11. A Concept Mapping-Based Prediction-Observation-Explanation Approach to Promoting Students' Flipped Learning Achievements and Perceptions

Abstract

Previous research has illustrated the potential of flipped learning for assisting teachers in designing meaningful activities to promote students' higher order thinking skills; however, several previous studies have challenged the effects of flipped learning on students' learning. One of the key problems is the lack of an effective learning approach or tools to engage students in the flipped learning activity. In this study, a concept mapping-based Prediction-Observation-Explanation (POE) approach was incorporated into flipped learning (called CPOE-FL) to enhance students' scientific learning. Furthermore, a three-group experiment was conducted to assess the effects of the three flipped learning models, comprising the CPOE-FL approach, the POE-FL (incorporating POE into flipped learning) approach, and the C-FL (conventional flipped learning) approach. The experimental results displayed that the CPOE-FL approach can benefit the learning achievements and self-efficacy of the students with respectively lower prior knowledge and lower initial self-efficacy, in comparison with the POE-FL and C-FL approaches. Both the CPOE-FL and POE-FL approaches promoted the students' inner learning motivation, while the CPOE-FL approach enhanced the students' critical thinking. This proposed approach could provide a good reference for researchers or school teachers intending to implement POE-based flipped learning in the future.

14. Oscillatory and tip-splitting instabilities in 2D dynamic fracture: The roles of intrinsic material length and time scales

Abstract

Recent theoretical and computational progress has led to unprecedented understanding of symmetry-breaking instabilities in 2D dynamic fracture. At the heart of this progress resides the identification of two intrinsic, near crack tip length scales -- a nonlinear elastic length scale $\ell$ and a dissipation length scale $\xi$ -- that do not exist in the classical theory of cracks. In particular, it has been shown that at a high propagation velocity $v$, cracks in 2D brittle materials undergo an oscillatory instability whose wavelength varies linearly with $\ell$, and at yet higher propagation velocities and larger loading levels, a tip-splitting instability emerges, both in agreements with experiments. In this paper, using phase-field models of brittle fracture, we demonstrate the following properties of the oscillatory instability: (i) It exists also in the absence of near-tip elastic nonlinearity, i.e. in the limit $\ell\!\to\!0$, with a wavelength determined by the dissipation length scale $\xi$. This result shows that the instability crucially depends on the existence of an intrinsic length scale associated with the breakdown of linear elasticity near crack tips, independently of whether the latter is related to nonlinear elasticity or to dissipation. (ii) It is a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, featuring a vanishing oscillations amplitude at onset. (iii) It is largely independent of the fracture energy $\Gamma(v)$ that is controlled by a dissipation time scale. These results substantiate the universal nature of the oscillatory instability of ultra-high speed cracks in 2D. In addition, we provide evidence indicating that the ultra-high velocity tip-splitting instability is controlled by the limiting rate of elastic energy transport inside the crack tip region. 20. Influences of Integrating Dynamic Assessment into a Speech Recognition Learning Design to Support Students' English Speaking Skills, Learning Anxiety and Cognitive Load

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been progressively utilized in educational environments in recent years, due to the advances in computing and information processing techniques. The automatic speech recognition technique (ASR) provides students with instantaneous feedback and interactive oral practice for supporting a context with self-paced learning. Corrective feedback (CF) should be combined with ASR-based systems to enhance students' speaking performance, and to reduce their cognitive load. However, learners' perceptions of CF are mixed, and CF might give rise to learning anxiety. In this study, a dynamic assessment-based speech recognition (called DA-SR) learning system was designed to facilitate students' English speaking. Moreover, a quasi-experiment was implemented to evaluate the effects of the proposed approach on students' speaking learning effectiveness, via respectively providing the DA-SR and the corrective feedback-based speech recognition (called CF-SR) approaches for the experimental and control groups. The experimental results revealed that both the DA-SR group and the CF-SR group can effectively improve the students' English speaking skills, and decrease their English speaking learning anxiety. Moreover, this study further demonstrated that the DA-SR approach successfully reduced students' English class performance anxiety, and extraneous cognitive load in comparison with the CF-SR approach. It could be a valuable reference for designing English speaking learning activities in EFL learning environments.

25. Universality and stability phase-diagram of two-dimensional brittle fracture

Abstract

The two-dimensional oscillatory crack instability, experimentally observed in a class of brittle materials under strongly dynamic conditions, has been recently reproduced by a nonlinear phase-field fracture theory. Here we highlight the universal character of this instability by showing that it is present in materials exhibiting widely different near crack tip elastic nonlinearity, and by demonstrating that the oscillations wavelength follows a universal master curve in terms of dissipation-related and nonlinear elastic intrinsic length scales. Moreover, we show that upon increasing the driving force for fracture, a high-velocity tip-splitting instability emerges, as experimentally demonstrated. 28. Impacts of Augmented Reality and a Digital Game on Students' Science Learning with Reflection Prompts in Multimedia Learning

Abstract

Although a great deal of research has evidenced the effects of proper instructional design on multimedia learning, most has focused on the cognitive aspects of learning, with little concern about the role of affective-motivational states in multimedia learning. In this study, an AR game-based learning method was designed via integrating AR technology and a digital game for assisting students' learning, and for probing the factors of metacognitive and motivational factors of multimedia learning. A context-aware mobile learning system with reflection prompts was developed based on the implemented approach. Furthermore, a 2 × 2 experiment was conducted to identify the impacts of the implemented approach on elementary school science learning. Four groups learned with different media mechanisms (i.e., AR or Non-AR) and gaming mechanisms (i.e., Game or Non-game) during an elementary school field trip. The research results displayed that interaction between the AR and game approaches did not exist, and both significantly promoted the students' learning motivation; however, only the game approach significantly improved the students' learning achievements and flow states. This study evidenced the significance of flow state in a reflective context in multimedia learning. Such a result also stresses that digital games play an important role in promoting affective-motivational states in multimedia learning.

30. Instability in dynamic fracture and the failure of the classical theory of cracks

Abstract

Cracks, the major vehicle for material failure, tend to accelerate to high velocities in brittle materials. In three-dimensions, cracks generically undergo a micro-branching instability at about 40% of their sonic limiting velocity. Recent experiments showed that in sufficiently thin systems cracks unprecedentedly accelerate to nearly their limiting velocity without micro-branching, until they undergo an oscillatory instability. Despite their fundamental importance and apparent similarities to other instabilities in condensed-matter physics and materials science, these dynamic fracture instabilities remain poorly understood. They are not described by the classical theory of cracks, which assumes that linear elasticity is valid inside a stressed material and uses an extraneous local symmetry criterion to predict crack paths. Here we develop a model of two-dimensional dynamic brittle fracture capable of predicting arbitrary paths of ultra-high-speed cracks in the presence of elastic nonlinearity without extraneous criteria. We show, by extensive computations, that cracks undergo a dynamic oscillatory instability controlled by small-scale elastic nonlinearity near the crack tip. This instability occurs above a ultra-high critical velocity and features an intrinsic wavelength that increases proportionally to the ratio of the fracture energy to an elastic modulus, in quantitative agreement with experiments. This ratio emerges as a fundamental scaling length assumed to play no role in the classical theory of cracks, but shown here to strongly influence crack dynamics. Those results pave the way for resolving other long-standing puzzles in the failure of materials.

Abstract

Virtual contexts play a crucial role in assisting students' learning. Researchers have taken advantage of the potential of immersive virtual reality (VR) for situating students in inaccessible places, and for engaging them in learning activities. Meanwhile, several previous studies have reported that, in VR‐based learning contexts, students' perception of immersion and learning motivation could be low owing to the lack of clear objectives and problem‐solving scenarios. On the other hand, digital game‐based learning is capable of enhancing students' engagement in a task. In this study, we designed a learning approach (namely RPG‐VR) by means of integrating a role‐playing game with VR technology to enhance students' science learning. Furthermore, a quasi‐experiment was conducted to evaluate the students' learning effectiveness via, respectively, providing the RPG‐VR learning approach and the conventional VR (called C‐VR) learning approach for the experimental and control groups. The experimental results indicated that this approach significantly enhanced the students' perceptions of immersion, self‐efficacy and extrinsic learning motivation, in comparison with the C‐VR learning approach. Specifically, students who learned with the RPG‐VR learning approach perceived more immersion in the engagement and the total immersion stages. This study contributes to existing knowledge of VR technology by providing that a digital role‐playing game could reinforce the main characteristics of VR‐based learning environments and enhance students' concentration on a learning task. However, no significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of promoting students' learning achievements, implying that more instructional assistance is needed to improve students' knowledge gains in VR‐based learning environments. 33. AR Videos as Scaffolding to Foster Students' Learning Achievements and Motivation in EFL Learning

Abstract

Augmented reality (AR) is capable of providing students with proper situated scaffolding via overlaying rich media objects on the real-world learning context. This paper examines the potential of AR to address existing problems with insufficient scaffolding in video learning materials for English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. Thus, an AR video-enhanced learning (ARVEL) method was designed to assist students' EFL learning. Furthermore, an experiment was carried out to investigate the influences of the implemented method on students' EFL learning outcomes. The experimental results displayed that the ARVEL method significantly improved the students' learning achievements and intrinsic motivation, and enhanced their satisfaction with EFL learning, compared to the students learning EFL with conventional video-based learning.

Abstract

A planar crack generically segments into an array of "daughter cracks" shaped as tilted facets when loaded with both a tensile stress normal to the crack plane (mode I) and a shear stress parallel to the crack front (mode III). We investigate facet propagation and coarsening using in-situ microscopy observations of fracture surfaces at different stages of quasi-static mixed-mode crack propagation and phase-field simulations. The results demonstrate that the bifurcation from propagating planar to segmented crack front is strongly subcritical, reconciling previous theoretical predictions of linear stability analysis with experimental observations. They further show that facet coarsening is a self- similar process driven by a spatial period-doubling instability of facet arrays with a growth rate dependent on mode mixity. Those results have important implications for understanding the failure of a wide range of materials.
