and CRP in the severe group. HBP, IL‐6, and CRP were identified as independent risk factors for severe COVID‐19. Furthermore, a combined assessment of these biomarkers demonstrated superior diagnostic sensitivity (85.10%) and specificity (95.70%) for predicting COVID‐19 severity. A positive relationship between elevated HBP, IL‐6, and CRP levels and impaired organ function was also observed. The predictive efficiency significantly increased (hazard ratio = 3.631, log‐rank p = 0.003) when two or more of them were combinedly used. Notably, elevated levels of HBP, IL‐6, and CRP were associated with an increased risk of mortality. Conclusions: In conclusion, the combined assessment of HBP, IL‐6, and CRP offers enhanced accuracy and specificity in predicting the severity, organ failure, and mortality risk associated with COVID‐19. LiNbO3 (LNO) is currently intensively studied as an important ferroelectric material. In this work, polycrystalline LNO films were prepared through a sputtering technique, and their ferroelectricity-related resistive switching property was investigated using a device structure of PtSi/SiO2/LNO/Pt. The device exhibits a volatile resistance switching property at lower positive sweeping voltages and a stable bipolar nonvolatile switching property at higher sweeping voltages. The resistive switching mechanism of the device is discussed based on the domain wall conductivity characteristics of the polycrystalline LNO thin films. The PtSi/SiO2/LNO/Pt memristor device has potential applications in memory and artificial neural synapses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) film samples were prepared at different temperatures and annealed through magnetron sputtering technology. The surface morphology, crystal structure, bonding structure, and optical properties of the samples were characterized and analyzed. The surface of the MoS2 films prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering is tightly coupled and well crystallized, the density of the films decreases, and their voids and grain size increase with the increase in deposition temperature. The higher the deposition temperature is, the more stable the MoS2 films deposited will be, and the 200 °C deposition temperature is an inflection point of the film stability. Annealing temperature affects the structure of the films, which is mainly related to sulfur and the growth mechanism of the films. Further research shows that the optical band gaps of the films deposited at different temperatures range from 0.92 eV to 1.15 eV, showing semiconductor bandgap characteristics. The optical band gap of the films deposited at 200 °C is slightly reduced after annealing in the range of 0.71–0.91 eV. After annealing, the optical band gap of the films decreases because of the two exciton peaks generated by the K point in the Brillouin zone of MoS2. The blue shift of the K point in the Brillouin zone causes a certain change in the optical band gap of the films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute viral hepatitis. Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, immunocompromised individuals face an increased risk of HEV and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) co-infection, posing a threat of liver failure and prolonged illness. A 69-year-old male, with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, was co-infected with HEV and SARS-CoV-2. Given the progressive decline in liver function post-admission, steroid therapy was initiated, which led to treatment-related complications. Additionally, the patient experienced an aggravation of COVID-19 symptoms due to persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection, effectively managed through a combination of antiviral medications and corticosteroids. This case describes the intricate clinical trajectory and therapeutic approach for managing HEV and SARS-CoV-2 co-infection, underscoring the potential efficacy of short-term corticosteroid intervention alongside comprehensive antiviral treatment. Hepatic sinus obstruction syndrome (HSOS) is easy to be misdiagnosed or missed, and there is no unified and effective treatment for it. A patient was considered to have Budd-Chiari syndrome. He underwent a transjugular liver biopsy, and pathological examination revealed HSOS without liver cirrhosis. After the failure of anticoagulation therapy, he successfully received a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). After discharge, he was followed-up for four years with a good prognosis. G. segetum-induced HSOS can be easily overlooked, especially in patients with underlying liver diseases. When medical therapy fails, TIPS can control ascites and portal hypertension, and the long-term prognosis is optimistic.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent liver malignancy that can be developed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Numerous pathophysiological alterations, including insulin resistance, specific cytokine release, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial damage, are involved in the transition of NAFLD to cirrhosis and HCC. MicroRNAs, as post-transcriptional modulators, play a critical role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD-related HCC by regulating lipid metabolism, glucose homeostasis, cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and differentiation. Objective: To study the clinical significance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) levels and HBsAg/hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA ratio in relation to liver inflammation in HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB)., Methods: One hundred and fifty-three Chinese patients with chronic HBV infection with HBeAg-positive status were enrolled in the study.Quantitative measurements were made for HBsAg levels by immunoassay (Architect HBsAg QT by Abbott Diagnostic) and HBV DNA by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR.Levels of liver function markers were measured by standard methods.Liver biopsy specimens were obtained from all patients and used to score the histology (liver inflammation) activity index (HAI) and grade (G) the extent of necroinflammation.Statistical correlation analysis was performed to determine the association of HBsAg titre or HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio with the various parameters of liver injury., Results: HBsAg titre and HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio were significantly correlated (r =0.578, P less than 0.0001).A significant positive correlation (r =0.642, P less than 0.0001) was found between HBsAg titre and HBV DNA load, and a significant negative correlation was found between the HAI and HBsAg (r =-0.389, P less than 0.0001) and HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio (r =-0.307, P=0.000l).A significant positive correlation was found between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level and the HAI (r =0.480, P less than 0.0001).Patients with G less than 2 necroinflammation had significantly higher HBsAg titre and HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio than patients with G more than or equal to 2 necroinflammation (both P less than 0.01) but similar levels ofHBV DNA.Generation of a receiver operating characteristic curve using G more than or equal to 2 as the positive index provided the following area under the curve (AUC) values:HBsAg titre, 0.700; HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio, 0.672; ALT level, 0.713.When the random chance AUC was 0.5, all levels of AUC were statistically significant (Pless than 0.001).HBsAg titre (sensitivity =76.92%) was more sensitive than ALT level (sensitivity =76.92%), and HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio (specificity =81.33%) was more specific than ALT level (specificity =81.33%).Youden's index for comprehensive evaluation using ALT was higher than those for HBsAg titre or HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio.When HBsAg and ALT were considered in parallel, the sensitivity increased to 94.08% and specificity rose to 85.60%., Conclusion: HBsAg titre, HBsAg/HBV DNA ratio and ALT levels can be used as the index for judging the degree of liver inflammation in HBeAg-positive CHB patients.Higher sensitivity and specificity are attained when HBsAg and ALT are used in series or parallel.
