11. Intensification of Biophenols Extraction Yield from Olive Pomace Using Innovative Green Technologies

Abstract

Olive pomace is the main by-product generated by the olive oil production process. Although toxic to the environment, olive pomace is an important source of natural antioxidants due to its high content of phenolic compounds. The aim of the current study is to maximize the extraction yields of the main phenolic compounds present in olive pomace using innovative green technologies. For this purpose, the present work is divided into two parts. The first part is based on a solubility study of targeted phenolic compounds in various ethanol/water ratios at two different temperatures (20 °C and 50 °C). A computational prediction using COSMO-RS software was applied for the calculation of eventual solubility, which was subsequently confirmed by practical experiments. The determination of the optimal extraction conditions of solvent ratio (EtOH/H2O) (60:40 v/v) and temperature (50 °C) led to the second part of the work, which concerns the intensification of extraction yields. Furthermore, various green extractions using innovative technologies, including accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), ultrasound with its both system (probe (UAE-P) and bath (UAE-B)), bead milling (BM) and microwave (MAE), were carried out and then compared to conventional maceration (CM). Results showed that ASE was the most effective method for extracting phenolic compounds from dried olive pomace powder (5.3 milligrams of tyrosol equivalent (TE) per gram of dried olive pomace powder (DOP)) compared to CM (3.8 mg TE/g DOP). © 2022 by the authors.

Abstract

Despite its severe toxicity and negative environmental impact, hexane remain the solvent of choice for the extraction of vegetable oils. This is in contrast with the constantly growing demand for sustainable and green extraction processes. In recent years a variety of alternatives to hexane have been reported, among them 2-methyloxolane (2-MeOx), which has emerged as a promising bio-based alternative. This study evaluates the possibility of replacing hexane, in the extraction of olive pomace (OP), with 2-MeOx, both dry and saturated with water (4.5%), the latter of which is called 2-MeOx 95.5%. The three solvents have been compared in terms of extraction yield and quality, as well as the lipid and polyphenol profiles of the extracts. The work concluded that both dry 2-MeOx and 2-MeOx 95.5% can replace hexane in OP extraction, resulting in higher yields and extracts richer in phenolic compounds. This study should open the road to further semi-industrial scale investigations toward more sustainable production processes. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Abstract

The volatile constituents of the essential oil of Zygophyllum album L., growing in Algeria, extracted by hydro distillation have been analysed. A total of 100 volatile compounds were identified and (E)-[beta]-damascenone (11.8%) was the major component of the oil. This is the first report on the chemical compounds of the essential oil of this species. Abstract

Summary Microwave 'Dry' Distillation or microwave accelerated distillation (MAD) is proposed as a method for 'green' extraction of edible essential oils extensively used in the fragrance, flavour, and pharmaceutical industries and also in aromatherapy. It is a combination of microwave heating and dry distillation, performed at atmospheric pressure without adding any solvent or water. Isolation and concentration of volatile compounds is performed by a single stage. Rosemary was extracted with MAD at atmospheric pressure and 100 [degrees]C for 30 min. The extracted compounds were removed from the aqueous extract by simple decantation, determined by gas chromatography-flame ionisation (GC-FID) and identified by gas chromatography--mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Hydrodistillation of rosemary was performed with 2 L of water for 3 h for comparison of the results with those provided by the proposed method: extraction time, yields, chemical composition and quality of the essential oil, efficiency and costs of the process. Extraction of essential oils from rosemary with MAD was better in terms of energy saving, extraction time (30 min versus 3 h), oxygenated fraction (59% versus 46%), exact product yield (0.6% versus 0.6%) and product quality. MAD is a green technology and appears as a good alternative for the extraction of edible essential oils from aromatic plants used in aromatherapy and the food industry. Abstract

International audience; Solvent Free Microwave Extraction (SFME) of oil from maritime pine wood waste and its antioxidant activity were investigated and compared to classical hydrodistillation (HD) method (Clevenger apparatus). A central composite design combined with response surface methodology was applied to evaluate the simultaneous influences of irradiation power, irradiation time and moisture content before SFME. A maximal extraction yield of 0.43% (g/100 g dry wood waste) was achieved under optimal extraction time of 43 min and an irradiation power of 668 W compared 0.28% obtained for the conventional method (HD). The results also showed that the three independent variables had a statistical significant effect on the considered response as well their quadratic effects. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that SFME extract is richer in oxygenated compounds (~58.5%) compared to HD extract (34.1%). The comparison of total phenolic compounds (TPC) showed that under optimized condition of SFME procedure, the amount of TPC was 74.6 mg GAE/g extract, largely higher than that obtained for HD extraction (51.2 mg GAE/g extract) suggesting that SFME represents an interesting alternative technology for production of recoverable oil from waste issued from maritime pine wood waste. Moreover, the antioxidant activity assessed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhdrazyl (DPPH) test showed that the concentration that inhibit 50 of DPPH radical was lower for SFME (15.4 µg/ml) compared to HD (123 µg/ml and to a synthetic antioxidant (BHT) (24µg/ml).

Abstract

In the present work, a common amino acid, l-arginine (0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 mol) was added to (Choline chloride + urea) to form ternary deep eutectic solvents. The thermal properties namely, melting point, glass transition temperature, thermal decomposition temperature, and molar heat capacity and the physical properties namely, density, viscosity (298.15–353.15) K and refractive index (298.15–333.15) K were measured. Addition of l-arginine increases the thermal stability, molar heat capacities and glass transition temperatures of the eutectic solvents, and on the other hand it reduces the thermal expansion coefficients. The physical properties namely, density, viscosity and refractive index were also found to increase with increasing molar ratio of l-arginine. The physical properties were correlated as a function of temperature to represent the present data.
