Ergonomics Problems in Process Operations documents the proceedings of a symposium organized by the Institution of Chemical Engineers in association with the Ergonomics Society, held at the University of Aston in Birmingham, on 11-13 July 1984. The objectives of the symposium are: to enable engineers from process, power, and offshore industries to exchange information and experience with ergonomics specialists; to discuss ergonomics problems in process operations and methods of recognizing and controlling these problems; and to explore effective ways of applying ergonomics research to solving process operations problems. The symposium is intended to appeal to operations and maintenance managers, equipment designers and project engineers, designers and managers of pilot scale R & D plants, and ergonomists. The presentations in this volume are organized into three parts. Part 1 contains papers on the role of the human operator. ISCRE 10 Tenth International Symposium on Chemical Reaction Engineering documents the proceedings of the symposium which brought together experts from all over the world to discuss developments in CRE. Efforts were made to cover high added value substances and to encourage papers from industry. Some success was achieved, but there remain significant gaps between Chemists and Chemical Engineers when considering high added value products as well as between researchers and practitioners of CRE. The volume begins with plenary papers covering topics such as challenges in reactor modeling; bioreactor engineering; the design of reaction systems for specialty organic chemicals. This is followed by papers presented during the eight technical sessions. Technical session A focused on the modeling and control of chemical reactions. Technical session B was devoted to studies on biotechnology. Technical session C covered mixing while Technical session D dealt with special reactor systems and chemicals. The papers in Technical session E examined reactions for emission control and recycling. Technical session F covered the safety aspects of CRE. Technical session G focused on the experiments with multiphase reactions while Technical session H dealt with catalytic reactors.

Microbial Engineering is a collection of invited lectures presented at the First International Symposium on Advances in Microbial Engineering held in Marianske Lazne, Czechoslovakia, from August 28 to September 1, 1972. Contributors explore significant developments in the field of microbial engineering and cover topics ranging from the role of microbial films in fermentation and fundamentals of fermenter design to aeration and agitation in antibiotic fermentations; kinetics of hydrolase production by microorganisms; and kinetics of product synthesis in continuous alcoholic fermentation. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the role of microbial films in fermentation, with emphasis on the mechanism of microbial adhesion as well as the important characteristics of the surfaces and the microorganisms. The next chapter examines the effects of environmental (macro) conditions and those on the cell level in relation to heat and mass transfer in microbial systems. The discussion then turns to the self-regulating mechanisms in bacterial cells; methods used to disintegrate cells to release unstable substances; and the influence of environmental factors on the kinetics of biosynthetic processes. A method for controlling aeration and agitation in the course of antibiotic fermentation is also described. The final chapter presents the results of experiments that investigated the continuous production of ethyl alcohol using starchy materials converted to hexoses by externally formed enzymes. This text will be of interest to microbiologists and biochemists as well as researchers in pure and applied chemistry.
