Turtles and tortoises (Order Testudines) are facing an extinction crisis, and ecosystems are at risk of collapsing with the loss of key roles they play. Hatching failure is a crucial barrier to population growth and persistence, but its causes are poorly understood, and it is unknown whether fertilization rates are declining as many populations become smaller and more female‐biased. Here, we show that very few studies of turtle and tortoise hatching success consider fertilization rates, and those that do use unreliable methods to determine egg fertility. We also show that studies of hatching success are biased towards marine turtles, as opposed to freshwater and terrestrial species, and wild rather than captive populations. To address the lack of reliable methods for assessing fertilization rates in turtles and tortoises, a microscopy‐based method (originally designed for bird eggs) for detecting perivitelline membrane (PVM) bound sperm and embryonic nuclei in the germinal disc of unhatched eggs has been developed and tested (in turtle and tortoise eggs). We demonstrate that this method provides unequivocal evidence of egg fertilization in five different turtle and tortoise species from both captive and wild populations, even after eggs have been left in wild nests for the full incubation period. This methodological approach represents a valuable tool for monitoring egg fertility and embryo survival rates in turtles and tortoises, with the potential to provide important insights into the underlying drivers of reproductive failure in threatened captive and wild populations. Despite suffering dramatic declines due to habitat loss and overexploitation, tortoises and freshwater turtles in Southeast Asia remain understudied. Sustainable forest management offers a promising approach for advancing the conservation of threatened turtle populations. This study examines the effect of reduced impact logging (RIL), a sustainable forestry method, on 2 freshwater turtle species. We examined detectability patterns and habitat relationships for the threatened Malayan flat‐shelled turtle (Notochelys platynota) and the non‐threatened Malayan soft‐shelled turtle (Dogania subplana) in 8 streams within a commercial forest reserve between March and July 2019, in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Using single‐species occupancy models, we identified covariates associated with the detection and occupancy probabilities of these species across a post‐harvest recovery gradient (1–21 years since logging). Covariates used in the models were obtained directly from the field or from open‐source remote sensing data. Results for soft‐shelled turtles were inconclusive. In contrast, we found a negative association between monthly rainfall and flat‐shelled turtle detectability. The occupancy probability of flat‐shelled turtles was positively associated with greater distance from logging roads and higher stream flow accumulation. Occupancy probability for flat‐shelled turtles and soft‐shelled turtles was relatively high throughout the reserve (0.79 ± 0.1 [SD] and 0.57 ± 0.22, respectively). These results, suggest that appropriately managed forests, could serve as invaluable conservation areas for imperiled freshwater turtle species in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is an endangered Old World species. The phylogeographic history of E. orbicularis has been extensively studied throughout its range. While local genetic variation holds valuable information for conservation efforts, specific regional details have yet to be thoroughly examined everywhere. The Valencian region on the Iberian Peninsula is one such area. Here, different evolutionary lineages of E. orbicularis meet, forming a part of the western Mediterranean hybrid zone. In this study, we comprehensively sampled all Valencian localities where E. orbicularis occurs. Using mitochondrial DNA and nuclear microsatellites, we determined the genetic structure of E. orbicularis populations. Our data reveals that the mitochondrial haplotype originating from the glacial refugium in the Apennine Peninsula is primarily restricted to the northern part of the Valencian region. Additionally, human-mediated dispersal processes may have contributed to the complex relationships between the evolutionary lineages of E. orbicularis in the natural hybrid zone. On a finer scale, E. orbicularis in the Valencian region can be classified into five distinct genetic populations. Morphometric analyses revealed sexual dimorphism in the plastron shape and slight variation among genetic populations. Notably, female, but not male, plastron shape correlates with individual heterozygosity. Given the ongoing threat posed by exotic turtles, we propose implementing targeted management strategies to mitigate the presence of alien turtles. These strategies should be directed towards localities that represent each genetic population within the region, reflecting the extensive population structure observed in our study. Freshwater turtles are one of the most threatened vertebrate groups. Climate change is a major threat to these species, with impacts affecting all life‐history stages. There is currently a limited understanding of how changes in climate may alter the environmental triggers for hatching and emergence from the nests of freshwater turtle hatchlings. This precludes making predictions about how climate change may impact freshwater turtle recruitment success. The southwestern snake‐necked turtle (Chelodina oblonga) is endemic to south‐western Australia, a global biodiversity hotspot that has undergone severe climatic drying. Recruitment failure is thought to be occurring in many populations of the species. However, there is little understanding as to how environmental change may be influencing recruitment. This study aimed to: (1) determine the incubation duration and hatching and hatchling emergence success of C. oblonga, (2) determine if the species exhibits hatching or emergence synchrony and/or delayed emergence and (3) quantify the effects of temperature and rainfall on hatchling emergence. Using this information, the study assesses how climatic drying and warming may be impacting C. oblonga's early life‐history. Between 2018 and 2020 nest sites were monitored around a large urban wetland with weekly assessments of egg and hatchling status. Incubation duration and hatching and hatchling emergence success were calculated, and generalized linear models were built to determine how temperature and/or rainfall predicted emergence. Hatchlings either emerged shortly after hatching or overwintered in the nest, and both hatching and emergence were asynchronous. Both emergence periods were positively associated with temperature and rainfall. This study reveals that incubation duration, hatching success, hatchling emergence and survival are all likely to be impacted by recent and projected climate change, and especially drying. Warming and drying are predicted for many temperate regions globally, and it is therefore important that their impacts on the early life history of freshwater turtles be better understood. Most of the extraordinary biodiversity richness of South-East Asian countries is concentrated in the national parks and other Protected Areas, with species-rich turtle communities surviving mostly in these reserves where their natural habitats are better preserved. However, very few studies have documented the turtle species richness of the various Protected Areas in Vietnam, which is not only one of the hotspots of chelonian diversity in the world but also one of the countries where their exploitation is the highest. Here, the diversity of turtles is studied in the Bach Ma National Park in central Vietnam, mainly characterised by forested hills and mountains, with ponds and streams of various shapes and structures. The study was carried out by conducting (i) semi-structured interviews of hunters recruited through a snow-ball procedure in local villages, (ii) inspection of turtle individuals in their hands, (iii) field surveys along random transects inspecting the various microhabitats used by these reptiles. We observed a total of 15 species, out of which 14 (93.3%) are threatened, based on IUCN Red List. A natural hybrid of Cuora bourreti × C. mouhotii obsti (Cuora «serrata») was observed. Three species (Cuora bourreti, Manouria impressa, Platysternon megacephalum) were the most frequently encountered species according to our interviewees. We conclude that, in order to enhance the conservation status of the turtle communities at the local level, it would be important (i) to increase the number of rangers patrolling the study area in the rainy season (from April to September) and (ii) to list the hunter's names in the villages surrounding the Bach Ma National Park and to convince them to sign an agreement with the local authorities to avoid hunting turtles within the Protected Area.

Plastic pollution has not raised much attention until the 2000s, despite being manufactured for about a century. It is now considered one of the most substantial environmental issues. Here we investigate the presence of plastic contamination in 34 stranded animals on the coast of French Guiana, South America. Here we present information highlighting the magnitude of plastic contamination in marine coastal and pelagic tropical marine vertebrates on the Equatorial Atlantic coast of South America. All four species studied here are protected and emblematic vertebrates of the region, with a fragile conservation status, including the olive ridley turtle Lepidochelys olivacea, the green turtle Chelonia mydas and the leatherback turtle Dermochelys coriacea, and a small cetacean, the Guiana dolphin Sotalia guianensis. Macroplastics (polypropylene, polyethylene, terephthalate, and polystyrene) were detected in four juvenile green turtles. Microplastics (polypropylene, polyethylene, terephthalate, polystyrene, nylon, acrylates, polycarbonates) were found in 13 individuals (two dolphins, six olive ridleys, four green turtles, and the leatherback turtle). The sampled species have different diets, distribution patterns, and ages, suggesting widespread plastic pollution. The study area is located far from the oceanic gyres. Introduction: Freshwater turtles in South‐East Queensland face a multitude of anthropogenic threats that threaten their survival. Research exploring the morbidity and mortality of animals presented to wildlife hospitals has been used globally to assess the health of species populations, investigate anthropogenic interference and provide valuable information to veterinary professionals about ailments common to a particular species. Materials and methods: Medical records of 1739 chelonian patients admitted to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, Currumbin, Queensland, Australia between March 2010 and March 2021 were analysed to obtain data on species, diagnoses, outcome and temporal trends. Results: Six species of freshwater turtles were observed, with the Brisbane River turtle (Emydura macquarii signata) being the most common. While there was no significant trend in the number of cases over the study period, there was a decline in the number of Saw‐shell turtles (Myuchelys latisternum) admitted each year. Admissions peaked in autumn and summer, likely coinciding with nesting and hatchling emergence. Trauma was the most common diagnosis, accounting for 83% of cases, and saw a decreasing incidence during the study period. In contrast, there was an increasing number of turtles presenting with disease within the same period. Overall, 67.4% of turtles were able to be released after a period of treatment, while 32.6% were euthanised or died due to their condition. Turtles presenting for trauma had the most favourable prognosis, and disease held the poorest prognosis. Testudines is a reptilian order characterized by low annual recruitment and delayed sexual maturity. One testudine species of conservation concern is the Rio Grande cooter (Pseudemys gorzugi), a taxon native to the southwestern United States and the westernmost species in this genus. A clear understanding of the reproductive biology of turtle species in the wild better informs conservation management options. The reproductive biology of P. gorzugi has been formerly investigated in the Black River of southeastern New Mexico. Because life history strategies of chelonian taxa may vary across geographic gradients, we examined the reproductive biology of this species at 3 sites in west Texas from 2017 to 2019. We detected follicle enlargement beginning in the fall with shelled eggs appearing as early as 7 April and as late as 12 August. We found a significant quadratic relationship between day of year and maximum follicle diameter (r2 = 0.22, F2,100 = 15.61; p < 0.05). A significant relationship between turtle size and clutch size was not detected nor was there a significant relationship between turtle size and egg width. We detected a record clutch size of 17 eggs and a mean ± SD clutch size of 11.4 ± 3.11. We observed a single instance of production of 2 clutches. The smallest gravid female we detected with shelled eggs had a plastron length of 179 mm. We also found that the probability of capturing a female gravid with shelled eggs was highest in early June. Our results suggest geographic variation occurs in the reproductive biology of P. gorzugi and highlight the importance of range-wide, temporally extensive sampling. Data presented herein can be included in population viability assessments and inform conservation recovery plans. Una especie testudina de interés para la conservación es la tortuga del Río Grande (Pseudemys gorzugi), un taxón nativo del suroeste de los Estados Unidos y la especie más occidental de este género. Una comprensión clara de la biología reproductiva de las especies de tortugas en la naturaleza brinda mejor información a las opciones de manejo y conservación. La biología reproductiva de P. gorzugi se ha investigado anteriormente en el Río Negro del sureste de Nuevo México. Debido a que las estrategias de historia de vida de los taxones de quelonios pueden variar según los gradientes geográficos, examinamos la biología reproductiva de esta especie en tres sitios en el oeste de Texas entre el 2017 y 2019. Detectamos el agrandamiento del folículo a partir del otoño con la aparición de huevos sin cáscara desde el 7 de abril y tan tarde como el 12 de agosto. Encontramos una relación cuadrática significativa entre el día del año y el diámetro máximo del folículo (r2 = 0.22, F2,100 = 15.61; p < 0.05). No se detectó una relación significativa entre el tamaño de la tortuga y el tamaño de la nidada ni hubo una relación significativa entre el tamaño de la tortuga y el ancho del huevo. Detectamos un tamaño récord de nidada de 17 huevos y un tamaño medio ± DE de nidada de 11.4 ± 3.11. Observamos un solo caso de producción de dos nidadas. La hembra grávida más pequeña que detectamos con huevos sin cáscara tenía una longitud de plastrón de 179 mm. También encontramos que la probabilidad de capturar una hembra grávida con huevos sin cáscara era más alta a principios de junio. Nuestros resultados sugieren que se produce una variación geográfica en la biología reproductiva de P. gorzugi y resaltan la importancia del muestreo extenso temporal en todo el rango. Knowledge of suitable methods and reagents for assessing the health condition of specimens of a given species is essential. The present study evaluated the efficacy of the heparin anticoagulants 5,000 I.U. mL-1, Na2EDTA, and K3EDTA on the blood parameters of yellowspotted amazon river turtle Podocnemis unifilis, employing different solutions for red blood cells count. The use of the various anticoagulants evaluated after 10 hours of storage efficiently inhibited coagulation in blood samples from P. unifilis. An increased number of erythrocytes was observed with the use of K3EDTA 5% when compared with heparin. Statistically significant changes in the erythrocyte number were observed with the use of the different solutions. Solutions which featured sodium citrate and formaldehyde in their composition, allowed erythrocytes counting up to 120 hours after blood collection, without a change in values. The use of the heparin anticoagulants 5,000 I.U. mL-1, Na2EDTA 3%, Na2EDTA 5%, K3EDTA 3% was recommended in the hematological analysis of P. unifilis. Also recommended was the use of the formaldehyde-citrate solution containing 1.9 g of sodium citrate and 1.0 mL of formaldehyde (in 50 mL of distilled water) to perform red blood cells counts in yellow-spotted amazon river turtle. Abstract Site fidelity refers to the restriction of dispersal distance of an animal and its tendency to return to a stationary site. To our knowledge, the homing ability of freshwater turtles and their fidelity is reportedly very low in Asia. We examined mark–recapture data spanning a 4‐year period in Diaoluoshan National Nature Reserve, Hainan Province, China, to investigate the site fidelity and homing behavior of big‐headed turtles Platysternon megacephalum. A total of 11 big‐headed turtles were captured, and all individuals were used in this mark–recapture study. The site fidelity results showed that the adult big‐headed turtles (n = 4) had a 71.43% recapture rate in the original site after their release at the same site, whereas the juveniles (n = 1) showed lower recapture rates (0%). Moreover, the homing behavior results showed that the adults (n = 5) had an 83.33% homing rate after displacement. Adult big‐headed turtles were able to return to their initial capture sites (home) from 150 to 2,400 m away and precisely to their home sites from either upstream or downstream of their capture sites or even from other streams. However, none of the juveniles (n = 4) returned home, despite only being displaced 25–150 m away. These results indicated that the adult big‐headed turtles showed high fidelity to their home site and strong homing ability. In contrast, the juvenile turtles may show an opposite trend but further research is needed.

Signals are fundamental to communication, and theory suggests signals may evolve to coordinate cooperation on complex tasks. Several recent studies have demonstrated that hatchling turtles vocalize within the subterranean nest cavity, and these vocalizations are hypothesized to promote hatching synchrony and coordinate emergence from subterranean nests (social facilitation hypothesis). Here we test assumptions and predictions of the social facilitation hypothesis in the snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina , a species with a broad distribution. First, we demonstrate that C. serpentina hatchlings have a vocal repertoire: we identified six types of vocalizations in a simulated nest environment, with one vocalization type occurring before egg pipping and all six types occurring in the 24 h following egg pipping and hatching. We found that Simpson's diversity was greater for vocalizations during the hatching stage compared to the emergence stage and was minimal during the prepipping stage. Second, we manipulated egg burial depth (shallow or deep) and sociality (presence or absence of siblings) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. We found that eggs in the social treatment hatched earlier and lost less mass while emerging from the nest, underlining a likely energetic benefit to hatchlings emerging with siblings versus emerging alone. Third, we tested a subhypothesis of the social facilitation hypothesis, which is that embryos cue hatching in response to hatchling vocalizations. However, vocalization playback to late-stage (prepipping) embryos did not alter pipping date relative to controls. Our combined results provide some support for the social facilitation hypothesis: there are likely energetic benefits to group emergence, embryos in a group hatch earlier, but earlier group hatching is not cued by vocalizations per se. Our study contributes to a growing literature on the adaptive significance of sociality in reptiles and helps disentangle the proximate drivers of vocalizations in hatchling turtles. • Snapping turtle hatchlings produce at least six vocalization types in the nest. • Relatively complex vocalizations were only present during hatching and emergence. • Eggs in the presence of clutchmates hatched earlier than eggs hatching alone. • Hatchlings emerging in a group lost less mass than hatchlings emerging alone. • Playback of pipping vocalizations did not cue hatching. The material historically referred to Chelytherium obscurum is exceptional for a number of reasons. It is the first described Triassic turtle, the oldest testudinate among the British palaeontological collections, and it is one of the oldest testudinates in the world. Nevertheless, after its establishment in 1863, the taxon remained in a taxonomic limbo and was eventually almost forgotten. However, the recent reconsideration of proterochersid turtles, with improved understanding of their anatomy, allows reassessment of Chelytherium obscurum as a member of the Proterochersidae, subjectively synonymous with Proterochersis robusta. Despite nomenclatural priority, in accordance with the suggestions of previous authors, the name Proterochersis robusta is endorsed to be upheld. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Elongated Tortoise, Indotestudo elongata (Family Testudinidae) is one of the five land tortoises having distribution in India. For the first time, we report a new distributional record for this species from Valmiki Tiger Reserve region of Bihar.

Reptile-associated human salmonellosis cases have increased recently in the United States. It is not uncommon to find healthy chelonians shedding Salmonella enterica. The rate and frequency of bacterial shedding are not fully understood, and most studies have focused on captive vs. free-living chelonians and often in relation to an outbreak. Their ecology and significance as sentinels are important to understanding Salmonella transmission. In 2012–2013, Salmonella prevalence was determined for free-living aquatic turtles in man-made ponds in Clarke and Oconee Counties, in northern Georgia (USA) and the correlation between species, basking ecology, demographics (age/sex), season, or landcover with prevalence was assessed. The genetic relatedness between turtle and archived, human isolates, as well as, other archived animal and water isolates reported from this study area was examined. Salmonella was isolated from 45 of 194 turtles (23.2%, range 14–100%) across six species. Prevalence was higher in juveniles (36%) than adults (20%), higher in females (33%) than males (18%), and higher in bottom-dwelling species (31%; common and loggerhead musk turtles, common snapping turtles) than basking species (15%; sliders, painted turtles). Salmonella prevalence decreased as forest cover, canopy cover, and distance from roads increased. Prevalence was also higher in low-density, residential areas that have 20–49% impervious surface. A total of 9 different serovars of two subspecies were isolated including 3 S. enterica subsp. arizonae and 44 S. enterica subsp. enterica (two turtles had two serotypes isolated from each). Among the S. enterica serovars, Montevideo (n = 13) and Rubislaw (n = 11) were predominant. Salmonella serovars Muenchen, Newport, Mississippi, Inverness, Brazil, and Paratyphi B. var L(+) tartrate positive (Java) were also isolated. Importantly, 85% of the turtle isolates matched pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of human isolates, including those reported from Georgia. Collectively, these results suggest that turtles accumulate Salmonella present in water bodies, and they may be effective sentinels of environmental contamination. Ultimately, the Salmonella prevalence rates in wild aquatic turtles, especially those strains shared with humans, highlight a significant public health concern.

In the present study, Fe, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Al concentrations in Caiman latirostris and Testudines blood from the Tapacurá reservoir, Pernambuco, Brazil, were investigated. Blood was acid digested with HNO3, and metals were determined by ICP-OES and FAAS. Lead showed concentrations below the established limit of detection. Eighty animals were evaluated, forty from each group. The levels of all elements were statistically significant when compared between the two studied taxa (p < 0.05). In caimans, significant differences between young and adults were observed for chromium (p = 0.0539) and aluminum (p = 0.0515). Testudines showed no statistically significant differences for the variable age structure. Gender did not influence metal concentrations detected in the present study for either group. Differences between species of testudines were significant for Fe between Mesoclemmys tuberculata vs Phrynops geoffroanus (p = 0.0932) and Kinosternon scorpioides vs Phrynops geoffroanus (p = 0.063). The inter-elementary correlations showed statistically significant differences between the elements Cr vs Al (R2 = 0.52), Cr vs Cd (0.43), Cd vs Cu (R2 = 0.41), Ni vs Cu (R2 = 0.31), Ni vs Cr (R2 = 0.30), Al vs Cd (R2 = 0.27), and Cd vs Fe (R2 = 0.26). It is concluded that blood is an excellent predictor of metals in crocodilians and testudines in the Tapacurá reservoir, with statistically significant differences when correlated to concentrations such as size and species studied. In addition, it evidenced data that prove the exposure of these animals to metals, with strong inter-elementary correlations and opening doors for future studies that seek to understand possible biological effects caused in the studied taxa. Human–animal interaction (HAI) can be valuable for captive animals, and many zoo-housed species benefit from interactions with their keepers. There is also an increasing body of evidence that some animal species possess personalities that are temporally consistent. However, the majority of zoo research, particularly on personality and HAI, traditionally has focused on mammals, and there are comparatively fewer studies on reptiles. Research was undertaken at the Faunistic Park Le Cornelle, Italy, to investigate the effects of approach tests and food interaction events on 5 male and 5 female Aldabra tortoise (Aldrabrachelys gigantea) behavior. During human–tortoise interactions, continuous focal sampling of behavior took place. The behavioral differences between individual tortoises, interaction type (approach or training) and person involved in the interaction (keeper, vet, or observer) were analysed using general linear mixed-effects models. The personality components of the tortoises were also quantified using principal component analysis. Overall, the study revealed that individuals acted significantly differently to one another, and that while females initially appeared to display a greater number of shy behaviors, this was not consistent across the group. PCA revealed two personality dimensions in the tortoises: boldness and avoidance. Overall, the study revealed that the tortoises possessed personalities that were independent of sex or scenario. The study also revealed that many tortoises chose to interact with their keepers during training and approach tests: this suggests that human–tortoise interactions may have some enrichment value. Future research could quantify tortoise personality in other scenarios such as in social interactions with other tortoises.

Aqui são apresentados antigos e novos sítios fossilíferos da Formação Romualdo, Albiano da Bacia do Araripe, no município de Exu, Pernambuco, Nordeste do Brasil, com o levantamento da sua diversidade fossilífera, com ênfase em paleovertebrados. Foram estudadas sete localidades da porção sudoeste da Bacia Sedimentar do Araripe, sendo identificados 16 táxons de paleovertebrados, incluindo peixes: Vinctifer comptoni, Rhacolepis buccalis, Calamopleurus cylindricus, Cladocyclus gardneri, Neoproscinetes penalvai, Paraelops cearenses, Tharrhias araripis, Notelops brama, Araripelepdotes temnurus, Brannerion sp. e Beurlenichthys ouricuriensis; pterossauros Anhangueridae e quelônios (Araripemys barretoi). A Paleofauna de vertebrados da Formação Romualdo vem sendo estudada desde 1800, é reconhecida internacionalmente como Fossillagerstätte. Porém, a região pernambucana da bacia carece de estudos sistemáticos, quando comparada com a região cearense, daí vem à necessidade de registrar as ocorrências de sítios e diversidade fossilífera, contribuindo com o conhecimento da paleontologia de vertebrados na porção sudoeste da Bacia do Araripe e ampliando os acervos paleontológicos do estado de Pernambuco.

A captive loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) of unknown sex, 3 years of age, presented with bilateral mucoid secretions, severe chemosis, conjunctival hyperemia, and globe retraction. The animal was evaluated ophthalmologically and systemically, and hematological, microbiological, and conjunctival cytological and biopsy samples were collected for complementary diagnosis. The histopathological examination showed amphophilic intranuclear inclusions associated with severe inflammatory infiltrate. The diagnosis of Chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 (ChAHV 5) was confirmed with end point PCR. Following systemic treatment with L‐lysine, acyclovir and vitamin A, the ocular signs resolved. No amphophilic intranuclear inclusions were seen in a follow‐up biopsy 5 months later, and there has been no recurrence of clinical ophthalmic signs during a 4‐year follow‐up. It is suggested that ChAHV 5 be considered as a differential diagnosis in captive marine turtles that present for conjunctival disease other than fibropapillomatosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, we describe several newly-collected specimens of Neopolystoma cf. orbiculare from the urinary bladder of 2 alligator snapping turtles, Macrochelys temminckii (Troost in Harland, 1835) (Cryptodira: Chelydridae Gray, 1831) from Comet Lake (30°35'46.94″N, 88°36'3.12″W), Pascagoula River, Mississippi. Our specimens differed from all previous descriptions of N. orbiculare and its junior subjective synonyms by the combination of having intestinal ceca adorned with triangular pockets and that terminate dorsal to the haptor, distinctive hooklets each having a handle and guard of approximately equal length and having a much longer and curved blade, 16 genital coronet spines that each possess 1-2 flanges per spine, pre-testicular vaginal pores, and vaginal ducts that are anterior to the junction of the oviduct and genito-intestinal canal. Some of our specimens were enantiomorphic (4 and 3 had a dextral and sinistral ovary, respectively). Nucleotide sequences (large subunit ribosomal DNA [28S], small subunit ribosomal DNA [18S], and cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial gene [COI]) for our specimens were most similar to GenBank sequences ascribed to N. orbiculare. Single-gene and concatenated phylogenetic analyses confirmed that NeopolystomaPrice, 1939 is polyphyletic and that our isolates share a recent common ancestor with those ascribed to N. orbiculare. This is the first record of a polystomatid from Mississippi, from the Pascagoula River, and from the alligator snapping turtle (and only the second species of Neopolystoma reported from any snapping turtle). Jaguars (Panthera onca) are opportunistic predators that prey on large profitable prey items, such as sea turtles at nesting beaches. Here, we use jaguar and sea turtle track‐count surveys, combined with satellite telemetry of one jaguar, to evaluate whether jaguar hunting behavior and movements are influenced by seasonal sea turtle nesting in the Sector Santa Rosa of Área de Conservación Guanacaste in northwest Costa Rica. We used generalized linear models to evaluate the effect of moon phase and sea surface temperature on olive ridley (Lepidochelis olivacea) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting abundance, as well as the combination of these predictors on the frequency of jaguar predation activity (proximity to nesting beaches) and movements. For home‐range size and location analyses, we calculated kernel density estimates for each season at three different temporal scales. Sea turtle nesting season influenced jaguar activity patterns, as well as sea turtle abundance was related to jaguar locations and predation events, but jaguar home‐range size (88.8 km2 overall) did not differ between nesting seasons or among temporal scales. Environmental conditions influenced sea turtle nesting and, as a consequence, also influenced jaguar movements and foraging activity. Our study defined the home range of a female jaguar in the tropical dry forest and its relationship to seasonally abundant turtles. Additional information related to the effect of tourism on jaguar–sea turtle interactions would improve conservation of these species at unique nesting beaches in the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The herpetological material of the 1905 Hamburg expedition to southwest Australia is redetermined and listed with precise locality data and habitat details. Of this material, 275 specimens of 57 species are still part of the herpetological collection of the Zoological Museum Hamburg (ZMH). A map showing 47 (out of 167) collecting points is provided. Some of the type specimens described in the original material by Prof. Franz Werner have been destroyed. A single paratype of Crinia michaelseni (Werner, 1914) now Geocrinia leai (Flecher, 1898), formerly thought to be lost, was recovered in the ZMH collection. This historical collection is a valuable resource for understanding the composition of the herpetofauna of the previous century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Morphometric characteristics of blood cells were examined in 44 (16 males, 28 females) Bolson tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) in Mapimí, Mexico. Blood samples were drawn from the subcarapacial vein, and smear stains were used to differentiate and measure the diameter and surface area of cells. Mature and polychromatophilic erythrocytes were identified, as well as five types of leukocytes (lymphocytes, heterophils, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes), and thrombocytes. The shape and color of G. flavomarginatus blood cells were similar to those reported for the G. agassizii, and G. polyphemus species. Blood cell sizes fitted related data from other reptile species. The information generated in this study can help monitor the health status of G. flavomarginatus individuals in the wild, thus advancing efforts to protect this endangered species. We present findings of our preliminary study to determine biometry and blood chemistry values of healthy wild individuals of the critically endangered Bolson tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) in Mexico. Given the absence of previously published data regarding hematology parameters for this species, these results represent an important base for additional research. Hematocrit determination, stains, and cell counts were performed, as well as 18 parameters of blood chemistry. Values of biometry and blood chemistry for G. flavomarginatus were similar to reference values those already reported for G. agassizii, G. polyphemus, and G. berlandieri. These similarities reflect the phylogenetic relationships among these species. However, slight differences may point to particular adaptations that each has developed to their own habitat, and so point to questions to be addressed with future research.

Animal body coloration is a complex trait resulting from the interplay of multiple mechanisms. While many studies address the functions of animal coloration, the mechanisms of colour production still remain unknown in most taxa. Here we compare reflectance spectra, cellular, ultra- and nano-structure of colour-producing elements, and pigment types in two freshwater turtles with contrasting courtship behaviour, Trachemys scripta and Pseudemys concinna. The two species differ in the distribution of pigment cell-types and in pigment diversity. We found xanthophores, melanocytes, abundant iridophores and dermal collagen fibres in stripes of both species. The yellow chin and forelimb stripes of both P. concinna and T. scripta contain xanthophores and iridophores, but the post-orbital regions of the two species differ in cell-type distribution. The yellow post-orbital region of P. concinna contains both xanthophores and iridophores, while T. scripta has only xanthophores in the yellow-red postorbital/zygomatic regions. Moreover, in both species, the xanthophores colouring the yellow-red skin contain carotenoids, pterins and riboflavin, but T. scripta has a higher diversity of pigments than P. concinna. Trachemys s. elegans is sexually dichromatic. Differences in the distribution of pigment cell types across body regions in the two species may be related to visual signalling but do not match predictions based on courtship position. Our results demonstrate that archelosaurs share some colour production mechanisms with amphibians and lepidosaurs (i.e. vertical layering/stacking of different pigment cell types and interplay of carotenoids and pterins), but also employ novel mechanisms (i.e. nano-organization of dermal collagen) shared with mammals.

Background: Algeria is situated at the crossroads between Europe and Africa. The northern part of the country is listed as an area of high biodiversity. Currently, the ecosystems (rivers, lakes, deserts, forests etc.) and the species are under more pressure than ever. The impact of humans is significant and many factors constitute a strong threat to this fauna, especially reptiles, which are the most vulnerable because of their low mobility. Thus, pollution, the drying up of wetlands and their conversion to agriculture have clearly affected the existence of many species. The herpetofauna of Algeria is one of the most diversified in the Mediterranean Basin, consisting of 104 species of which 16.98% are endemic. We suppose that the present list of reptilian fauna provided in this paper is not exhaustive and it is expected to include more species given the lack of research on reptiles in Algeria and its large area., New Information: Our dataset contains information on reptile occurrences in Algeria. Abstract The vertebrate track Laiyangpus liui , from the Lower Cretaceous of Shandong Province in China has been the subject of misunderstanding and misinterpretation since it was discovered and named in 1960, and reposited in the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology collections in Beijing. It was initially misinterpreted as evidence of a coelurosaurian (non-avian theropod) trackmaker supposedly showing evidence of tridactyl manus and tetradactyl pes. This discredited conclusion was influenced by erroneous 1930s interpretations in the European literature, of tracks later shown to be of turtle affinity. A half century later, when morphologically disparate avian and non-avian theropod tracks were reported from the type locality, it was suggested that the ichnites were most likely crocodilian swim tracks. However, at that date (2010), and for some time previously, the type specimen was believed lost, and in at least one instance the label Laiyangpus had been applied to quite different theropod track specimens in the collections. With the discovery of turtle swim tracks at several Lower Cretaceous sites in China, it was suspected, and later (2015) stated that the tracks were likely attributable to turtles. This, inference was confirmed when the holotype was rediscovered and examined in detail, revealing that Laiyangpus liui is sufficiently similar, morphologically, to Chelonipus to be considered a subjective senior synonym. We therefore propose transferring L. liui to Chelonipus liui, comb. nov. which is diagnostic of tracks attributable to turtles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chicken turtles (Deirochelys reticularia) are generally characterized as having atypical reproductive characteristics relative to other sympatric emydids. However, the comparatively understudied western chicken turtle (D. r. miaria) has been shown to exhibit some reproductive characteristics that differ from the other subspecies. Therefore, we examined clutch and egg sizes from six D. r. miaria (13 clutches) in Oklahoma and compared the results to values that have been reported for the other two subspecies. Females nested up to three times per year, with clutches ranging from 8-13 eggs per clutch (mean = 10.9). The eggs were 19.4-25.3 mm wide (mean = 22.2 mm). These values are greater than the means reported for the other subspecies, but the differences were not statistically significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work aimed to catalog the species of reptiles of the Sinos River Basin based on records from scientific collections and data collected in the field. We recorded 65 species, including 46 snakes, nine lizards, five turtles, four amphisbaenians and one caiman. Snakes composed most of the recorded specimens (91.3%), and the three most representative are venomous and of medical importance. The most urban region of the basin (Lowland) has the highest number of records. This fact may be a reflection of the high human population density in this region, which would have favored the encounter of specimens and their sending to scientific collections and research centers. It is worth highlighting that most species with few specimens in the collections are also rarely observed in the wild, such as Clelia hussani and Urostrophus vautieri. The ability to accurately determine the sex of individuals is important for research and conservation efforts. While most species of turtle exhibit secondary sexual dimorphisms that can be used to reliably infer sex, there are some species that are very difficult to sex, and even within many dimorphic species, it is not uncommon to encounter individuals that appear to exhibit both male and female secondary sex characteristics. Therefore, we tested the novel method of using a vibrator to sex turtles by stimulating male turtles to evert their penises. We tested this method on males of four species (three families) with known sexual dimorphisms: spiny softshell turtles (Apalone spinifera; n = 14), western chicken turtles (Deirochelys reticularia miaria; n = 17), Mississippi mud turtles (Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis; n = 10), and common musk turtles (Sternotherus odoratus; n = 9). The method accurately sexed 100% of A. spinifera, 64.7% of D. r. miaria, 80.0% of K. s. hippocrepis, and 55.6% of S. odoratus. Despite the low success rates in some species, there are situations in which this method will be useful for researchers working with species that are difficult to sex using external morphological characteristics. The green turtleChelonia mydasundertakes wide-ranging migrations between feeding and nesting sites, resulting in mixing and isolation of genetic stocks. We used mtDNA control region to characterize the genetic composition, population structure, and natal origins ofC. mydasin the West Atlantic Ocean, at one feeding ground (State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), and three Caribbean nesting grounds (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Suriname). The feeding ground presented considerable frequency of common haplotypes from the South Atlantic, whereas the nesting sites presented a major contribution of the most common haplotype from the Caribbean. MSA revealed multiple origins of individuals at the feeding ground, notably from Ascension Island, Guinea Bissau, and French Guiana. This study enables a better understanding of the dispersion patterns and highlights the importance of connecting both nesting and feeding areas. Effective conservation initiatives need to encompass these ecologically and geographically distinct sites as well as those corridors connecting them. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Blood samples from 172 captive and 40 wild, healthy, juvenile and adult, ploughshare tortoises ( Astrochelys yniphora) were analyzed to determine hematological and biochemical reference intervals. Hematological analytes included packed cell volume (PCV), white blood cell count (WBC), and WBC differential estimates. Biochemical analysis included total protein measured by photometry (TP) and by refractometry (TPr), albumin (ALB), creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), bile acids (BA), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), urea (UREA), and uric acid (UA). The jugular vein was identified as the preferred venipuncture site as subcarapacial vein venipuncture resulted in regular hemodilution. In due consideration of small sample sizes in some of the groups studied, adult tortoises had significantly higher plasma GLDH activity and TPr, TP, ALB, BA, and UREA concentrations and significantly lower AST activity and P concentration than juveniles. Captivity had a significant influence in some reference intervals, with captive adults presenting significantly higher WBC, and estimated counts of all white cell types as well as UREA and TPr than wild counterparts. Captive juveniles also showed significantly higher estimated monocyte and lower estimated eosinophil and basophil counts. Although these differences most likely reflect local environmental or dietary differences, without representing pathology or a deviation from the normal, they question the applicability of reference values from captive animals to wild animals and vice versa. Significant sex differences were only observed for PCV and UA. The reported reference intervals may serve as benchmarks for clinical assessment and conservation of this critically endangered species. Estimating the absolute number of individuals in populations and their fecundity is central to understanding the ecosystem role of species and their population dynamics as well as allowing informed conservation management for endangered species. Estimates of abundance and fecundity are often difficult to obtain for rare or cryptic species. Yet, in addition, here we show for a charismatic group, sea turtles, that are neither cryptic nor rare and whose nesting is easy to observe, that the traditional approach of direct observations of nesting has likely led to a gross overestimation of the number of individuals in populations and underestimation of their fecundity. We use high-resolution GPS satellite tags to track female green turtles throughout their nesting season in the Chagos Archipelago (Indian Ocean) and assess when and where they nested. For individual turtles, nest locations were often spread over several tens of kilometres of coastline. Assessed by satellite observations, a mean of 6.0 clutches (range 2-9, s.d. = 2.2) was laid by individuals, about twice as many as previously assumed, a finding also reported in other species and ocean basins. Taken together, these findings suggest that the actual number of nesting turtles may be almost 50% less than previously assumed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The barnacle, Chelonibia testudinaria, is an obligate commensal of sea turtles that may show population variability according to the physical characteristics of the environment and properties of turtle hosts; therefore, we characterized the distributional patterns and the potential effects on health of C. testudinaria on juvenile green turtles in Bahia Magdalena, Mexico. Barnacle attachment position, abundance, and size-class structure were described, while the relationship between barnacle abundance and turtle health condition and size was explored through generalized linear models. Juvenile green turtles of Bahía Magdalena offered an appropriate habitat for C. testudinaria as their frequency of occurrence was high and their abundance was similar to that found in other green turtle populations. Barnacles showed an aggregated distribution that may be facilitating their reproduction during the warm summer months. Barnacle abundance is unaffected by turtle size or seasonality, while their attachment position appears to be influenced by water flow over the turtle carapace and by plastron abrasion by the turtle against the sea floor. Healthier turtles exhibited a decreased barnacle load; therefore we suggest that C. testudinaria abundance may be a useful indicator of health for juvenile green turtles.El balano Chelonibia testudinaria es un comensal obligado de tortugas marinas que puede presentar variaciones poblacionales de acuerdo a características ambientales y de las tortugas que coloniza; por lo tanto, caracterizamos su distribución y el efecto sobre la salud de tortugas verdes (Chelonia mydas) juveniles en bahía Magdalena, México. Se describieron la posición de adherencia, la abundancia y la estructura de tallas de C. testudinaria, mientras que la relación entre su abundancia y la salud y el tamaño de las tortugas se exploró a través de modelos lineales generalizados. Las tortugas verdes ofrecieron un hábitat adecuado para C. testudinaria ya que su presencia fue frecuente y su abundancia fue similar a la de otras poblaciones. C. testudinaria mostró una distribución agregada que puede facilitar su reproducción durante el verano. La abundancia de C. testudinaria no estuvo afectada por el tamaño de la tortuga o la temporada del año, mientras que se sugiere que la posición de adherencia estuvo afectada por el flujo del agua sobre el caparazón y la fricción del plastrón contra el fondo del mar. Las tortugas más saludables mostraron una disminución en la abundancia de balanos, por lo tanto sugerimos que C. testudinaria puede ser un indicador de la salud de las tortugas verdes juveniles.

Tetrasporocystic, dizoic oocysts of reptiles have been separated by some authors into the genera Eimeria, Choleoeimeria and Acroeimeria (Protozoa: Eimeriidae), based on the site and mode of development of their endogenous stages. The majority of Eimeria species have been, and still are, however, described on oocyst morphology alone. Four different oocysts with this basic morphology were encountered in the faeces of Brazilian tortoises, Geochelone carbonaria Spix, 1824 and are assigned to the genus Eimeria, with the view that they can readily be transferred to the genus Choleoeimeria or Acroeimeria if this is indicated by a future examination of their endogenous development. A morphological comparison distinguishes the oocysts from those of Eimeria spp., previously described in chelonids of the family Testudinidae, and the names E. amazonensis, E. carbonaria, E. carajasensis and E. wellcomei n. spp. are proposed. Coccidial infection appears to be common in G. carbonaria, with three of seven animals examined passing oocysts. Oocysts of Isospora rodriguesae n. sp. (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) are described in the faeces of Geochelone denticulata Linnaeus, 1766. They are morphologically very different from those of Isospora testudae, Davronov, 1985 in Testudo horsfieldi. Eimeria motelo H°urková et al., 2000, previously described in Geochelone denticulata from Peru, is here recorded in the same chelonid from Amazonian Brazil.

Marine turtles produce hundreds of precocial offspring (“hatchlings”) that are virtually defenseless. Many are consumed by predators. Hatchlings improve their survival prospects by migrating to offshore “nursery” areas with lower predator densities and, as they grow, by developing morphological defenses. The flatback turtle (Natator depressus), however, remains in the predator-rich coastal waters of Australia. To gain insights into how they survive there, we compared patterns of early growth and morphological development in flatbacks to their closest relative, the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), which migrates offshore. We found that morphological structures likely to be used in defense are better developed in juvenile flatbacks than in juvenile green turtles. Those structures probably represent one of a suite of characters that enable young flatbacks to survive in coastal habitats where interactions with predators are likely to be more frequent. Embryonic development is strongly affected by incubation temperature in most animals, and the effects of incubation temperature continue after partition. However, relatively little is known about the effects of incubation temperature on the development of morphological features in reptiles. As a result, whether developmental rates of different traits change uniquely in response to incubation temperature remains unknown. In this study, we compared embryonic development of an Australian turtle incubated at different temperatures. We examined 43 internal and external morphological features of embryos at each week of development and compared presence and absence of each feature within and across weeks and temperature treatments, using a multivariate statistical approach. We identified morphological features that develop at different rates in turtle embryos incubated at different temperatures. Embryos incubated at 30°C hatched 3 weeks earlier, grew to hatchling size faster, and developed advanced morphological features earlier than those incubated at 26°C. Furthermore, embryonic features that appear late in development appeared progressively earlier in embryos incubated at 30°C. Embryos incubated at 26°C also retained some early embryonic features for longer periods of time during development, especially from weeks 2-4. Despite temperature effects, some traits appeared at the same week of development in embryos from both treatments, including a clearly distinguishable carapace and distinct gut villi at week 3. Variation in appearance and retention of features means that not all external features consistently appear in the same order, depending on incubation temperature. From a practical perspective, cool- and warm-incubated embryos may exhibit different sets of embryological features, which may not be captured by previously published embryological staging guides.
