Abstract

Mobile edge computing (MEC) enables web data caching in close geographic proximity to end users. Popular data can be cached on edge servers located less than hundreds of meters away from end users. This ensures bounded latency guarantees for various latency-sensitive web applications. However, transmitting a large volume of data out of the cloud onto many geographically-distributed web servers individually can be expensive. In addition, web content dissemination may be interrupted by various intentional and accidental events in the volatile MEC environment, which undermines dissemination efficiency and subsequently incurs extra transmission costs. To tackle the above challenges, we present a novel scheme named EdgeDis that coordinates data dissemination by distributed consensus among those servers. We analyze EdgeDis's validity theoretically and evaluate its performance experimentally. Results demonstrate that compared with baseline and state-of-the-art schemes, EdgeDis: 1) is 5.97x - 7.52x faster; 2) reduces dissemination costs by 48.21% to 91.87%; and 3) reduces performance loss caused by dissemination failures by up to 97.30% in time and 96.35% in costs.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a chronic metabolic disease caused by an imbalance between carbohydrate intake and metabolism, is one of the most difficult metabolic diseases to treat worldwide. The main symptoms of T2DM include hyperglycemia, insufficient insulin secretion, insulin resistance, polydipsia and polyuria. T2DM is often accompanied by many complications such as atherosclerosis, renal function injury and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a polypeptide composed of 31 amino acids, which is mainly used to maintain glucose homeostasis in vivo and relieve T2DM. However, its half-life is short and it is easily degraded in vivo. This article introduces probiotics and their metabolites that regulate GLP-1 in the host, and also discusses the alleviative effect of GLP-1 on T2DM, including the association between GLP-1 and T2DM, the clinical application of metformin and GLP-1 agonists, the insufficiency of GLP-1 in alleviating T2DM and the regulation of the GLP-1 content by related prebiotics. Finally, the regulatory mechanisms of probiotics and their metabolites on GLP-1, including short-chain fatty acids, bile acids (BAs), tryptophan and its derivatives and extracellular polysaccharides, are summarized in order to provide some references for studies on the regulatory effects of probiotics and their metabolites on GLP-1 production and release in the host as well as their alleviative effects on T2DM.

Abstract

A general and relatively simple method for construction of multivariate goodness-of-fit tests is introduced. The proposed test is applied to elliptical distributions. The method is based on a characterization of probability distributions via their characteristic function. The consistency and other limit properties of the new test statistics are studied. Also in a simulation study the proposed tests are compared with earlier as well as more recent competitors.

23. A Ten-Year Bibliometric Analysis of E-Learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Context

Abstract

This bibliometric study offers a comprehensive overview of e-learning research landscape in English as a foreign language (EFL) context, including the publication trend, country contributions and collaboration, productive authors and journals, and key topics of interest. Through a thorough review of 602 documents extracted from the Scopus database from 2013-2022 using VOSviewer, Excel, and Tableau, the study reveals a significant increase in e-learning publications since 2020, with China, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia emerging as the leading contributors and collaborators. The study further identifies the most productive authors and journals and highlights six key topics, including the effectiveness of e-learning, learners' perceptions, mobile learning, e-education during COVID-19, Chinese EFL teachers, and teacher education. The study provides innovative insights for EFL practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, and contributes to the general knowledge about the hotspots and frontiers of literature in the e-learning landscape of the EFL context.

32. Carrier Phase Ranging for Indoor Positioning with 5G NR Signals

Abstract

Indoor positioning is one of the core technologies of Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), and is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming era of AI. However, affected by the complexity of indoor environments, it is still highly challenging to achieve continuous and reliable indoor positioning. Currently, 5G cellular networks are being deployed worldwide, the new technologies of which have brought the approaches for improving the performance of wireless indoor positioning. In this paper, we investigate the indoor positioning under the 5G new radio (NR), which has been standardized and being commercially operated in massive markets. Specifically, a solution is proposed and a software defined receiver (SDR) is developed for indoor positioning. With our SDR indoor positioning system, the 5G NR signals are firstly sampled by universal software radio peripheral (USRP), and then, coarse synchronization is achieved via detecting the start of the synchronization signal block (SSB). Then, with the assistance of the pilots transmitted on the physical broadcasting channel (PBCH), multipath acquisition and delay tracking are sequentially carried out to estimate the time of arrival (ToA) of received signals. Furthermore, to improve the ToA ranging accuracy, the carrier phase of the first arrived path is estimated. Finally, to quantify the accuracy of our ToA estimation method, indoor field tests are carried out in an office environment, where a 5G NR base station (known as gNB) is installed for commercial use. Our test results show that, in the static test scenarios, the ToA accuracy measured by the 1-{\sigma} error interval is about 0.5 m, while in the pedestrian mobile environment, the probability of range accuracy within 0.8 m is 95%., Comment: 13 pages

Abstract

We propose three test criteria each of which is appropriate for testing, respectively, the equivalence hypotheses of symmetry, of homogeneity, and of independence, with multivariate data. All quantities have the common feature of involving weighted--type distances between characteristic functions and are convenient from the computational point of view if the weight function is properly chosen. The asymptotic behavior of the tests under the null hypothesis is investigated, and numerical studies are conducted in order to examine the performance of the criteria in finite samples.

Abstract

Internet finance, a byproduct of the close coupling of Internet technology with the financial sector, has contributed significantly to the growth of local economies. This essay first examines the relationship between regional economic growth and online financing. Second, the constraint mechanism between Internet finance and local economic growth is examined using the efficacy function of the coupling degree evaluation model. The consistency of the spillover impact of the Internet finance cluster on the economic growth of the region and the surrounding areas is examined using the spatial effect decomposition. In 2021, the Moran indices of W1, W2, and W3 were 0.418, 0.123, and 0.341, respectively. The correlation between Internet financing and local economic growth is strengthened, while the influence factor of economic and geographical distance is reduced.
