Disagreement exists on the taxonomic identity of the extant populations of the Australian Elseya referred to in 1992 as the gulf Elseya (= Elseya sp. aff. dentata [Nicholson]). The extant form has since 1997 been considered conspecific with the late Pleistocene fossil Elseya lavarackorum (White and Archer, 1994). Recently it has been considered a new species, Elseya oneirosJoseph-Ouni et al., 2020, conspecific with another fossil found in the same site and stratum as Elseya lavarackorum. Here we re-examine the fossil material and reassess the characters used by previous authors in an attempt to decide the issue. We find that the anterior bridge suture with the carapace of the fossil Elseya lavarackorum is associated with extensive and prominent plastral elements, which has led to misinterpretation of characters associated with this structure. We furthermore show that interindividual variation in sulci patterns is so great as to render them of little taxonomic value. On the basis of (a) deviation of the anterior shape of the carapace from ovoid such that, in aged individuals, the most anterior point of the carapace occurs at marginal scutes M2 (a resultant nuchal bay occurs in such individuals); (b) the typical absence of a cervical scute; (c) no evidence of a medial constriction in the anterior bridge strut suture; and (d) absence of evidence of any other informative variation of taxonomic value; we conclude that the decision to consider the late Pleistocene (ca 23 kyr old) fossil and the extant Elseya sp. aff. dentata [Nicholson] as Elseya lavarackorum (White and Archer, 1994) as conspecific should stand.

Maintenance of the life cycle of a wide diversity of helminths depends on the aquatic environment. Freshwater turtles are considered one of the main groups in these ecosystems due to their high density and biomass. However, there is little information on the infection parameters of helminths associated with the Chelidae species Hydromedusa tectifera, Phrynops hilarii, and Acanthochelys spixii that occur in the Pampa biome. Therefore, this study aimed at analyzing the gastrointestinal helminth assemblage of the three species. Analyses showed that A. spixii was associated with 11 helminth taxa while P. hilarii and H. tectifera were parasitized by eight taxa each. The gastrointestinal helminth assemblage of A. spixii and H. tectifera showed high similarity by the Morisita index. Infections suggest that the helminth fauna is directly related to the diet of the hosts, since A. spixii, P. hilarii, and H. tectifera are generalist and/or opportunistic with diets composed of various invertebrates, which, in turn, are part of the life cycles as intermediate hosts of most of the identified helminths. Thus, this study highlights not only the importance of helminthological research for the understanding of the biology of host organisms, but also the need for conservation of flooded areas characteristic of the Pampa biome, which is essential to maintain the diversity of the ecosystem.

La Tortuga Canaleta Chaqueña es una especie sumamente peculiar, característica de una de las regiones boscosas más extensas en nuestro país, considerada En Peligro a nivel internacional, En Peligro Crítico de Extinción en Paraguay, Casi Amenazada en Bolivia, y a nivel nacional se encuentra catalogada como Amenazada. Luego de más de 70 años de la descripción original de la especie en 1945 muchos aspectos acerca de la ecología de la misma permanecen desconocidos o bien poco conocidos. En ese sentido, el objetivo general de esta investigación fue ampliar y profundizar el conocimiento que se tiene acerca de la distribución y ecología poblacional de la especie Acanthochelys pallidipectoris para la República Argentina. En la presente tesis se actualizó la cantidad de registros existentes, los patrones de distribución y requerimiento de hábitat para la especie, en conjunto con una evaluación de la estructura poblacional de la misma mediante parámetros tales como abundancia relativa, clases de edad-tamaño y proporción de sexos, incluyendo un análisis del espectro trófico y la descripción del estado general de las poblaciones abarcando aspectos sanitarios y biológicos. A su vez, como resultado de los muestreos realizados en la presente tesis se ha podido corroborar la presencia de la Tortuga Casquito Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides en varias de las localidades muestreadas. Por tal motivo, muchos de los aspectos evaluados en la Tortuga Canaleta Chaqueña fueron replicados en esta especie e incorporados a modo de información complementaria. Se realizaron viajes de campo durante los meses de primavera-verano (septiembre a marzo) de los años 2016-2020 a distintas localidades dentro de la distribución natural de la especie en las provincias de Santa Fe (porción norte), Salta (porción oriental), Chaco (porciones centro y este) y Formosa (porción sur de este a oeste). Las tortugas se buscaron activamente durante el día (7am-19pm) habiéndose prospectado una gran cantidad de sitios de diferentes características, los cuales fueron ordenados en tres categorías: Cuerpos Definidos Abarcables, Cuerpos Definidos Inabarcables y Matriz Inundada. En función de éstos se realizaron abordajes de tipo Muestro o Censo en los ambientes, combinando dos técnicas de captura de ejemplares: red de arrastre (5mts de longitud) y palpado. En total se capturaron 100 individuos de A. pallidipectoris (86 capturas, 4 hallazgos ocasionales y 10 recapturas), 77 correspondientes a la provincia de Salta y 23 a la provincia de Santa Fe. En la región del Chaco Seco se hallaron tanto en aguadas peridomiciliarias como cuerpos naturales, mientras que en la región del Chaco Húmedo fue hallada siempre dentro de la matriz de bosque inundado. En general, en relación costo-beneficio acerca de las técnicas de captura empleadas, la experiencia obtenida en este trabajo indica que las pasadas de red de arrastre en cuerpos definidos abarcables resultan más convenientes que el método de palpado en una matriz de bosque inundado. Estas diferencias se deben a la complejidad en la configuración del ambiente de matriz inundada y a las limitaciones en las posibles técnicas de captura a emplear. Por ello, el esfuerzo de muestreo necesario resultó ser mayor en los ambientes del Chaco santafesino en comparación a los del Chaco salteño. Con respecto a la distribución de la especie, esta tesis incrementó el número de localidades conocidas sin ampliar su rango de distribución geográfica de A. pallidipectoris, contabilizándose un total de 47 localidades incorporadas para la especie. Las mismas significan el aumento de un 167,8% en el listado de localidades, lo que representa un incremento de casi 3 veces la cantidad de registros conocidos, sumando un total de 75 localidades para la especie. A partir de la inclusión de las nuevas localidades aquí reportadas, la distribución de A. pallidipectoris en nuestro país abarca cuatro de los complejos ecológicos de la Subregión del Chaco Semiárido y cinco complejos ecológicos de la Ecorregión Chaco Húmedo. La selección de sitios (charcas semipermanentes vs. matriz boscosa inundada) estaría siendo modulada por la presencia y abundancia de yacarés. Las poblaciones orientales de la especie se asocian a suelo encharcado en la matriz de bosque, viéndose su actividad totalmente influenciada por el régimen de precipitaciones. Las poblaciones occidentales de la especie se asocian a cuerpos de agua semipermanentes con una menor influencia de las precipitaciones. Las poblaciones de la especie muestreadas en ambas Ecorregiones siempre fueron halladas en ambientes rodeados por cierta matriz de bosque, aunque con un considerable porcentaje de fragmentación. Todas las poblaciones estudiadas presentaron, en general, predominio de individuos adultos de A. pallidipectoris. Las tallas y pesos de las distintas poblaciones estudiadas fueron similares entre sí y equiparables con lo reportado en la escasa bibliografía existente para la especie. Las categorías neonato, juvenil y subadulto tuvieron baja representatividad general lo que podría estar sugiriendo o tasas de reclutamiento bajas y/o supervivencia diferencial según la talla, siendo más probablemente esto último ya que suele ser frecuente en la mayoría de las especies de tortuga. Si bien se halló una tendencia no significativa a que las hembras sean en promedio más largas y pesadas que los machos, el Índice de Dimorfismo Sexual positivo y menor a uno indicaría la inexistencia de dimorfismo sexual en tamaño para la especie. En cuanto a la proporción de sexos, si bien se observó un ligero sesgo hacia las hembras, éste no difirió significativamente de la unidad. Los resultados hallados en este trabajo estarían indicando que, en concordancia a lo reportado por algunos autores en la bibliografía, el número y grado de desarrollo de los tubérculos de la cara posterior del muslo no debería considerarse como un carácter diferencial entre sexos ni tallas. Los datos de la presente tesis constituyen los primeros reportes acerca de los hábitos tróficos de la especie en poblaciones naturales. Se evidenció que la especie es inequívocamente carnívora y basa su dieta en una diversidad de invertebrados, incluyendo moluscos (gasterópodos) y particularmente artrópodos acuáticos (ostrácodos, cladóceros, larvas y adultos de coleópteros acuáticos, heterópteros, larvas de dípteros, náyades de anisóptera), aunque también incorpora ítems terrestres (ácaros, larvas y adultos de coleópteros, hemipteros), y en menor proporción vertebrados de pequeño tamaño (renacuajos y anuros adultos). Si bien las poblaciones de A. pallidipectoris de Salta y Santa Fe compartieron un gran set de invertebrados en su dieta, algunos de los índices analizados resaltaron escenarios levemente diferentes entre estas poblaciones, probablemente en relación a la Ecorregión de pertenencia de cada población. En relación a K. s. scorpioides, ésta presentó hábitos alimenticios omnívoros, y el consumo de plantas fue marcado en todas sus poblaciones. Si bien ambas especies compartieron ítems en su dieta, el solapamiento entre éstas fue bajo. En relación al estado sanitario se realizaron algunos aportes novedosos: primer reporte de infestación por sanguijuelas para A. pallidipectoris (1er registro para K. s. scorpioides y 2do para la especie) y primer reporte de la nueva asociación parásito-hospedador entre la especie de garrapata Amblyomma argentinae y A. pallidipectoris. En relación a esto, la observación de A. pallidipectoris asoleándose de forma aérea cambia ciertamente la suposición sobre el modo subacuático debido a la completa ausencia de reportes relativos al tema para la especie, pasando a considerarse aéreo, pero extremadamente infrecuente en función de lo analizado. Esta investigación representa una novedosa y relevante contribución al conocimiento de la especie Acanthochelys pallidipectoris mediante la generación de una línea de base sólida de utilidad para la planificación de futuros trabajos que permitan responder nuevas preguntas. El hallazgo de la Tortuga Casquito no sólo ha enriqueciendo sustancialmente el presente estudio, sino que las contribuciones realizadas constituyen también aportes novedosos al conocimiento de sus poblaciones más australes en la región chaqueña., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

En este estudio se recogieron registros de 135 taxones de helmintos parásitos (Nematoda, Trematoda, Cestoda, Monogenoidea y Acanthocephala) y ectosimbiontes (Temnocephalida) asociados a Testudines continentales de Sudamérica. Se identificaron 89 helmintos a nivel de especie, mientras que otros se identificaron hasta el nivel de género o familia. La mayor diversidad de helmintos asociados a los Testudines se registró en Brasil. Chelidae fue la familia con el mayor número de especies de helmintos. En cuanto al estado de conservación, 17 especies de Testudines con registros de helmintos están citadas en la Lista Roja de Especies Amenazadas de la IUCN. El conocimiento de la biodiversidad de los helmintos y de las relaciones entre estos organismos y los Testudines puede aportar datos importantes sobre la biología de los hospedadores. Por lo tanto, la información generada por los estudios de los helmintos puede contribuir a la investigación que tiene como objetivo la conservación de los organismos y sus hábitats.

Helminthological studies with Chelidae freshwater turtles in South America were conducted in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, where nematodes, digeneans and monogeneans were reported. In this context, the study aims to report new cases of gastrointestinal helminth parasites of Acanthochelys spixii, Hydromedusa tectifera, and Phrynops hilarii. A total of 65 hosts from the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were examined. Seven taxa belonging to Nematoda, Digenea, and Monogenoidea have new cases on hosts Chelidae in South America, as well as a Nematoda and two Digenea have new host cases for Brazil. Thus, the study expands the knowledge about the diversity of helminths and the geographic distribution of taxa associated with Chelidae turtles.

Urbanization is one of the most influential land use changes globally and continues to affect wetland ecosystems and their biota. Freshwater turtles, which rely on both terrestrial and aquatic habitats to complete their life cycles, are one of the most endangered vertebrate groups, with approximately 60% of species threatened. Although habitat alteration caused by urbanization is recognized as one of the main threats to freshwater turtles, there is a paucity of studies quantifying the effects of terrestrial habitat change on turtle populations. The aim of this study was to determine how terrestrial land use change, associated with urbanization, influences the viability of freshwater turtle populations. Thirty‐three wetlands were sampled for the southwestern snake‐necked turtle (Chelodina colliei Gray, 1856) (Chelidae) between October 2016 and February 2017 within a region of continuing urban intensification. Land use and habitat types were classified at the aquatic–terrestrial interface and within a 300‐m band around each wetland. Generalized linear mixed models were used to identify the land use variables that best explained the relative abundance of C. colliei. Turtle abundance and population structure varied widely among wetlands. The percentage of residential land use, and the presence and accessibility of fringing native vegetation, was positively associated with the relative abundance of C. colliei. The association with residential land use may be an artefact of historical land use, whereas the association with native vegetation is probably because adjacent vegetation provides connectivity with suitable nesting sites, and thus facilitates increased recruitment. This study shows how the modification of terrestrial habitat around wetlands may directly influence the population viability of freshwater turtles. Protection and restoration of native vegetation fringing urban wetlands is crucial to support the viability of remnant freshwater turtle populations

(1983:61) since it was the specimen Shaw (1802:62) used to redescribe the species; photographed in Cann (1998:53) and Cann & Sadlier (2017:18). Presumed holotype sampled genetically by Kehlmaier et al. (2019). Chelodina novaehollandiae Duméril & Bibron 1835:443 Syntypes (2): MNHN 6969 and 9405 (according to Roux-Esteve 1979:29). MNHN 6969 erroneously recorded as holotype by Cogger et al. (1983:61) and Georges & Thomson (2010:15). According to Bour (in Cann 1998:55) and Cann & Sadlier (2017:18), this is a substitute name for C. longicollis and therefore the holotype is BMNH 1947.3.5.86, and the MNHN specimens are not types.
