Abstract

Very heavy nuclei owe their stability against spontaneous fission to quantum shell effects, which depend on the local density of single-particle states. The height but also the width and the structure of the barrier in multi-dimensional deformation space determine the fission half-lives. Other effects come into play, such as the conservation of quantum numbers and superfluidity or stiffness of the system in the fission process. This is why odd nuclei have longer fission partial half-lives with respect to their even neighbours and also why multi-quasi-particle states, such as high-K states, are thought to be more stable against fission than the ground state. We will report here on two different fission studies carried out with the GABRIELA detector array at the focal plane of the recoil separator SHELS. The first study concerns the fission properties of 253Rf, the most neutron deficient Rf isotope known to date. The second study focusses on a new measurement of the fission hindrance of the known 8- isomer in 254No.

Abstract

An experimental study of $^{256}$Rf spontaneous fission following the fusion reaction of $^{50}$Ti+$^{208}$Pb was performed using the velocity filter SHELS of the Flerov laboratory at JINR. The average number of neutrons of ν‾=4.30±0.17 and variance of σν2=3.2 from the prompt neutron multiplicity distribution were obtained. The alpha decay branching ratio of bα=0.003−0.003+0.005 and the half-life of T1/2=(6.7±0.2) ms of the isotope were determined. For the first time, our neutron detector system allowed us to extend investigation of the prompt neutron multiplicity study to the superheavy element region.

Abstract

International audience; Isomeric states in No256 were investigated using internal conversion electron and γ-ray spectroscopy with the GABRIELA detection system at the focal plane of the SHELS recoil separator, at the Flerov Laboratory for Nuclear Research (FLNR, JINR, Dubna). The nuclei of interest were produced using the highly asymmetric fusion-evaporation reaction U238(Ne22,4n)No256. The emission of internal conversion electrons and γ rays occurring between a No256 implantation and a subsequent α-decay event were studied, resulting in the observation of high-K isomerism in this nobelium isotope. The nature of the isomeric states is discussed in terms of possible two- and four-quasiparticle structures.

Abstract

International audience; This paper describes a digital electronics chain prototype for the GABRIELA detector assembly. The goal of the digital algorithm is to reduce the dead time of the electronics to tens of nanoseconds without loss of energy and time resolution. The structure and temporal diagrams of the algorithm are given in the text. The paper also shows the energy resolution of the algorithm in comparison with the existing analog system and the results of the first in beam run.

Abstract

It has been shown that neutron-rich nuclei with N > 168 can be synthesized in fusion reactions using heavy isotopes of uranium, plutonium and curium and a (super48)Ca ion beam. The synthesis of an isotope having 114 protons and 173 neutrons has been undertaken, via fusion of intense beams of (super48)Ca ions with (super242)Pu targets. The new isotope (super287)114 has a half life several times shorter than the heavier isotope (super289)114.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of low-lying excited states in Fm251, populated by the α decay of No255, has been investigated by means of combined γ and internal conversion electron spectroscopy. The values for the internal conversion coefficients for the 1/2+→5/2+ and 5/2+→9/2− transitions have been measured. The determined M2/E3 mixing ratio and lifetime for the 5/2+ decay to the ground state allowed to determine the corresponding reduced transitions strengths of B(E3)=18(6) W.u. and B(M2)=3.0(6)×10−3 W.u. These results, as well as the results of previous studies in N=151 isotopes, are compared to theoretical calculations beyond the mean-field approach, including the first QRPA calculations using the Gogny D1M parametrization for such heavy odd-N nuclei. The comparison points to the importance of accounting for the octupole vibrations for a proper understanding of the low-lying nuclear structure of some of the heaviest elements.

Abstract

New high-statistics data have been obtained on the decay properties of No-253 and its daughters using the reaction Pb-207(Ca-48, 2n)No-253. This was made possible thanks to an improved transmission of fusion evaporation residues through the VASSILISSA recoil separator and an increased efficiency of the GABRIELA detector setup. The decay schemes of No-253 and Fm-249 have been revisited. The known level scheme of Fm-249 has been confirmed, including a new level at 669 keV excitation energy. The observation of L X-rays in coincidence with the a decay of Fm-249 gives additional support to the ground-state configuration of 1/2(+)[631] instead of 5/2(+)[622] for Cf-245. In both Fm-249 and Cf-245, the interpretation of the data has been checked by comparing experimental a-particle and gamma-ray spectra with realistic simulations of the decay cascades and of the interaction of particles and photons in the detectors of GABRIELA. The population of a 0.7 ms isomeric state attributed to No-253 is confirmed by an a-tagged calorimetric measurement and the corresponding gamma and electron decay spectra are presented. Possible evidence for more than one isomer is given and a tentative partial decay scheme is discussed in the light of the available experimental data, systematics and theoretical expectations. Abstract

International audience; Heavy elements above Fm (Z = 100) are nuclei with vanishing liquid-drop fission barriers and are therefore entirely stabilized by quantum shell effects. Due to the large density of single-particle levels and strong polarized Coulomb fields, theoretical predictions of magic numbers are extremely model dependent. Furthermore, shell closures for one nucleon species depend strongly on the number of the other species. Reliable experimental data is needed in order to test and constrain theory. As there is a lack of such data in the region, new data is needed along with the confirmation of previous data. A detection system dedicated to the spectroscopy of transfermium nuclei was constructed in 2004 and installed at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA separator at the FLNR, Dubna, by a Franco-Russian collaboration. The results from the 2009 campaign will be presented.

Abstract

An isomeric state in $^{209}$Ra has been observed for the first time, using the GABRIELA setup at the focal plane of VASSILISSA, to decay to the ground state of $^{209}$Ra via a cascade of 238-keV (M2) and 644-keV transitions. The half-life of the isomer has been measured to be 117(5) $\mu$s and from systematics is assigned as a neutron i ^{-1}_{13/2} excitation.

Abstract

To investigate [sup 5]H resonance states with a better instrumental resolution, we utilized the two-neutron transfer reaction [sup 3]H(t,p)[sup 5]H accomplished with the use of a cryogenic liquid-tritium target and 57.5-MeV triton beam. As a result of this study, a valuable fraction of protons detected at θ[sub lab]=18[sup °]–32[sup °] in ptn coincidence events was attributed to the states of the [sup 5]H nucleus. Two resonance states situated at 1.8±0.1 and 2.7±0.1 MeV above the t+n+n decay threshold were obtained in the missing mass energy spectrum of the [sup 5]H nucleus. The peak located close to E[sub [sup 5]H]=1.8 MeV was clearly seen in the [sup 5]H spectrum obtained from the energy distributions of [sup 3]H nuclei emitted in the reaction [sup 2]H([sup 6]He, [sup 5]H)[sup 3]He at θ[sub lab]=17[sup °]–32[sup °]. The width (Γ[sub obs]≤0.5 MeV) obtained for the two [sup 5]H resonance states is surprisingly small. A state of [sup 4]H with E[sub res]=3.3 MeV and γ[sup 2]=2.3 MeV was obtained in the reaction [sup 2]H(t, p)[sup 4]H from the spectra of protons leaving the target at θ[sub lab]=18[sup °]–32[sup °] and detected in coincidence with neutrons emitted in the decay of [sup 4]H nuclei.© 2003 MAIK “Nauka / Interperiodica”. Abstract

Abstract: New high-statistics data have been obtained on the decay properties of 253No and its daughters using the reaction 207Pb(48Ca, 2n)253No. This was made possible thanks to an improved transmission of fusion–evaporation residues through the VASSILISSA recoil separator and an increased efficiency of the GABRIELA detector setup. The decay schemes of 253No and 249Fm have been revisited. The known level scheme of 249Fm has been confirmed, including a new level at 669 keV excitation energy. The observation of L X-rays in coincidence with the α decay of 249Fm gives additional support to the ground-state configuration of instead of for 245Cf. In both 249Fm and 245Cf, the interpretation of the data has been checked by comparing experimental α-particle and γ-ray spectra with realistic simulations of the decay cascades and of the interaction of particles and photons in the detectors of GABRIELA. The population of a 0.7 ms isomeric state attributed to 253No is confirmed by an α-tagged calorimetric measurement and the corresponding γ and electron decay spectra are presented. Possible evidence for more than one isomer is given and a tentative partial decay scheme is discussed in the light of the available experimental data, systematics and theoretical expectations. Abstract

Resonance states of 5H were investigated through the two-neutron transfer reaction t(t, p)5H. A triton beam at 57.5 MeV and a cryogenic liquid tritium target were used. The 5H missing mass spectrum in triple coincidence, proton+triton+neutron, shows a resonance at 1.8±0.1 MeV above the t+2n decay threshold. This energy is in good agreement with the result reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 092501. The resonance width, Γintr⩽0.5 MeV, is surprisingly small and difficult to reconcile with theory predictions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
