- Abstract
To unlock the full potential of laser-cooled silica optical fibers, a better understanding of the internal mechanisms of heat generation is required. This work explores ytterbium-doped aluminosilicate fibers produced via industry-standard modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) techniques with varied levels of divalent ytterbium to determine their effect on anti-Stokes fluorescence thermal performance. The inclusion of Yb2+ is shown to have a significant negative impact on cooling potential. Yb2+ ions are shown to correlate with heat generation by two distinct mechanisms, absorption and quenching of active Yb3+ ions. This excess heating represents a reduction in quantum efficiency that is detrimental to Yb-doped fiber lasers and amplifiers beyond the laser-cooling application.

This study investigates the strong photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray excited optical luminescence observed in nitrogen-functionalized 2D graphene nanoflakes (GNFs:N), which arise from the significantly enhanced density of states in the region of {\pi} states and the gap between {\pi} and {\pi}* states. The increase in the number of the sp2 clusters in the form of pyridine-like N-C, graphite-N-like, and the C=O bonding and the resonant energy transfer from the N and O atoms to the sp2 clusters were found to be responsible for the blue shift and the enhancement of the main PL emission feature. The enhanced PL is strongly related to the induced changes of the electronic structures and bonding properties, which were revealed by the X-ray absorption near-edge structure, X-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonance inelastic X-ray scattering. The study demonstrates that PL emission can be tailored through appropriate tuning of the nitrogen and oxygen contents in GNFs and pave the way for new optoelectronic devices., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures (including toc figure)

KPD 1930+2752 is a short-period pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) star. It is also an ellipsoidal variable with a known binary period just over two hours. The companion is most likely a white dwarf and the total mass of the system is close to the Chandresakhar limit. In this paper we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope (WET) photometric observations during 2003 and a smaller multisite campaign from 2002. From 355 hours of WET data, we detect 68 pulsation frequencies and suggest an additional 13 frequencies within a crowded and complex temporal spectrum between 3065 and 6343 $\mu$Hz (periods between 326 and 157 s). We examine pulsation properties including phase and amplitude stability in an attempt to understand the nature of the pulsation mechanism. We examine a stochastic mechanism by comparing amplitude variations with simulated stochastic data. We also use the binary nature of KPD 1930+2752 for identifying pulsation modes via multiplet structure and a tidally-induced pulsation geometry. Our results indicate a complicated pulsation structure that includes short-period ($\approx 16$ h) amplitude variability, rotationally split modes, tidally-induced modes, and some pulsations which are geometrically limited on the sdB star., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, 11 tables. We report on the analysis of 436.1 hrs of nearly continuous high-speed photometry on the pulsating DB white dwarf GD358 acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) during the 2006 international observing run, designated XCOV25. The Fourier transform (FT) of the light curve contains power between 1000 to 4000 microHz, with the dominant peak at 1234 microHz. We find 27 independent frequencies distributed in 10 modes, as well as numerous combination frequencies. Our discussion focuses on a new asteroseismological analysis of GD358, incorporating the 2006 data set and drawing on 24 years of archival observations. Our results reveal that, while the general frequency locations of the identified modes are consistent throughout the years, the multiplet structure is complex and cannot be interpreted simply as l=1 modes in the limit of slow rotation. The high k multiplets exhibit significant variability in structure, amplitude and frequency. Any identification of the m components for the high k multiplets is highly suspect. The k=9 and 8 modes typically do show triplet structure more consistent with theoretical expectations. The frequencies and amplitudes exhibit some variability, but much less than the high k modes. Analysis of the k=9 and 8 multiplet splittings from 1990 to 2008 reveal a long-term change in multiplet splittings coinciding with the 1996 "sforzando" event, where GD358 dramatically altered its pulsation characteristics on a timescale of hours. We explore potential implications, including the possible connections between convection and/or magnetic fields and pulsations. Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 - 420 nm. System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen laser beam. We present follow-up observations of pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) stars as part of our efforts to resolve the pulsation spectra for use in asteroseismological analyses. This paper reports on multisite campaigns of the pulsating sdB stars PG 1618+563B and PG 0048+091. Data were obtained from observatories placed around the globe for coverage from all longitudes. For PG 1618+563B, our five-site campaign uncovered a dichotomy of pulsation states: Early during the campaign the amplitudes and phases (and perhaps frequencies) were quite variable while data obtained late in the campaign were able to fully resolve five stable pulsation frequencies. For PG 0048+091, our five-site campaign uncovered a plethora of frequencies with short pulsation lifetimes. We find them to have observed properties consistent with stochastically excited oscillations, an unexpected result for subdwarf B stars. We discuss our findings and their impact on subdwarf B asteroseismology., Comment: 50 pages including 17 figures and 10 tables. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Multi-wavelength B, V, R, I observations of the optical afterglow of GRB 050319 were performed by the 1.05-m telescope at Kiso Observatory and the 1.0-m telescope at Lulin Observatory from 1.31 hours to 9.92 hours after the burst. Our R band lightcurves, combined with other published data, can be described by the smooth broken power-law function, with $\alpha_1$ = -0.84 $\pm$0.02 to $\alpha_2$ = -0.48$\pm$0.03, 0.04 days after the GRB. The optical lightcurves are characterized by shallow decays-- as was also observed in the X-rays-- which may have a similar origin, related to energy injection. However, our observations indicate that there is still a puzzle concerning the chromatic breaks in the R band lightcurve (at 0.04 days) and the X-ray lightcurve (at 0.004 days) that remains to be solved., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, accpeted for publication in ApJL

We analyzed the shapes of Galactic open clusters by the star counting technique with the 2MASS star catalog database. Morphological parameters such as the ellipticity and size have been derived via stellar density distribution, weighed by clustering probability. We find that most star clusters are elongated, even for the youngest star clusters of a few million years old, which are located near to the Galactic disk. The shapes of young star clusters must reflect the conditions in the parental molecular clouds and during the cluster formation process. As an open cluster ages, stellar dynamics cause the inner part of the cluster to circularize, but the overall radius gets larger and the stellar density becomes sparser. 12. The Effect of Thermal Reduction on the Photoluminescence and Electronic Structures of Graphene Oxides

Electronic structures of graphene oxide (GO) and hydro-thermally reduced graphene oxides (rGOs) processed at low temperatures (120-180°C) were studied using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). C K-edge XANES spectra of rGOs reveal that thermal reduction restores C = C sp(2) bonds and removes some of the oxygen and hydroxyl groups of GO, which initiates the evolution of carbonaceous species. The combination of C K-edge XANES and Kα XES spectra shows that the overlapping π and π* orbitals in rGOs and GO are similar to that of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), which has no band-gap. C Kα RIXS spectra provide evidence that thermal reduction changes the density of states (DOSs) that is generated in the π-region and/or in the gap between the π and π* levels of the GO and rGOs. Two-dimensional C Kα RIXS mapping of the heavy reduction of rGOs further confirms that the residual oxygen and/or oxygen-containing functional groups modify the π and σ features, which are dispersed by the photon excitation energy. The dispersion behavior near the K point is approximately linear and differs from the parabolic-like dispersion observed in HOPG.

The physiological functions of erythrocytes depend critically on their morphology, deformability, and aggregation capability in response to external physical and chemical stimuli. The dynamic deformability can be described in terms of their viscoelasticity. We applied jumping optical tweezers to trap and stretch individual red blood cells (RBCs) to characterize its viscoelasticity in terms of the Young's modulus and viscosity by analyzing the experimental data of dynamic deformation using a 2-parameter Kelvin solid model. The effects of three chemical agents (N -ethylmaleimide, Chymotrypsin, and Hydrogen peroxide) on RBC's mechanical properties were studied by comparing the Young's modulus and viscosity of RBCs with and without these chemical treatments. Although the effects of each of these chemicals on the molecular structures of RBC may not be exclusive, based on the dominant effect of each chemical, we attempted to dissect the main contributions of different constituents of the RBC membrane to its viscosity and elasticity. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Choledochal cysts (CC) are congenital biliary tract dilatations. Infantile CC (IFCC) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants is rare. This is a case of a huge IFCC presented in VLBW preterm infant managed with external biliary drainage prior to definitive treatment. Electrolyte imbalance, poor weight gain, and infections were managed during external biliary drainage maintenance. Choledochal cyst excision and Roux-en-Y hepaticoenterostomy were successfully performed when the infant weighed 4.9 kg 5 months later. Delayed definitive treatment with external biliary drainage could be a feasible alternative for managing CC in low-birth-weight infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

21. Electronic structures of diamond-like carbons

In this thesis, the theoretical electronic structures of diamond-like amorphous carbons (DLC) are studied using the total energy code "Fast Structure" based on local orbitals, Harris functional and local density approximation (LDA) molecular dynamics simulations. The carbon atom can exhibit different bonding configurations including sp3, sp2 and sp1 hybridizations. Firstly, the structural trend of the amorphous carbon (a-C) shows an increasing sp3 fraction with the increase of mass densities. The existence of both sp3 and sp2 sites in a-C accentuates the band-tailing process with σ and π bonding. The smaller band gap found in the DLC is mainly due to the distortions of π-bonded clusters. The large distortions of π dihedral angles cause the entire π band to be localized. The localization of π states causes the mobility gap to exceed the optical gap, which accounts for the low carrier mobility and the flat photoluminescence excitation spectrum. The stabilities of various nitrogen doping configurations in a-C are also studied. At low N contents, N dopants exhibit σ bonding and are in favour of forming non-doping trivalent coordination N03 sites. At high N contents, the non-doping π-bonded sites are preferred. These results account for the low doping efficiency in a-C. Surface properties of the a-C structures show the formation of the sp2-rich surface layers compared to the predominant sp3 regions. These structures are further applied to the study of defect formation energies for vacancies and interstitials in the near surface region. The considerably low defect formation energy found in a-C supports the possibility of deposition mechanism described by the subplantation model.

- Abstract
This study presents a new landslide monitoring system, which is designed to be cost-effective, robust, flexible, and scalable, aiming for long-term and real-time monitoring and large-scale deployment in harsh and remote environments. This wireless monitoring system consists of the hybrid sensor node (including the GNSS receiver and MEMS accelerometer), the GNSS antenna, the power supply system, and the data center with a big-data infrastructure. The system was deployed at Songmao and Lushan landslide-prone sites, Taiwan, and its effectiveness was also examined through monitoring real landslide events. It was found that continuous monitoring, combining displacement and vibration data, enables us to see how and when the landslide is triggered by the rainfall, together with the potential sliding direction, and the associated aftermath behavior, even after the rainfall stops. The entire landslide movement, from initiation to the subsequent continuous movement, can be captured in detail through the DGNSS analyses. The potential landslide direction is derived based on the directivity from the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) analyses on the seismic measurements by the 3-axis accelerometers. The monitoring results also agree with other measurements from the borehole inclinometer/extensometer and total station. At these two sites, the groundwater level exhibited a distinct time lag in rising after the rainfall started and the subsequent sudden increase triggered the landslides. On the contrary, the drawdown of the groundwater level was relatively slow, which is due to the anisotropic permeability of the slate, and therefore promotes the continued slope movement even after the rainfall ceased. Water-softening on the slate along the sliding surface, which was just fractured by landslide movement, could be one of the associated underlying mechanisms.

For applications such as laser cooling of doped fibers, where it is critical to measure accurately the temperature of a cooled fiber that is very close to room temperature, it is paramount to develop a reliable, very short (mm) fiber temperature sensor with millikelvin resolution and very little drift. We report a second generation of a unique slow-light fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensor that meets these stringent requirements. Experiments and modeling establish that its temperature response depends only on well-known material constants of the silica FBG and the response of the probe laser's wavelength controller. The response is independent of the linewidth of the slow-light resonance, hence different FBGs and/or resonances have the exact same response. Examples of measured cooling in optically pumped Yb-doped fibers show that more reliable thermal contact with the cooled fiber is obtained by wrapping the FBG and the cooled fiber.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of diurnal and seasonal variations in photon flux density (PPFD) and air temperature on PSII efficiency in three sweet potato leaf-color cultivars: green (G), yellow-green (Y), and purple (P). The cultivars were exposed to full sunlight and measurements were taken from November to March. The maximal quantum yield of PSII photochemistry for the dark-adapted state (F
v /Fm ) indicated Y's increased sensitivity to low temperatures at predawn, followed by G and P. Both quantum yield of PSII photochemistry for the dark and light- adapted state (ΔF/Fm ') depressions were correlated with increased PPFD, with regression slopes in the order of Y > G > P. On high-light and low-temperature days, Fv /Fm values deviated below regression lines, with differences ranked as Y > G > P. Polyvinyl alcohol-starch (PVA/ST) active films incorporated with lemongrass oil (LMO) or 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, and LMO (HP-β-CD/LMO) emulsion were developed in the present work. The effects of LMO or HP-β-CD/LMO emulsion on the properties of films, and their application in large yellow croaker preservation were investigated. The average particle size and the encapsulation efficiency of the HP-β-CD/LMO emulsion were 150.07 nm and 81.32%, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results revealed that HP-β-CD improved the compatibility between PVA and starch, and LMO was well embedded in HP-β-CD. The incorporation of LMO or HP-β-CD/LMO enhanced the water vapour barrier property and flexibility of the film while weakening its mechanical strength. The oxygen barrier property of the film was weakened by the incorporation of LMO and strengthened by HP-β-CD/LMO. The film incorporated with HP-β-CD/LMO exhibited a little weaker antioxidant and antibacterial activities than the film containing LMO owing to their release property. The existence of HP-β-CD postponed the release of LMO from the film into food simulant (10% ethanol). The preservation results demonstrated that the film containing LMO or HP-β-CD/LMO efficiently inhibited the growth of microorganisms and lipid oxidation of fish; and delayed the decomposition of protein and freshness reduction of large yellow croaker. Additionally, the film added with HP-β-CD/LMO exhibited the best protection for fish quality. - Abstract
While the family Schizaeaceae (Schizaeales) represents only about 0.4% of the extant fern species diversity, it differs from other ferns greatly in gross morphologies, niche preferences, and life histories. One of the most notable features in this family is its mycoheterotrophic life style in the gametophytic stage, which appears to be associated with extensive losses of plastid genes. However, the limited number of sequenced plastomes, and the lack of a well-resolved phylogenetic framework of Schizaeaceae, makes it difficult to gain any further insight. Here, with a comprehensive sampling of ~77% of the species diversity of this family, we first inferred a plastid phylogeny of Schizaeaceae using three DNA regions. To resolve the deep relationships within this family, we then reconstructed a plastome-based phylogeny focusing on a selection of representatives that covered all the major clades. From this phylogenomic backbone, we traced the evolutionary histories of plastid genes and examined whether gene losses were associated with the evolution of gametophytic mycoheterotrophy. Our results reveal that extant Schizaeaceae is comprised of four major clades-Microschizaea, Actinostachys, Schizaea, and Schizaea pusilla. The loss of all plastid NADH-like dehydrogenase (ndh) genes was confirmed to have occurred in the ancestor of extant Schizaeaceae, which coincides with the evolution of mycoheterotrophy in this family. For chlorophyll biosynthesis genes (chl), the losses were interpreted as convergent in Schizaeaceae, and found not only in Actinostachys, a clade producing achlorophyllous gametophytes, but also in S. pusilla with chlorophyllous gametophytes. In addition, we discovered a previously undescribed but phylogenetically distinct species hidden in the Schizaea dichotoma complex and provided a taxonomic treatment and morphological diagnostics for this new species-Schizaea medusa.
